This study forms part of an investigation into the effects on fish of immersion in three rivers around Birmingham, UK. The rivers Blythe, Cole and Tame exhibit relatively high, intermediate and poor overall water quality, respectively, according to combined levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), as well as heavy metals. Specifically, biomarkers of genotoxicity (DNA strand breaks and adducts) were measured in feral and caged chub (Leuciscus cephalus), complementing another study in which data were presented for a number of other hepatic biomarkers measured in the same animals. In both feral and caged chub, there was a general elevation of DNA strand breaks with a decrease in chemical water quality, with some time points exhibiting significantly higher levels at the most (Tame) compared with least polluted sites (Blythe), particularly in the cage-held animals. Combined-season DNA adduct data suggested a higher degree of toxic insult in the feral compared with caged chub and revealed particularly high levels of adducts in fish caught from the Cole. The pattern of adducts shown was typical of exposure to a complex mixture of PAHs which were relatively high, and similar, in both the Cole and Tame. Overall, these data are consistent with exposure of both feral and caged chub to contaminants which are able to induce specific, moderately genotoxic effects.  相似文献

The proposal that plasma ammonia accumulation might impair the swimming performance of fish was first made over a decade ago, and has now proven to be the case for a number of salmonid species. The first experimental evidence was indirect, when a negative linear relationship between plasma ammonia concentrations and maximum sustainable swimming speed (U(crit)) was found following the exposure of brown trout (Salmo trutta) to sub-lethal concentrations of copper in soft acidic water. Since then, negative linear relationships between plasma ammonia concentration and U(crit) have been demonstrated following exposure of brown trout, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) to elevated water ammonia. For brown trout, the relationships between plasma ammonia and U(crit) were remarkably similar following either exposure to elevated water ammonia or to sub-lethal copper. This indicates that the impairment of swimming performance resulting from exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of heavy metals may be attributable in large part to an accumulation of endogenous ammonia. The negative relationship between plasma ammonia concentration and U(crit) was similar in size-matched rainbow and brown trout but, under similar regimes of ammonia exposure, rainbow trout were able to maintain a significantly lower plasma ammonia concentration, revealing inter-specific differences in ammonia permeability and/or transport. One primary mechanism by which ammonia accumulation may impair exercise performance is a partial depolarisation of membrane potential in tissues such as the brain and white muscle. This may prejudice the co-ordination of swimming movements and reduce or abolish the development of muscle tension, thus, compromising swimming efficiency and performance at the top end of the range.  相似文献

In a study aimed to determine the histopathology, component parasite communities and level of selected heavy metals, African catfish Clarias gariepinus from three rivers in Zimbabwe (Gwebi, Manyame and Mukuvisi) were analysed for heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the gills, liver, kidney and muscles. The histopathology of these tissues was assessed by microscopic examination of stained thin sections. Metazoan parasite diversity and species composition in fish along different sites of the rivers were determined and compared. Levels of Cd, Fe, Pb and Zn were lowest in the Gwebi, Cr and Cu in the Manyame, and Ni in the Mukuvisi River. There were significant differences (P < 0.5) in concentration of iron and nickel in the gill and liver tissues of fish among the three rivers while significant differences in concentration of iron and lead were observed in muscle tissue. Gill chronic inflammation and ossification were significantly different (P < 0.5) in fish from among the three rivers. Chronic inflammation, hemosiderin deposits and bile accumulation in the liver were also significantly different (P < 0.5) among the three rivers and so was the extent of chronic inflammation in the kidney tissue. Lamellar fusion was slightly more present in gills of catfish from the Mukuvisi than the Gwebi River. The parasite community of C. gariepinus comprised three monogenean, two cestode and three nematode species. The least polluted Gwebi River had the highest parasite community diversity while the most polluted Mukuvisi River had the lowest diversity. Fish parasite community structure is thus a potential indicator of river pollution, while heavy metal pollution is a potential threat to fish and human health in the system.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality level, metazoan parasites were examined in 157 specimens of chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), sampled in four lowland water courses (northern Italy): Ticino river (unpolluted), Naviglio Pavese Canal (slightly polluted), Lambro river near the Merone village (polluted) and near Monza (severely polluted). Dactylogyrus vistulae, Paradiplozoon ergensi, Bucephalus polymorphus, Acanthocephalus anguillae and larval stages of Tylodelphys clavata were found in all the sampled sites. The distribution of Lamproglena pulchella and Pomphorhynchus laevis was limited to the unpolluted and slightly polluted river sectors, while Asymphylodora tincae, glochidia, along with larval stages of Diplostomum spathaceum, were absent in the severely polluted site. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity), the degree of interactivity among parasites, as well as parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the water contamination level.  相似文献

This study was performed to observe the infection rate and infection intensity of fresh water fish such as pale chub (Z. platypus) and dark chub (Z. temminckii) with the metacercariae of C. armatus. The fish were caught in several rivers and streams from June to September, 1988 and examined by artificial digestion technique. Total 370 fish were caught at 19 rivers. The metacercarial (C. armatus) infection rate and average burden in Z. platypus were 86.8% and 224, and those in Z. temminckii were 78.5% and 131. The infection rate and burden per fish were 73.4% and 32 in the fish caught from the Han river, and 88.0% and 44 from the Youngsan river. All fish caught from the Keum and the Tamjin river were infected and their mean metacercarial density was 45 and 59 respectively. The infection rate and density in fish caught from the Seomjin and Nagdong rivers were 100% and 119, and 81.0% and 348 respectively. From this study, it is confirmed that C. armatus is widely distributed along 5 major rivers in Korea.  相似文献

The relationships among animal form, function and performance are complex, and vary across environments. Therefore, it can be difficult to identify morphological and/or physiological traits responsible for enhancing performance in a given habitat. In fishes, differences in swimming performance across water flow gradients are related to morphological variation among and within species. However, physiological traits related to performance have been less well studied. We experimentally reared juvenile damselfish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, under different water flow regimes to test 1) whether aspects of swimming physiology and morphology show plastic responses to water flow, 2) whether trait divergence correlates with swimming performance and 3) whether flow environment relates to performance differences observed in wild fish. We found that maximum metabolic rate, aerobic scope and blood haematocrit were higher in wave-reared fish compared to fish reared in low water flow. However, pectoral fin shape, which tends to correlate with sustained swimming performance, did not differ between rearing treatments or collection sites. Maximum metabolic rate was the best overall predictor of individual swimming performance; fin shape and fish total length were 3.3 and 3.7 times less likely than maximum metabolic rate to explain differences in critical swimming speed. Performance differences induced in fish reared in different flow environments were less pronounced than in wild fish but similar in direction. Our results suggest that exposure to water motion induces plastic physiological changes which enhance swimming performance in A. polyacanthus. Thus, functional relationships between fish morphology and performance across flow habitats should also consider differences in physiology.  相似文献

In the laboratory, courtship behavior and carotenoid pigmentation of male guppies are condition-dependent traits, since their expression is affected by physical vigor and environmental factors such as water velocity and diet. Whether these relationships exist in guppies under field conditions is yet to be determined. We compared the swimming performance, courtship behavior, and carotenoid pigmentation of guppies from headwater and downstream localities in four rivers of Trinidad. Swimming performance and courtship behavior of males differed among rivers and between headwater and downstream sites. Guppies from headwater sites swam significantly faster and had higher display rates than those from downstream sites. Mean swimming performance across sites was positively correlated with mean water velocity, but was correlated with the number of orange color spots (carotenoid pigment) in only one river. These results indicate that the courtship behavior of Trinidadian guppies is condition-dependent because the amount of display behavior is positively correlated to swimming performance, a measure of physical endurance. The proximal cause for this condition-dependence may be predator induced variation in microhabitat use by guppies in headwater and downstream locations.  相似文献

Re-establishing the natural connectivity of rivers using fishways may mitigate the unfavourable effects of dam construction on riverine biodiversity and freshwater fish populations. Knowledge of the swimming performance of target species in specific regions is critical for designing fishways with a high passage efficiency. Substrate roughening with river stones of fishways is considered to improve fish swimming capacity by benefiting from reduced-velocity zones with lower energetic costs. However, the effectiveness of rough substrates in energy metabolism is rarely tested. We investigated the effect of substrate roughening on the swimming capacity, oxygen consumption and behaviour of Schizothorax wangchiachii from the Heishui River in a flume-type swimming respirometer. The results showed that substrate roughening improved critical and burst swimming speed by ~12.9% and ~15.0%, respectively, compared to the smooth substrate. Our results demonstrate that increased reduced-velocity zones, lowered metabolic rate and tail-beat frequency support our hypothesis that lower energetic costs improve fish swimming performance in rough substrate compared to smooth treatment. The traversable flow velocity model predicted that maximum traversable flow velocity and maximum ascent distance were higher over rough compared to smooth substrate fishways. Fishway substrate roughening may be a practical approach to improve fish swimming upstream for demersal riverine fish.  相似文献

The Wujiang River, a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir, has many dams along its length. These dams alter the river's natural habitat and produce various flow regimes and degrees of predator stress. To test whether the swimming performance and external body shape of pale chub (Zacco platypus) have changed as a result of alterations in the flow regime and predator conditions, we measured the steady (U crit) and unsteady (fast-start) swimming performances and morphological characteristics of fish collected from different sites along the Wujiang River. We also calculated the maximum respiratory capacity and cost of transport (COT). We demonstrated significant differences in swimming performance and morphological traits among the sampling sites. Steady swimming performance was positively correlated with water velocity and negatively correlated with the abundance of predators, whereas unsteady swimming performance was negatively correlated with water velocity. The body shape was significantly correlated with both swimming performance and ecological parameters. These findings suggested that selection pressure on swimming performance results in a higher U crit and a more streamlined body shape in fast-flow and (or) in habitats with low predator stress and subsequently results in a lower COT. These characteristics were accompanied by a poorer fast-start performance than that of the fish from the slow-flow and (or) high-predator habitats. The divergence in U crit may also be due in part to variation in respiratory capacity.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine whether low-speed swimming during recovery from exhaustive exercise improved both metabolic recovery and performance during a swimming challenge. For these experiments, brook trout were allowed to recover from exhaustive exercise for 2 h while swimming at 0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 body length (BL) s(-1) or allowed to recover from exhaustive exercise for 1, 2, or 3 h while swimming at 1.0 BL s(-1). At the appropriate interval, either (i) muscle and blood samples were removed from the fish or (ii) fish were assessed for performance (i.e., fatigue time) during a fixed-interval swimming test. Low-speed swimming during recovery from exhaustive exercise resulted in significantly longer fatigue times compared with fish recovering in still water (i.e., 0 BL s(-1)). However, swimming during recovery did not expedite recovery of muscle lactate or blood variables (e.g., lactate, osmolarity, glucose). These observations suggest that metabolic recovery and subsequent swimming performance may not be directly linked and that other factors play a role in swimming recovery in brook trout.  相似文献

为了探讨集群性鱼类宽鳍鱲(Zacco platypus)的个性在群体中的生态学关联, 研究首先测定了宽鳍鱲的个性特征(包括活跃性、探索性、勇敢性和社会性)和标准代谢率。随后在群体(10个群体, 每群体6尾鱼)条件下测定了每尾鱼的运动轨迹、摄食状况, 并计算出每尾鱼的日总耗能。研究发现: 宽鳍鱲的个性特征与标准代谢率、摄食率和日总耗能均没有关联。个性与摄食率的关联丧失可能因为其野外生境食物丰度较高, 个性的差异未体现在对食物的竞争能力上; 而个性与能量代谢无关联可能与实验室单尾鱼测定条件下宽鳍鱲的应激反应有关。日总耗能与集群运动参数中的运动时间比、平均游泳速度和摄食率均呈正相关, 可能因为运动能耗和消化能耗在日总耗能中占比较高。另外, 日总耗能也与距质心距离正相关, 可能个性较积极的个体在群体中活跃程度较高, 集群时较多位于群体的边缘, 且日常能量消耗较高。研究结果表明, 集群时活跃的成员往往处于鱼群的外周, 食物占有能力更高, 但日常能量消耗也越多。研究还提示针对集群性野生鱼类, 可能在群体条件下考察其个性、能量代谢特征及其生态收益和代价更具生态学意义。  相似文献

Synopsis We document differences in the use of microhabitats, male courtship behavior, and swimming performance of populations from headwater and downstream sites in two rivers of the Oropuche drainage in Trinidad. Guppies from headwater sites used microhabitats with higher water velocities, had a higher swimming performance, and were less patchily distributed than guppies from downstream sites. Although males from the headwater and downstream sites had similar display rates, males from headwater sites displayed in microhabitats with higher velocities (riffles) whereas males in downstream sites courted in still pools. Subtle effects of female choice maintain the honesty of male courtship behavior in various microhabitats. In downstream sites, where predators impose a survivorship cost on ornamental males, swimming performance was positively correlated with area of carotenoid ornamentation. In headwater sites, males frequently displayed in fast-flowing water, thus paid a higher metabolic cost of courtship. Interactions between characteristics of the physical habitat and predation pressure not only affect the distribution of guppies, but also have subtle effects on the types of condition-dependent traits favored by females.  相似文献

为考察鲤科鱼类运动能力的个体变异和表型关联及不同加速度对匀加速游泳能力的影响, 研究在(25±0.5)℃条件下测定鲫(Carassius auratus)幼鱼的静止代谢率(Resting metabolic rate, RMR), 通过临界游泳速度(Critical swimming speed, Ucrit)法和过量耗氧(EPOC)法获取实验鱼的最大代谢率(Maximum metabolic rate, MMR)、代谢空间(Aerobic scope, AS=MMR-RMR)、相对代谢空间(Factorial aerobic scope, FAS=MMR/RMR)、Ucrit及步法转换速度(Gait transition speed, Ugt), 并在不同加速度(0.083、0.167、0.250、0.333 cm/s2)下测定鲫幼鱼的匀加速游泳能力(Constant accelerated test, Ucat)和Ugt。研究发现: 鲫幼鱼的MMR和AS与Ucrit均呈正相关, 但RMR与Ucrit不相关; 能量代谢参数(MMR、AS、RMR)与Ugt不相关。Ucrit法获取的MMR、AS、FAS与EPOC法均无平均值的显著性差异, 但2种方法获得的上述参数具有较高的个体重复性; 鲫幼鱼的能量代谢参数之间存在表型关联并且关联方向不尽相同。鲫幼鱼的Ucrit和Ugt均小于各加速度下的Ucat和Ugt, 加速度对Ucat测定无影响但对Ugt有影响。鲫幼鱼的Ugt与Ucrit或Ucat呈正相关, 并且其匀加速游泳能力参数在不同加速度下保持较高的重复性。除0.333 cm/s2外, 其他加速度下鲫幼鱼Ucat的无氧代谢组分(Ucat-Ugt)与Ucat呈正相关; 然而, 鲫幼鱼的有氧代谢组分(Ugt)与无氧代谢组分(Ucat-Ugt)呈负相关。研究表明: Ucrit法和EPOC法诱导鲫幼鱼的有氧代谢能力无方法学差异; 鲫幼鱼的能量代谢存在表型关联, 其匀加速游泳能力具有稳定个体差异, 并且该种鱼的有氧代谢与无氧代谢存在权衡。  相似文献

Using a large pan-European dataset, we compared least disturbed sites to sites impacted by human pressures across broad river types to assess which aspects of bio-ecological traits of the fish assemblage are most sensitive to alterations of the river ecosystem. To control for variation across river types and large-scale environmental gradients, we began by clustering the least disturbed sites (n = 716) into four homogenous fish assemblage types (FATs) differing by four fish metrics, i.e., lithophilic, rheophilic, omnivorous, and potamodromous fish. We predicted these FATs (headwater streams, medium gradient rivers, lowland rivers, and Mediterranean streams) using environmental variables, i.e., altitude, river slope, temperature, precipitation, latitude, and longitude for impacted sites in our dataset (n = 2,389). Using tests of sensitivity and intensity, 17 fish metrics showed a clear reaction to human pressures. However, 12 metrics responded exclusively within only one of the four FATs. Hence we observed a divergent reaction of fish metrics to human pressures in, e.g., headwater versus lowland rivers. Type-specific reactions are useful in customizing impact assessment for particular river types. It is of primary importance to understand the comparative sensitivity and efficiency of fish-based indicators of water quality for detecting human-induced degradation of river ecosystems.  相似文献

This study examines whether injections of the commonly used bacterial-challenge pathogen Listonella anguillarum (formerly Vibrio anguillarum) negatively impact the ability of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum to perform repeat swimming trials. Fish were given intraperitoneal injections of either a sub-lethal (10(5) colony forming units; CFUs) or a lethal (10(7) CFUs) dose of L. anguillarum, held for 48 h, and then given 2 successive ramp critical swimming speed (Ucrit) tests separated by 45 min. Compared with saline-injected control fish, the low-dose injection did not significantly impair swimming performance and recovery. Similarly, Ucrit and re-performance for fish surviving the high-dose injection were comparable to control (2 of 6 fish died after injection and before testing). In contrast, a positive control test of seawater challenge did impair recovery of swimming performance. In view of these results and common use of L. anguillarum as a challenge pathogen for toxicological studies, it seems unlikely that the consequences of pathogenesis impact the important cardiorespiratory changes associated with exercise.  相似文献

A comparative study has been made of the haptoral morphology of four species of diplozoon (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) from the gills of fish exposed to different levels of water pollution in two river systems in eastern Europe. An examination of the haptors of Paradiplozoon homoion (Bychowsky & Nagibina 1959), Paradiplozoon ergensi (Pejcoch 1968) and Paradiplozoon megan (Bychowsky & Nagibina 1959) from chub caught in the River Morava, Czech Republic and of Diplozoon paradoxum (Nordmann 1832) from bream recovered from the River Volga, Russia has revealed abnormalities to the attachment clamps. Two abnormal conditions were found: structural alterations to the attachment clamps and changes in the number of attachment clamps; these occurred both singly and in combination. A higher frequency of abnormal attachment clamps was found in diplozoons from fish caught in the more polluted localities of both rivers. The abnormalities have been recorded and their morphology compared in the light of conditions of environmental stress.  相似文献

We compared ancestral anadromous-marine and nonmigratory, stream-resident threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations to examine the outcome of relaxed selection on prolonged swimming performance. We reared marine and stream-resident fish from two locations in a common environment and found that both stream-resident populations had lower critical swimming speeds (U(crits) ) than marine populations. F1 hybrids from the two locations displayed significant differences in dominance, suggesting that the genetic basis for variation in U(crit) differs between locations. To determine which traits evolved in conjunction with, and may underlie, differences in performance capacity we measured a suite of traits known to affect prolonged swimming performance in fish. Although some candidate traits did not evolve (standard metabolic rate and two body shape traits), multiple morphological (pectoral fin size, shape, and four body shape measures) and physiological (maximum metabolic rate; MMR) traits evolved in the predicted direction in both stream-resident populations. However, data from F1 hybrids suggested that only one of these traits (MMR) had dominance effects similar to those of U(crit) in both locations. Overall, our data suggest that reductions in prolonged swimming performance were selected for in nonmigratory populations of threespine stickleback, and that decreases in MMR may mediate these reductions in performance.  相似文献

为考察鲤科鱼类种内个体标准代谢率的差异及其与运动性能和摄食性能的内在关联,本研究以我国广泛分布的鲤(Cyprinids cardio)幼鱼[体重(4.79±0.08)g,n=36]为实验对象,在(25.0±1.0)℃下分别测量实验鱼的标准代谢率(SMR),随后测定单尾鱼的特殊动力作用(SDA)、自发运动、临界游泳速度以及活跃代谢率(MO2active)。实验鱼标准代谢率(SMR)的变幅为76.7~317.6 mg/(kg·h),其变异系数(CV)达24.4%;实验鱼在10 min内的尾鳍摆动次数(P0.05)和摄食代谢峰值(P0.05)均与标准代谢率(SMR)呈正相关;活跃代谢率(MO2active)(P0.05)与摄食代谢峰值以及活跃代谢范围与摄食代谢范围(P0.05)均呈正相关。然而,鲤幼鱼的标准代谢率(SMR)与相对临界游泳速度、活跃代谢率(MO2active)、特殊动力作用(SDA)时间和特殊动力作用(SDA)总量均不相关(所有P0.05)。研究表明,较高标准代谢率(SMR)的鲤幼鱼个体表现较高的活跃性和较强的摄食代谢能力,可能有助于其更易发现食物、逃避天敌以及加快食物处理。  相似文献

Anadromous and stream resident Dolly Varden S. malma were compared in the contaminated and reference rivers across Kamchatka region. Anadromous Dolly Varden’s fry from the polluted and clean rivers were correspondently different by reduced growth rate and narrow length variability. It was observed that juveniles prefer to migrate from the polluted river sections; only seldom fry reaches the smoltification stage at the contaminated sites. The volcanogenic environmental pollution causes paedomorphosis and accelerated sexual maturation in the landlocked brook-dwelling populations. Either the growth rate or the length variability within the age groups were not reduced during the maturation period in the landlocked groups comparing with fish from reference streams. However the weakened individuals with an extremely low body weight were observed among the landlocked fish during maturing. Gonadosomatic index and relative fecundity were comparable for fish from polluted and clean rivers, though relatively high fecundity for the first group was attained by the oocytes size decreasing. Skin cover was damaged; Clark’s condition index and muscle fatness were reduced while liver size was enlarged in either landlocked or anadromous fishes from the polluted water-courses.  相似文献

Energy metabolism fuels swimming and other biological processes. We compared the swimming performance and energy metabolism within and across eight freshwater fish species. Using swim tunnel respirometers, we measured the standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and calculated the critical swimming speed (Ucrit). We accounted for body size, metabolic traits, and some morphometric ratios in an effort to understand the extent and underlying causes of variation. Body mass was largely the best predictor of swimming capacity and metabolic traits within species. Moreover, we found that predictive models using total length or SMR, in addition to body mass, significantly increased the explained variation of Ucrit and MMR in certain fish species. These predictive models also underlined that, once body mass has been accounted for, Ucrit can be independently affected by total length or MMR. This study exemplifies the utility of multiple regression models to assess within-species variability. At interspecific level, our results showed that variation in Ucrit can partly be explained by the variation in the interrelated traits of MMR, fineness, and muscle ratios. Among the species studied, bleak Alburnus alburnus performed best in terms of swimming performance and efficiency. By contrast, pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus showed very poor swimming performance, but attained lower mass-specific cost of transport (MCOT) than some rheophilic species, possibly reflecting a cost reduction strategy to compensate for hydrodynamic disadvantages. In conclusion, this study provides insight into the key factors influencing the swimming performance of fish at both intra- and interspecific levels.  相似文献
