The purpose of this study was to manipulate bicycle seat height in order to perturbate muscle length, contraction velocity and excitation of soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles. One group of female riders (n = 13) rode a stationary ergometer at 200 W and a cadence of 80 rpm. Individuals rode at a self-selected seat height, a 10% lowered and 5% raised seat position. It was hypothesized that because the two muscles would operate at decreased contraction velocities at the low seat, the integrated EMG would be less for the lowest seat position. The soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles showed a significant decrease in integrated EMG value with decreased seat height (soleus F2,24 = 5.4, p < 0.01, gastrocnemius F2,24 = 51.6, p < 0.0001). The combined effect of the movement at the ankle and knee joints resulted in increased length of gastrocnemius rather than shortening at the lowered seat-height position as anticipated. This suggested that there was a greater role of knee-joint angle in determining the muscle excitation for medial gastrocnemius. The original hypothesis was accepted, confirming the importance of setting proper seat height.  相似文献

Chair-seat height affects the burden on the lower-limbs during sit-to-stand (STS) movement. Previous studies used the same height chair, attaching importance to practicability, but the difference in each subject's lower thigh length may relate to the burden on the lower-limbs. This study aimed to examine the influence of different lower thigh lengths on floor reaction force and lower-limb strength during an STS movement. Thirty young-adult male subjects participated in this study (age: 22.7+/-2.6 yr, height: 172.8+/-4.8 cm, body-mass: 66.3+/-5.2 kg). The subjects were divided into three groups (G1>42 cm, 42 cm > or =G2 > or =38 cm, 38 cm >G3) based on lower thigh length (G1: 44.1+/-2.5 cm, G2: 39.8+/-1.3 cm, G3: 34.3+/-2.1 cm). Namely, G1 was characterized by lower thigh length longer than 105% of 40 cm, G2 by 95-105% of lower thigh length and G3 by lower thigh length less than 95% of 40 cm, respectively. Subjects performed an STS movement twice from chairs at 40 cm-height and height adjusted by the lower thigh length of each subject. Vertical floor reaction force and electromyogram (EMG) on the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscles during an STS movement were measured to evaluate the force of knocking over and the burden on the lower-limbs. Fifteen parameters regarding floor reaction force (10) and EMG (5) were selected for analyses. Significant differences were found in floor reaction force at hip-syneresis (F1) and the impulse between hip-syneresis and appearance of the peak floor reaction force (F2). G1 was greater than G2 for the former, and G3 for the latter. Significant differences were found in active muscle mass of the tibialis anterior from the beginning of an STS movement to hip-syneresis (TE1) and peak active muscle level of the tibialis anterior (TE6). G1 was greater than G2 for the former, and G2 and G3 for the latter. It was suggested that when an STS movement is performed using a chair with the same height for each subject, the load imposed on the subject's leg at the time of an STS movement and the STS movement achievement strategy differed since chair seat height changes relatively by the difference in lower thigh length. Moreover, it is thought that the difference in these load conditions and movement strategies occurs when the chair seat height of a subject's lower thigh length is longer than 110%. When conducting the ability to achieve STS movement rating test, chair seat height considering each subject's lower thigh length may be needed.  相似文献

Manipulating seat configuration (i.e., seat tube angle, seat height and pelvic orientation) alters the bicycle-rider geometry, which influences lower extremity muscle kinematics and ultimately muscle force and power generation during pedaling. Previous studies have sought to identify the optimal configuration, but isolating the effects of specific variables on rider performance from the confounding effect of rider adaptation makes such studies challenging. Of particular interest is the influence of seat tube angle on rider performance, as seat tube angle varies across riding disciplines (e.g., road racers vs. triathletes). The goals of the current study were to use muscle-actuated forward dynamics simulations of pedaling to 1) identify the overall optimal seat configuration that produces maximum crank power and 2) systematically vary seat tube angle to assess how it influences maximum crank power. The simulations showed that a seat height of 0.76 m (or 102% greater than trochanter height), seat tube angle of 85.1 deg, and pelvic orientation of 20.5 deg placed the major power-producing muscles on more favorable regions of the intrinsic force-length-velocity relationships to generate a maximum average crank power of 981 W. However, seat tube angle had little influence on crank power, with maximal values varying at most by 1% across a wide range of seat tube angles (65 to 110 deg). The similar power values across the wide range of seat tube angles were the result of nearly identical joint kinematics, which occurred using a similar optimal seat height and pelvic orientation while systematically shifting the pedal angle with increasing seat tube angles.  相似文献

Altering footwear worn during performance of the barbell back squat has been shown to change motion patterns, but it is not completely understood how this affects biomechanical loading demands. The primary objective was to compare lower back and extremity net joint moments in 24 experienced weightlifters (12M, 12F) who performed 80% one-repetition maximum back squats under three different footwear conditions (barefoot, running shoes, weightlifting shoes). Results showed that there was a significant main effect of footwear condition on the knee extension moment (p = 0.001), where the running and weightlifting shoes produced significantly larger moments than the barefoot condition. There was also a main effect of footwear condition on knee external rotation moments (p = 0.002), where the weightlifting shoe produced significantly larger moments than both other conditions. At the hip, there was also a main effect of footwear condition on the extension moment (p = 0.004), where the barefoot condition produced significantly larger moments than either the running shoe or weightlifting shoe condition. Lastly, there was also a significant main effect of footwear condition on both hip external (p = 0.005) and internal (p = 0.003) rotation moments, where the barefoot condition produced greater internal rotation and less external rotation moments than either shod condition. This study indicates that altering footwear conditions while performing the barbell back squat may redistribute the internal biomechanical loading patterns amongst the lower extremity joints and perhaps alter the musculoskeletal adaptations elicited.  相似文献

Indonesians commonly perform activities on the floor that require squatting postures. It has been identified that adopting squatting postures without any proper support would gradually cause postural stress. This study examines the influence of different squatting heights to the body kinematics and subjective discomfort rating. The subjects were divided into two different body types: overweight subjects with BMI > 24.9 and normal weight subjects with BMI 18-24.9. The subjects adopted a squatting posture at no-stool condition and at the stool height of 10, 15, and 20 cm. The task was to simulate the work close to the ground level with the hip joint deeply flexed. Body segmental angular flexion (SAF) and the visual analog scale (VAS) method were selected for parameter analyses. Significant differences were found in both parameters SAF (trunk, hip, knee, and ankle) and VAS. The interaction effect was found by squatting height and the body type for SAF of the trunk (p < 0.05). However, the increasing BMI index was also found significantly affected associated with the anthropometrical characteristics for buttock height and lower limbs depth. It is suggested that normal weight subjects sit comfortably at 15 cm stool height, whereas overweight subjects preferred 20 cm stool height as a better acceptability condition in terms of overall parameter analyses.  相似文献

Nurses' empathy for and connection with patients demonstrates core professional values which are essential but, consequently, attract certain factors capable of inducing stress. Studies of the roles and responsibilities associated with nursing have implicated multiple and conflicting demands which might not be without some resultant effects. However, little research has been conducted on these work characteristics in developing economies to determine how these might impact the nurse employees' performance. There is need for evidence-based empirical findings to facilitate improvement in healthcare services. This study examined stress and level of burnout among Nigerian nurses (n = 2245) who were selected using stratified random sampling. The participants were measured using an 'abridged measures booklet' adopted from the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), Job Autonomy Questionnaire (JAQ), Questionnaire on Organisational Stress-Doetinchem (VOS-D) and Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS). The roles of work-home interference (WHI) and home-work interference (HWI), with respect to work characteristics and burnout (paying special attention to gender), were examined. Analyses using t-tests and linear regression showed no gender differences in burnout levels among Nigerian nurses, who experience medium to high levels of emotional exhaustion, medium levels of depersonalisation and high levels of personal accomplishment. WHI and HWI were found to mediate the relationship between work characteristics and burnout. The meditational relationship differs between genders. This study calls for further research into gender and burnout among the caring professions, especially in under-developed and developing economies of the world.  相似文献

The squat is an assessment of lower extremity alignment during movement, however there is little information regarding altered joint kinetics during poorly performed squats. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in joint kinetics and power from altered knee alignment during a squat. Thirty participants completed squats while displacing the knee medially, anteriorly, and with neutral alignment (control). Sagittal and frontal plane torques at the ankle, knee, and hip were altered in the descending and ascending phase of the squat in both the medial and anterior malaligned squat compared to the control squat. Ankle and trunk power increased and hip power decreased in the medial malaligned squat compared to the control squat. Ankle, knee, and trunk power increased and hip power decreased in the anterior malaligned squat compared to the control squat. Changes in joint torques and power during malaligned squats suggest that altered knee alignment increases ankle and trunk involvement to execute the movement. Increased anterior knee excursion during squatting may also lead to persistent altered loading of the ankle and knee. Sports medicine professionals using the squat for quadriceps strengthening must consider knee alignment to reduce ankle and trunk involvement during the movement.  相似文献

To quantify muscular fatigue we study by a mathematical modelization the changes of the levels of ATP and various metabolites, and of the oxygen uptake with the intensity of a requested muscular exercise. The proposed model is consistent with the main phenomena experimentally observed during exercises; it allows also one to extrapolate these experimental results to any condition and to simulate exercise-complete and/or incomplete recovery cycles. The lactate kinetics allows one particularly to justify the empirical optimization of rest rhythms during exercises of long duration. Equations are solved using a 4th order Runge-Kutta method; computations are performed on an IRIS 80 CH computer.  相似文献

This study was aimed to examine the influence of acclimatization on the change of concentration of stress hormones in men’s serum exposed to heat stress during physical training. The study included a total of 40 men, aged 19–21 years, divided randomly into four groups: CTRL group: control, exposed to the Exercise Tolerance Testing in comfortable conditions; O group: exposed to Exercise Tolerance Testing in a warm environment; P group: exposed to passive acclimation to heat for 10 days, followed by Exercise Tolerance Testing in a warm environment; A group: exposed to active acclimation to heat for 10 days, followed by Exercise Tolerance Testing in a warm environment. All participants were tested for thermoregulation and acclimatization, skin and tympanic temperature, heart rate (HR), hormonal status and sweating. The mean skin temperature was the lowest in the control group of subjects exposed to physical exertion under comfortable conditions, and at each point of measurement it was statistically significantly different from that of the other study groups (p?<?0.001). Sweating intensity was statistically significantly the lowest in the CTRL group (0.32?±?0.04 l/m2/h; p?<?0.001), compared to all other groups. Cortisol was significantly altered in O group (632.2?±?92.3; 467.2?±?89.7), testosterone levels were significantly altered in P (19.2?±?9.3; 16.4?±?7.3) and in A groups (22.1?±?12.4; 14.9?±?9.9), while prolactin was changed in O (392.1?±?51.3; 181.4?±?42.3), P (595.1?±?191.1; 191.2?±?52.5), and A group (407.4?±?189.3; 173.4?±?43.9) after the experimental period. The impact of acclimatization on hormonal indicators emphasizes its importance in the response of the endocrine system of soldiers to perform military activities in warm climates.

When stepping down from a curb, individuals typically make initial ground contact with either their rearfoot or forefoot. The purpose of this study was to compare vertical ground reaction forces, lower extremity mechanics, and intra-limb work distribution when individuals adopt a rearfoot technique vs. a forefoot technique, during simulated curb descent. Sixteen subjects stepped down from a platform with both a rearfoot and a forefoot technique. Vertical ground reaction forces and sagittal plane joint kinematics and kinetics were examined for the lead limb during the step-down task. Paired t-tests were used for comparison. Subjects demonstrated greater ankle joint power and negative work, and less hip joint power and negative work, with the forefoot technique vs. the rearfoot technique. Total lower extremity negative work was greater for the forefoot technique vs. the rearfoot technique. The percent contribution to the total negative work was greater for the ankle joint, and less for the hip and knee joints, with the forefoot technique vs. the rearfoot technique. The results of this study may provide insight into how curb descent technique can be modified to alter lower extremity loading.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a standard flexible shoe and a stability running shoe on lower limb muscle activity during walking. Twenty-eight young asymptomatic adults with flat-arched feet were recruited. While walking, electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded from tibialis posterior and peroneus longus via intramuscular electrodes; and from tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius via surface electrodes. Three experimental conditions were assessed: (i) barefoot, (ii) a standard flexible shoe, (iii) a stability running shoe. Results showed significant differences for the peak amplitude and the time of peak amplitude for tibialis anterior, peroneus longus and medial gastrocnemius when comparing the three experimental conditions (p < 0.05). Significant differences were detected primarily between the barefoot and shoe conditions and with relatively small effect sizes for peroneus longus, tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius. Few significant differences were found between the two shoe styles. We discuss how these changes are most likely associated with the shoe upper bracing the foot, the shape of the shoe outer-sole and weight of the shoes. Further research is needed to investigate differences between these shoe styles when participants walk for longer distances (i.e. over 1000 m) and following fatigue.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of varying the height of the foot stretcher on the mechanical effectiveness of rowing. Ten male university level rowers rowed maximally for 3 minutes 30 seconds on a modified Concept 2 rowing ergometer. Each participant completed one trial at three foot stretcher heights. Position 1 was the original Concept 2 stretcher position, with Position 2 being located 5 cm and Position 3 being 10 cm above the original position and in the same orientation. Pull force and velocity were measured, and mean power generated by the rowers was calculated for each stroke. It was shown that in all three stretcher positions, mean power per stroke decreased as a function of time during the trial, confirming the fatiguing effects of the task. Although mean power per stroke did not differ significantly between stretcher positions at the start of the trial, p = 0.082, a significant difference was observed between the original stretcher position and Positions 2 and 3 at the end of the trial, p < 0.05. The lowest decline in mean power occurred in the highest stretcher position. It is suggested that this improvement in effectiveness is due to a reduction in the active downward vertical forces applied to the foot stretchers which does not contribute to forward propulsion, and thus a reduction in energy waste during each stroke. It was hypothesized that further raising the stretchers will continue to lead to an improvement in effectiveness until the optimum stretcher height is reached, above which effectiveness will be reduced.  相似文献
