The existing literature reports that only one species of Indo-Pacific echinoid (Echinometra oblonga), occurs in the eastern Pacific. In this study we confirm the presence of this species at Islas Revillagigedo and also report the presence of two species ofEchinothrix (a genus hitherto unknown outside the Indo-Pacific) at Isla del Coco and at Clipperton Island. We also present evidence from isozymes and from mitochondrial DNA sequences indicating that at least one individual ofDiadema at Clipperton may belong to a maternal lineage characteristic of the west Pacific speciesD. savignyi. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that the observed populations of Indo-Pacific echinoid species are recent arrivals to the eastern Pacific, as opposed to the view that they are relicts of Tethyan pan-tropical distributions.Echinothrix diadema, in particular, may have arrived at Isla del Coco during the 1982-1983 El Nifio. In addition to Indo-Pacific species, Clipperton, Isla del Coco and the Revillagigedos contain a complement of eastern Pacific echinoids. The echinoid faunas of these islands should, therefore, be regarded as mixtures of two biogeographic provinces. Though none of the Indo-Pacific species are known to have reached the coast of the American mainland, their presence at the offshore islands of the eastern Pacific suggests that, for some echinoids, the East Pacific Barrier is not as formidable an obstacle to migration as was previously thought.  相似文献

The pathology o f a parasitic disease is a major link between the investigating parasitologist and those concerned with its epidemiology, socioeconomic impact, clinical treatment and control. The epidemiologist requires information about the incidence and prevalence of major pathological lesions attributable to on infection, which in turn will determine the social and economic impact of the disease and thus its priority for control. For both diagnosis and treatment, the clinician requires an understanding of the pathological mechanisms, and the potential for new drugs or vaccine development largely depends on such understanding. Recent years have seen remarkable improvements in determining the nature of pathology associated with parasitic infections. and in understanding their causative mechanisms. With this issue, Parasitology Today begins a series of special reviews designed to bring together these insights into parasite pathology (see pages 271-282). In this introductory overview. 以泰国玉米品种与适应种质共122份为素材,采用改良穗行、顶交或测交方案,按精准的育种目标与定向设计,创制出具有鲜明独特特征的开放授粉品种(Open pollinate varieties,OPVs)。育种素材选择考虑表现优良、广适性、遗传多样性等3个因素;合成系统考虑实现遗传混合与重组、均等比较遗传贡献、施之温和选择压力、充分交配达到遗传平衡(遗传组成母本性状相近)等4条要素。相继创制Suwan 1复合种及其(半)硬粒型衍生种(Suwan 2、3复合种,Suwan 5、KS24综合种),含有不同血缘的马齿型KS6、KS28,Non-Suwan 1血缘的马齿型Caripeno DMR、KS27、KS23等。对10个OPVs采用S1选择法分别实施了C2~C13轮选择,从中育成近50个自交系,组配并发放16个优良单(三)交种。目前泰国各单位育成的每个杂交种中,至少有一个亲本系来源于Suwan(KS)种质。文章还依据合成OPVs及选系理论,对合成OPVs遗传成分适度多样化、亲缘关系、优势群与模式和合成OPVs对杂交优势育种的启示问题加以探讨。  相似文献

Seasonal modulation of the adrenocortical response appears to be ubiquitous in mid- to high-latitude vertebrates but has not been investigated in tropical vertebrates. Previous studies demonstrate that temperate passerines show seasonality in corticosterone secretion and corticosteroid binding globulin capacities. We examined seasonal and sex differences in the stress response in an equatorial population of Zonotrichia capensis, the only Zonotrichia that breeds in the tropics, and compared the results with those of northern Zonotrichia. Seasonal differences in tropical Zonotrichia would presumably be independent of photoperiod and thus directly related to such activities as reproduction and feather molt. In addition, we investigated the possible role of binding globulin as a sex steroid binding globulin, as suggested for temperate passerines. Similar to northern congeners, Z. capensis show seasonal modulation in total corticosterone and binding globulin capacity with higher levels during breeding than molt. However, unlike many temperate passerines, there are no sex differences in corticosterone secretion or binding globulin capacity. Furthermore, the seasonal differences in total corticosterone diminish when the free levels are calculated. The contrast between equatorial and northern congeners indicates factors such as breeding environment and life-history strategy may play important roles in shaping stress response in these species.  相似文献

This research represents the first part of a study which aimed to characterize the role of mycorrhizal associations in undisturbed and disturbed habitats in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia. This is a seasonally dry tropical region with a climate consisting of a long dry season and a monsoonal wet season. Intact soil cores were sampled from 22 sites in this region, representing eucalypt savanna woodland, wetland, rocky hill and rainforest habitats. Clover, sorghum and eucalypt seedlings were grown in these cores in bioassays to measure the inoculum potential of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi. Propagules of VAM fungi were concentrated in the surface horizon, and were not adversely affected by 6 months dry storage of soil. Bioassays detected VAM fungus propagules at all sites, but these were less numerous in three sites with sparse herbaceous vegetation (a shrub-dominated woodland site, a sandstone area and a disturbed gravel pit without topsoil), than in other woodland sites. Propagules of VAM fungi were particularly numerous in soil from a rainforest habitat, which had much denser plant cover than any of the savanna sites. Propagules of ECM fungi colonized eucalypt seedling roots in some cores from all sites, except two wetland areas and a disturbed area without eucalypt trees. Physical and chemical properties of soils varied between sites and some properties (texture, organic carbon, etc.) were correlated with the inoculum potential of VAM fungi.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Historical records of burning, field observations, and a manipulation experiment were used to evaluate the extent and impact of fire in a system of gallery forests in the Mountain Pine Ridge savanna, Belize. The outer boundaries of gallery forests are fire-prone zones, but fires rarely intrude into these forests. This is attributed to the existence of fire-tolerant trees in the outer zone, which preserve a forest interior of low flammability. Occasional fire incursions are patchily distributed and partially inhibited by slope convexities. Intrusions consume litter and root mats and destroy seedlings and saplings, but create a wide variety of subsequent light regimes depending upon the degree of canopy destruction. At most sites, partial canopy cover persists and seedlings of a subset of forest tree species establish preferentially. Early survivorship of these seedlings is comparable to those established in undamaged forest. Where canopy opening is severe, a secondary succession is initiated, with large numbers of herbaceous plants deriving from the seed bank. Gallery forests contain core zones into which fire very rarely intrudes, and peripheral zones that experience fire incursions that are patchily distributed in space and time. In the latter zones fire incursions play a role comparable to that of canopy gaps in continuous forests, but also create a unique class of micro-habitats to which a subset of tree species is specialized. The fire regime over the recent past in this gallery forest system appears to have had an enriching, rather than a depauperizing, effect on the forest communities, and such systems represent plausible refugia for forest species in fire-prone landscapes.  相似文献

Hatching plasticity has been documented in diverse terrestrial and freshwater taxa, but in few marine invertebrates. Anecdotal observations over the last 80 years have suggested that intertidal neritid snails may produce encapsulated embryos able to significantly delay hatching. The cause for delays and the cues that trigger hatching are unknown, but temperature, salinity, and wave action have been suggested to play a role. We followed individual egg capsules of Nerita scabricosta in 16 tide pools to document the variation in natural time to hatching and to determine if large delays in hatching occur in the field. Hatching occurred after about 30 d and varied significantly among tide pools in the field. Average time to hatching in each pool was not correlated with presence of potential predators, temperature, salinity, or pool size. We also compared hatching time between egg capsules in the field to those kept in the laboratory at a constant temperature in motionless water, and to those kept in the laboratory with sudden daily water motion and temperature changes. There was no significant difference in the hatching rate between the two laboratory treatments, but capsules took, on average, twice as long to hatch in the laboratory as in the field. Observations of developing embryos showed that embryos in the field develop slowly and continuously until hatching, but embryos in the laboratory reach the hatching stage during the first month of development and remain in stasis after that. Instances of hatching plasticity in benthic marine invertebrates, like the one in N. scabricosta, could greatly enhance our ability to investigate the costs and benefits of benthic versus planktonic development, a long‐standing area of interest for invertebrate larval biologists.  相似文献

Abstract. Polyps of the tropical corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma segregate sexes between center and edge positions within aggregations produced by clonal replication. On a reef flat at Eilat, northern Red Sea, infertile polyps and males occur mainly along the edges of clonal aggregations, while females mostly occupy central positions within each aggregation. In addition, on the inner to middle reef flat where polyps of this species are abundant, aggregations consist mostly of females. On the outer reef flat, where polyps are rare, a sampled aggregation consisted mostly of males and infertile polyps. Male polyps are significantly smaller than females, and the smallest polyps are infertile. Fecundity increases significantly with polyp size in females, but testis size and number do not vary with body size in males. Oocytes are present in polyps during most of the year and gradually increase in size until annual spawning in June-July during the period of maximum day length. Testes do not vary significantly in size during the year and remain a small proportion of body mass (>8%). In contrast, females invest up to 30% of their body mass into gonads during the months immediately before spawning. The annual spawning of gametes coincides with a temporary drop in the frequency of clonal replication by polyps. We estimate that each female polyp of R. rhodostoma may release up to 3000 large eggs (500 μm in maximum diameter) each summer. The high investment of this corallimorpharian in sexual production of planktonic propagules may allow rapid dispersal to reef habitats distant from parent populations.  相似文献

Summary About one-and-a-half acres of tropical forest, of known mass and chemical composition, was cleared and burned. Soil changes during clearing and two years' cropping were studied.Following burning, approximately all the K, Ca, and Mg in the vegetation were accounted for by the rise in exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg in the soil. There was a marked rise in soil pH. A small but significant increase in C and N was attributed to admixture of parts of the vegetation with the soil.Following cultivation, there was a rapid loss of nutrients by leaching and erosion during the first year and a substantial loss of K and Mg, but smaller loss of Ca in the second year. Losses of calcium were less and of potassium more under the local practice of shifting cultivation than under cultivation treatments involving clearing of roots followed by bare fallow or a maize-cassava rotation. Depths of cultivation had little effect on nutrient losses. Losses of organic matter in the first year were rapid due to oxidation of unhumified material. They were much reduced in the second year. Greater production of food was obtained from the maize-cassava rotation than by local practice.  相似文献
