  1. The exchanges of water between lactating female and young Mus musculus were modelled on the computer.

A geometrical model of the emergence of a primordium at the shoot apex in dicotyledons is proposed. It is based on recent fundamental results on plant morphogenesis, i.e.:
  1. the emergence is preceded by the reorganization of the microtubules of the cortical cytoskeleton, leading to a new orientation of the synthesis of the cell wall microfibrils;
  2. the resulting global stress is related to the general orientation of the cell growth.
So the model sums up the continuous interactions linking the microtubules, the microfibrils and the cell growth axis. This paper tries to answer three questions which are essential from a botanical point of view:
  1. Why does the principal stem shift its growth direction after each lateral emergence?
  2. Why do the three axes involved in any ramification (namely the old and the new principal stems and the lateral emergence) exhibit a plane configuration whereas this is an essentially three dimensional phenomenon?
  3. Does phyllotaxis exclusively depend upon the local emergence of a primordium?
A come and go between the botanical knowledge and the mathematical model leads to an integrated view of the compatibility mechanisms linking the different microtubules and microfibrils networks, without forgetting the apical dome restoration. A geometrical formalism allows a modern redefinition of both the “generating centre” and the “organizing centre” and their field effects.  相似文献

The following scheme lists the problems which have been and will continue to be encountered in grazing experiments on natural particle assemblages. In some cases there are solutions, but many of the problems listed below remain intractable. To solve them will require innovative approaches, most probably combining the use of particle counters with other techniques to approach the problem to be solved from several angles at once.   • - statistical causes (especially caused by large particles) and
  • - differences between experimental bottles and between experimentals and controls at start of experiment. Shifts in particle distribution during experiment due to

    1. The seasonal variation in the water, protein, fat and glycogen contents of the mussel, Mytilus viridis has been studied for the year March, 1974 to March, 1975.
    2. The water level increased during the monsoon season and decreased in summer.
    3. The level of protein, fat and glycogen showed correlation with the reproductive cycle of the mussel.
    4. The protein level was high when the mussels were mature and dropped during the breeding period.
    5. During sex change from male to female in May the protein level remained high whereas during sex change from female to male in October and November it was low.

    We provide data on several aspects of sexual behaviour: masturbation, age at first intercourse, sexual practices during first intercourse, homosexuality and heterosexuality, sexual practices over a lifetime, sexual activity in the past twelve months, frequency of sexual intercourse, last sexual intercourse, achieving orgasm (through vaginal penetration, masturbation by partners, fellatio and cunnilingus), sexual dysfunctions. Data come from recent national sex surveys in: Great Britain (1990–91; n=18.876), Finland (1991–92; n=2250), the United States (1992; n="3432) and especially from the ACSF survey (n=20.055), the French national telephone survey on sexual behaviour conducted between September 1991 and February 1992. Some results about the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions in sexually active men 18 to 69 years old, in France (in %):
  • - “You do not have an erection (impotence)”
  • - “often”: 7%, “sometimes”: 12%
  • -“You ejaculate too early, even before entering you partner” “often”: 5%; “sometimes”: 16%

    1. Growth of the floating aquatic weed, Salvinia, in sterile culture was exponential for at least 2 weeks under standardized conditions.
    2. Increase in light intensity or in CO2 resulted in increases in growth rate, but did not extend the exponential period of growth.
    3. This aquatic plant, like many others, discriminates against calcium relative to strontium.
    4. In culture Salvinia exhibited luxury consumption of N and P.
    5. Because of high C/N ratios, Salvinia may not be a favorable source of animal food, but might be useful in nutrient removal schemes.

    Antioxidant enzymes together with trace elements in 26 patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis and 25 healthy subjects were investigated. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) in plasma and erythrocytes were examined immediately before and after hemodialysis. The results are summarized as follows:
    1. A significant decrease in plasma SOD, CAT, and GSHPx and erythrocyte GSHPx were found in patients before hemodialysis.
    2. Erythrocyte CAT and GSHPx were significantly lower in the patients after hemodialysis than in the controls.
    3. Plasma GSHPx was significantly higher after a single hemodialysis than before hemodialysis.
    4. A good correlation between erythrocyte SOD and copper (Cu) in patients before hemodialysis was found.
    5. A good correlation of GSHPx in erythrocytes and plasma was found before hemodialysis, whereas an even better correlation was found after hemodialysis.
    6. Abnormalities of trace elements were found in hamodialyzed patients.
    7. There is indirect evidence for increased oxidizing stress in uremic patients with hemodialysis. Dialysis treatment may improve some abnormalities (e.g., Hb, P), but may also induce some deleterious effects of free radicals or lipid peroxidation.

    1. Thioglycolic acid, a Cu-chelating agent, totally inhibited extracellular laccase activity without affecting growth and morphology of Fomes annosus.
    2. In the presence of thioglycolic acid Fomes annosus cleaved high molecular weight lignosulfonate with a molecular weight range of 2×106 to 1000. In the absence of thioglycolic acid the polymerizing activity of laccase prevented the detection of lignosulfonate breakdown products.
    3. Oxidative polymerization of a lignin monomer, coniferyl alcohol, occurred in the presence but not in the absence of laccase activity.
    4. Catechol and guaiacol added to the medium at a concentration of 2 mmol, are normally oxidized by fungal laccase and strongly inhibit growth. Presence of thioglycolic acid prevented the oxidation of these phenols and simultaneously permitted normal growth.

    The site of anaerobic respiration in the latex is the serum. The main respiratory substrate is fructose. The CO2 formation in serum is increased by additional fructose on the average about 2.5–3 times. Glucose does not influence CO2 evolution by serum but slightly increases O2 consumption. With respect to sugars, latex serum contains essentially only sucrose and a low amount of raffinose. During the incubation of serum sucrose is hydrolysed, the fructose component is immediately utilized in respiration and glucose accumulates. The rate of CO2 formation in latex as influenced by fructose is negatively related to the rubber content of the latex. Latex with a high rubber content reacts only slightly or not at all on additional fructose. The main limiting factors of latex respiration and sugar utilization are the following:
    1. The deficiency of substrate, due to low activity of β-fructofuranosidase.
    2. The rate of glucose phosphorylation (D'Auzac, Jacob 1967).
    3. Presumably the low activity of phosphoglucoisomerase.
    4. The rubber content of the latex.
    5. The concentration of CO2 in latex; this factor may be important in vivo, in the laticiferous system.

    The mechanical properties of broad-leaf tree species in a maritime-wind exposed habitat in central Japan were examined. The broad-leaf trees studied were Celtis sinensis var. japonica, Ilex integra, Eurya japonica, Pittosporum tobira, Euonymus japonicus and Cinnamomum japonicum. The results obtained can be summarized briefly as follows:
    1. At places with weaker wind, the number of species increased and the height of the canopy increased.
    2. The fracture strength σm showed no dependence on tree part or branch thickness, but was constant.
    3. The order of strength was Celtis sinensis var. japonica > Ilex integra > Eurya japonica > Pittosporum tobira > Euonymus japonicus > Cinnamomum japonicum, and these six species could best adapt to the wind pressure in the study area.
    4. Within species, fracture strength varied directly with wind strength.
    5. The strain εm decreased as the trunk became thicker.
    6. Within species, strain energy Um varied directly with wind strength.

    Androgenic hormones seem to be of beneficial effects on sports performance:

    1. A method for the direct recording of the PEP efflux from isolated mitochondria is described.
    2. This method has been used to show the stimulation of PEP efflux by externally added Mn++ ions.
    3. Valinomycin, uncoupler and oleate were also shown to stimulate PEP efflux.
    4. Valinomycin caused an increase in the internal concentration of both PEP and citrate.

    1. The chimpanzee vocal system is an emotionally linked vocal response developed on a standard pre-symbolic primate system.
    2. Differences in number of sounds recorded by different observers may be due to personal choice, or due actual presence or absence of certain sound types in different living situations. Further research is needed in this case before comparisons can be made.
    3. Idiosyncratic use of certain signals may serve as a basis for growth of local dialects in different areas. Spread of such dialects may be related to the amount of respect accorded to dominant animals. More study may shed light on the growth and development of pre-symbolic systems.

    Introduction

    Anejaculation is the inability to ejaculate through the urethral meatus despite the presence of adequate erection and sexual stimulation.

    Material and Methods

    From January 1997 to July 2002, 72 patients (age: 17 to 72 years, mean age: 43 years, 65% under the age of 50) consulted the same urologist because of anejaculation.

    Results

    Forty seven patients (65%) were unable to achieve orgasm (anorgasmia). Twenty five patients were able to achieve orgasm: retrograde ejaculation (9 cases) or dry ejaculation (7 cases) (depending on the presence or absence spermatozoa in the urine after orgasm), indeterminate anejaculation (7 cases) and sluggish ejaculation (2 cases). Psychological risk factors were detected in 30 patients (42%), neurological risk factors were detected in 34 patients (47%) (especially peripheral neuropathy after pelvic or retroperitoneal surgery or diabetes mellitus) and pharmacological risk factors were detected in 16 patients (22%) (especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Men with anorgasmia presented psychological risk factors in 57% of cases, neurological risk factors in 36% of cases and pharmacological risk factors in 34% of cases. The percentages of these risk factors in patients with other forms of anejaculation were 12%, 68% and 0%, respectively. Twenty five patients (35%) presented several risk factors with a psychological predominance in 14 of them. No risk factors were detected in 11 patients (5 with retrograde ejaculation and 6 with anorgasmia), but a psychological aetiology appeared likely in 6 patients with anorgasmia, as they were able to achieve orgasm during masturbation. 70% of cases of anorgasmia therefore presented psychological risk factors or aetiologies (primary anorgasmia: 100%, secondary anorgasmia: 63%) versus 12% of patients with other forms of anejaculation.

    Conclusion

    1. The diagnosis of anejaculation must include the type of anejaculation.
    2. The aetiological diagnosis is based on clinical interview.
    3. Risk factors and aetiologies are often psychological, but sometimes neurological or pharmacological in patients with anorgasmia, and often neurological in other forms of anejaculation.
    4. The term “psychological anejaculation” should be reserved for cases of primary anorgasmia.
    5. Anorgasmia requires psychological assessment.

    A theory is presented, describing the control analysis of metabolic systems in terms of Gibbs free energies, extending earlier work of Kacser and Burns (25), and Heinrich and Rapoport (29). It is shown that relationships exist between flux control coefficients (the degree to which enzymes control steady-state fluxes) and free-energy elasticity coefficients, defined as the fractional change in the rate of a reaction induced by a standard change in one free-energy difference, while all the other free-energy differences are kept constant. Application of this extended control analysis to some biochemical reactions, including proton translocation, demonstrates that
    1. Problems arising in the control analysis because of conservation (sum concentration of substrate and product constant) can be circumvented.
    2. Although free-energy elasticity coefficients are maximal when the reaction is close to equilibrium, they can also be significant when the reaction is not close to equilibrium.
    3. Problems in the control analysis caused by compartmentation can be resolved by defining control parameters that refer to the organelle as a whole.
    4. These latter control parameters obey the above-mentioned relationships.

    We combined fluorescence labeling, digital image processing, and micromanipulation to investigate the intracellular events induced by inflicting a mechanical stress on rat basophilic leukemia cells. Our findings were as follows:
    1. Most cells displayed a localized calcium rise in response to micropipet aspiration. This represented an average threefold increase as compared to resting level, and it was observed during the first 10 s following aspiration. A slow return to initial level occurred within about 3 min. Further, this calcium rise involved a mobilization of intracellular stores, since it was not prevented by adding a calcium chelator into the extracellular medium.
    2. All micropipet-aspirated cells displayed a local accumulation of microfilaments, with a preferential localization in the cell protrusions or near the pipet tips.
    3. No absolute correlation was found between the localization of calcium rise and cytoskeletal accumulation.
    4. Cell deformability was decreased when intracellular calcium was maintained at a constant (high or low) level with ionomycin and/or EGTA.
    It is concluded that cells have a general ability to respond to mechanical stimulation by a coordinated set of events. More parameters must be studied before the mechanisms of cell shape regulation are fully understood.  相似文献
