Field-based experiments were conducted to evaluate the fate and infectivity of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) in grasshopper cadavers in the Sahel. Unlike uninfected cadavers, which were rapidly scavenged, those infected with the fungus persisted in the environment for a number of weeks. The environmental factor most associated with cadaver disappearance was rainfall. The high environmental humidity associated with rainfall was also required for sporulation of the fungus on host cadavers, although the likelihood of sporulation differed between microsites. Characteristics of the infection profile from infective cadavers were investigated by the sequential exposure of uninfected hosts to sporulating cadavers in field cages. This experiment revealed that cadavers remained infective for > 30 days, with the net infectivity changing through time. The most likely explanation for these changes is climatic influences on both the fungus and host. High humidity was not required for infection. A measurement of the transmission coefficient between healthy hosts and sporulating cadavers in the field was obtained at a realistic density of infectious cadavers. This revealed a figure of 0.45 m2 day–1. Overall, these experiments show that following host death, M. anisopliae var. acridum can be persistent in the environment, sporulate on host cadavers and reinfect new hosts at a realistically low field density, although at least in arid or semi-arid areas, rainfall may be critical to the horizontal transmission of this pathogen. 相似文献

The stand structure and disturbance history in a sub-boreal coniferous forest dominated byPicea jezoensis, Picea glehnii andAbies sachalinensis were investigated in four study plots set up in Taisetsuzan National Park, Japan. The effect of stand characteristics on
the growth and mortality rates of understory trees was examined. Although all the stands showed inverse J-shape d.b.h. (diameter
at breast height) distributions, the age structure and disturbance history differed amongst the stands. The stands with wide
d.b.h. distribution (i.e. large CV and skewness) were more uneven-aged than those with narrow d.b.h. distribution (i.e. small
CV and skewness). The disturbance-return interval based on the model of Hett and Loucks was 31 to 65 years. The gap ratio
in the canopy was also different among the stands. These suggest that the variations in stand structure represent different
occurrences of natural disturbances. Furthermore, the structural features such as size structure, canopy gap ratio and density
of canopy trees also affected the growth dynamics of understory trees (≥2 m in height and <10 cm in diameter at breast height).
The growth and mortality rates of understory trees changed with the canopy gap ratio and canopy tree density. The understory
trees of stands with wide canopy d.b.h. distribution had higher growth and canopy recruitment rates than those of stands with
narrow canopy d.b.h. distribution, contributing to the maintenance of continuous stand stratification. The understory trees
of stands with narrow canopy d.b.h. distribution showed lower growth and higher mortality rates than those of stands with
narrow canopy d.b.h. distribution, leading to the formation of a single-canopy structure. It is suggested that natural disturbance
governs the regeneration process in the future by affecting the growth and mortality patterns of understory trees through
the stand structure (size and age structure, canopy tree density, canopy gap ratio). 相似文献

ABSTRACTCabbage seedpod weevil, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an invasive alien species that impacts seed production of canola, Brassica napus and B. rapa (Brassicaceae), one of Canada’s major agricultural crops. To determine the need for and potential impact of introduction of one or more natural enemies for biological control it is essential to understand the mortality factors associated with C. obstrictus both in the native range and in the introduced range. Life tables were constructed for Ontario and British Columbia populations to determine the mortality factors affecting C. obstrictus. These were compared with life tables generated in Switzerland, the area of origin of the weevil. Results indicated that introduction of an exotic specialist parasitoid into canola growing regions of Canada would substantially reduce C. obstrictus populations. This study is the first to compare life tables of an invasive pest in the areas of origin and introduction. 相似文献

The leaf-mining fly Calycomyza eupatorivora Spencer (Diptera: Agromyzidae) has become widely established in the eastern regions of South Africa, following its release for the biological control of the invasive shrub Chromolaena odorata (L.) King and Robinson. This study was conducted to gain some insight into the impact of C. eupatorivora populations, by assessing their seasonal activity, habitat preferences, levels of leaf exploitation and extent of larval mortality in the field over a 1-year period. Leaf mining intensity was poorly synchronised with leaf availability, with leaf exploitation peaking at the end of the growing season of C. odorata. Although significantly more mines were recovered on plants growing in shaded situations, the percentage of available leaves that were exploited for mining was not significantly different between plants growing in shaded versus open situations. Overall, the levels of leaf damage were trivial with mines recovered from <5% of available leaves that were sampled during the study. Besides leaf-quality requirements, these low levels of leaf exploitation may have been influenced by high larval mortality which varied between 60 and 83%, depending on whether lower or higher estimates were used. These evaluations have verified the results of earlier laboratory studies which suggested that the impact of C. eupatorivora on mature populations of C. odorata in South Africa will be negligible. 相似文献
