In primates, the primary source of vitamin D is synthesis in the skin through sun exposure. Decreased sun exposure may lead to vitamin D deficiency and consequently other health issues. In laboratory, sanctuary, and zoo settings, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) may be housed indoors for prolonged periods of time without regular exposure to unfiltered sunlight. However, little research has examined the relationship between housing conditions and vitamin D serum levels in captive chimpanzees. In this study, we retrospectively compared serum levels of total vitamin D, calcium, ionic calcium, phosphorous, albumin, and alkaline phosphatase in 18 female and 12 male chimpanzees as they cycled between indoor-only and indoor-outdoor enclosures. Total vitamin D was significantly lower and alkaline phosphatase significantly higher when subjects were in the indoor-only enclosures compared with when they had regular access to outdoor enclosures. A vitamin D effect occurred only in young and prime-adult animals. Changes were significant in female but not in male chimpanzees. Calcium, ionic calcium, phosphorus, and albumin did not differ between indoor-only and indoor-outdoor enclosures. However, female chimpanzees exhibited significantly lower calcium and phosphorous levels while in the indoor-only enclosures. These results suggest that adult captive chimpanzees experience vitamin D deficiency when housed without regular access to unfiltered sunlight and that these effects may be more acute for adult female animals.  相似文献

The production of tumours in animals by the carcinogenic action of bracken fern ( Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) is described. One of the substances responsible has been identified as shikimic acid, and evidence is presented that it is a powerful mutagen. 水色是水环境质量评价中一个重要的综合性指标,不同的水色反映水质的营养状况;藻类群落是水体营养状况的生物表征,对水色具有重要影响作用。本文通过分析不同水色中的藻类优势种群及其作用,认为藻类优势种群是决定水色的主要生物因子;阐明了藻类与水色之间的相互关系以及施肥改变水色的内在机理,水体营养状况决定了水体藻类群落结构进而决定不同的水色;并结合实践对如何判断不同藻类种群引起的不同水色提出了看法,同时对改变和调控水色的方法和途径进行了论述,为相关生产和水环境管理提供理论依据和技术指导。  相似文献

氧化型胆固醇是胆固醇氧化衍生物,多达上百种。氧化型胆固醇存在于胆固醇膳食,高胆固醇血症的血浆和动脉组织、人动脉粥样硬化斑块和斑块内的泡沫细胞,以及氧化型低密度脂蛋白中。大量实验表明氧化型胆固醇对与动脉粥样硬化形成有关的细胞(如血管内皮细胞,平滑肌细胞以及单核/巨噬细胞等)具有毒性作用,提示,氧化型胆固醇在动脉粥样硬化的发生和演变中具有不可忽视的作用。  相似文献

骨质疏松症是一种全身性骨骼疾病,其特征为低骨量和骨组织微结构退化。自噬是一个动态的、高度规律的自我消化过程,负责细胞存活和氧化应激反应,可以控制人体老化和骨质疏松症。尽管目前自噬对骨质疏松症的调控机制并没有完全解释清楚,但是随着对自噬研究的不断深入,其与骨质疏松症之间可能的联系和相互影响机制不断被揭示。本文回顾了近年来自噬与骨质疏松症的相关研究文献,探寻自噬与骨质疏松症相关的科学依据,发现对自噬与骨质疏松症共同影响的机制包括衰老、基因调控等。同时,自噬对糖皮质激素诱导的骨质疏松发病及药物治疗均有一定的影响。为进一步利用与自噬相关的调控体系来防治骨质疏松症提供证据。  相似文献

Two forms of protochlorophyllide are found in dark-grown bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, var. Black Velentine) leaves, one (protochlorophyllide650) which is directly photoconvertible to chlorophyllide and another (protochlorophyllide632) which is not. Dark-grown leaves placed in solutions of δ-aminolevulinic acid accumulate protochlorophyllide632. Protochlorophyllide650 and protochlorophyllide632 can be partially separated on sucrose density gradients. A nitrogen atmosphere blocks chlorophyll synthesis in light or the regeneration of protochlorophyllide650 in the dark, even in the presence of excess δ-aminolevulinic acid, except when a stockpile of protochlorophyllide632 is present in the leaf. Under the latter conditions chlorophyll synthesis or protochlorophyllide650 regeneration is accompanied by a decrease in protochlorophyllide632. These experiments suggest that protochlorophyllide632 may be converted to protochlorophyllide650.  相似文献

The yield of chlorophyll-fluorescence (F), of oxygen evolution(PAS, photo-acoustic signal) and the light-induced changes ofplasmalemma potential (V) were measured in the presence of red(633 nm) background light with blue or far-red (720 nm) sinusoidallymodulated actinic light. The kinetic study based on curve-fittingof the measured frequency responses led to the following: theresponse of chlorophyll-fluorescence (F) to blue actinic lightcomprises four time-constants located at 2·7,50,400 and4000 s. Membrane potential (V) displays five time-constants:2· 50, 160±330, —1, 4000 s. These time-constantswere assigned to the reactions involved as follows: from thecomparison of the effects of blue and far-red actinic lightthe time-constants of 2·7 s and 400 s were related tothe plastoquinone pool and to the state-transition controller.The time-constant of 4000 s was not investigated. The complextime-constants of V are known to be related to the controllerof cytoplasmic pH from previous studies. The time-constant of50 s was common to V, F, and PAS. From the sign of the 50 scomponent in F and in PAS (qE-component), the following modelof the light action on membrane transport was developed: theuptake of protons into the inner space of the thylakoids causesan alkalinization of the cytoplasm which slows down the plasmalemmaH+-pump via a substrate effect. This article attempts to review some of the advances made during the past few years in our understanding of the nature of the barrier presented by the endothelial cell wall and how it may contribute to the regulation of exchange between blood and tissues. It has concentrated on a small number of experimental techniques which have yielded information on the correlation between structure and function of the endothelial cell wall and which have emphasized the potentially dynamic characteristics of the barrier. Whilst there now seems to be little dispute as to the location of the fluid conducting channels across the endothelial cell wall, within the clefts, fenestrae and in inflammation the open cell junctions, it has proved difficult to identify the molecular filter which limits macromolecular exchange across these pathways. In fenestrated endothelium it has been suggested that the filter resides at the fenestral diaphragms or in the underlying basement membrane, while in continuous endothelium there is strong support in the literature that the filter is located within the intercellular cleft, at regions of closely apposed cell membranes, or in the case of a vesicular pathway, at the necks or diaphragms of the vesicle openings. Alternatively, there is a considerable and increasing body of experimental evidence that macromolecular movement is retarded by the endothelial cell coat which lines the whole of the endothelial cell surface and covers the openings of interendothelial cell clefts, fenestral diaphragms and vesicle openings. It is believed to comprise glycoproteins secreted and regulated by the endothelial cells themselves and to have associated with it plasma proteins, particularly serum albumin. Expression of this glycocalyx and its modification have been demonstrated in vivo and in cultures of isolated endothelial cells, in vitro. Experiments using single microvessels in which a correlation between structure and function can be most readily made, offer further evidence that the clefts between endothelial cells are quantitively more than sufficient in extent to accommodate the fluid fluxes measured in even the most highly permeable vessels. They further demonstrate that the dramatic increases in fluid flux seen in inflammation result from a modulation of endothelial cell shape to form interendothelial cell gaps by activation of intracellular contractile mechanisms, mediated by changes in intracellular calcium. Increases in macromolecular leakage may only be seen when gap formation is accompanied by extensive modulation of the intercellular cement substance, or glycocalyx filling those gaps.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

近十多年来的研究表明,在神经退行性疾病的发生与发展中,脑内始终存在着以胶质细胞激活为主要特征的炎症反应。神经炎症是把双刃剑,一方面,它诱发或加重神经系统的退行性病变;另一方面,它在某些特定情况下有利于神经系统损伤的修复。激活的胶质细胞通过释放致炎细胞因子和活性氧自由基等分子介导神经炎症所致的神经元退行性病变,而由调节性T细胞产生的抗炎细胞因子及由神经元释放的抗炎神经肽能保护神经元抵抗神经炎症,从而减缓或减轻神经退行性疾病的进程。  相似文献
