The paper presents the results of experimental assessment of the quality parameters of wheat grain infested with the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae and of flour and bread produced from this grain. The most important and the least stable parameters were the flour yield, ash content, whiteness, and fat acidity value. The infested grain had higher densities of micrococci, yeast, Aspergillus glaucus, and A. candidus.  相似文献

Two parasitoids,Pteromalus cerealellae (Ashmead) andAnisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), were compared for their ability to parasitize two important internally-developing insect pests of stored maize (Zea mays L.). Parasitism byP. cerealellae was greater on Angoumois grain moth,Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), than on maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, in no-choice experiments.Anisopteromalus calandrae parasitized more maize weevils than didP. cerealellae. The former parasitoid parasitized only a few Angoumois grain moths successfully in maize, but parasitized many in wheat if the hosts were younger than 3 weeks old. Thus, both host age and type of grain affect suitability for parasitism. The effects of parental host (species on which the female developed) and experimental host (species exposed to parasitism) on parasitism rate ofP. cerealellae were tested in a host-switching experiment. Parasitism by parasitoids reared on maize weevils was 23% lower than that of parasitoids reared on Angoumois grain moth. This effect was independent of which host the filial generation of parasitoids was tested on. However, the experimental host species had a much greater effect on parasitoid fecundity than the parental host species. Female progeny had smaller body sizes when emerging from maize weevil than from Angoumois grain moth, which may explain the parental host effect on fecundity. There was also a slight intergenerational effect of host species on parasitoid body size.  相似文献

The changes in moisture content, storage mycoflora and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in bran from untreated or raw rice (Rr) and parboiled rice (Pbr) stored in small lots in polyethylene bags were studied at 15-day intervals up to 60 days, using five lots of each type of bran. Deterioration was more rapid with reference to all the three parameters, in Rr bran compared to Pbr bran, the former becoming completely overgrown and caked with fungi by the end of 60 days.Aspergillus flavus was the dominant fungus in Pbr bran, whereasA. candidus andTrichoderma viride were abundant in Rr bran. The frequency of incidence as well as concentration of AFB1 increased with storage time in both types of bran, but the rate of increase as well as overall concentration were much higher in Rr bran. The behavioral response of the larval parasitoid Spintherus dubius (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) to volatile compounds derived from its Apion weevil hosts was investigated in two-choice bioassays. Odor source candidates were the larval and adult stages of weevils, clover flowers, and feces from adult weevils. Despite S. dubius being a larval parasitoid, the odor of weevil larvae isolated from the clover flowers was not attractive to female parasitoids. Surprisingly, S. dubius females were instead attracted by the odor from the feces of adult weevils. The female parasitoids were similarly attracted to the feces produced by the two main hosts, the red clover weevil (A. trifolii) and the white clover weevil (A. fulvipes). Chemical analysis of the volatile composition of feces produced by the two hosts revealed qualitatively similar odor profiles, correlating with the observed attraction by the parasitoid towards both odor sources. Some of the identified volatile compounds are commonly present in clover plant headspace fractions and may function as a kairomone to facilitate orientation by S. dubius to Apion-infested clover flowers. Larval and adult weevils were not attractive for parasitoid females, whereas, for the white clover weevil-plant association, infested flowers were highly attractive. These data show the use by the clover weevil parasitoid of an alternative source of olfactory information for locating its host.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide gas production in maize, mixed with 0, 5 or 10% broken corn and foreign material (BCFM), and 0 or 100 adult maize weevils at 13, 16 or 19% moisture content (mc) was studied in 1.8 liter thermos containers which were held at 26.6°C and 60±5% r.h. for 80 days. CO2 was measured at 7 day intervals using an infrared gas analyzer. At 13 or 16% mc, higher CO2 production was measured in infested maize than in uninfested maize, and BCFM did not significantly affect CO2 production. At 19% mc, CO2 production was greatly increased regardless of the presence of insects and BCFM. CO2 produced over 12 weeks was 110–166g/kg. The number of live maige weevils after 80 days was 538 in 13% mc, 344 in 16% mc and 48 in the 19% mc Therefore, respiration of fungi such as Aspergillus glaucus, Aspergillus candidus and Aspergillus terreus other than that of insects appeared to more greatly influence CO2 production than did the insects at 19% mc The moisture content and presence of maize weevils were major factors affecting respiration during storage, but level of BCFM did not significantly affect CO2 production. The CO2 produced over 12 weeks was 135–147 g/kg in infested maize at 13% and 136–144 g/kg at 16% mc.  相似文献

Plant diversity is known to affect success of host location by pest insects, but its effect on olfactory orientation of non-pest insect species has hardly been addressed. First, we tested in laboratory experiments the hypothesis that non-host plants, which increase odour complexity in habitats, affect the host location ability of herbivores and parasitoids. Furthermore, we recorded field data of plant diversity in addition to herbivore and parasitoid abundance at 77 grassland sites in three different regions in Germany in order to elucidate whether our laboratory results reflect the field situation. As a model system we used the herb Plantago lanceolata, the herbivorous weevil Mecinus pascuorum, and its larval parasitoid Mesopolobus incultus. The laboratory bioassays revealed that both the herbivorous weevil and its larval parasitoid can locate their host plant and host via olfactory cues even in the presence of non-host odour. In a newly established two-circle olfactometer, the weeviĺs capability to detect host plant odour was not affected by odours from non-host plants. However, addition of non-host plant odours to host plant odour enhanced the weeviĺs foraging activity. The parasitoid was attracted by a combination of host plant and host volatiles in both the absence and presence of non-host plant volatiles in a Y-tube olfactometer. In dual choice tests the parasitoid preferred the blend of host plant and host volatiles over its combination with non-host plant volatiles. In the field, no indication was found that high plant diversity disturbs host (plant) location by the weevil and its parasitoid. In contrast, plant diversity was positively correlated with weevil abundance, whereas parasitoid abundance was independent of plant diversity. Therefore, we conclude that weevils and parasitoids showed the sensory capacity to successfully cope with complex vegetation odours when searching for hosts.  相似文献

Basil oil, Ocimum basilicum L., is a volatile plant essential oil that is known to have insecticidal activity against stored product pests such as rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.). Basil oil was diluted in acetone and applied to a sponge held inside a tea strainer for fumigations in containers with and without rice. Basil oil fumigation (3 ml, 10% concentration) caused high mortality in adult rice weevils when weevils were exposed in air in a sealed 1 L plastic container. However, when basil oil was placed in packaged rice, weevil mortality was low and reproduction was not affected. Effectiveness of plant essential oil fumigation should be conducted under realistic conditions to avoid experimental artifacts and misleading results.  相似文献

The palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), was collected in cocoons from red ring-diseased coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in Trinidad and Tobago. Juveniles of five species of nematodes were extracted from the genitalia and macerated bodies of newly emerged adults of the palm weevil: Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus (Cobb) Goodey (the red ring nematode), Teratorhabditis sp., Diplogasteritus sp., Mononchoides sp., and Bursaphelenchus sp. Over 90% of newly emerged weevil females and males were infested internally with red ring nematode juveniles, and over 47% of the weevils contained more than 1,000 red ring nematodes each. There was no significant correlation between weevil body length and the number of red ring nematodes carried internally by each weevil. Teratorhabditis sp. and Diplogasteritus sp. were extracted from over 50% of the palm weevils, and Monochoides sp. and Bursaphelenchus sp. were found in a small proportion of the weevils. Field-collected adult weevils were also internally and externally infested with a Rhabditis sp., which was not observed in or on weevils allowed to emerge from field-collected cocoons.  相似文献

The cold hardiness of two closely related weevil species, Exapion ulicis and E. lemovicinum was studied in relation to their life cycles. These two seed-eating weevils reproduce on Ulex plant species with different fruiting phenologies. E. ulicis lays eggs in spring and overwinters as an adult while E. lemovicinum lays eggs in autumn and overwinters as a larva. Adult weevils were collected in natural populations of Brittany (Western France) and characterized with morphological and molecular tools before experiments. We showed that both weevil species exhibited low supercooling points (SCPs) with mean seasonal values below −17 °C. Fresh mass, moisture content and sex were not correlated to supercooling ability. Weevils died upon freezing and the lower lethal temperatures (LLT) were within the range of SCP, indicating that both species are freezing intolerant. Comparison between species for SCP, LLT and survival to exposure at −8 °C in winter showed a higher cold resistance for E. ulicis than for E. lemovicinum. In addition, the seasonal evolution of cold hardiness differed depending on the species. These features suggest that response to cold of weevils is linked to their life cycles, and thus to the life history of their host plants.  相似文献

The paper describes laboratory tests in which the behavior response of adult rice weevils Sitophilus oryzae L. to the presence of seven species of micromycetes of the genus Fusarium (F. graminearum, F. culmorum, F. cerealis, F. poae, F. sporotrichioides, F. langsethiae, and F. sibiricum; 3 strains for each species) infecting cereals was characterized. The chemicals of unkown structure, released by the fungi, can have both attractive and repellent effects on the weevils; in some cases a neutral response was observed. The strains of Fusarium species characterized as weak pathogens (F. langsethiae, F. poae, and F. sibiricum) in most cases stimulated attractive and neutral responses. Relatively strong pathogens (F. cerealis, F. culmorum, F. graminearum, and F. sporotrichioides) generally had a repellent effect. The results obtained are discussed in the context of possible relationships between Fusarium fungi and the rice weevil during their utilization of cereals as a shared food substrate.  相似文献

Microctonus aethiopoides Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was introduced from Morocco to Australia and New Zealand for biological control of the lucerne pest, Sitona discoideus. Previous research has indicated that M. aethiopoides intraspecific genetic variation is more strongly associated with weevil host species than geographic origin. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences from parasitoids dissected from weevils collected during a survey of lucerne-growing areas in Morocco allowed us to further test this hypothesis. As found previously, there were two strong clades in M. aethiopoides with no geographical basis to this structure. Earlier research suggested that intraspecific variability within M. aethiopoides was related to weevil host genus (Sitona vs. Hypera), and the analysis confirmed that one of the clades corresponded strongly with the host Sitona discoideus. The other clade, however, previously characterised by parasitoids from Hypera postica also included parasitoids dissected from Charagmus spp., which is a sister genus to Sitona. It is suggested that food plant associations of the host weevils might have had an influence on the evolutionary history of the parasitoid.  相似文献

The parasitoid Lariophagus distinguendus Förster (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is a promising candidate for biological control of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in grain stores. For practical application in northern temperate regions it is important that the parasitoids can survive the cold temperatures in the grain during the winter and resume activity the following spring. In the present study the survival of Lariophagus distinguendus and Sitophilus granarius was followed during a simulated winter with stepwise reductions of temperature down to 6°C which was maintained for 15 weeks. Only 20% of the weevils were alive after eight weeks at 6°C, whereas the survival of L. distinguendus was unaffected by the temperature decrease. After being returned to room temperature an F 1 generation of the parasitoid emerged and was able to reproduce.  相似文献

During experiments to determine the impact of the introduced parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the Argentine stem weevil Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) (Col.: Curculionidae), it was discovered that weevils frequently died prior to development of the parasitoid. It was postulated that this premature mortality could be caused by an ingress of pathogens in the puncture wounds created during parasitoid oviposition. This hypothesis was tested using the pathogenic bacterium Serratia marcescens Bizio as a model indicator of bacterial transmission by the parasitoid. When the bacteria were injected with a pin, simulating parasitoid attack, 92% of weevils died. Weevils exposed to parasitoids contaminated with bacteria suffered significantly higher mortality than those exposed to parasitoids untreated with bacteria. W hen parasitoids and weevils were confined in Petri dishes on filter paper contaminated with S. marcescens , there was significantly higher weevil mortality than in dishes without bacteria. The treatment of weevils, using the pin injection method, with bacteria isolated from weevils and soil ( Serratia spp., Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas fluorescens (Trevisan)), produced similar levels of weevil mortality to the test strain. These results strongly suggest that parasitoid-mediated transmission of bacteria causing rapid death of the host can act as a significant mortality factor in biological control programmes, and should be considered in their interpretation.  相似文献

The impact of a herbicide-tolerant rice, Oryza sativa L., variety was assessed for its resistance to rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and its place in current integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the resistance of a glufosinate-tolerant rice variety and its glufosinate-susceptible parent line Bengal to the rice water weevil in the presence and absence of glufosinate applications. The LC50 dose-response and behavioral effects of glufosinate on adult rice water weevils also were studied. Field studies investigated the impacts of glufosinate-tolerant rice on rice water weevil management in the presence and absence of glufosinate under early and delayed flood conditions. Greenhouse studies demonstrated that in the absence of glufosinate, oviposition was 30% higher on the glufosinate-tolerant rice line than on Bengal rice or on glufosinate-tolerant line treated with recommended rates of commercially formulated glufosinate. Applications of glufosinate to glufosinate-tolerant rice resulted in a 20% reduction in rice water weevil larval densities compared with nontreated glufosinate-tolerant rice. The LC50 of glufosinate against adult rice water weevil was nearly 2 times the concentration recommended for application to glufosinate-tolerant rice. There was no difference in the amount of leaf area consumed by adult rice water weevils on glufosinate-treated and nontreated foliage. The absence of direct toxicity of glufosinate to rice water weevil at recommended glufosinate use rates and lack of behavioral effects suggest that the reduction in rice water weevil densities observed after glufosinate applications resulted from herbicide-induced plant resistance. Field experiments showed that neither rice variety nor herbicide use affected larval densities; however, delaying flood and applying insecticide effectively reduced numbers of rice water weevil larvae.  相似文献

Thirty four samples of rice bran, of which 9 were from raw (untreated) rice (RR) and 25 from parboiled rice (PbR) were collected from commercial rice mills in and around Madras and analysed for storage mycoflora and mycotoxins. Fungi of the Aspergillus flavus group were present in 29 of the 34 samples (8 from RR and 21 from PbR) in quantities ranging from <1–432 thousand propagules/g, though not always as the dominant mycoflora. Fungal numbers were usually higher in RR than in PbR samples.Five of the 9 RR samples and 6 of the 25 PbR samples were positive for aflatoxins. Among 29 isolates of A. flavus obtained from the bran samples, 16 isolates –6 from RR bran and 10 from PbR bran — were found to be toxigenic in vitro. Some isolates of A. candidus also seemed to produce aflatoxin and other fluorescent substances.  相似文献

During the first half of the twentieth century, two accidental cases of introduction of Pissodes weevils were recorded from the southern hemisphere. The weevils in South Africa were identified as the deodar weevil (Pissodes nemorensis) and those in South America as the small banded pine weevil (Pissodes castaneus). Wide distribution of the two species in their invasive range, general difficulty in identifying some Pissodes spp., and the varying feeding and breeding behaviours of the species in South Africa has necessitated better evidence of species identity and genetic diversity of both species and population structure of the species in South Africa. Barcoding and the Jerry-to-Pat region of the COI gene were investigated. Morphometric data of the South African species was analysed. Our results confirmed the introduction of only one Pissodes species of North American origin to South Africa. However, this species is not P. nemorensis, but an unrecognized species of the P. strobi complex or a hybrid between P. strobi and P. nemorensis. Only P. castaneus, of European origin, was identified from South America. We identified ten mitochondrial DNA haplotypes from South Africa with evidence of moderate genetic structure among geographic populations. Terminal leader and bole-feeding weevils did not differ at the COI locus. A single haplotype was identified from populations of P. castaneus in South America. Results of the present study will have implications on quarantine, research and management of these insect species.  相似文献

The exotic orchid, Spathoglottis plicata, has naturalized and spread rapidly over Puerto Rico where it is generally considered to be innocuous. It is abundant and occupies the same habitat as the native orchid, Bletia patula. The two are hosts to the same native weevil, Stethobaris polita, a specialist on orchid flowers. We ask whether the weevils mediate apparent competition between the two orchids. We monitored weevil populations, floral damage and fruit set in B. patula in the presence and absence of S. plicata. We also experimentally tested whether weevils preferred one species over the other. Finally, we modeled the distribution of both orchid species to predict the extent by which the two species may interact in Puerto Rico. We found a significantly lower number of weevils and a higher fruit set for B. patula where S. plicata is absent, indicative that apparent competition is occurring. The choice experiments show that weevils prefer flowers of S. plicata over those of B. patula, but B. patula still sustained considerable damage. The current distribution of the native B. patula is nearly limited to the northern karst region of Puerto Rico. The naturalized S. plicata has a broader range and the models predict that its distribution will strongly overlap with that of B. patula. We expect the S. plicata invasion to continue and affect native orchids through apparent competition as long as the presence of S. plicata maintains elevated weevil populations. Thus, even seemingly harmless invasive orchids can have subtle but significant negative consequences.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were carried out to determine the functional response of the parasitoid, Pteromalus cerealellae (Boucek) to cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) hosts, and the relationship between parasitism and cowpea variety susceptibility to the weevil. The attack response of P. cerealella to weevil larvae was best described by a type III functional response using an egg limitation model. The mean attack rate (a) of the parasitoid was estimated as 1.7 and the upper limit of the response was 24 weevil larvae per individual parasitoid within a 48-h period. The results also showed that cowpea varieties resistant to weevil infestation supported fewer weevil progeny and facilitated a greater suppression of the weevil by the parasitoid. The parasitoid progeny index, a measure that compares the number of the parasitoid progeny to the number of the beetle progeny was higher in cowpea weevil resistant varieties than in susceptible varieties. Additionally, the presence of P. cerealellae resulted in reduced weight losses of cowpea caused by the weevil infestation in both susceptible and resistant varieties.  相似文献

Plant age‐ and plant stage‐related changes in the resistance of rice, Oryza sativa, to its most important insect pest in the US, the rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus), were investigated in a series of field and greenhouse choice and no‐choice studies. Rice plants were susceptible to infestation by rice water weevils over a broad range of plant ontogenetic stages, from at least the early vegetative stage to well into the reproductive stage. There was, however, a clear preference expressed by rice water weevils in both choice and no‐choice experiments for plants in (or nearly in) the tillering stage of development, with pre‐tillering and reproductive stage plants less preferred. The relationship between rice plant age and susceptibility to weevils is thus nonlinear. This study constitutes one of the most thorough studies to date of the relationship in a grass species between plant age and susceptibility to herbivores. The results provide a biological explanation for observed patterns of weevil infestations and a rationale for the cultural practice of delayed flooding.  相似文献
