Pothos crassipedunculatus Sivadasan & Mohanan (Araceae), a new species closely related to the SW. Indian endemic and little known speciesP. thomsonianus Schott is described. It is characterized by the the non-ligulate, shortly vaginate petiole, thickly peduncled inflorescence, broadly ovate spathe and a sessile spadix. To understand effects of human disturbance on alert response of Père David's deer, we carried out an experiment in the Dafeng Père David's Deer Reserve (32°59′–33°03′N, 120°47′–120°53′E), China. In the spring and summer, we observed alert responses (including stare, walking away, and flee) of deer and recorded the intensity of tourist disturbance in a small display pen using a laser‐range finder to measure the alert distance of a free‐ranging group in a large enclosure. We also recorded the pattern of head orientation when deer were resting in these two deer groups. After statistical analysis, we found that: 1) in small pen, the frequency of alert response was significantly different among different intensities of human disturbance; strong disturbance resulted in higher frequency of alert response; 2) stare distance in the free‐ranging group in summer was significantly longer than that in spring, but the distance of walking away and the distance of flee showed no significant difference between the two seasons; and 3) in free‐ranging group, there was no significant directional difference in head orientation, whereas in display group, there was a significant directional difference in head orientation. We suggest that: 1) under the captive situation, human disturbance may be one of the factors that affect alert response in Père David's deer; and 2) Père David's deer adopted different alert response to adapt to human disturbance under different circumstance. We recommended that relationships between alert response and human disturbance should be considered in ex situ conservation of this field extinct deer. The translocation of phosphorus (P) from terrestrial landscapes to aquatic bodies is of concern due to the impact of elevated P on aquatic system functioning and integrity. Due to their common location in depressions within landscapes, wetlands, including so-called geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs), receive and process entrained P. The ability of depressional wetlands, or GIWs, to sequester P may vary by wetland type or by land use modality. In this study we quantified three measures of P sorption capacities for two common GIW types (i.e., emergent marsh and forested wetlands) in two different land use modalities (i.e., agricultural and least impacted land uses) across 55 sites in Florida, USA. The equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) averaged 6.42 ± 5.18 mg P L?1 (standard deviation reported throughout); and ranged from 0.01–27.18 mg P L?1; there were no differences between GIW type or land use modality, nor interaction effects. Significant differences in phosphorus buffering capacity (PBC) were found between GIW types and land use, but no interaction effects. Forested GIWs [average 306.64 ± 229.63 (mg P kg?1) (µg P L?1)?1], and GIWs in agricultural settings [average 269.95 ± 236.87 (mg P kg?1) (µg P L?1)?1] had the highest PBC values. The maximum sorption capacity (Smax) was found to only differ by type, with forested wetlands (1274.5 ± 1315.7 mg P kg?1) having over three times the capacity of emergent GIWs (417.5 ± 534.6 mg P kg?1). Classification trees suggested GIW soil parameters of bulk density, organic content, and concentrations of total P, H2O-extractable P, and HCl-extractable P were important to classifying GIW P-sorption metrics. We conclude that GIWs have high potential to retain P, but that the entrained P may be remobilized to the wetland water column depending on storm and groundwater input P concentrations. The relative hydrologic dis-connectivity of GIWs from other aquatic systems may provide sufficient retention time to retain elevated P within these systems, thereby providing an ecosystem service to downstream waters.  相似文献

Understanding patterns of genetic diversity and population structure for rare, narrowly endemic plant species, such as Pinguicula ionantha (Godfrey’s butterwort; Lentibulariaceae), informs conservation goals and can directly affect management decisions. Pinguicula ionantha is a federally listed species endemic to the Florida Panhandle in the southeastern USA. The main goal of our study was to assess patterns of genetic diversity and structure in 17 P. ionantha populations, and to determine if diversity is associated with geographic location or population characteristics. We scored 240 individuals at a total of 899 AFLP markers (893 polymorphic markers). We found no relationship between the estimated population size with either of two measures of diversity (proportion of loci polymorphic, P = 0.37; Nei’s gene diversity, P = 0.50). We also found low levels of population genetic structure; there was no clear relationship of genetic isolation by distance (P = 0.23) and only a small (but significant) proportion of genetic variation was partitioned amongst regions (2.4 %, P = 0.02) or populations (20.8 %, P < 0.001). STRUCTURE analysis found that the model with two inferred clusters (K = 2) best described the AFLP data; the dominant cluster at each site corresponded to the results from PCoA and Nei’s genetic distance analyses. The observed patterns of genetic diversity suggest that although P. ionantha populations are isolated spatially by distance and both natural and anthropogenic barriers, some gene flow occurs among them or isolation has been too recent to leave a genetic signature. The relatively low level of genetic diversity associated with this species is a concern as it may impair fitness and evolutionary capability in a changing environment. The results of this study provide the foundation for the development of management practices that will assist in the protection of this rare carnivorous plant.  相似文献

Structural requirements for florigenic activity among gibberellins (GAs) and GA derivatives, including several new ones, applied once to leaves of Lolium temulentum, were examined. The compounds were applied to plants kept either in non-inductive short days (SD) or exposed to one inductive long day (LD). Inflorescence initiation and stem-elongation responses were assessed three weeks later. Among the GAs used, the range in effective dose for inflorescence initiation was more than 1000-fold, but substantially less for stem elongation. Some GAs promoted both stem elongation and inflorescence initiation, some promoted one without the other, and some affected neither. The structural features enhancing florigenic activity were often different from those enhancing stem elongation. Except in the case of 2,2-dimethyl GA4, a double bond in the A ring at either C-1,2 or C-2,3 was essential for high florigenic activity, though not for stem elongation. A free carboxy group was needed for both. Inflorescence initiation in Lolium was enhanced by hydroxylation at C-12, ?13 and ?15, whereas hydroxylation at C-3 reduced the effect on inflorescence initiation but increased that on stem elongation. A 12β-hydroxyl was more effective than the α epimer for inflorescence initiation whereas the reverse was true for stem elongation. Although such differential effectiveness of GAs for inflorescence initiation and for stem elongation could reflect differences in uptake, transport or metabolism, we suggest that it is indicative of specific structural requirements for inflorescence initiation.  相似文献

Paepalanthus sect. Diphyomene has inflorescences arranged in umbels. The underlying bauplan seems however to be more complex and composed of several distinct subunits. Despite appearing superficially very similar, the morphology and anatomy of the inflorescences can supply useful information for the understanding of the phylogeny and taxonomy of the group. Inflorescences of Paepalanthus erectifolius, Paepalanthus flaccidus, Paepalanthus giganteus, and Paepalanthus polycladus were analyzed in regard to branching pattern and anatomy. In P. erectifolius, P. giganteus and P. polycladus the structure is a tribotryum, with terminal dibotryum, and with pherophylls bearing lateral dibotrya. In P. flaccidus, the inflorescence is a pleiobotryum, with terminal subunit, and without pherophylls. Secondary inflorescences may occur in all species without regular pattern. Especially when grown in sites without a pronounced seasonality, the distinction between enrichment zone (part of the same inflorescence) and new inflorescences may be obscured. The main anatomical features supplying diagnostic and phylogenetic information are as follows: (a) in the elongated axis, the thickness of the epidermal cell walls and the cortex size; (b) in the bracts, the quantity of parenchyma cells (c) in the scapes, the shape and the presence of a pith tissue. Therefore, P. sect. Diphyomene can be divided in two groups; group A is represented by P. erectifolius, P. giganteus and P. polycladus, and group B is represented by P. flaccidus. The differentiation is based in both, inflorescence structure and anatomy. Group A presents a life cycle and anatomical features similar to species of Actinocephalus. Molecular trees also point that these two groups are closely related. However, inflorescence morphology and blooming sequence are different. Species of group B present an inflorescence structure and anatomical features shared with many genera and species in Eriocaulaceae. The available molecular and morphology based phylogenies still do not allow a precise allocation of the group in the bulk of basal species of Paepalanthus collocated in P. sect. Variabiles. The characters described and used here supply however important information towards this goal.  相似文献

Wastewater from different sources shows great differences in concentrations and ratios of N and P. In order to choose suitable plant species to remove excess N and/or P from polluted waters, it is important to know the performances of these plants under different N and P concentrations. In this study, we investigated the growth and N and P removal rate of three macrophytes, Coix lacryma-jobi, Iris wilsonii, and Arundo donax under six N and P combination treatments. C. lacryma-jobi preferred higher N and P concentrations (16 mg N L?1 and 3.2 mg P L?1), and increasing N supply could increase its P removal rate. I. wilsonii exhibited a growth preference at a combination of moderate N and P concentrations (8 mg N L?1 and 0.8 mg P L?1). A. donax could grow well at all combinations of N and P and had significantly higher relative growth rate and N and P removal rates than the other two species. These results showed A. donax is a promising species to treat various polluted waters and the other two species can be used specifically to treat certain types of wastewater.  相似文献

Pothos vietnamensis V. D. Nguyen & P. C. Boyce is described and illustrated from northern Vietnam as a new species of the Pothos supergroup, and it is compared with the two most similar species: P. kerrii and P. pilulifer to which P. vietnamensis is comparable by having a very small fertile portion (< 5 mm diameter) on the spadix. The monotypic genusTrachylobium [T. verrucosum (Gaertn.) Oliv.] from East Africa and adjacent islands is returned toHymenaea verrucosa Gaertn. on the basis of reevaluation of inflorescence, flower, and fruit characters together with new evidence from seedlings, pollen, leaf venation, chromosome number, and chemistry of the resins.Hymenaea verrucosa appears more similar to an Amazonian and Cuban group of species, which may have been derived from a common African ancestral stock in the Tertiary period, than to another group of species that probably evolved from the evergreen forest species and then radiated into an expanding area of drier habitats during the later Tertiary and dry intervals of the Pleistocene. Originally the genusTrachylobium was distinguished fromHymenaea by a morphological comparison with the probably more recently evolved species. A possible explanation is presented for the disjunct amphi-Atlantic distribution ofH. verrucosa and the neotropical species ofHymenaea.  相似文献

Morpho-anatomical studies of short-shoots of Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König collected in Tampa Bay, Florida from February 1979 to October 1980 (n = 5394) demonstrated the presence of sexually reproductive short-shoots during all months, except August and September. Mean inflorescence lengths (MIL) indicated that little inflorescence development occurs during autumn and winter (MIL 0.2–1.0 mm); MIL's in 1979 increased rapidly during April (19.47 mm ± 17.04 mm SD) and May (74.10 mm ± 27.11 mm SD), peaking in June (110.17 mm ± 8.88 mm SD). Large standard deviations reflect the presence of early stage inflorescences throughout the reproductive season. This suggests possible genetic diversity and aseasonality for floral induction. Quantitative in situ observations from 1981 to 1985 detected significant temporal and spatial variations in reproductive patterns. Annual variations in flowering (anthesis) may be explained by the influence of environmental factors, such as water temperature and salinity, on inflorescence development and survival. Spatial patchiness in reproductive effort, negative correlations between male and female short-shoot distributions and sex-related differences in the number of leaf scars short-shoot−1 may reflect clonal variation and/or a possible interaction of ramet age with sex expression in this species.  相似文献

Background

The potential of anti-aging effect of DPP-4 inhibitors is unknown. This study was performed to determine whether linagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, could protect against premature aging in klotho?/? mice.

Methods

Klotho?/? mice exhibit multiple phenotypes resembling human premature aging, including extremely shortened life span, cognitive impairment, hippocampal neurodegeneration, hair loss, muscle atrophy, hypoglycemia, etc. To investigate the effect of linagliptin on these aging-related phenotypes, male klotho?/? mice were divided into two groups: (1) control group fed the standard diet, and (2) linagliptin group fed the standard diet containing linagliptin. Treatment with linagliptin was performed for 4 weeks. The effect of linagliptin on the above mentioned aging-related phenotypes was examined.

Results

Body weight of klotho?/? mice was greater in linagliptin group than in control group (11.1 ± 0.3 vs 9.9 ± 0.3 g; P < 0.01), which was associated with greater gastrocnemius muscle weight (P < 0.01) and greater kidney weight (P < 0.05) in linagliptin group. Thus, linagliptin significantly prevented body weight loss in klotho?/? mice. Survival rate of klotho?/? mice was greater in linagliptin group (93%) compared to control group (67%), although the difference did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.08). None of linagliptin-treated klotho?/? mice had alopecia during the treatment (P < 0.05 vs control klotho?/? mice). Latency of klotho?/? mice in passive avoidance test was larger in linagliptin group than in control group (P < 0.05), indicating the amelioration of cognitive impairment by linagliptin. Cerebral blood flow of klotho?/? mice was larger in linagliptin group than in control group (P < 0.01), being associated with greater cerebral phospho-eNOS levels (P < 0.05) in linagliptin group. Neuronal cell number in hippocampal CA1 region was greater in linagliptin group than in control group (P < 0.05). Linagliptin group had greater cerebral phospho-Akt (P < 0.05) and phospho-CREB (P < 0.05) than control group. Thus, linagliptin ameliorated brain aging in klotho?/? mice. The degree of hypoglycemia in klotho?/? mice was less in linagliptin group than in control group, as estimated by the findings of OGTT.

Conclusions

Out work provided the evidence that DPP-4 inhibition with linagliptin slowed the progression of premature aging in klotho?/? mice, and provided a novel insight into the potential role of DPP-4 in the mechanism of premature aging.

One-season fallows with legumes such as Crotalaria grahamiana Wight & Arn. and phosphorus (P) fertilization have been suggested to improve crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa. Assessing the sustainability of these measures requires a sound understanding of soil processes, especially transformations of P which is often the main limiting nutrient. We compared plant production, nitrogen (N) and P balances and selected soil properties during 5.5 years in a field experiment with three crop rotations (continuous maize, maize-crotalaria and maize-natural fallow rotation) at two levels of P fertilization (0 and 50 kg P ha?1 yr?1, applied as triple superphosphate) on a Kandiudalfic Eutrudox in western Kenya. The maize yield forgone during growth of the crotalaria fallow was compensated by higher post-fallow yields, but the cumulative total maize yield was not significantly different from continuous maize. In all crop rotations, P fertilization doubled total maize yields, increased N removal by maize and remained without effect on amounts of recycled biomass. Crotalaria growth decreased in the course of the experiment due to pest problems. The highest levels of soil organic and microbial C, N and P were found in the maize-crotalaria fallow rotation. The increase in organic P was not accompanied by a change in resin-extractable P, while H2SO4-extractable inorganic P was depleted by up to 38 kg P ha?1 (1% of total P) in the 0–50 cm layer. Microbial P increased substantially when soil was supplied with C and N in a laboratory experiment, confirming field observations that the microbial biomass is limited by C and N rather than P availability. Maize-legume fallow rotations result in a shift towards organic and microbial nutrients and have to be complemented by balanced additions of inorganic fertilizers. Since 1985, China has established three breeding herds of Père David’s deer: the Beijing Père David’s Deer Park (39°07′N, 116°03′E), the Dafeng Père David’s Deer Nature Reserve (33°05′N, 120°49′E) and Shishou (Tianezhou) Père David’s Deer Nature Reserve (29°49′N, 112°33′E), through reintroductions of about 30–40 founders. Since establishment, all three populations have grown steadily. However, genetic backgrounds in those populations are still unknown. We studied the genetic diversity in Père David’s deer and genetic consequences of population relocations in China. We revealed that genetic diversity was extremely low in Père David’s deer populations in China. Only a single mtDNA D-loop haplotype was found in the deer, furthermore, only five polymorphic microsatellite loci were screened out from 84 pairs of species-transferred primers. Genetic makeup in the three Père David’s deer populations were significantly different (P < 0.01). H E and allelic richness in the Tianezhou population were the highest (0.54, 2.60, n = 31), Beijing population (0.52, 2.4, n = 125) showed the second highest measures, while the Dafeng population (0.46, 2.39, n = 39) measured lowest. Our results suggest that effective management of a species of low genetic diversity like the Père David’s deer should consider the genetic background of each founder to make sure genetic variations are preserved in both source population and relocated population. Now, the Tianezhou population is the most appropriate source population in China when establishing new Père David deer populations in the wild.

The correlation between pollen-ovule (P/O) ratio and breeding system has generally been analysed with respect either to pollination efficiency, or in terms of sex allocation theory. Pollen/ovule ratios were measured in nine species of Araceae belonging to two genera with bisexual flowers (Anaphyllopsis, Monstera) and three genera with unisexual flowers (Dieffenbachia, Philodendron, Montrichardia). The family Araceae with its unique inflorescence morphology allows the analysis of variations of the P/O ratio with respect to two basal morpho-functional pollination units: the flower or the inflorescence. We found a relationship between the value of the P/O ratio and the breeding system that is partially different from Cruden's results (1977). Some facultative xenogamous species have a higher P/O than the obligatory xenogamous species. A link was found between the P/O and the type of inflorescence, the floral cycle, and the mode of growth.  相似文献

Stoichiometric theory predicts that organisms should experience dietary imbalances not only when nutrients (e.g., phosphorus, P) are limiting relative to carbon (C), but also when nutrients are in excess (i.e., well above somatic demand). Nevertheless, few experiments have elucidated the response of consumers in such low C:P conditions. We assessed the growth, tissue stoichiometry, and nutrient excretion of the invasive primary consumer, zebra mussel (ZM), Dreissena polymorpha, under three dietary C:P conditions (C:P = 20, 45, 380) in the laboratory. The two low C:P conditions represent increasingly common eutrophic systems, while the high C:P treatment is representative of oligotrophic systems. Growth rates and condition were lower when ZMs were fed a low C:P (20 and 45) diet, compared to the C:P = 380 treatment, wherein ZMs grew rapidly and exhibited lower somatic C:P. Furthermore, ZMs in the C:P = 20 and C:P = 45 treatments excreted more ammonia indicative of protein catabolism. These results clearly show that hypereutrophic conditions invoke significant shifts in physiology, growth, and condition of ZMs. Together, these results are consistent with stoichiometric theory that predicts costs associated with the intake of excess dietary P.  相似文献

Biodegradable nanospheres or microspheres have been widely used as a sustained release system for the delivery of bioagents. In the present study, injectable sustained-release growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) (1–32) microspheres were prepared by a double emulsion-in liquid evaporation process using biodegradable polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) as the carrier. The entrapment efficiency was 89.79% and the mean particle size was 4.41 μm. The microspheres were injected into mouse tibialis muscle. After 30 days, mice injected with GRF (1–32) microspheres (group I) gained significantly more weight than any other treatment group, including mice injected with the naked plasmid (group II) (10.26 ± 0.13 vs. 9.09 ± 0.56; P < 0.05), a mixture of microspheres and plasmid (group III) (10.26 ± 0.13 vs. 8.57 ± 0.02; P < 0.05), or saline (IV) (10.26 ± 0.13 vs. 6.47 ± 0.26; P < 0.05). In addition, mice treated with the GRF (1–32) microspheres exhibited the highest expression levels of GRF as detected by PCR, RT-PCR, and ELISA (mean 2.56 ± 0.40, P < 0.05, overall comparison of treatment with groups II, III, and IV). Additionally, rabbits were injected in the tibialis muscle with the same treatments described above. After 30 days, the group treated with GRF (1–32) microspheres gained the most weight. At day 30 postinjection, weight gain in group I was 63.93% higher than group II (plasmid) (877.10 ± 24.42 vs. 535.05 ± 26.38; P < 0.05), 108.59% higher than group III (blank MS) (877.10 ± 24.42 vs. 420.50 ± 19.39; P < 0.05), and 93.94% higher than group IV (saline) (877.10 ± 24.42 vs. 452.25 ± 27.38; P < 0.05). Furthermore, IGF-1 levels in the serum from GRF microsphere-treated group were elevated relative to all other groups. The present results suggest that encapsulation of GRF with PLGA increases GRF gene expression in muscle after local plasmid delivery, and stimulates significantly more weight gain than delivery of the naked plasmid alone.  相似文献

A total of 21 Colocasiomyia species, including 17 undescribed species, are reported from Sabah (Mt. Kinabalu and neighboring areas), Malaysia, based on samples collected from inflorescences of 14 or 15 Araceae species. This number of species is the largest as a local fauna of this genus in the world. The high species diversity is attributed to 12 undescribed species belonging to the Colocasiomyia baechlii species group. A particular breeding habit of Colocasiomyia is sharing of the same inflorescence by a pair of species, with partial niche separation between them: one species uses exclusively the pistillate (lower female‐flower) section of the spadix for oviposition and larval development, whereas the other mostly uses the staminate (upper male‐flower) section. However, the baechlii group species show quite different patterns of host plant use: many (up to eight) species cohabit on the same inflorescence. It is unlikely that they separate their breeding niches micro‐allopatrically within an inflorescence. Instead, species composition and their proportions of individual numbers vary among different localities, seasons and host plants, with partial overlap among them. Such partial separations in local distribution, phenology and host selection would in combination contribute to their coexistence and promote the species diversity of this group.  相似文献

Phosphorus acquisition efficiency of maize (Zea mays L.) and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was investigated in a flowing nutrient solution culture at constant P concentrations of 0.2, 1 and 100 μM. To calculate the P influx and study changes in plant growth and P uptake in relation to plant age, four harvests were taken. Phosphorus uptake kinetics of the roots, i.e. maximum influx, I\max, the Michaelis constant, Km, and the minimum concentration, CLmin (the concentration at which no net uptake occurs) were estimated in a series of short-term experiments, based on the rate of depletion of P from solution over a range of concentrations. At 1 μM P, maize was more P efficient producing up to 90% of its maximum yield as compared to groundnut with only 20% of maximum yield. A 3 times faster P uptake rate was the reason for the maize P efficiency. In contrast for groundnut at 1 μM P, a net efflux was observed at some development stages of this crop indicating a much higher P requirement at the root surface for maximum growth. Maize had a 6 times higher I\max value and a 2 times higher Km value as compared to groundnut. The higher influx of maize was mainly because of the higher I\max. Maize previously grown at low P concentrations had a CLmin of 0.1 μM, while groundnut had values of 0.2 and 0.6 μM. Furthermore groundnut previously grown at 100 μM, was not able to absorb P even at 40 μM. Acclimation to low P concentrations in solution by increasing I\max or decreasing Km was not evident in this study. Differences in P acquisition efficiency between maize and groundnut in solution culture were mainly because of differences in P-uptake kinetics, and to a lesser extent to the size of the root system.  相似文献
