Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infections in mice were terminated more rapidly than in rats and immunologically induced damage occurred earlier. Like rats, mice expelled damaged worms more rapidly than normal worms. Recipients of cells from the spleen or mesenteric node of immune mice expelled their worms by day 8 of the infection. Recipients of cells alone or antiserum alone did not expel their worms by day 5 but mice given both cells and antiserum expelled their worms by this stage of the infection. Damaged worms were expelled more rapidly than normal worms from mice given immune cells, This work indicated that antibodies and cells collaborate to expel N. brasiliensis from mice as has been shown to occur in rats.  相似文献

1. Mitochondria from the parasitic nematode worm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis produce H2O2 in the energized state; higher rates of H2O2 production were observed in the presence of the uncoupler carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone. 2. Antimycin A inhibits respiration and H2O2 production by 70 and 65% respectively; the residual activities can be attributed to alternative electron-transport pathway(s). 3. o-Hydroxydiphenyl and 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene, inhibitors of alternative electron transport, inhibit respiration by 37% and H2O2 production by 26%. 4. Another inhibitor of alternative electron transport, salicylhydroxamic acid, shows a complex mode of action; low concentrations (less than 0.5 mM) stimulate respiration and H2O2 production, whereas 2 mM-salicylhydroxamic acid inhibited respiration by 35% and stopped H2O2 production completely. 5. O2 thresholds were observed for the inhibition of respiration at O2 concentrations greater than 57.7 microM and inhibition of H2O2 production (greater than 20.5 microM-O2); apparent Km values for oxygen were 5.5 microM and 3.0 microM respectively. 6. In the presence of antimycin A the O2-inhibition thresholds and apparent Km values for O2 of respiration and H2O2 production matched closely, suggesting that the alternative oxidase is a likely site of H2O2 production. 7. These results are discussed in relation to O2 toxicity to N. brasiliensis.  相似文献

The daily administration of inhibitors of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine to rats infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis prevented the onset of the rapid phase of worm expulsion. Adult and nymphal antennae of the cockroach, Leucophaea maderae, contain nine or more different morphological types of sense organs. There is no outwardly apparent sexual dimorphism in adult antennae. Nymphs are dificient in gross numbers of sensilla. Sense organs are classified morphologically by their similarity to known types of sensila and are assigned functions on this basis and preliminary electrophysiological data: Sensilla chaetica (A), thick-walled mechanoreceptive hairs in groups on the antennal base; S. chaetica (B), thick-walled setae which are tactile and probably chemoreceptive, occurring in the antennal base and flagellum; S. trichodea (A), thin-walled chemoreceptive hairs of the flagellum; S. trichodea (B), minute hairs on the scape and pedicel; S. basiconica, thin-walled chemoreceptive pegs, and S. coeloconica (?pit-pegs”?) of the flagellum; S. campaniformia and scolopidia, mechanoreceptors in the base and flagellum; plus Johnston's organ and/or connective chrodotonal organs in the pedicel. Calculations based on absolute counts of sensilla and their known innervation yield an estimate of about 3.3 × 104 sensilla and 105 cells per antenna.  相似文献

SUMMARY Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) exist as two morphs: a sighted (surface) form and a blind (cavefish) form. In the cavefish, some modules are lost, such as the eye and pigment modules, whereas others are expanded, such as the taste bud and cranial neuromast modules. We suggest that modularity can be viewed as being nested in a manner similar to Baupläne so that modules express unique sets of genes, cells, and processes. In terms of evolution, we conclude that natural selection can act on any of these hierarchical levels within modules or on all the sensory modules as a whole. We discuss interactions within and between modules with reference to the blind cavefish from both genetic and developmental perspectives. The cavefish represents an illuminating example of module interaction, uncoupling of modules, and module expansion.  相似文献

Summary In the hunting spider Cupiennius salei Keys, kinesthetic orientation towards a catching site from which it has previously been chased away is observed. This ability strongly depends on the lyriform slit sense organs found on femur and tibia of the walking legs. The animals miss the original catching site, if these organs are destroyed on all legs. The mean angular deviation of the starting angles of the returns increases significantly as compared with intact spiders (P<0.005). The oversulphated galactosaminoglycans synthesized by rat mucosal mast cells were isolated from the small intestine of animals infected with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, which causes proliferation of these cells. The 35S-labelled polysaccharides were degraded by digestion with chondroitinase ABC, and the structures of the disaccharide products were determined by cleavage with mercuric acetate followed by electrophoretic characterization of the resultant sulphated monosaccharides. It was concluded that about half of the disulphated disaccharide units in the polysaccharide consisted of chondroitin sulphate E-type structures [GlcA-GalNAc(4,6-di-OSO3)], in which both sulphate groups were located on the N-acetylgalactosamine unit. The remainder consisted of isomeric structures with one sulphate group on the N-acetylgalactosamine residue and one on the hexuronic acid unit and presumably represented the dermatan sulphate-type sequence [IdoA(2-OSO3)-GalNAc(4-OSO3)].  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the lateral-line neuromasts in the ratfish, Chimaera monstrosa is described. The neuromasts rest at the bottom of open grooves and consist of sensory, supporting, basal and mantle cells. Each sensory cell is equipped with sensory hairs consisting of a single kinocilium and several stereocilia. There are several types of sensory hair arrangement, and cells with a particular arrangement form patches within the neuromast. There are two types of afferent synapse. The most common afferent synapse has a presynaptic body and is typically associated with an extensive system of anastomosing tubules on the presynaptic side. When the tubules are absent, vesicles surround the presynaptic body. These synapses are often associated into synaptic fields, containing up to 35 synaptic sites. The second type of afferent synapse does not have a presynaptic body and is not associated with the tubular system. The afferent synapses of the second type do not form synaptic fields and are uncommon. The efferent synapses are either associated with a postsynaptic sac or more commonly with a strongly osmiophilic postsynaptic membrane. The accessory cells are similar to those in the acoustico-lateralis organs of other aquatic vertebrates. A possibility of movement of the presynaptic bodies and of involvement of the tubular system in the turnover of the transmitter is discussed. A comparison of the hair tuft types in the neuromasts of Ch. monstrosa with those in the labyrinth of the goldfish and of the frog is attempted.  相似文献

1. Today, fish in the environment are inevitably exposed to chemical pollution. Although most hazardous substances are present at concentrations far below the lethal level, they may still cause serious damage to the life processes of these animals. 2. Fish depend on an intact nervous system, including their sense organs, for mediating relevant behaviour such as food search, predator recognition, communication and orientation. 3. Unfortunately, the nervous system is most vulnerable and injuries to its elements may dramatically change the behaviour and consequently the survival of fish. 4. Heavy metals are well known pollutants in the aquatic environment. Their interaction with relevant chemical stimuli may interfere with the communication between fish and environment. 5. The affinity for a number of ligands and macromolecules makes heavy metals most potent neurotoxins. 6. Secretory end-feet (or SEF) systems are present in Limnodrilus and Stylodrilus but are less highly organized than those of polychaetes. SEF contain secretory vesicles and abundant mitochondria. Typical neurosecretory terminals are not found within the brain although "neurosecretory" perikarya are present in all four species studied. In Limnodrilus, Stylodrilus and Enchytraeus extracerebral cells, of probable neurosecretory function, are invested by the pericapsular epithelium. Characteristically such cells bear several cilia. In these species and in Stylaria a pair of sensory cell groups is located anteriorly within the brain. These cells are ciliated but lack associated supporting cells.  相似文献
