Abstract

Two types of glandular hairs have been found in Cistus laurifolius L. (Cistaceae). Both types present a great degree of morphological and histochemical variability, not only at population level but even within a single plant. This fact excludes that the hairs of C. laurifolius could be given a diagnostic value. The two hair types have a mixed hydrophilous and lipophilous secretion in which we have identified, especially in one type of them, cathecolic tannins. The powerful antimycotic activity of such tannins, makes the hairs particularly interesting for the possible ecological implications.  相似文献

Observations were made on the role of glandular leaf hairs of four tomato cultivars in trapping cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, adults. Dead, trapped whitefly occurred in similar numbers on both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves even though glandular hairs were denser on the former. Females constituted 58% of untrapped but 86% of trapped adults, many becoming trapped during oviposition which occurred mainly on the lower surfaces. Of the four cultivars studied, Strain B trapped more whitefly than Ace, Marglobe or Moneymaker.  相似文献

Secretion produced by glandular hairs is deposited mainly in the periplasmic space of the head cells. It stains intensely for both proteins and polysaccharides. The ultrastructure of meristematic, differentiating, mature and senescent head cells as well as the stalk and basal cells has been described in comparison to that in other cell types of the leaf. The specific features of the head cells are the proliferation of the granular endoplasmic reticulum as well as the multiplication of the dictyosomes and mitochondria during transition to the secretion stage. However, the frequency of dictyosomes varies among secreting hairs. The ER produces neither secretory nor transition vesicles and does not anastomose with the plasmalemma. In the absence of transition vesicles, the transport of secretory proteins and enzymes of polysaccharide synthesis from the ER to dictyosomes apparently includes the cytosolic step. Dictyosomes, though not appearing hypersecretory, produce two types of smooth secretory vesicles generated by the trans Golgi reticulum. The vectorial transfer of prosecretion and membranes across the dictyosome stack proceeds via the transport (shuttle) vesicles. It is, therefore, concluded that exocytosis of smooth secretory Golgi vesicles is the sole mechanism of release of both proteins and polysaccharides. Coated vesicles occasionally seen near the plasmalemma are likely to be involved in the endocytotic membrane retrieval. The secretion product disappears during senescence of the hairs and the secretory cells undergo vacuolation by means of local autophagy.  相似文献

菱的腺毛由单列圆筒状细胞组成,具有短暂的分泌功能。它们起源于叶片远轴面、叶柄的表皮细胞以及苗端茎轴、花柄的表皮细胞。处于分泌期的腺毛细胞其胞质浓厚,液泡化程度小,细胞具丰富的线粒体、高尔基体。腺毛丧失了分泌功能后即发育成为表皮毛。粘液物质由高尔基体分泌小泡携带至腺毛细胞侧壁,经胞吐与渗透结合的方式分泌至细胞外,粘液的化学成分主要为多糖。  相似文献

Pedipalps are the most versatile appendages of arachnids. They can be equipped with spines (Amblypygi), chelae (Scorpiones), or adhesive pads (Solifugae), all of which are modifications to grasp and handle fast‐moving prey. Harvestmen (Opiliones) show a high diversity of pedipalpal morphologies. Some are obviously related to prey capture, like the enlargement and heavy spination of Laniatores pedipalps. Many Dyspnoi, by contrast, exhibit thin, thread‐like pedipalps that are covered with complex glandular setae (clavate setae). These extrude viscoelastic glue that is used to immobilize prey items. Comparable setae (plumose setae) have previously been found in representatives of both Eupnoi and Dyspnoi, yet comprehensive data on their distribution are lacking. This study examined the distribution and ultrastructure of glandular setae in harvestmen and related them to pedipalpal morphology. Pedipalpal and setal characters were analysed in a phylogenetic framework. We found that glandular setae are synapomorphic for and widespread in the Palpatores clade (Eupnoi plus Dyspnoi). Their occurrence correlates with pedipalp morphology and feeding habit. Remnants of arthropod cuticular structures or secretions, frequently found attached to glandular setae, and behavioural observations, underlined the importance of the setae for capturing and securing prey. We hypothesize that glandular setae evolved as an adaptation to capture small and agile prey, which are hard to catch with a capture basket. Details of ultrastructure indicate that the setae are derived sensilla chaetica, with both a secretory and sensory function. Derived ultrastructural characters of the glandular setae, such as slit‐like channel openings and a globular arrangement of the microtrichia, may increase their effectiveness. The functional role of further pedipalpal modifications, such as apophyses, stalked and hyperbendable joints, and curved segments, as well as sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic polymorphism, are discussed. Some implications of the results obtained for the taxonomic treatment of Phalangiidae are also discussed. These results shed new light on the biology and evolutionary history of this fascinating group of arthropods.  相似文献

The course of development of the glandular and non-glandular hairs of Avicennia marina was found to be the same up to the three-celled stage. The further cell divisions of the two types of developing hairs differed in their orientation. In the non-glandular hair the cells continued to divide transversely, whereas in the glandular hair the uppermost of the three cells divided longitudinally.
In the mature hairs of both types, the peripheral wall of the cell just above the basal cell was heavily cutinized. The existence of narrow canals in the cuticle of the secretory cells of the glandular hairs was confirmed. The homology of the glandular and non-glandular hairs is discussed and it is concluded that the two types are phylogenetically related.  相似文献

The types, structure and distribution of glandular hairs on the calyx of Rosmarinus officinalis at different stages of development were studied by light (UV and conventional) and scanning electron microscopy. Two morphologically distinct types of glandular hairs (peltate and capitate) are described. Seeds of 201 species of 83 genera in the Gramineae were collected from the tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, and the temperate region of China. Pure live seeds of each species were sown in plastic pots, which were filled with the mixture of sand and bits of rotted wood (4:1). Seeded pots were kept in greenhouse at temperature of 20—25°C , and were arranged at random with four replications in each of the two treatments of sowing depth, 10 mm and 0 mm. The seedlings were taken as samples for examining 60 morphological and microscopic characters (Appendix), when they grew to the three-leaved stage. Cluster analysis was made using 60 seedling characters with the 201 species as OTUs. As a result, four clusters are recognized as follows. Cluster 1. Festucoid: The group consisted of all the species of the subfamily Festucoideae, the species of the genera Stipa, Achnatherum, Danthonia and Aristida in the subfamily Arundinoideae, and those of the genus Microlaena in the subfamily Bambusoideae. The seedling mesocotyl elongated or not, but not elongated when grew under light. Mesocotyl roots absent. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots or coleoptile node roots dominant. The first leaf narrowly linear, erect, acute at the apex, twisting clockwise or counterclockwise; blade and sheath 3—5-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 61.65 on an average; The second and third leaves narrowly linear, acute or acuminate at the apex. The coleoptile 13.04mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the third leaf emerged. Cluster 2. Panicoid: All the species of the subfamily Panicoideae, the species of the genera Eriachne and Monachather in the subfamily Arundinoideae, and the genus Enneapogon in the subfamily Eragrostidoideae were included in this group. The seedling mesocotyl elongated, even if growing under light. Mesocotyl roots present and dominant. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots absent. The first leaf oblong-lanceolate, oblong-oblanceolate or spathulate, ascendent or horizontal, acuminate or obtuse at apex, not twisting; blade and sheath over 7-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 8.95 on an average. The second and third leaves linear-lanceolate, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex. Coleoptile 5.29mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the fifth leaf emerged. Cluster 3. Bambusoideae: This group included the species in the subfamily Bambusoideae except those in the genus Microlaena. The first and second leaves without blade in the supertribe Bambusanae. The mesocotyl not elongated. Scutellum and coleorhiza node roots, and coleoptile node roots completely absent, only primary root developed. The mesocotyl elongated, mesocotyl roots absent and coleoptile roots dominant in the supertribe Oryzanae. The blade of the first leaf suppresed, but the second and third leaves both with blade and sheath. Cluster 4. Eragrostidoid: The cluster contained the species in the subfamily Eragrostidoideae except those in the genus Enneapogon. The seedling mesocotyl elongated, but not elongated when grew under light. The mesocotyl roots mostly absent, while the coleoptile node roots dominant. The first leaf linear, almost ascendent, acute at the apex, not twisting, blade and sheath 5—7 (9)-nerved, with the blade length/width ratio 11.69 on an average. The second and third leaves linear, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, acuminate at the apex. The coleoptile 2.60 mm long on an average. The first tiller appeared when the fifth leaf emerged. The species of the subfamily Arundinoideae were divided into four clusters. The results showed that the Arundinoideae could be considered as primitive member of the family, from which the subfamilies Panicoideae, Eragrostidoideae and Festucoideae are derived and specialized. With exception of a few cases, species in a genus were generally clustered into one unit and grouped into a subcluster unit. Seedling characters, like other taxonomic characters, are of importanttaxonomic significance, and could be used in classification of the Gramineae.  相似文献

The behaviour of fossil organisms can typically be inferred only indirectly, but rare fossil finds can provide surprising insights. Here, we report from the Eocene Messel Pit Fossil Site between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, Germany numerous pairs of the fossil carettochelyid turtle Allaeochelys crassesculpta that represent for the first time among fossil vertebrates couples that perished during copulation. Females of this taxon can be distinguished from males by their relatively shorter tails and development of plastral kinesis. The preservation of mating pairs has important taphonomic implications for the Messel Pit Fossil Site, as it is unlikely that the turtles would mate in poisonous surface waters. Instead, the turtles initiated copulation in habitable surface waters, but perished when their skin absorbed poisons while sinking into toxic layers. The mating pairs from Messel are therefore more consistent with a stratified, volcanic maar lake with inhabitable surface waters and a deadly abyss.  相似文献

Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to investigate the levels and pattern of genetic variation within and among populations of Pteroceltis tatarinowii Maxim., an endangered plant endemic to China. Of the 76 primers screened, 11 produced highly reproducible ISSR bands. A total of 118 bands were presented from the 11 selected primers across all individuals of five natural populations, corresponding to an average of 10.73 bands per primer. The size of the ISSR bands ranged from 200 to 2,000 bp. The percentage of polymorphic loci at the population level ranged from 77.97 to 86.44%, with an average value of 82.54%. Genetic differentiation among populations was revealed based on Nei’s genetic diversity analysis (19.41%) and the nonparametric analysis of molecular variance (20.62%). The Mantel test showed a significant positive correlation between geographic distance and genetic distance (r = 0.7758, P < 0.05), indicating a role of geographic isolation in shaping the present population genetic structure of P. tatarinowii. The size of the natural populations of P. tatarinowii was noted in field observations to be very small, chiefly owing to habitat destruction and overexploitation in the past decades. Therefore, effective measures for preserving genetic diversity of this species at the population level are needed and should include protecting its natural habitats and increasing the numbers of individuals. To meet the commercial demand for this species, P. tatarinowii plantations and cultivation facilities should be established as an alternative source of raw materials.  相似文献
