Blood oxygen affinity and red blood cell properties were measured in three subspecies of genus Bufo: Bufo spinulosus limensis, collected at sea level and at an average day temperature of 20 degrees C; Bufo spinulosus trifolium, from 3100 m, average day temperature of 15 degrees C; and Bufo spinulosus flavolineatus, from 4100 m, average day temperature of 10 degrees C. Electrophoresis of the hemoglobin showed the same component in each of the three subspecies. At 20 degrees C the blood oxygen affinities (P50) showed small differences between Bufo spinulosus limensis and Bufo spinulosus trifolium, whereas the value for Bufo spinulosus flavolineatus was markedly lower. At 10 degrees C, the ambient temperature of Bufo spinulosus flavolineatus, the P50 was extremely low compared with the other two subspecies at their corresponding ambient temperatures.  相似文献

In the present paper we tested the hypothesis that differences in the acoustic communication system of diploid and tetraploid green toads ( Bufo viridis complex) might be due to selection for reproductive character displacement. We recorded two acoustic signals of the toad repertoire − the advertisement call (a long range mate-attracting signal) and the release call (a short-range signal mediating male–male interactions) − from six sympatric Central Asian populations (three diploid and three tetraploid populations) as well as from three allopatric diploid populations from Italy, and compared their patterns of variation with the pattern of among-population genetic distances. Although release and advertisement calls share the same morpho-physiological constraints, they show significantly different patterns of variation. Release calls vary congruently with the pattern of genetic distances, suggesting that mutation and genetic drift have been the major forces responsible for their change both in time and space. By contrast, the pattern of advertisement-call variation is not consistent with the phylogeny of the group, because the advertisement calls of Asian diploid and tetraploid populations differ from each other more than their genetic distances would predict. These results strongly support the hypothesis that selection acted on the advertisement calls of either or both Asian taxa , possibly, to favour reproductive isolation.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77, 379–391.  相似文献

During their journey through the oviductal pars recta, the vitelline envelope (VE) of Bufo arenarum oocytes encounter structural alterations that make them sensitive to attack by sperm lysin and thus to penetration by sperm cells. The role of pars recta (PR) on the specificity of fertilization between amphibians was analyzed by conditioning Bufo arenarum oocytes with either homologous PR extract (PRE) or Leptodactylus chaquencis PRE. The oocytes were thereafter exposed to sperm lysin preparations from both species. Lysis of the VE only took place when the oocytes were exposed to the homologous PRE. The pattern of protein composition of PRE of these species was strikingly different as shown by Coomassie blue staining of SDS-PAGE. Moreover, antibodies against PR fluid (PRF) of Bufo arenarum produced seven bands of immunoprecipitation in electrophoresed homologous PRE and only one faint band in Leptodactylus chaquencis PRE. Here we show that: (i) the biological activity of PR from Bufo arenarum and Leptodactylus chaquencis over the VE of Bufo arenarum oocytes is species-specific; (ii) this specificity seems to be based in differences in protein structure, which was indicated by the fact that proteins from PRE of Leptodactylus chaquencis and Bufo arenarum were antigenically distinct; (iii) the specificity was solely related to PR activity and not to sperm lysin activity since sperm lysin preparations from both species showed comparable activity.  相似文献

Capsule Differences in vocalizations among populations are mostly explained on morphological bases, but historical factors may have played a significant role in differentiation processes.

Aims To investigate the relationships among vocal and morphological variation in two corvids: Chough and Alpine Chough.

Methods We used data from 11 populations of Chough and seven populations of Alpine Chough spanning the Palearctic distribution of the two species. Three data sets (morphometry, spectrotemporal parameters of trill calls and acoustic repertoire) were analysed and their variation compared with uni- and multivariate techniques.

Results In both species, morphological differences among populations were correlated to spectro-temporal variation of trills; in particular, frequencies of calls were negatively correlated to wing length (an indicator of body size). By considering only co-existing populations of the two species, the magnitude of morphological and spectrotemporal divergence was similar.

Conclusions In both species, birds from populations with similar morphology uttered similar call types and trills with close spectrotemporal features. In particular, larger-sized populations, as expressed by wing length, emitted lower pitched calls. However, the fact that dissimilarities in repertoire and morphology were correlated cannot be explained only by appealing to functional explanations, as the observed intraspecific morphological variability does not seem to be high enough to promote consistent changes in the pool of calls. In this case, historical factors might have contributed to the present pattern of differentiation.  相似文献

Tape-recorded advertisement calls of Gastrophryne carolinensis and G. olivacea, obtained in Texas and southern Louisiana, were analyzed by means of an analogue audiospectrograph. Samples were grouped into four areas: allopatric and sympatric for G. carolinensis, and combined adjacent allopatric/shallow sympatric, and sympatric for G. olivacea. Three attributes of the advertisement call (call duration, pulse rate, and dominant frequency) were investigated, with water temperature at the calling site as the independent variable. Values for dominant frequency do not overlap between species, across the full range of recording temperatures, and those of sympatric G. carolinensis are displaced away from those of both groups of G. olivacea (which are very similar)—thus indicating a pattern of geographic variation consistent with reproductive character displacement. There is considerable overlap in the values for duration and for pulse rate of each species when considered alone, but there is only slight overlap of the scatters of points for the pairs of values. For both species, no consistent patterns of correlation were detected between the three attributes of the call and the snout–vent length of the emitter, thus reducing the likelihood that the divergence in calls is due to pleiotropic effects of body size.  相似文献

Multi-unit response from the torus semicircularis were recorded to obtain neural audiograms for five different species, subspecies and races of the genus Bufo:Bufo b.bufo, Bufo b. spinosus, two races of Bufo viridis, and Bufo americanus.All of the audiograms were clearly bimodal, with a low frequency peak and a high frequency peak. A less pronounced but distinguishable intermediate peak seems to be an indication of trimodality. In the low-frequency range, the audiograms of the five groups differed little or not at all. There were pronounced differences, however, in the high-frequency range. This frequency band includes the frequencies of the conspecific mating calls. The best matching between call frequency and auditory best frequency was found in the Bufo viridis group.While it is likely that factors other than the signal characteristics in the vocal repertoire may shape the sensitivity of the auditory system, it is notable that those anuran species in which the mating call clearly facilitates reproduction have a more pronounced sensitivity peak at the frequencies in their mating calls.  相似文献

Calls are functionally diverse signals that mediate behavior in a wide variety of contexts in both passerines and non‐passerines. However, the call‐based acoustic communication systems of non‐passerines have received less attention from investigators than those of passerines. We examined the vocal repertoire of Smooth‐billed Anis (Crotophaga ani), cooperatively breeding cuckoos that live in groups with multiple breeding pairs. We recorded calls from 22 groups over two breeding seasons at the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge in Puerto Rico. We identified 11 call types and one group vocalization, and used an automated sound measurement program to quantify their acoustic features. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) correctly classified 74.2% of calls based on these features. The vocal repertoire of Smooth‐billed Anis is larger than that reported for the three other species in the subfamily Crotophaginae. Smooth‐billed Anis have at least two alarm calls, two nest‐specific calls, and one nest defense call. We also identified one possible signal of aggressive intent, one possible appeasement signal, and two calls that may communicate identity. The relatively large vocal repertoire of Smooth‐billed Anis and association of distinct call types with different functions and contexts supports the main prediction of the social complexity hypothesis, i.e., species with more complex social systems will have more complex communication systems.  相似文献

The vocal repertoires of nonhuman primates have long been thought to be invariable across populations and not to result from vocal learning. However, increasing evidence suggests that learning does influence vocal production in nonhuman primates, and that several species modify the structure of their calls in response to social or environmental influences. Vocal usage learning refers to the process whereby an individual learns in which circumstances to produce a certain call type, whereas vocal production learning refers to the process in which signals get modified as the result of individual experiences. Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) show socially mediated vocal plasticity as adults and during vocal development. This propensity to engage in simple forms of vocal production learning (accommodation) should produce population-level differences in call structure. To test this prediction, we compared the vocalizations of three captive populations of common marmosets. We analyzed the acoustic structure of 1337 phee calls, 461 trills, and 3611 food calls and compared them with a permutated discriminant function analysis. We found that all call types differed significantly between the three populations, and 76–98% of the calls were correctly classified. As physical differences in body mass and environmental differences between colonies could not explain the call differences, we conclude that vocal accommodation is the most likely explanation for the differences in call structure. This will allow us to further investigate the role and importance of vocal learning in a species increasingly used to study vocal learning and language evolution.  相似文献

Marmosets exchange two types of calls: phees and trills. We played back phees and trills to investigate the temporal rules of vocal exchanges using ten captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). The marmosets usually emitted the same type of vocalizations just after the stimulus playbacks, and similar regularities were observed in the temporal intervals of phees and in trills. They vocalized with shorter intervals when they responded with trills rather than phees, and, after the first call, they repeatedly vocalized trills with shorter intervals than phees. These results suggest that the temporal rules between phees and trills are qualitatively similar but quantitatively different. Soricids produce a considerable variety of vocalizations. However, these calls have been studied insufficiently with the exception of echolocation calls. In this study, 1,645 calls from 18 juvenile, ten sub-adult and 36 adult Asian house shrews (Suncus murinus) were acoustically and statistically analyzed to describe this species’ vocal repertoire and its ontogeny. The vocal repertoire of S. murinus includes 17 call types, seven tonal (whistle, chirp, twitter, whimper, squeak, scream and short scream) and ten non-tonal (churr, shriek, babble, click, boom, snort, screech, short screech, sniff and low click), of which ten call types (whimper, squeak, scream, short scream, churr, babble, snort, short screech, sniff and low click) were newly described by this study. This relatively extensive vocal repertoire, including one call type emitted during collective resting, indicates that this species possibly possesses a higher degree of sociality and cohesiveness than previously expected. High structural similarities were observed between calls produced by juveniles and sub-adults during caravanning and those produced by adult males during courtship. Therefore, the results of this study support a previously suggested hypothesis that in shrews, adult courtship calls are derived from calls emitted by the young. The results of this study also showed that the largest changes in the ontogeny of the vocal repertoire occurred at approximately 10 days old and was in close connection to the eyes opening. The results are discussed with available information on the vocal repertoires of other soricids.  相似文献

As ravens have pronounced learning capabilities, especially in the vocal domain, cultural transmission might be a relevant factor affecting the composition of their vocal repertoires. We investigated how important cultural transmission is in establishing a raven's vocal repertoire and whether there are different pathways of transmission. We studied individually known free-ranging breeding pairs whose vocalizations were recorded during interactions with a caged pair. The mean repertoire size of these vocalizations was 12 call types per individual (from 79 types recorded from 74 individuals), with no difference between the sexes. In 81% of individuals the repertoire was composed entirely of calls also used by other individuals. Analysis of the distribution of call types among individuals regarding sex, partnership and neighbourhood and aspects of the geographical distribution of calls showed that the main pathway of cultural transmission was within the sexes. In addition, transmission occurred between pair partners, as well as between neighbouring and more distant pairs. About 40% of the calls in a raven's repertoire were transmitted within a sex and 10% between pair partners. Any two given birds in the population shared on average 20% (0-77%) of their calls. Male calling effort and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were examined in a breeding chorus of toads from a hybrid zone between Bufo microscaphus and B. woodhousii in central Arizona. The chorus comprised 50 B. microscaphus and 17 hybrids, identified on the basis of morphology and advertisement calls; no pure B. woodhousii were observed. Males produced advertisement calls throughout the early evening, even when relatively large numbers of males (>50) were present at the chorus; active searching and satellite tactics were not observed. Calling efforts (call duration x call rate) of hybrids (23.9%, n = 8) and B. microscaphus (24.9%, n = 19) were similar and comparable to call efforts of B. woodhousii (21.9%, n = 10) from a different site. Moreover, repeatabilities of calling effort were significant (r = 0.45) for hybrid males, but not for B. microscaphus and B. woodhousii. Thus, calling behavior of hybrid males was neither significantly reduced nor more variable than that of their parental species. The distribution of mtDNA haplotypes revealed directional introgression is occurring between male B. microscaphus and female B. woodhousii: All 17 hybrids possessed B. woodhousii mtDNA. The proximate mechanism driving hybridization appears to involve common male (B. microscaphus) and rare female (B. woodhousii) matings as B. woodhousii expands its range.  相似文献

Females usually exhibit strong and unequivocal recognition of conspecific mating signals and reject those of other sympatric heterospecifics. However, most species are allopatric with one another, and the degree to which females recognize mating signals of allopatric species is more varied. Such mating signals are often rejected but are sometimes falsely recognized as conspecific. We studied the dynamics of mate recognition in female túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus) in response to a series of calls that were intermediate between the conspecific and each of five allopatric-heterospecific calls: two that elicited recognition from females in previous studies and three that did not. This study shows that females perceive variation in allopatric mating signals in acontinuous manner with no evidence of perceptual category formation. The strength of recognition is predicted by how different the target stimulus is from the conspecific call within a series of calls. But the differences in recognition responses among call series are not predicted by the similarity of the call series to the conspecific call. The latter result suggests that the strength of recognition of allopatric signals might be influenced by processes of stimulus generalization and past evolutionary history.  相似文献

Cooperatively breeding Arabian babblers (Turdoides squamiceps) havea repertoire of different calls that they use in predator-induced contexts.We investigated their vocal mobbing behavior in two different predator-inducedsituations. We presented territorial groups of babblers a perched,stuffed owl representing an avian predator and a cat representinga ground predator. Babblers approached in both situations andmobbed the predators with the same two call types. In both predator-inducedsituations their first call was a short, metallic-sounding "tzwick."In response to the cat, babblers continued to primarily usetzwicks. However, in continued response to the owl, the babblersprimarily used long trills. The experiments indicate that differencesin use of two common call types during mobbing provide informationon differences in predator-induced situations, although no calltype per se identified a specific situation. The experiments suggestthat the short tzwicks indicate a higher risk or urgency thantrills and that combinations of both call types may providegraded information about differences in predator-induced situations.The relatively stable groups of these cooperative breeders mighthave favored evolution for using different calls in differentmobbing situations.  相似文献

In habitats in which multiple species are prey to the same predators, individuals can greatly benefit from recognizing information regarding predators that is provided by other species. Past studies have demonstrated that various mammals respond to familiar heterospecific alarm calls, but whether acoustic similarity to a familiar call can prompt a mammal's recognition of an unfamiliar call has yet to be shown. We presented alarm calls to free‐ranging eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) and recorded behavioral changes in vigilance and antipredatory response. Playbacks included alarm calls of a sympatric bird (American robin, Turdus migratorius), an allopatric bird with a call structure similar to that of the robin (common blackbird, Turdus merula), and an allopatric bird with a distinct call structure (New Holland honeyeater, Phylidonyris novaehollandiae). Squirrels responded significantly more frequently to squirrel alarm calls (positive control) than to robin song (negative control) or honeyeater calls. Squirrel response to robin and blackbird alarm calls was statistically similar to their response to squirrel alarm calls, indicating that squirrels responded to those alarm calls as if they provided information about the presence of predators. However, squirrel response to robin song was not statistically different from response to any of the other avian calls, including the robin and blackbird alarms, suggesting that squirrels neither respond to blackbird alarms as if they clearly signify danger, nor as if they clearly do not signify danger, perhaps reflecting some ambiguity in interpretation of the calls. These results suggest that squirrel responses to alarm calls are generally based on call familiarity, but that acoustic similarity of an unfamiliar allopatric call to a familiar call also can elicit antipredator behavior. The lack of response to honeyeater alarm calls also supports the hypothesis that call recognition by gray squirrels is dependent on familiarity, rather than simply detection of an acoustic feature common to alarm calls across a variety of avian species.  相似文献

Interfering sounds from biotic and abiotic origins are likely to shape the responsiveness of sound communicating animals. Among these sources of interference, interactions among acoustically active species have been studied to quite a limited extent. The vocal responses of 20 male frogs Batrachyla leptopus from the temperate austral forest in Chile were tested with conspecific calls and with the calls of two sympatric species: Batrachyla taeniata and Batrachyla antartandica, broadcast at amplitudes of 73, 79, 85, 91 and 97 dB SPL peak. Also, the vocal activity of the subjects during exposure to a 3‐min continuous broadband noise presented at 67 dB SPL RMS was monitored. The subjects gave higher responses on average to the conspecific relative to the heterospecific calls, but in most comparisons, these differences did not reach levels of significance. In addition, the vocal activity of males of B. leptopus did not increase in the presence of the continuous broadband noise. The lack of clear preferential responses for conspecific signals contrasts with the sharp selectivities that B. taeniata and B. antartandica have shown for their own calls in previous studies. Such different vocal behavior could be related to the extensive geographic overlap of B. leptopus with the two other species in the temperate austral forest, where mixed choruses of this species with each of the two congeneric taxa have been reported to occur occasionally. The lack of vocal activation in the presence of continuous noise also contrasts with the increased vocal output with which the other two taxa respond to this intrusion and is likely to result from a relatively high spontaneous vocal activity in B. leptopus.  相似文献

The budgerigar, a small species of parrot, can learn new vocalizations throughout life and is therefore widely used as a model system for studying various aspects of vocal learning. It is not known, however, why parrots imitate sounds. To test the hypothesis that vocal imitation in budgerigars is related to pair bonding, we recorded approximately 100 contact calls from each of nine male and nine female adult budgerigars that were unfamiliar with one another and then placed them into pairs. We sampled their contact call repertoire weekly and conducted twice-weekly behavioural observation sessions. We compared contact calls by sonagram cross-correlation and classified them by means of a hierarchical clustering algorithm. This analysis showed that all pairs developed a shared call within an average of 2.1 weeks. Further analysis revealed that eight of the nine male budgerigars imitated the contact calls of their assigned mates, while none of the females imitated the calls of their males. We conclude that contact call imitation in adult budgerigars probably contributes to pair bond formation and maintenance. Prior studies on budgerigars were limited by the lack of a behavioural paradigm to elicit vocal imitation reliably. Vocal communication in wild long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) is described in terms of (1) a preliminary vocal repertoire and the situations in which calls occur in the natural habitat of this species and (2) quantitative measurement of the natural occurrence of calls in the field. Although a number of calls are relatively discrete (e.g., a male loud call), gradation is pronounced for both wide-spectrum (“harsh”) and narrow-spectrum (“clear”) vocal signals. Thirteen general types of harsh calls are identified provisionally as elements of the vocal repertoire. The exact number of discrete clear calls contributing to the vocal repertoire could not be ascertained precisely, but these calls were classified operationally into six broadly acoustically different classes in order to measure natural vocal behavior. Vocalizations tended to occur in temporal “clusters” during sample, periods. Narrow-band clear or “coo” calls were more frequently performed by macaques than wide-band harsh calls. The possible functional implications of the correlated occurrence of multiple vocal signals are discussed.  相似文献
