Globba schomburgkii Hook.f. is an ornamental plant that has recently found increasing demand as cut flowers, hence generating a significant number of by‐products from different parts of the plant. To investigate the further applications of these by‐products, twelve crude extracts from rhizomes, stalks, leaves, and flowers were prepared by serial exhaustive extraction. The volatile composition of these extracts was analyzed by GC/MS; a total of 89 compounds were identified, most of which were sesquiterpenes as well as some labdane‐type diterpenes. The antimicrobial activities of these extracts were evaluated, revealing a correlation between the terpenoid content and antibacterial activities. Notably, the dichloromethane extracts of rhizomes and flowers, which contained the highest amount of terpenoids (e. g., α‐gurjunene, guaia‐9,11‐diene, γ‐bicyclohomofarnesal, β‐caryophyllene, and caryophyllene oxide), displayed the most prominent antibacterial activities. This work demonstrates the potential use of the crude extracts from G. schomburgkii as natural antibacterial ingredients for pharmaceutical and other applications.

Bioassay‐guided fractionation was conducted on dichloromethane extract from the rhizomes of Globba schomburgkii Hook.f., which have previously been reported as the part with the highest antibacterial activity. 10 fractions and 20 sub‐fractions were obtained and evaluated for their potency against various strains of bacteria. The most active sub‐fractions were 8 times more effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus than the original crude extract. Moreover, two pure compounds, namely petasol and (E)‐15,16‐dinorlabda‐8(17),11‐dien‐13‐one, were successfully isolated and characterized for the first time from this plant species. Untargeted compound analysis of all fractions and sub‐fractions was performed by gas chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry, leading to positive identification of 167 compounds according to comparison with the mass spectrum and retention index database, 137 of which have never been reported for G. schomburgkii. The correlation between antibacterial activity and composition of each fraction suggests that the bioactive compounds could be 4,8‐β‐epoxycaryophyllene, methyl isocostate, (E)‐labda‐8(17),12‐diene‐15,16‐dial, α‐kessyl acetate, zederone, clovanediol, ledene oxide‐(I), alantolactone, or 8α,11‐elemadiol.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of the essential oils as well as the anatomy of the aerial parts from Baccharis aracatubaensis, Baccharis burchellii, and Baccharis organensis owing to the therapeutic potential of Baccharis. The volatile constituents were analyzed using GC/MS, the antioxidant activity was evaluated by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORACFL) and DPPH assays, and the antimicrobial activity by a microdilution technique. Of the 56 compounds identified, only seven (β‐caryophyllene, γ‐muurolene, bicyclogermacrene, β‐germacrene, spathulenol, τ‐muurolol, and α‐cadinol) were common in the three specimens studied. Of these, γ‐muurolene was found abundantly in B. aracatubaensis, while bicyclogermacrene was abundant in B. burchellii and B. organensis. The essential oils exhibited antioxidant activity in the ORACFL (>500.0 μmol TE g?1) and DPPH assays. However, they did not exhibit any antimicrobial activity. Secretory ducts and flagelliform glandular trichomes were observed in the anatomical study of all the Baccharis species studied.

Most species of the genus Laggera are often used in traditional and folk medicines for the treatment of jaundice, inflammation, leukemia, removing phlegm, bronchitis and bacterial diseases. The essential oils obtained from Laggera plants are rich sources of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Among oxygenated monoterpenes, aromatic ether 2,5‐dimethoxy‐p‐cymene is the most abundant and dominant compound of many essential oils of the Laggera species. Till today, to the best of our knowledge, chemical compounds of the essential oils and/or extracts of only eight Laggera species were reported from different countries. Thus, this review presents the chemical compositions and biological activities of the essential oils of these plants studied in thirteen countries. In addition, it discusses the reported ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological information as well as biological activities of the extracts and some of the isolated compounds of Laggera plants species.

The essential oils (EOs) from leaves, stems, and whole plant of Piper boehmeriifolium were analyzed using GC/FID and GC/MS. The main constituents of P. boehmeriifolium EOs were β‐caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, β‐elemene, spathulenol, germacrene D, β‐selinene, and neointermedeol. The antioxidant potential of the EOs were determined using DPPH?, ABTS?+ and FRAP assays. In ABTS?+ assay, the leaf oil exhibited a remarkable activity with an IC50 value of 7.36 μg/mL almost similar to BHT (4.06 μg/mL). Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of the oils as well as their synergistic potential with conventional antibiotics were evaluated using microdilution and Checkerboard assays. The results revealed that the oils from different parts of P. boehmeriifolium inhibited the growth of all tested bacteria and the minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined to be 0.078 – 1.250 mg/mL. In combination with chloramphenicol or streptomycin, the oils showed significant synergistic antibacterial effects in most cases. Besides, the results of MTT assay indicated that the oil of the whole plant exhibited significant cytotoxic activities on human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) and human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7). In summary, the P. boehmeriifolium oils could be regarded as a prospective source for pharmacologically active compounds.

This work describes the study of the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oils (EOs) of the different organs (leaves, flowers, stems and roots) from Eruca vesicaria. According to the GC and GC/MS analysis, all the EOs were dominated by erucin (4‐methylthiobutyl isothiocyanate) with a percentage ranging from 17.9 % (leaves) to 98.5 % (roots). The isolated EOs were evaluated for their antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS and β‐carotene/linoleic acid), antibacterial and inhibitory property against α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase. Most EOs exhibited an interesting α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase inhibitory potential. The roots essential oil was found to be the most active with IC50 values of 0.80±0.06 and 0.11±0.01 μg mL?1, respectively. The essential oil of roots exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (DPPH, PI=92.76±0.01 %; ABTS, PI=78.87±0.19; and β‐carotene, PI=56.1±0.01 %). The isolated oils were also tested for their antibacterial activity against two Gram‐positive and three Gram‐negative bacteria. Moderate results have been noted by comparison with Gentamicin used as positive control.

The chemical composition and allelopathic, phytotoxic and pesticidal activities of Atriplex cana Ledeb . (Amaranthaceae) essential oil were investigated. Nineteen compounds were identified via GC/MS, representing 82.3 % of the total oil, and the most abundant constituents were dibutyl phthalate (21.79 %), eucalyptol (20.14 %) and myrtenyl acetate (15.56 %). The results showed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by A. cana significantly inhibited seedling growth of Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Poa annua L., and 80 g of fresh stems and leaves of A. cana in a 1.5 L airtight container almost completely suppressed the seed germination of both plants. Meanwhile, 5 μg/mL essential oil completely inhibited the seed germination of A. retroflexus, Medicago sativa L., P. annua and Echinochloa crusgalli L. Pesticidal testing revealed that the essential oil had strong behavioral avoidance and lethal effects on Aphis pomi DeGeer . Five microliters of essential oil/Petri dish treatment resulted in an 84.5 % mortality rate after 12 h, and the mortality rate reached nearly 100 % after 48 h. This report is the first one on the chemical composition as well as the biological activity of the essential oil of A. cana, and our results indicate that the oil is valuable in terms of being further exploited as a bioherbicide/insecticide.

An extensive phytochemical study of the aerial parts of Vernonia guineensis Benth. (Asteraceae) led to the isolation of a new flavone, vernoguinoflavone and a naturally isolated glycerol ester, eicosanoic acid 2‐hydroxy‐1,3‐propanediyl ester, together with eighteen known secondary metabolites including quercetin, luteolin, vernopicrin, vernomelitensin, β‐amyrin, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, lupeol, betulinic acid, β‐carotene, a mixture of stigmasterol and β‐sitosterol, β‐sitosterol‐3‐Oβ‐D‐glucoside, 2,3‐dihydroxypropyl heptacosanoate, pentacosanoic acid, docosan‐1‐ol, tritriacontan‐1‐ol, and heptatriacontan‐1‐ol. Eleven compounds are reported herein for the first time from this species. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses, particularly 1D and 2D NMR, and HR‐ESI‐MS and by comparison of their data with those reported in the literature. The crude extract, fractions and some isolated compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against Gram‐negative bacteria: Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Shigella flexineri (NR 518), Salmonella muenchen, Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella typhi (ATCC 19430). All the tested compounds demonstrated inhibitory activities against the tested enteric bacteria with MIC values ranging from 3.12 to 100 μg/ml. Three flavonoids isolated from the most active fraction demonstrated the best bioactivities against Escherichia coli, Salmonella muenchen and Salmonella typhimurium with MIC values ranging from 3.12 to 25 μg/mL.

Sponges from freshwater environments, unlike marine's, are poorly known producers of natural compounds with medicinal purposes. Amazonian sponges produce massive large specimens and are widely spread, taxonomically diverse and their metabolites could represent a new frontier on unusual natural products to treat diseases such as Alzheimer's and Malaria. Species of Metania and Drulia (Metaniidae) genera are major contributors to the fauna of Amazonian freshwater sponges. Methanolic extracts from several species from these genera had their inhibitory activities evaluated in vitro, for parasite Plasmodium falciparum and acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes (AChE and BChE). All extracts were able to inhibit AChE, although no activity was observed towards BChE. Drulia uruguayensis extract was the most potent, inhibiting AChE with IC50=1.04 mg/mL. For antiplasmodial activity, all species showed inhibition to P. falciparum, but Metania reticulata being the most efficient with IC50=2.7 μg/mL. Mass spectrometry analyses evidenced the presence of fatty acids and sterols in active extracts.
