Progestogen pretreatment and introduction of rams were used to prepare 432 Rasa aragonesa ewes for synchronization of estrus with prostaglandin (PG) during anestrus. The experiment was a 3 x 3 x 2 factorial with lactation status, ram/progestogen treatment and treatment with pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG; 250 IU) at injection of PG as main effects. At ram introduction (Day 0), ewes were dry (Group 1), weaned (Group 2) or suckling a lamb (Group 3). They received either norgestomet implants for 12 d (Days -12 to Day 0 (Group A), ram introduction for 12 d (Days 0 to 12) (Group B) or both (Group C). Half the ewes received PMSG with PG (100 mug Cloprostenol) on Day 12. Pregnancy rate was higher at first service in dry (Group 1; 42%) than in recently-weaned ewes (Group 3; 24% and Group 2; 31%; P<0.01). Occurrence of estrus and conception and pregnancy rates to first service were higher (P<0.01) in ewes previously exposed to rams (Groups B and C) than in ewes treated only with progestogen (Group A). There were no effects of PMSG, no interactions among the three variables and no differences in prolificacy (1.12 at first service).  相似文献

Diurnal variation in the response of anoestrous ewes to the ram effect   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The re-introduction of rams after a period of separation was used to stimulate LH secretion and induce ovulation in seasonally anovulatory ewes maintained under natural photoperiod. In 2 experiments, the rams were introduced in the morning or the evening to test for diurnal variations in responsiveness to the treatment. In the first experiment, with Romanov ewes, the ram-induced increase in tonic LH secretion was significantly earlier in the ewes treated (N = 6) at 07:30 h (mean +/- s.e.m. delay to first pulse: 20 +/- 6 min) than in those (N = 5) treated at 19:30 h (66 +/- 15 min; P = 0.006). The pulse interval after the ram effect was significantly shorter in ewes that subsequently ovulated (120 +/- 10 min) than in ewes that did not ovulate (288 +/- 108 min; P = 0.043). There was a significant decline in pulse amplitude from 6.7 +/- 1.2 to 3.4 +/- 0.6 ng/ml (both groups combined) after the introduction of rams (P = 0.040). Of the 11 ewes, 7 subsequently ovulated and a preovulatory LH surge was observed in 6 of these 30-36 h after ram introduction. In the second experiment, with seasonally anoestrous Préalpes-du-Sud ewes, the effect of the timing of the introduction of rams on the periovulatory events was tested. The delay to the onsets of oestrus and the LH surge was not affected, but the ovulation rate was higher after ram introduction in the morning (1.42) than in the evening (1.14). In the 12-h period before the introduction of the rams in the first experiment, there was a difference between the groups in the secretion of LH, but the existence of diurnal rhythms in the concentrations of LH or FSH were not confirmed in a later study in which 7 ewes were sampled every 20 min for 36 h. In contrast, there was a distinct diurnal variation in the secretion of prolactin, with the highest values being recorded at night and the lowest around midday (P = 0.025). The rise and fall in prolactin values did not appear to coincide with dawn or dusk.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Serial blood sampling before and after exposing four anovular Corriedale ewes to a group of rams and estrous ewes during the non-breeding season revealed a pattern of LH secretion similar to that previously observed in Merinos. Mean LH values doubled (P<0.001) from 0.24+/-0.06 microgL(-1) (mean+/-s.e.m.) before to 0.55+/-0.05 microgL(-1) after 2h of visual, auditory, and odor exposure to rams and estrous ewes in an indoor facility. A non-significant (P<0.17) increase of LH pulses per hour was also observed (0.7+/-0.3 pulses per hour before compared with 1.3+/-0.3 during stimulation). All four ewes had recently formed corpora lutea by five days after stimulation. Results are consistent with the pattern of sudden increase and sustained release of LH observed in other sheep breeds, particularly the Merino.  相似文献

During the nonbreeding season, oocytes recovered from ovaries of FSH-primed or nonprimed ewes were matured in the presence or absence of granulosa cells collected from ovaries of primed or nonprimed ewes prior to in vitro fertilization with either fresh or frozen-thawed sperm. Following fertilization, ova were cultured for 24 h in synthetic oviduct fluid medium (SOF) supplemented with 20% human serum at 39 degrees C under humidified 5% CO(2), 5% O(2), 90% N(2) and then assessed for cleavage. Overall, 52% of ova cleaved. Cleavage was not affected by the source of sperm. Significantly more oocytes from primed follicles cleaved after 24 hours than those from nonprimed follicles (P<0.001). Maturation of oocytes in the presence of granulosa cells from nonprimed ewes resulted in a lower cleavage rate (44%, P<0.05) than in the presence of granulosa from primed ewes (59%) or no granulosa cells (50%). Oocytes (n = 508) from primed ewes were matured in the presence of granulosa cells (also from primed ewes) and fertilized in vitro with frozen-thawed sperm. Following in vitro culture for 24 hours, 68 of the 270 (53%) cleaved embryos were transferred to 17 recipient ewes, 15 of which remained pregnant to term, producing 24 lambs. The remaining 202 cleaved embryos were cultured for a further 5 days, of which 73 appeared to reach the morula/blastocyst stage and 61 were transferred to 16 recipients. Two ewes remained pregnant to term producing two lambs. These results demonstrate that production of sheep embryos using in vitro maturation and fertilization techniques is possible in the nonbreeding season. However, the poor viability of embryos obtained following extended culture needs to be resolved before such techniques can be usefully applied.  相似文献

A total of 4109 does of a local Greek breed (Capra prisca) were synchronized with intravaginal MPA-sponges and PMSG, and 24 bucks of Alpine (n = 8), Saanen (n = 8) and Damascus (n = 8) breeds were used for studying the fertility of nonfrozen and frozen-thawed semen during the nonbreeding season (June to August). Artificial insemination (AI) was performed once (50 to 55 h after sponge withdrawal) or twice (36 and 60 h after sponge withdrawals with fresh semen (collected during the nonbreeding season, stored at 16 degrees C and inseminated within 6 h) or frozen semen (prepared from the same bucks during the preceding breeding season). The induction of estrus was successful, varying between 91.0 and 95.0%. The form of semen (fresh or frozen-thawed used for inseminating the synchronized does affected their fertility: the overall kidding rate with fresh semen (65.5%) was higher (P < 0.05) than that with frozen-thawed semen (53.4%). The fertility level was also affected by the number of inseminations performed: the overall kidding rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the does inseminated twice with fresh or frozen-thawed semen (70.4 and 59. 1%, respectively) than in those inseminated only once (48.9 and 44.9%, respectively). Finally, the breed of the buck used for preparing the fresh or the frozen-thawed semen affected the fertility level of the does. The kidding rate was higher in does inseminated with fresh semen prepared from bucks of the Damascus breed than from bucks of Saanen or Alpine breed. However, when frozen-thawed semen was used the kidding rate was lower in does inseminated with semen prepared from bucks of the Damascus breed than from bucks of the Alpine or Saanen breed. It is concluded that the fresh semen of Alpine, Saanen and Damascus breed bucks, born and raised under the climate conditions prevailing in Greece (34 degrees to 41 degrees N), can be used successfully during the nonbreeding season (June to August) for inseminating does.  相似文献

Conservation of rare populations requires managing habitat throughout the year, especially during winter when northern populations may be limited by food and predation. Consequently, we examined distribution of nonbreeding western snowy plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus), including individually marked birds that were year-round residents and others that were migrants, in coastal northern California. Over 2 years, banded plovers exhibited high site faithfulness, occupying small linear stretches of beach (752 ± 626 m). Sites occupied by plovers had more brown algae (e.g., Macrocystis, Nereocystis, Postelsia, and Fucus) and associated invertebrates (e.g., amphipods, and flies), were wider, and had less vegetation than unoccupied sites. Our findings suggest that wintering plovers select habitats with more food and where they could more easily detect predators. Maintaining habitat with attributes that support abundant food (i.e., brown algae) and reduce predation risk (i.e., wide beaches, limited obstructive cover) may be important to individual survival and maintaining the Pacific Coast population of snowy plovers. Protecting occupied sites from human disturbance, which adversely alters nonbreeding habitat (i.e., beach grooming) and directly causes mortality, may be essential for conserving the Pacific coast population of the snowy plover, and it may benefit other shorebirds. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of treating seasonally anoestrous ewes with melatonin before ram introduction on reproductive response, and on LH secretion in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by rams.In Experiment 1, a total of 667 ewes from three flocks involving Merino (Flock 1, N = 149), Merino entrefino (Flock 2, N = 325) and Rasa Aragonesa (Flock 3, N = 203) breeds were used. Within each flock, ewes isolated from rams since the previous lambing were assigned at random to receive melatonin implants of Regulin (75, 175 and 105 in Merino, Merino entrefino and Rasa Aragonesa flocks, respectively) or to serve as untreated controls (74 in Merino, 150 in Merino entrefino and 98 in Rasa Aragonesa flocks). Fertile rams were introduced into all flocks 5 weeks after implantation in March (Flocks 1 and 2) or April (Flock 3), and remained with the ewes for a 50 day mating period. Percentage of ewes with luteal activity at ram introduction did not differ between melatonin treated and control ewes in any flock. There were no significant differences in either the mean interval from ram introduction to lambing or the distribution of lambing. Implantation with melatonin resulted in an improvement of prolificacy in all three flocks, although this only reached statistical significance in the Merino flock (1.15 vs. 1.03 in treated and control ewes, respectively, P < 0.05). Fertility was increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the Merino entrefino flock (64.5% in treated vs. 51.3% in control ewes). In Experiment 2, two trials were undertaken utilizing a total of 63 ewes. Trial 1 involved 24 mature Manchega ewes and Trial 2 involved 39 Merino ewe lambs. Half of the animals in each trial received a Regulin implant on 28 February (Trial 1) or 12 March (Trial 2) and the remaining half acted as controls. Rams were introduced 5 weeks after implantation and remained with the ewes for a 25 day period. In both trials, anoestrous ewes at ram introduction were bled at 20 min intervals for 3 h before and 5 h after ram introduction and then at 3 h intervals over the next 24 h for assessment of plasma concentrations of LH. Secretion of LH before or following introduction of rams was not affected by melatonin. Both treated and control anoestrous ewes in each trial responded to introduction of rams with an increase in the frequency of the LH pulses (P < 0.05), but no significant changes were detected in pulse amplitude or mean levels of LH. A preovulatory surge of LH was detected between 8 and 26 h after ram introduction, but neither mean interval from ram introduction to the peak of LH surge, nor the magnitude of the LH peak, was influenced by melatonin treatment. Results from this study show that: (1) melatonin implants administered during early seasonal anoestrus have the potential to improve reproductive performance in Spanish breeds of sheep, but the response is conditioned by breed, management system and environmental factors; (2) melatonin did not modify the secretion of LH in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by the ram effect under our experimental conditions.  相似文献

Sixteen anestrous adult female camels (Camelus dromedarius ) in good health and with inactive ovaries were selected from the herd during the month of June (non-breeding season). The camels were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. To induce ovarian activity, camels in Groups I,II and III were given an intramuscular injection of 250 mg hydroxyprogesterone hexanoate followed by 1000 IU eCG on days 2 and 3 of treatment. The camels were mated on Day 5 after the last eCG injection. Ovulation in Groups II and III was induced by intravenous administration of 3000 IU hCG and 40 mcg GnRH, respectively. Group IV was administered saline and served as the control. Periodic examinations per rectum were performed to explore the status of the ovaries. Blood samples were collected at 8 different stages and sera were analyzed for estradiol 17-B and progesterone using specific RIA kits. All camels in the control and treated groups were mated successfully. Levels of estradiol 17-B did not exhibit any particular trend. Blood progesterone levels suggested ovulation in 2 camels (50%) in Group I and in 3 camels (75%) in each of Groups of II and III. This was confirmed by presence of CL in the ovary during per rectum examination. No camel ovulated in the control group. One camel conceived in each of Groups I and III.  相似文献

The time of uterine involution and the changes in ovarian follicle populations were studied during early postpartum in multiparous, suckling Corriedale ewes lambing in the autumn. On Day 1 (n=5), Day 5 (n=4), Day 17 (n=4) and Day 30 (n=3) postpartum ewes underwent surgery to obtain ovaries and uteri. The weights of uteri and the lengths of the previous pregnant and nonpregnant horns were recorded as well as the presence of ovarian follicles larger than 1 mm in diameter. Uterine weight and length of uterine horns decreased (P2 to < 4 mm) follicles were also present. At days 17 and 30, aside from the small and medium follicles, all the ewes also had large (>/= 4 mm) follicles, and, at Day 30 2 ewes had large corpora lutea. We conclude that in autumn-lambing Corriedale ewes macroscopic uterine involution was complete around Day 17 post partum and that follicle development begins immediately after parturition, reaching preovulatory size before Day 17. In 2 of the 3 ewes studied until Day 30, ovulation (first progesterone increase) occurred after Day 17 (Days 18 and 25).  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of ram exposure during the breeding season, in combination with progestagen treatment on estrus synchronization, fertility the LH surge and ovulation in ewes. Experiment 1 was subdivided into experiments 1a and 1b. In all experiments cross-bred ewes were treated with an intravaginal sponge for 12-14 days and three days before sponge withdrawal ewes were divided into control (no further treatment; n=191, 103 and 50 for experiments 1a, 1b and 2, respectively) or ram exposed (three mature rams per 50 ewes were introduced; +Ram; n=187, 99 and 49 for experiments 1a, 1b and 2, respectively). At sponge withdrawal ewes in Experiments 1a and 2 received 500 IU eCG and rams were removed from all the +Ram groups. In Experiments 1a and 1b, raddled, entire rams were introduced to ewes 48 h after sponge withdrawal. The timing of mating was recorded and ewes were maintained until lambing. In Experiment 2, estrus behavior was determined every 4 h and the time of the LH surge and ovulation were determined from a subset of 10 ewes per group. In Experiment 1a, less +Ram ewes were bred by 48 h after ram introduction (control 98% versus +Ram 89%, P<0.001) and in Experiments 1a and 1b 14% fewer (P<0.05) of the ewes bred in the first 3 h after ram introduction lambed to that service. In Experiment 1a, ram exposed ewes had a lower litter size than control ewes (1.93+/-0.06 versus 1.70+/-0.06 lambs per ewe; P<0.05). In Experiment 2, rams advanced (P<0.05) estrus, the LH surge and ovulation by 2-6 h compared with control ewes. We speculate that exposure of ewes to rams increased LH secretion and that this in turn increased follicle development and the production of oestradiol that led to a more rapid onset of estrus, the LH surge and ovulation compared to control ewes. Unexpectedly, ewes that were bred had lower fertility in the +Ram groups than control groups.  相似文献

The use of either 1 or 3 controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices for progesterone priming in ewes (n=11) superovulated with 1500 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at 28 hours prior to CIDR device withdrawal was investigated in relation to the stages of development and viability of the ova produced. Progesterone levels in the ewes (n=6) treated with 3 CIDR devices were significantly higher (P<0.01) during the 11 days of insertion than in those (n=5) treated with 1 CIDR device (7.3 vs 3.3 ng/ml) over the same period. However, following superovulation, the mean (+/-SEM) ovulation rates were similar for both groups (8.2 +/- 1.7 vs 10.2 +/- 1.5). The number of ova (M+/-SEM) recovered by laparoscopy 5 days after insemination was 4.2 +/- 1.0 for ewes treated with 3 CIDR devices and 7.0 +/- 1.1 for those treated with 1 CIDR device (P<0.10). The respective ovum recovery rates (M+/-SEM) were 55+/-9.8 and 74+/-13.2%. There was no effect of progesterone concentration in the priming phase on either the stages of development of the recovered ova or on their ability to develop during in vitro culture. It was concluded, therefore, that progesterone concentrations within the range 3.3 +/- 0.1 to 7.3 +/- 0.3 ng/ml during the priming phase and 2.4 +/- 0.3 to 6.5 +/- 0.2 ng/ml at the time of PMSG administration did not affect the ovulation rate or the viability of ova recovered from superovulated ewes.  相似文献

This study compared the affect of short-term and continuous exposure to rams during the transition between anoestrus and the breeding season on the distribution of mating and subsequent lambing. Further, within ewes continuously exposed to rams we investigated the effect of replacing these rams every 17 days with 'novel' rams. During August (late anoestrus, Northern Hemisphere), multiparous, North of England mule ewes were allocated to one of four groups: SVR ewes were exposed to vasectomised rams for 24h on Day 0 (short term; n=109), RVR ewes were exposed to vasectomised rams for 24h on Days 0, 17 and 34 (short term; n=113); PVR ewes were exposed to vasectomised rams on Day 0 and remained with the same rams for the duration of the pre-mating period (continuous; n=104); NVR ewes were continuously exposed to vasectomised rams from Day 0 with the rams replaced with 'novel' rams every 17 days (continuous; n=113). Blood samples were collected from a subset of ewes (n=22 per group) to monitor progesterone. On Day 50, harnessed, entire rams were introduced for mating and raddle marks recorded daily for the first 17 days. The median date of mating occurred 1 day earlier in NVR ewes than PVR ewes (P<0.05). A synchrony score calculated from the blood sampled ewes showed that the distribution of mating was more synchronised in PVR and NVR ewes than SVR and RVR ewes (P<0.001). PVR and NVR ewes had an earlier onset of cyclic activity than RVR ewes (P<0.01). However, only NVR ewes differed from SVR ewes in this variable (P<0.05). Within ewes lambing to first service, the median date of lambing of PVR, NVR and SVR ewes occurred at least 2 days earlier than RVR ewes (at least P<0.05). Further, PVR and NVR ewes had a more compact distribution of lambing than SVR and RVR ewes (P<0.05) and lambing was more compact in NVR ewes than PVR ewes (P<0.05). In conclusion, ewes in continuous contact with rams prior to mating had a more synchronised distribution of mating and lambing than ewes given only short-term exposure to rams. This distribution of mating in continuous ram exposed ewes can be further enhanced by periodic exposure to novel rams.  相似文献

Transrectal ovarian ultrasonography was conducted in six Western white-faced ewes for 35 days from the last oestrus of the breeding season, to record the number and size of all ovarian follicles > or = 3 mm in diameter and luteal structures. Blood samples were collected once a day for estimation of serum concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), oestradiol and progesterone. Each ewe had five follicular waves (follicles growing from 3 to > or = 5 mm in diameter) over the scanning period. The duration of the growth phase of the largest ovarian follicles did not differ (P > 0.05) between waves, but follicular static and regressing phases decreased significantly (P < 0.05) after the decline in serum progesterone concentrations at the end of the last luteal phase of the breeding season. The intervals between the five follicular waves were: 9.2+/-0.4, 5.2+/-0.7, 8.3+/-0.8 and 5.8+/-0.7 days; the two shorter intervals differed (P < 0.05) from the two longer intervals. Using the cycle-detection program, rhythmic increases in serum FSH concentrations were detected in all ewes; the amplitude, duration and periodicity of FSH fluctuations did not vary (P > 0.05) throughout the period of study. The number of identified FSH peaks (7.8+/-0.5 peaks per ewe, per scanning period) was greater (P < 0.05) than the number of emerging follicular waves. Serum concentrations of oestradiol remained low (< or = 1 pg/ml) on most days, in five out of the six ewes studied, and sporadic elevations in oestradiol secretion above the non-detectable level were not associated with the emergence of follicular waves. The ovulation rate was lower than that seen during the middle portion of the breeding season (November-December) in white-faced ewes but the transitional ewes had larger corpora lutea (CL). Maximal serum concentrations of progesterone appeared to be lower and the plateau phase of progesterone secretion appeared to be shorter during the last luteal phase of the ovulatory season in comparison to the mid-breeding season of Western white-faced ewes. During the transition into anoestrus in ewes, the endogenous rhythm of FSH release is remarkably robust but the pattern of emergence of sequential follicular waves is dissociated from FSH and oestradiol secretion. Luteal progesterone secretion is suppressed because of fewer ovulations and diminished total luteal volume, but it may also result from diminished gonadotropic support. These season-related alterations in the normal pattern of ovine ovarian cycles appear to be due to reduction in ovarian responsiveness to gonadotropins and/or attenuation in secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) occurring at the onset of the anovulatory season in ewes.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years in which recently (Experiment 1) or temporarily (Experiment 2) weaned ewes and matched post-partum non-lactating flockmates (DRY) were exposed to a stimulus group of rams and oestrous ewes (10 and 20 in Experiment 1, 20 and 20 in Experiment 2) for 28 days in spring. Lactating ewes (n = 130) in Experiment 1 were isolated from their lambs 4 (W-4), 2 (W-2), 1 (W-1) or 0 (W-0) days in advance and exposed along with a group of 32 DRY flockmates. Lactating ewes in Experiment 2 (n = 230) were allocated to an unreplicated factorial of two levels of temporary weaning before stimulation (B0: control; B24: lambs removed 24 h before stimulation) by four levels of ewe-lamb contact imposed at the start of the stimulation (A0: control; A12, A24 and A36: lamb-ewe separation during the initial 12, 24 or 36 h of exposure); DRY ewes (n = 54) acted as an augmented factorial control. Oestrus (rump marks) and ovulation (laparoscopy on day 5 and on day 28 (Experiment 1) or day 32 (Experiment 2)) were recorded. Ovulation and oestrous responses in Experiment 1 were similar for DRY (90.6% and 55.2%, respectively) and recently weaned ewes (83.8% and 53.7%, respectively). Amongst recently weaned ewes, the immediate ovulation response to the rams and the proportion of ewes still cycling by day 28 tended to be lower (P = 0.065 and P = 0.011) in ewes weaned on the day of ram exposure (71.9% and 54.8% v. 87.8% and 80.0%, respectively). Ovulation rate was lower (P < 0.003) in W-2 ewes (1.3 ± 0.10) than in the other recently weaned groups. In Experiment 2, ovulation (83.3%) and oestrous (68.9%) responses in DRY ewes were higher (P = 0.022 and P = 0.053, respectively) than in lactating ewes (66.2% and 51.0%, respectively). More ewes ovulated (P = 0.036) in B24 (70.5%) than in B0 (61.8%). Ewes having their lambs returned 12 h after the onset of stimulation (A12) had poorer ovulation responses (54.9%) than control ewes (A0, 72.9%, P < 0.05); this was probably associated to lamb restitution after the sunset. Main conclusions were that (i) the presence of the lambs is a depressing factor of both ovulation and oestrous responses to the ram effect in lactating ewes, (ii) the ovulation response of lactating ewes will probably benefit from removing lambs for a period of 24 h before the onset of stimulation, (iii) until additional information becomes available, temporary weaning protocols should be designed avoiding lamb restitution during the night.  相似文献

A 2 × 2 factorial study for hormonal treatment was designed in 85 seasonally anestrous ewes with physiologically different status (nonparous, dry, and postpartum). All ewes were pre-treated with 60 mg of 6-methyl-17-acetoxy-progesterone (MAP) vaginal sponge for nine days and divided into four groups: Group I (22 ewes) — an i. m. injection of 600 i.u. pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) at the sponge removal (Day 0) and a single i.m. injection of 100 ug synthetic gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) at 36 h after the sponge removal; Group II (21 ewes) — a PMSG injection at Day 0 and a saline injection at 36 h after the sponge removal; Group III (21 ewes) — a PMSG injection two days before the sponge removal and the GnRH injection at 24 h after the sponge removal; and Group IV (21 ewes) — a PMSG injection at Day -2 and a saline injection at 24 h after the sponge removal. The treated ewes were allowed to mate once with rams for five days after treatment. Estrus incidence and lambing rates were low (69.4% and 27.1%, respectively), probably due to the mating system and poor body condition of ewes used in the study. No effect of PMSG injection two days before with-drawal of MAP sponge and the fixed-time GnRH injection were observed in estrus incidence, fertility, and prolificacy. The present study indicates that the physiological status of ewes combined with management systems including feeding and mating would be important for out-of-season breeding with hormonal treatment.  相似文献

Treatment of male woodchucks with a series of s.c. injections of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) induced testicular growth, sperm production and marked increase in serum testosterone levels in the fall, approximately 4 mo before the expected spontaneous onset of testicular activity. These results suggest that it may be possible to induce and/or maintain reproductive competence in this species outside of its normally brief breeding season.  相似文献

Changes in LH, FSH, and testosterone concentrations, testicular firmness and resilience, and scrotal circumference were monitored in 16 Corriedale rams (8 experienced adult and 8 inexperienced young) for 20 days during which they were used to stimulate ewes. The experiment was conducted during November (mid-non-breeding season). Increases (P<0.05) were observed in LH and testosterone concentrations and in testicular firmness and resilience during the first 4 days when rams were in permanent contact with estrual ewes. During the following 13 days, when rams were in contact with non-estrual ewes (i.e. initially estrual ewes were no longer in estrus), LH and testosterone concentrations decreased. When initially anestrous ewes exhibited estrus 17 to 20 days later, concentrations of testosterone increased. Testicular firmness and resilience remained high throughout the period. We conclude that: (1) rams used to stimulate anestrous ewes show an increase in LH and testosterone concentrations beginning at 12 h after joining, and greater concentrations are maintained while estrual ewes and mating are allowed; and (2) estrous and mating activity are probably the most important stimuli for the increase in hormone concentrations.  相似文献

The effects of month on the proportion of Poll Dorset ewes expressing estrus and ovulating and on their ovulation rate when continually exposed to vasectomised rams and the effects of isolating the ewes from rams in winter/early spring were examined during 15 months in New South Wales, Australia. The percentage of ewes ovulating and their ovulation rate varied from 23% and 1.10 in November to an average of 99% and 1.85 in April and June, and the proportion of ewes expressing estrus followed a similar trend. Some ewes (6.8%) ovulated throughout the 15 months, and the average breeding season was 294 (SE = 6.1) days. Isolating ewes from rams in late winter/early spring significantly decreased the proportion of ewes ovulating from September to November, increased the proportion in December, but did not significantly alter ovulation rate. The variability in reproductive measures during spring offers scope for selection; with the ram effect, improvements in spring joining results from Dorset ewes are possible.  相似文献

The introduction of Dorset rams to Romney ewes at the beginning of the breeding season (February 14 to March 1) stimulated 39% to 70% of the non-cycling ewes to ovulate. Most of the ewes that ovulated did so within 65 to 72 hours of ram introduction. The ovulations were preceded by LH peaks, the mean onset of which was 35.0±4.8 (SE) hours after ram introduction. The mean oestradiol-17β concentration per ewe ranged from 0.3 to 14.9 pg/ml plasma and there were large fluctuations among the samples collected every 3 hours. All ewes, irrespective of treatment, had similar mean concentrations of oestradiol-17β and ovarian follicular activity, and there were no changes in oestradiol-17β concentration that could be attributed to the presence of the rams.  相似文献
