Sequence variation of ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) among populations, species, and genera of the diatom genus Stephanodiscus was investigated. ITS 1 and ITS 2, including the 5.8S gene, were sequenced from geographically distant and nearby populations of S. niagarae Ehrenberg. In addition, repeats from S. hantzschii Grunow and Cyclotella meneghiniana Kützing were sequenced to determine the taxonomic range over which the ITS region could be used for diatom systematics. The morphologically distinct S. yellowstonensis Theriot & Stoermer, thought to have evolved from S. niagarae in Yellowstone Lake between 12,000 and 8000 years ago, also was sequenced to assess its relationship to nearby S. niagarae populations. The organization and relative sizes of ITS 1 and ITS 2 in Stephanodiscus species were similar to those reported for other eukaryotes. In general, ITS 2 was slightly larger and more variable than ITS 1. Cladistic analysis of ITS sequences did not resolve relationships of nearby S. niagarae and S. yellowstonensis populations. However, central North American S. niagarae populations were in a clade supported by two nucleotide changes. For Cyclotella, much of the ITS region was not alignable with that for Stephanodiscus species; therefore, generic-level comparison within the Thalassiosiraceae may not be possible. The variation (95–96% similarity) between S. hantzschii and other Stephanodiscus species suggests that interspecific relationships could be assessed with ITS sequences. Although S. yellowstonensis is morphologically distinct from S. niagarae, no autapomorphic nucleotide sites were identified. Two S. niagarae populations (Heart and Lewis Lakes), however, did possess autapomorphic ITS sites.  相似文献

The recent discovery that the hoolock gibbon (Hylobates hoolock [Harlan, 1834]) has a karyotype distinct from all other hylobatids provides a new and strong motive for revising gibbon taxonomy and establishing hoolocks in a separate, higher taxon. Revising Groves's taxonomy of 1972, we propose that hoolock, along with the fossil species sericus, occupy a subgenus, Bunopithecus. With the newly added taxon, the genus Hylobates would thus contain four subgenera: Bunopithecus, Hylobates, Nomascus, and Symphalangus.  相似文献

During a survey of fungicolous fungi, a novel taxon from the surface of stroma of an unidentified Xylaria species was collected. Phylogenetic analyses showed that this taxon clustered with Calcarisporium sp. and C. arbuscula isolates, but was resolved as a distinct species. A detailed morphological examination coupled with phylogenetic analysis indicated that the taxon represented a new species. Calcarisporium xylariicola sp. nov. is thus introduced. The new taxon is characterized by short conidiophores with swollen bases and less length/width ratio of conidia that distinguish it from other Calcarisporium species. Calcarisporium is presently placed in Hypocreales genera, incertae sedis genus. Species in the genus are largely fungicolous, or occasionally caulicolous or foliicolous, and have hyaline, erect, verticillate conidiophores and sympodial, polyblastic conidiation. A phylogenetic analysis of combined SSU, ITS, LSU, TEF and RPB2 sequence data from Calcarisporium species and other taxa in Hypocreales indicate that Calcarisporium is a distinct lineage from other families. Therefore, a new family, Calcarisporiaceae, in Hypocreales is introduced.  相似文献

A species ofSporothrix was consistently isolated from leaf spots and serious shoot infections on a clone ofEucalyptus grandis in Northern Natal, South Africa. The fungus was morphologically distinct from other species in the genus and is consequently described as a new taxon,S. eucalypti. Sporothrix eucalypti was shown to be highly virulent in pathogenicity tests on a number ofE. grandis clones. Significant differences amongst susceptibility of clones were also detected in these tests.Sporothrix eucalypti represents a new pathogen ofEucalyptus that has the potential to cause substantial damage to this host in South Africa and probably elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

Summary

Cyprus is rich in endemics; however, all but two lacewing species are shared with the mainland. Thus, the discovery of a new morphologically distinct species of chrysopid belonging to the extensively studied genus Chrysopa, Chrysopa niki n. sp., appears remarkable. While most Chrysopa species differ in relatively subtle morphological characters, the new taxon is set apart from all Western Palaearctic congeners due to a unique combination of pattern, venational, leg and genital characters. The characteristics of C. niki n. sp. suggest that it might be an endemic to Cyprus, not strictly related to other congeners, underlining the importance of the discovery. The biogeography of Cypriot Neuroptera is discussed in light of this new finding.  相似文献

The study of phytoplankton from rivers and lakes in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain and the eastern macrosclope of the Polar Ural by scanning electron microscopy has revealed 25 taxa of Bacillariophyta from the class Centrophyceae (seven Aulacoseira, one Cyclostephanos, four Cyclotella, two Discostella, one Melosira, one Puncticulata, seven Stephanodiscus, and two Thalassiosira), including new species for the flora of the investigated bodies of water. The revision of the species composition of Centrophyceae in bodies of water and watercourses in the southeast part of the West Siberian Plain has allowed more exact identifying the taxonomic spectrum of this class. At present, the list includes 55 species, varieties and forms. During first studies conducted in rivers and lakes of the Lyapin River basin (Polar Ural) 16 species of centric diatoms that belong to the genera Aulacoseira, Cyclostephanos, Cyclotella, Discostella, Puncticulata, and Stephanodiscus have been recorded.  相似文献

Two species of Pluchea have been introduced into the Hawaiian Islands in the present century. These are P. indica, native to southeastern Asia, and P. odorata, native to the western hemisphere. Both are erect shrubs. Within the past 30 years a third Pluchea taxon, a sprawling shrub morphologically distinct from the two species, has appeared in the Hawaiian Islands and on other islands in the tropical Pacific. On the basis of morphology, fertility, meiotic behavior, and other evidence, it is concluded that the third taxon is a hybrid between the two species. The hybrid is highly sterile; it has a limited capacity for asexual reproduction. Metaphase I configurations for both species were found to be 10II; the most frequent configuration in the hybrid was 8II + 4I. The hybrid is given a binomial.  相似文献

Laurencia marilzae Gil‐Rodríguez, Sentíes et M.T. Fujii sp. nov. is described based on specimens that have been collected from the Canary Islands. This new species is characterized by distinctive yellow–orange as its natural habitat color, a terete thallus, four pericentral cells per vegetative axial segment, presence of secondary pit‐connections between adjacent cortical cells, markedly projecting cortical cells, and also by the presence of corps en cerise (one per cell) present in all cells of the thallus (cortical, medullary, including pericentral and axial cells, and trichoblasts). It also has a procarp‐bearing segment with five pericentral cells and tetrasporangia that are produced from the third and fourth pericentral cells, which are arranged in a parallel manner in relation to fertile branchlets. The phylogenetic position of this taxon was inferred based on chloroplast‐encoded rbcL gene sequence analyses. Within the Laurencia assemblage, L. marilzae formed a distinctive lineage sister to all other Laurencia species analyzed. Previously, a large number of unique diterpenes dactylomelane derivatives were isolated and identified from this taxon. L. marilzae is morphologically, genetically, and chemically distinct from all other related species of the Laurencia complex described.  相似文献

Hybridization and introgression are common in plants and lead to morphological similarity between species and taxonomic confusion. This gene flow with closely related species can complicate efforts to determine whether an endangered taxon is evolutionarily distinctive and should be identified as a separate conservation unit. Potentilla delphinensis is a rare and threatened endemic species of the Southern French Alps. Two common related taxa (P. grandiflora and P. thuringiaca) are morphologically similar and occur in the same geographical locations. Thus, whether P. delphinensis represents a reliable conservation unit remained unclear. Our evaluation procedure based on a combination of molecular biology and interspecific crosses was used to define taxa within these plants. Plants were sampled from a total of 23 single and mixed localities for the three supposed taxa and were genotyped with 68 polymorphic Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) loci. Fourty-one seedlings from interspecific crosses were obtained and genotyped. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism markers identified four genetically distinct units (P. delphinensis, P. grandiflora and two distinct groups of P. thuringiaca). All individuals of P. delphinensis formed a homogeneous and distinct taxon. This taxon was most probably an old allopolyploid from P. grandiflora and the related group of P. thuringiaca. Interspecific crosses gave low seed set and low germination rate. Furthermore, assignment test indicated that seedlings obtained from interspecific crosses were essentially apomictic rather than hybrids. These results suggest that a reproductive barrier exists between the different taxa. In conclusion, all results supported P. delphinensis as a true biological species and justified its conservation unit status. A surprising outcome of this work was the evidence of a potential new cryptic species. This study demonstrated the need to combine a molecular marker-based approach and pollination experiments for an accurate evaluation of plant taxa.  相似文献

A unique ichnofossil assemblage from Pennsylvanian-age sandstones near Eaton Rapids, Michigan, USA, comprises straight-to-curved traces preserved in convex hyporelief, with the transverse ridges and median grove associated with the ichnogenus Arthrophycus. The Michigan traces show some branching or pseudo-branching (also known from other Arthrophycus specimens) and are among the smallest structures (millimeters in diameter) attributed to this ichnogenus. The orientation of the Michigan Arthrophycus burrows is distinct from other ichnospecies of this taxon in the pronounced co-planar alignment of the burrows, as opposed to the multiplanar, interweaving, “bundled” nature typical of the ichnogenus. On this basis we assign the Michigan specimens to a new ichnospecies of Arthrophycus. The “paralleling behavior” of the new taxon may reflect a strategy of the tracemaker to avoid previous burrows and reflect differences in resource availability or current energy. This new taxon supports previous records of the occurrence of this ichnogenus in Upper Carboniferous strata.  相似文献

Stipa ×brozhiana M. Nobis nothosp. nov. (Poaceae) is described and illustrated. The taxon belongs to sect. Smirnovia Tzvel. and originated from the hybridization of species belonging to sect. Smirnovia and Barbatae Junge. Stipa ×brozhiana is morphologically close to Stipa lipskyi Roshev., but is easily distinguished by its much shorter hairs on the seta, thinner, uni‐ or indistinctly bigeniculate awns, differently shaped callus and longer ligules of vegetative shoots. Characters distinguishing S. ×brozhiana from the parental species and other similar hybrid taxa belonging to sect. Smirnovia and occurring in the Pamir Alai Mts are discussed. In addition, the taxonomical status of S. ×tzvelevii Ikonn. pro sp., another taxon that has originated from hybridization between species belonging to sect. Smirnovia and Barbatae, is discussed. The taxon was originally described as a distinct species, but is now considered to be the hybrid S. caucasica×S. orientalis. The main characters distinguishing S. ×tzvelevii from parental species are given.  相似文献

Due to their reduced morphology, non-photosynthetic plants have been one of the most challenging groups to delimit to species level. The mycoheterotrophic genus Monotropastrum, with the monotypic species M. humile, has been a particularly taxonomically challenging group, owing to its highly reduced vegetative and root morphology. Using integrative species delimitation, we have focused on Japanese Monotropastrum, with a special focus on an unknown taxon with rosy pink petals and sepals. We investigated its flowering phenology, morphology, molecular identity, and associated fungi. Detailed morphological investigation has indicated that it can be distinguished from M. humile by its rosy pink tepals and sepals that are generally more numerous, elliptic, and constantly appressed to the petals throughout its flowering period, and by its obscure root balls that are unified with the surrounding soil, with root tips that hardly protrude. Based on genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms, molecular data has provided clear genetic differentiation between this unknown taxon and M. humile. Monotropastrum humile and this taxon are associated with different Russula lineages, even when they are sympatric. Based on this multifaceted evidence, we describe this unknown taxon as the new species M. kirishimense. Assortative mating resulting from phenological differences has likely contributed to the persistent sympatry between these two species, with distinct mycorrhizal specificity.

A new small species of Eocaiman is described on the basis of three anterior left mandibular rami and one isolated tooth. The specimens came from the middle-upper Paleocene Itaboraí Basin (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil; Itaboraian South American Land Mammal Age). The new taxon differs from the other two Eocaiman species, such as its small size, likely participation of the splenial in the mandibular symphysis, a reduced angle between the longitudinal axis of the symphysis and the mandibular ramus, and enlarged ninth and tenth dentary teeth (in addition to the large first and fourth dentary teeth). The participation of the splenial in the mandibular symphysis is a unique character among caimanines (with the only possible exception being Tsoabichi greenriverensis). The new taxon provides new information on the taxonomic and anatomical diversity of the genus Eocaiman, a taxon of prime importance to understand the evolutionary origins of caimans given its position as the basalmost member of Caimaninae. Furthermore, the new taxon has a relatively small body size in comparison with other species of Eocaiman, a case paralleled by other Itaboraian reptilian groups (e.g. snakes), suggesting that this ecosystem provides critical data to test the relationship between reptilian body size and climate.

Fossil cercopithecoid material from Ngeringerowa, Ngorora, and Nakali, dated at between 8.5 and 10.5 m.y., is described. The specimens are the only cercopithecoid remains dated between 15 and 6 m.y. from sub-Saharan Africa. The mandible of asmall colobine from Ngeringerowa (similar in size to Colobus verus) is assigned to a new genus and species, Microcolobus tugenensis. Unlike other colobine genera, the symphysis of Microcolobus lacks an inferior transverse torus. A colobine lower M1 or 2 from Nakali is longer and narrower than molars of M. tugenensis, indicating that it may belong to a distinct taxon. A P4 from Ngorora cannot be assigned confidently to subfamily, due to its unique metaconid morphology. The relationship between the new genus and other Miocene monkeys is considered.  相似文献

A review of the history of the genus Psilophyton is presented. Two new species with sporangia in organic connection, P. microspinosum and P. dapsile, are described. They are compared with Psilophyton-like plants from Maine and other previously described fertile species of this genus. Evidence from several species in the Trout Valley flora confirms the concept of this taxon as presented by Hueber and Banks. Data based on all sporangium-bearing species of Psilophyton are outlined, certain evolutionary trends within the taxon are tentatively presented, and recommendations for the treatment of the numerous fragmentary species and future new species are suggested.  相似文献

During a revision of Venezuelan species of Stylosanthes Sw., two quite distinct specimens were found. After a detailed survey of the literature and herbarium material, it was concluded that they belong to an undescribed species. The new species Stylosanthes falconensis Calles & Schultze-Kr. (belonging to section Styposanthes Vogel), endemic to the Sierra San Luis in the State of Falcón, is here described. An illustration is provided and the differences between the new taxon and Stylosanthes hamata (L.) Taub., a closely related species, are presented.  相似文献

The Synura petersenii species complex represents a common, cosmopolitan and highly diverse taxon of autotrophic freshwater flagellates. In this paper, we describe and characterize four new species (S. borealis, S. heteropora, S. hibernica and S. laticarina) that have been identified during our extensive sampling of freshwater habitats in 15 European countries. Morphometric analyses of siliceous scales led to the significant phenotypic differentiation of all four newly described species, and their separation from other related species of the S. petersenii complex. Two of these newly described species (S. hibernica and S. borealis) can be clearly distinguished by characteristic large colonies consisting of elongated, lanceolate-shaped cells. Development of strongly elongated, narrow cells in S. hibernica could be explained by the adaptation of this species to oligotrophic conditions. Though morphologically distinct, S. borealis possesses an exceptionally high degree of genetic diversity, possibly indicating recent speciation and evolutionary diversification within this taxon. Three of the four newly described species exhibit restricted biogeographic distribution. The evolutionarily related S. borealis and S. laticarina occur only in Northern Europe, and seem to be adapted to colder areas. The most remarkable distribution pattern was observed for S. hibernica, which has a geographic distribution that is restricted to western Ireland.  相似文献

We describe Vipera walser, a new viper species from the north‐western Italian Alps. Despite an overall morphological resemblance with Vipera berus, the new species is remarkably distinct genetically from both V. berus and other vipers occurring in western Europe and shows closer affinities to species occurring only in the Caucasus. Morphologically, the new species appear to be more similar to V. berus than to its closest relatives occurring in the Caucasus, but can be readily distinguished in most cases by a combination of meristic features as confirmed by discriminant analysis. The extant population shows a very low genetic variability measured with mitochondrial markers, suggesting that the taxon has suffered a serious population reduction/bottleneck in the past. The species is extremely range‐restricted (less than 500 km2) and occurs only in two disjunct sites within the high rainfall valleys of the Alps north of Biella. This new species should be classified as globally ‘endangered’ due to its small and fragmented range, and an inferred population decline. The main near‐future threats to the species are habitat changes associated with reduced grazing, along with persecution and collecting.  相似文献
