Pteropus livingstonii (Gray 1866) is a highly endangered fruit bat of the Comoro Islands (Western Indian Ocean). Limited information on the bats' population biology is hampering conservation measures. During an expedition in 1992, observations were made on the timing of reproduction of P. livingstonii and the congeneric P. seychellensis comorensis (Nicoll, 1908): P. livingstonii breeds two months earlier than P. s. comorensis . These observations are discussed in relation to what is known about reproduction in Pteropus , and past observations on the Comorien Pteropus species.  相似文献

The cichlid fish, Haplochromis polystigma and Haplochromis livingstonii are piscivorous ambush predators endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa. Experimentally it was found that large adult H. livingstonii could equilibrate to 38 m, but that juveniles were restricted to shallower depths. Mean depth attained by 8 H. polystigma was 45 m but two individuals exceeded the maximum simulated depth (59 m). H. livingstonii had a mean equilibration rate of 4–7 m day−1 for the first 10 m declining to 2·4 m day−1 thereafter. The mean rate of descent for H. polystigma was 3·8 m day−1 for the first 10 m and 2·8 m day−1 thereafter. The fish were decompressed at a rate of a 20% decrease every 12 h. Although cichlid fishes occur down to 200 m depth in Lake Malawi, experimental and field data indicate that the depth distribution of individual species is restricted and that the restriction is largely related to swimbladder physiology. All cichlid species so far tested equilibrate slowly to depth (2 to 5 m a day) and are not capable of rapid decompression.  相似文献

1. Insect herbivores choose their food according to its protein to carbohydrate ratio, but the reasons why different species have contrasting intake targets remain unclear. According to the growth rate hypothesis, P‐rich insects have higher growth rates. It is therefore expected that P‐rich insects will prefer plants that are high in protein (hence in nitrogen, N) and phosphorus (P). 2. To test this hypothesis, the ecological stoichiometry and the interaction network frameworks were combined. The food preferences of 24 plant species by 23 grasshopper species were determined, and the N and P contents of both trophic levels were measured. The weighted mean P and N contents of the consumed plants, which represent the grasshoppers' feeding niche, were highly correlated, indicating that the grasshoppers' diets are spread along a single functional niche axis. The links between the stoichiometry of the plants and their consumers were then tested with the fourth corner analysis, a multivariate technique combining the plant traits, the insect traits and the interaction network. 3. In line with the earlier hypothesis, P‐rich grasshoppers consumed plants high in N and P, probably because their growth rate is higher. These findings therefore introduce a mechanism that accounts for interspecific differences in diet preference. They also contribute to an understanding of how herbivore communities might respond to P and N limitation in ecosystems, and how complex interaction networks can influence biogeochemical cycles of N and P.  相似文献

Larvae of Pseudaletia unipuncta are moderately susceptible to infections caused by entomopathogenic nematodes, being a desirable host to study pathogenic processes caused by Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Steinernema carpocapsae, and Steinernema glaseri and their associated bacteria. The ability of the infective stage of these nematodes to invade hosts is quite different. S. carpocapsae invades the highest number of insects and presents the highest penetration rate, followed by H. bacteriophora. Regression analysis between the number of insects parasitized and the number of IJs counted per insect, over time, showed a high correlation for S. carpocapsae whereas for H. bacteriophora it was low. Dose-response was most evident at a concentration below 100 IJs per insect on H. bacteriophora, whereas on S. carpocapsae it was found for doses ranging from 100 to 2,000 IJs. Student's t test analysis of dose-response showed parallel, yet unequal, slopes for both strains of H. bacteriophora, whereas distinct regressions were obtained for S. carpocapsae and S. glaseri, thus, evidencing each species develop a distinct pathogenic process. Insects injected with Photorhabdus luminescens died within 50 h after injection, whereas those treated with X. nematophila died much later. Moreover, the mortality in insects exposed to H. bacteriophora complex and injected with P. luminescens was close, but insects injected with bacteria died faster. Insect mortality in treatments with complexes S. carpocapsae and S. glaseri was significantly higher than that which was observed in insects injected with symbiotic bacteria.  相似文献

Odors of pollen and whole flowers were compared in taxonomically unrelated species that offer pollen as the only food reward to pollinators. Volatiles were collected using headspace adsorption and analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The odor of pollen was found to be chemically distinct from the total flower odor, and this pollen-odor distinctness varied among the three species. In Papaver rhoeas (Papaveraceae), the contrast between pollen and whole-flower odors was most subtle, with differences observed only in the proportions of individual volatiles (almost exclusively aliphatic hydrocarbons). In Filipendula vulgaris (Rosaceae), pollen volatiles were fewer than in the flowers (comprising mainly benzenoids and fatty-acid derivatives) and their relative proportions produced an odor dominated by 2-heptadecanone that contrasted strikingly with the flower odor dominated by 2-phenyl ethanol. In Lupinus polyphyllus (Fabaceae), the pollen odor contained fewer volatiles and in differing proportions than the flower fragrance (comprising almost exclusively isoprenoids). The findings add to earlier chemical evidence of odor contrasts between pollen and other flower parts in two other species. Drawing on information from pollination studies of these various species, it is suggested that pollen odor is used by pollen-foraging insects both to discriminate between plant species and to assess reward availability in individual flowers, and that it might in addition serve a protective function against destructive flower-feeding insects and pathogens.  相似文献

Many species of honeydew-producing Homopteran insects have Tniitualistic relationships with ants which defend them against their natural enemies in return for honeydew. In many cases of this type of mtitualism (trophobiosis), a particular honioplcran can associate with a range of mutualistic ant species. We studied the influence of alternation of two ant species, Lasius niger and Pristomyrmex pungens. both of which are mutualistic partners of the citrus mealybug Pseudococcus citriculus , on population growth of their trophobiont mealybug. The growth rate of the mealybug populaiion was significantly higher with attendance by either ant species than without it throughout the year. However, in the field, the mealybug population was significantly larger on trees where a L. niger colony made its territory than on trees where a P. putigens colony made its territory. When the attending ant species changed from L. niger to P. pungens , the mealybug population significantly decreased compared with the population that L. nigcr continued to attend. In contrast, the mealybug population increased following the reverse shift, from P. pungens to L. niger. These results indicate thai, for the mealybug. L. niger is a more effective mutualistic partner than P. pungctis. This deviation was due to a difference in attack behavior by ihc two ant species. Behavioral responses by attending ants to artificial models of natural enemies were more aggressive in L. niger than in P. pungens. The territories of the two ant species were completely separated, and territory takeovers of one ant species by the other were occasionally observed. These facts suggest that interspecific competition between the two ant species is an important factor in determining the spatial distribution of the two species. Thus, we conclude that interspecific competition between the two ant species indirectly affects the population growth of their common trophobiont mealybug.  相似文献

Flowers of many plant species are visited by both birds and insects, making it necessary to establish their relative contributions to seed set. In Protea, available evidence points to an overwhelming preponderance of bird-pollination systems in the genus, but the scented flowers of several dwarf grassland “sugarbush” species suggest that some Protea species may be adapted for insect pollination. In this study, we used both selective exclusion of vertebrates and complete exclusion of all visitors to investigate whether the insects that visit the scented flowerheads of three Protea species (Protea dracomontana, Protea simplex and Protea welwitschii) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa contribute to seed production. We also performed supplemental hand pollinations to test for pollen limitation. Seed set was generally higher in inflorescences subjected to vertebrate exclusion than in those from which all visitors were excluded, suggesting that fertile cross-pollen was deposited by insects, but these differences were slight because of high levels of self-fertilization in the study species. Pollen deposition and pollen tube growth were similar for vertebrate-excluded and open-pollinated inflorescences. Supplemental hand-pollination treatments revealed that seed set in P. simplex and P. welwitschii was not pollen-limited. Overall seed set was low, typical of the family Proteaceae, and infructescences were highly predated by lepidopteran larvae. We conclude that insects are likely to contribute to seed set of the study species, but further studies using molecular markers are required to establish the actual level of insect-mediated outcrossing.  相似文献

贵南沙蜥分布在青海省贵南县的一片长×宽约为30 km×20 km的连续沙丘,该沙丘被周缘草地隔离,贵南沙蜥主要在沙地与草地接触带的沙地一侧活动。采用3条样线共150个陷阱研究贵南沙蜥在草地与沙地交界线两侧的活动洞穴空间分布特征与潜在的可利用性昆虫食物资源多样性,并分析洞穴空间分布特征与昆虫种类以及数量分布的关系。研究共捕获1236个昆虫个体,隶属于2纲10目26科42种,其中昆虫纲有7目21科37种978个,蛛形纲有3目5科5种258个;草地采集的昆虫有2纲9目22科37种570个,沙地有2纲9目21科33种666个。草地昆虫的Shannon-Wiener,Simpson多样性指数与均匀度指数均大于沙地,表明草地的昆虫食物资源较丰富且分布均匀。研究表明贵南沙蜥在沙地环境活动洞穴数量较多,且离交界线越近洞穴分布数量越多;草地生境活动洞穴空间分布与离交界线距离无相关性,相对沙地数量较少且空间上分布较均匀。草地样方捕获的昆虫种类和数量以及沙地样方捕获的昆虫数量都与离分界线的距离无关,但沙地上昆虫种类与离分界线的距离呈高度负相关。研究表明贵南沙蜥沙地活动洞穴空间分布与昆虫种类分布特征显著相关。  相似文献

Myrtnarachne is a genus of ant-like salticids. Eight species were observed feeding, in nature, in Australia, Kenya, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, on varied types of insects but not ants. The behaviour of M. lupata , from Australia, was studied in the laboratory. Predatory sequences were found to differ considerably from those of typical salticids. Attacking by lunging instead of leaping and the pronounced use of pre-attack tapping are especially noteworthy. The unusual behaviour of M. lupata when preying on insects is consistent with maintenance of ant mimicry. Myrmarachne lupata also preys on the eggs of other spiders which it extracts from their nests. The males of many species have very large chelicerae, and the large chelicerae of M. lupata males influence the course of predatory sequences, with insects and with eggs.  相似文献

Summary The distributions and abundances of five species of Stenodemini (Heteroptera) and one of Rhopalidae (Heteroptera) were monitored over a 2-year period on a 1 ha square of limestone grassland near Oxford.At the same time, the distribution of all grass species in the area was mapped.By comparing the distributions of insects with their potential foodplants, and by carrying out feeding trials on selected insects, an outline of the foodplants selected by different species of insect was built up.Each insect fed on several foodplants at once, but this spectrum often changed seasonally and with the age of the insect. Most grass species were used by at least one insect species.There were considerable overlaps between the feeding spectra of different bugs. However, ecological separation was usually achieved by emergence timing and/or feeding on different parts of the same grass species.One species pair remained with an almost complete overlap in the resources that were measured (Notostira elongata and Megaloceraea recticornis). Since these bugs reached very high combined densities, and one of them suffered very high mortality at a time of overlap, it is possible that these two species were competitors.Sward height did not influence insect distributions within the range present on the study site. Nymphal parasites were extremely rare and unlikely to have affected their hosts' distributions.  相似文献

猪屎豆( Crotalaria pallida)为典型的蝶形花植物,分布极广,是路边或遭破坏生境中最常见的先锋种之一,野外观察未发现其有营养生殖的现象,主要为种子繁殖。该研究通过对自然生境中猪屎豆开花物候、访花昆虫及繁育系统的研究,旨在从繁殖的角度阐述其快速扩张的能力。结果表明:尽管猪屎豆的主要访花昆虫是蜜蜂,但蜜蜂的访花频率极低[(1.73±1.30)次/花序·h-1],且在整个花期内花药和柱头均被龙骨瓣包裹,蜜蜂访花时未成功接触柱头和花粉,不能实现传粉,因此蜜蜂不是猪屎豆有效的传粉昆虫,这与假说“蝶形花普遍是对膜翅目昆虫,尤其是对蜜蜂传粉的适应”不一致。人工授粉结果显示,猪屎豆为自交亲和种,不存在无融合生殖现象,其繁殖主要通过主动自交生产种子来实现,且在自交过程中长短花药都参与主动自交。这种自交方式不同于其他蝶形花植物的主动自交仅由短花药实现。对猪屎豆而言,长短花药均参与自交能够增加柱头的授粉几率,保证其在不利的生境中成功结籽,是其成功扩张的关键因素之一。  相似文献

Bamboos are known as long-living monocarpic plants that exhibit synchronous flowering at long intervals. It has been reported that florivory has a critical effect on their seed production in bamboos, especially in small scale flowering patches. In this study, we aimed to determine species composition and life history of florivorous insects in multiple bamboo species. We collected the inflorescences of 12 bamboo species from 15 sites in Japan from 2017 to 2019 and recorded insect assemblages found in the flowers. Five different insect species were observed to feed on the flowers of bamboo species. Among these, the larvae of two Dicraeus species were the most widely observed florivorous insects of the bamboo species. The other insects included the larvae of Cecidomyiidae sp., which was frequently observed on Sasa species, and the other two insects were Epuraea submicrurula, and Dimorphopterus japonicus. These insects were oviposited on the florets during the budding period. In addition, predators and parasitoids were found in the bamboo flowers. Our findings suggest that the bamboos flowers were mainly consumed by dipteran larvae. Insect species composition and frequency varied among bamboo species and sites. Comparing the frequency of the florivorous insects among bamboo flowering patches, including mass flowering patches, in different areas is needed in future studies.  相似文献

Ribosomal protein S 13 gene has been cloned and analyzed in many organisms,but there are few documents relating to insects. In this communication, the full-length cDNA sequence of ribosomal protein S 13 gene in the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella(Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), was determined by using PCR amplification technique. The features of the ribosomal protein S 13 gene sequence were analyzed and the deduced amino acids sequence was compared with those from other insects. The results of multi-alignment of the amino acid sequences between the diamondback moth and other insect species revealed that this gene sequence is highly conserved in insects. Based on maximum likelihood method, a phylogenetic tree was constructed from 10 different species using PHYLIP software. It showed that nematode is one separate lineage and the five insect speciesbe long to another lineage, whereas those species higher than insects form the third one. The pattern of this phylogenetic tree evidently represented the evolution of different species.  相似文献

Abstract Habitat instability associated with seasonal crop succession in broad-acre farming systems presents a problem for the conservation and utilisation of beneficial insects in annual field crops. The present paper describes two experiments used to measure the potential of seven plant species to be utilised as winter refuges to support and conserve the predatory bug Pristhesancus plagipennis (Walker). In the first experiment, replicated plots of canola ( Brassica napus ), red salvia ( Salvia coccinea ), niger ( Guizotia abyssinica ), linseed ( Linum usitatissimum ), lupins ( Lupinus angustifolius ), and lucerne ( Medicago falcata ) were planted in a randomized experiment during Autumn 1998. Upon crop establishment, adults and nymphs of P. plagipennis were released into treatment plots and their numbers were assessed, along with those of their potential prey, throughout the ensuing winter months. Post-release sampling suggested that canola and niger retained a proportion of adult P. plagipennis , while niger, lucerne and canola retained some nymphs. The other plant species failed to support P. plagipennis nymphs and adults postrelease. In the second experiment, niger was compared with two lines of sunflower ( Helianthus annus ). Both sunflower lines harboured significantly higher ( P  < 0.05) densities of P. plagipennis nymphs than did niger. The more successful refuge treatments (sunflower, niger and canola) had an abundance of yellow flowers that were attractive to pollinating insects, which served as supplementary prey on which P. plagipennis were observed to feed. Sunflower and niger also supported high densities of the prey insect Creontiades dilutus (Stål) and provided protective leafy canopies which supplied shelter during the winter months. The potential and limitations for using each plant species as a winter refuge to retain P. plagipennis during winter are discussed.  相似文献

Oviposition responses ofPieris rapae L. andP. napi oleracea Harris to nine crucifers, one Capparidaceae and one Tropaeolaceae were directly compared under controlled conditions. Chemical fractions from these plants were also tested on both insects for the presence of oviposition stimulants or deterrents. The results showed that plant chemistry is a key factor in differential selection of potential hosts by thesePieris species. Some plant species were equally acceptable to bothPieris species. However,P. rapae preferred cabbage over most test plants whereasP. napi oleracea strongly preferred plant species that were avoided byP. rapae. The observed preferences were explained in most cases by the presence of stimulants and deterrents in extracts of the plants. The twoPieris species have apparently evolved differential sensitivities to the chemical stimuli that trigger or deter oviposition. The balance of positively and negatively interpreted sensory signals evoked by plant chemicals obviously plays an important role in acceptance or rejection of a plant by both species. The role of specific glucosinolates and differing structure-activity relationships is suggested.  相似文献

A large proportion of gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar (L.)) are likely to experience multiple species diets in the field due to natural wandering and host switching which occurs with these insects. Nutritional indices in fourth and fifth instar gypsy moth larvae were studied in the field for insects that were switched to a second host species when they were fourth instars. The tree species used as hosts were northern pin oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis E. J. Hill), white oak (Q. alba L.), big-tooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.), and trembling aspen (P. tremuloides Michx.). Conclusions of this study include: 1) Insects which fed before the host switch on northern pin oak performed better after the host switch than did insects with other types of early dietary experience. While the northern pin oak-started insects had very low relative food consumption rates on their second host species immediately after the switch, one instar later they had the highest ranked consumption rates. During both instars they had the second highest efficiencies of converting ingested and digested food to body mass. High food consumption rates and relatively high efficiency of food conversion helped these insects to obtain the highest ranked mean relative growth rates in the fifth instar compared to the relative growth rates obtained by insects from any of the other first host species. 2) Among the four host species examined, a second host of trembling aspen was most advantageous for the insects. Feeding on this species after the switch led to higher larval weights and higher relative growth rates for insects than did any of the other second host species. The insects on trembling aspen attained excellent growth despite only mediocre to low food conversion efficiencies. The low efficiencies were offset by high relative food consumption rates. 3) Low food consumption rates often tend to be paired with high efficiency of conversion and vice versa. 4) There is no discernable tendency for the first plant species eaten to cause long-term inductions which affect the ability of gypsy moths to utilize subsequent host plants. Insects did not tend to consume more, grow faster, or be more efficient if their second host plant was either the same as their rearing plant or congeneric to it. Methods are delineated which allow values of nutritional indices to be obtained for insects on intact host plants under field conditions. These methods are useful for the purpose of answering questions about the relative effects that different diet treatments have on insect response.  相似文献

The Louisiana red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, has had a major impact on aquatic ecosystems in Europe and America where it has been introduced for human consumption. In Lake Naivasha, where it was introduced in 1970, it is suspected of causing the complete disappearance of native floating-leaved and submerged plants by 1982 and again by 1996; recovery of submerged plants occurred in between, concurrent with a decline in P. clarkii. Examination of the feeding of P. clarkii by microscopic analysis of gut contents collected from the lake confirmed information from both its native and exotic ranges; that it is an omnivore with green plants and insects the predominant items recognised. Feeding experiments confirmed this omnivory, with a preference from herbivory over carnivory. They further showed the importance of native plants as opposed to exotic water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes. It is concluded that P. clarkii could well have accounted for the observed elimination of native plant species in Lake Naivasha; the cyclical nature of populations of submerged plant species and of P. clarkii in inverse proportion to each other lead us to hypothesise that P. clarkii is a `keystone' species in the lake ecosystem.  相似文献

Primula sieboldii E. Morren is a heterostylous clonal herb that is widely distributed in Japan but in danger of extinction in the wild. The existence of pollinators in each habitat is imperative for its long-term survival, because seeds can be produced only by insect cross-pollination between different flower morphs. In this study, we identified the pollinators of P. sieboldii in a wild habitat in Hiroshima as those insects that we observed to (a) put the proboscis into a corolla tube, (b) deposit pollen grains on the proboscis, and (c) have a proboscis of appropriate length and width. Effective pollinators were identified from their contribution to pollination. In 2015 and 2016, the flower visitations of 232 and 558 insects, respectively, were recorded and 85 and 13 insects were captured. Two Bombylius species, B. major L. and B. shibakawae Matsumura, accounted for 90% of flower-visiting insects in both years. All 14 species that we captured were considered pollinators of P. sieboldii, because they had proboscises that were long enough to reach pollen and that had pollen grains deposited on them. The total visitation rate of “Bombyliidae” was the highest among all pollinator categories. The results of potential pollen transport per flower per hour, which was based on total pollen number and total visitation rate of each pollinator category, indicated that “Bombyliidae” species were the most effective pollinators of P. sieboldii in this habitat.  相似文献

Despite the relative richness of spider species across the Southern Ocean islands remarkably little information is available on their biology. Here, the critical thermal limits of an indigenous (Myro kerguelenensis, Desidae) and an introduced (Prinerigone vagans, Linyphiidae) spider species from Marion Island were studied after 7–8 days acclimation to 0, 5, 10 and 15°C. Critical thermal minima (CTMin) were low in these species by comparison with other spiders and insects measured to date, and ranged from −6 to −7°C in M. kerguelenensis and from −7 to −8°C in P. vagans. In contrast, critical thermal maxima (CTMax) were similar to other insects on Marion Island (M. kerguelenensis: 35.0–35.6°C; P. vagans: 35.1–36.0°C), although significantly lower than those reported for other spider species in the literature. The magnitude of acclimation responses in CTMax was lower than those in CTMin for both species and this suggests decoupled responses to acclimation. Whilst not conclusive, the results raise several important considerations: that oxygen limitation of thermal tolerance needs to be more widely investigated in terrestrial species, that indigenous and alien species might differ in the nature and extent of their plasticity, and that upper and lower thermal tolerance limits might be decoupled in spiders as is the case in insects.  相似文献
