In this study, the homogenized anisotropic elastic properties of single bone lamellae are computed using a finite element unit cell method. The resulting stiffness tensor is utilized to calculate indentation moduli for multiple indentation directions in the lamella plane which are then related to nanoindentation experiments. The model accounts for different fibril orientation patterns in the lamellae—the twisted and orthogonal plywood pattern, a 5-sublayer pattern and an X-ray diffraction-based pattern. Three-dimensional sectional views of each pattern facilitate the comparison to transmission electron (TEM) images of real lamella cuts. The model results indicate, that the 5-sublayer- and the X-ray diffraction-based patterns cause the lamellae to have a stiffness maximum between 0° and 45° to the osteon axis. Their in-plane stiffness characteristics are qualitatively matching the experimental findings that report a higher stiffness in the osteon axis than in the circumferential direction. In contrast, lamellae owning the orthogonal or twisted plywood fibril orientation patterns have no preferred stiffness alignment. This work shows that the variety of fibril orientation patterns leads to qualitative and quantitative differences in the lamella elastic mechanical behavior. The study is a step toward a deeper understanding of the structure—mechanical function relationship of bone lamellae.  相似文献

Each cercus on the adult cricket Acheta domesticus bears 1000–2000 filiform hair mechanoreceptors. In order to determine the extent of identifiability of individual hair receptors, the structural characteristics of ten putative identified hairs were measured in 21–25 different animals. For these ten hairs, the sets of preferred directions and circumferential locations had standard deviations of 6.8° and 5.9°, respectively. There was no significant inter-animal covariance between a hair's preferred direction and its circumferential location. The preferred directions of 246 different identified hairs were then measured from 16 animals in order to characterize the distribution of preferred directions of hairs on a single typical cercus. These data were transformed from the frame of reference of the cercus into that of the cricket, generating an estimate of the representation of air-current stimulus direction provided by the entire ensemble of filiform hairs on both cerci. The distribution of hair directional sensitivities was continuous but extremely non-uniform, and more complex than previous studies had suggested.Abbreviations MT medial-transverse - LT lateral-transverse - AL anterior-longitudinal - PL posterior-longitudinal - MAO medial-anterior-oblique - MPO medial-posterior-oblique - LAO lateral-anterior-oblique - LPO lateral-posterior-oblique - T transverse - L longitudinal - O oblique - CNS central nervous system  相似文献

We attempted to reproduce modular structures for direction selectivity characteristic of the primate middle temporal area (MT) based on our thermodynamic model for the activity-dependent self-organization of neural networks. We assumed that excitatory afferent input to MT neurons arises from V1 and/or V2 neurons which are selective to both orientation of a visual stimulus and direction of its motion, and that such input is modifiable and becomes selectively connected through the process of self-organization. By contrast, local circuit connections within MT are unmodifiable and remain nonselectively connected (isotropic). The present simulations reproduced characteristic patterns of organization in the cortex of MT in that: (1) preferred directions of the afferent input gradually shifted, except for singularity lines where direction abruptly changed by 180°; (2) model MT neurons located between the singularity lines responded to unidirectionally moving stimuli, closely reflecting preferred direction of the afferent input; (3) neurons responding to stimuli moving in two opposite directions were located along the singularity lines; and (4) neurons responding to stimuli moving in any direction were clustered at the ends of the singularity lines. When the strength of the lateral inhibition was decreased, direction selectivity of MT neurons was reduced. Therefore, the lateral inhibition, even if isotropic, strengthens the direction selectivity of MT neurons. Expression of singularities changed depending on a parameter that represents the relative dominance of the direction selectivity to the orientation selectivity of the afferent input. When the direction selectivity was predominant, singularity points were formed, while when the orientation selectivity prevailed, the MT was covered by two-dimensional singularity networks. Line singularities similar to those experimentally observed were reproduced when these two types of selectivity were in balance. Although magnetic compass orientation has been reported in a number of invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, including about a dozen migratory bird species, magnetic orientation capabilities in animals remain somewhat controversial. We have hand-raised a large number of Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) to study the ontogeny of orientation behavior. Young birds with a variety of early experience with visual and magnetic orientation cues have been tested for magnetic orientation during their first autumn migration. Here we present data from 80 hand-raised sparrows, each tested several times in both normal and shifted magnetic fields. Birds reared indoors with no experience with visual orientation cues showed axial north-south orientation that shifted by almost exactly the magnitude of 90° clockwise and counterclockwise shifts in the direction of magnetic north. Other groups of birds with varying early experience with visual orientation cues showed different preferred orientation directions, but all groups shifted orientation direction in response to shifts in the magnetic field. The data thus demonstrate a robust magnetic orientation ability in this species.  相似文献

The functional properties of the three horizontal cells (north horizontal cell, HSN; equatorial horizontal cell, HSE; south horizontal cell, HSS) in the lobula plate of the blowflyCalliphora erythrocephala were investigated electrophysiologically. 1. The receptive fields of the HSN, HSE, and HSS cover the dorsal, equatorial and ventral part of the ipsilateral visual field, respectively. In all three cells, the sensitivity to visual stimulation is highest in the frontal visual field and decreases laterally. The receptive fields and spatial sensitivity distributions of the horizontal cells are directly determined by the position and extension of their dendritic fields in the lobula plate and the dendritic density distributions within these fields. 2. The horizontal cells respond mainly to progressive (front to back) motion and are inhibited by motion in the reverse direction, the preferred and null direction being antiparallel. The amplitudes of motion induced excitatory and inhibitory responses decline like a cosine function with increasing deviation of the direction of motion from the preferred direction. Stimulation with motion in directions perpendicular to the preferred direction is ineffective. 3. The preferred directions of the horizontal cells show characteristic gradual orientation changes in different parts of the receptive fields: they are horizontally oriented only in the equatorial region and increasingly tilted vertically towards the dorsofrontal and ventrofrontal margins of the visual field. These orientation changes can be correlated with equivalent changes in the local orientation of the lattice of ommatidial axes in the pertinent compound eye. 4. The response amplitudes of the horizontal cells under stimulation with a moving periodic grating depend strongly on the contrast frequency of the stimulus. Maximal responses were found at contrast frequencies of 2–5 Hz. 5. The spatial integration properties of the horizontal cells (studied in the HSE) are highly nonlinear. Under stimulation with extended moving patterns, their response amplitudes are nearly independent of the size of the stimuli. It is demonstrated that this response behaviour does not result from postsynaptic saturation in the dendrites of the cells. The results indicate that the horizontal system is essentially involved in the neural control of optomotor torque responses performed by the fly in order to minimize unvoluntary deviations from a straight flight course.  相似文献

The first-instar cockroach, Periplaneta americana, detects air movements using four filiform hair sensilla, which make synaptic connections to seven pairs of giant interneurons (GIs) in the terminal abdominal ganglion. The directional sensitivities of some of the GIs, predicted from their patterns of monosynaptic inputs, may not be the same as in the second instar or adult. Intracellular recordings were made to determine the contribution of polysynaptic inputs to the receptive fields of first-instar GIs. The ventral GI1, and the dorsal GI5, GI6, and GI7 were all found to have indirect synaptic inputs from filiform afferents. The indirect inputs were excitatory to GI1, GI5, and GI7, and inhibitory to GI6 and GI7. The indirect excitatory input to GI1 was predicted to alter qualitatively its receptive field, allowing it to respond to wind from the side of the animal, as in the adult. Inhibition was predicted to sharpen the receptive fields of GI6 and GI7. The inhibitory postsynaptic potentials reversed 6–8 mV below resting potential and were blocked by picrotoxin, indicating that they are GABAergic. Indirect excitation also altered the predicted receptive field of GI7, one of the inputs being an unusual “off-response” to movement of a filiform hair in its inhibitory direction. 1. Young migratory birds enter the world with two representations of the migratory direction, one coded with respect to the magnetic field, the other with respect to celestial rotation. The preferred magnetic direction of migratory orientation is malleable early in life: it may be calibrated by celestial rotation, observed either in daytime or at night.
  2. Previous experiments showed that early experience with skylight polarization was necessary for calilbration to occur in daytime. In this study, we performed a direct manipulation of patterns of polarized skylight at dawn and dusk.
  3. Hand-raised Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) were allowed to observe the clear sky for 1 h prior to local sunrise and for one h following local sunset. They never saw the Sun nor stars. The birds observed the sky through bands of polarizing material (HNP'B) aligned with the e-vector axis in one of three orientations with respect of the azimuth of sunrise and sunset: group 1) 90°; group 2) 45° CW; group 3) 45° CCW.
  4. Tested indoors in covered cages in both shifted and unshifted magnetic fields, the autumn migratory orientation of the three groups differed significantly. Group 1 oriented magnetic N-S, group 2 oriented magnetic NW-SE, and group 3 oriented magnetic NNE-SSW. These observed orientation directions are very close to those predicted by the manipulations of polarized skylight.
  5. These results indicated that a fairly simplified, static polarized light pattern viewed a limited number of times only in dawn and dusk snapshots is sufficient to produce calibration of the preferred magnetic migratory orientation direction.

Summary Directionality and intensity dependence of antennal sweeps elicited by water jet stimulation of the tailfan in tethered, reversibly blinded adult and juvenile crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) were analyzed.Resting crayfish keep their antennae at about 50° symmetrically to the longitudinal body axis (Figs. 2 bottom, and 3).In adults, tailfan stimulation elicits synchronous backward sweeps of both antennae, which increase for more caudal stimulus directions (Figs. 2–4 and 5A). Directions differing by 30°–60° are significantly distinguished (Fig. 4). The mean sweep of the ipsilateral antenna significantly overrides that of the contralateral antenna for rostrolateral stimulation at 40–200 mm/s stimulus velocity and lateral to caudolateral stimulation at 40 mm/s and thus lateralization of the stimulus is revealed (Figs. 2 top, 4 and 5A). Mean antennal sweeps at a given stimulus direction and distance increase with increasing stimulus velocity (40–250 mm/s, Fig. 5A).In juveniles, the directional dependence of antennal sweeps is reduced compared to that of adults, while a similar intensity dependence is found (Fig. 5B).The pronounced directionality of the antennal response in adult crayfish vanishes and response latencies increase after reversibly covering the tailfan with a small bag or the telson with waterproof paste (Figs. 6 and 7). Thus, tailfan and especially telson mechanoreceptors play an important role in the localization of water movements elicited by predators or prey behind the crayfish.  相似文献

This paper reviews and discusses several investigations of the peripheral neural code for the directional axis of acoustical particle motion in the saccule of two fishes: goldfish (Carassius auratus) and toadfish (Opsanus tau). Most saccular afferents are directional in the manner of hair cells, having a cosine-shaped directional response pattern. The saccular sensory epithelia are orientated almost vertically in a parasagittal plane. In the horizontal plane, these epithelia are orientated obliquely with respect to the midline. Hair-cell stereocilia project perpendicularly. Thus, directional response patterns of saccular afferents tend to be orientated in azimuth parallel to the orientation of the epithelia in the head. The oblique angle of the toadfish saccule is greater than that of the goldfish, and the range of best directions in the horizontal plane for each species reflects those differing orientations. The azimuth of acoustical particle motion could be computed by comparing the relative activation of the two saccules, as is the case for the ears of most terrestrial vertebrates. The spatial patterns of saccular hair-cell orientation of most fishes thus appear to have little function in azimuthal source location, but for toadfish are probably most important for determining the elevation of monopole sources.  相似文献

Earlier experimental studies have demonstrated the ability of day-migrating birds to perform migration under overcast skies, thereby indicating use of cues other than solar. The orientation behaviour of the chaffinch, a diurnal migrant, was investigated in orientation cage experiments during the autumn migration period. The aim of our experiments was to examine the relationship between different orientation cues and the influence of body condition on directional choices. We obtained the following results: 1. Chaffinches displayed a bimodal distribution of headings along a SW-NE axis when tested in the local geomagnetic field (controls); 2. When the geomagnetic field was experimentally deflected 90° counterclockwise, the chaffinches responded by changing their preferred axial orientation to SE-NW; and 3. The predictive power of stored fat reserves became evident when both the control and experimental samples were subdivided into fat and lean individuals. The majority of fat controls orientated towards a seasonally appropriate SW direction, whereas lean controls chose mean directions towards the NE. Experimentals followed the same pattern, but with the expected deflection, i.e. fat birds selected SE headings and lean individuals chose a NW mean direction.  相似文献

Bees were trained to discriminate between two patterns, one of which was associated with a reward, in a Y-choice apparatus with the targets presented vertically at a distance at an angular subtense of 50°. Previous work with this apparatus has found discrimination between two patterns of coloured gratings or radial sectors that are fixed in different orientations during the training. When there was contrast to the blue receptors alone, gratings of period 6° were resolved, and 4° when there was contrast to the green receptors. In the present work, bees discriminate between a pattern containing tangentially arranged edges and one containing radially arranged edges, both with no average edge orientation. The targets were rotated every 5 min to make the locations of areas useless as cues. The edges remained consistently radial or tangential and were therefore the only cues. Tests with patterns of selected colours and various levels of grey show that for each colour there is a level of grey at which discrimination fails. Discrimination is therefore colour-blind. The same patterns were made with combinations of coloured papers that give no contrast to the green receptors or alternatively to the blue receptors. The bees discriminate only if the edges between colours present a contrast to the green receptors. The system that discriminates generalized radial and tangential cues is therefore colour blind because the inputs are restricted to the green receptors, not because receptor outputs are added together. The same result was obtained with a very coarse pattern of period 20°. Accepted: 10 January 1999  相似文献

Recordings were made from the nerve innervating the stretch receptors of the abdominal muscle receptor organs and slow extensor muscles of tethered crayfish, Cherax destructor, during so-called non-giant swimming. The stretch receptors were active during the flexor phase of swimming but the duration and pattern of activity varied from cycle to cycle. Their pattern of firing was modified by the activity of the large accessory neurons which make direct inhibitory synapses upon them. Neither the stretch receptors nor the accessory neurons were active during the extensor phase of the cycle. The timing and extent of tailfan movements during the period of stretch receptor activity were measured from video records before and after the stretch receptor nerves were cut in the second to fifth segments. The promotion of the tailfan during flexion was significantly delayed and the minimum angle to which the uropods were remoted at the end of flexion significantly larger in denervated animals. We propose that afferent information from the stretch receptors coordinates the timing and extent of tailfan movements according to variations in the positioning and movement of the abdominal segments such that the hydrodynamic efficiency of the tailfan is enhanced on a cycle by cycle basis during non-giant swimming.Abbreviations A# abdominal segment number - Acc accessory neuron - LUU large unidentified unit - MRO muscle receptor organ - NGS non-giant swimming - SEMN slow extensor motor neuron - SR stretch receptor neuron  相似文献

The response of individual Cryptomonas cells to continuous lightwas recorded using infrared video-micrography. Swimming directionsand temporal shifts in swimming direction of each cell weremeasured. White light of 0.1–1 W m–2 elicited apositive phototactic orientation, but did not induce any photophobicresponse. Light of 100 W m–2 induced a photophobic responseat the onset of actinic irradiation, but did not induce positivephototactic orientation. No correlation between positive phototacticorientation and photophobic response was found in this species. The direction toward the light source was defined as 0°,and the direction away from the source as 180°. Within 2s after the onset of lateral monochromatic light of 570 nm at0.1 W m–2, cells which were swimming in a direction ofless than 120° predominantly shifted their course towardthe light source. Cells swimming in directions of larger than120° shifted their course as randomly as those in the dark. Thus, for phototactic orientation, the cells must perceive thelight from their anterior side. A crucial insight into handwriting dynamics is embodied in the idea that stable, robust handwriting movements correspond to attractors of an oscillatory dynamical system. We present a phase dynamic model of visuomotor performance involved in copying simple oriented lines. Our studies on human performance in copying oriented lines revealed a systematic error pattern in orientation of drawn lines, i.e., lines at certain orientation are drawn more accurately than at other values. Furthermore, human subjects exhibit “flips” in direction at certain characteristic orientations. It is argued that this flipping behavior has its roots in the fact that copying process is inherently ambiguous—a line of given orientation may be drawn in two different (mutually opposite) directions producing the same end result. The systematic error patterns seen in human copying performance is probably a result of the attempt of our visuomotor system to cope with this ambiguity and still be able to produce accurate copying movements. The proposed nonlinear phase-dynamic model explains the experimentally observed copying error pattern and also the flipping behavior with remarkable accuracy.  相似文献

The dynamic ranges and stimulus-response properties of a large sample of cereal filiform receptors in Acheta domesticus were investigated electrophysiologically. The relation between receptor response and stimulus velocity was a sigmoid function, the log-linear portion of which spanned 1–1.5 log units of peak air-current velocity. Different receptors responded over different but overlapping velocity ranges, such that the system velocity sensitivity range spanned at least 2.5 log units. Plots of receptor response amplitude vs. stimulus direction were sinusoidal, with a period of 360°. Long-hair receptors responded in phase with air-current velocity, and intermediate-hair receptors responded in phase with air-current acceleration. These results extend those of Shimozawa and Kanou (1984a) and Kämper and Kleindienst (1990), in which the dynamics of receptor responses were shown to depend on hair length. When individual hairs were directly mechanically deflected, their receptors responded in phase with the first derivative of hair deflection. The signal transform between the air-current stimulus and the receptor response is comprised of two processes, one biomechanical/aerodynamic and one membrane biophysical. The results of this study suggest that the parametric sensitivities of receptors are primarily determined by hair biomechanical/aerodynamic properties.Abbreviation IR infrared  相似文献

Crickets and other orthopteran insects sense air currents with a pair of abdominal appendages resembling antennae, called cerci. Each cercus in the common house cricket Acheta domesticus is covered with between 500 to 750 filiform mechanosensory hairs. The distribution of the hairs on the cerci, as well as the global patterns of their movement axes, are very stereotypical across different animals in this species, and the development of this system has been studied extensively. Although hypotheses regarding the mechanisms underlying pattern development of the hair array have been proposed in previous studies, no quantitative modeling studies have been published that test these hypotheses. We demonstrate that several aspects of the global pattern of mechanosensory hairs can be predicted with considerable accuracy using a simple model based on two independent morphogen systems. One system constrains inter-hair spacing, and the second system determines the directional movement axes of the hairs.  相似文献

Visual discrimination of black bars by honeybees was studied in a Y-choice apparatus with fixed vertical patterns at constant range. The problem is to discover how bees remember different degrees of complexity of the orientation cue. Previous conclusions with parallel gratings and single bars disagree. With broad bars versus orthogonal bars, the bees learn the orientation cue if the bars are centred at the same place, but they learn the position cue in the vertical direction when the bars are at different places on the two targets. With several bars on each target, the bees learn their orientation and positions. As fixed patterns increase in complexity, the bees follow a simple rule, to look only at the range of places where the cues were displayed. The frame of reference is disrupted when a black spot is added to the training pattern. There is abundant evidence that the bees do not re-assemble the pattern or learn shapes. The filters that detect the position and orientation cues are coarsely tuned, so that they respond in a graded way, but the memory of the range of directions of the cue, as seen from the point of choice, is more exact.  相似文献

Numerous insect species undertake regular seasonal migrations in order to exploit temporary breeding habitats [1]. These migrations are often achieved by high-altitude windborne movement at night [2-6], facilitating rapid long-distance transport, but seemingly at the cost of frequent displacement in highly disadvantageous directions (the so-called "pied piper" phenomenon [7]). This has lead to uncertainty about the mechanisms migrant insects use to control their migratory directions [8, 9]. Here we show that, far from being at the mercy of the wind, nocturnal moths have unexpectedly complex behavioral mechanisms that guide their migratory flight paths in seasonally-favorable directions. Using entomological radar, we demonstrate that free-flying individuals of the migratory noctuid moth Autographa gamma actively select fast, high-altitude airstreams moving in a direction that is highly beneficial for their autumn migration. They also exhibit common orientation close to the downwind direction, thus maximizing the rectilinear distance traveled. Most unexpectedly, we find that when winds are not closely aligned with the moth's preferred heading (toward the SSW), they compensate for cross-wind drift, thus increasing the probability of reaching their overwintering range. We conclude that nocturnally migrating moths use a compass and an inherited preferred direction to optimize their migratory track.  相似文献

We recorded the observed and actual swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon and sea trout post-smolts in a Norwegian fjord system, and initiated studies on the orientation mechanisms of the post-smolts. We tracked Atlantic salmon and sea trout with acoustic transmitters for up to 14 h after release. The actual swimming speed and direction of a fish relative to the ground is the vector sum of the observed movements of the fish and the movements of the water. We determined actual swimming speeds and directions of the post-smolts, which reflect their real swimming capacities and orientation, by corrections for the speed and direction of the water current. The post-smolts were actively swimming. The observed direction of movement was dependent on the actual movement of the fish and not the water current. Water currents were not systematically used as an orientation cue either in Atlantic salmon or sea trout, as the actual movements were random compared to the direction of the water current. The actual movement of sea trout were in all compass directions, with no systematic pattern. The Atlantic salmon also moved in all compass directions, but with the lowest frequency of actual movement towards the fjord.  相似文献

Background

Crickets and other orthopteran insects sense air currents with a pair of abdominal appendages resembling antennae, called cerci. Each cercus in the common house cricket Acheta domesticus is approximately 1 cm long, and is covered with 500 to 750 filiform mechanosensory hairs. The distribution of the hairs on the cerci, as well as the global patterns of their movement vectors, have been characterized semi-quantitatively in studies over the last 40 years, and have been shown to be very stereotypical across different animals in this species. Although the cercal sensory system has been the focus of many studies in the areas of neuroethology, development, biomechanics, sensory function and neural coding, there has not yet been a quantitative study of the functional morphology of the receptor array of this important model system.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We present a quantitative characterization of the structural characteristics and functional morphology of the cercal filiform hair array. We demonstrate that the excitatory direction along each hair''s movement plane can be identified by features of its socket that are visible at the light-microscopic level, and that the length of the hair associated with each socket can also be estimated accurately from a structural parameter of the socket. We characterize the length and directionality of all hairs on the basal half of a sample of three cerci, and present statistical analyses of the distributions.

Conclusions/Significance

The inter-animal variation of several global organizational features is low, consistent with constraints imposed by functional effectiveness and/or developmental processes. Contrary to previous reports, however, we show that the filiform hairs are not re-identifiable in the strict sense.  相似文献
