Cover is the most frequently used measure of abundance in vegetation surveys of grasslands, and various qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been developed for visual estimation of this metric. Field survey is usually made with a point-grid plate. The frequency distributions of cover derived from point-grid counts follow a beta distribution. Combining point-grid counts from a field survey and the beta distribution for a statistical analysis, we developed an effort-saving cover-measurement method. Cover is measured with a transparent plastic plate on which, for example, 10 × 10 = 100 points are arranged in a lattice with 1-cm grid spacing (thus, one point count represents 1 cm2 of cover). N quadrats are set out at randomly dispersed sites in a grassland, and, in each, the plastic plate is used for making counts. The number of grid points located above a given species is counted in every quadrat until the number of counted points reaches a given value c, which is determined in advance. If the number of counted points reaches c in a quadrat, the count is stopped and the quadrat is classified in the category “>c”. In quadrats where c is not attained, full point counts above the species bodies are made. Let g be the number of observed quadrats whose cover is ≤c. Using these g cover measurements and the number of quadrats (N − g) with cover >c, we can quantitatively estimate cover for each species and the spatial pattern index value based on the maximum likelihood method. In trial counts using this method, the time savings varied between 5% and 41%, depending on the shape of the cover frequency distribution. The mean cover value estimates agreed well with conventional measures without a stopping point (i.e., based on full counts of all points in each quadrat).  相似文献

Summary

The vegetation of the Monach Islands is described by means of a grid of 336 1 m quadrats. Using the error sum of squares statistic these quadrats are grouped into seven communities and a residue: a brief outline and a frequency table of each is presented. These communities are seen to result in a zonation away from the sea which is related to soil differences, particularly an increase in organic matter; biotic differences, including rabbit and sheep grazing; and man's past cultivation practises.  相似文献

An individual tree-based forest succession model was modified to simulate a forest stand as a grid of contiguous 0.01-ha cells. We simulated a 9 ha stand for 750 years and sampled the stand at 50 yr intervals, outputting structural variables for each grid cell. Principal components analysis was used to depict temporal patterns in forest structure as observed in 0.01 ha samples (individual grid cells). We then resampled the grid using square aggregates of 4 to 100 grid cells as quadrats. Principal component scores recalculated for the aggregates, using the original (0.01 ha scale) scoring matrix, depict the effects of obervational scale on perceived patterns in forest structure. Larger quadrats reduce the apparent variation in forest structure and decrease the apparent rate of structural dynamics. Results support a scale-dependent conceptualization of forest systems by illustrating the qualitative difference in forest dynamics as viewed at the scale of individual gap elements as compared to the larger scale steady state mosaic. The aggregation exercise emphasizes the relationship between these two observational scales and serves as a general framework for understanding scaling relationships in ecological phenomena.  相似文献

以浙江省天台山七子花群落为研究对象,采用相邻格子样方法取样数据,应用方差/均值比的t检验法、负二项参数、扩散型指数、Cassie指标、丛生指标、平均拥挤指数和聚块性指数等方法,分析了七子花群落各优势种群以及七子花种群在各样地中的分布格局,并分立木级对七子花种群在不同样地内的集群强度进行了测定。结果是:群落中各优势种群均呈集群分布;七子花种群在各样地亦呈集群分布,但集群强度有差异;各样地中七子花种群小树的集群强度均大于中树,种群呈扩散趋势。  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of large wood (LW) on the physical environment and the initial establishment of vascular plant species in the Rekifune River, a large bar-braided monsoonal river in Japan. The physical environment and the diversity and composition of plant species were compared in relation to the orientation of LW pieces. We found that shading effects were more prevalent in the immediate vicinity of LW pieces than in quadrats distant from LW. The effect was especially strong at the center of LW jams (the “jam center”). Fine sand and silt were concentrated in the quadrats downstream from the LW pieces. In contrast, cobbles dominated the upstream quadrats. The highest diversity was found in the jam center, while intermediate values were observed in the quadrats surrounding LW. Indicator species analysis detected 21 indicator species only in the jam center. The LW jams favored the deposition of plant fragments and sediment and created shaded areas within and around the structures. Buried seeds may be transported with LW during a flood, and seeds dispersed by wind and stream flows may be trapped by the complex structure of LW jams. The specific environmental conditions and the trapping of seeds and plant fragments result in the early establishment of mid-successional tree species at LW jams. In conclusion, the LW pieces deposited on gravel bars altered the light and substrate conditions and thereby provided specific safe sites for various riparian plant species.  相似文献

To determine what happens to scleractinian corals that have been killed by black band disease (BBD), massive corals with BBD were monitored for 11 years on a shallow reef (<10 m depth) in St. John, US Virgin Islands. Small quadrats (0.039 m2) were used to compare the rates of scleractinian recruitment to the skeletons of corals killed by either BBD or physical disturbance (Hurricane Hugo 1989). Coral recruitment was also quantified on the adjacent fringing reef using larger quadrats (0.25 m2) to detect possible biases associated with using small, permanent quadrats to assess recruitment to BBD-killed corals. Of 28 tagged colonies with BBD in 1988, 43% were lost to Hurricane Hugo in 1989, 7% were lost to unknown causes between 1991 and 1992, and 14 were monitored annually for 11 years; of these, 71% were dead and still in their original growth position in 1998. Between 1988 and 1997, corals recruited to the BBD-killed surfaces at a rate of 1.1 ± 0.3 recruits · 0.039 m−2 · decade−1 (mean ± SE, n = 14), although mortality reduced the density to 0.3 ± 0.2 recruits · 0.039 m−2 by 1997. The rate of recruitment and the taxonomic composition of the coral recruits to BBD-killed corals were indistinguishable statistically from those to corals killed by Hurricane Hugo. This demonstrates that BBD creates space that is functionally the same as other dead coral surfaces in providing a substratum for coral recruitment. However, because coral recruits are dispersed widely, clumped in distribution and temporally variable in density on the fringing reef as a whole, it is unlikely that they will be found on monitored coral colonies that have been killed by BBD. While this hypothesis is consistent with the higher density of recruits on the fringing reef compared with BBD-killed corals, further studies are required to investigate alternative explanations such as the role of substratum age in favoring recruitment to surfaces other than those killed recently by BBD. Using 18 years of census data from permanent quadrats, we examined the interactions between spatially coexisting but temporally segregated winter and summer ephemeral plant communities in the Chihuahuan Desert. The ability of winter and summer annuals to achieve nearly complete temporal segregation by partitioning the bimodal annual rainfall permits the coexistence of a diverse flora of annual (and perennial) plants in this unproductive arid environment. Despite the differences in their biogeographical affinities and temporal segregation, long-term data indicated that at the scales of both the entire 20-ha study site and small 0.25-m2 sample quadrats, abundances of plants were never high in two successive growing seasons, suggesting a negative interaction between winter and summer annuals. 在福建省三明市罗卜岩自然保护区内选择由落叶阔叶树种为主的常绿落叶阔叶混交林向中亚热带典型常绿阔叶林演替过程中的4个不同演替阶段的代表性群落,以群落组成类型作为一维资源位,以树种的重要值作为资源位上的表现特征,定量分析了闽楠林中优势树种生态位宽度和生态位重叠情况。结果表明,大部分的常绿阔叶树种具有较大的生态位宽度值,而落叶阔叶树种则呈现较小的生态位宽度值;两类树种的;生态位虽有一定程度的重叠,但总体仍然较低。这些结果与两类树种对光等生态因子要求不同直接相关。生态位宽度值较大的常绿阔叶树种之间可产生较高的生态位重叠值。生态位宽度值较大的树种与生态位宽度较小的树种也可产生较大的生态位重叠值,但较小生态位宽度值的树种与较大生态位宽度值的树种往往只有小的生态位重叠值,而较小生态位宽度值的树种之间则可有国产高的生态位重叠值。上述的生态位研究结果有助于理解由落叶阔叶树种为主的常绿落叶阔叶林向中亚热带典型常绿阔叶林演替过程中优势各群的生态适应性变化规律。  相似文献

We investigated the genetic structure of Eryngium alpinum (Apiaceae) in an Alpine valley where the plant occurs in patches of various sizes. In a conservation perspective, our goal was to determine whether the valley consists of one or several genetic units. Habitat fragmentation and previous observations of restricted pollen/seed dispersal suggested pronounced genetic structure, but gene dispersal often follows a leptokurtic distribution, which may lead to weak genetic structure. We used nine microsatellite loci and two nested sampling designs (50 × 50 m grid throughout the valley and 2 × 2 m grid in two 50 × 10 m quadrats). Within the overall valley, F -statistics and Bayesian approaches indicated high genetic homogeneity. This result might be explained by: (1) underestimation of long-distance pollen/seed dispersal by in situ experiments and (2) too recent fragmentation events to build up genetic structure. Spatial autocorrelation revealed isolation by distance on the overall valley but this pattern was much more pronounced in the 50 × 10 m quadrats sampled with a 2-m mesh. This was probably associated with limited primary seed dispersal, leading to the spatial clustering of half-sibs around maternal plants. The submersed vegetation of mesotrophic, alkaline Chenango Lake in New York, USA, was monitored at two spatio-temporal scales: a 200 m2 grid censused annually from 1978 to 1993 and again in 2001 (12,800 quadrats), and a 1.8 ha littoral zone sampled every 6–10 years (1978, 1984, 1991, and 2001; 3600 quadrats). The grid vegetation fluctuated rather erratically for the first 11 years with each of the dominant species showing a different pattern of change. Frequency values for Chara vulgaris were the most dynamic, while those for Vallisneria americana were the most stable. After 1989, grid vegetation declined, so that by 2001, only four of the original 11 species were present (including the original dominants), and the total number of observations declined to <10% of the maximum recorded. This decline is attributed to vigorous benthic feeding by carp (Cyprinus carpio), not noted in 1978 but relatively abundant by 2001. Frequency changes of species in the 200 m2 grid were positively correlated with corresponding frequency changes in the 1.8 ha littoral zone, indicating that a small, carefully chosen area may reflect vegetation at a larger scale. Temporal changes in food availability affect foraging success and ultimately reproductive success of animals. They include both seasonal and annual changes. Although many researchers have investigated food availability and the corresponding ranging behavior of primates, studies of yearly changes have been limited. We studied the effects of the fruiting of nuts of Fagus crenata, Zelkova serrata, and Torreya nucifera on the ranging behavior of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in autumn on Kinkazan Island, northern Japan, for 5 yr between 2000 and 2005 (excluding 2003). We divided the study area (3.3 km2) into 100 × 100-m quadrats to assess the distribution of nut-rich quadrats that contained high densities of nut-producing species. The home ranges of the monkeys contained more nut-rich quadrats than expected, and the difference was significant for 3 of 5 yr. Autumn home-range use was also affected by the distribution of nut production, although the effect differed by year: monkeys frequently used nut-rich quadrats in a Zelkova-year (2000) and in 1 Torreya-year (2001), whereas they nonselectively used nut-rich quadrats in 2 Fagus-years (2002 and 2005) and in another Torreya-year (2004). Thus, Japanese macaques flexibly change their autumn ranging behavior according to yearly changes in distribution of nut production.  相似文献

This study examines vascular plant species richness along an altitudinal gradient in alpine Australia. Vascular plant composition and soil temperature records were obtained for five summits (from 1729 m to 2114 m a.s.l.) using sampling protocols from the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments program. Species richness was examined against altitude, aspect and climatic variables at different spatial scales (10 × 10 cm quadrats, 1 m2 quadrats, clusters of 4 * 1 m2 quadrats, for the summit area above a line 5 m altitudinally below the summit (the −5 m isoline), for the extended summit down to the −10 m isoline). About 75 taxa (70 species, 5 graminoid genera) were recorded, 9 of which are endemic to the small alpine area of ∼100 km2. There were significant linear relationships between species richness and altitude and climatic variables for the top to −5 isolines on the summits. However, there was no consistent pattern for species richness at other spatial scales, altitude, aspect or climatic variables. The proportion of species for the whole summits with localised distributions (local endemics) increased with altitude. Predicted increasing temperatures and reduced snowcover is likely to result in an increase in species richness as shrubs, herbs and introduced weeds become more common at higher altitude. Because Australian alpine areas occur in narrow altitudinal bands with no nival zone, there are no higher altitudinal refuges available for alpine species. Therefore many of these species are likely to be at risk of extinction from climate change.  相似文献

Relationships between microhabitat variables; understory light conditions in summer and winter, altitude, slope inclination and topographic categories (valley, ridge, and slope) and the distribution of Aucuba japonica Thunb. (Cornaceae), a common understory shrub species in Japan were examined using non-contagious 66, 20 × 20 m2 quadrats. The Morishita’s I δ suggested that A. japonica distributions were strongly heterogeneous among the quadrats. Therefore positive spatial autocorrelation of A. japonica at a within-quadrat level (≤20 m) was obvious. Moran’s I statistics showed a significant positive spatial autocorrelation in A. japonica abundance within the distance shorter than 60 m. But the partial Mantel tests suggested that the mass effect from neighboring quadrats would little explain A. japonica abundance in a quadrat. The partial Mantel tests also clearly showed that A. japonica distributions were strongly structured by topography and understory light conditions. Using Monte Carlo randomization tests, we found that A. japonica was aggregately distributed in quadrats in valley which were covered by deciduous canopies. Better understory light conditions in winter together with valley edaphic conditions may increase the abundance of A. japonica there. It is concluded that habitat niche specialization is important in structuring distribution of A. japonica in this forest community.  相似文献

A preliminary attempt was made to quantify the alpha diversity of fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) along a short transect across the interface between an intertidal mudflat and a largely Avicennia mangrove at Ambeua on the Indonesian island of Kaledupa in Sulawesi Tenggara, by means of visual counts within 2 m2 quadrats. An astounding diversity of up to six seemingly coexisting species per quadrat—and a total of seven such species within an area of 4 m2—was revealed. Four species of the ecologically equivalent sentinel crabs (Macrophthalmus) were also present in the quadrats. Seven fiddler crab species equates to more than half those known from Wallacea, more than one-third of all those known from Indonesia, and almost one-fifth of the entire Uca fauna of the Indo-West-Pacific.  相似文献

Quantitative data on the habitat characteristics of stream crayfish have been generally lacking and competing demands on water resources has created a need to address this knowledge gap. We investigated day-time habitat relationships of stream crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons White) from 793 quadrats at 30 rivers and streams in the North Island, New Zealand to develop models of koura presence–absence and abundance. The model (stepwise GAM) included width, cover, median substrate size, edge location, velocity and depth, and correctly predicted presence–absence of crayfish (8–39 mm OCL) at 73.4% of quadrats and of young-of-the-year (YOY) ≤8 mm OCL at 83.4% of quadrats. Streams ranged from 1.6 to 11.5 m in width and the probability of finding both crayfish size classes reduced sharply as streams became wider than 6 m and as the substrate became large (i.e., boulder > 256 mm). Crayfish, particularly YOY, were most likely to be found in association with cover and at the stream edge. YOY were associated with shallow depths and fine substrates, whereas larger crayfish showed a preference for cobble substrate. Undercut banks, leaf litter, tree roots, and woody debris were strongly related to the presence–absence of crayfish. The model for crayfish abundance (log-linear Poisson GAM) explained 50% of the variation between quadrats with cover, velocity, edge location, depth, and the overall crayfish abundance at each particular stream being significant variables. Highest crayfish numbers were recorded in still or slow flowing water, with the majority occurring where velocities were below 0.4 m/s. Water depths up to 0.7 m were sampled, but highest numbers were found in depths of 0.2–0.3 m. Our presence–absence model determined variables that were significant over all streams, whereas our abundance model determined variables that were significant within streams. Use of the GAMs models enabled us to untangle the multiple factors contributing to habitat selection. Cover, velocity, and locations at the stream edge were important determinants of both presence–absence and abundance. Generally, substrate was important when comparing between streams, but not within streams, whereas depth was a significant determinant of abundance within streams, but not presence–absence between streams. The density of scleractinian corals on portions of two reefs in the Grenadine Islands, W. I. has been investigated by direct observation by SCUBA divers. Grid, transect, and random quadrat methods were compared with total samples to determine the precision and accuracy of these techniques. Transect methods were generally satisfactory provided at least 15% of a 400 m2 total grid area was included in the sample. The data strongly indicated clumped distributions of all species, although numerical analysis does not indicate the distinct zones reported by other workers. Species associations based on Jaccard's coefficient and cluster analysis showed possible similarities in physical requirements, although few strong associations were found. Data based on 4 m2 quadrats generally provided a more reliable estimate of species associations than did data based on 1 m2 quadrats. It is suggested that surveys of these reef types may be better based on a number of parallel transects rather than a single transect, and that well-defined zones are more likely to be the exception than the rule.  相似文献

Aquatic macrophytes provide essential spawning and nursery habitat for fish, valuable food source for waterfowl, migratory birds and mammals, and contribute greatly to overall biodiversity of coastal marshes of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Two approaches have been used to survey the plant community in coastal wetlands, and these include the grid (GR) and transect (TR) methods. These methods have been used to identify the average species richness at different sites, but their suitability for determining total species richness of a site has not been tested. In this paper, we compare the performance of these two established methods with that of the Stratified method (ST), which uses the sampler’s judgment to guide them to different habitat zones within the wetland. We used the three protocols to compare species richness of six coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes, three pristine marshes in eastern Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) and three degraded wetlands in Lake Ontario, Canada. The greatest species richness was associated with the ST method, irrespective of wetland quality. The ST method was also more efficient (fewer quadrats sampled), and revealed the most number of unique (those found with only one method) and uncommon species (those found in <5% of the quadrats). Despite these statistical differences, we found that sampling method did not significantly affect the performance of a recently developed index of wetland quality, the Wetland Macrophyte Index. These results have important implications for designing macrophyte surveys to track changes in biodiversity and wetland quality.  相似文献

以百山祖自然保护区5 hm2永久样地150个幼苗监测站木本植物幼苗为研究对象,2008—2011年定期调查样方中幼苗的种类、数量、萌发、死亡等,探究亚热带中山常绿阔叶林幼苗种类组成、数量动态及其与生境的相关性。结果表明:1)百山祖样地在2008年至2011年出现的幼苗属于26科,40属,共53个物种,不同物种萌发时段有异;2)2009年样地幼苗存活比率为7.7%,2010年为-20.8%,2011年则是-0.3%,幼苗存活比率不高,种类和数量呈减少趋势;3)存活幼苗中有明显的优势物种,分别为光亮山矾(Symplocos lucida)、尖连蕊茶(Camellia cuspidata)、浙闽新木姜子(Neolitsea aurata var.undulatula)、尖叶菝葜(Smilax arisanensis)和短尾柯(Lithocarpus brevicaudatus),5个物种之和占幼苗总数比例50%;4)种子的萌发与生境有极显著的相关性,且与生境因子中水分关联最大;5)存活幼苗数与样站坡位、水分、落叶层厚度呈现显著相关性,水和光照是影响幼苗存活的主要因素。  相似文献

Summary During a field course the vegetation of the extensive mire complex on the west side of Malham Tarn was examined. 84 relevés were collected, with 210 taxa in total. This data set has been ‘structured’ by classical phytosociological techniques. It is suggested that it approaches the maximum size of data-set which can be handled in this way, especially if the data are not all collected by one person. Ordination of the quadrats was carried out but gave little insight into the data despite the use of non-centred as well as centred principal components analysis. Numerical classification of the quadrats using minimumvariance cluster analysis was shown to produce a structure interpretable in ecological terms. A classification of the taxa was carried out by the same method and a ‘rearranged’ table was drawn up using the results of the two classifications. A relocation technique was applied at an appropriate cluster level but little was felt to be gained from this. The use of ‘two-way’ minimum-variance cluster analysis for the rapid production of re-arranged tables is recommended for large data-sets.
