The influence of calcite precipitation on the phosphorus cycle in stratified hardwater lake was studied before and during experiments with a new restoration technique. Surveys of the chemical composition of water column and monitoring of settling particles of Lake Luzin (North–East) showed that calcite precipitation occurs each year over 2–3 periods during spring and summer. The change of the phosphorus content influenced the calcite precipitation intensity. The sedimentation fluxes of phorphorus and the calcite precipitation were closely associated. Based on the hypothesis that calcite precipitation acts as an improvement to the trophic state by enhancing the internal phosphorus sink, this new technology for lake restoration was developed. The hypolimnetic Ca(OH)2 addition during summer stratification in 1996–1997 induced the calcite precipitation in the deep water layer of Basin Carwitz of Lake Schmaler Luzin. The treatment also supported the natural calcite precipitation in the epilimnion. The annual total phosphorus content decreased from 0.46 tons in 1995 to 0.35 tons in 1997. The annual SRP content decreased from 0.02 tons in 1996 to 0.01 tons in 1997 after beginning the artificial calcite precipitation in 1996. The decrease of the annual Chl-a concentration in 1998 on 38% compared with that in 1996 pointed out the lake recovering. According to the one box model, the artificial calcite precipitation affected the P cycle in the lake by suppressing the P release from the sediments.  相似文献

Species of cyanobacteria in the genera Synechococcus and Synechocystis are known to be the catalysts of a phenomenon called "whitings", which is the formation and precipitation of fine-grained CaCO3 particles. Whitings occur when the cyanobacteria fix atmospheric CO2 through the formation of CaCO3 on their cell surfaces, which leads to precipitation to the ocean floor and subsequent entombment in mud. Whitings represent one potential mechanism for CO2 sequestration. Research was performed to determine the ability of various strains of Synechocystis and Synechococcus to calcify when grown in microcosms amended with 2.5 mM HCO(3-) and 3.4 mM Ca2+. Results indicated that although all strains tested have the ability to calcify, only two Synechococcus species, strains PCC 8806 and PCC 8807, were able to calcify to the extent that a CaCO3 precipitate was formed. Enumeration of the cyanobacterial cultures during testing indicated that cell density did not appear to have a direct effect on calcification. Factors that had the greatest effect on calcification were CO2 removal and subsequent generation of alkaline pH. Whereas cell density was similar for all strains tested, differences in maximum pH were demonstrated. As CO2 was removed, growth medium pH increased and soluble Ca2+ was removed from solution. The largest increases in growth medium pH occurred when CO2 levels dropped below 400 ppmv. Research presented demonstrates that, under the conditions tested, many species of cyanobacteria in the genera Synechocystis and Synechococcus are able to calcify but only two species of Synechococcus were able to calcify to an extent that led to the precipitation of calcium carbonate.  相似文献

Lacustrine carbonate chimneys are striking, metre‐scale constructions. If these were bioinfluenced constructions, they could be priority targets in the search for early and extraterrestrial microbial life. However, there are questions over whether such chimneys are built on a geobiological framework or are solely abiotic geomorphological features produced by mixing of lake and spring waters. Here, we use correlative microscopy to show that microbes were living around Pleistocene Mono Lake carbonate chimneys during their growth. A plausible interpretation, in line with some recent works by others on other lacustrine carbonates, is that benthic cyanobacteria and their associated extracellular organic material (EOM) formed tubular biofilms around rising sublacustrine spring vent waters, binding calcium ions and trapping and binding detrital silicate sediment. Decay of these biofilms would locally have increased calcium and carbonate ion activity, inducing calcite precipitation on and around the biofilms. Early manganese carbonate mineralisation was directly associated with cell walls, potentially related to microbial activity though the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated. Much of the calcite crystal growth was likely abiotic, and no strong evidence for either authigenic silicate growth or a clay mineral precursor framework was observed. Nevertheless, it seems likely that the biofilms provided initial sites for calcite nucleation and encouraged the primary organised crystal growth. We suggest that the nano‐, micro‐ and macroscale fabrics of these Pleistocene Mono Lake chimneys were affected by the presence of centimetre‐thick tubular and vertically stacked calcifying microbial mats. Such carbonate chimneys represent a promising macroscale target in the exploration for ancient or extraterrestrial life.  相似文献

Carbonate microbialites in lakes can serve as valuable indicators of past environments, so long as the biogenicity and depositional setting of the microbialite can be accurately determined. Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene frondose draping tufa deposits from Winnemucca Dry Lake (Nevada, USA), a subbasin of pluvial Lake Lahontan, were examined in outcrop, petrographically, and geochemically to determine whether microbially induced precipitation is a dominant control on deposition. These observations were compared to modern, actively accumulating microbialites from Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA) using similar methods. In addition, preserved microbial DNA was extracted from the Lahontan tufa and sequenced to provide a more complete picture of the microbial communities. Tufas are texturally and geochemically similar to modern thrombolitic microbialites from Fayetteville Green Lake, and the stable isotopic composition of organic C, N, inorganic C, and O supports deposition associated with a lacustrine microbial mat environment dominated by photosynthetic processes. DNA extraction and sequencing indicate that photosynthetic microbial builders were present during tufa deposition, primarily Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria with minor abundances of Cyanobacteria and Acidobacteria. Based on the sequencing results, the depositional environment of the tufas can be constrained to the photic zone of the lake, contrasting with some previous interpretations that put tufa formation in deeper waters. Additionally, the presence of a number of mesothermophilic phyla, including Deinococcus–Thermus, indicates that thermal groundwater may have played a role in tufa deposition at sites not previously associated with groundwater influx. The interpretation of frondose tufas as microbially influenced deposits provides new context to interpretations of lake level and past environments in the Lahontan lake basins.  相似文献

Synechococcus strain GL24 is a unicellular cyanobacterium that was isolated from Fayetteville Green Lake, New York, a meromictic lake which has high Ca2+ and SO42- concentrations. Epicellular mineralization of Synechococcus cells in the lake is the mechanism by which extensive calcitic bioherms (or microbial reefs) have been formed on the lake's shore and a marl sediment has been built on the lake bottom. Previous studies have shown that calcium carbonate (calcite) formation on the Synechococcus surface is dependent upon an alkaline pH, which is produced in the cellular microenvironment by the cells as their activity increases with seasonal warming of the lake water. At the circumneutral pH of bulk lake water, calcium sulfate (gypsum) is formed. In this study, we show that Synechococcus mediates a similar sulfate-to-carbonate transformation when Sr2+ is the major divalent cation present, forming celestite and strontianite. In experimental systems to which equimolar amounts of Ca2+ and Sr2+, Ca2+ or Sr2+ and Mg2+, or all three ions together were added to artificial lake water, Ca2+ and Sr2+ were incorporated equally into mineral formation to form CaSr(CO3)2. No Mg2+ -containing carbonates were formed when either or both of the other two ions were present. Mineral formation takes place on a hexagonally arranged proteinaceous template (an S-layer) which forms the outermost surface of the Synechococcus cell. Our results provide evidence that the S-layer exhibits selectivity with respect to the ions bound and subsequently incorporated into carbonate minerals and that celestite and strontianite, previously thought to be purely evaporitic minerals, can be biogenically formed.  相似文献

Resuspension in a shallow eutrophic lake   总被引:18,自引:7,他引:11
The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

Isotopic analyses on bulk carbonates are considered a useful tool for palaeoclimatic reconstruction assuming calcite precipitation occurring at oxygen isotope equilibrium with local water and detrital carbonate input being absent or insignificant. We present results from Lake Neuchâtel (western Switzerland) that demonstrate equilibrium precipitation of calcite, except during high productivity periods, and the presence of detrital and resuspended calcite. Mineralogy, geochemistry and stable isotope values of Lake Neuchâtel trap sediments and adjacent rivers suspension were studied. Mineralogy of suspended matter in the major inflowing rivers documents an important contribution of detrital carbonates, predominantly calcite with minor amounts of dolomite and ankerite. Using mineralogical data, the quantity of allochthonous calcite can be estimated by comparing the ratio ankerite + dolomite/calcite + ankerite + dolomite in the inflowing rivers and in the traps. Material taken from sediment traps shows an evolution from practically pure endogenic calcite in summer (10–20% detrital material) to higher percentages of detrital material in winter (up to 20–40%). Reflecting these mineralogical variations, δ13C and δ18O values of calcite from sediment traps are more negative in summer than in winter times. Since no significant variations in isotopic composition of lake water were detected over one year, factors controlling oxygen isotopic composition of calcite in sediment traps are the precipitation temperature, and the percentage of resuspended and detrital calcite. Samples taken close to the river inflow generally have higher δ values than the others, confirming detrital influence. SEM and isotopic studies on different size fractions (<2, 2–6, 6–20, 20–60, >60 μm) of winter and summer samples allowed the recognition of resuspension and to separate new endogenic calcite from detrital calcite. Fractions>60 and <2 μm have the highest percentage of detritus. Fractions 2–6 and 6–20 μm are typical for the new endogenic calcite in summer, as given by calculations assuming isotopic equilibrium with local water. In winter such fractions show similar values than in summer, indicating resuspension. Using the isotopic composition of sediment traps material and of different size fractions, as well as the isotopic composition of lake water, the water temperature measurements and mineralogy, we re-evaluated the bulk carbonate potential for palaeoclimatic reconstruction in the presence of detrital and re-suspended calcite. This re-evaluation leads to the following conclusion: (1) the endogenic signal can be amplified by applying a particle-size separation, once the size of endogenic calcite is known from SEM study; (2) resuspended calcite does not alter the endogenic signal, but it lowers the time resolution; (3) detrital input decreases at increasing distances from the source, and it modifies the isotopic signal only when very abundant; (4) influence of detrital calcite on bulk sediment isotopic composition can be calculated.  相似文献

We demonstrate a major ecological change in a large lake ecosystem in response to a series of extreme weather events. Phytoplankton community dynamics in subtropical Lake Okeechobee are described from 2000 through early 2008 with emphasis on inter-relationships among phytoplankton populations and associated environmental variables in this large, shallow eutrophic lake. The lake experienced the physical effects of three hurricanes in 2004–2005, which caused massive sediment resuspension, near total elimination of submerged aquatic vegetation, elevated biologically available nutrients and total suspended solids, and lower water transparency. Patterns of long-term co-dominance by nitrogen (N)-fixing cyanobacteria and meroplanktonic diatoms abruptly changed to dominance by only meroplanktonic diatoms. The planktonic cyanobacteria genera Anabaena and Planktolyngbya both decreased approximately an order of magnitude in the post-hurricane period despite large surpluses of bioavailable nutrients. Meroplanktonic diatoms (mostly Aulacoseira spp.) declined approximately 20%, perhaps because of superior competitive ability for light in a polymictic, turbid water column. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) suggested that reduction in planktonic cyanobacteria after compression of the photic zone and the persistence of meroplanktonic diatoms were related to light utilization traits for the key algal taxa and indicated that pre-existing light limitation and crustacean grazing pressure were intensified in the post-hurricane period.  相似文献

Freshwater tufa deposits are the result of calcification associated with biofilms dominated by cyanobacteria. Recent investigations highlighted the fact that the formation of microbial calcium carbonates is mainly dependent on the saturation index, which is determined by pH, the ion activity of Ca(2+) and CO(3)(2-), and the occurrence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by microorganisms. EPS, which contain carboxyl and/or hydroxyl groups, can strongly bind cations. This may result in inhibition of CaCO(3) precipitation. In contrast, the formation of templates for crystal nucleation was reported by many previous investigations. The purposes of this study were (i) to characterize the in situ distribution of EPS glycoconjugates in tufa-associated biofilms of two German hard-water creeks by employing fluorescence lectin-binding analysis (FLBA), (ii) to verify the specific lectin-binding pattern by competitive-inhibition assays, and (iii) to assess whether carbonates are associated with structural EPS domains. Three major in situ EPS domains (cyanobacterial, network-like, and cloud-like structures) were detected by FLBA in combination with laser scanning microscopy (LSM). Based on lectin specificity, the EPS glycoconjugates produced by cyanobacteria contained mainly fucose, amino sugars (N-acetyl-glucosamine and N-acetyl-galactosamine), and sialic acid. Tufa deposits were irregularly covered by network-like EPS structures, which may originate from cyanobacterial EPS secretions. Cloud-like EPS glycoconjugates were dominated by sialic acid, amino sugars, and galactose. In some cases calcium carbonate crystals were associated with cyanobacterial EPS glycoconjugates. The detection of amino sugars and calcium carbonate in close association with decaying sheath material indicated that microbially mediated processes might be important for calcium carbonate precipitation in freshwater tufa systems.  相似文献

In the present study, laboratory precipitation experiments using similar water chemistry and two different bacterial cultures from Lake Ac?göl sediments, a hypersaline lake in Turkey, were performed to reproduce mineral assemblages similar to those found in the lake. Two different bacterial cultures induce various calcium/magnesium carbonates precipitation under all the experimental conditions (solid vs. liquid): Hydromagnesite, dypingite, huntite, monohydrocalcite, and aragonite. The geochemical program PHREEQC was used to calculate the mineral saturation indexes in the cultures and in lake water. Carbonate mineral assemblages identified in the experiments seem to be independent of the type of microorganisms but rather controlled by the chemical composition and physical conditions of the media. The relative amounts of monohydrocalcite, hydromagnesite, and dypingite are controlled by varying sulfate concentration from 0 to 56 mM. This demonstrates a kinetic effect that could similarly affect the mineral assemblage in the lake. Also the spherical morphology of hydromagnesite points to growth of these minerals under partial inhibition in the brine under high concentrations of ions and organic polymers produced by the microbial communities. As reproduced by the culture experiments, the authigenic carbonate mineral assemblage of Lake Ac?göl most likely results from interplay of ionic composition of the brine and microbial effects.  相似文献

To obtain a restoring and protective calcite layer on degraded limestone, five different strains of the Bacillus sphaericus group and one strain of Bacillus lentus were tested for their ureolytic driven calcium carbonate precipitation. Although all the Bacillus strains were capable of depositing calcium carbonate, differences occurred in the amount of precipitated calcium carbonate on agar plate colonies. Seven parameters involved in the process were examined: calcite deposition on limestone cubes, pH increase, urea degrading capacity, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-production, biofilm formation, ζ-potential and deposition of dense crystal layers. The strain selection for optimal deposition of a dense CaCO3 layer on limestone, was based on decrease in water absorption rate by treated limestone. Not all of the bacterial strains were effective in the restoration of deteriorated Euville limestone. The best calcite precipitating strains were characterised by high ureolytic efficiency, homogeneous calcite deposition on limestone cubes and a very negative ζ-potential.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria belonging to the Synechococcus group are ubiquitous inhabitants of diverse marine and freshwater environments. Through interactions with the soluble constituents of their aqueous habitats, they inevitably affect the chemistry of the waters they inhabit. Synechococcus strain GL24 was isolated from Fayetteville Green Lake, New York, where it has a demonstrated role in the formation of calcitic minerals. In order to understand the detailed interactions which lead to mineral formation by this organism, we have undertaken detailed ultrastructural studies of its cell surface and the initial events in mineral growth using a variety of electron microscopic and computer image enhancement techniques. Synechococcus strain GL24 has a hexagonally symmetrical S layer as its outermost cell surface component. The constituent protein(s) of this structure appears as a double band by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with M(r)s of 104,000 and 109,000. We demonstrate that the S layer acts as a template for fine-grain gypsum and calcite formation by providing discrete, regularly arranged nucleation sites for the critical initial events in the mineralization process. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a bacterial S layer has been shown to have a role in mineral formation in a natural environment, and this report provides conclusive evidence for the specific involvement of bacterial surfaces in natural mineral formation processes.  相似文献

During the period from July 1992 to March 1995, suspended particulate matter in Lake Biwa was collected at 1-month intervals, and the contents of Al, Si, and P were determined. Based on the analytical data, the particulate matter was fractionated by calculation into three types of particles of different origins: particles of terrigenous origin, particles of diatom origin, and particles due to microorganisms except for diatoms. The relative abundance of the respective particles was featured in water depth-time (month) diagrams, with contours in terms of weight per liter of lake water. As a result, the characteristic distributions of the particles were revealed, and their inherent roles in natural purification were distinguished from each other. Of the three types of particles, the particles of diatom origin were anticipated to be the principal scavengers not only of nutritious elements of silicon and phosphorus, but also of various metal ions dissolved in the lake. Factors that regulate phytoplankton dynamics in shallow, productive lakes are poorly understood, due to their predisposition for frequent algal blooms and sediment resuspension events. In Lake Apopka, greatest phytoplankton biomass reflects wind-induced resuspension of algae (meroplankton) that exists on the aphotic lake bottom in a layer approximately 5 cm thick; this assemblage is dominated by diatoms (>60% of total biomass) that can occur in resting stages. Once exposed to moderate light, meroplankton are capable of growth and photosynthetic rates comparable with surface populations. In Lake Okeechobee, remote sensing was used to assess the basin-wide distribution of suspended particles. Satellite reflectance values agreed well with in situ particle densities at 20 in-lake stations (average r2; LANDSAT = 0.81, AVHRR = 0.53), and maps of algal blooms (r2 = 0.79, p ≤ 0.01). The greatest chlorophyll concentrations occurred in the vicinity of tributary nutrient inputs at the lake's perimeter, while turbidity increased towards the center of the lake reflecting predominant water circulation patterns. These results underscore the importance of physical-biological interactions in lakes.  相似文献

Fayetteville Green Lake (FGL) is a recognized, extensively studied present‐day model of the stratified Proterozoic ocean. Nonetheless, biomass sedimentation in FGL remains hard to explain: while virtually all sediment pigments belong to photosynthetic sulfur bacteria from a chemocline, the isotopic carbon signature of the bulk organic matter suggests its epilimnetic phytoplankton origin. To explain the epilimnetic origin of sedimented carbon, we studied the dominant Synechococci, isolated from FGL. Here, we present experimental evidence that FGL Synechococci produce copious extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) especially when availability of inorganic carbon (Ci) is high relative to availability of other macronutrients, for example phosphorus. The accumulating EPS become impregnated with calcium, magnesium, and sodium cations and are released to the environment as ballasted cell coverings. Sedimentation of these cell‐free EPS can constitute the bulk of pigment‐free organic material in FGL sediment. Because increased availability of Ci specifically stimulates production of EPS and the accumulated EPS adsorb cations and become ballasted, we propose the universal role of cyanobacterial EPS in biomass sedimentation in the high‐Ci Paleoproterozoic ocean as well as in modern aquatic systems like FGL.  相似文献

Organic biomarkers in marine sedimentary rocks hold important clues about the early history of Earth's surface environment. The chemical relicts of carotenoids from anoxygenic sulfur bacteria are of particular interest to geoscientists because of their potential to signal episodes of marine photic-zone euxinia such as those proposed for extended periods in the Proterozoic as well as brief intervals during the Phanerozoic. It is therefore critical to constrain the environmental and physiological factors that influence carotenoid production and preservation in modern environments. Here, we present the results of coupled pigment and nucleic acid clone library analyses from planktonic and benthic samples collected from a microbially dominated meromictic lake, Fayetteville Green Lake (New York). Purple sulfur bacteria (PSB) are abundant and diverse both in the water column at the chemocline and in benthic mats below oxygenated shallow waters, with different PSB species inhabiting the two environments. Okenone (from PSB) is an abundant carotenoid in both the chemocline waters and in benthic mats. Green sulfur bacteria and their primary pigment Bchl e are also represented in and below the chemocline. However, the water column and sediments are devoid of the green sulfur bacteria carotenoid isorenieratene. The unexpected absence of isorenieratene and apparent benthic production of okenone provide strong rationale for continued exploration of the microbial ecology of biomarker production in modern euxinic environments.  相似文献

By chemical analyses at the eutrophic Wallersee (Austria) a considerable precipitation of calcite during autumn overturn was found. It is a pure anorganic calcite precipitation, caused by the loss of free carbonic acid to the atmosphere during the mixing of epilimnic and hypolimnic water. An essential coprecipitation of phosphorus with the anorganic calcite precipitation could be shown by calcium and phosphorus balances and by SEM investigations. During the epilimnic biogenic calcite precipitation (in summer) phosphorus coprecipitation makes 0.19% of the calcium fallout. Phosphorus coprecipitation increases up to 0.42 % during the anorganic calcite precipitation when autumn overturn takes place. With respect to the total phosphorus sedimentation in the lake 25 % are coprecipitated with calcite.  相似文献

Carbonates are widespread occurrences in various environmental conditions. Particularly, microbial induced and/or controlled carbonate formations are considered significant archives for recording critical environmental conditions that can be used not only to reconstruct paleo-environments, but also to gain valuable information about evidence of life in environments. Therefore, deciphering carbonate precipitation mechanisms, and the factors controlling these processes, particularly in extreme environments, hold significant insights for industrial applications, and for searching life in extra-terrestrial environments. In the scope of these contexts, we tried to model carbonate precipitation mechanism and possible biological influences in a hypersaline lake, known as an extreme environment in Turkey, in terms of its water chemistry. The aim of this research is to model CaCO3 precipitation in the Acıgöl Lake, using water quality data from the field, and meteorological data obtained from the Turkish State Meteorological Service for the years 2013 and 2015. To achieve this, AQUATOX model is utilized. The model is calibrated for nine stations of the lake using parameters related to water quality, site characteristics, inflow loadings and lake hydrodynamics. Calibration dataset is obtained from the field measurements and meteorological data, for the year 2013. Model validation is conducted both using experimental data, and field observations, obtained in August, 2015. An integrated modeling approach is undertaken by coupling a geochemical reaction model and a process-based ecosystem model, AQUATOX; using field, experimental and meteorological data. Model results suggest that the amount of CaCO3 precipitation in the system ranges from 35.16 to 128.48 mg L−1 d1. Temperature, photosynthesis rate, depth and pH are found to be the most significant variables that govern the biogeochemical processes responsible for CaCO3 precipitation. The model showed a strong relationship between calcite precipitation and certain cyanobacteria species such as Anabaena and Aphanizomenon sp. Results also indicate that the model was successful in representing the relationships between calcite precipitation variations, and phosphate and pH. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient and NRMSE are found to be 0.93 and 0.29, respectively.  相似文献

Modern carbonate tufa towers in the alkaline (~pH 9.5) Big Soda Lake (BSL), Nevada, exhibit rapid precipitation rates (exceeding 3 cm/year) and host diverse microbial communities. Geochemical indicators reveal that carbonate precipitation is, in part, promoted by the mixing of calcium-rich groundwater and carbonate-rich lake water, such that a microbial role for carbonate precipitation is unknown. Here, we characterize the BSL microbial communities and evaluate their potential effects on carbonate precipitation that may influence fast carbonate precipitation rates of the active tufa mounds of BSL. Small subunit rRNA gene surveys indicate a diverse microbial community living endolithically, in interior voids, and on tufa surfaces. Metagenomic DNA sequencing shows that genes associated with metabolisms that are capable of increasing carbonate saturation (e.g., photosynthesis, ureolysis, and bicarbonate transport) are abundant. Enzyme activity assays revealed that urease and carbonic anhydrase, two microbial enzymes that promote carbonate precipitation, are active in situ in BSL tufa biofilms, and urease also increased calcium carbonate precipitation rates in laboratory incubation analyses. We propose that, although BSL tufas form partially as a result of water mixing, tufa-inhabiting microbiota promote rapid carbonate authigenesis via ureolysis, and potentially via bicarbonate dehydration and CO2 outgassing by carbonic anhydrase. Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation in BSL tufas may generate signatures preserved in the carbonate microfabric, such as stromatolitic layers, which could serve as models for developing potential biosignatures on Earth and elsewhere.  相似文献
