Specimens of Cottus gobio and Noemacheilus barbatulus from the River Avon, Hampshire, were examined between July 1970 and July 1971. Both fish were found to act as hosts for Nicolla gallica (adult), Pomphorhynchus laevis (adult) and Triaenophorus nodulosus (plerocercoid). The incidence and intensity of infection were lower in N. barbatulus than in C. gobio , and this was related to differences in host diet. A small number of N. barbatulus were also found to harbour Proteocephalus torulosus . Seasonal cycles of incidence and intensity were evident in N. gallica , with a peak occurring in the winter. P. laevis and T. nodulosus showed no such cycles. Increasing host size was associated with a higher infection of both N. gallica and P. laevis , but not T. nodulosus . The diet of the host was considered to be important in influencing this increase. Differences in host reproductive condition affected the population levels of N. gallica only, where an increased parasite burden was evident in gravid female fish. This was considered to influence the observed increase in incidence and intensity of this parasite during the winter. None of the parasites showed any seasonal maturation cycles. There was no evidence of any interactions between the parasite populations. Host diet and the availability of infective larvae were considered to be the most important features influencing the number of parasites which became established, and the rate at which this occurred. Temperature probably acted indirectly on the establishment of N. gallica , by controlling the availability of the larval stages, and also, by influencing the host reproductive condition, on the length of time for which the parasite was retained by the host. 相似文献

The toxicity of zinc sulphate and cadmium sulphate to stone loach Noemacheilus barbatulus was examined in an attempt to explain the distribution of the species in two polluted streams. Stone loach in hard water were more sensitive than rainbow trout to zinc, but much more resistant to cadmium. Their disappearance from the Willow Brook, Northants, in 1971–72 could be accounted for by zinc toxicity. A behavioural change, the loss of the instinct to hide during daylight, occurred in subsequently lethal concentrations of cadmium. The accumulation of cadmium in several tissues was also determined. 相似文献

1. The chief objective was to determine the upper and lower thermal limits for feeding and survival in the stone loach, Noemacheilus barbatulus, using juveniles (total length 30–45 mm, live weight 0.25–0.80 g) from one population and adults (total length 77–100 mm, live weight 3.6–7.9 g) from three populations. 2. Fish were acclimatized to constant temperatures of 3, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 27°C; then the temperature was changed at a rate of 1°C/30min to determine the critical limits for feeding, survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature), or survival for 10 min or less (ultimate lethal temperature). The rate of 1°C/30min was the optimum value from preliminary experiments, using nine rates from 0.5°C/48h to 18°Ch?1. As values for adults were not significantly different between populations, they were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with 95% CL) for the thermal limits at each acclimation temperature. 3. Feeding limits increased with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values of 28.0 ± 0.15°C and 5.1 ± 0.55°C for adults, 25.0 ± 0.54°C and 6.1 ± 0.92°C for juveniles. Incipient lethal levels defined a tolerance zone within which stone loach survive for a considerable time; upper limits increased with acclimation temperature to reach a maximum plateau of 29.1 ± 0.18°C for adults and 29.0 ± 0.40°C for juveniles; lower limits also increased from near 0°C to 3.0 ± 0.40°C for adults and juveniles. Upper limits for the ultimate lethal level increased with acclimation temperature to a maximum plateau of 33.5°C for adults (95% CL ± 0.19) and juveniles (95% CL ± 0.40), whilst the lower limits increased from near 0°C to 2.5 ± 0.30°C. At acclimation temperatures below 20°C, upper incipient and ultimate lethal values were significantly lower for juveniles than those for adults. 4. The thermal tolerance of stone loach was higher than that of juvenile Atlantic salmon or brown trout, one or both of these species often being dominant in streams with stone loach. 相似文献

The mean haemoglobin concentration of Noemacheilus barbatulus was found to be significantly higher than that of Cobitis taenia. Under conditions of reduced oxygen saturation, both species achieved maximum rates of ventilation at 10% 02. An alteration in opercular beat pattern accounted for the increased ventilation rates between 20% and 30%. A slightly higher tolerance for lowered oxygen concentrations was demonstrated by Cobitis taenia with disorientation and aerial respiration occurring at lower oxygen tensions than in Noemacheilus barbatulus. 相似文献

Two species of coarse fish that are relatively resistant to cadmium poisoning were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of the metal in their aquarium water. Thus, roach were exposed to cadmium concentrations between 30 and 500 micrograms/l for periods of 14-70 days whereas stone loach were exposed to 1250 micrograms Cd/l for 21-77 days. Under all conditions of exposure, it was found upon analysis of the major organs of accumulation of cadmium in the two species that the toxic metal was sequestered by a single isoform of metallothionein. The amino acid compositions of roach and stone loach metallothionein were determined and found to be similar to those reported for other piscine metallothioneins. The two proteins were found to contain Cd:Zn:Cu in approximate ratios of 4:1:2 per mole of protein. The sequestration of Cd by metallothionein in the two resistant species of fish is contrasted with the situation observed previously in a cadmium-sensitive species, the rainbow trout. 相似文献

The feeding habits of the 0+ year class of two of the most common small fish species in the River Ouzel, Milton Keynes, stone loach, Noernacheilus bnrhafulus (L.), and bullhead, Coftus gobio L., are assessed throughout the first growing season and compared. 751 specimens of spined loach, Cobitis taenia (L.), were collected and studied over the period October 1972–October 1974. The majority of the males were found to die at
the end of the 2+ season and the majority of the females at the end of the 3+ season.
Back calculations for length at age were carried out from otolith measurements and found to correspond closely to actual measurements.
Males and females grew similarly up until the end of their 1+ year of life, with most rapid growth occurring in the first
year. Females continued to grow rapidly up to 2+, the rate then being reduced; the males showed an increasingly reduced rate
of growth after the 1+ year. Ford Walford plots gave L∞ results which corresponded closely in most cases with the largest
observed specimens.
Gonad development and maturation of males and females followed different patterns. Males matured during the 1 + year at a
length of approximately 40 mm from which point their dry gonad weight remained at a steady 0.02–0.03% of the body weight.
Females appeared to mature a year later and their ovary weight and oocyte diameter increased with fish age. A seasonal cycle
in gonad development was evident in females.
There was a greater proportion of females to males, especially in the older age group. Spawning time was estimated to be between

Opercular bones from 399 chub from the River Stour, Dorset were used for age and backcalculated growth measurements. Scales were only used to aid the interpretation of difficult operculars. Annuli were laid down through the period mid-April to mid-June. Growth in length was minimal between October and March. Growth rates were similar to those published for chub in other European waters, but the Stour chub were longer-lived and attained a greater ultimate size. Female chub grew faster than the males. Spawning occurred from late May into June and elaboration of the gonads took place between September and May. Immature chub had an annual cycle of condition; the 0 group having a maximum in August and older immature fish reaching their maximum in June. Both categories had a minimum condition in early spring. The cycle of gonad development affected the condition of mature fish. The numbers of eggs in chub of lengths 359–467 mm ranged from 27 000–65 000. Some females attained sexual maturity at age V or VI, but most by age VII. The majority of males matured at age V, though some at ages III or IV. Growth rates and year-class strengths varied from year to year but independently of one another. Thirty-one per cent of chub aged II and over belonged to the 1959 year class. Young chub ate insect larvae and small crustacea, but the occurrence of fish and macrophytes was greater in the diet of older fish. 相似文献

A quantitative histochemical study was carried out on axial musculature of Noemacheilus barbatulus L. On the basis of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and myofibrillar ATP-ase activity, 5 types of muscle fibers are described. When the SDH method was used, red, tonic, intermediate, and white muscle fibers were easily observed. However, histochemical reaction for myofibrillar ATP-ase activity, after alkaline preincubation (pH = 10.4), revealed another type of fiber zone laying between the intermediate and white muscle fiber regions and forming a transitional zone. Electron microscopic observation showed significant differences in sarcomere organization and thickness of myosin filaments of the various muscle fiber types. 相似文献

Five hundred and four stone loach 63–202 mm in total length, of I + to 8 + age groups, were sampled in two rivers of East Siberia from April to October 1989–90. This paper presents data on the seasonal dynamics of fecundity, ripening, fatness and feeding intensity. A second spawning from the end of August to October has been identified for the first time for this species. The absolute fecundity ranged from 1710 to 27600, and the relative fecundity varied from 216 to 833 eggs g−1 : (fish weight). Stone loach in the River Olkha grew faster than those in the River Goloustnaya and, according to this index, are closer to stone loach from streams of northern England. 相似文献

SUMMARY. The seasonal variation in population density of Gammarus pulex was studied in a Dorset chalk stream. The numbers increased markedly in June and July and reached a maximum of c. 10000m−2 in September whilst the most rapid decline in density occurred in October-November and reached a minimum of 820 m−2 in February. The animals occurred in greater densities in habitats containing Ranunculus or Callitriche than in those devoid of vegetation. The population structure was determined monthly and was split into juveniles (length <4mm), immature males, immature females, mature males and ovigerous females. The percentage of juveniles (39–76) was always the highest of any of the categories. Ovigerous females were found at all times of the year. The sex ratio varied with the time of year both for immatures and matures, although there was approximately a 1:1 ratio for the mature individuals. Seasonal variation in biomass showed a maximum of 7.l g dry wt m−2 in September and a minimum of 1.4 g dry wt m−2 in March. Production was calculated by two methods giving values of 12.9 g dry wt m−2 year−1 and 12.8 g dry wt m−2 year−1 . 相似文献

The length-weight relationship of a sample of 233 roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) can be described by the following equations: y =0·0356 x 3·405 and y =0·0215 ×3·606 for males and females respectively. In both equations y equals the body weight in grams and × is the standard length in centimetres. The average condition factor K was 2·01 with a range of 1·71 to 2·26. The roach's span of life was 13 years for both sexes. The growth increment is greater during the first year of life (about 56 mm), decreasing to approximately 17 mm at the end of the sixth year of life and then becoming constant at about 12 mm per year. Roach become sexually mature at age 1 + for males and one year later for females. The mean absolute fecundity was 9294 eggs; with a range from 920 to 32 810. The growth of the gonads is related to the age of the fish. Spawning occurs during the first half of April, at a mean water temperature of 10° C. 相似文献

1. The accumulation of cadmium in the liver, kidney and gills of rainbow trout and stone loach was measured during exposure of the fish to the metal at 3 smg/l in their aquarium water. The pattern of accumulation of the toxic metal in the individual organs was different between the two species.2. The tissue concentrations of metallothionein-specific mRNA and metallothionein protein were also determined in these organs from the same fish. In rainbow trout, the induction of metallothionein gene expression resulted in a gradual increase in metallothionein concentration in gill over the course of the experiment whereas increases in metallothionein in the liver and kidney were detected only at the later time points of analysis (beyond 19 weeks). By contrast, in the same tissues from stone loach, relatively minor changes were quantified in specific mRNA and metallothionein concentrations.3. Throughout the experimental period, tissue concentrations of zinc and copper were determined in the liver, kidney and gills of the rainbow trout and stone loach. Subtle decreases were observed in the zinc concentration of gills in rainbow trout and substantial increases were observed in the hepatic copper concentrations in both species at the later time points of analysis.4. The ability of cadmium to induce metallothionein gene expression and its subsequent ability to compete for the sequestration sites on the newly-synthesized protein is discussed with regard to the relative levels of cadmium, zinc and copper in the organs studied and differing regimes of cadmium administration. 相似文献

The effects of an increase in group size on the location of a concealed food resource by stone-loach were examined. Food was located more rapidly when group size was increased from one to five individuals. This was achieved by a reduction in the time taken to start searching for food, and by a reduction of travel time. We also found, at group sizes of two and five fish, consistent differences in individual foraging abilities, which were correlated with each fish's patch location performance when alone. 相似文献

1. Invertebrate drift is commonly investigated in streams, with the majority of studies focussed on temporal (typically diel) variation. In comparison, few studies have investigated spatial variation in drift and there is little consensus among them. We tested the hypothesis that spatial variation in invertebrate drift is as important as temporal variation. 2. The density of drifting invertebrates in a chalk stream was sampled using an array of nets arranged to determine vertical, lateral and longitudinal variation. Samples were collected at dawn, during the day, at dusk and by night, on four separate monthly occasions. Insecta and Crustacea were analysed separately to identify the effect of differing life history strategies. The density of drifting debris was also recorded, to act as a null model. 3. Time of day and vertical position together explained the majority of the variance in invertebrate drift (79% for Insecta and 97% for Crustacea), with drift densities higher at dusk and night, and nearer the stream bed. Independently, time of day (38%, Insecta; 52%, Crustacea) and vertical position (41%, Insecta; 45%, Crustacea) explained a similar amount of the observed variance. Month explained some of the variance in insect drift (9%) but none for Crustacea. 4. Variation in the density of drifting debris showed little in common with invertebrate drift. There was little variation associated with time of day and only 27% of the observed variation in debris could be explained by the factors investigated here, with month explaining the largest proportion (20%). We suggest the difference in drifting debris and invertebrates provides further evidence for a strong behavioural component in invertebrate drift. 5. Spatial variation in invertebrate drift can be of the same order of magnitude as the much‐described diel temporal variation. The extent of this spatial variation poses problems when attempting to quantify invertebrate drift and we recommend that spatial replication should be incorporated into drift studies. 相似文献

The age, growth and reproduction of Chondrostoma polylepis willkommi , an endemic cyprinid from the Iberian Peninsula, was studied for 2 years in a seasonal stream in the Guadalquivir River basin. Annual growth was low. Maximum ages observed were 5+ in males and 7+ in females. There was no significant difference in growth between sexes. Seasonal growth period started in May and continued for 2 to 6 months depending on age. The mean lengths of 1 + and 2+ age-groups decreased once the growth period had finished, probably related to reproductive stress and adverse ecological conditions, and this could explain the occurrence of Rosa Lee's phenomenon. Both sexes matured at the end of their second year of life (1+). There was a significant difference from 1: 1 in the overall sex ratio of 334 males to 464 females. Reproductive period started in March and lasted until May. Ch. p. willkommi was a multiple spawner that released two batches of eggs per female each year. The regression between fecundity ( F ) and fork length (l., mm) was: F =6.20 103 L.2.78 . In females from age 2 + onwards, relative annual investment in somatic growth and reproduction was equivalent, implying that the same energy was allocated to reproduction as to maintenance/growth. Compared with other Ch. polylepis populations, the life-history patterns of this population, located in a small and seasonal stream in a southern latitude, were characterized by a low annual growth, a trade-off between reproduction and growth/maintenance, early maturity, low number of age-groups and high fecundity from multiple spawnings. 相似文献

Scales and opercular bones from 632 roach from the River Stour were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. The scales had clearer inner annuli but operculars clearer outer annuli in fish more than nine years old. The annuli were laid in late May or early June at the beginning of the growth period. Growth was minimal between November and April. Roach from both rivers grow faster than those in most other European waters. Female roach grow faster than males; River Frome roach faster than those from the Stour. Spawning occurred in May and elaboration of gonads between September and May. Immature roach have an annual cycle in condition with a maximum in June and a minimum in early Spring. The condition of mature females is affected by the gonad cycle. The fecundity of Stour roach is represented by the formula: log egg number=4.43 log length (mm)—1.69. Approximately half of the Stour males attained sexual maturity at age III and most of the rest by age IV. Half of the females were mature at age IV and the remainder by age V. Both brood success and growth rate varied from year to year but independently of one another. Most Stour roach ate aquatic insect larvae and molluscs but algae were more frequent in the diet of larger fish. 相似文献

Opercular bones of 261 pike from the River Stour and 117 from the River Frome were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. The annuli were laid down during late April and early May and most growth occurred between May and September. Pike growth in the two rivers was comparable with the fastest growth in other waters, though Frome pike grew slightly faster than Stour pike. Spawning occurred from the end of March into May. Elaboration of the ovaries commenced in September and was virtually completed by February, whereas the testes reached their maximum weight in October and maintained it until spawning. Immature pike had an annual cycle of condition reaching a maximum in May and a minimum during the winter. The gonad cycle affected the condition of mature females which had their minimum condition in mid-summer. The fecundity of Stour pike is expressed by the formula: log10 egg number =3.56 log10 fish length (mm) – 5.40. Approximately 75% of all Stour pike were sexually mature by age II and these fish were, on average, larger than immature pike of the same age. The most numerous items in the diet of pike were small cyprinids, 30–80 mm fork length, although pike over 700 mm long ate larger fish. Few salmonids appeared in the diet of either Frome or Stour pike. The percentage of empty stomachs was highest in Stour samples taken during the summer, shorter digestion times and longer feeding periods in this period are suggested as reasons for the apparent anomaly. 相似文献

Previous work suggests that juvenile salmon recruitment in rain-fed rivers is negatively influenced by warm and wet winters and cool springs. We tested whether this is generally applicable to a southern England chalk stream characterized by comparatively stable discharges and temperatures. We found that warm spawning and cool emergence temperatures negatively influenced juvenile recruitment between 2015 and 2020. Together these findings suggest an ability to predict juvenile productivity from water temperature records around spawning and fry emergence, thereby allowing time for management interventions in years of unfavourable temperatures. 相似文献
