Comparative cultivation experiments were made with 14 populations of the annual, hemiparasitic speciesRhinanthus glacialis from seven different habitat types. Phenological data were recorded and plants from field samples and from corresponding experimental samples were morphologically analysed.There are up to ten weeks difference in the start of flowering between means of the extreme experimental populations. Flowering time variation correlates with the number of internodes and also with most of the other morphological characters. Flowering time also shows close relationships to different grassland types and the examined populations appear to be well-adapted to the environmental conditions in natural or man-influenced grassland types as far as flowering time is concerned. The number of internodes is mostly insensitive to the applied experimental influences. The rate of internode production is constant. Trade-offs are suggested for some morphological traits (i.e., few internodes with few branches and thus few flowers as trade-off for early flowering). — Previous studies of life history variation based on population data have not been incorporated into the theory of heterochrony. The pattern of life history variation of populations ofR. glacialis together with information about morphology, ecology, and phylogeny suggests that some variants have evolved from ancestors via heterochronic processes. Earlier flowering populations from montane hay meadows, litter meadows, and dry meadows belong to paedomorphic variants. These have fewer internodes and branches as well as reduced height in comparison with the suggested ancestor. Later flowering populations from subalpine limestone grassland belong to a peramorphic variant with more internodes, more branches, and taller stems in comparison with the suggested ancestor.  相似文献

Two grasshopper subspecies, Chorthippus parallelus parallelus (Cpp) and Chorthippus parallelus erythropus (Cpe), meet along the Pyrenees where they hybridize and produce a hybrid zone. A contact zone located in the Col de Portalet has been analyzed for the distribution of chromosome markers on the sex (X) chromosome in pure and hybrid populations. C-banding allowed us to distinguish both pure subspecific forms and recombinant forms, and to demonstrate their different frequencies through the contact zone. Interestingly, the distal C-band (P) on the X chromosome that characterizes Cpp individuals occurs at very high frequency through the zone and then drops sharply, close to where pure Cpe populations are found. A novel interstitial C-band (H) has been found, probably derived from that characterizing Cpe individuals (E). This marker band is only present in hybrid populations. These data are discussed in the light of the dynamics of the hybrid zone.  相似文献

The shortage of rhesus macaques of Indian origin for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) research has prompted a search for an alternate species. As rhesus macaques of Chinese origin are more readily obtainable, we have defined the parameters of infection in seven members of this subspecies with the primary virulent isolate, SIV/delta B670. Viremic peaks and set points as determined by real time polymerase chain reaction were, in general, lower than that observed in Indian origin rhesus macaques. As expected, these values were associated with maintenance of CD4+ lymphocytes and significantly longer survival, with six of seven Chinese origin animals living significantly longer than Indian origin rhesus macaques. Interestingly, these findings were associated with a selective amplification of one of two major phylogenetic groups found within the inoculum. This observation is in contrast to Indian origin animals where both phylogenetic groups are commonly identified. Together, these data suggest prudence in the design of experimental protocols using rhesus macaques of Chinese origin where survival and rapid loss of CD4+ lymphocytes are desired endpoints.  相似文献

Dactylis glomerata L. is one of the best known examples of a polyploid complex that includes diploid (2n = 14), tetraploid (2n = 28) and hexaploid (2n = 42) types. The diploids, descending from the ancestors of the genus, are numerous, distinct forms adapted to specific environments and include all the morphological variation and ecological adaptation found in Dactylis. The objective of the present study was to shed more light on the differentiation of diploids and to obtain information for better exploiting the genetic resources of this species. To this end we carried out a discriminant analysis in the most widespread diploid subspecies based on a large number of morpho-physiological traits. We found that some characteristics, such as time to heading, time to flowering, vegetative regrowth, plant height and seed shattering are the most discriminant and enabled us to realize a more exact differentiation of the diploids with respect to the morphological criterion generally adopted. The results demonstrated that diploid taxa offer an interesting combination of relevant agronomical and ecological characteristics which could be useful in breeding programs to promote the use of this species in sustainable agriculture systems. We also performed cytological investigations and defined a general karyotype representative of the diploid Dactylis considered in this study.  相似文献

Woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV) infection is known to be endemic in areas of the mid-Atlantic states but is apparently absent from populations in New York and much of New England. Blood samples of 40 woodchucks (Marmota monax) from New York and from Delaware were examined by starch gel electrophoresis, and 18 monomorphic and six polymorphic protein-coding genetic systems were identified. Mendelian inheritance of variants of the six polymorphic systems was confirmed in 52 laboratory offspring of the original samples. Average heterozygosity of 0.066 in New York woodchucks and 0.039 in Delaware woodchucks were high values for mammals, although similar to those of other sciurids. Significant heterogeneity between samples from New York and Delaware woodchucks was observed at two loci (peptidase with glycyl leucine-4 and phosphogluconate dehydrogenase), suggesting that these populations were genetically distinct. Whether there are genetically determined differences in response to WHV infection remains to be determined experimentally.  相似文献

Anurans hold a unique position in vertebrate phylogeny, as they made the major transition from water to land. Through evolution they have acquired fundamental mechanisms to adapt to terrestrial gravity. Such mechanisms are now shared among other terrestrial vertebrates derived from ancestral amphibians. Space research, using amphibians as a model animal, is significant based on the following aspects: (1) Anuran amphibians show drastic changes in their living niche during their metamorphosis. Environments for tadpoles and for terrestrial life of frogs are quite different in terms of gravity and its associated factors. (2) Certain tadpoles, such as Rhacophorus viridis amamiensis, have a transparent abdominal wall. Thus visceral organs and their motion can be observed in these animals in non-invasive manner through their transparent abdominal skin. This feature enables biologists to evaluate the physiological state of these amphibians and study the autonomic control of visceral organs. It is also feasible for space biologists to examine how such autonomic regulation could be altered by microgravity and exposure to the space environment.  相似文献

Three strains of Xenorhabdus nematophilus (A24, F1, NC116) and strain Dan of Xenorhabdus bovienii were tested to evaluate whether the phase variation observed in these bacteria was in any way connected with plasmids. The plasmid patterns of both phases of A24 and F1 strains were the same, whereas the two NC116 phases had only one band each. No difference was observed between the undigested or digested plasmid patterns of the two phases from the three strains. No plasmid was detected in either phase of strain Dan. The plasmid probes were prepared from the six bands of A24 phase 1. By hybridization studies, three plasmids in two forms (open circular and supercoiled) were detected in the strain A24. Two were estimated at 12 kb, and the smallest was about 4 kb. Attempts to hybridize plasmid probes with either undigested or digested chromosomal DNA of the two phases of strain A24 were unsuccessful. The results suggest that neither a difference in plasmid content nor a plasmid recombination with the chromosome is involved in phase variation. The hybridizations revealed homologous DNA sequences among the three plasmids of strain A24 and among the plasmids of strains such as A24 and NC116, which were isolated from geographically distant countries, suggesting that plasmids may encode similar proteins.  相似文献

The effect of five different food concentrations on the life history of Ceriodaphnia cf. dubia was examined by following cohorts of 25 individuals from <24 hours until the death of all individuals. The food concentrations used in the study were chosen to reflect densities found in lentic freshwater systems and those commonly used in toxicity testing, and ranged from 1 × 104 cells mL-1 to 15 × 104 cells mL-1. Food concentration was found to have a significant effect (p<0.05) on several life history parameters, with a decrease in food concentration leading to a decrease in brood sizes and population growth rate, and an increase in longevity. Population growth rates varied from approximately 0.39 neonates d-1 to 0.54 neonates d-1, while mean lifespan ranged from 16.7 days to 42.9 days. A decrease in food concentration also led to an increase in the mean generation time.  相似文献

Abstract Immune defense may vary as a result of trade-offs with other life-history traits or in parallel with variation in antigen levels in the environment. We studied lark species (Alaudidae) in the Arabian Desert and temperate Netherlands to test opposing predictions from these two hypotheses. Based on their slower pace of life, the trade-off hypothesis predicts relatively stronger immune defenses in desert larks compared with temperate larks. However, as predicted by the antigen exposure hypothesis, reduced microbial abundances in deserts should result in desert-living larks having relatively weaker immune defenses. We quantified host-independent and host-dependent microbial abundances of culturable microbes in ambient air and from the surfaces of birds. We measured components of immunity by quantifying concentrations of the acute-phase protein haptoglobin, natural antibody-mediated agglutination titers, complement-mediated lysis titers, and the microbicidal ability of whole blood. Desert-living larks were exposed to significantly lower concentrations of airborne microbes than temperate larks, and densities of some bird-associated microbes were also lower in desert species. Haptoglobin concentrations and lysis titers were also significantly lower in desert-living larks, but other immune indexes did not differ. Thus, contrary to the trade-off hypothesis, we found little evidence that a slow pace of life predicted increased immunological investment. In contrast, and in support of the antigen exposure hypothesis, associations between microbial exposure and some immune indexes were apparent. Measures of antigen exposure, including assessment of host-independent and host-dependent microbial assemblages, can provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying immunological variation.  相似文献

Patterns of variation were studied at 20 isozyme loci in 49 coastal, low-elevation Douglas-fir populations in SW British Columbia and NW Washington State. Several components of variation were estimated for each population including the number of alleles per locus N a, number of alleles per polymorphic locus N a(95), inbreeding F, heterozygosity H, and population divergence D. F was near zero indicating nearly complete outcrossing within populations. H was quite high (16%) and in aecord with previous studies of Douglas-fir. D values were low (equivalent to Wrights F ST of 0.08) indicating levels of gene flow sufficient to largely homogenize populations. The parameters of diversity N a, N a(95), H, and D showed little intercorrelation across populations. A homogenous pattern of genetic relationship among populations was shown by the clustering of populations based on their inferred relationship, and by the principal components of the matrix of inferred genetic relationship. Because of the complex nature of gene diversity and the continuous nature of population differentiation in Douglas-fir, it is difficult with isozyme markers to identify specific populations of value for genetic conservation in this species.This paper is dedicated to J.C. Background  

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of most animals evolves more rapidly than nuclear DNA, and often shows higher levels of intraspecific polymorphism and population subdivision. The mtDNA of anthozoans (corals, sea fans, and their kin), by contrast, appears to evolve slowly. Slow mtDNA evolution has been reported for several anthozoans, however this slow pace has been difficult to put in phylogenetic context without parallel surveys of nuclear variation or calibrated rates of synonymous substitution that could permit quantitative rate comparisons across taxa. Here, I survey variation in the coding region of a mitochondrial gene from a coral species (Balanophyllia elegans) known to possess high levels of nuclear gene variation, and estimate synonymous rates of mtDNA substitution by comparison to another coral (Tubastrea coccinea).  相似文献

1. We investigated whether Daphnia galeata × hyalina hybrids of Lake Constance and Lake Greifensee show the same pattern of life history parameters as previously reported for D. galeata × cucullata hybrids and whether such a pattern is consistent between Daphnia populations from those two lakes. 2. Hybrids in Lake Constance were intermediate in size compared with the parental species. Hybrids in Lake Greifensee were smaller than D. galeata. The intrinsic growth rate (r) of hybrids from Lake Constance was not significantly different from the faster growing parental taxon D. galeata. However, r of hybrids from Lake Greifensee was significantly lower than that of D. galeata. 3. The observed juvenile body length differences between the taxa varied with the clutch number. The first clutch juvenile lengths of the three taxa did not differ for Lake Constance. First clutch juveniles of Lake Greifensee D. galeata were smaller than hybrid first clutch juveniles. The third clutch juvenile length did not differ between taxa from Lake Greifensee, but D. galeata juveniles from Lake Constance were bigger than those of D. hyalina. 4. The life history pattern found in Lake Constance corresponds to previous findings from other studies. The hybrids in this lake combine the faster population growth of one parental species with a relatively small size. In the case of Lake Greifensee hybrids, the relatively large size of first clutch juveniles and the small size of the adults could be interpreted as dual adaptations to invertebrate and fish predation. We speculate that the lower population growth rate of the hybrids is a trade‐off for this twofold protection.  相似文献

Successful recovery and sustainability of threatened and exploited species depends in part on retention and maintenance of genetic diversity. Theory indicates that genetic diversity is lost at a rate inversely proportional to the genetically effective population size (N(e)), which is roughly equal to one-half the adult census size (N) in many organisms. However, N(e) has been reported to be up to five orders of magnitude lower than N in species with life histories that result in type III survivorship (high fecundity, but heavy mortality in early life stages, e.g. bony fishes), prompting speculation that low values of N(e) may be a general feature of such organisms despite sometimes vast abundances. Here, we compared N(e) and the ratio N(e)/N across three ecologically similar fish species from the arid southwestern United States, all with type III life histories but with differing expectations of egg and larval survivorship that correlate with the degree of human-imposed habitat fragmentation. Our study indicates that type III life history may be necessary, but this alone is insufficient to account for extraordinarily low values of N(e)/N. Rather, life history interacts with environmentally imposed mortality to determine the rate and magnitude of change in genetic diversity in these desert fish species.  相似文献

The single species of Aepyceros, Aepyceros melampus (impala), is native to central and southern Africa, from Uganda to South Africa. It inhabits open woodlands, sandy bush country and acacia savannah. This study tested the morphological and geographical variation among specimens of impala and their possible relation with described subspecies. Nineteen skull and horn measurements were taken. A multivariate analysis was used and size and shape were explored. Facial coat patterns were also coded. The results supported four out of five traditionally described subspecies: Aepyceros melampus petersi from Angola/Namibia, Aepyceros melampus melampus from South Africa, Aepyceros melampus suara from East Africa and Aepyceros melampus johnstoni from Zambia and Malawi. We consider Aepyceros melampus rendilis to be a synonym of suara . A revised synopsis is suggested, with comments on the geographical ranges of the subspecies. Skull dimensions also allowed us to estimate the geographical origin and subspecies of some individuals of unknown provenance. Coat patterns showed no clear relation with subspecies or geographic location, with the exception of A. m. petersi .  相似文献

A strain selection procedure using Gracilaria verrucosa gametophytic sporelings was found to be an efficient tool for the improvement of Gracilaria strains. Two strains, C-2 and A-18, which were isolated and grown clonally, showed higher growth rates under high and low temperature conditions, respectively, than the local Gracilaria conferta. Growth rate, photosynthesis and chlorophyll, which were measured under different temperature and photon flux densities, demonstrated an overall advantage of the selected strains over the wild type strains of both G. verrucosa and G. conferta. Growth rates were also generally in positive correlation with the carboxylase activity of Rubisco. The G. verrucosa wild type also had a 40% higher agar content than G. conferta. The selected strains thus showed higher potential for outdoor cultivation than local wild type populations.  相似文献

The consequences of warming for Antarctic long‐lived organisms depend on their ability to survive changing patterns of climate and environmental variation. Among birds and mammals of different Antarctic regions, including emperor penguins, snow petrels, southern fulmars, Antarctic fur seals and Weddell seals, we found strong support for selection of life history traits that reduce interannual variation in fitness. These species maximize fitness by keeping a low interannual variance in the survival of adults and in their propensity to breed annually, which are the vital rates that influence most the variability in population growth rate (λ). All these species have been able to buffer these rates against the effects of recent climate‐driven habitat changes except for Antarctic fur seals, in the Southwest Atlantic. In this region of the Southern Ocean, the rapid increase in ecosystem fluctuation, associated with increasing climate variability observed since 1990, has limited and rendered less predictable the main fur seal food supply, Antarctic krill. This has increased the fitness costs of breeding for females, causing significant short‐term changes in population structure through mortality and low breeding output. Changes occur now with a frequency higher than the mean female fur seal generation time, and therefore are likely to limit their adaptive response. Fur seals are more likely to rely on phenotypic plasticity to cope with short‐term changes in order to maximize individual fitness. With more frequent extreme climatic events driving more frequent ecosystem fluctuation, the repercussions for life histories in many Antarctic birds and mammals are likely to increase, particularly at regional scales. In species with less flexible life histories that are more constrained by fluctuation in their critical habitats, like sea‐ice, this may cause demographic changes, population compensation and changes in distribution, as already observed in penguin species living in the Antarctic Peninsula and adjacent islands.  相似文献

Prevalence and abundance of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. infections were studied over the 8-year period in 3 species of rodents in N.E. Poland (bank vole Myodes glareolus-1523; yellow-necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis- 638; common vole Microtus arvalis- 419). Prevalence was 53.8, 28.1 and 62.3% respectively for Cryptosporidium spp. and 58.3, 24.4 and 74.2% respectively for Giardia spp. Prevalence and abundance of infection varied markedly across 8 years of the study with 1998 and 2002 being years of higher prevalence and abundance, following changes in the densities of host species. The distribution of intestinal protozoa in forest rodents did not vary in the 3 isolated sites during the 4-year study. In the case of Cryptosporidium, fewer older animals carried infection and infections of the oldest bank and common voles were relatively milder. In the case of Giardia in yellow-necked mice, infections were more common in older age classes (2 and 3). The two species showed significant co-occurrence and in animals carrying both species there was a strong significant positive correlation between abundance of infection with each. These data are discussed in relation to the parasite genotypes identified in this region and in respect of the role of various ecological factors in shaping of intestinal protozoa communities.  相似文献

We combined the concept of mechanisms of co-existence with the approach of giving-up densities to study inter-taxon competition between seed-eating birds and mammals. We measured feeding behaviour in food patches to define and study the guild of seed-eating vertebrates occupying sandy habitats at Bir Asluj, Negev Desert, Israel. Despite a large number of putatively granivorous rodents and birds at the site, two gerbil species (Allenbys gerbil, Gerbillus allenbyi, and the greater Egyptian gerbil, G. pyramidum) dominated nocturnal foraging, and a single bird species (crested lark, Galerida cristata) contributed all of the daytime foraging. We used giving-up densities to quantify foraging behaviour and foraging efficiencies. A low giving-up density demonstrates the ability of a forager to profitably harvest food at low abundances and to profitably utilize the foraging opportunities left behind by the less efficient forager. Gerbils had lower giving-up densities in the bush than open microhabitat, and lower giving-up densities in the semi-stabilized than stabilized sand habitats. Crested larks showed the opposite: lower giving-up densities in the open than bush, and on the stabilized than semi-stabilized sand habitats. Despite these patterns, gerbils had substantially lower giving-up densities than crested larks in both microhabitats, all sand habitats, and during each month. Several mechanisms may permit the crested lark to co-exist with the gerbils. Larks may be cream skimmers on the high spatial and temporal variability in seed abundances. Larks may rely on insects, fruit or smaller seeds. Or, larks may rely on adjacent rocky habitats.  相似文献
