In 1909 John Smith, a Scottish naturalist and geologist,described 23 «genera and 51 «species of trace fossils from small patches of sediment associated with andesite lava flows at Dunure, Ayrshire. He interpreted the traces as evidence of a diverse invertebrate fauna which inhabited small pools and fissures in the lava surface between eruptions. Smith's collection (c. 300 specimens) was presented to the British Geological Survey, Edinburgh but has remained largely unstudied.Re-examination of the Smith collection shows thatit came from 3 separate localities which differ in composition of the ichnofaunas, associated sediments and sedimentary structures. Arthropod trackways dominate the ichnofauna occurring in laminated siltstone frequently with ripple marks and foam marks suggesting formation in shallow lacustrine conditions. Preservational and behavioural analysis of trace fossils reveals about 10 valid ichnogenera of locomotion and swimming trackways, resting traces, feeding trails but few burrows. Presence of early terrestrial arthropod traces is uncertain. Palaeocological interpretation is of ephemeral lakes in distal braid-plain situation subject to subsurface invasion of andesite lava producing fluidization and deformation of wet sediment. The Dunure ichnocoenosis shows unique diversity of Devonian arthropod trace fossils.  相似文献

内蒙古桌子山地区中奥陶统公乌素组遗迹化石十分丰富.本文共鉴定、描述14个遗迹属、17个遗迹种,其中1新遗迹属——Biscopulatichnus、4新遗种和6未定种.并根据不同遗迹属在不同层位中的相对丰度,建立了4个遗迹组合,自下而上的顺序是:1. Taenidium-Phycodes 组合;2. Volkichnium 组合;3. Helminthopsis 组合;4. Granularia-Circulichnus 组合,大致相当于 Seilacher (1967) 的 Zoophycos 遗迹相,反映出公乌素组沉积期,水体较深且宁静、缺氧、有机质含量高,推测应为大陆斜坡环境.  相似文献

Recognition of evaporite formations from continental Tertiary basins of Spain provides evidence that trace fossils (including rhizoliths) can be abundant in some saline lake systems and their study helps in palaeoenvironmental interpretation of ancient continental evaporite sequences. Six main types of trace fossils have been distinguished and include: (1) networks of small rhizoliths; (2) large rhizoliths; (3) tangle-patterned small burrows; (4) isolated large burrows; (5) L-shaped traces; and (6) vertebrate tracks. Rhizoliths were related to both marginal areas of hypersaline lakes and lakes of moderately high saline waters. In these settings, pedoturbation resulted from colonization by grasses and bushes of distinct lake subenvironments. The activity of burrowing invertebrate faunas was especially intense in lakes of moderately concentrated brines from which gypsum was the main evaporite mineral deposited. A specific gypsum lithofacies (‘bioturbated gypsum deposits') forming thick, massive beds has a widespread occurrence in many of the basins. Tangle-patterned small burrows and minor isolated large burrows constitute the typical trace fossil types within the gypsum. The traces are interpreted as having been caused by burrowing insect larvae, probably chironomids, coleopterans and annelids. The behaviour of these organisms in recent lake environments yields information about the salinity range of lake waters from which gypsum precipitated. Concentration values averaging 100–150 g/l may be thus deduced though some organisms involved in the formation of the traces can tolerate higher salinities. The combined analysis of lithofacies and trace fossils from the lacustrine evaporite sequences contributes to the study of distinct saline lake subenvironments as well as changes in the sedimentary evolution of the lake systems. Consequently, trace fossils can provide valuable insight for palaeoenvironmental analysis of at least some evaporite formations that accumulated in continental settings.  相似文献

Certain ichnogenera from the Podhale Flysch Basin do not occur randomly, but are grouped in distinct horizons, which are useful in mapping. The position of certain tuffite beds proves an approximate isochronism of those trace fossil horizons. Changes of the life conditions, among them especially oxygenation of the sea bottom, were responsible for that ichnologic differentiation. Profuse Occurrences of Taphrhelminthopsis are mainly connected with the presence of lighter, bluish shales, which indicates a well-oxygenated bottom. More distal and frequent sedimentation of turbidites could positively influence the preser-vational potential of the surface forms (very good state of preservation of Taphrhelminthopsis suggests that preservation of surface forms was frequent in the flysch basin), but the O2 condition was the main controlling factor for the occurrences of ichnofauna. Most discriminating were trace makers of pre-depositional (mud-dwelling) Taphrhelminthopsis , and they were most probably irregular echinoids, while soft-bodied trace makers of pre- and post-depositional Planolites (post-depositional means sand-dwellers) were the most tolerant ones. An increased level of biological activity connected with a shift in the OMZ could have been the reason why Taphrhelminthopsis became so profuse in one period. Concerning preservational problems, some complications in determining pre- and post-depositional forms in the case of composite beds are presented.  相似文献

山东莱阳早白垩阳群自下而上分为瓦屋夼组,林寺山组,止风庄组,水南组,龙旺庄组和曲格庄组。为一套河湖相沉积,产有较丰富,分异度较高的非海相遗迹化石和兽脚类恐龙足迹化石,共鉴定出遗迹属11个,未定属1个,其中遗迹种9个,未定种2个,遗迹化石是:Cochlichnus anguines,Diplocraterion parallelun,Helminthoidichnites tenuis,Palaeophycus tubularis,Planolites montanus ,Scolica sp.,Scoyenia gracilis,Skolithos linearis,Taenidium cameromensis,Thalassinoides sp.,恐龙足迹化石是:Paragrallator yangi,这些化石按习性可分为4类,即:居住构造, 爬行迹,觅食[迹和牧食迹,其中又以前3种为主,遗迹化石在剖面上的分布不均匀,以上部的水南组,龙旺庄,曲格庄3个组最丰富。  相似文献

The ichnofossils and rhizoliths of the Oligocene Jebel Qatrani Formation of Egypt are among the best preserved, most diverse in form, and most abundant of such structures yet recognized in fluvial rocks. Twenty-one forms are described. The ichnofauna contains traces (domichnia, fodinichnia, cubichnia) of probable annelid, insect, crustacean, and vertebrate origin. These include the first described fossil nest structures and gallery systems of subterranean termites (Isoptera), the first examples of Ophiomorpha from wholly fluvial rocks, and the first fossil vertebrate burrows from the African Tertiary. Rhizoliths associated with the ichnofauna and those occurring elsewhere document a variety of small, wetland plants, coastal mangroves, and much larger trees. The environment suggested by these traces is consistent with the coastal, tropical to subtropical, monsoonal rain forest, with adjacent more open areas, that is indicated by independent evidence of sedimentology, paleontology, and paleopedology.  相似文献

遗迹化石是埃迪卡拉纪存在两侧对称动物最有力的证据。但多数埃迪卡拉纪遗迹化石为简单、水平的表面爬迹或潜穴。在湖北三峡地区灯影组石板滩段含典型埃迪卡拉软躯体化石的地层中新发现一类形态特别的化石,呈蝌蚪状,一端膨大,一端细管状。通过对化石形态、同位素分析以及沉积学特征的研究,说明该化石为遗迹化石,而不是实体化石。蝌蚪状化石为一种复合迹,垂向活动形成球状的膨大端,平行藻席层活动形成近于水平的潜穴,反映了造迹生物垂向切穿藻席层并沿藻席层进行觅食的行为。该发现说明了在埃迪卡拉纪晚期已有两侧对称动物开始形成较为复杂的潜穴。  相似文献

Abstract

Peculiar meniscate burrows with three sediment cords occur in early to middle Miocene tidal-flat deposits of southwestern Japan. Two of the cords are situated at the bottom and the other is at its center. Detailed observations of the burrow structures and comparative neoichnological studies of modern spatangoid burrows in a tidal flat revealed that the former two were true drainage tubes and the latter was fecal in origin. The trace fossil was thus assigned to the ichnogenus Scolicia. Based on these findings, a new ichnospecies Scolicia shirahamensis isp. nov. has been described here. The central sediment cord is seemingly identical to the drainage tube of the ichnogenus Bichordites, another ichnogenus that has been commonly ascribed to a fossil spatangoid burrow, similar to Scolicia. Careless ichnogeneric identification of a spatangoid burrow, based only on the central sediment cord, therefore, may produce an incorrect identification.  相似文献

U-shaped, pouch-like burrows with parallel limbs, covered with short scratches arranged in sets, occur in the thalweg of the Oh?e river in NW Czech Republic. Similar, but smaller burrows with rare scratches, not arranged in sets, occur in the thalweg of the Drw?ca river in N Poland. Probably, they are produced by larvae and/or nymphs of Palingenia and Polymitarcis (Ephoron), respectively. In both localities, they burrowed in firmground surfaces at shallow depths. The burrowed surfaces were emerged during low water levels. A review of recent mayfly burrows shows that they are 1) U-shaped pouches with parallel limbs and septum, which may be covered with short scratches and are oriented perpendicular to the bottom, irrespective of its inclination, or 2) wide U-shape burrows with divergent limbs, which may be branched. In the fossil record, the ichnogenera Fuersichnus, Asthenopodichnium, and Rhizocorallium are partly ascribed to mayfly burrows, but their comparison to the recent burrows shows that such interpretations are somewhat problematic. The mayfly burrows are potentially good indicators of aquatic, non-marine, well oxygenated, clean water environments.  相似文献

Summary Numerous gutter-like furrows, up to 60 cm wide and up to 9 m long are preserved at the interface “Macrocephalus Beds”/“Callovian Marl” over a surface of 20 by 200 m. They are interpreted as feeding traces made by large marine vertebrates, most likely plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs searching for food in the lime mud of the shallow Middle Jurassic sea floor. Possible prey animals were infaunal invertebrates (crustaceans) which produced an intricate meshwork of burrows (mainlyRhizocorallium irregulare andThalassinoides) in the bottom sediments, as well as infaunal bivalves. Evidence from cololites of predatory pelagic reptiles (ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs) as well as reptile regurgitalites indicate that these animals fed not only on fast-swimming vertebrates and cephalopods but also on epi- and endobenthic invertebrates. In addition, the cololites show that the predators ingested considerable amounts of bottom sediment. Different sizes and shapes of the traces suggest that the gutters were produced by different reptiles or age groups. Candidates for the widest gutters are pliosaurs. Of the marine vertebrates known from Jurassic time, only the snout of adult pliosaurs of the genusLiopleurodon was broad enough to produce gutters more than 40 cm wide. Smaller, less than 15 cm wide gutters, could have been made by plesiosauroids or by the narrow pointed snouts of ichthyosaurs. Almost identical traces described from the Oxfordian of Spain and similar but smaller traces from the Lower Devonian of Prague are equally interpreted as feeding traces on the sea floor. Feeding traces of vertebrates in bottom sediments may give detailed information on the hunting behaviour of the predators. However, the attribution of the traces to definite vertebrate taxa remains uncertain.

The Sácaras Formation (Albian, Lower Cretaceous) of the Serra Gelada succession (Prebetic of Alicante), southeast Spain, comprises carbonate‐rich, upwards thickening parasequences in which many types of trace fossils have been identified. The present study focuses on two types of tubular trace fossil characterized by features of their external coating. The first type is represented by a shell‐covered, structured trace fossil, up to 4?cm in diameter and 40?cm in length, built horizontally, from rectilinear (type 1) to gently curved (type 2), which envelopes an unstructured pipe of grey silty sediment. The coating is characterized by imbricated, flat particles, mainly orbitolinid foraminifers and other planar bioclasts, forming thin concentric layers; in cross section the bioclasts produce a typical plumed structure. This trace fossil represents a new ichnogenus and ichnospecies, here named Ereipichnus geladensis. Particle arrangement of the external coating is similar to that of terebelloid tubes, but Ereipichnus is a horizontal trace fossil, whereas structured worm tubes are vertical. The second type is a grain‐coated trace fossil, tubular in shape, with a simple internal structure. The coating is often reddish with respect to the neighbouring dark grey sediment and shows a slightly coarser‐grained texture, which envelopes the internal muddy pipe. This type, which yielded echinoids, was produced by irregular or heart‐shaped sea‐urchins (spatangoids) and is attributed to Scolicia or Cardioichnus. Facies analysis of the Serra Gelada succession with Ereipichnus and Scolicia or Cardioichnus locally shows other types of branched trace fossils (primarily represented by different forms of Thalassinoides) and bioturbation is developed in tiers, increasing upwards in abundance and diversity.  相似文献

Abstract:  Tube-like traces of organisms belonging to the ichnogenus Chaetosalpinx Sokolov have been considered in the literature as commensal endobiontic organisms of tabulate corals. Their position between the corallites (or sometimes within the septa), perforation of the host's skeleton and soft tissue, modification of its phenotype and a possible inhibition of its growth show that the relationship between these organisms and tabulate corals can best be interpreted as parasitism rather than commensalism, as previously suggested. Such an interpretation may be extended to the ichnogenera Helicosalpinx Oekentorp and Actinosalpinx Sokolov, which show identical placement within the host colony and similar features, such as the absence of their own wall.  相似文献

Dinantian carbonates of the Tournai and Dinant regions, southern Belgium, contain several trace fossil assemblages. These assemblages consist of the following ichnogenera:Cruziana, Rhizocorallium,Scalarituba, Scolicia, Skolithos, Phycosiphon, Planolites andZoophycos. Scalarituba andPhycosiphon are reported for the first time from the Carboniferous of Western Europe. The ichnofossils occur in discrete ichnofacies.Skolithos andZoophycos ichnofacies occur within the Ivorian (Upper Tournaisian). TheCruziana andSkolithos ichnofacies are found in the Moliniacian (Lower Visean). In the Dinant region, ichnofossils record a change from infauna to epifauna at the Ivorian-Moliniacian transition. Woodgrained chert is recognized and corresponds stratigraphically and palaeogeographically with those from the Western Interior United States.  相似文献

The ichnospeciesBolonia lata Meunier, 1886 is a straight, bilobate trace fossil with a somewhat heart-shaped outline in cross-section. It has previously been reported from various localities mainly from the Jurassic by different authors under various names such asGyrochorte, Scolicia, orProtovirgularia. Because none of these previous determinations fully agrees with the trace fossils’ morphology, the ‘forgotten name’ is reintroduced, and due to a lack of type material a neotype from the type area of Boulonnais, France is proposed. The ichnogenus is currently represented only by one ichnospecies,B. lata Meunier, 1886. Diagnostic criteria ofBolonia and morphologically related trace fossils such asScolicia, Gyrochorte, Bichordites, “Taphrhelminthopsis nelsoni”, andProtovirgularia are discussed, the synonymy ofB. lata is provided and finally a discussion on the possible producer ofBolonia is given.   相似文献

The Paleocene to Middle Eocene Tarcau Sandstone at Buzau Valley, eastern Carpathians, Romania, records sedimentation in a turbidite system. These strata contain a diverse and abundant pre‐ and postdepositional ichnofauna consisting of 35 ichnogenera and 54 ichnospecies. The predepositional assemblage is rich in graphoglyptids and ornate grazing trails; simple grazing trails, resting traces, and feeding structures also occur. The predepositional assemblage includes Acan‐thorhaphe, Belorhaphe, Cardioichnus, Circulichnus, Coch‐lichnus, Cosmorhaphe, Desmograpton, Fustiglyphus, Gordia, Helicolithus, Helminthopsis, Helminthorhaphe, Lorenzinia, Megagrapton, Paleodictyon, Paleomeandron, Protopaleodictyon, Scolicia (S. strozzii), Spirorhaphe, Spirophycus, Treptichnus, and Urohelminthoida. The ich‐nodiversity, composition, ethology, and morphologic complexity of the predepositional association are indicative of the Nereites ichnofacies. The postdepositional association essentially consists of dwelling, feeding, and grazing traces, and is represented by Chondrites, Glockerichnus, Halopoa, Nereites, Ophiomorpha, Phycodes, Planolites, Polykampton, Scolicia(S. prisca. S. striata), Taenidium, Thalassinoides, and Zoophycos. Palaeophycus occurs in both assemblages. Allochthonous Teredolites is present in wood fragments, The postdepositional association includes elements of the Skolithos ichnofacies and facies‐crossing forms that are commonly present in deep‐marine deposits, Elements of the Skolithos ichnofacies are present not only in the most proximal parts of the turbidite system, but also in distal parts. The number of predepositional forms greatly exceeds postdepositional ones, reflecting a dominance of K‐selected over r‐selected population strategies in a stable environment. High levels of ichnodiversity in the Tarcau Sandstone are comparable with deep‐sea ichnofaunas from the Polish Carpathians and with other flysch trace‐fossil assemblages of similar age. This abundant and diverse Eocene ichnofauna supports the idea of extremely rich deep‐sea ichnofaunas in the Cenozoic.  相似文献

The increase in species and specimens of fossils in the uppermost part of the Maastrichtian White Chalk is interpreted as a result of reduced depth. The absence of bryozoans, brachiopods, and regular echinoids in the Cerithium Limestone indicates sedimentation in tidal pools. After sedimentation of the Cerithium Limestone, burrowing activity followed. A burrow of Brissopneustes danicus similar to burrows of the recent Echinocardium cordatum is described. Callianassa and its burrows are found in the Upper Danian calcarenite but not in the Lower Danian or Maastrichtian of Denmark. The dominant type of burrows along the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary has presumably been formed by the crustacean Ctenocheles.
The early post-Maastrichtian burrowing activity was succeeded by (1) induration of the bottom sediment and a slight abrasion (2) dissolution of aragonite shells and siliceous sponges, (3) offshore sedimentation and filling of the burrows with Lower Danian chalk mud, bryozoan fragments and other fossil remains, and (4) settling in the deeper part of the soft chalk sediment and precipitation of flint in or around burrows near the surface of the sediment.  相似文献

川中-川南地区上三叠统滨浅湖沉积中产有丰富的动物遗迹化石,识别为3大类6属8种,包括Sko-lithos linearis,S.verticalis,Ophiomorpha nodosa,Planolites beverleyensis,P.montanus,Palaeophycus tubularis,Taenidiumsatanassi和Cochlichnus anguineus,另外,逃逸构造也很发育。这些遗迹化石主要是无脊椎动物的居住迹、进食迹和觅食迹,大多为全浮痕和上浮痕保存。根据遗迹化石的组合特征及其沉积环境,可识别出3个遗迹组合:1)Skolithos linearis遗迹组合,主要由长的垂直或高角度倾斜的悬食居住潜穴构成,反映高能的砂质滨湖环境;2)Cochlichnus-Planolites遗迹组合,主要由进食迹和牧食迹组成,形成于低能的滨湖沼泽环境;3)Skolithos-Planol-ites遗迹组合,以居住潜穴和进食潜穴为主,遗迹化石的丰度较高,代表潮湿气候条件下的浅湖环境。根据生物扰动的分布及扰动强度,浅湖中可识别出两类扰动类型,即1)砂泥边界扰动,扰动主要发育于砂泥交界处,代表了浅湖下部环境;2)薄砂层扰动,扰动主要发育于薄砂层中,主要出现于浅湖中下部沉积中。  相似文献

The trace fossil Sinusichnus sinuosus Gibert 1996 is described and interpreted as an open burrow system, attributed to a crustacean tracemaker, that shares some features with fodinichnial networks, such as Thalassinoides and Ophiomorpha , and with graphoglyptid burrows, such as Protopaleodictyon and Cosmorhaphe. These similarities suggest that Sinusichnus could have been produced by an animal combining deposit-feeding and farming (or trapping) strategies. The Sinusichnus record has yielded juvenile and adult burrows, often in close association. On account of minor morphologic differences between the two, juvenile tracemakers could have employed an agrichnial feeding strategy, whereas adults could have employed fodinichnial feeding.  相似文献
