Photosynthesis and respiration by the epilithic community on cobble in an arctic tundra stream, were estimated from oxygen production and consumption in short-term (4–12 h), light and dark, chamber incubations. Chlorophyll a was estimated at the end of each incubation by quantitatively removing the epilithon from the cobble. Fertilization of the river with phosphate alone moderately increased epilithic chlorophyll a, photosynthesis, and respiration. Fertilization with ammonium sulfate and phosphate, together, greatly increased each of these variables. Generally, under both control and fertilized conditions, epilithic chlorophyll a concentrations (mg m−2), photosynthesis, and respiration (mg O2 m−2, h−1) were higher in pools than in riffles. Under all conditions, the P/R ratio was consistent at ∼ 1.8 to 2.0. The vigor of epilithic algae in riffles, estimated from assimilation coefficients (mg O2 [mg Chl a]−1 h−1) was greater than the vigor of epilithic algae in pools. However, due to the greater accumulation of epilithic chlorophyll a in pools, total production (and respiration) in pools exceeded that in riffles. The epilithic community removed both ammonium and nitrate from water in chambers. Epilithic material, scoured by high discharge in response to storm events and suspended in the water column, removed ammonium and may have increased nitrate concentrations in bulk river water. However, these changes were small compared to the changes exerted by attached epilithon.  相似文献

Since litter input and availability of leaves in many streams is highly seasonal in Portugal, we investigated whether Sericostoma vittatum, a typical shredder, was able to grow using alternative food sources. To test this hypothesis we fed S. vittatum with Alnus glutinosa (alder, CPOM, coarse particulate organic matter), leaf powder from A. glutinosa and Acacia dealbata and FPOM (fine particulate organic matter) from a 5th and a >6th order river, the macrophyte Myriophyllum aquaticum and biofilm. Growth in S. vittatum was significantly influenced by the food item given (ANOVA, P = 0.0082). The food item promoting the highest growth was A. glutinosa, in the form of FPOM (6.48% day−1) and CPOM (4.24% day−1); all other forms of FPOM and biofilm provided relatively low growth rates (0.77–1.77% day−1). The macrophyte M. aquaticum was also used as food source by S. vittatum and promoted intermediate growth (1.96% day−1). Neither nitrogen, phosphorus nor caloric content was correlated with growth. However, since higher growth was achieved with alder, in the form of CPOM and FPOM, we concluded that the chemical content of food was more important for S. vittatum than the physical form of such food. This may partially explain why shredders are able to survive when leaves are scarce in streams. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) plants were grown in solution culture and stressed at three rates of decreasing leaf water potential (−0.123, −0.068 and −0.029 MPa day−1) achieved by the incremental addition of an osmoticum, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 to the solutions. Plants were also grown in soil and given different amounts of water which resulted in rates of decreasing leaf water potentials of −0.130 and −0.073 MPa day−1. The rate of stress and the culture system influenced the accumulation of solutes in the cell, but not cell volume. A rapid stress (−0.123 and −0.130 MPa day−1) to approximately −1.6 MPa leaf water potential resulted in 0.75 and 0.16 MPa of osmotic adjustment in the PEG and soil culture respectively. At moderate stress (−0.068 and −0.073 MPa day−1) respective values were 1.68 and 0.58 MPa. There were some visual symptoms in the solution grown plants characteristic of uptake of high molecular weight PEG. However the relative growth rates of these plants were equal to or greater than those of the soil grown plants. In view of the differences in plant water status of soil and PEG solution cultured plants it was concluded that the use of the latter system would not be entirely suitable for some studies of drought resistance in sorghum, as related to crop performance in the field.  相似文献

Biomass and aboveground net primary production (ANPP) in a monospecific pioneer stand of a mangrove Kandelia obovata (S., L.) Yong were quantified. The estimated biomasses in leaves, branches, stems, roots, aboveground and total were 5.61 (3.68%), 28.8 (18.9%), 46.1 (30.2%), 71.8 (47.2%), 80.5 (52.8%) and 152 Mg ha−1 (100%), respectively. Stem phytomass increment per tree was estimated using allometric relationships and stem analysis. Stem volume without bark of harvested trees showed a strong allometric relationship with D 0.12 H (D 0.1, diameter at a height of one-tenth of tree height H) (R 2 = 0.924). Annual stem volume increment per tree showed a strong allometric relationship with D 0.12 H (R 2 = 0.860). Litterfall rate ranges from 3.87 to 56.1 kg ha−1 day−1 for leaves and 0.177 to 46.2 kg ha−1 day−1 for branches. Seasonal changes of litterfall rate were observed, which showed a peak during wet season (August–September). Total annual litterfall was estimated as 10.6 Mg ha−1 year−1, in which 68.2% was contributed by the leaves. The ANPP in the K. obovata stand was 29.9–32.1 Mg ha−1 year−1, which is ca. 2.8–3.0 times of annual litterfall. The growth efficiency (aboveground biomass increment/LAI) was 5.35–5.98 Mg ha−1 year−1. The low leaf longevity (9.3 months) and high growth efficiency of K. obovata makes it a highly productive mangrove species.  相似文献

From 1996 to 2002, we measured litterfall, standing litter crop, and litter turnover rates in scrub, basin, fringe and riverine forests in two contrasting mangrove ecosystems: a carbonate-dominated system in the Southeastern Everglades and a terrigenous-dominated system in Laguna de Terminos (LT), Mexico. We hypothesized that litter dynamics is driven by latitude, geomorphology, hydrology, soil fertility and soil salinity stress. There were significant temporal patterns in LT with litterfall rates higher during the rainy season (2.4 g m−2 day−1) than during the dry season (1.8 g m−2 day−1). Total annual litterfall was significantly higher in the riverine forest (12.8 Mg ha−2 year−1) than in the fringe and basin forests (9.7 and 5.2 Mg ha−2 year−1, respectively). In Southeastern Everglades, total annual litterfall was also significantly higher during the rainy season than during the dry season. Spatially, the scrub forest had the lowest annual litterfall (2.5 Mg ha−2 year−1), while the fringe and basin had the highest (9.1 and 6.5 Mg ha−2 year−1, respectively). In LT, annual standing litter crop was 3.3 Mg ha−1 in the fringe and 2.2 Mg ha−1 in the basin. Litter turnover rates were significantly higher in the fringe mangrove forest (4.1 year−1) relative to the basin forests (2.2 year−1). At Southeastern Everglades there were significant differences in annual standing litter crop: 1.9, 3.3 and 4.5 Mg ha−1 at scrub, basin and fringe mangrove sites, respectively. Furthermore, turnover rates were similar at both basin and fringe mangrove types (2.1 and 2.0 year−1, respectively) but significantly higher than scrub mangrove forest (1.3 year−1). These findings suggest that litter export is important in regulating litter turnover rates in frequently flooded riverine and fringe forests, while in infrequently flooded basin forests, in situ litter decomposition controls litter turnover rates.  相似文献

The gene (vgb) encoding the hemoglobin (VHb) ofVitreoscilla sp. was cloned intoBurkholderia sp. and the effect of VHb on the growth characteristics of genetically engineeredBurkholderia (YV1) were compared with wild typeBurkholderia (R34) using continuous flow reactors (chemostat) at various dilution rates under aerobic conditions. Batch oxygen uptake rate showed that YV1 has much higher oxygen uptake rate than R34 (i.e. 0.63 mg O2/g biomass/min vs. 1.43 mg O2/g biomass/min for R34 and YV1 respectively at a dilution rate of 1.2 day−1). Monod parameters, maximum growth rate (μmax) and half saturation coefficient (Ks) were found to be 7.03 day−1 and 691 mg/L for R34 respectively, compared to 5.49 day−1 and 404 mg/L for YV1 respectively. At low dilution rates (<2.5 day−1), when the substrate is present in low concentrations, the growth yield was much higher in YV1 (0.52) than in R34 (0.37). Although substrate utilization rates were similar between R34 and YV1, the latter showed much higher oxygen uptake rate than did R34 at all dilution rates. When the stability of VHb was tested on agar plates containing 40 μg/L of kanamycin and 100 μg/L of ampicillin, vgb gene containing VHb plasmid in YV1 was stable over 82 days. When survivability under oxygen limited conditions was tested, R34 survived only for 11 days whereas YV1 survived over 25 days in liquid media; in agar plate experiments, R34 did not survive more than 40 days whereas more than 75% of YV1 survived over 110 days.  相似文献

We compared the abundance of litter categories (coarse particulate organic matter 1–16 mm, leaves >16 mm, and small woody detritus 16–100 mm) and macroinvertebrate assemblages between natural litter patches in pools and riffles in a headwater stream. Litter patches in pools were formed under conditions of almost no current (<6 cm s−1), but in riffles they were formed under variable current velocities (13–89 cm s−1). Although the abundance of each litter category exhibited seasonal change, leaves were more abundant in riffles, and coarse particulate organic matter and small woody detritus were more abundant in pools throughout the study period. Macroinvertebrate assemblages in pools and riffles also changed seasonally but distinctly differed from each other. Shredders, collector-gatherers, and predators were the dominant functional groups in abundance in both pools and riffles, but the dominant shredders were caddisflies in pools and stoneflies in riffles. It is considered that the hydraulic conditions affected macroinvertebrate assemblages directly and indirectly through influences on the characteristics of litter retained in the patches. Our results suggest that the relative abundance of litter patches in pools and riffles largely affects the macroinvertebrate community structure of the headwater stream. In order to determine the seasonal growth and biomass ofTrapa japonica Flerov, field observations were carried out at Ojaga-ike Pond, Chiba, Japan, during 1979 and 1980. In spring, the plant showed exponential growth (c. 0.080 g g−1 day−1) and shoot elongation was as rapid as 10 cm day−1. The plant attained its maximum biomass (380.5±35.1 g m−2) in late August, and about 50% of this was concentrated in the topmost 30-cm stratum (645.7±33.1 g m−3); maximum total stem length exceeded 6m. The plant produced large (500–800 mg per fruit), but small numbers of nut-like fruit (maximum, 5 fruits per rosette). Defoliation occurred almost linearly with time at a rate of 30.6 leaves m−2 day−1; annual net leaf production was estimated to be about twice as large as the seasonal maximum leaf biomass. While the number of leaves per rosette showed moderate seasonal change, rosette density, rosette area and leaf dry weight changed considerably during the year. From the negative log-log correlation between mean total leaf dry weight per rosette and rosette density, density-dependent rosette growth was assumed. The cause of the wide spread of this species in aquatic habitats is briefly discussed in terms of its seed size and morphology.  相似文献

Nutrient addition accelerates leaf breakdown in an alpine springbrook   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
This study assessed the effect of nutrient enrichment on organic matter breakdown in an alpine springbrook, using alder leaf packs to which phosphorus and nitrogen were added in the form of slow-release fertilizer briquettes. The breakdown of leaf packs with nutrients added (k=0.0284 day–1) was significantly faster than that of unfertilized packs (k=0.0137 day–1), resulting in a 30% higher mass loss after 42 days. Unfertilized leaves enclosed in fine-mesh bags broke down at an even slower rate (k=0.0062 day–1). Phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations were initially higher in leaf packs with nutrients added, but this difference disappeared within 3 weeks. Fungal biomass developing in decomposing leaves was substantial (c. 55 mg dry mass per 1 g leaf dry mass) although similar between fertilized and unfertilized packs, as was the sporulation activity of aquatic hyphomycetes. There was a significantly greater number and higher biomass of macroinvertebrates (shredding nemourid stoneflies in particular) on the fertilized packs, suggesting that the increased leaf mass loss was brought about by shredder feeding. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of an 18–22 year old forested watershed in western Maryland. We hypothesized that this watershed should not exhibit symptoms of N saturation. This watershed was a strong source of nitrate (NO3 ) to the stream in all years, with a mean annual export of 9.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 and a range of 4.4–18.4 kg N ha−1 year−1. During the 2001 and 2002 water years, wet deposition of inorganic N was 9.0 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 6.3 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. Watershed N export rates in 2001 and 2002 water years were 4.2 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 5.3 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. During the wetter water years of 2003 and 2004, the watershed exported 15.0 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 18.4 kg N ha−1 year−1, rates that exceeded annual wet deposition of N by a factor of two (7.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 in 2003) and three (5.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 in 2004). Consistent with the high rates of N export, were high concentrations (2.1–3.3%) of N in foliage, wood (0.3%) and fine roots, low C:N ratios in the forest floor (17–24) and mineral soil (14), high percentages (83–96%) of the amount of mineralized N that was nitrified and elevated N concentrations (up to 3 mg N l−1) in soil solution. Although this watershed contained a young aggrading forest, it exhibited several symptoms of N saturation commonly observed in more mature forests.  相似文献

A multilayer sediment-water exchange model was used to evaluate the importance of bioturbation in the profundal sediments of L. Esrom. The temporal variation of the vertical distribution of sedimentary phosphorus fractions was modelled with an objective function of 1.50. Deviations between measured and simulated values occurred in the spring, where the measured pool of sedimentary phosphorus sharply declined in the surface sediments. The application of a model for the activity ofChironomus anthracinus based on biomass, oxygen consumption and temperature improved the model in the spring period. The downwards transport of easy-degradable surface sediments reduced the average release of sedimentary phosphorus from 12 mg P · m−2 · day−1 to 11 mg P · M−2 · day−1. The introduction of a similar model for the other important burrowing species in L. Esrom,Potamothrix hammoniensis, lowered the objective function to 1.37 and increased the average release to 12.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1. The minor role of bioturbation in sediment processes is discussed.  相似文献

The deposition and cycling of carbon and nitrogen in carbonate sediments located between coral reefs on the northern and central sections of the Great Barrier Reef were examined. Rates of mass sediment accumulation ranged from 1.9 kg m−2 year−1 (inshore reefs) to 2.1–4.9 kg m−2 year−1 (between mid-shelf reefs); sedimentation was minimal off outer-shelf reefs. Rates of total organic carbon decomposition ranged from 1.7 to 11.4 mol C m−2 year−1 and total nitrogen mineralization ranged from 77 to 438 mmol N m−2 year−1, declining significantly with distance from land. Sediment organic matter was highly reactive, with mineralization efficiencies ranging from 81 to 99% for organic carbon and 64–100% for nitrogen, with little C and N burial. There was no evidence of carbonate dissolution/precipitation in short-term incubation experiments. Rates of sulfate reduction (range 0–3.4 mmol S m−2 day−1) and methane release (range 0–12.8 μmol CH4 m−2 day−1) were minor or modest pathways of carbon decomposition. Aerobic respiration, estimated by difference between total O2 consumption and the sum of the other pathways, accounted for 55–98% of total carbon mineralization. Rates of ammonification ranged from 150 to 1,725 μmol NH4 m−2 day−1, sufficient to support high rates of denitrification (range 30–2,235 μmol N2 m−2 day−1). N2O release was not detected and rates of NH4 + and NO2 + NO3 efflux were low, indicating that most mineralized N was denitrified. The percentage of total N input removed via denitrification averaged ≈75% (range 28–100%) with little regenerated N available for primary producers. Inter-reef environments are therefore significant sites of energy and nutrient flow, especially in spatially complex reef matrices such as the Great Barrier Reef.  相似文献

Sandy clay loam soil was contaminated with 5000 mg kg−1 diesel, and amended with nitrogen (15.98 atom% 15N) at 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 to determine gross rates of nitrogen transformations during diesel biodegradation at varying soil water potentials. The observed water potential values were −0.20, −0.47, −0.85, and −1.50 MPa in the 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments respectively. Highest microbial respiration occurred in the lowest nitrogen treatment suggesting an inhibitory osmotic effect from higher rates of nitrogen application. Microbial respiration rates of 185, 169, 131, and 116 mg O2 kg−1 soil day−1 were observed in the 250, 500, control and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Gross nitrification was inversely related to water potential with rates of 0.2, 0.04, and 0.004 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Reduction in water potential did not inhibit gross nitrogen immobilization or mineralization, with respective immobilization rates of 2.2, 1.8, and 1.8 mg N kg−1 soil day−1, and mineralization rates of 0.5, 0.3, and 0.3 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the 1000, 500, and 250 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. Based on nitrogen transformation rates, the duration of fertilizer contribution to the inorganic nitrogen pool was estimated at 0.9, 1.9, and 3.2 years in the 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1 nitrogen treatments, respectively. The estimation was conservative as ammonium fixation, gross nitrogen immobilization, and nitrification were considered losses of fertilizer with only gross mineralization of organic nitrogen contributing to the most active portion of the nitrogen pool.  相似文献

Fish <1 year old were sampled during 1 year using nets inshore at South Georgia. Some fish were kept in aquaria. Growth rates were estimated using the exponential model. During June to October 1980, field growth rates of Parachaenichthys georgianus and Champsocephalus gunnari were 0.33 and 0.48% SL day−1, respectively. Gobionotothen marionensis (1979 cohort) grew at 0.40% SL day−1 during June to November in the field, and 0.34% SL day−1 in the laboratory from September to March. Notothenia coriiceps grew at 0.28% SL day−1 in the laboratory during September to March. During November to December, Artedidraco mirus grew at 0.82% SL day−1 in the field. The 1980 cohort of G. marionensis grew at 1.39% SL day−1 during November to January in the field. During January, the field growth rate of G. gibberifrons was 1.39% SL day−1. Growth rates increased three-fold from winter to summer. Temperature can only explain one-half of this range in growth rates, whereas all of this range can be explained by food availability. Therefore, seasonal food resource limitation has a major effect on Antarctic fish growth. Received: 30 June 1997 / Accepted: 7 September 1997  相似文献

The present study examines relative growth rate (RGR) and its determinants in seedlings of nine Eucalyptus species. Species were selected from mesic (1,800 mm a−1 rainfall) through to semi-arid habitats (300 mm a−1), and thus, notionally vary in “stress” tolerance. Seedlings were grown in a glasshouse during early summer and received between 33 mol and 41 mol PAR m−2 day−1 . The mean RGR varied among species—from a minimum of 66 mg g−1 day−1 in E. hypochlamydea to a maximum of 106 mg g−1 day−1 in E. delegatensis. RGR was positively related to rainfall at the sites of seed collection. Neither specific leaf area (SLA) nor net assimilation rate was related to rainfall or RGR. While the absence of relationships with SLA and net assimilation rate contrasts with other studies and species, we cannot rule out the effects of sample size (n=9 species) and modest ranges in SLA and RGR. The ratio of leaf mass to total mass (LMR) varied from 0.49±0.07 g g−1 in E. socialis to 0.74±0.04 g g−1 in E. delegatensis and was strongly positively related with rainfall (r 2=0.77). Interspecific differences in RGR were strongly related to LMR (positive relationship, r 2=0.50) and the rate of dry matter production per mol of leaf nitrogen (positive relationship, r 2=0.64). Hence, the slow RGR of low-rainfall species was functionally related to a lower growth rate per mol of leaf nitrogen than high-rainfall species. Furthermore, slow RGR of low-rainfall species was related to greater allocation to roots at the expense of leaves. Increasing allocation to roots versus leaves is likely an adaptation to soil and atmospheric water deficits, but one that comes at the expense of a slow RGR.  相似文献

The growth, biofiltering efficiency and uptake rates of Ulva clathrata were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, receiving waste water directly from a shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture pond, under constant aeration and two different water regimes: (1) continuous flow, with 1 volume exchange a day (VE day-1) and (2) static regime, with 1 VE after 4 days. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (PO4), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS), macroalgal biomass (fresh weight) and tissue nutrient assimilation were monitored over 12 days. Ulva clathrata was highly efficient in removing the main inorganic nutrients from effluent water, stripping 70–82% of the total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and 50% PO4 within 15 h. Reductions in control tanks were much lower (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). After 3 days, the mean uptake rates by the seaweed biomass under continuous flow were 3.09 mg DIN g DW day−1 (383 mg DIN m−2 day−1) and 0.13 mg PO4 g DW day−1 (99 mg PO4 m−2 day−1), being significantly higher than in the static regime (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). The chl-a decreased in seaweed tanks, suggesting that U. clathrata inhibited phytoplankton growth. Correlations between the cumulative values of DIN removed from the water and total nitrogen assimilated into the seaweed biomass (r = 0.7 and 0.8, P < 0.05), suggest that nutrient removal by U. clathrata dominated over other processes such as phytoplankton and bacterial assimilation, ammonia volatilization and nutrient precipitation.  相似文献

The nutrient (P and N species) and chloride budgets were investigated in a representative floodplain in the seasonal wetlands of the Okavango Delta, Botswana. A variety of sources of nutrients in the surface water were considered, namely ion species coming with the floodwater, those generated from dry floodplain soils and those from water-soluble dust deposition (both local and long-range sources). Concentrations of total-nitrogen and chloride in surface water were below 1 mg l−1. Total-phosphorus concentrations were 0.05 mg l−1, reflecting the oligotrophic character of the system. Dust deposition rates were highest for chloride at 2.44 g m−2 year−1 followed by 0.79 g m−2 year−1 for total-N, 0.40 g m−2 year−1 for ammonia and only 0.02 g m−2 year−1 for total-P, respectively. Chloride was derived primarily from long-range transport, while N and P species were of more local origin. Dissolution rates for these ions combined were calculated to be 3.9 g m−2 for the flooded area in the 1999 season and thus all dry deposits must be re-dissolved. The accumulation of dust deposits on dry surfaces and their subsequent dissolution causes 2–5 times higher concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and chloride with the onset of the flood, thus boosting the nutrient stock in the crucial phase of the onset of flooding. Chloride dissolved from dry soil surfaces and dust contributed approximately 40% to the overall floodplain budget. Although contributions from the soil surface and dust to the nitrogen and phosphorus pools of the floodplain are less prominent (with 10% of total), they nonetheless represent a significant source of nutrients in the entire system. Extrapolation to annually flooded swamps (10,000 km2) indicates a maximum contribution of 40% for total-nitrogen and 60% for total-phosphorus from dust deposition on wet or dry surfaces to the nutrient pool of the water body.  相似文献

In the Cerrado region of Brazil conventional soybean monoculture is since the 1980s being replaced by direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC) with two crops per year and absence of tillage practices. The objective of this study was to assess the long-term impact of DMC on soil organic matter accumulation and nitrogen (N) mineralization. Measurements of soil organic carbon (C) content, soil total N content and soil N mineralization, both under laboratory conditions using disturbed soil samples and under field conditions using intact soil cores were conducted on a chronosequence of 2-, 6-, 9- and 14-year-old DMC fields (DMC-2, DMC-6, DMC-9 and DMC-14, respectively). The average increase of organic C in the 0–30 cm topsoil layer under DMC was 1.91 Mg C ha−1 year−1. Soil total N increased with 103 kg N ha−1 year−1 (0–30 cm). The potential N mineralization rate under laboratory conditions (28°C, 75% of soil moisture at field capacity) was 0.27, 0.28, 0.39 and 0.36 mg N kg soil−1 day−1 for, respectively, the DMC-2, DMC-6, DMC-9 and DMC-14 soils. The corresponding specific N mineralization rates were 0.16, 0.15, 0.22 and 0.17 mg N g N−1 day−1. There was no obvious explanation for the higher specific N mineralization rate of soils under DMC-9, given the similar soil conditions and land-use history before DMC was introduced. Results from the in situ N incubation experiments were in good agreement with those from the laboratory incubations. We estimated that soil N mineralization increases with about 2.0 kg N ha−1 year−1 under DMC. The increase was mainly attributed to the larger soil total N content. These results indicate that even in the medium term (10 years), continuous DMC cropping has limited implications for N fertilization recommendations, since the extra soil N supply represents less than 20% of the common N fertilization dose for maize in the region.  相似文献

The paper describes the biomass and productivity of maple (Acer cappadocicum) forest occurring at an altitude of 2,750 m in the west central Himalayas. Total vegetation biomass was 308.3 t ha−1, of which the tree layer contributed the most, followed by herbs and shrubs. The seasonal forest-floor litter mass varied between 5.4 t ha−1 (in rainy season) and 6.6 t ha−1 (in winter season). The annual litter fall was 6.2 t ha−1, of which leaf litter contributed the largest part (59% of the total litter fall). Net primary productivity of total vegetation was 19.5 t ha−1 year−1. The production efficiency of leaves (net primary productivity/leaf mass) was markedly higher (2.9 g g−1 foliage mass year−1) than those of the low-altitude forests of the region.  相似文献

A simple, physiologically based model was devised and used for estimating the respiration rate and the overall conversion efficiency of photosynthate into the grain dry-matter in dehydrated plants relative to well watered controls. The model described mathematically the partitioning of assimilate produced by current photosynthesis and of assimilate stored previously between the grain and those plants parts other than grain (the “straw”). Using data obtained from the dry-matter analysis and CO2 gas exchange measurements, the model gave us two independent estimates of the respiration rate and the overall conversion efficiency; one for the plants given a prolonged dark period and the other for those grown in a normal light and dark cycle. The rate of dark respiration increased with mild water stress: 4.3 mg g−1 day−1 in control plants with leaf water potential of around −0.4 MPa and 11.3 mg g−1 day−1 in dehydrated plants with leaf water potential of around −1 MPa, when both the control and dehydrated plants were left in the dark for ten days. Similar values were obtained for plants in a normal light and dark cycle: 5.6 in well watered and 8.1 mg g−1 day−1 in the stressed plants. Accordingly, the overall conversion efficiency (the ratio of grain dry-matter against the gross carbohydrate input to the construction and maintenance processes) was 0.7 to 0.8 for the well hydrated control and 0.4 to 0.5 for moderately dehydrated plants. With increasing water deficits, however, the respiration rate decreased: 4.8 mg g−1 day−1 when plants were severely stressed (below −3 MPa in midday leaf water potential). The decrease in straw dry weight alone overestimates dry-matter partition of the stored assimilate in the straw into grain by 20 to 30% in well watered plants and the error increases to 50 to 60% in more dehydrated plants.  相似文献
