Research on the scope and limits of non-conscious vision can advance our understanding of the functional and neural underpinnings of visual awareness. Here we investigated whether distributed local features can be bound, outside of awareness, into coherent patterns. We used continuous flash suppression (CFS) to create interocular suppression, and thus lack of awareness, for a moving dot stimulus that varied in terms of coherence with an overall pattern (radial flow). Our results demonstrate that for radial motion, coherence favors the detection of patterns of moving dots even under interocular suppression. Coherence caused dots to break through the masks more often: this indicates that the visual system was able to integrate low-level motion signals into a coherent pattern outside of visual awareness. In contrast, in an experiment using meaningful or scrambled biological motion we did not observe any increase in the sensitivity of detection for meaningful patterns. Overall, our results are in agreement with previous studies on face processing and with the hypothesis that certain features are spatiotemporally bound into coherent patterns even outside of attention or awareness. 相似文献

Cueing attention after the disappearance of visual stimuli biases which items will be remembered best. This observation has historically been attributed to the influence of attention on memory as opposed to subjective visual experience. We recently challenged this view by showing that cueing attention after the stimulus can improve the perception of a single Gabor patch at threshold levels of contrast. Here, we test whether this retro-perception actually increases the frequency of consciously perceiving the stimulus, or simply allows for a more precise recall of its features. We used retro-cues in an orientation-matching task and performed mixture-model analysis to independently estimate the proportion of guesses and the precision of non-guess responses. We find that the improvements in performance conferred by retrospective attention are overwhelmingly determined by a reduction in the proportion of guesses, providing strong evidence that attracting attention to the target’s location after its disappearance increases the likelihood of perceiving it consciously. 相似文献

The identification of significant individual factors causing complex diseases is challenging in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) since each factor has only a modest effect on the disease development mechanism. In this study, we hypothesize that the biological pathways that are targeted by these individual factors show higher conservation within and across populations. To test this hypothesis, we searched for the disease related pathways on two intracranial aneurysm GWAS in European and Japanese case–control cohorts. Even though there were a few significantly conserved SNPs within and between populations, seven of the top ten affected pathways were found significant in both populations. The probability of random occurrence of such an event is 2.44E−36. We therefore claim that even though each individual has a unique combination of factors involved in the mechanism of disease development, most targeted pathways that need to be altered by these factors are, for the most part, the same. These pathways can serve as disease markers. Individuals, for example, can be scanned for factors affecting the genes in marker pathways. Hence, individual factors of disease development can be determined; and this knowledge can be exploited for drug development and personalized therapeutic applications. Here, we discuss the potential avenues of pathway markers in medicine and their translation to preventive and individualized health care. 相似文献

The idea that memory is not a single mental faculty has a long and interesting history but became a topic of experimental and biologic inquiry only in the mid-20th century. It is now clear that there are different kinds of memory, which are supported by different brain systems. One major distinction can be drawn between working memory and long-term memory. Long-term memory can be separated into declarative (explicit) memory and a collection of nondeclarative (implicit) forms of memory that include habits, skills, priming, and simple forms of conditioning. These memory systems depend variously on the hippocampus and related structures in the parahippocampal gyrus, as well as on the amygdala, the striatum, cerebellum, and the neocortex. This work recounts the discovery of declarative and nondeclarative memory and then describes the nature of declarative memory, working memory, nondeclarative memory, and the relationship between memory systems. The idea that memory is not a single faculty has a long history. In his Principles of Psychology, William James (1890) wrote separate chapters on memory and habit. Bergson (1910) similarly distinguished between a kind of memory that represents our past and memory that is not representational but nevertheless allows the effect of the past to persist into the present. One finds other antecedents as well. McDougall (1923) wrote about explicit and implicit recognition memory, and Tolman (1948) proposed that there is more than one kind of learning. These early proposals were often expressed as a dichotomy involving two forms of memory. The terminologies differed, but the ideas were similar. Thus, Ryle (1949) distinguished between knowing how and knowing that, and Bruner (1969) identified memory without record and memory with record. Later, the artificial intelligence literature introduced a distinction between declarative and procedural knowledge (Winograd 1975). Yet constructs founded in philosophy and psychology are often abstract and have an uncertain connection to biology, that is, to how the brain actually stores information. History shows that as biological information becomes available about structure and function, understanding becomes more concrete and less dependent on terminology. 相似文献

The availability of high-throughput genomic databases that establish protein dispensability, expression and interaction networks enables rigorous tests of competing models of protein evolution. Recent research utilizing these new data sets shows that protein evolution is more complex than was previously thought. Several variables, including protein dispensability, expression, functional density, and genetic modularity, appear to have independent effects on the evolutionary rate of proteins, suggesting that proteomes have evolved via an assembly of selectional regimes. These results indicate that a general model of protein evolution will emerge as more functional genomic data from a diversity of organisms accumulate. 相似文献
