High performance liquid chromatography of biliprotein from Bangia atropurpurea ‘Conchocelis’

Gel-filtration-purified R-phycoerythrin and phycocyanin from the filamentous phase of Bangia atropurpurea were subjected to high performance anion exchange chromatographic separation. The purified R-phycoerythrin was a mixture of three charged-isomers that were well resolved in a Bio-Gel MA7P column by elution with a NaCl gradient in phosphate buffer. These were tentatively called phycoerythrin charged-isomers and were also separable from phycocyanin and allophycocyanin by the same system. Hence, it is suggested that the ion exchange chromatographic and the sample preparation methods presented in this report can be used to distinguish the various natures of biliproteins in red algae in addition to the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique. Isomers of R-phycoerythrin have the same absorption and emission spectra and were studied for their subunit compositions by a PRP-3 reverse phase column chromatography. All three charged-isomers have the same and subunits in common but differ in their subunit.     

Divine powers and exchange with ‘others’ in Melanesia

Marshall Sahlins described divine king forms for a wide range of societies from Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, among others. In this article, I document a divine king form among the Fuyuge people of the Papuan highlands, revising my previous understanding of this powerful figure. At the same time, I argue there is an inextricable connection between Sahlins's theory of divine power and Marilyn Strathern's model of Melanesian gift exchange: both operate according to distinct ideas of otherness. The capacity to engage in transaction derives from cosmological sources while evidence of cosmological power is provided by the ability to engage in transactions with others in effective and powerful ways. More generally, I argue that conventional Melanesian figures of big-men, great men, and chiefs are all versions of the alterity of power in related political forms; each instantiates the mutual relations between cosmological and transactional otherness.     

Cu and Zn in soils treated with sewage sludge: Their ‘extractability’ to reagents compared with their ‘availability’ to plants

Summary Dried digested sewage sludge (cake) was mixed, in varied proportions, with three contrasting soils and cropped intermittently to ryegrass or young barley over a period of 710 days. Results are presented for periods 1–4, 13–16 and 22–23 months after the sludge and soil were mixed. At any given time the quantities of Cu or Zn that wereextractable (by EDTA or acetic acid) from a given soil showed a simple relationship to the ‘total’ quantities of Cu and Zn present. Theavailability of these elements to test crops also showed a simple relationship to their ‘total’ quantities. As a result the quantities available or extractable at any given time appeared to be related to each other also. However, though the extractabilities of Cu and Zn changed with time in some cases, and the availabilities of Cu and Zn changed with time in some cases, the changes were not matched. Increased extractability did not necessarily lead to increased uptake, and in some cases uptake increased even when extractability did not. It should not be assumed too readily therefore that because, at a given time after a soil is sludged, the quantities of added Cu and Zn that are extractable or available are sometimes correlated, the former actually measures the latter.There is no reason to assume that extractants remove all or only the forms of combination of Cu or Zn that may be taken up by crops.

‘Small’-proteoglycan: collagen interactions: Keratan sulphate proteoglycan associates with rabbit corneal collagen fibrils at the ‘a’ and ‘c’ bands

l. Proteoglycans (PGs) in rabbit corneal stroma and mouse sclera have been stained for electron microscopy with Cupromeronic blue in a critical electrolyte concentration (CEC) mode, with and without prior digestion of the tissue by keratanase or chondroitinase ABC to remove the keratan sulphate (KS) or chondroitin-dermatan sulphates (CS or DS) respectively.2. Two classes of PGs, located orthogonally to the corneal collagen fibrils at either the step (band a or c) or gap zone (band d or e) are shown to be KS-PGs or DS-PGs respectively. Four separate and specific PG binding sites on Type I collagen fibrils have thus been identified.3. Rabbit corneal KS and DS PGs each contain two kinds of PG (Gregory JD, Coster L & Damle SP (1982) J. Biol. Chem.257, 6965–6970). We propose that each small protein-rich PG is associated with a specific binding site on the collagen fibril.     

‘Ins’ and ‘outs’ of triple therapy

Chronic oral anticoagulant treatment is obligatory in patients (class I) with mechanical heart valves and in patients with atrial fibrillation with CHADS2 score >1. When these patients undergo percutaneous coronary intervention with placement of a stent, there is also an indication for treatment with aspirin and clopidogrel. Unfortunately, triple therapy is known to increase the bleeding risk. For this group of patients, the bottom line is to find the ideal therapy in patients with indications for both chronic anticoagulation therapy and percutaneous intervention to prevent thromboembolic complications such as stent thrombosis without increasing the risk of bleeding.
