Multichannel omnivory by generalist predators, especially the use of both grazing and epigeic prey, has the potential to increase predator abundance and decrease herbivore populations. However, predator use of the epigeic web (soil surface detritus/microbe/algae consumers) varies considerably for reasons that are poorly understood. We therefore used a stable isotope approach to determine whether prey availability and predator hunting style (active hunting vs. passive web-building) impacted the degree of multichannel omnivory by the two most abundant predators on an intertidal salt marsh, both spiders. We found that carbon isotopic values of herbivores remained constant during the growing season, while values for epigeic feeders became dramatically more enriched such that values for the two webs converged in August. Carbon isotopic values for both spider species remained midway between the two webs as values for epigeic feeders shifted, indicating substantial use of prey from both food webs by both spider species. As the season progressed, prey abundance in the grazing food web increased while prey abundance in the epigeic web remained constant or declined. In response, prey consumption by the web-building spider shifted toward the grazing web to a much greater extent than did consumption by the hunting spider, possibly because passive web-capture is more responsive to changes in prey availability. Although both generalist predator species engaged in multichannel omnivory, hunting mode influenced the extent to which these predators used prey from the grazing and epigeic food webs, and could thereby influence the strength of trophic cascades in both food webs.  相似文献

Initially, aposematism, which is an unprofitable trait, e.g. noxiousness conspicuously advertised to predators, appears to be a paradox since conspicuousness should increase predation by naive predators. However, reluctance of predators for eating novel prey (e.g. neophobia) might balance the initial predation caused by inexperienced predators. We tested the novelty effects on initial predation and avoidance learning in two separate conspicuousness levels of aposematic prey by using a 'novel world' method. Half of the wild great tits (Parus major) were trained to eat cryptic prey prior to the introduction of an aposematic prey, which potentially creates a bias against the aposematic morph. Both prey types were equally novel for control birds and they should not have shown any biased reluctance for eating an aposematic prey. Knowledge of cryptic prey reduced the expected initial mortality of the conspicuous morph to a random level whereas control birds initially ate the conspicuous morph according to the visibility risk. Birds learned to avoid conspicuous prey in both treatments but knowledge of cryptic prey did not increase the rate of avoidance learning. Predators' knowledge of cryptic prey did not reduce the predation of the less conspicuous aposematic prey and additionally predators did not learn to avoid the less conspicuous prey. These results indicate that predator psychology, which was shown as reluctance for attacking novel conspicuous prey, might have been important in the evolution of aposematism.  相似文献

Social information in breeding site selection has received extensive study; however, few attempts have been made to link this process to pre‐existing models. We examine the importance of social information to three pertinent models of habitat selection that describe breeding aggregations and spatial patterns: 1) the ideal despotic distribution (IDD) which considers conspecific competition and habitat availability, 2) the perceptual constraints model which accounts for patch selection when animals experience a threshold of undetectable difference in quality, and 3) the “neighbourhood model” which predicts concordance between resources and settlers can be disrupted by conspecific attraction when resources are patchy. These models all predict initial settlers will select a high quality patch first. However, their predictions of subsequent settlement behaviour in remaining patches differ: the IDD predicts subsequent settlers will be distributed regularly, the perceptual constraints model predicts a random distribution, and the neighbourhood model predicts clustering from conspecific attraction. We examined which model best described settlement patterns of bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus and savannah sparrow Passerculus sandwichensis, in the context of social information. We observed settlement timing, quantified available resources, and determined where they occurred in the highest (local population “core”) and lowest densities (local population “periphery”). We then assessed whether individuals in the periphery settled in greater concordance with resources or conspecific presence. Core territories were clustered strongly on relevant resources, and these territory holders were older than in the periphery. Peripheral territories were likewise clustered but did not always co‐occur with the best available resources, matching the neighbourhood model prediction that social information may not always direct them to the best sites available. This suggests older individuals used their own experience to locate ideal habitat, whereas younger individuals attempted to aggregate on seemingly ideal habitat by using conspecific location; such information asymmetry due to age can be viewed as an “ideal aggregative distribution”.  相似文献

Predator size and the suitability of a common prey   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Although a predator’s mass should influence the suitability of its prey, this subject has received little direct attention. We studied the capture and processing of an abundant syrphid fly Toxomerus marginatus (c. 4 mg) by 0.6- to 40-mg juvenile crab spiders Misumena vatia (Thomisidae) to determine how profitability, relative profitability (profitability/predator mass), overall gain in mass, and relative gain in mass differed with predator mass, and whether foraging changed concurrently. In multi-prey experiments, the smallest successful spiders (0.6–3.0 mg) extracted less mass from flies, and did so more slowly, than large spiders. This gain was proportionately similar to that of 10- to 40-mg spiders with access to many Toxomerus. However, many small spiders failed to capture flies. When we gave spiders only a single Toxomerus, the smallest ones again extracted mass more slowly than the large ones and increased in mass less than the large ones, but increased in mass proportionately more than large ones. Relative gain in mass from a single prey decreased with increasing spider mass. Spiders larger than 10 mg all extracted similar amounts of mass from a single Toxomerus at similar rates, but varied in time spent between captures. Thus, Toxomerus changes with spider mass from a large, hard-to-capture bonanza to a small, easy-to-capture item of low per capita value. However, Toxomerus is common enough that large spiders can capture it en masse, thereby compensating for its decline in per capita value. Received: 7 May 1996 / Accepted: 23 September 1996  相似文献

Linking local communities to a metacommunity can positively affect diversity by enabling immigration of dispersal-limited species and maintenance of sink populations. However, connectivity can also negatively affect diversity by allowing the spread of strong competitors or predators. In a microcosm experiment with five ciliate species as prey and a copepod as an efficient generalist predator, we analysed the effect of connectivity on prey species richness in metacommunities that were either unconnected, connected for the prey, or connected for both prey and predator. Presence and absence of predator dispersal was cross-classified with low and high connectivity. The effect of connectivity on local and regional richness strongly depended on whether corridors were open for the predator. Local richness was initially positively affected by connectivity through rescue of species from stochastic extinctions. With predator dispersal, however, this positive effect soon turned negative as the predator spread over the metacommunity. Regional richness was unaffected by connectivity when local communities were connected only for the prey, while predator dispersal resulted in a pronounced decrease of regional richness. The level of connectivity influenced the speed of richness decline, with regional species extinctions being delayed for one week in weakly connected metacommunities. While connectivity enabled rescue of prey species from stochastic extinctions, deterministic extinctions due to predation were not overcome through reimmigration from predator-free refuges. Prey reimmigrating into these sink habitats appeared to be directly converted into increased predator abundance. Connectivity thus had a positive effect on the predator, even when the predator was not dispersing itself. Our study illustrates that dispersal of a species with strong negative effects on other community members shapes the dispersal-diversity relationship. When connections enable the spread of a generalist predator, positive effects of connectivity on prey species richness are outweighed by regional extinctions through predation.  相似文献

Environmental fluctuations have been proposed to enhance the coexistence of competing phenotypes. Evaluations are here presented on the effects of prey density and short‐term temporal clumping of prey availability on the relative foraging success of unequal interferers in social forager groups of juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta feeding on drifting invertebrate prey (frozen chironomids). Groups of three trout with established linear dominance hierarchies (dominant, intermediate and subordinate) were subjected to three different total numbers of prey, combined with three different levels of temporal clumping of prey arrival, resulting in nine treatment combinations. Higher total number of prey increased the consumption for all dominance ranks, while higher temporal clumping decreased the consumption for the dominant individuals and increased the consumption for the subordinate individuals. The proportion of prey eaten was smaller at high prey numbers. Similarly, there was a trend that increased temporal clumping also decreased the proportion of prey eaten. We conclude that density and temporal clumping of prey contribute to the coexistence of unequal interferers, and that there is a potential positive feedback between prey behaviour and phenotypic coexistence through decreased per capita predation risk for prey that drift synchronously in high densities.  相似文献

We develop a model of predators foraging within a single patch,on prey that become temporarily immune to predation (depressed)after detecting a predator. Interference through prey depressionoccurs because the proportion of vulnerable prey (and henceintake rate) decreases as predator density increases. Predatorsin our model are not forced to move randomly within the patch,as is the case in other similar models, but can avoid areasof depressed prey and so preferentially forage over vulnerableprey. We compare the extent to which different avoidance rules(e.g., move more quickly over depressed prey or turn if approachingdepressed prey) influence the amount of time spent foragingover depressed and vulnerable prey, and how this influencesthe strength of interference. Although based on a different mechanism, our model produces two similar general predictionsto interference models based on direct interactions betweenpredators: the strength of interference increases with (1)increased competitor density and (2) decreased prey encounterrate. This suggests that there are underlying similarities in the nature of interference even when it arises through differentprocesses. Not surprisingly, avoidance of depressed prey cansubstantially reduce the strength of interference comparedwith random foraging. However, we identify the region of themodel's parameter space in which this reduction is particularlylarge and show that the only system for which suitable dataare available, redshank Tringa totanus feeding on Corophium volutator, falls within this region. The model shows that, byadjusting its search path to avoid areas of depressed prey,a predator can substantially reduce the amount of the interferenceit experiences and that this applies over a wide range of parameterspace, including the region occupied by a real system. Thissuggests that behavior-based interference models should consider predator search pattern if they are to accurately predict thestrength of the interference.  相似文献

Abstract. I. An investigation of the effects of position of food in the gut (gut state), time since feeding, meal size and environmental temperature on the detection of prey using the electrophoretic separation of proteins with esterase activity was undertaken. The waterbug Notonecta glauca Linn (Hemiptera/Heteroptera) was used as the model predator.
2. Seven easily recognizable gut states can be identified at different times since commencement of a meal.
3. Specific prey esterase 'fingerprint' bands can be detected whilst food remains in the foregut.
4. Meal size and environmental temperature (affecting digestion and assimilation rates) both affect the rate of filling and emptying of the foregut, and hence the time period over which prey proteins can be detected by electrophoresis following a meal. Small meals and high temperatures lead to quite rapid changes in gut state with time and thus reduce the time period over which prey can be identified from gut contents (20 h). Large meals and low temperatures extend this period (48 h).
5. Predator gut state is the most important parameter in prey detectability from gut contents, and from a visual examination of the gut state it is immediately evident whether or not prey detection by electrophoresis will be possible.
6. There is further evidence in support of a twocompartment food processing model for Nofoonecru , and the significance of this type of processing in relation to gut content analysis of sucking predators is discussed.  相似文献

Interest in the evolution and maintenance of personality is burgeoning. Individuals of diverse animal species differ in their aggressiveness, fearfulness, sociability and activity. Strong trade-offs, mutation-selection balance, spatio-temporal fluctuations in selection, frequency dependence and good-genes mate choice are invoked to explain heritable personality variation, yet for continuous behavioural traits, it remains unclear which selective force is likely to maintain distinct polymorphisms. Using a model of trust and cooperation, we show how allowing individuals to monitor each other's cooperative tendencies, at a cost, can select for heritable polymorphisms in trustworthiness. This variation, in turn, favours costly 'social awareness' in some individuals. Feedback of this sort can explain the individual differences in trust and trustworthiness so often documented by economists in experimental public goods games across a range of cultures. Our work adds to growing evidence that evolutionary game theorists can no longer afford to ignore the importance of real world inter-individual variation in their models.  相似文献

Predation is a dominant structuring force in ecosystems, but its effects are almost always measured in the ecosystem of the predator. However, the effects of predators can potentially extend across ecosystem boundaries during ontogenetic niche shifts in prey. We compared the effects of fish predation on benthic versus emerging aquatic insects, and hypothesized that the relative effects of fish on these two stages of prey are mediated by fish foraging strategy (benthic versus water‐column feeders). Benthic‐feeding smallmouth buffalo reduced benthic insect biomass in the freshwater ecosystem by 89%, and reduced insect emergence to the terrestrial ecosystem by 65%. In contrast, water‐column feeding sunfish had no effect on benthic biomass in the freshwater ecosystem, but reduced emergence to the terrestrial ecosystem by 44% relative to the fishless control. When smallmouth and sunfish were combined in a substitutive design that kept total fish density the same as the single species treatments, their effects on benthic insects (50% reduction) were weaker than expected based on predictions from the single species treatments. In contrast, their combined effects on emergence (46% reduction) were additive. Tetragnathid spider densities increased during peak emergence, but did not respond to changes in emergence among treatments. These results demonstrate that the effects of fish on prey flux to the terrestrial ecosystem are not the same as their effects on benthic prey biomass in the aquatic ecosystem, and that this difference is likely mediated by foraging strategy.  相似文献

Copying others appears to be a cost-effective way of obtaining adaptive information, particularly when flexibly employed. However, adult humans differ considerably in their propensity to use information from others, even when this ‘social information’ is beneficial, raising the possibility that stable individual differences constrain flexibility in social information use. We used two dissimilar decision-making computer games to investigate whether individuals flexibly adjusted their use of social information to current conditions or whether they valued social information similarly in both games. Participants also completed established personality questionnaires. We found that participants demonstrated considerable flexibility, adjusting social information use to current conditions. In particular, individuals employed a ‘copy-when-uncertain’ social learning strategy, supporting a core, but untested, assumption of influential theoretical models of cultural transmission. Moreover, participants adjusted the amount invested in their decision based on the perceived reliability of personally gathered information combined with the available social information. However, despite this strategic flexibility, participants also exhibited consistent individual differences in their propensities to use and value social information. Moreover, individuals who favoured social information self-reported as more collectivist than others. We discuss the implications of our results for social information use and cultural transmission.  相似文献

For clinical application of tissue engineering strategies, the use of animal-derived serum in culture medium is not recommended, because it can evoke immune responses in patients. We previously observed that human platelet-lysate (PL) is favourable for cell expansion, but generates weaker tissue as compared to culture in foetal bovine serum (FBS). We investigated if human serum (HS) is a better human supplement to increase tissue strength. Cells were isolated from venous grafts of 10 patients and expanded in media supplemented with PL or HS, to determine proliferation rates and expression of genes related to collagen production and maturation. Zymography was used to assess protease expression. Collagen contraction assays were used as a two-dimensional (2D) model for matrix contraction. As a prove of principle, 3D tissue culture and tensile testing was performed for two patients, to determine tissue strength. Cell proliferation was lower in HS-supplemented medium than in PL medium. The HS cells produced less active matrix metallo-proteinase 2 (MMP2) and showed increased matrix contraction as indicated by gel contraction assays and 3D-tissue culture. Tensile testing showed increased strength for tissues cultured in HS when compared to PL. This effect was more pronounced if cells were sequentially cultured in PL, followed by tissue culture in HS. These data suggest that sequential use of PL and HS as substitutes for FBS in culture medium for cardiovascular tissue engineering results in improved cell proliferation and tissue mechanical properties, as compared to use of PL or HS apart.  相似文献

Effects of prey quality on social wasps when given a choice of prey   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of prey quality on foraging behavior and colony demographics of the social wasp Polistes fuscatus was examined by providing a choice between non‐toxic prey (Manduca sexta caterpillars) and sublethally toxic prey (Junonia coenia caterpillars), and then comparing the performance of these colonies to others given only the non‐toxic prey. In the choice, one of two types of Manduca were used: those fed an artificial diet or those fed plantain (Plantago lanceolata), which contains iridoid glycosides (IGs) that Junonia coenia store but which Manduca does not. Despite the negative correlation between the number of Junonia prey used and number of adult offspring produced, when a surplus of non‐toxic prey was available, the wasps did not completely avoid the toxic prey. However, they were more discriminating when the choice was between Manduca fed an artificial diet and Junonia fed plantain vs. when both prey species had eaten the plantain. Because the wasps had a choice of prey types and had a surplus of prey on about one‐third of the days, the wasps were able to take enough non‐toxic prey to avoid some of the negative consequences of IGs. For example, the total number of wasp offspring per nest was not affected, but mean weight of female offspring per colony was less for colonies given both prey types eating plantain, compared to that for colonies fed only non‐toxic prey, or those given a choice of non‐toxic prey vs. toxic prey. In addition, compared to the control (only non‐toxic prey), the proportion of males produced was less in the treatment that provided a clear contrast between non‐toxic and toxic prey. Why these wasps did not avoid the toxic prey is discussed.  相似文献

Numerous studies have found that predators can suppress prey densities and thereby impact important ecosystem processes such as plant productivity and decomposition. However, prey suppression by spiders can be highly variable. Unlike predators that feed on prey within a single energy channel, spiders often consume prey from asynchronous energy channels, such as grazing (live plant) and epigeic (soil surface) channels. Spiders undergo few life cycle changes and thus appear to be ideally suited to link energy channels, but ontogenetic diet shifts in spiders have received little attention. For example, spider use of different food channels may be highly specialized in different life stages and thus a species may be a multichannel omnivore only when we consider all life stages. Using stable isotopes, we investigated whether wolf spider (Pardosa littoralis, henceforth Pardosa) prey consumption is driven by changes in spider size. Small spiders obtained > 80% of their prey from the epigeic channel, whereas larger spiders used grazing and epigeic prey almost equally. Changes in prey consumption were not driven by changes in prey density, but by changes in prey use by different spider size classes. Thus, because the population size structure of Pardosa changes dramatically over the growing season, changes in spider size may have important implications for the strength of trophic cascades. Our research demonstrates that life history can be an important component of predator diet, which may in turn affect community- and ecosystem-level processes.  相似文献
