A laboratory-scale study was conducted in a 20.0-L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to explore the feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic carbon and nitrogen from abattoir wastewater. The reactor was operated under three different combinations of aerobic-anoxic sequence, viz., (4+4), (5+3), and (5+4) h of total react period, with influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) level of 2200 ± 50 and 125 ± 5 mg L?1, respectively. In (5+4) h cycle, a maximum 90.27% of ammonia reduction corresponding to initial NH4+-N value of 122.25 mg L?1 and 91.36% of organic carbon removal corresponding to initial SCOD value of 2215.25 mg L?1 have been achieved, respectively. The biokinetic parameters such as yield coefficient (Y), endogenous decay constant (kd), and half-velocity constant (Ks) were also determined to improve the design and operation of package effluent treatment plants comprising SBR units. The specific denitrification rate (qDN) during anoxic condition was estimated as 6.135 mg N/g mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS)·h on 4-h average contact period. The value of Y, kd and Ks for carbon oxidation and nitrification were found to be in the range of 0.6225–0.6952 mg VSS/mg SCOD, 0.0481–0.0588 day?1, and 306.56–320.51 mg L?1, and 0.2461–0.2541 mg VSS/mg NH4+-N, 0.0324–0.0565 day?1, and 38.28–50.08 mg L?1, respectively, for different combinations of react periods.  相似文献

A quantitative real-time PCR (QPCR) assay with the TaqMan system was used to quantify 16S rRNA genes of β-proteobacterial ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in a batch nitrification bioreactor. Five different sets of primers, together with a TaqMan probe, were used to quantify the 16S rRNA genes of β-proteobacterial AOB belonging to the Nitrosomonas europaea, Nitrosococcus mobilis, Nitrosomonas nitrosa, and Nitrosomonas cryotolerans clusters, and the genus Nitrosospira. We also used PCR followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), cloning, and sequencing of their 16S rRNA genes to identify the AOB species. Seed sludge from an industrial wastewater treatment process controlling high-strength nitrogen wastewater (500 mg/L NH4 +–N) was used as the inoculum for subsequent batch experiment. The Nitrosomonas nitrosa cluster was the predominant AOB (2.3 × 105 copies/mL) in the start-up period of the batch experiment. However, from the exponential growth period, the Nitrosomonas europaea cluster was the most abundant AOB, and its 16S rRNA gene copy number increased to 8.9 × 106 copies/mL. The competitive dominance between the two AOB clusters is consistent with observed differences in ammonia tolerance and substrate affinity. Analysis of the DGGE results indicated the presence of Nitrosomonas europaea ATCC19718 and Nitrosomonas nitrosa Nm90, consistent with the QPCR results.  相似文献

Riparian zones are an important strategy to mitigate N and P export to streams. However, their efficiency with respect to nitrate (NO3 ?), ammonium (NH4 +), or soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in groundwater remains uncertain in the US Midwest. This study investigates water table fluctuations and NO3 ?, NH4 +, and SRP concentration dynamics in two riparian zone types (outwash vs. glacial till) common in the upper US Midwest. During low water table periods, NO3 ? removal was 93 % at WR (outwash site), and 75 % at LWD (glacial till site); but during high water table periods, NO3 ? removal efficiencies dropped to 50 % at WR, and 14 % at LWD. Median seasonal mass fluxes of NO3 ? removed at WR (9.4–21.7 mg N day?1 m?1 of stream length) and LWD (0.4–1.9 mg N day?1 m?1) were small compared to other riparian zones in glaciated landscapes. The WR site was a small SRP sink (0.114 and 0.118 mg day?1 m?1 during the dry period and wet period, respectively), while LWD acted as a small SRP source to the stream (0.004 mg day?1 m?1 during the dry period; 0.075 mg day?1 m?1 during the wet period). Both LWD and WR acted as sources of NH4 + to the stream with mass fluxes ranging from 0.17 to 7.75 mg N day?1 m?1. Although riparian zones in the US Midwest provide many ecosystem services, results suggest they are unlikely to efficiently mitigate N and P pollution in subsurface flow.  相似文献

The membraneless bioelectrochemical reactor (Ml-BER) is useful for dark hydrogen fermentation. The effect of the electrochemical reaction on microorganisms in the Ml-BER was investigated using glucose as the substrate and compared with organisms in a membraneless non-bioelectrochemical reactor (Ml-NBER) and bioelectrochemical reactor (BER) with a proton exchange membrane. The potentials on the working electrode of the Ml-BER and BER with membrane were regulated to ?0.9 V (versus Ag/AgCl) to avoid water electrolysis with a carbon electrode. The Ml-BER showed suppressed methane production (19.8?±?9.1 mg-C·L?1·day?1) and increased hydrogen production (12.6?±?3.1 mg-H·L?1·day?1) at pHout 6.2?±?0.1, and the major intermediate was butyrate (24.9?±?2.4 mM), suggesting efficient hydrogen fermentation. In contrast, the Ml-NBER showed high methane production (239.3?±?17.9 mg-C·L?1·day?1) and low hydrogen production (0.2?±?0.0 mg-H·L?1·day?1) at pHout 6.3?±?0.1. In the cathodic chamber of the BER with membrane, methane production was high (276.3?±?20.4 mg-C·L?1·day?1) (pHout, 7.2?±?0.1). In the anodic chamber of the BER with membrane (anode-BER), gas production was low because of high lactate production (43.6?±?1.7 mM) at pHout 5.0?±?0.1. Methanogenic archaea were not detected in the Ml-BER and anode-BER. However, Methanosarcina sp. and Methanobacterium sp. were found in Ml-NBER. Prokaryotic copy numbers in the Ml-BER and Ml-NBER were similar, as were the bacterial community structures. Thus, the electrochemical reaction in the Ml-BER affected hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogens, but not the bacterial community.  相似文献

Here we report on a controlled environment experiment in which we applied 13C- and 15N-enrichment approaches to quantify methane oxidation rates and source partition N2O production in a silt loam soil following application of NH4NO3, enabling us to look for potential interactions between methane oxidation and nitrifier-N2O production. 15N-N2O, 14+15N-N2O and CO2 fluxes and mineral N concentrations were measured over a 23-day period after application of NH4NO3 (5 at.% excess 15N) at rates of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 g N m?2 to a silt loam soil. Change in 12/13C-CH4 concentrations (as indicative of 13C-CH4 oxidation rates) and production of 13C-CO2 were monitored over the first 72 h after addition of 1.7 ??l 13C-CH4 l?1 (10 at.% excess 13C) to these N treatments. Oxidation of applied 13C-CH4 was slower in the 5, 10, 20 and 30 g N m?2 (5 at.% excess 15N) treatments (0.24?C0.32 ??g 13C-CH4 l?1 day?1) than in the control (0.40 ??g 13C-CH4 l?1 day?1), suggesting that these N loadings inhibited oxidation. N2O production was raised after N addition, and in the 10, 20 and 30 g N m?2 treatments nitrification was the predominant source of N2O accounting for 61, 83 and 57% of the total 15N-N2O produced, respectively. Our results point towards the possibility of methylotrophs switching function to oxidise ammonia in the presence of N, which may result in greater atmospheric loading of both CH4 and N2O.  相似文献

Background

Although plant growth in alpine steppes on the Tibetan Plateau has been suggested to be sensitive to nitrogen (N) addition, the N limitation conditions of alpine steppes remain uncertain.

Methods

After 2 years of fertilization with NH4NO3 at six rates (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1), the responses of plant and soil parameters as well as N2O fluxes were measured.

Results

At the vegetation level, N addition resulted in an increase in the aboveground N pool from 0.5?±?0.1 g m?2 in the control plots to 1.9?±?0.2 g m?2 in the plots at the highest N input rate. The aboveground C pool, biomass N concentration, foliar δ15N, soil NO3 ?-N and N2O flux were also increased by N addition. However, as the N fertilization rate increased from 10 kg N ha?1 yr?1 to 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1, the N-use efficiency decreased from 12.3?±?4.6 kg C kg N?1 to 1.6?±?0.2 kg C kg N?1, and the N-uptake efficiency decreased from 43.2?±?9.7 % to 9.1?±?1.1 %. Biomass N:P ratios increased from 14.4?±?2.6 in the control plots to 20.5?±?0.8 in the plots with the highest N input rate. Biomass N:P ratios, N-uptake efficiency and N-use efficiency flattened out at 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. Above this level, soil NO3 ?-N began to accumulate. The seasonal average N2O flux of growing season nonlinearly increased with increased N fertilization rate and linearly increased with the weighted average foliar δ15N. At the species level, N uptake responses to relative N availability were species-specific. Biomass N concentration of seven out of the eight non-legume species increased significantly with N fertilization rates, while Kobresia macrantha and the one legume species (Oxytropics glacialis) remained stable. Both the non-legume and the legume species showed significant 15N enrichment with increasing N fertilization rate. All non-legume species showed significant increased N:P ratios with increased N fertilization rate, but not the legume species.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the Tibetan alpine steppes might be N-saturated above a critical N load of 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. For the entire Tibetan Plateau (ca. 2.57 million km2), a low N deposition rate (10 kg N ha?1 yr?1) could enhance plant growth, and stimulate aboveground N and C storage by at least 1.1?±?0.3 Tg N yr?1 and 31.5?±?11.8 Tg C yr?1, respectively. The non-legume species was N-limited, but the legume species was not limited by N.  相似文献

Myall Lakes has experienced algal blooms in recent years which threaten water quality. Biomarkers, benthic fluxes measured with chambers, and pore water metabolites were used to identify the nature and reactivity of organic matter (OM) in the sediments of Bombah Broadwater (BB), and the processes controlling sediment-nutrient release into the overlying waters. The OM in the sediments was principally from algal sources although terrestrial OM was found near the Myall River. Terrestrial faecal matter was identified in muddy sediments and was probably sourced via runoff from farm lands. The reactive OM which released nutrients into the overlying waters was from diatoms, dinoflagellates and probably cyanobacteria. Microcystis filaments were observed in surface sediments. OM degradation rates varied between 5.3 and 47.1 mmol m?2 day?1 (64–565 mg m?2 day?1), were highest in the muddy sediments and sulphate reduction rates accounted for 20–40% of the OM degraded. Diatoms, being heavy sink rapidly, and are an important vector to transport catchment N and P to sites of denitrification and P-trapping in the sediments. Denitrification rates (mean ~4 mmol N m?2 day?1), up to 7 mmol N m?2 day?1 (105 mg N m?2 day?1) were measured, and denitrification efficiencies were highest (mean = 86 ± 4%) in the sandy sediments (~20% of the area of BB), but lower in the muddy sediments (mean = 63 ± 15%). These differences probably result from higher OM loads and anaerobic respiration in muddy sediments. Most DIP (>70%) from OM degradation was not released into overlying waters but remained trapped in surface sediments. Biophysical (advective) processes were responsible for the measured metabolite (O2, CO2, DSi, DIN and DIP) fluxes across the sediment–water interface.  相似文献

The soil of the former Lake Texcoco is a saline alkaline environment where anthropogenic drainage in some areas has reduced salt content and pH. Potential methane (CH4) consumption rates were measured in three soils of the former Lake Texcoco with different electrolytic conductivity (EC) and pH, i.e. Tex-S1 a >18 years drained soil (EC 0.7 dS m?1, pH 8.5), Tex-S2 drained for ~10 years (EC 9.0 dS m?1, pH 10.3) and the undrained Tex-S3 (EC 84.8 dS m?1, pH 10.3). An arable soil from Alcholoya (EC 0.7 dS m?1, pH 6.7), located nearby Lake Texcoco was used as control. Methane oxidation in the soil Tex-S1 (lowest EC and pH) was similar to that in the arable soil from Alcholoya (32.5 and 34.7 mg CH4 kg?1 dry soil day?1, respectively). Meanwhile, in soils Tex-S2 and Tex-S3, the potential CH4 oxidation rates were only 15.0 and 12.8 mg CH4 kg?1 dry soil day?1, respectively. Differences in CH4 oxidation were also related to changes in the methane-oxidizing communities in these soils. Sequence analysis of pmoA gene showed that soils differed in the identity and number of methanotrophic phylotypes. The Alcholoya soil and Tex-S1 contained phylotypes grouped within the upland soil cluster gamma and the Jasper Ridge, California JR-2 clade. In soil Tex-S3, a phylotype related to Methylomicrobium alcaliphilum was detected.  相似文献

The present study investigated growth and biodegradation of 4-bromophenol (4-BP) by Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6 in batch shake flasks as well as in a continuously operated packed bed reactor (PBR). Batch growth kinetics of A. chlorophenolicus A6 in presence of 4-BP followed substrate inhibition kinetics with the estimated biokinetic parameters value of μ max = 0.246 h?1, K i = 111 mg L?1, K s  = 30.77 mg L?1 and K = 100 mg L?1. In addition, variations in the observed and theoretical biomass yield coefficient and maintenance energy of the culture were investigated at different initial 4-BP concentration. Results indicates that the toxicity tolerance and the biomass yield of A. chlorophenolicus A6 towards 4-BP was found to be poor as the organism utilized the substrate mainly for its metabolic maintenance energy. Further, 4-BP biodegradation performance by the microorganism was evaluated in a continuously operated PBR by varying the influent concentration and hydraulic retention time in the ranges 400–1,200 mg L?1 and 24–7.5 h, respectively. Complete removal of 4-BP was achieved in the PBR up to a loading rate of 2,276 mg L?1 day?1.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of a mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand subjected to an average total atmospheric N deposition of 48 kg ha?1 year?1 was studied during the period 1992–2007. The annual amount of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in throughfall (TF) averaged 34 kg ha?1 year?1 over the 16-year monitoring period. The throughfall fluxes contained also considerable amounts of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) (5–8.5 kg N ha?1 year?1), which should be incorporated in the estimate of N flux using throughfall collectors. Throughfall DIN fluxes declined at a rate of ?0.9 kg N ha?1 year?1, mainly due to the decreasing TF fluxes of ammonium (NH4), which accounted for 70% to TF DIN. The decrease in TF DIN was accompanied by a decrease in DIN leaching in the seepage water (?1.6 kg N ha?1 year?1), which occurred exclusively as nitrate (NO3 ?). Nitrate losses in the leachate of the forest floor (LFH) equalled the TF NO3 ? delivered to the LFH-layer. On the contrary, about half of the TF NH4 + was retained within the LFH-layer. Approximately 60% of the TF DIN fluxes were leached indicating that N inputs were far in excess of the N requirements of the forest. For DON, losses were only substantial from the LFH-layer, but no DON was leached in the seepage water. Despite the high N losses through nitrate leaching and NO x emission, the forest was still accumulating N, especially in the aggrading LFH-layer. The forest stand, on the contrary, was found to be a poor N sink.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of plant growth regulator (PGR) (no PGR, trinexapac-ethyl, and paclobutrazol) and N fertilizer (zero N, an average of 37 kg N ha?1 month?1, 6 and 12 kg N ha?1 week?1) on soil organic C (SOC) and soil N in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) fairway turf. After 4 years of field experiments soil samples were obtained from soil depths of 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5, 7.5–10, 10–15, 15–20, and 20–30 cm. Soil bulk density, SOC, total N, NO 3 ? –N, and NH 4 + –N concentrations were determined. Paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl application increased SOC. The 37 kg N ha?1 month?1 application increased SOC at the 0–2.5 cm depth with both PGRs. When paclobutrazol was used, N fertilizer always increased SOC; however, the greatest increase was observed with the 12 kg N ha?1 week?1 application when compared to other rates, inversely related to the NH 4 + –N concentration. Nitrogen application increased soil total N and NO 3 ? –N in the upper three depths. The application of PGRs and N fertilizer to creeping bentgrass fairway turf is an effective strategy for promoting C sequestration.  相似文献

There has been considerable interest in cultivation of green microalgae (Chlorophyta) as a source of lipid that can alternatively be converted to biodiesel. However, almost all mass cultures of algae are carbon-limited. Therefore, to reach a high biomass and oil productivities, the ideal selected microalgae will most likely need a source of inorganic carbon. Here, growth and lipid productivities of Tetraselmis suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp were tested under various ranges of pH and different sources of inorganic carbon (untreated flue gas from coal-fired power plant, pure industrial CO2, pH-adjusted using HCl and sodium bicarbonate). Biomass and lipid productivities were highest at pH 7.5 (320?±?29.9 mg biomass L?1 day?1and 92?±?13.1 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and pH 7 (407?±?5.5 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 99?±?17.2 mg lipid L?1 day?1) for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. In general, biomass and lipid productivities were pH 7.5?>?pH 7?>?pH 8?>?pH 6.5 and pH 7?>?pH 7.5?=?pH 8?>?pH 6.5?>?pH 6?>?pH 5.5 for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. The effect of various inorganic carbon on growth and productivities of T. suecica (regulated at pH?=?7.5) and Chlorella sp (regulated at pH?=?7) grown in bag photobioreactors was also examined outdoor at the International Power Hazelwood, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The highest biomass and lipid productivities of T. suecica (51.45?±?2.67 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 14.8?±?2.46 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and Chlorella sp (60.00?±?2.4 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 13.70?±?1.35 mg lipid L?1 day?1) were achieved when grown using CO2 as inorganic carbon source. No significant differences were found between CO2 and flue gas biomass and lipid productivities. While grown using CO2 and flue gas, biomass productivities were 10, 13 and 18 %, and 7, 14 and 19 % higher than NaHCO3, HCl and unregulated pH for T. suecica and Chlorella sp, respectively. Addition of inorganic carbon increased specific growth rate and lipid content but reduced biomass yield and cell weight of T. suecica. Addition of inorganic carbon increased yield but did not change specific growth rate, cell weight or content of the cell weight of Chlorella sp. Both strains showed significantly higher maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) when grown under optimum pH.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to study the effects of photoperiod, salinity and pH on growth and lipid content of Pavlova lutheri microalgae for biodiesel production in small-scale and large-scale open-pond tanks. In a 250-mL flask, the cultures grew well under 24 h illumination with maximum specific growth rate, μ max , of 0.12 day?1 and lipid content of 35 % as compared to 0.1 day?1 and 15 % lipid content in the dark. The salinity was optimum for the cell growth at 30–35 ppt, but the lipid content of 34–36 % was higher at 35–40 ppt. Algal growth and lipid accumulation was optimum at pH 8–9. Large-scale cultivation in 5-L and 30-L tanks achieved μ max of 0.13–0.14 day?1 as compared to 0.12 day?1 in small-scale and 300L cultures.  相似文献

The biotreatment of flue gases with algae cultures is a promising option to sequestrate CO2, yet the emission of other greenhouse gases (GHG) from the cultures can hamper their environmental benefit. Quantitative data on the sequestration potential for CO2 and NO x in relation to the direct production of CH4 and N2O are urgently required. The present study assessed the flows of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) through cultures of the green alga Dunaliella salina, supplied with biodiesel flue gas, by means of mass balancing. D. salina was grown in artificially lighted, field- (42-L bubble column reactor) and laboratory-scale cultures (23 °C, pH 7.5). In the bubble column reactor, algae grew with an average specific growth rate of 0.237 day?1 under flue gas supplementation (6.3 % (v/v) CO2, 1.2 ppmv NO x ), and CO2 was retained to 39 % in the system. The specific sequestration rate for CO2 was low, with 0.13 g CO2 L?1 day?1. Cultures emitted up to 13.03 μg CH4 L?1 day?1 and 4261 μg N2O L?1 day?1. The moderate retention of NO x -N was outweighed by emissions of N2O-N, and total N in the system decreased by 15.48 % during the 9-day trial. Results suggest that GHG production was mainly the outcome of anaerobic microbial processes and their emission was lower in pre-sterilized cultures. Under the tested conditions, up to six times more CO2 equivalents were emitted during flue gas treatment. Therefore, the direct GHG emissions of algae culture systems, intended for flue gas treatment (i.e. open ponds) need to be reviewed critically.  相似文献

Energy consumption of municipal wastewater treatment plants can be reduced by the anaerobic pre-treatment of the main wastewater stream. After this pre-treatment, nitrogen can potentially be removed by partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A). Currently, the application of PN/A is limited to nitrogen-rich streams (>500 mg L?1) and temperatures 25–35 °C. But, anaerobically pretreated municipal wastewater is characterized by much lower nitrogen concentrations (20–100 mg L?1) and lower temperatures (10–25 °C). We operated PN/A under similar conditions: total ammonium nitrogen concentration 50 mg L?1 and lab temperature (22 °C). PN/A was operated for 342 days in a 4 L moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). At 0.4 mg O2 L?1, nitrogen removal rate 33 g N m?3 day?1 and 80 % total nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved. The capacity of the reactor was limited by low AOB activity. We observed significant anammox activity (40 g N m?3 day?1) even at 12 °C, improving the applicability of PN/A for municipal wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is a major constraint to the productivity of the African smallholder farming systems. Grain, green manure and forage legumes have the potential to improve the soil N fertility of smallholder farming systems through biological N2-fixation. The N2-fixation of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), soyabean (Glycine max), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), lablab (Lablab purpureus), velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens), crotalaria (Crotalaria ochroleuca), jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis), desmodium (Desmodium uncinatum), stylo (Stylosanthes guianensis) and siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) was assessed using the 15N natural abundance method. The experiments were conducted at three sites in western Kenya, selected on an agro-ecological zone (AEZ) gradient defined by rainfall. On a relative scale, Museno represents high potential AEZ 1, Majengo medium potential AEZ 2 and Ndori low potential AEZ 3. Rainfall in the year of experimentation was highest in AEZ 2, followed by AEZ 1 and AEZ 3. Experimental fields were classified into high, medium and low fertility classes, to assess the influence of soil fertility on N2-fixation performance. The legumes were planted with triple super phosphate (TSP) at 30 kg P ha?1, with an extra soyabean plot planted without TSP (soyabean-P), to assess response to P, and no artificial inoculation was done. Legume grain yield, shoot N accumulation, %N derived from N2-fixation, N2-fixation and net N inputs differed significantly (P<0.01) with rainfall and soil fertility. Mean grain yield ranged from 0.86 Mg ha?1, in AEZ 2, to 0.30 Mg ha?1, in AEZ 3, and from 0.78 Mg ha?1, in the high fertility field, to 0.48 Mg ha?1, in the low fertility field. Shoot N accumulation ranged from a maximum of 486 kg N ha?1 in AEZ 2, to a minimum of 10 kg N ha?1 in AEZ 3. Based on shoot biomass estimates, the species fixed 25–90% of their N requirements in AEZ 2, 23–90% in AEZ 1, and 7–77% in AEZ 3. Mean N2-fixation by green manure legumes ranged from 319 kg ha?1 (velvet bean) in AEZ 2 to 29 kg ha?1 (jackbean) in AEZ 3. For the forage legumes, mean N2-fixation ranged from 97 kg N ha?1 for desmodium in AEZ 2 to 39 kg N ha?1 for siratro in AEZ 3, while for the grain legumes, the range was from 172 kg N ha?1 for lablab in AEZ 1 to 3 kg N ha?1 for soyabean-P in AEZ 3. Lablab and groundnut showed consistently greater N2-fixation and net N inputs across agro-ecological and soil fertility gradients. The use of maize as reference crop resulted in lower N2-fixation values than when broad-leaved weed plants were used. The results demonstrate differential contributions of the green manure, forage and grain legume species to soil fertility improvement in different biophysical niches in smallholder farming systems and suggest that appropriate selection is needed to match species with the niches and farmers’ needs.  相似文献

Background and aims

Symbiotic N2 fixation is essential in the development of sustainable agriculture, but the nodulation of legumes is usually inhibited by N fertilization. Here, the intercropping of maize and pea in strips under various N managements was used as a means to alleviate the inhibitory effect of mineral N on pea nodulation and N2 fixation and to improve system performance.

Methods

N natural abundance (δ 15N) analysis was employed to quantify N2 fixation in the 3 years (2012 to 2014) of field experiment in Hexi Corridor of Northwestern China. Four N management systems with N rate of 0 kg N ha?1 (the control), 90?+?45 kg N ha?1 (base N plus topdressing N), 90?+?90 kg N ha?1, and 90?+?135 kg N ha?1 were implemented in the maize/pea strip intercropping to form different ratios of base N to topdressing N.

Results

Intercropped pea improved nodule biomass per plant by 99 %, increased nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) by 35 %, and promoted aboveground plant tissue N accumulation by 35 % as compared with sole pea, averaged across the four N treatments. Compared to the highest N fertilizer treatment, a reduction of topdressing to 45 kg N ha?1 increased the nodule biomass of intercropped pea by 116 %, Ndfa by 35 %, and grain yield by 6 %.

Conclusions

Adaptation of suitable N management in cereal/legume intercropping systems will allow an effective conversion of atmospheric N2 into crop available N and thus maximizing the system productivity.

Background and Aims

Understanding the impact of soil rhizobial populations and inoculant rhizobia in supplying sufficient nodulation is crucial to optimising N2 fixation by legume crops. This study explored the impact of different rates of inoculant rhizobia and contrasting soil rhizobia on nodulation and N2 fixation in faba bean (Vicia faba L.).

Faba beans were inoculated with one of seven rates of rhizobial inoculation, from no inoculant to 100 times the normal rate of inoculation, sown at two field sites, with or without soil rhizobia present, and their nodulation and N2 fixation assessed.

Results

At the site without soil rhizobia, inoculation increased nodule number and increased N2 fixation from 21 to 129 kg shoot N ha?1, while N2 fixation increased from 132 to 218 kg shoot N ha?1 at the site with high background soil rhizobia. At the site without soil rhizobia, inoculation increased concentrations of shoot N from 14 to 24 mg g?1, grain N from 32 to 45 mg g?1, and grain yields by 1.0 Mg (metric tonne) ha?1. Differences in nodulation influenced the contributions of fixed N to the system, which varied from the net removal of 20 kg N ha?1 from the system in the absence of rhizobia, to a net maximum input of 199 kg N ha?1 from legume shoot and root residues, after accounting for removal of N in grain harvest.

Conclusions

The impact of inoculation and soil rhizobia strongly influenced grain yield, grain N concentration and the potential contributions of legume cropping to soil N fertility. In soil with resident rhizobia, N2 fixation was improved only with the highest inoculation rate.  相似文献

The high cost of aeration needed to tumble culture macroalgae is a limiting factor for integration with land-based finfish culture. Toward reducing this electricity cost, we compared intermittent aeration (16 h on:8 h off) with continuous aeration (24 h on) on the productivity of two strains of Chondrus crispus (Basin Head and Charlesville) and Palmaria palmata from Atlantic Canada between May and June 2011. Algal fronds were cultured under a 16:8-h light/dark photoperiod in 50-L tanks supplied with finfish effluent (49 μmol L?1 of ammonium and 11 μmol L?1 of phosphate) at a mean water flow rate of 0.4 L min?1. Nitrogen (N) influx was 1.8 gN m?2 day?1, and phosphorus (P) influx was 0.9 gP m?2 day?1, with uptake rates ranging from 0.02 to 2.4 gN m?2 day?1 and ?0.2 to 0.4 gP m?2 day?1. On average, the macroalgae culture system (algae and biofilms) removed 1.0 gN m?2 day?1 (51.9 %). The growth of macroalgae (pooled across treatment and strain) ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 % day?1, which accounted for a yield of 2.2 to 5.4 g DW m?2 day?1. Switching off aeration at night improved the growth rate of Basin Head Chondrus by 146 % and had no effect on growth rate or nitrogen and carbon removal by P. palmata and Charlesville Chondrus. Growth and yield of Basin Head Chondrus under intermittent aeration were over two times greater than both Charlesville Chondrus treatments.  相似文献

In many forests of Europe and north-eastern North America elevated N deposition has opened the forest N cycle, resulting in NO3 ? leaching. On the other hand, despite this elevated N deposition, the dominant fate of NO3 ? and NH4 + in some of these forests is biotic or abiotic immobilization in the soil organic matter pool, preventing N losses. The environmental properties controlling mineral N immobilization and the variation and extent of mineral N immobilization in forest soils are not yet fully understood. In this study we investigated a temperate mixed deciduous forest, which is subjected to an average N deposition of 36.5 kg N ha?1 yr?1, but at the same time shows low NO3 ? concentrations in the groundwater. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the turnover rate of the mineral N pool could explain these low N leaching losses. A laboratory 15N pool dilution experiment was conducted to study gross and net N mineralization and nitrification and mineral N immobilization in the organic and uppermost (0–10 cm) mineral layer of the forest soil. Two locations, one at the forest edge (GE) and another one 145 m inside the forest (GF1), were selected. In the organic layers of GE and GF1, the gross N mineralization averaged 10.9 and 11.1 mg N kg?1 d?1, the net N mineralization averaged 6.1 and 6.8 mg N kg?1 d?1 and NH4 + immobilization rates averaged 3.8 and 3.6 mg N kg?1 d?1. In the organic layer of GE and GF1, the average gross nitrification was 3.8 and 4.6 mg N kg?1 d?1, the average net nitrification was ?25.2 and ?31.3 mg N kg?1 d?1 and the NO3 ? immobilization rates averaged 29.0 and 35.9 mg N kg?1 d?1. For the mineral (0–10 cm) layer the same trend could be observed, but the N transformation rates were much lower for the NH4 + pool and not significantly different from zero for the NO3 ? pool. Except for the turnover of the NH4 + pool in the mineral layer, no significant differences were observed between location GE and GF1. The ratio of NH4 + immobilization to gross N mineralization, gross N mineralization to gross nitrification, and NO3 ? immobilisation to gross nitrification led to the following observations. The NH4 + pool of the forest soil was controlled by N mineralization and NO3 ? immobilization was importantly controlling the forest NO3 ? pool. Therefore it was concluded that this process is most probably responsible for the limited NO3 ? leaching from the forest ecosystem, despite the chronically high N deposition rates.  相似文献
