The goal of this study was to develop and validate a finite element model (FEM) for use in the design of a flooring system that would provide a stable walking surface during normal locomotion but would also deform elastically under higher loads, such as those resulting from falls. The new flooring system is designed to reduce the peak force on the femoral neck during a lateral fall onto the hip. The new flooring system is passive in nature and exhibits two distinct stiffnesses. During normal activities, the floor remains essentially rigid. Upon impact, the floor collapses and becomes significantly softer. The flooring system consists of a multitude of columns supporting a continuous walking surface. The columns were designed to remain stiff up to a specific load and, after exceeding this load, to deform elastically. The flooring returns to its original shape after impact. Part I of this study presented finite element and experimental results demonstrating that the floor deflection during normal walking remained less than 2 mm. To facilitate the floor's development further, a nonlinear finite element model simulating the transient-impact response of a human hip against various floor configurations was developed. Nonlinearities included in the finite element models were: changing topology of deformable-body-to-deformable-body contact, snap-through buckling, soft tissue stiffness and damping, and large deformations. Experimental models developed for validating the finite element model included an anthropomorphic hip, an impact delivery mechanism, a data collection system, and four hand-fabricated floor tiles. The finite element model discussed in this study is shown to capture experimentally observed trends in peak femoral neck force reduction as a function of flooring design parameters. This study also indicates that a floor can be designed that deflects minimally during walking and reduces the peak force on the femoral neck during a fall-related impact by 15.2 percent. 相似文献

The mortality rate for infants awaiting a heart transplant is 40% because of the extremely limited number of donor organs. Ventricular assist devices (VADs), a common bridge-to-transplant solution in adults, are becoming a viable option for pediatric patients. A major obstacle faced by VAD designers is thromboembolism. Previous studies have shown that the interrelated flow characteristics necessary for the prevention of thrombosis in a pulsatile VAD are a strong inlet jet, a late diastolic recirculating flow, and a wall shear rate greater than 500 s(-1). Particle image velocimetry was used to compare the flow fields in the chamber of the 12 cc Penn State pediatric pulsatile VAD using two mechanical heart valves: Bjork-Shiley monostrut (BSM) tilting disk valves and CarboMedics (CM) bileaflet valves. In conjunction with the flow evaluation, wall shear data were calculated and analyzed to help quantify wall washing. The major orifice inlet jet of the device containing BSM valves was more intense, which led to better recirculation and wall washing than the three jets produced by the CM valves. Regurgitation through the CM valve served as a significant hindrance to the development of the rotational flow. 相似文献

The purpose of this simulation study was to analyze the effect of variation in Knee-Ankle-Foot-Orthosis stiffness on the joint power and the energy cost of walking. The effect of contractile tissue was simulated using linear elastic spring and viscous dampers in knee and ankle joints. Then, joint angles, ground reaction force, were collected from Twenty chronic hemiparesis subjects (15 males and 5 females) and twenty control subjects (14 males and 6 females), and spring stiffness were considered as the inputs. In this new study, the generated muscle torques were optimized by changing the stiffness as the desired output in the mathematical model attained by the MATLAB SimMechanics toolbox. Finally, the simulated mathematical model was introduced as an appropriate substitute in obtaining the optimized stiffness with a more convenient and efficient designed orthosis. 相似文献

It has been shown that gait parameters vary systematically with the slope of the surface when walking uphill (UH) or downhill (DH) (Andriacchi et al., 1977; Crowe et al., 1996; Kawamura et al., 1991; Kirtley et al., 1985; McIntosh et al., 2006; Sun et al., 1996). However, gait trials performed on inclined surfaces have been subject to certain technical limitations including using fixed speed treadmills (TMs) or, alternatively, sampling only a few gait cycles on inclined ramps. Further, prior work has not analyzed upper body kinematics. This study aims to investigate effects of slope on gait parameters using a self-paced TM (SPTM) which facilitates more natural walking, including measuring upper body kinematics and gait coordination parameters.Gait of 11 young healthy participants was sampled during walking in steady state speed. Measurements were made at slopes of +10°, 0° and −10°. Force plates and a motion capture system were used to reconstruct twenty spatiotemporal gait parameters. For validation, previously described parameters were compared with the literature, and novel parameters measuring upper body kinematics and bilateral gait coordination were also analyzed. Results showed that most lower and upper body gait parameters were affected by walking slope angle. Specifically, UH walking had a higher impact on gait kinematics than DH walking. However, gait coordination parameters were not affected by walking slope, suggesting that gait asymmetry, left-right coordination and gait variability are robust characteristics of walking. The findings of the study are discussed in reference to a potential combined effect of slope and gait speed. Follow-up studies are needed to explore the relative effects of each of these factors. 相似文献

Two flow parameters are proposed for the analysis of flows that have potential to damage animal cells. They are the state of stress (characterized by the second invariant of the stress tensor) and the flow classification parameter R(D) (which is related to the possibility of stress relaxation). We consider the flow that occurs when a 1.7-mm bubble collapses at a liquid interface. Using these two parameters, we show the regions in which the flow is strong in terms of high hydrodynamic stresses and elongation characteristics. (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Bilateral lesions of the pelvic nerve (BLPN) result in dystocia, but the processes which control this effect are not fully understood. Plasma progesterone, relaxin, and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were measured in blood samples taken in the morning (AM) and evening (PM) of Days 20-23 of gestation from rats with BLPN or sham neurectomy. Ten of 11 sham-operated control animals delivered their entire litters by Day 23 of gestation, but animals with BLPN did not complete parturition by Day 23 when they were sacrificed. Progesterone concentrations were greater in rats with BLPN than in sham-operated rats on Day 20 PM and Day 21 AM, but hormone concentrations declined to minimal values by Day 22 in both groups. Relaxin concentrations were greater in rats with BLPN than in sham-operated rats on Day 21 PM. Thereafter, relaxin concentrations decreased to reach minimum values on Day 23 in both groups. LH concentrations were low throughout the period of study in rats with BLPN; however, a postpartum LH surge was detected in all sham-operated animals. Data from this study indicate that the pelvic nerve does not control parturition by modulating serum relaxin and progesterone concentrations; however, these data suggest that impulses carried by the pelvic nerve influence ovarian secretion of these hormones. In addition, these data indicate that the pelvic nerve transmits stimuli from the cervix to the hypothalamus to facilitate the postpartum LH surge. 相似文献

Vibrio spp. thrive in warm water and moderate salinity, and they are associated with aquatic invertebrates, notably crustaceans and zooplankton. At least 12 Vibrio spp. are known to cause infection in humans, and Vibrio cholerae is well documented as the etiological agent of pandemic cholera. Pathogenic non-cholera Vibrio spp., e.g., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, cause gastroenteritis, septicemia, and other extra-intestinal infections. Incidence of vibriosis is rising globally, with evidence that anthropogenic factors, primarily emissions of carbon dioxide associated with atmospheric warming and more frequent and intense heatwaves, significantly influence environmental parameters, e.g., temperature, salinity, and nutrients, all of which can enhance growth of Vibrio spp. in aquatic ecosystems. It is not possible to eliminate Vibrio spp., as they are autochthonous to the aquatic environment and many play a critical role in carbon and nitrogen cycling. Risk prediction models provide an early warning that is essential for safeguarding public health. This is especially important for regions of the world vulnerable to infrastructure instability, including lack of ‘water, sanitation, and hygiene’ (WASH), and a less resilient infrastructure that is vulnerable to natural calamity, e.g., hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes, and/or social disruption and civil unrest, arising from war, coups, political crisis, and economic recession. Incorporating environmental, social, and behavioural parameters into such models allows improved prediction, particularly of cholera epidemics. We have reported that damage to WASH infrastructure, coupled with elevated air temperatures and followed by above average rainfall, promotes exposure of a population to contaminated water and increases the risk of an outbreak of cholera. Interestingly, global predictive risk models successful for cholera have the potential, with modification, to predict diseases caused by other clinically relevant Vibrio spp. In the research reported here, the focus was on environmental parameters associated with incidence and distribution of clinically relevant Vibrio spp. and their role in disease transmission. In addition, molecular methods designed for detection and enumeration proved useful for predictive modelling and are described, namely in the context of prediction of environmental conditions favourable to Vibrio spp., hence human health risk. 相似文献

The simplest walking model: stability, complexity, and scaling. 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
We demonstrate that an irreducibly simple, uncontrolled, two-dimensional, two-link model, vaguely resembling human legs, can walk down a shallow slope, powered only by gravity. This model is the simplest special case of the passive-dynamic models pioneered by McGeer (1990a). It has two rigid massless legs hinged at the hip, a point-mass at the hip, and infinitesimal point-masses at the feet. The feet have plastic (no-slip, no-bounce) collisions with the slope surface, except during forward swinging, when geometric interference (foot scuffing) is ignored. After nondimensionalizing the governing equations, the model has only one free parameter, the ramp slope gamma. This model shows stable walking modes similar to more elaborate models, but allows some use of analytic methods to study its dynamics. The analytic calculations find initial conditions and stability estimates for period-one gait limit cycles. The model exhibits two period-one gait cycles, one of which is stable when 0 < gamma < 0.015 rad. With increasing gamma, stable cycles of higher periods appear, and the walking-like motions apparently become chaotic through a sequence of period doublings. Scaling laws for the model predict that walking speed is proportional to stance angle, stance angle is proportional to gamma 1/3, and that the gravitational power used is proportional to v4 where v is the velocity along the slope. 相似文献
