Babesiosis is a worldwide emerging tick-borne disease that is increasing in frequency and geographic range. It imposes a significant health burden, especially on those who are immunocompromised and those who acquire the infection through blood transfusion. Death from babesiosis occurs in up to 20 percent of these groups. Diagnosis is confirmed with identification of typical intraerythrocytic parasites on a thin blood smear or Babesia DNA using PCR. Treatment consists of atovaquone and azithromycin or clindamycin and quinine, and exchange transfusion in severe cases. Personal and communal protective measures can limit the burden of infection but it is important to recognize that none of these measures are likely to prevent the continued expansion of Babesia into non-endemic areas. 相似文献

To compare the infectivity of tick-transmitted Babesia microti for natural and experimental hosts, we permitted parasitized nymphal Ixodes dammini to feed on white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and hamsters. About nine-tenths of infested mice developed patent infection, but only about one-half of the hamsters become parasitemic. Tick-bitten mice become parasitemic more rapidly, but parasites became more abundant in hamsters than in mice. More than 100,000 B. microti were present in the salivary glands of nymphal ticks that remained attached to rodents for 60 hr. These parasites were collected, diluted, and inoculated into mice and hamsters. The mean infectious dose for both experimental hosts was in the range of 10,000 to 25,000 salivarian parasites. Compared to experimental hosts, natural hosts were more susceptible to tick-transmitted infection, became parasitemic more rapidly, but developed less intense parasitemias. Paradoxically, natural and experimental hosts were similarly susceptible to measured inocula of salivarian parasites. 相似文献

India is predominantly an agricultural country with about 70% of her population dependent on income from agriculture. Although India accounts for a significant share of world’s livestock resources, livestock production is greatly affected by ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs). Therefore, India represents a particularly interesting scenario for the study of TTBDs. Herein, we review the problems and opportunities for the integrated control of ticks of ruminants with special emphasis on livestock farming systems in India. Developments discussed in the review in the area of tick vaccines and other tick control measures should have an impact on the future of Indian livestock production. 相似文献

We have developed an oligonucleotide-chip based assay for detection of 16S ribosomal PCR products from tick-borne bacteria. This chip contains 14 specific probes, which target variable regions of 16S rDNA of tick-borne bacteria including Borrellia spp., Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma spp., Coxiella burnetii and Francisella tularensis. The specificity of these probes was tested by hybridization of the chip with fluorescently labeled PCR products amplified from the genomic DNA of selected tick-borne bacteria. The assay was also tested for detection of tick-borne bacteria in single ticks. 相似文献

The results of a 2-year survey on ticks infesting livestock on farms in Western Sicily, Italy, are reported. Several dogs living in the same area were also examined for ticks. Moreover, free-living ticks from one cattle farm were caught by CO2 traps and flagging. A total of 6208 specimens was collected belonging to 9 species: Rhipicephalus bursa (32.4%), Rhipicephalus turanicus (22.7%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (19.3%), Hyalomma lusitanicum (12.0%), Haemaphysalis punctata (7.8%), Hyalomma marginatum (3.5%), Dermacentor marginatus (1.4%), Ixodes ricinus (0.8%) and Ixodes hexagonus (0.1%). The species belonging to the genus Rhipicephalus were present on all hosts and habitats monitored, R. bursa was found to be abundant on cattle (46.3%) and sheep (62.0%), R. sanguineus was prevalent on dogs (50.4%), and R. turanicus on donkeys (41.0%) and as free-living species (48.5%). 相似文献

The prevalence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi was determined in equid blood samples in five provinces of the Black Sea region of Turkey by using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Of 153 samples, 53 (34.6%) and 33 (21.5%) were seropositive to B. caballi and T. equi, respectively. In addition, 8 (5.2%) of samples were seropositive to both T. equi and B. caballi. Anti T. equi and B. caballi antibodies were detected in all five regions. The prevalence of B. caballi was higher than T. equi in all counties. Antibodies to T. equi and B. caballi were detected in horses of all ages, and there were no significant differences among age groups. Out of 84 horses, 32 (38.0%) were positive for B. caballi infection and 20 (23.8%) were positive for T. equi infection. Five horses (5.6%) were found to be seropositive to both B. caballi and T. equi. Of 38 donkeys, 14 (36.8%) were found to be positive for B. caballi infection and 5 (13.1%) positive for T. equi infection. In addition, 2 (5.2%) samples were seropositive for both T. equi and B. caballi infections. Out of 31 mules, 8 (25.8%) were positive for B. caballi infection and 8 (25 8%) positive for T. equi infection. One (3.2%) sample was seropositive for both T. equi and B. caballi infections. Of all the animals in this study, only 3 horses were infected by Rhipicephalus turanicus and Hyalomma detritum, and no haemoparasites were detected by microscopic examination. 相似文献

Babesiosis is a potentially fatal tick-borne zoonotic disease caused by a species complex of blood parasites that can infect a variety of vertebrates, particularly dogs, cattle, and humans. In the United States, human babesiosis is caused by two distinct parasites, Babesia microti and Babesia duncani. The enzootic cycle of B. microti, endemic in the northeastern and upper midwestern regions, has been well characterised. In the western United States, however, the natural reservoir host and tick vector have not been identified for B. duncani, greatly impeding efforts to understand and manage this zoonotic disease. Two and a half decades after B. duncani was first described in a human patient in Washington State, USA, we provide evidence that the enzootic tick vector is the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, and the reservoir host is likely the mule deer, Odocoileus hemionus. The broad, overlapping ranges of these two species covers a large portion of far-western North America, and is consistent with confirmed cases of B. duncani in the far-western United States. 相似文献

The effects of the 2 ornithine decarboxylase inhibitors α-difluoromethylomithine (DFMO) and α-monofluoromethyl-dehydroormithine methyl ester (ΔMFMO-ME) on growth of Babesia bovis blood stages in vitro were tested. The DFMO had no apparent effects on in vitro growth of B. bovis nor on the morphology of the parasite at concentrations up to 20 mM. In contrast, ΔMFMO-ME had cytotoxic effects on B. bovis at 0.5 mM which were more pronounced at 5 mM. ΔMFMO-ME caused both a decrease in percentage parasitized erythrocytes and a degeneration of parasites after 12 h exposure, and the magnitude of both effects was dose-dependent. The effects of ΔMFMO-ME were not reversible for B. bovis precultured for 12 h (5 mM) or 24 h (0.5 mM) in drug before culturing the parasite in drug-free medium. Unexpectedly, 300 μM putrescine did not reverse the effects of ΔMFMO-ME on B. bovis blood stage, raising the possibility that inhibition of omithine decarboxylase is not responsible for these effects. 相似文献

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) remain to be a global animal health threat. Developing countries like the Philippines is not exempt to this. Despite the potential impact TBDs can give to these countries, local government initiatives and researches remain to be limited. In the Philippines, most epidemiological studies were confined only to specific areas, and predominantly in the Northern Area. Due to its unique geography and limited studies, the current nationwide status of most TBDs could not be clearly established. This review mainly covered published studies and presented challenges in the conduct of TBD research in the Philippines, which may be similar to other Southeast Asian or developing countries. To date, reported livestock TBD pathogens in the Philippines include Anaplasma, Babesia, Theileria, and Mycoplasma spp. With the ubiquitous presence of the Rhipicephalus microplus ticks in the country, it is highly probable that other pathogens transmitted by these vectors could be present. Despite studies on different TBDs in the livestock sector, the Philippine government has not yet heightened its efforts to implement tick control measures as part of the routine animal health program for local farmers. Further studies might be needed to determine the nationwide prevalence of TBDs and the presence of other possible tick species and TBD pathogens. The Philippine scenario may present situations that are similar to other developing countries. 相似文献

We have taken into account the possibility of identifying the cause of the selection of Rh negative individuals during the Paleolithic period, referring to the known data on Rh positive and Rh negative phenotype and the pathogenic agents inside the red blood cells. After having narrowed down the field, identifying the Babesia divergens as the most probable responsible agent for the selection of the Rh negative individuals, we discuss the epidemiologic mechanism which may have intervened, and we evaluate the likelihood of this hypothesis in relation to the available data. We conclude that the following sequence is possible: Babesia divergens, Ixodes ricinus, Ursus spelaeus and/or arctus, caves, Rh negative selection. This would appear to be confirmed by the coinciding of the distribution areas of Rh negative individuals, Ursus spelaeus and arctus, Ixodes ricinus and Babesia divergens. We have also mentioned the possibility that the extinction of Neanderthal Man had the same cause as the selection of the Rh negative individuals. 相似文献

Ticks are important vectors for the transmission of pathogens including viruses. The viruses carried by ticks also known as tick-borne viruses (TBVs), contain a large group of viruses with diverse genetic properties and are concluded in two orders, nine families, and at least 12 genera. Some members of the TBVs are notorious agents causing severe diseases with high mortality rates in humans and livestock, while some others may pose risks to public health that are still unclear to us. Herein, we review the current knowledge of TBVs with emphases on the history of virus isolation and identification, tick vectors, and potential pathogenicity to humans and animals, including assigned species as well as the recently discovered and unassigned species. All these will promote our understanding of the diversity of TBVs, and will facilitate the further investigation of TBVs in association with both ticks and vertebrate hosts. 相似文献

A wide variety of pathogens is transmitted from ticks to vertebrates including viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths, of which most have a life cycle that requires passage through the vertebrate host. Tick-borne infections of humans, farm and companion animals are essentially associated with wildlife animal reservoirs. While some flying insect-borne diseases of humans such as malaria, filariasis and Kala Azar caused by Leishmania donovani target people as their main host, major tick-borne infections of humans, although potentially causing disease in large numbers of individuals, are typically an infringement of a circulation between wildlife animal reservoirs and tick vectors. While new tick-borne infectious agents are frequently recognised, emerging agents of human tick-borne infections were probably circulating among wildlife animal and tick populations long before being recognised as clinical causes of human disease as has been shown for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Co-infection with more than one tick-borne infection is common and can enhance pathogenic processes and augment disease severity as found in B. burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum co-infection. The role of wild animal reservoirs in co-infection of human hosts appears to be central, further linking human and animal tick-borne infections. Although transmission of most tick-borne infections is through the tick saliva, additional routes of transmission, shown mostly in animals, include infection by oral uptake of infected ticks, by carnivorism, animal bites and transplacentally. Additionally, artificial infection via blood transfusion is a growing threat in both human and veterinary medicine. Due to the close association between human and animal tick-borne infections, control programs for these diseases require integration of data from veterinary and human reporting systems, surveillance in wildlife and tick populations, and combined teams of experts from several scientific disciplines such as entomology, epidemiology, medicine, public health and veterinary medicine. 相似文献

Recent increases in reported outbreaks of tick-borne diseases have led to increased interest in understanding and controlling
epidemics involving these transmission vectors. Mathematical disease models typically assume constant population size and
spatial homogeneity. For tick-borne diseases, these assumptions are not always valid. The disease model presented here incorporates
non-constant population sizes and spatial heterogeneity utilizing a system of differential equations that may be applied to
a variety of spatial patches. We present analytical results for the one patch version and find parameter restrictions under
which the populations and infected densities reach equilibrium. We then numerically explore disease dynamics when parameters
are allowed to vary spatially and temporally and consider the effectiveness of various tick-control strategies. 相似文献

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is reciprocally transmitted between Ixodes ricinus ticks and small mammals. Recently, transmission between co-feeding ticks has been postulated as an epidemiological by important
mechanism of perpetuating the agent. To empirically examine the question whether the “traditional” mode of transmission is
sufficient to maintain enzootic TBEV transmission, the basic reproductive number R0 of TBEV could be estimated under this model for sites in which TBEV is enzootic. I propose an empirical estimator of R0 for TBEV which is based on longitudinal stage–specific local tick infestation densities assessed by live trapping of small
mammals. A Gibbs sampler–based 95%–credibility interval is presented. When applied to published field data from TBEV enzootic
sites sub–critical R0 estimates are obtained for both sites. I discuss potential shortcomings of this method and possible implications of these
findings on the discussion of supplemental mechanisms of transmission.
