Physical health is affected by physiological aging that impacts on all tissues and organs, notably sensorial systems (hearing, sight), the locomotory and the immunological systems (lowering of resistance to infections). There is an increase with age in the incidence of many cancers (particularly breast, prostate, and colon cancers) and cardiovascular diseases. Regular check-ups are useful in order to take appropriate measures in time. It is important that people maintain regular physical activity and a balanced diet even up to an advanced age and the elderly must learn to adapt themselves to the ever-changing abilities of their organism. It is possible to slow down the aging process through good hygiene and often to maintain autonomy until the end of life. Mental health is threatened by impairment of mental functions, depressive tendencies, and the risk of senile dementia that cannot be foreseen or avoided. It appears that keeping intellectually active and having a good level of education impact favorably on mental aging. Social health depends, for a large part, on the way society accepts and treats the elderly. They must be kept integrated into society and allowed to live at home for as long as possible. Any measures of rejection, discrimination, and exclusion should be opposed. The dignity of the elderly must be respected and activities giving them a feeling of usefulness should be encouraged. It is important to help families who care for their parents at home, to develop and evaluate healthcare networks, and encourage medical professionals and social services to work together. The change in the demographic structure of France is a considerable phenomenon requiring a long-term strategy and not only superficial and cosmetic measures.  相似文献

Previous theoretical works showed that chemical reactions in micro- and nano-droplets, bubbles and solid particles were strongly affected by their confinement. In particular, the smallness of the systems leads to high internal pressure compared to the external pressure, which then significantly modifies the values of chemical equilibrium and kinetic constants. In addition, surface tension or surface stress, reactional dilatation and surface charge play also a major role on the chemical reactivity. As living systems are also made of very complex dispersed subsystems, i.e. organelles, it seemed obvious to illustrate our theory by some biological actual examples encountered in pulmonary alveolae, in vacuolae and in medical applications, such as dissolution of gallstones.  相似文献

建立多个物种共存的农作模式、利用物种多样性控制有害生物是农业可持续发展的重要途径.本文综述了国内外稻田物种多样性利用模式的研究进展,论述了稻田多个物种共存对水稻病、虫、草的控制效果及作用机理.稻田系统多个物种共存模式如稻田养鱼模式、稻田养鸭模式、稻-萍-鱼或稻-萍-鸭模式等,对水稻纹枯病、稻飞虱、稻纵卷叶螟和杂草有显著的控制作用;稻田系统多个物种共存的另一类模式如水稻品种多样性混合种植、稻-茭白间作和稻-湿生作物间作等,可明显降低稻瘟病等病害的发生与流行.稻田多个物种共存模式对病虫草控制的效果和机理研究仍需要从作物、分子生物学和化学生态等方面做进一步的研究探讨.  相似文献

The mass of published nucleic acid sequence data has required the design of several computerized data bases. We show that this activity is related to the methodology of System Analysis and that data bases are a means of modeling biological knowledge. In the process of L-phenylalanine oxidation by Proteus mirabilis cytoplasmic membrane, hydrogen peroxide was produced at a rate corresponding to 1-3 per cent of the total electron flow (30-110 nmoles min-1mg-1). Peroxide was estimated using a fluorimetric assay with horseradish peroxidase, or by anodic oxidation on a platinum electrode. When using the former method, superoxide dismutase decreased the apparent yield of peroxide, a fact suggesting that H2O2 was in part the dismutation product of superoxide radicals. However the superoxide dismutase effect could be an artefact due to the generation of some superoxide during the peroxidatic reaction in the assay. Adrenaline was the reagent used for the detection of superoxide. There was no significant emergence of superoxide as the result of phenylalanine oxidation by the membrane (specific activity lower than 1-2 nmoles min-1mg-1). Thus it seemed that superoxide was not an intermediate for the bulk of H2O2 formed in this system. According to the results, peroxide was probably formed at a stage of electron transport earlier than the cytochrome level. The membrane phenylalanine dehydrogenase could be a site where peroxide was evolved in these experiments.  相似文献

Functional genomics has been driven greatly by emerging experimental technologies. Its development as a scientific discipline will be enhanced by systems biology, which generates novel, quantitative hypotheses via modelling. However, in order to better assist crop improvement, the impact of developing functional genomics needs to be assessed at the crop level, given a projected diminishing effect of genetic alteration on phenotypes from the molecule to crop levels. This review illustrates a recently proposed research field, crop systems biology, which is located at the crossroads of crop physiology and functional genomics, and intends to promote communications between the two. Past experiences with modelling whole-crop physiology indicate that the layered structure of biological systems should be taken into account. Moreover, modelling not only plays a role in data synthesis and quantitative prediction, but certainly also in heuristics and system design. These roles of modelling can be applied to crop systems biology to enhance its contribution to our understanding of complex crop phenotypes and subsequently to crop improvement. The success of crop systems biology needs commitments from scientists along the entire knowledge chain of plant biology, from molecule or gene to crop and agro-ecosystem.  相似文献

The constant and rapid increase of life expectancy in western countries is associated with a major ageing of our populations. In these conditions, we can expect an epidemic progression of most chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, the main causes of death in the world. The global burden of these diseases will have a dramatic impact on the health and on the socio-economical context of our societies. From a global point of view, the occurrence and progression of these multifactorial diseases rely upon the nature and intensity of the environmental determinants we are exposed to all life long, but also to our individual genetic susceptibility. Through the determination of this higher susceptibility to an environmental risk factor and the understanding of its mechanisms of action, prevention and management efforts will be better focused. In such multifactorial affections, the development and the transmission of the disease do not follow the simple laws of monogenic Mendelian models. The complexity of this transmission is associated with the influence, at various degrees, of several genes and of a close interaction between this particular genetic susceptibility and environmental risk factors. With the recent development of automated and high throughput molecular biology techniques and their use in epidemiological studies, gene expression regulation and post genomic studies, the determination of sub-groups facing a higher individual genetic susceptibility has begun. This determination will offer new clues for a better-targeted disease management.  相似文献

Biological systems are composed of different levels of organization. Usually, one considers the atomic, molecular, cellular, individual, population, community and ecosystem levels. These levels of organization also correspond to different levels of observation of the system, from microscopic to macroscopic, i.e., to different time and space scales. The more microscopic the level is, the faster the time scale and the smaller the space scale are. The dynamics of the complete system is the result of the coupled dynamical processes that take place in each of its levels of organization at different time scales. Variables aggregation methods take advantage of these different time scales to reduce the dimension of mathematical models such as a system of ordinary differential equations. We are going to study the dynamics of a system which is hierarchically organized in the sense that it is composed of groups of elements that can be themselves divided into further smaller sub-groups and so on. The hierarchical structure of the system results from the fact that the intra-group interactions are assumed to be larger than inter-group ones. We present aggregation methods that allow one to build a reduced model that governs a few global variables at the slow time scale.  相似文献

Since ever infectious diseases have been a major hazard for the armed forces in operations. Nowadays our nations are facing the threat of terrorism, including bioterrorism. This threat is much more related to the potential disorganization of the society than to the lethal effects of the agents. Biological weapons are considered more like terror weapons than like mass destruction weapons, hence the importance of preparing specific defence measures. The know-how acquired from the struggle against natural infectious diseases is a useful help to face the biological weapon threats and risks. Likewise, the defence attitude is based on three pillars: anticipating, managing, and restoring. This military as well as civilian defence attitude applies to six important functions: (1) alert, (2) detection, diagnosis and identification, (3) medical countermeasures (drugs, vaccines and sera), (4) medical care in hospital, (5) training and information, (6) research and development of dedicated technologies.  相似文献

Histamine is a biogenic amine performing pleiotropic effects in humans, involving tasks within the immune and neuroendocrine systems, neurotransmission, gastric secretion, cell life and death, and development. It is the product of the histidine decarboxylase activity, and its effects are mainly mediated through four different G-protein coupled receptors. Thus, histamine-related effects are the results of highly interconnected and tissue-specific signalling networks. Consequently, alterations in histamine-related factors could be an important part in the cause of multiple rare/orphan diseases. Bearing this hypothesis in mind, more than 25 rare diseases related to histamine physiopathology have been identified using a computationally assisted text mining approach. These newly integrated data will provide insight to elucidate the molecular causes of these rare diseases. The data can also help in devising new intervention strategies for personalized medicine for multiple rare diseases.  相似文献

Enhancing diversity within crop systems can have benefits including increased resource use efficiency and productivity, and increased control of weeds, pests and diseases. Some benefits are expected to operate through biodiversity-driven insurance effects, whereby enhanced diversity increases the chance that a system component can compensate for the impacts of adverse environmental conditions. Studies of insurance effects in natural and agricultural systems have provided equivocal results. As insurance effects are expected to play a key role in helping to maintain crop production in more variable future climates (for example under periodic drought), it is essential to know when and how they operate and interact with other potentially beneficial biodiversity-function effects. Using barley as a model crop, and pot-based plant communities, we studied the interactive effects of barley cultivar diversity and drought stress on plant productivity and the response of agricultural weeds, fungal disease, and aphids. Drought reduced barley and weed biomass, but there were no interactive effects of drought and cultivar diversity on plant productivity. Increased cultivar diversity enhanced weed suppression, potentially as a result of reduced functional space availability, and reduced disease severity on a susceptible cultivar; these effects were consistent irrespective of drought. Aphid responses were more complex, with idiosyncratic response patterns on individual cultivars. Overall, we found no evidence of an insurance effect of enhanced cultivar diversity for the negative impact of drought on crop productivity, but our results indicate that other positive biodiversity effects (weed and disease suppression) are maintained under drought. However, it is clear that not all potentially-beneficial biodiversity effects respond in the same manner. Field trials are now needed to explore whether a range of responses also occur in crop field settings, whether these can be expected to occur predictably under a range of environmental conditions, and how these then impact on crop production.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a multi-agent framework for data mining in electromyography. This application, based on a web interface, provides a set of functionalities allowing to manipulate 1000 medical cases and more than 25,000 neurological tests stored in a medical database. The aim is to extract medical information using data mining algorithms and to supply a knowledge base with pertinent information. The multi-agent platform gives the possibility to distribute the data management process between several autonomous entities. Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is a global stressor with potentially far-reaching ecological impacts. In the first quantitative analysis of the effects of UVB on aquatic organisms, we used meta-analytic techniques to explore the effects of UVB on survival and growth in freshwater and marine systems. Based on the large body of literature on the effects of UVB in aquatic systems, we predicted that UVB would have different effects in different habitats, experimental venues, trophic groups and life history stages. Contrary to our predictions, we found an overall negative effect of UVB on both survival and growth that crossed life histories, trophic groups, habitats and experimental venues. UVB had larger negative effects on growth in embryos compared with later life history stages. Despite the overall negative effect of UVB, effect sizes varied widely. In the survival analyses, no relationship between mean effect size and taxonomic groups or levels of exposure to UVB was detected. In the growth analyses, a larger negative effect on protozoans was observed. Our analyses suggest that the effects of UVB in aquatic systems are large and negative but highly variable between organisms. Variation in susceptibility may have important implications for population and community structure.  相似文献

The prevalence of dementia dramatically increases during ageing, and this puts a serious strain on the optimism brought by the continuous increase in life expectancy observed in most industrialised countries. Diseases that produce dementia are numerous, and the cognitive deficit results from lesions of various regions and from different mechanisms. This modulates the possible prediction, prevention and cure of dementia. Emphasis is put on the necessity of, and prerequisite for, efficient research in the field of dementia. Three paradigmatic dementing disorders are reviewed. Subacute spongiform encephalopathies (prion diseases) constitute a biological enigma and a public health concern. In Alzheimer's disease and vascular or mixed dementia, the clinical diagnosis is still imperfect, and this hinders research. Distinguishing and accurately identifying the various types of dementia is essential for understanding their mechanism and for developing efficient therapeutic strategies, preventive and curative. For such objectives, the study of human brain tissue will remain mandatory until non-invasive markers and additional models are available. Ethical reasons banish the use of cerebral biopsy and favour the promotion of autopsy.  相似文献

Sept nouvelles espèces appartenant à ce groupe sont décrites, illustrées et comparées aux espèces proches: deux espèces aux ailes normalement développées, S. manni n. sp. et S. perissinottoi n. sp., et cinq espèces brachyptères, S. jossoi n. sp., S. janssensi n. sp., S. bouyeri n. sp., S. felschei n. sp. et S. usambaricus n. sp. Une autre espèce appartenant au groupe étudié, S. alveatus Boucomont, 1935, se révèle également être brachyptère. Elles constituent les premiers exemples de brachyptérisme au sein de ce genre. Embedding a simple Michaelis-Menten enzyme in a gel slice may allow the catalysis of not only scalar processes but also vectorial ones, including uphill transport of a substrate between two compartments, and may make it seem as if two enzymes or transporters are present or as if an allosterically controlled enzyme/transporter is operating. The values of kinetic parameters of an enzyme in a partially hydrophobic environment are usually different from those actually measured in a homogeneous aqueous solution. This implies that fitting kinetic data (expressed in reciprocal co-ordinates) from in vivo studies of enzymes or transporters to two straight lines or a sigmoidal curve does not prove the existence of two different membrane mechanisms or allosteric control. In the artificial transport systems described here, a functional asymmetry was sufficient to induce uphill transport, therefore, although the active transport systems characterised so far correspond to proteins asymmetrically anchored in a membrane, the past or present existence of structurally symmetrical systems of transport in vivo cannot be excluded. The fact that oscillations can be induced in studies of the maintenance of the electrical potential of frog skin by addition of lithium allowed evaluation of several parameters fundamental to the functioning of the system in vivo (e.g., relative volumes of internal compartments, characteristic times of ionic exchanges between compartments). Hence, under conditions that approach real biological complexity, increasing the complexity of the behaviour of the system may provide information that cannot be obtained by a conventional, reductionist approach.  相似文献

The prevalence of type-2 diabetes has dramatically increased worldwide during the last few decades. While lifestyle factors (sedentariness, noxious food), together with genetic susceptibility, are well-known actors, there is accumulating evidence suggesting that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may also play a pathophysiological role in the occurrence of metabolic diseases. Both experimental and epidemiological evidence support a role for early and chronic exposure to low doses of chemical pollutants with endocrine and metabolic disrupting effects. Most are present in the food chain and accumulate in the fat mass after absorption. In rodents, bisphenol A stimulates synthesis and secretion of pancreatic β cells and disturbs insulin signaling in liver, muscle and adipose tissue through epigenetic changes leading to insulin resistance and β cell impairment. In humans, epidemiological reports show statistical link between exposure to pesticides, polychlorinated bisphenyls, bisphenol A, phthalates, dioxins or aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbides or heavy metals and DT2 after acute accidental releases or early in life and/or chronic, low doses exposure. More prospective, longitudinal studies are needed to determine the importance of such environmental risk factors.  相似文献

The activity of 11 groups of invertebrates, mainly predators and parasites, was investigated in 2005 and 2006 in a plot trial system on a farm in northern England, where the effects of organic and conventional fertility and crop protection management were separated within different crop types. Invertebrate activity was assessed using pitfall traps and suction sampling. Mixed effects models indicated that crop type significantly affected activity in all 11 groups. Crop protection applications had only a limited impact on activity but fertility management had considerable effects in some crops. Most differences were in barley, wheat and grass/clover, with less in vegetable and bean plots. Carabidae, Lycosidae, Staphylinidae, Linyphiidae and Braconidae gave consistent responses to fertility management, with more activity of the first two groups in organic plots and more of the other three in conventional plots. However, Coccinellidae and Ichneumonidae were not consistent in their activity between crops. After the effects of crop type had been partialled out, a constrained ordination showed that the novel combination of organic fertility and conventional crop protection had the most influence on group activity, with the combination of organic fertility and organic crop protection also significant. Maximising the activity of beneficial invertebrates in organic and sustainable farming systems requires a basic understanding of the effects of both crop type and fertility management, as well as crop protection.  相似文献
