Population growth and life table demography of the predatory rotifer A. girodi using spineless Brachionus calyciflorus and spined Brachionus havanaensis as prey at densities of 1, 2, 4 and 8 ind. ml–1 at 25°C were studied. Regardless of the prey species, the population of A. girodi increased with increasing availability of Brachionus in the medium. At any given prey density, A. girodi fed B. calyciflorus showed consistently better growth than when fed B. havanaensis. The maximum population densities of A. girodi varied from 0.28 to 1.8 ind. ml–1 depending on the prey species and the density. The rate of population increase observed in population growth studies varied from 0.17 to 0.43 day–1 when fed B. calyciflorus and 0.09 to 0.27 day–1 when fed B. havanaensis. Male population of A. girodi was closely related to female density. The lowest average lifespan was observed for A. girodi when fed B. havanaensis at 1 ind. ml–1, while the converse was the case when fed B. calyciflorus at comparable prey concentration. Net reproductive rates varied from 16 to 26 offspring female–1 lifespan–1 depending on the prey species and concentration. Generation time of A. girodi decreased with increasing food concentrations for both the prey species. The rates of population increase obtained from life table demography were lower for A. girodi when fed B. havanaensis than when fed B. calyciflorus.  相似文献

Algal food density is known to influence life history variables of cladoceran species. It is not, however, well established whether both littoral and planktonic cladocerans show similar trends when exposed to increasing food concentrations. In the present work, we studied the life table demography of four cladoceran species (Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Moina macrocopa, Pleuroxus aduncus and Simocephalus vetulus) in relation to three algal food concentrations (low: 0.5 × 106, medium: 1.5 × 106 and high: 4.5 × 106 cells ml–1 of Chlorella vulgaris) (in terms of carbon content, these were equivalent to 0.15, 0.45 and 1.35 g ml–1, respectively) at 25 °C. In general, for all the tested cladoceran species, values of average lifespan, gross reproductive rate, net reproductive rate, generation time and the rate of population growth were higher at lower food concentrations. Furthermore, high food concentration resulted in a negative population growth rate (mean ± standard error: –0.091 ± 0.026) for P. aduncus. The highest population growth rate (0.602 ± 0.014) was recorded for M. macrocopa at low food density. S. vetulus had the longest average lifespan (40 ± 1 d) while M. macrocopa had the lowest (5 ± 1 d). C. cornuta showed better performance at medium food concentration. We conclude that among the algal concentrations used here, 0.5 × 106 – 1.5 × 106 was beneficial not only to the planktonic species but also to the littoral P. aduncus and S. vetulus while 4.5 × 106 cells ml–1 was unsuitable for all the cladocerans tested.  相似文献

The effect of sublethal levels of methylparathion (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 mg l–1) on the freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, during their entire life cycle was studied. Rotifers were fed on two species of unicellular algae: Nannochloris oculata and Chlorella pyrenoidosa; both algal concentrations were 5 × 105 cell ml–1.The parameters used to determine the toxicity of this compound were survival, fecundity, net reproductive rate (R)o, generation time (T), intrinsic rate of natural increase (r), reproductive value (V x/Vo) and life expectancy at hatching (eo). All the demographic parameters studied were affected by methyl-parathion exposure on rotifers fed on both species of algae, but the toxic effect was larger when animals were fed on Chlorella pyrenoidosa; in this case, animals showed a decreased in fertility and also a delayed first reproduction. Sublethal methylparathion levels produced a reduction in most of the parameters selected, especially after exposure to 7 mg l–1, where the animals died before reproducing.  相似文献

The effect of different cell densities of marine Chlorella sp. on the growth rate, doubling time and production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was investigated. A significant increase in rotifer production was achieved at a density of 50 × 106 Chlorella cells ml–1. We studied the patterns of population growth of 7 cladoceran species (Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia laevis, Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Moina macrocopa, Scapholeberis kingi and Simocephalus vetulus) using 6 algal densities, viz. 0.05×106, 0.1×106, 0.2×106, 0.4×106, 0.8×106 and 1.6×106 cells ml–1, of Chlorella vulgaris for 18 – 30 days. In terms of carbon content these algal concentrations corresponded to 0.29, 0.58, 1.16, 2.33, 4.65 and 9.31 g ml–1, respectively. Cladocerans in the tested range of algal levels responded similarly, in that increasing the food concentrations resulted in higher numerical abundance and population growth rates (r). The peak population densities were (mean±standard error) 71±5; 17.1±0.4, 3.6±0.3, 12.7±1.1, 18.2±2.7, 15.8±1.0 and 10.9±0.02 ind. ml–1, respectively for A. rectangula, C. dubia, D. laevis, D. brachyurum, M. macrocopa, S. kingi and S. vetulus. In general, the lowest r values were obtained for D. laevis (0.01±0.001) at 0.05×106 cells ml–1 food level while the highest was 0.283±0.004 for A. rectangula at 1.6×106 cells ml–1 of Chlorella. When the data of peak population density for each cladoceran species were plotted against the body length, we found an inverse relation, broadly curvilinear in shape. From regression equations between the food level and rate of population increase, we calculated the theoretical food quantity (the threshold level) required to maintain a zero population growth (r = 0) for each cladoceran species, which varied from 0.107 to 0.289 g ml–1 d–1 depending on the body size. When we plotted the cladoceran body size against the corresponding threshold food levels, we obtained a normal distribution curve. From this it became evident that for up to 1300 m body size, the threshold food level increased with increasing body size; however, beyond this, the threshold level decreased supporting earlier observations on rotifers and large cladocerans.  相似文献

A detailed study of the life history of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was done at 20 °C, 20 ppt salinity, and 90 mg C 1–1 food concentration. Rotifers were grown individually in culture plate wells (150 µl culture volume) and fed Isochrysis galbana Tahiti, Tetraselmis sp., Nannochloris atomus, or a l : 1 mixture (weight) of two of the algae. Observations were made every 2–8 hr and rotifers were sized and transferred to new food daily. A total of 19 different parameters were compared. Rotifers fed Isochrysis averaged 21 offspring per female, a 6.7 day reproductive period, a lifespan of 10.5 days and a mean length of 234 µm. After Isochrysis, the foods giving the highest growth, survival, and reproduction in decreasing order were Isochrysis + Nannochloris, Nannochloris, Isochrysis + Tetraselmis, Tetraselmis + Nannochloris, and Tetraselmis. Although the small volume culture system used in this study seems appropriate for studying life history of B. plicatilis, the results cannot always be directly applied to larger cultures.  相似文献

Lifetable demography and reproductive traits of a Kenyan strain of the rotifer Brachionus angularis were investigated using individual and small batch culture approaches. The rotifer was identified morphologically before conducting studies at 20, 25 and 30 °C, using Chlorella vulgaris at 2.5 × 105 to 2.5 × 107 cells ml–1. The rotifers were highly fecund, producing 2.11 ± 0.07 offspring female–1 day–1 and reproductive, producing 8.43 ± 0.24 offspring female–1 at 25 °C with 2.5 × 106 algal cells ml–1. The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (0.74 ± 0.02 d–1), specific population growth rate (0.49 ± 0.01), longest life expectancy at hatching (12.41 ± 0.28 d) and shortest generation time (2.87 ± 0.03 d) also occurred at 25 °C with 2.5 × 106 algal cells ml–1. The duration of hatching to first spawning was shortest (2.86 ± 0.21 h) at 30 °C with 2.5 × 107 algal cells ml–1 and longest (8.83 ± 0.39 h) at 20 °C with 2.5 × 105 algal cells ml–1. The highest population density (255.7 ± 12.6 ind. ml–1) was realised at 25 °C with 2.5 × 106 cells ml–1 on Day 8, whereas the lowest population density (122.0 ± 3.6 ind. ml–1) was realised at 20 °C with 2.5 × 105 cells ml–1 on Day 8. The lorica length and width of the Kenyan strain of B. angularis are 85.6 ± 3.1 µm and 75.4 ± 3.6 µm, respectively. The rotifer optimally reproduces at 25 °C when fed with 2.5 × 106 algal cells ml–1.  相似文献

The effects of sublethal levels of endosulfan (0, 1, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.3 mg 1–1) on the demography of the rotifer Brachionus calyciorus were studied. Life expectancy at birth (e o), net reproductive rate (Ro), generation time (T) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were significant differentes between blank controls and controls with acetone. The effective endosulfan concentration at which a given parameter value was reduced to 50% of the controls (EC50) was calculated for life expectancy.  相似文献

由于工业活动的影响,墨西哥水体环境中的重金属浓度在上升.浮游动物,尤其是轮虫类,由于对环境变化十分敏感而且是淡水中的常见组成部分,因此被广泛用于生态毒理试验以确定水质标准.在不同的胁迫途径下(如通过培养基或食料),重金属的毒性是不同的.在本研究中,通过在轮虫Brachionus rubens的培养基和食料中添加重金属这两种途径,我们评估了镉和铅的效应.对于这两种重金属,均采用将轮虫置于含0.5×106个/ml绿藻的培养基中或每天喂食经5倍于LC50值的金属处理(1,2和4h)的绿藻.对于在培养基中添加镉,使用了三个毒性水平(0.1,0.2和0.4 mg/L),铅的浓度分别为0.005,0.010 和0.015 mg/L.基于LC50的数据,B.rubens对铅的敏感性要比镉高24倍.镉浓度为0.4 mg/L时,培养基中加入镉造成B.rubens的生长趋缓.而喂食经不同时间处理的绿藻后,轮虫的密度随着食料在重金属中处理时间的延长而减小.培养基中或食料中添加铅时,轮虫种群生长的的趋势与在镉处理下的情况类似.随着培养基中重金属浓度的增加,每天种群增长率(r值)会减小.在培养基和食料处理两种不同途径下,r值会在0.33(对照)到0.02 d-1(经重金属处理)间变化[动物学报 51(1)46-52,2005].  相似文献

Autotrophically grown cells of Chlorella vulgaris show a strong increase in the uptake rates for hexoses and for seven amino acids when incubated in the presence of hexoses. This increase is due to de-novo synthesis of three transport proteins: one forhexoses and two for amino acids. Mutants deficient in hexose transport were obtained after treatment of wild-type cells with acridine orange, followed by a selection procedure using the toxic hexose analogue, 2-deoxy-D-glucose. Moreover, the two amino-acid-transport systems could not be induced in these mutants by hexoses. The capacity to phosphorylate hexoses was identical in mutants and in the wild-type strain. The loss of transport activities can be correlated with the loss of certain radiolabeled protein bands on fluorograms of sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gels. These proteins are assumed to be responsible for the different transport systems in the wild-type strain. The results indicate that the two rotifer species Brachionus angularis and Keratella cochlearis have different life history strategies. Brachionus angularis appeared to be an r-strategist, showing higher reproductive, mortality and population growth rates than K. cochlearis. Additional evidence is offered suggesting that K. cochlearis is a K-strategist. Although K. cochlearis had a lower growth rate than B. angularis, this was compensated by a lower mortality rate, especially in pre-reproductive individuals. In addition, K. cochlearis allocated energy to reproduction more efficiently than B. angularis.  相似文献

The combined effects of sublethal levels of DDT (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 µg·l–1) and food (Chlorella at 1 and 3 × 106 cells ml–1) on the demography of the rotifer Brachionus patulus were studied. The average lifespan, life expectancy, net reproductive rate (Ro) and intrinsic rate of increase (r) were significantly greater at the higher food level, but declined with increasing DDT concentration. A significant DDT food interaction was manifested in the toxicity-mitigating action of the higher food density at higher DDT levels. The r values were negative at DDT levels 30 µg · l–1 and above, only when food density was low. The effective DDT concentration at which a given parameter value was reduced to 50% of that in the controls (EC50) was lower at lower food levels for both survivorship and reproduction, and lower for reproduction than for survivorship at either food level.  相似文献

以萼花臂尾轮虫(Brachionus calyciflorus)为受试动物,在1.0×106(较低)、2.0×106(中等)和4.0×106个细胞/mL (较高)的斜生栅藻(Scenedesmus obliquus)密度下,研究了不同浓度(0、200、400、600、800和1000 μg/L)的青霉素钠对轮虫各生命表统计学参数的影响。结果表明,与各藻密度下的对照组相比,当藻密度为2.0×106个细胞/mL时,200-1000 μg/L的青霉素钠处理组中轮虫的生命期望和世代时间分别延长了40.67%-70.67%和34.04%-50.23%(P<0.05),净生殖率和内禀增长率分别提高了204.35%-358.70%和36.26%-62.09%(P<0.05);藻密度的降低或升高均显著降低青霉素钠对轮虫存活、生殖和种群增长的促进幅度。1.0×106 个细胞/mL的斜生栅藻密度下,400 μg/L的青霉素钠处理组中轮虫的生命期望延长了21%(P<0.05),200-400μg/L的青霉素钠处理组中轮虫的世代时间延长了23.15%-33.13%(P<0.05),200-600和1000 μg/L的青霉素钠处理组中轮虫的净生殖率分别升高了40%-81.05%和41.05%(P<0.05);但4.0×106个细胞/mL的斜生栅藻密度下,各青霉素钠处理组中轮虫的所有生命表统计学参数均与对照组之间无显著性差异(P>0.05)。藻密度对轮虫的生命期望、净生殖率、内禀增长率和后代混交率均具有显著性影响(P<0.01),青霉素钠浓度对轮虫的世代时间、净生殖率和内禀增长率均具有显著性影响(P<0.05),藻密度和青霉素钠浓度的交互作用对轮虫的生命期望、净生殖率和内禀增长率也具有显著性影响(P<0.05)。在实验设置的青霉素钠浓度范围内,1.0×106个细胞/mL藻密度下轮虫的生命期望、世代时间和净生殖率与青霉素钠浓度之间均具有显著的剂量-效应关系(P<0.05);2.0×106个细胞/mL藻密度下,轮虫的生命期望、世代时间和内禀增长率与青霉素钠浓度之间均具有显著的剂量-效应关系(P<0.05)。本研究结果提示,环境相关浓度的青霉素钠不会对萼花臂尾轮虫的存活、生殖和种群增长产生显著性影响。  相似文献

Mass production of Brachionus plicatilis is usually accomplished by feeding so-called marine Chlorella (Nannochloropsis oculata) to the rotifers in marine fish hatcheries. If the marine Chlorella are in short supply, baker's yeast is usually used as a supplementary food. Recently, a condensed suspension of freshwater Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris, k-22) was commercially developed as another supplementary food. We have evaluated the dietary value of this freshwater Chlorella for growth of the rotifer by means of individual and batch cultures. Rotifers cultured with the freshwater Chlorella suspension under almost bacteria-free conditions, showed very suppressed growth. However if the Chlorella was supplemented with vitamin B12 by adding the vitamin solution into the suspension or by culturing the Chlorella in a medium containing vitamin B12, the nutritional value of freshwater Chlorella was greatly improved and almost at the same level as that of marine Chlorella. Condensed Chlorella may therefore be effective as a supplementary food if vitamin B12 is supplied.  相似文献

The growth yield of Chlorella vulgaris, Y kJ defined as g cells harvested per kJ of light energy absorbed by the cells, was assessed in a turbidostat culture by varying CO2 and O2 partial pressures ( and ). The value of Y kJ ranged from 3.1×10-3 to 5.0×10-3 g cells/kJ under light-limited conditions [ = 1.02.4%, = 065%; total pressure of gas (composed of CO2, O2 and N2)=1 atm]. In the light-limited environment, the algal specific growth rate deteriorated appreciably with the increase of . The deterioration accounts for the above range of Y kJ observed. The growth inhibition due to oxygen that was defined by subtracting from 1.0 the ratio of at given values of to that at = 0% extended from 0.07–0.30 (7–30%). However, glycolate could not be detected in the turbidostat culture. Isotopic experiments on the specific rate of 14CO2 uptake also revealed that the inhibition due to oxygen was from 22–38% when was varied from 0 to nearly 100%. Added vanadate ions inhibit purified nitrate reductase from Chlorella vulgaris by reacting with the enzyme in a manner rather similar to that of HCN. Thus vanadate, like HCN, forms an inactive complex with the reduced enzyme, and this inactivated enzyme can be reactivated rapidly by adding ferricyanide. The inactive vanadate enzyme complex is less stable than the inactive HCN complex, and the two can be distinguished by the fact that EDTA causes a partial reactivation of the former, but not of the latter. Vanadate can also cause an increase in HCN formation by intact Chlorella vulgaris cells. When these cells were incubated with vanadate, their nitrate reductase was reversibly inactivated, and all of this inactive enzyme could be shown to be the HCN complex rather than the vanadate complex. It has been shown previously that added ammonium salts cause a cessation of nitrate utilization in some Chlorella species. It has also been shown that Chlorella vulgaris can form an inactivated nitrate reductase which is an HCN complex. In the present study, a comparison has been made of the rate of nitrate utilization and the rate of nitrate reductase inactivation in Chlorella vulgaris in response to the addition of ammonium salts and light-dark changes. The rate of formation of HCN-inactivated enzyme is too slow to account for the prompt inhibition of nitrate utilization caused by adding ammonium. In contrast, when nitrate utilization is inhibited by addition of ferricyanide to intact cells, the HCN-inactivated enzyme is promptly formed in vivo, and might account for the inhibition of nitrate utilization, though inhibition of nitrate uptake can not be excluded.  相似文献

Glucose or non-metabolizable glucose analogues induce two systems of amino-acid transport in Chlorella vulgaris: an arginine-lysine system and a proline system. An additional third system of amino-acid transport is induced when glucose and an inorganic nitrogen source are present during glucose induction. The transport rates in glucose-NH 4 + -treated cells are 10 to 80 times higher than in untreated cells. The transport system shows a rather broad specificity and catalyses the transport of at least ten neutral and acidic amino acids. Three of these amino acids (l-alanine, l-serine and glycine) are transported by the proline system as well. The system is specific for l-amino acids and has a pH optimum between 5 and 6. Transport by this system seems to be active, since amino acids are accumulated inside the cells.  相似文献

We determined the effect of environmental stressors on the physiological condition of Brachionus rotundiformis. For two morphologically distinct B. rotundiformis strains: Hawaii (average lorica length = 222 m) and Langkawi strains (average lorica length 180 m), neonates hatched from resting eggs were exposed to different levels of unionized ammonia (0.7–9.8 mg l–1), viscosity (relative viscosity against natural seawater = 1–1.17) and Euplotes sp. (protozoan) contamination (1–40 cells ml–1). Increasing stress decreased fecundity and lifespan of both rotifer strains. Glucosidase and phospholipase activities were correlated with reproductive responses of both the strains exposed to unionized ammonia. When culture water viscosity was changed, the activity of esterase and phospholipase was correlated with reproductive responses of the Hawaiian strain, and glucosidase activity was correlated with those of Langkawi strain.With the protozoan contamination, esterase and glucosidase activities were correlated only with reproductive responses of the Hawaiian strain, while activity of all three enzymes was correlated to those of the Langkawi strain. Glucosidase activity proved to be a reliable indicator of stress for cultured B. rotundiformis.  相似文献
