[14C]-assimilation rates were measured on cultures of two unicellulargreen algae (Chlamydomonas sp. and Oocystis sp.) as a functionof light intensities (saturation curves), under steady lightand also under rapidly alternating high and low light intensities.Assimilation rates vary according to the frequency of the intermittentlight regime and it falls under two categories: (1) at 0.1 and0.2 Hz, the assimilation rate is equal to the average of therates observed at high and low light intensities under steadylight, and (2) under 1.0, 1.6 and 10 Hz the assimilation rateis equal to the rate observed under a mean steady irradiance.Moreover, the range of assimilation rates at a given frequencydepends on the difference between the high and the low intensities.Batch cultures of Oocystis sp. have been grown under intermittentlight of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 Hz (same mean intensity). Growthrate under intermittent light of 0.1 Hz is –40% lowerthan the control under steady light. Photosynthetic potential(PBmax)and efficiency () change with the growth stages of thecultures. At the end of the logarithmic growth phase, both photosyntheticparameters are maximum at 1.0 Hz and minimum at 0.1 Hz. Averagecell concentrations of chlorophyll a increase as the frequencyof the light regime decreases. During the log phase, concentrationof carotenoids relative to chlorophyll a increases at 1.0 Hz,decreases at 0.1 Hz, and remains constant at 10.0 Hz. A large (1200 1) seawater sample from the Gulf of Maine waskept under constant temperature and light conditions for a periodof 72 h. The loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a grassland bird species whose preferred nesting habitat in eastern Canada is pastureland. This species has been extirpated from much of its historical range in this region, and breeding habitat loss is suspected to be an important cause of this decline. We evaluated the availability of suitable breeding habitats in Québec using satellite imagery. Because this species no longer breeds in Québec, we established habitat selection criteria from known nesting sites in the adjacent province of Ontario, from analysis of a Landsat-TM satellite image, and applied these criteria to Landsat-TM images covering southern Québec. We developed regional landscape criteria in 100 km2 plots and patch indices criteria at the pasture level. Spatial analyses were conducted to characterize plots and pastures on the basis of pasture availability and spatial distribution. Pastures suitable for nesting loggerhead shrikes were those fulfilling patch criteria at the pasture level and located in plots fulfilling regional landscape criteria. Overall, 310 out of 1700 plots located in the historical breeding range of the loggerhead shrike in Québec fulfilled landscape criteria, supporting 3988 pastures that fulfilled patch criteria. More than 500 of these pastures were visited to validate their current status. The Outaouais region would be the most suitable region for nesting loggerhead shrikes in southern Québec, where suitable breeding habitat still remains because more than two-thirds of visited sites were still pastureland, hawthorns were well-distributed in the region, and pastureland fragmentation was lowest. We conclude that the availability of breeding habitat does not limit the establishment of a breeding population of loggerhead shrike in southern Québec, as we estimated that thousands of hectares of suitable habitat still remain in that province.  相似文献

The levels of DNA adducts in the hepatic tissue of the white sucker fish speciesCatostomus commersoni were determined by32P-postlabelling. The fish were caught at four sites: two sites near the city of Windsor (Québec, Canada) on the St. François River, a downstream tributary of the St. Lawrence River, and two sites in the St. Lawrence River itself, near the city of Montréal (Québec, Canada). The latter sites are known to be contaminated by many pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Total adduct levels in all fish ranged from 25.1–178.0 adducts per 109 nucleotides. White sucker from the selected sites of the St. Lawrence River had a significantly higher mean level of DNA adducts than those of the St. François River (129.4 vs 56.8, respectively). These results suggest that the effluents of many heavy industries (e.g. from a Soderberg aluminium plant) flowing in the St. Lawrence River are more likely to produce genotoxic damage to fish than those released in one of its tributary, and mainly associated to the activities of a small town and a nearby pulp and paper mill.  相似文献

We aimed to determine whether the copepod assemblages in lakes and ponds of northern Québec, Canada, were closer in composition to those found in southern Québec, or to those reported from the subarctic and arctic. Six calanoid and five cyclopoid species were identified from 37 ponds and lakes located in the region between 55° N and 59° N. Species diversity was generally low, ranging from 0 to 4 species per lake. Dominant species were Leptodiaptomus minutus and Acanthocyclops vernalis. The species assemblages showed high affinity with those found in forested regions of southern Québec. Exceptions were Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli, previously only recorded west of Hudson Bay, and Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, hitherto recorded north of 58° N. Relationships between the lakes, species, and environmental variables were explored using multivariate analysis. Lakes situated along the coast and on two offshore islands clustered together and were characterised by higher conductivity and pH than those lakes located further inland. Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli was common in these coastal lakes. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between copepod distributions and conductivity, dissolved organic carbon and pH. These three variables accounted for 70% of the variation in the species' distribution.  相似文献

Phytoplankton photosynthetic responses were studied in two basinsof an oligotrophic lake (Québec, Canada). which are characterizedby the absence (shallow Basin 1) and presence (deeper Basin2) of seasonal thermal stratification. Size-fractionated photosynthesiswas used to characterize changes in phytoplankton characteristicsduring periods of seasonal mixing and stratification. Results are presented which prioritize areas for potential protection in Québec on the basis of biodiversity considerations. These results are relevant to the ongoing public discussion in Québec about designating new parks and refuges so that the province may fulfil its obligations to Canada's Endangered Spaces Campaign. The prioritization algorithm used in this analysis is based on rarity and complementarity. It attempts to sample biodiversity in as area-efficient a way as possible. The biodiversity surrogates used here comprise a subset of 743 species for which data on spatial distributions are publicly available; the analysis begins with 394 species at risk. It is shown that: (i) the existing network of protected areas in Québec does a poor job of protecting these biodiversity surrogates; (ii) adding adjacent areas to this network will not be the optimal way of protecting these biodiversity surrogates; (iii) many of the areas that have highest priority are in southern Québec, which has a high human population density; (iv) because of (iii), designating parks may not be economically or sociologically feasible and more adaptive alternative conservation plans will have to be devised; (v) coastal areas, riparian habitats, and other wetlands should have high priority for protection but are currently very inadequately represented in the reserve network; (vi) there is some reason for concern about the clear-cut logging of boreal forests in northern Québec; and (vii) the islands, Île d'Anticosti and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, emerge as being of very significant conservation value and plans for the protection of areas on them should be an immediate goal for biodiversity conservation in Québec.  相似文献

We describe zooplankton community structure and copepod eggproduction in the vicinity of the coastal boundary zone of theGreat Barrier Reef lagoon, Australia. The abundance and eggproduction rate of constituents of the zooplankton assemblagecharacteristic of the coastal zone rapidly increase subsequentto events such as flooding and upwelling. Our sampling spannedtwo summer monsoonal seasons, the first of which (1990-91) wasvery wet. The second monsoonal season (1991-92) was very dryand was characterized by intrusive upwelling events from theCoral Sea. Chlorophyll a concentrations did not rise in thewet year, probably because of light limitation, but did riseas a result of upwelling. Terrestrial run-off in the wet yearhad a greater apparent effect on zooplankton abundance patternsthan did upwelling in the dry year, except where coastal trappingallowed sufficient time for increases in zooplankton abundanceto occur. Egg production rates by the copepods Acrocalanus gibberand Acrocalanus gracilis showed haphazard spatial differences.Nitrogen-specific egg production ranged between 0.03 and 0.21day–1 for A.gibber, and between 0.13 and 0.41 day–1for A.gracilis. At the ecosystem scale, the water and gasexchange processes are strongly coupled.Drainage and removal of a peatland'ssurface vegetation cover for peatharvesting alters its hydrology, and as adirect consequence the carbon budget.Previous studies have measuredpeatland-atmosphere carbon exchange usingthe chamber methodology. These studies haveindicated that the spatial and temporalvariability is large, suggesting the needfor continuous ecosystem-scalemeasurements. This paper presents ecosystemscale measurements of the atmosphericexchange of water and carbon dioxide(CO2) from a restored vacuum-harvestedpeatland in eastern Québec, Canada,using the eddy correlation measurementapproach.Results indicate that the adoptedrestoration practices reduce the loss ofwater from the peat. Evapotranspirationfrom the restored site was 20 and 25% lessthan that from an adjacent abandonedcomparison site in 2000 and 2001respectively. However, CO2 emissionsremain large during non-snow periods (478and 468 g C m-2 in 2000 and 2001,respectively). The blockage of drainageditches and the existence of a mulch coverat the site keep the moisture and thermalconditions more or less constant.Consequently, the CO2 flux, which ispredominantly soil respiration, is stronglycontrolled by peat temperaturefluctuations.  相似文献

Summary Mutations in the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene, leading to partial or total inactivation of the enzyme, result in a hereditary clinical syndrome called familial LPL deficiency. The French Canadian population, which is primarily and historically located in the province of Québec, has the highest worldwide frequency of LPL-deficient patients. We have analyzed the prevalence, spatial distribution, and genealogy in the Québec population of a LPL gene mutation, M-207 (P207L in conventional notation), which changes the amino acid proline to leucine in position 207 of the LPL protein and inactivates the enzyme. Our results show that M-207 is the most prevalent LPL gene mutation among French Canadians and accounts for the largest proportion of LPL-deficient patients in this population. Genealogical reconstruction of French Canadian LPL-deficient patients point to 16 founders of M-207, all of whom migrated to Québec in the early seventeenth century from the north-western part of France, especially from the region of Perche. Most of the carriers of M-207 are, at present, found in the Charlevoix, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean regions of eastern Québec. On the basis of the number of homozygote M-207 LPL-deficient patients so far identified, we estimate that there are at least 31,000 carriers of this mutation in the province of Québec. This constitutes a large pool of individuals at risk for atherosclerosis and other lipid-related diseases, since LPL deficiency is considered to be a significant contributing factor in the etiology and development of these diseases.  相似文献

Summary Phosphoglucomutase1 (PGM1) polymorphism was studied in a French-Canadian population of Québec city, Canada by means of a low voltage (max 500 V) isoelectric focusing (IEF) procedure on vertical polyacrylamide gel slabs. Frequencies of the four common PGM1 genes estimated from the phenotype distribution in 308 unrelated individuals were PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.13 (±0.01); PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.18 (±0.02); and PGM 1 1+ , 0.61 (±0.02); PGM 1 1- , 0.08 (±0.01). The segregation patterns observed in 154 families, which included 31 different mating types and 353 children, confirmed a Mendelian inheritance of four autosomal genes. The distribution of the PGM1 phenotypes observed or expected in a Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was compared with that of other populations. A significant (P<0.001) difference was found between the Québec population and a Black population from Keneba, Gambia, West-Africa.  相似文献

Summary Two populations of Echinochloa crus-galli (Québec, Mississippi) were grown at the Duke University Phytotron under 2 thermoperiods (28°/22°C, 21°/15°C day/night) and 2 CO2 regimes (350 and 675 l l-1). Thermostability, energy of activation (E a ),K m (PEP), K m (Mg++), and specific activity of phospho-enol-pyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) were analyzed in partially purified enzyme preparations of plants grown for 5 weeks. Thermostability of PEPc from extracts (in vitro) and leaves (in situ) was significantly higher in Mississippi plants. In vitro denaturation was not appreciably modified by thermal acclimation but CO2 enrichment elicited higher thermostability of PEPc. In situ thermostability was significantly higher than that of in vitro assays and was higher in Mississippi plants acclimated at 28°/22°C and in plants of the two ecotypes grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. E a (Q 10 30°/20°C) for PEPc was significantly lower in Québec plants as compared to Mississippi and no acclimatory shifts were observed. Significantly higher K m's (PEP) in 20°C assays were obtained for Mississippi as compared to Québec plants but values were similar at 30°C and 40°C assays. K m (Mg++) decreased at higher assay temperatures and were significantly lower for PEPc of the Québec ecotype. No significant changes in K m (Mg++) values were associated with modifications in temperature on CO2 regimes. PEPc activity measured at 30°C was significantly higher for Québec plants when measured on a leaf fresh weight, leaf area or protein basis but not on a chlorophyll basis. Significantly higher PEPc activity for both genotypes was observed for plants acclimated at 21°/15°C or grown at 675 l l-1 CO2. Net photosynthesis (Ps) and net assimilation rates (NAR) were higher in Québec plants and were enhanced by CO2 enrichment. NAR was higher in plants acclimated at low temperature, while an opposite trend was observed for Ps. PEPc activities were always in excess of the amounts required to support observed rates of CO2 assimilation.  相似文献

We exposed natural zooplankton communities to in situ levelsof sunlight for 3 days at different depths in two north temperatelakes: one oligotrophic and one eutrophic. Natural fluxes ofUV-B radiation (280–320 nm) were manipulated with cutofffilters (Mylar®). There was substantial mortality in someof the zooplankton exposed to UV-B in the oligotrophic lake,but not in the eutrophic lake. Reproduction of Diaptomus wassuppressed by UV-B down to 6 m in the oligotrophic lake. Thesedata suggest that natural levels of UV-B radiation in the oligotrophiclake may prevent some species of zooplankton from continuouslyexploiting the warm surface waters during summer stratification.In the more eutrophic lake, UV-B is a less important constraintin the vertical distribution of zooplankton. A series of 4-day manipulations of zooplankton biomass and nutrientavailability was performed in enclosures in three lakes to determinespecies-specific algal responses to herbivory and nutrient enrichment.Algal performance in enclosures was compared to the relationshipsbetween weekly algal growth rates and the zooplankton in situ.When in situ growth rates were significant functions of zooplanktonbiomass, the responses were generally consistent with responsesin the enclosure experiments. The importance of both nutrientsand zooplankton in mediating algal growth was demonstrated bynumerous observations: strong algal community response to enrichment,unimodal or positive responses of certain algal taxa to zooplanktonbiomass, differences in degree of nutrient limitation amongthe algal response types, lack of nutrient limitation of non-grazedalgal taxa and a preponderance of taxa with no net responseto increasing zooplankton biomass. Variation in the zooplanktoncommunity may be the largest source of variability in nutrientsupply rate during summer in stratified lakes, and causes substationalvariability in the algae. The spatial variation in zooplankton biomass, abundance andspecies composition in relation to hydrography and chlorophylla (Chl a) was studied in the subarctic waters of Hudson Bayand Hudson Strait. Sampling was carried out in early September1993 at 21 stations arranged along a transect following theQuébec coast from James Bay, in Hudson Bay, to the vicinityof Ungava Bay in Hudson Strait. Both the biomass and the abundanceof total zooplankton were low along the lower part of HudsonBay (averaging 1.6 g DM m–2 and 9432 ind. m–2) andincreased sharply toward the upper end of the Bay and in HudsonStrait (averaging 6.0 g DM m–2 and 40 583 ind. m–2).A total of 80 zooplankton taxa was identified in the samples.Copepods were clearly numerically dominant at all sampling stations,accounting for more than 85% and 93% of the zooplankton communityin the Bay and the Strait, respectively. Clustering samplesby their relative species composition revealed four groups distributedalong well defined environmental gradients characterizing thedistribution of physical variables and Chl a. The first group,located in the most southern region of Hudson Bay and fartheroffshore, northwest of the Belcher and Sleeper Islands, wasstrongly influenced by freshwater run-off from James Bay andother major rivers around the Bay, and was characterized bythe presence of two euryhaline copepod species (Acartia longiremisand Centropages hamatus). The second and the third groups occupiedthe largest region along the sampling transect, from the middleof Hudson Bay to the western region of Hudson Strait, and werecharacterized by a typical arctic zooplankton fauna relatedto the cyclonic circulation in central Hudson Bay. The fourthgroup was located in the easternmost part of the sampling transectin Hudson Strait where the highest phytoplankton biomass valueswere observed (Chl a ~220 mg m–2). The zooplankton assemblagethere showed an important increase in the abundance of the largeherbivorous copepod Calanus glacialis/finmarchicus, which werenumerically four times more abundant in the central Strait region(averaging 15 251 ind. m–2) than in the western side ofHudson Strait and in Hudson Bay (3629 ind. m–2). Theseresults support the hypothesis that the structure in the localbiological community is influenced by the local hydrodynamicfeatures which, through their action on surface water temperature,salinity, stratification and mixing conditions, lead to spatialdifferentiation of the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities.  相似文献

The longitudinal and seasonal patterns of plankton developmentwere examined over 2 years in a lowland, temperate river: theRideau River (Ontario, Canada). Following an initial decreasein phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass as water flowed fromthe headwaters into the Rideau River proper, there was an increasein chlorophyll a (chl a) and zooplankton biomass with downstreamtravel. At approximately river km 60, both phytoplankton andzooplankton reached their maximum biomass of 27 µg l–1(chl a) and 470 µg l–1 (dry mass), respectively.Downstream of river km 60, the biomass of both planktonic communitiesdeclined significantly despite increasing nutrient concentrationsand favorable light conditions. These downstream declines maybe due to the feeding activity of the exotic zebra mussel (Dreissenapolymorpha) which was at high density in downstream reaches(>1000 individuals m–2). There was no evidence forlongitudinal phasing of phytoplankton and zooplankton, as increasesand decreases in chl a and zooplankton biomass appeared to coincide.Overall, chl a was best predicted by total phosphorus (R2=0.43),whereas zooplankton biomass was best predicted by chl a (R2=0.20).There was no evidence for significant grazing effects of zooplanktonon phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Summary Lamellar bodies are described in the non-ciliated epithelial bronchiolar cells of the normal mouse lung. They are constituted of smooth concentric membranes, with a cytoplasmic center. They are related to mitochondria. They seem to belong to smooth endoplasmic reticulum. An origin from Golgi elements is discussed. Acknowledgment. Field and laboratory study of zooplankton has been hamperedby the lack of standardized and reliable culture methods. From 1988 to 1990, fish larvae were sampled before, during, and after ice breakup within and outside the plume of the Great Whale River off Kuujjuarapik, southeastern Hudson Bay, Canada. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) and sand lance (Ammodytes spp.) were the most abundant larvae. Half of the larval fish taxa emerged before the ice broke up in the Bay. The highest densities of Arctic cod, sand lance, slender eelblenny, and gelatinous snailfish larvae were in salinities exceeding 25 practical salinity units (p.s.u.). Arctic shanny, sculpins, and capelin larvae were more abundant at salinities between 1 and 25 p.s.u.. Burbot and coregonid larvae were clearly associated with fresh or brackish waters even when caught in the Bay.
