The goal of this study was to describe and quantify the physical and chemical limnological properties of 46 lakes and ponds on Banks Island, to explore the effects of ecoclimatic differences on the water chemistry of these study sites, and to establish baseline conditions for this previously unexplored limnological region, which could then be used in subsequent long-term environmental monitoring programs. A key finding was that the study sites on Banks Island represented a large nutrient concentration gradient from ultra-oligotrophic to hypereutrophic waters. In general, the study sites were relatively nutrient rich by Arctic standards (i.e. mean total nitrogen (TNmean)=504.2μg/l and mean total phosphorus (TPUmean)=18.0μg/l); concentrations that are amongst the highest of any previous limnological survey from similar latitudes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were also some of the highest reported to date amongst all other Canadian Arctic island limnological surveys. These values reflect the milder climate, concentrated animal life and lushness of Banks Island, as compared to other Canadian Arctic Archipelago islands. Principal components analysis (PCA) separated sites along a conductivity/ionic and elevation gradient on Axis 1 (λ1=0.343), and a metal (Fe, Zn, Al) and alkalinity-related (DIC, pH) gradient on the second axis (λ2=0.187). Canonical variate analysis (CVA) was used to explore the classification of the study sites into Low Arctic, Mid Arctic or High Arctic designations based on their limnological characteristics.  相似文献

The limnological characteristics of 38 lakes and ponds on Axel Heiberg Island were determined, in part, to establish baseline data for future monitoring programs, and to provide the foundation for future paleoenvironmental work in this climatically‐sensitive region. In general, these sites were slightly alkaline, oligotrophic to ultra‐oligotrophic (mean total unfiltered phosphorus = 4.1 μg/L), and phosphorus‐limited. Principal components analyses separated lakes along a primary gradient of ionic concentration, and along a secondary gradient of POC, DOC and nutrient concentrations. Some interesting aspects of this limnological survey included very acidic sites (pH < 4), and the minimal effects of large altitudinal and latitudinal gradients on the limnological characteristics of our sites.  相似文献

Thirty-four lakes and ponds on north-central Victoria Island (Arctic Canada) were examined in order to characterize the limnological conditions of these unstudied aquatic ecosystems, and to provide baseline data as part of a larger study monitoring future changes in climatically-sensitive high-latitude locations. Similar to several other arctic regions, the lakes and ponds were slightly alkaline (mean pH = 7.65), dilute (mean specific conductance = 96.4 S), and low in nutrients. What distinguished this limnological data set was the ultra-oligotrophic nature of the lakes and ponds, as mean phosphorus (1.3 g l–1) and chlorophyll a (0.4 g l–1) concentrations were amongst the lowest recorded in arctic environments. Also, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (often <1 mg l–1) were 2–3 times lower than those recorded for ponds at similar latitudes. Principal components analysis (PCA) separated sites primarily along a gradient of DOC and specific conductance, and along a secondary gradient of particulate nitrogen, likely reflecting differences in phyto- and zooplankton biomass. These ultra-oligotrophic lakes and ponds should show a marked response to global warming. As DOC acts as a natural UV radiation screen, the combination of ultra-oligotrophic conditions and low DOC levels suggests that the biota within these sites are representative of those adapted to living in highly stressful environments. Lakes and ponds in this region make ideal monitoring sites, as they should be especially responsive to future environmental changes.  相似文献

Elevation, standing crop, disturbance and soil fertility often emerge from studies of freshwater plant communities as the dominant environmental factors determining both species richness and species composition. Few studies in North America have investigated the relationship between these factors and species abundance (standing crop) and species composition in the context of invasion by Phragmites australis. This study explores the influence of key abiotic and biotic variables on species abundance and composition across three Lake Erie wetlands differing in hydrology and Phragmites abundance in East Harbor, Ohio, USA. Standing crop for 92 species was related to standard sediment analyses, wave exposure, distance to shoreline, elevation, light interference, species density, and Phragmites standing crop in each of 95 1 × 1 m quadrats by using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Elevation (Axis I) and Phragmites standing␣crop-soil fertility (Axis II) explained 35.7 and 26.2%, respectively, of the variation in the species–environment relationships. Wave exposure was not a primary component of the first four canonical axes. Axis I was instrumental in describing species composition, separating wet meadow species from marsh species. Axis II was inversely related to species density for both wet meadow and marsh species. These findings generally support prevailing models describing the distribution of wetland plants along environmental gradients. Two discrepancies were noted, however: (1) species density was highest in the most sheltered sites and (2) wave exposure was directly associated with Phragmites standing crop-soil fertility gradient. The structural integrity of Phragmites stems, topographic heterogeneity and differential responses to anthropogenic disturbance may contribute to departure from prevailing multivariate models. This information has direct implications for local and regional wetland managers.  相似文献

We have developed a procedure to process echosounding data to map the distribution of submerged aquatic macrophytes in the southern basin of Lake Biwa, a water body that has a surface area of 52 km2 and a mean depth of 4 m. Echosounding observations were made along 27 transect lines spaced at 500-m intervals on August 4 and September 2 and 30, 2003. Quantitative vegetation data including percent coverage, mean vegetation height, and percent vegetation infestation were directly determined using image data from the echosounder recorded digitally on videotape. Based on the image data from an echosounder, a regression model was developed for estimating biomass of submerged macrophytes. The regression model using the total echo strength as the explanatory variable could reliably estimate macrophyte biomass up to 300 g m−2. Distribution maps of macrophyte height and biomass suggest that the recent summer decline of submerged macrophytes started earlier in shallow areas (<3 m of depth) than deep areas (>4 m) in the southern basin of Lake Biwa.  相似文献

Long-term observations of deepwater renewal in Crater Lake,Oregon   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
We examine observations of key limnological properties (primarily temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen), measured over a 14-year period in Crater Lake, Oregon, and discuss variability in the hypolimnion on time scales of days to a decade. During some years (e.g., 1994–1995), higher-than-average wintertime deep convection and ventilation led to the removal of significant amounts of heat and salt from the hypolimnion, while dissolved oxygen concentrations increase. In other years, such as the winter of 1996–1997, heat and salt concentrations increase throughout the year and dissolved oxygen levels drop, indicating conditions were dominated by the background geothermal inputs and dissolved oxygen consumption by bacteria (i.e., minimal deep convection). Over the entire 14 year period, no statistically significant trend was observed in the annual hypolimnetic heat and salt content. Measurements from several thermistors moored in the hypolimnion provide new insight into the time and space scales of the deep convection events. For some events, cool water intrusions are observed sequentially, from shallower depths to deeper depths, suggesting vertical mixing or advection from above. For other events, the cooling is observed first at the deepest sensors, suggesting a thin, cold water pulse that flows along the bottom and mixes more slowly upwards into the basin. In both cases, the source waters must originate from the epilimnion. Conditions during a strong ventilation year (1994–1995) and a weak ventilation year (1996–1997) were compared. The results suggest the major difference between these 2 years was the evolution of the stratification in the epilimnion during the first few weeks of reverse stratification such that thermobaric instabilities were easier to form during 1995 than␣1997. Thus, the details of surface cooling and wind-driven mixing during the early stages of␣reverse stratification may determine the net␣amount of ventilation possible during a particular year.  相似文献

Metazoan meiofauna was sampled along a temperate latitude transect (41-47°S 178°30′E) across the Chatham Rise, south-west Pacific, from water depths of 350-2600 m on three occasions (austral autumn 1997, spring 1997, summer 2000). Samples were collected using a multicorer and extracted on a 63-μm mesh. Meiofaunal density and biomass were negatively correlated with water depth, median grain-size and sediment calcium carbonate content, and positively correlated with sediment chlorophyll a. There were no significant relationships between meiofaunal abundance and biomass and measures of sediment organic matter and bacterial productivity and biomass, except in summer when bacterial and meiofaunal biomass were positively correlated. Vertical penetration of meiofauna into the sediment was related to sediment organic matter and sediment chloroplastic pigments. Variation in meiofaunal abundance at different spatial scales was examined at two sites: at 450 and 2300 m on the northern slope of the rise. At both sites, variation between subcores of a multicore (< 10-cm scale) was lower than that of multicores within a deployment (< 1-m scale). However, whilst the highest variance component at the shallow site was for multicores within a deployment, it was between multicore deployments (< 1-km scale) for the deep site. Meiofaunal density and biomass were generally higher on the southern slope of the rise than on the northern slope, a trend probably attributable to high productivity of the overlying Subtropical Front and the flux of more nutritious organic material to the sea floor.  相似文献

This study examines the possible effect of depth on the connectivity and genetic variability in red coral (Corallium rubrum; Octocorallia: Alcyonacea) populations. Patterns of genetic structuring along a depth gradient (from 20 to 70 m) were investigated in two locations of the western Mediterranean coast (northern Catalan and eastern Ligurian Seas) using 10 microsatellite loci. Strong patterns of genetic structuring among the samples were found both within and between the two study sites. In both locations, consistent patterns of reduction in genetic variability along the depth gradient were also observed, suggesting that depth has an important role in determining the patterns of genetic structure in Corallium rubrum. Moreover, a threshold in connectivity was observed among the samples collected across 40–50 m depth, supporting the hypothesis that discrete shallow- and deep-water red coral populations occur. This finding has major implications for management strategies and the conservation of commercially exploited deep red coral populations.  相似文献

Ecklonia radiata is the main foundation species in Australian temperate reefs, yet little has been published on its reproduction and how this may change across its depth range (1–50+ m). In this study, we examined differences in sporophyte morphology and zoospore production during a reproductive season and across four depths (7, 15, 25, and 40 m). Additionally, we examined differences in germination rate, survival, and morphological traits of gametophytes obtained from these four depths, cultured under the same light and temperature conditions. Multivariate morphology of sporophytes differed significantly between deep (~40 m) and shallow sites (7 and 15 m), but individual morphological traits were not significantly different across depths. Total spore production was similar across depths but the peak of zoospore release was observed in February at 15 m of depth (6,154 zoospores · mm?2 of tissue) and the minimum observed in January at 7, 25, and 40 m (1,141, 987, and 214 zoospores · mm?2 of tissue, respectively). The source depth of zoospores did not have an influence in the germination rate or the survival of gametophytes, and only gametophytes sourced from 40 m sites presented significantly less surface area and number of branches. Overall, these results indicate that E. radiata’s reproductive performance does not change across its depth range and that kelp beds reproducing in deeper areas may contribute to the replenishment of their shallow counterparts. We propose that deep kelps may constitute a mechanism of resilience against climate change and anthropogenic disturbances.  相似文献

Explanations for the occurrence of deep-rooted plants in arid and semi-arid ecosystems have traditionally emphasized the uptake of relatively deep soil water. However, recent hydrologic data from arid systems show that soil water potentials at depth fluctuate little over long time periods, suggesting this water may be rarely utilized or replenished. In this study, we examine the distributions of root biomass, soil moisture and nutrient contents to 10-m depths at five semi-arid and arid sites across southwestern USA. We couple these depth distributions with strontium (Sr) isotope data that show deep (>1 m) nutrient uptake is prevalent at four of the five sites. At all of the sites, the highest abundance of one or more of the measured nutrients occurred deep within the soil profile, particularly for P, Ca2+ and Mg2+. Phosphate contents were greater at depth than in the top meter of soil at three of five sites. At Jornada, for example, the 2–3 m depth increment had twice the extractable P as the top meter of soil, despite the highest concentrations of P occurring at the surface. The prevalence of such deep resource pools, and our evidence for cation uptake from them, suggest nutrient uptake as a complementary explanation for the occurrence of deep-rooted plants in arid and semi-arid systems. We propose that hydraulic redistribution of shallow surface water to deep soil layers by roots may be the mechanism through which deep soil nutrients are mobilized and taken up by plants.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

Vegetation pattern, soil attributes, and salinity regimes along with several other environmental factors were studied in a small (11 ha) but unmodified estuary in south Westland, New Zealand. Part of an unmodified 40 km2 catchment within the South-west New Zealand World Heritage Area, the Hapuka Estuary, formed behind a 5-km long barrier beach, provides considerable ecological value as well as baseline, conservation advocacy and educative potentials both in a national and international context. Seventy-four quadrats were sampled randomly along five transects at right angles to the main Hapuka River. Eight plant communities comprising 141 native and thirteen exotic vascular species, were differentiated using multivariate analyses, from bare mud (mean elevation 1.23±0.24 m above Mean Low Water Spring (MLWS)), saltmarsh and shrubland associations through to the adjacent podocarp-broadleaved rain forest (4.53±0.74 m above MLWS). Bulk density of the upper 10 cm of substrate varied from a maximum of 1.15 g cm?3 in the lowest elevation association to a minimum of 0.15 g cm?3 in the rain forest. pH showed a similar trend with values of 6.97 and 4.31, respectively. The reverse pattern was evident with organic matter, with the highest content (53% ODWt) in the rain forest substrate. The water which irrigates the saltmarsh at high tide reaches 15–19» salinity on calm days but may be much less saline when moderate to strong southerly winds counter the tidal influence. Northerly winds, or a southern outlet through the barrier beach, intermittently evident in the past, are likely to enhance salinity of the tidal waters across the saltmarsh. Ordination of the vegetation samples indicated a very strong gradient associated with Axis 1 (eigenvalue=0.872) and Axis 2 (eigenvalue=0.461). Vector fitting of nine measured environmental factors indicated a strong positive correlation with Axis 1 of the ordination, of soil pH, sodium and conductivity, and negative correlations with elevation, soil water, organic matter and potassium contents.  相似文献

Arctic freshwater ecosystems are important habitats for northern wildlife. Arctic climate impact studies suggest that global change could result in major modifications and perturbations of lakes, ponds and wildlife. Most studies focus either on freshwater ecosystems or on animal populations, but few have investigated the links that exist between them. Animal populations have the potential to alter the nutrient inputs in lakes and ponds via faeces. The present study is the first to reveal the impact of an expanding Greater Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens atlantica) population on the limnology of arctic lakes and ponds. A survey of 27 freshwater ecosystems was performed on Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada) in order to identify patterns in limnological conditions. Using a multivariate statistical approach, our study shows that the presence of birds in the catchment of lakes and ponds has an impact on their nutrient status. Concentrations of major ions that were related to the distance from the sea were the main environmental variable explaining the limnological differences observed among lakes and ponds. Nutrient variables that were mostly related to the presence of Snow Geese played a secondary but significant role. N and P concentrations were different among impacted and non‐impacted sites, underlining the impact of animal populations on northern freshwater ecosystems. (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. From April to December 1996 a limnological study was carried out in 17 streams near Medellin, in order to stablish their water quality. The area is located in Piedras Blancas Park (6 degrees 8' 20"N, 75 degrees 30' 20"W) SE of Medellin at 2,400 m altitude. Three sampling periods, encompasing wet and dry season were selected: April-May, August-September and October-December. For qualitative collection methods hand screen and D-net were used. Each station was intensively sampled to collect most macroinvertebrates in all types of habitat. The area sampled in each station was 6 m2. Physicochemical variables in general showed small fluctuations along the study; only conductivity and total dissolved solids exhibited significant changes, all related with high precipitation in the wet season. Macroinvertebrate community consisted of 113 genera, 63 families and seven phyla. Trichoptera was the most abundant group. The results indicate that the freshwater ecosystems in the study area present a high water quality corresponding to a oligo-mesotrophic system.  相似文献

The southwest Greenland coast is made up of large and deep sill fjords. On the shelf, a number of shallow banks separated by deep troughs are located 20–50 km from the coast. We collected three 0.1-m2 van Veen grabs at nine stations along a transect spanning from the inner Godthaabsfjord influenced by glaciers, across the shallow Fyllas Bank and out to the slope of the continental shelf at approximately 1,000 m depth. Along this transect, we explored patterns of macrobenthic diversity, species composition, abundance and biomass. The sampled stations were very different in terms of environmental variables, resulting in large differences in species composition primarily related to differences in depth, silt–clay fraction and chl a content of the sediment (BIO-ENV analysis). Habitat differences also reduced species spatial ranges and the majority of species were found at only one (49%) or two (20%) stations and, consequently, species turnover or beta diversity was high and correlated to differences in depth, silt–clay fraction and median sediment grain size. Species richness and diversity were lowest in sites exposed to sediment disturbance: near the glaciers in the inner fjord (physical disturbance by mineral sedimentation) and at selected stations on the shelf (bioturbation by burrowing sand eel). Alpha diversity and richness were only weakly correlated to environmental parameters, indicating that alpha richness and diversity are influenced by several factors or that relationships are non-linear as was found for species richness and silt–clay fraction.  相似文献

The deep water polychaete fauna is analyzed in this study particularly regarding its composition and variations with depth in the Sigsbee Basin, northwestern region of the Gulf of Mexico. Samples were taken at 10 stations along a bathymetric gradient with depth ranges from 200 to 3760 m with a USNEL (0.25 m2) corer. A total of 287 individuals were identified, from 21 families and 65 species. The most important families, both in terms of abundance and species richness, were: Paraonidae (65.4 ind./0.25 m2, 9 spp.), Cirratulidae (28.93 ind./0.25 m2, 7 spp.) and Spionidae (18.07 ind./0.25 m2, 7 spp.). In general, density tended to decrease with depth with minima at around 2000 m, although two abundance peaks were detected at 3700 and 3760 m, making the pattern seem an inverted parabolic curve. The Shannon-Wiener diversity values varied from 0.54–0.92 at around 2000 m to 3.39 at 3620 m and 3.34 at 3760 m. These results contrast with what is already reported from the North Atlantic and the Tropical Pacific deep benthic communities, where highest diversities are found at 2000 m. Faunal changes evaluated through Beta Diversity (0.08–0.1) and the low similarity found between the stations, emphasized the high variability in the composition of the fauna in the Sigsee Basin, meaning that the faunal composition is practically different at all the sampling stations. Ten species are newly recorded for the Mexican fauna.  相似文献

This study analyses the complicated patterns of vertical distribution of the macroalgal vegetation in an area where brackish and marine waters meet and mix. Variables used to record vegetation characteristics are algal cover, species composition and diversity. The data set includes 64 diving profiles, all from sites exposed to wave action, along a ca. 260 km long coastline. The profiles belong to four categories: coastal sites in the Skagerrak (more marine), coastal sites in the Kattegat (more brackish), coastal sites in the Kattegat after a toxic phytoplankton bloom, and submerged offshore stone reefs in the Kattegat. The highest species diversity was found at the reefs, which are not affected directly by land runoff. At the reefs the 18 most common perennial species penetrate 2–11 m (on average 5.5 m) deeper than at the coastal sites. The virtual absence of sedimentation, and thus the availability of substratum, at the reefs may explain the differences so that the lower limit for the algae is determined by light penetration or by recruitment problems caused by strong currents at the reefs, whereas sedimentation limits the settlement of algae in coastal sites. Ordination analysis based on species composition reveals that the major environmental gradients structuring the algal vegetation in the Kattegat and the Skagerrak are salinity and water depth. The large data set of this study made it possible to quantify the downward dislocation of Atlantic intertidal species to the sublittoral along the Swedish west coast. For example, the mean upper limit of Corallina officinalis is 2 m in the Skagerrak but 12.5 m in the Kattegat and the mean occurrence interval of Fucus serratus is 0.9–2.7 m in the Skagerrak, but 1.1–6.3 m in the Kattegat. This downward dislocation is suggested to be the result of decreased competition when species successively disappear with lower salinity. Comparisons of the present study's results with those of previous investigations show that eight common red algal species have moved upwards compared to the situation before the large-scale eutrophication started in the 1960s, e.g. Cystoclonium purpureum and Polysiphonia elongata by ca. 8 m, Phycodrys rubens and Delesseria sanguinea by ca. 5 m. A toxic phytoplankton bloom affected macroalgal community composition on the whole only slightly, but it had a negative effect on algal cover and species richness below a water depth of ca. 5 m, the algae were visibly damaged and the lower vegetation limit temporarily moved upwards.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Macro-invertebrate species lists were obtained for 268 sites on forty-one river systems throughout Great Britain by qualitative sampling in spring, summer and autumn. Information on twenty-eight environmental variables was also collated for each site. The sites were ordinated on the basis of their species content using detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and classified by two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Correlation coefficients between ordination scores and single environmental variables indicated that Axis 1 distinguished between types of rivers and Axis 2 reflected variation along the length of rivers. A preliminary classification of sites into sixteen groups has been proposed, together with a key which allows new sites to be classified. Information on the species and environmental features which characterize each group is also presented.
2. Multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) was employed to predict the group membership of the 268 sites using the twenty-eight environmental variables. 76.1% of sites were classified correctly. An independent assessment of predictive ability using forty test sites yielded a 50% success rate. Predictive ability was higher for the classification presented in this paper than in fifteen additional classifications produced using data from single seasons and/or different taxonomic treatments.
3. TWINSPAN and MDA were found to be useful approaches to the classification of running-water sites by their macro-invertebrate fauna and the prediction of community type (as indicated by the occurrence of species in the sites comprising the group) using environmental variables. Extension of the scope of the classification, coupled with the use of additional environmental variables to increase predictive ability, is now in progress.  相似文献

An investigation of terrestrial bryophyte species diversity and community structure along an altitudinal gradient from 2,001 to 4,221 m a.s.l. in Gongga Mountain in Sichuan, China was carried out in June 2010. Factors which might affect bryophyte species composition and diversity, including climate, elevation, slope, depth of litter, vegetation type, soil pH and soil Eh, were examined to understand the altitudinal feature of bryophyte distribution. A total of 14 representative elevations were chosen along an altitudinal gradient, with study sites at each elevation chosen according to habitat type (forests, grasslands) and accessibility. At each elevation, three 100 m × 2 m transects that are 50 m apart were set along the contour line, and three 50 cm × 50 cm quadrats were set along each transect at an interval of 30 m. Species diversity, cover, biomass, and thickness of terrestrial bryophytes were examined. A total of 165 species, including 42 liverworts and 123 mosses, are recorded in Gongga mountain. Ground bryophyte species richness does not show any clear elevation trend. The terrestrial bryophyte cover increases with elevation. The terrestrial bryophyte biomass and thickness display a clear humped relationship with the elevation, with the maximum around 3,758 m. At this altitude, biomass is 700.3 g m−2 and the maximum thickness is 8 cm. Bryophyte distribution is primarily associated with the depth of litter, the air temperature and the precipitation. Further studies are necessary to include other epiphytes types and vascular vegetation in a larger altitudinal range.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of a bloom-forming Microcystis population was studied based on the relevant limnological parameters obtained from the lower Nakdong River (Mulgum) during the summer of 1994. Over three months (late June to late September), a high abundance of Microcystis population (mean ± SD, 2.9 ± 8.4 × 105 cells ml−1, n = 40) and algal biomass (mean ± SD, chlorophyll a, 131 ± 346 μg l−1, n = 31) was persistent throughout the entire water column (0–5 m, n = 11). The vertical distribution of carbon content was uneven, with a high concentration near the surface zone (mean ± SD, total, 7.9 ± 7.8; Microcystis, 5.2 ± 8.3 μg C ml−1, n = 15). Incorporating limnological and meteorological factors, a diel study of the vertical distribution of Microcystis showed that the chlorophyll a concentration was highest near the surface zone on a calm night (wind velocity, <2 m s−1, 2300–700) but was evenly distributed on a windy day (>4 m s−1, 1100–1900). Among many possible factors, wind velocity may have played an important role in controlling the vertical distribution of Microcystis in the lower Nakdong River.
