Background and aim

Significant differences in tree growth were observed in an exotic pine plantation under different harvest residue management regimes at ages 2–10 years. However, the variations in tree growth between residue management treatments could not be explained by soil and foliar nutrient analyses, except by potassium (K) concentration. Therefore, this study determined the carbon isotope composition (δ13C) and oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of current and archived foliar samples from the exotic pine plantation to establish relationships with foliar K concentration and tree growth indices as a means to determine changes in stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic rate (Amax) or water use efficiency (WUE), and therefore understand the variations in tree growth across treatments.

Methods

The harvest residue treatments were: (1) residue removal, RR0; (2) single level residue retention, RR1; and (3) double level residue retention, RR2. Foliar δ13C and δ18O were determined for samples at ages 2, 4, 6 and 10 years, and the atmospheric 13C discrimination (Δ13C), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and WUE were determined from the δ13C data. Litter needle δ13C and δ18O were also determined over 15 months between ages 9 and 10 years. These parameters or variables where correlated to each other as well as to the periodic mean annual increment of basal area (PAIB) and the periodic mean annual increment of tree diameter at breast height (PAID) across the treatments and over time. Foliar δ13C and δ18O were also related to published data of foliar K concentrations of the same trees.

Results

Significant variations of foliar δ13C, and therefore WUE and Δ13C, across treatments were only observed at ages 4 and 10 years old, and foliar δ18O at age 4 years old only. The results showed increasing foliar δ13C, δ18O and WUE, and decreasing Δ13C and Ci, from RR0 to RR2 treatments. However, while the WUE was positively related to the PAID and PAIB at age 4 years, it was negatively related to PAID and PAIB at age 10 years old. Litter needle δ13C, indicative of WUE, was also negatively related to the PAID at age 10 years old. . At age 4 years, foliar δ13C and δ18O were positively related with a steep slope of 7.70 ‰ across treatments, and that both isotopes were positively related to foliar K concentrations. Similarly, δ18O was negatively related to the Δ13C. No significant relationship can be determined between foliar δ13C, or Δ13C, and δ18O at age 10 years old. In addition, WUE was increasing (p?<?0.001) and Δ13C and Ci decreasing (p?<?0.001) with decreasing PAID over time.

Conclusions

The variations at age 4 years in foliar δ13C or Δ13C and δ18O and increasing WUE with increasing growth rate suggest growth induced water-stress with increasing residue-loading rate as a result of the nutritional effect of the harvest residues on tree growth. At age 10 years, the negative relationships between WUE and PAID indicate nutrient limitation has an over-riding effect on δ13C variations rather than gs. This was due to the lack of a significant relationship between foliar Δ13C and δ18O at this age, as well as over time.

Background and aims

Across the world, about 264 million ha forest plantations are monospecific. This practice has been found to cause site productivity and soil fertility decline in the regions where forests have been harvested several times. To mitigate these problems, mixed-species plantations, especially with broadleaved and coniferous species, are preferred. Understanding the effects of introducing broadleaved tree in monospecific coniferous plantation on ecosystem carbon (C) storage and soil organic C (SOC) stability is critical to improve our understanding of forest C sequestration and C cycle.

Methods

Plots were established in subtropical plantations with a randomized block design to examine the influence of introducing Michelia macclurei trees into pure Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation on biomass C storage, SOC storage of total, labile, and recalcitrant fractions (0–40 cm depth), and SOC stability.

Results

Introducing M. macclurei trees increased biomass C by 17.9 % and 14.2 % compared with monospecific C. lanceolata and M. macclurei plantations, respectively. Storage of different SOC fractions was not significantly different between monospecific C. lanceolata and mixed plantations. SOC stability in bulk soils was not affected, although it differed in 10–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil depth among three plantations.

Conclusions

Mixed species plantations can increase C sequestration, and in the subtropical forest ecosystem examined this was mainly attributed to an increase in biomass C.

Aims

Tropical plantations are likely to supply a growing share of the increasing world demand for forest products. We aimed to gain insight into the role of the nitrogen (N) contained in harvest residues (HR) for tree growth and soil N stocks.

Methods

We used 15N-labeled harvest residues to (1) study the dynamic of N release throughout decomposition, (2) determine the vertical transport pathways of N from the forest floor to the upper soil layers, and (3) quantifying the contributions of HR to soil N stocks and the supply of N to young Eucalyptus trees.

Results

Almost all of the 15N initially contained in the HR was recovered 27 months after deposition, with 21 % remaining in HR, 38 % being transferred to the underlying O layer, 21 % being transferred to the 0–15 cm soil layer, and approximately 15 % accumulating in the tree biomass. Our results supported the presence of two pathways of N transfers from the O layer to the mineral soil: (1) the leaching of dissolved 15N from fresh litter during the first year after planting which actively contributed to Eucalyptus N nutrition and (2) the transport of particulate organic matter in percolating water which contributed to maintain N stocks in the first 15 cm of the soil. Approximately 40 % of the N content in 2-year-old Eucalyptus trees was derived from the labeled HR.

Conclusions

The sustainability of fast-growing Eucalyptus trees established on N-poor sandy tropical soils largely relies on organic residues, as an early source of mineral N for tree and as a source of organic N in the top soil.

Background and aims

Tropical and subtropical forests are experiencing high levels of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, but the responses of such forests ecosystems to N deposition remain poorly understood.

Methods

We conducted an 8-year field experiment examining the effect of experimental N deposition on plant growth, soil carbon dioxide efflux, and net ecosystem production (NEP) in a subtropical Chinese fir forest. The quantities of N added were 0 (control), 60, 120, and 240 kg ha?1 year?1.

Results

NEP was lowest under ambient conditions and highest with 240 kg of N ha?1 year?1 treatment. The net increase in ecosystem carbon (C) storage ranged from 9.2 to 16.4 kg C per kg N added in comparison with control. In addition, N deposition treatments significantly decreased heterotrophic respiration (by 0.69–1.85 t C ha?1 year?1) and did not affect plant biomass. The nitrogen concentrations were higher in needles than that in fine roots.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the young Chinese fir forest is carbon source and N deposition would sequester additional atmospheric CO2 at high levels N input, mainly due to reduced soil CO2 emission rather than increased plant growth, and the amount of sequestered C depended on the rate of N deposition.

Purpose

Adoption of the carbon (C)-friendly and cleaner technology is an effective solution to offset some of the anthropogenic emissions. Conservation tillage is widely considered as an important sustainable technology and for the development of conservation agriculture (CA). Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the C sustainability of different tillage systems in a double rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping system in southern China.

Methods

The experiment was established with no-till (NT), rotary tillage (RT), and conventional tillage (CT) treatments since 2005. Emission of greenhouse gasses (GHG), C footprint (CF), and ecosystem service through C sequestration in different tillage systems were compared.

Result and discussion

Emission of GHG from agricultural inputs (Mg CO2-eq ha?1 year?1) ranged from 1.81 to 1.97 for the early rice, 1.82 to 1.98 for the late rice, and 3.63 to 3.95 for the whole growing season, respectively. The CF (kg CO2-eq kg?1 of rice year?1) in the whole growing seasons were 1.27, 1.85, and 1.40 [excluding soil organic carbon (SOC) storage] and 0.54, 1.20, and 0.72 (including SOC storage) for NT, RT, and CT, respectively. The value of ecosystem services on C sequestration for the whole growing seasons ranged from ¥3,353 to 4,948 ha?1 year?1 and followed the order of NT > CT > RT. The C sustainability under NT was better than that under RT for the late, but reversed for the early rice. However, NT system had better C sustainability for the whole cropping system compared with CT.

Conclusions

Therefore, NT is a preferred technology to reduce GHG emissions, increase ecosystem service functions of C sequestration, and improve C sustainability in a double rice cropping region of Southern China.

Aims

The selection of tree characteristics is critical for the outcome of the tree effects on soil fertility in silvopastoral pastures. This study aims to quantify the effects of trees on soil nutrient and C stocks, as well as assessing differences on the effects between legume (Albizia saman; Enterolobium cyclocarpum) and non-legume tree species (Tabebuia rosea; Guazuma ulmifolia).

Methods

In Central Nicaragua, soil was sampled (0–10 cm deep) in paired plots, under both a canopy and in open grassland, in 12 sites per tree species and analysed for organic C, total N stocks, available P and extractable K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. To assess the effects of herbaceous composition and cattle to soil proprieties, we recorded the cover of plant groups and assessed the mass of dung in each plot.

Results

Soil organic C and N, available P and extractable K+ and Ca2+ were higher under the tree canopy than under paired open grassland. The basal area of trees was positively related with the canopy effect on soil variables, thus suggesting that the age or sizes of the trees are relevant factors associated with the content of soil C and nutrients. No specific effects related to the legume species group were detected.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that in fertile seasonally dry subtropical pastures, scattered trees have an overall effect on soil fertility, and that the magnitude of the effect depends more on the tree characteristics (i.e. basal area, crown area) than on whether the species is a legume or not.

Aims

Dehesas are agroforestry systems characterized by scattered trees among pastures, crops and/or fallows. A study at a Spanish dehesa has been carried out to estimate the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stock and to assess the influence of the tree cover.

Methods

The soil organic carbon stock was estimated from the five uppermost cm of the mineral soil with high spatial resolution at two plots with different grazing intensities. The Universal Kriging technique was used to assess the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stocks, using tree coverage within a buffering area as an auxiliary variable.

Results

A significant positive correlation between tree presence and soil organic carbon stocks up to distances of around 8 m from the trees was found. The tree crown cover within a buffer up to a distance similar to the crown radius around the point absorbed 30 % of the variance in the model for both grazing intensities, but residual variance showed stronger spatial autocorrelation under regular grazing conditions.

Conclusions

Tree cover increases soil organic carbon stocks, and can be satisfactorily estimated by means of crown parameters. However, other factors are involved in the spatial pattern of the soil organic carbon distribution. Livestock plays an interactive role together with tree presence in soil organic carbon distribution.

Newer methods of management and harvesting of sugarcane are being considered to improve soil and water conservation in Brazil. Our aim in this study was to evaluate soil C dynamics under sugarcane cultivation as influenced by the use of conservation management, using measurements from four different management systems and land use histories, i.e. conventional management with preharvest burning, no burning with residue retention and two systems without burning plus additional organic amendments. Field sites also differed in terms of soil texture. We compared field measurements of soil C stocks, 13C and microbial biomass with simulated results from the Century ecosystem model for each of the sites and management histories. We also did long-term simulations of the management treatments and sites to approximate steady-state SOC levels, to explore potential management-induced differences in SOC stocks and interactions with soil texture. The model accurately represented treatment and site differences for total SOC stocks, in which SOC stocks were strongly affected by both rates of organic matter input to soil and soil clay content. However, the model tended to underestimate the relative contribution of sugarcane-derived C to total SOC for sites with high residue and external organic matter amendments. Measured microbial biomass C across the sites was closely aligned with relative amounts of organic matter input but did not appear to be strongly affected by soil texture, whereas the model predicted that both texture and organic matter input rate would impact microbial biomass C. Long-term simulations of the conservation management alternatives suggested that SOC stocks could be maintained at or above levels in the original native Cerradão vegetation, whereas conventional practices using residue burning would result in a reduction of SOC to ca. 60% of native levels. Our results support the use of the CENTURY model as an aid to assess the impacts of different soil management practices on SOC stocks under sugarcane in Brazil.

Aims

Maintenance of adequate levels of soil organic carbon (SOC) is crucial for the biological, chemical and physical functioning of soils. This study was conducted (i) to determine the impact of long-term sugarcane monoculture on total SOC stocks and on its labile fractions and (ii) to quantify the loss of original SOC and the accretion of sugarcane-derived C following the adoption of new management practices namely de-rocking/land grading and mechanized harvesting.

Methods

Five study sites representing the five major soil groups under sugarcane in Mauritius were selected with a classical “paired-plot” design adopted. In this design, two sites with similar initial conditions were developed in different ways over time. One represents the reference soil (virgin land with predominantly C3 type vegetation) and the other represents one of the following cropping treatments: (i) fields continuously cultivated with sugarcane for more than 25 or 50 years without de-rocking or land grading, (ii) fields under long-term sugarcane but having undergone de-rocking and land grading for mechanized harvesting in the last 3 years. Soil samples were taken to a depth of 50 cm and analysed for total organic C, labile C, 13C natural abundance, bulk density and stone content.

Results

Changes in SOC stock in the 0–50 cm profile following >50 years of cane cropping were not significant (P?>?0.05) compared to virgin land at any site. Soil δ13C values revealed that long-term sugarcane cultivation resulted in a depletion of original SOC by 34 to 70 %. However, this loss was fully compensated by C input from sugarcane residues at all sites studied resulting in no net change in SOC stock. Adoption of mechanized harvest did not have any detrimental effect on SOC stocks due to C inputs from crop residues. However, long-term sugarcane cultivation resulted in significant decline in a labile C (KMnO4-oxidizable) fraction.

Conclusion

Despite the large losses of original C following conversion from forest to sugarcane, long-term sugarcane cultivation resulted in sequestration of sugarcane-derived C which adequately compensated these losses. Moreover, intensive de-rocking and land grading preceding mechanized harvesting did not have any detrimental effect on SOC stocks. However, the quality of sugarcane soils, as indicated by a decline in labile C, could be degraded.

Aims

Natural disturbances leave long-term legacies that vary among landscapes and ecosystem types, and which become integral parts of successional processes at a given location. As humans change land use, not only are immediate post-disturbance patterns altered, but the processes of recovery themselves are likely altered by the disturbance. We assessed whether short-term effects on soil and vegetation that distinguish wildfire from forest harvest persist over 60 years after disturbance in boreal black spruce forests, or post-disturbance processes of recovery promote convergence of the two disturbance types.

Methods

Using semi-variograms and Principal Coordinates of Neighbour Matrices, we formulated precise, a priori spatial hypotheses to discriminate spatial signatures following wildfire and forest harvest both over the short- (16–18 years) and long-term (62–98 years).

Results

Both over the short- and the long-term, wildfire generated a wide spectrum of responses in soil and vegetation properties at different spatial scales, while logging produced simpler patterns corresponding to the regular linear pattern of harvest trails and to pre-disturbance ericaceous shrub patches that persist between trails.

Conclusions

Disturbance by harvest simplified spatial patterns associated with soil and vegetation properties compared to patterns associated with natural disturbance by fire. The observed differences in these patterns between disturbance types persist for over 60 years. Ecological management strategies inspired by natural disturbances should aim to increase the complexity of patterns associated with harvest interventions.

Background and aims

Shrublands are ecosystems vulnerable to climate changes, with key functions such as carbon storage likely to be affected. In dwarf shrublands dominated by Calluna vulgaris, the aboveground carbon allocation is associated with community age and phase of development. As the Calluna community grows older, a shift to net biomass loss occurs and it was hypothesized this would result in carbon stock increases within the soil.

Methods

The interaction of community age with ecosystem carbon stocks was investigated through a chronosequence study on three Calluna communities, aged 11, 18 and 27 years.

Results

Aboveground Calluna carbon stock increased significantly from the 11 year community (0.73 kg C m?2) to the 18 year community (1.11 kg C m?2) but did not significantly change from 18 to 27 years (1.0 kg C m?2), indicating a net carbon gain that corresponded with the growth phase of the Calluna plants. Moss was also found to be a relatively large contributor to aboveground carbon stock (e.g. 30 % in the Young community). Moss has often been excluded in aboveground assessments on Calluna heathlands which may have led to previous stock underestimation. Belowground carbon stocks to 25 cm were six to nine times greater than in the aboveground pools. For example in the Young community, 8 % of the carbon stock was located aboveground, 35 % in the organic layer and 55 % in the mineral soil.

Conclusions

Increased heathland age resulted in increased aboveground carbon stock until peak production was reached at approximately 18 years of age. However, the proportionally large belowground carbon stock eclipsed any aboveground effect when total carbon stocks were considered. The investigation emphasized both the importance of including the mineral soil in sampling programs and of consider all major species, such as bryophytes, and vegetation age in carbon stock assessments.

Aim

To determine, for arable land in a temperate area, the effect of tree establishment and intercropping treatments, on the distribution of roots and soil organic carbon to a depth of 1.5 m.

Methods

A poplar (Populus sp.) silvoarable agroforestry experiment including arable controls was established on arable land in lowland England in 1992. The trees were intercropped with an arable rotation or bare fallow for the first 11 years, thereafter grass was allowed to establish. Coarse and fine root distributions (to depths of up to 1.5 m and up to 5 m from the trees) were measured in 1996, 2003, and 2011. The amount and type of soil carbon to 1.5 m depth was also measured in 2011.

Results

The trees, initially surrounded by arable crops rather than fallow, had a deeper coarse root distribution with less lateral expansion. In 2011, the combined length of tree and understorey vegetation roots was greater in the agroforestry treatments than the control, at depths below 0.9 m. Between 0 and 1.5 m depth, the fine root carbon in the agroforestry treatment (2.56 t ha-1) was 79% greater than that in the control (1.43 t ha?1). Although the soil organic carbon in the top 0.6 m under the trees (161 t C ha?1) was greater than in the control (142 t C ha?1), a tendency for smaller soil carbon levels beneath the trees at lower depths, meant that there was no overall tree effect when a 1.5 m soil depth was considered. From a limited sample, there was no tree effect on the proportion of recalcitrant soil organic carbon.

Conclusions

The observed decline in soil carbon beneath the trees at soil depths greater than 60 cm, if observed elsewhere, has important implication for assessments of the role of afforestation and agroforestry in sequestering carbon.

Background and aims

Soil mechanical properties are crucial for plant growth, soil erosion, tillage and traffic. The soil mechanical properties and stability of an Ultisol were determined in a 13-year fertilization experiment in subtropical China. The effect of organic matter on soil structure was also evaluated.

Methods

The treatments include: unfertilized, mineral fertilized, mineral mixed with straw, and animal manure. Bulk soil strengths (shear strength and penetration resistance) were tested in field. Aggregate strengths (penetration resistance and tensile strength), water stability, organic carbon (OC), hot-water-extractable carbohydrate (HWEC) and some related factors were determined in laboratory.

Results

Fertilizer increases aggregate penetration resistance, tensile strength, water stability and organic matter content in cultivated horizon (0–15 cm depth), especially at the 0–5 cm layer. OC and HWEC showed significantly regression relationships with aggregate water stability, porosity and water repellency for the whole soil profile (0–40 cm). Aggregate strengths also increased with OC and HWEC in cultivated horizon.

Conclusions

Animal manure is most effective in improving soil structure while aggregate water stability is the most sensitive index of fertilizer management. Soil organic matter is a strong determinant of soil structure. Both OC and HWEC are good indicators of surface aggregate strengths and stability, and thus, soil quality in this region.

Background and aims

Knowledge related to extent of differing soil N forms and N transformation rates in subtropical southern China is severely limited. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate if and how tree species of different foliage types (coniferous, deciduous, and evergreen broadleaved) influence N forms and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) content as well as gross N transformation rates in the organic and mineral soils of three distinct subtropical forests in China.

Methods

Chloroform fumigation extraction was used to determine MBC and MBN content while 15N-isotope dilution techniques were used to measure gross N transformation rates. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to quantify relationships between soil chemical characteristics and changes in soil N transformation rates.

Results

Soil N forms, MBC and MBN content, and N transformation rates were found to be significantly different between tree species. Deciduous forest soil exhibited the highest N transformation rates. Soil N transformation rates were closely associated with total soil C and N and MBC and MBN content.

Conclusions

Soil substrate quantity and soil microbial activity play a more important role in soil N transformation processes than does soil quality in China’s subtropical forests. Tree species type should therefore be taken into account when trying to determine ecosystem N cycling.

Aim

We studied the vertical and lateral root distribution of tree species from three genera (Populus spp. - poplar, Picea spp. - spruce, Salix spp. - willow) that were planted in temperate windbreaks and assessed the effects of soil texture on root density.

Methods

Root distribution to depths of up to 1 m was assessed using the trench-profile method at different distances from the tree rows (2, 6 and 9 m) in 18 mature (average age, 25 years-old) windbreak-sites that were located on light- or heavy-textured agricultural soils in southeastern Québec, Canada. Roots were classified into three diameter classes: fine (<1 mm), medium-size (1–5 mm), and coarse (>5 mm).

Results

Tree fine-root density in poplar and willow windbreaks was higher than in spruce windbreaks at 2 m from the tree row. Root densities were higher in light compared to heavy soils, but these differences were specific to poplar and spruce. Across species groups and soil types, 67 % of the roots occurred in the uppermost 30 cm. In this soil zone, different soil fertility variables (pH, clay content, CEC) were negatively correlated with root density. Densities of spruce and willow roots at 6 m from the tree row were much lower (and often unobserved) than that of poplar. At 9 m, low root densities were observed at only two sites.

Conclusions

We conclude that tree identity and soil type are important drivers of root distribution in temperate agroforestry systems. These results may have important implications for the management of tree competition in agroforestry systems and several ecosystem services that are provided by roots, including C-sequestration, erosion control and water infiltration.

Aims

We analysed current carbon (C) stocks in fine root and aboveground biomass of riparian forests and influential environmental parameters on either side of a dike in the Donau-Auen National Park, Austria.

Methods

On both sides of the dike, carbon (C) stock of fine roots (CFR) under four dominant tree species and of aboveground biomass (CAB) were assessed by topsoil cores (0–30 cm) and angle count sampling method respectively (n?=?48). C stocks were modeled, performing boosted regression trees (BRT).

Results

Overall CFR was 2.8 t ha?1, with significantly higher C stocks in diked (DRF) compared to flooded riparian forests (FRF). In contrast to CFR, mean CAB was 123 t ha?1 and lower in DRF compared to FRF. However, dike construction was consistently ruled out as a predictor variable in BRT. CFR was influenced by the distance to the Danube River and the dominant tree species. CAB was mainly influenced by the magnitude of fluctuations in the groundwater table and the distances to the river and the low groundwater table.

Conclusions

Despite pronounced differences in FRF and DRF, we conclude that there is only weak support that dikes directly influence C allocation in floodplain forests within the time scale considered (110 years).

Background and aims

The impact of understory vegetation control or replacement with selected plant species, which are common forest plantation management practices, on soil C pool and greenhouse gas (GHG, including CO2, CH4 and N2O) emissions are poorly understood. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effects of understory vegetation management on the dynamics of soil GHG emissions and labile C pools in an intensively managed Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima Blume) plantation in subtropical China.

Methods

A 12-month field experiment was conducted to study the dynamics of soil labile C pools and GHG emissions in a Chinese chestnut plantation under four different understory management practices: control (Control), understory removal (UR), replacement of understory vegetation with Medicago sativa L. (MS), and replacement with Lolium perenne L. (LP). Soil GHG emissions were determined using the static chamber/GC technique.

Results

Understory management did not change the seasonal pattern of soil GHG emissions; however, as compared with the Control, the UR treatment increased soil CO2 and N2O emissions and CH4 uptake, and the MS and LP treatments increased CO2 and N2O emissions and reduced CH4 uptake (P?<?0.05 for all treatment effects, same below). The total global warming potential (GWP) of GHG emissions in the Control, UR, MS, and LP treatments were 36.56, 39.40, 42.36, and 42.99 Mg CO2 equivalent (CO2-e) ha?1 year?1, respectively, with CO2 emission accounting for more than 95 % of total GWP regardless of the understory management treatment. The MS and LP treatments increased soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), soil water soluble organic C (WSOC) and microbial biomass C (MBC), while the UR treatment decreased SOC, TN and NO3 ?-N but had no effect on WSOC and MBC. Soil GHG emissions were correlated with soil temperature and WSOC across the treatments, but had no relationship with soil moisture content and MBC.

Conclusions

Although replacing competitive understory vegetation with legume or less competitive non-legume species increased soil GHG emissions and total GWP, such treatments also increased soil C and N pools and are therefore beneficial for increasing soil C storage, maintaining soil fertility, and enhancing the productivity of Chinese chestnut plantations.

Background and aims

Growth and distribution of fine roots closely depend on soil resource availability and affect soil C distribution in return. Understanding of relationships between fine root distribution and soil C can help to predict the contribution of fine root turnover to soil C accumulation.

Methods

A study was conducted in a subtropical Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation to assess the fine root mass density (FRMD), fine root C density (FRCD) of different fine root groups as well as their relations with soil C.

Results

The FRMD and FRCD of short-lived roots, dead roots and herb roots peaked in the 0–10 cm soil layer and decreased with soil depth, while FRMD, FRCD of long-lived roots peaked in the 10–20 cm soil layer. Soil C was positively related to FRMD and FRCD of total fine roots (across all three soil layers), dead roots (0–10 cm) and herb roots (10–20 cm) as well as FRCD of short-lived roots (20–40 cm) (P <0.05).

Conclusions

Soil C was mainly affected by herb roots in upper soil layers and by woody plant roots in deeper soil layers.
