In polyandrous mating systems, sperm competition and cryptic female choice (CFC) are well recognized as postcopulatory evolutionary forces. However, it remains challenging to separate CFC from sperm competition and to estimate how much CFC influences insemination success because those processes usually occur inside the female's body. The Japanese pygmy squid, Idiosepius paradoxus, is an ideal species in which to separate CFC from sperm competition because sperm transfer by the male and sperm displacement by the female can be observed directly at an external location on the female's body. Here, we counted the number of spermatangia transferred to, removed from, and remaining on the female body during single copulation episodes. We measured behavioral and morphological characteristics of the male, such as duration of copulation and body size. Although males with larger body size and longer copulation time were capable of transferring larger amounts of sperm, females preferentially eliminated sperm from males with larger body size and shorter copulation time by spermatangia removal; thus, CFC could attenuate sperm precedence by larger males, whereas it reinforces sperm precedence by males with longer copulation time. Genetic paternity analysis revealed that fertilisation success for each male was correlated with remaining sperm volume that is adjusted by females after copulation.  相似文献

We examined the effects of male and female behaviour and morphology on the process of sperm storage in the yellow dung fly Scathophaga (Scatophaga) stercoraria. The larger of two males was more successful in transferring sperm to females' spermathecae the greater the difference in weight to his smaller competitor, as expected from previous studies by other authors. Sperm length, which is not correlated to body size, affected sperm access to the spermathecae, the female storage organs; longer sperm were more likely to be found in the spermathecae. A female typically had a singlet spermatheca and two spermathecae arranged as a pair, a doublet. However, there was variation from this pattern, which influenced the pattern of sperm storage. We measured the proportion of sperm from two competing males in females' singlet and doublet spermathecae. When the larger male's sperm were longer than his competitor's, they were more often in a female's singlet when he was her first mate and equally likely to be in the singlet or doublet when he was her second mate. When the larger male's sperm were shorter than his competitor's, the pattern was more complicated, principally because his sperm were not as successful at entering the female's doublet when he was her second mate. Counts of sperm, made using the same experimental procedure, showed that these effects were due to greater numbers of sperm entering the females' doublets when the larger male mated second. Sperm length was thus the factor with the largest single influence on the pattern of sperm storage. However, our most important result is that it was the interactions between male and female characters that were significant. Males mostly determine the early, especially precopulatory, events and females strongly influence the later ones.  相似文献

In a manure-inhabiting predatory mite, Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Gamasida, Macrochelidae), when the female mates with two males, the first male takes nearly perfect fertilization priority (Yasui, 1988). The present study examined whether the first-male's sperm precedence is influenced by the copula-duration of the first and second males mating with the same female, and whether males control their copulation duration by assessing the probability that the mate has been inseminated by other males. Results of the artificial interruption of copulation showed that sperm precedence value, P2 (the proportion of the offspring fathered by the second male), was negatively correlated with the copulation duration of the first male but positively correlated with that of the second male. There was a threshold (ca. 180–300 seconds) in the first-male's copulation duration beyond which P2 decreased drastically; when length of the first copulation exceeded this threshold, the second males did not fertilize eggs, whereas they fertilized more than half of the eggs when the first-copulation duration was shorter than the threshold. Almost all males copulated for a longer period (average 509.8 seconds) than this threshold if the copulation duration of the previous male had not exceeded the threshold, but if it was longer than the threshold, second males had shortened their copulation (67.6 seconds). These results suggest that males are able to assess the insemination status of their mates and to adjust their copulation duration depending on the probability of fertilizing eggs by their own sperm. A mechanistic explanation for sperm precedence (i.e., plug-formation within sperm receptive organ of the females) is proposed.  相似文献

Single mating productivities (used as estimates of the relative number of sperm transferred) are highly correlated with several parameters used to quantify sperm competition in D. melanogster. Matings that result in the transferal of large numbers of sperm are associated with longer delay of female remating than are matings that transfer fewer sperm. Males that transfer larger numbers of sperm also suffer a smaller proportional reduction in reproductive success (smaller COST) than males transferring fewer sperm. The number of sperm transferred by a female's second mate is not related to the COST to the first male. However, there is a high positive correlation between the number of sperm transferred by the second male and P2 (the proportion of second male progeny following female remating). Thus, large sperm numbers apparently increase the reproductive success of males whether they mate with virgin or non-virgin females. Because female receptivity mediates these events, there is no need to invoke sperm displacement to explain the reproductive outcome of female remating. The timing of female remating is evaluated in terms of a receptivity-threshold model. This model suggests that female receptivity returns when some small, relatively constant, number of sperm remain in storage.  相似文献

In most insect species where double matings occur, sperm from the second male preferentially fertilize subsequent eggs. However, we demonstrate here that, as already shown for some other hymenopteran species, this is not the case in the ichneumonid waspDiadromus pulchellus (Wesmeal): sperm from the first male usually father all the female progeny. This precedence of the first male sperm is also observed in double matings involving an haploid male and a diploid sterile male, whichever is the first mating male. We discuss the consequences of this phenomenon from an evolutionary point of view.  相似文献

Male True Crabs use two pairs of gonopods to deliver mating products during copulation. Commonly, the second pair is shorter than the first pair, and most research to date has focused on species with short second gonopods. We investigated male and female copulatory organs in Calappula saussurei and Calappa pelii, two species of box crabs (Calappidae) with second gonopods which are longer than the first pair. Scanning electron microscopy and histological cross sectioning show that the female copulatory system is unique in several aspects: the genital duct is part concave and part simple type. The seminal receptacle is divided into two chambers, a ventral chamber of ectodermal and mesodermal origin, and a dorsal chamber of ectodermal origin. This dorsal chamber is the location of spermatophore reception during copulation. A sperm plug closes the dorsal chamber off. We propose that long second gonopods deliver male mating products directly into the dorsal chamber. To date, spermatophore reception has been associated with the mesodermal tissue of the seminal receptacle. The copulatory system of box crabs with long second gonopods shows novel deviations from this general pattern. J. Morphol. 276:77–89, 2015. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The mass of the spermatophore transferred by a previously mated Choristoneura rosaceana male increases with time elapsed since the last mating but, even after 4 days, it never reaches the mass of the spermatophore of a virgin male. However, spermatophore mass is clearly not a good indicator of the male reproductive investment as the quantity of sperm in the second ejaculate of a previously mated male is the same as that of his first, if he is allowed a 2 (eupyrene sperm) to 3 day (apyrene sperm) recovery period. The interval between the first two matings had no influence on female fecundity or longevity but significantly affected fertility if the male had only 1 day to recover. The length of the post-copulatory refractory period was also shorter in females mated with previously mated males than in those mated with virgins, regardless of the male's remating interval. Furthermore, a significant variation in the eupyrene sperm content of the spermatophore transferred by virgin males had no influence on the length of the female refractory period. Globally, these results support the hypothesis that a factor, other than sperm numbers in the spermatheca, is responsible for maintaining the inhibition of pheromone production in this species.  相似文献

In vitro matured porcine oocytes were used to test the importance of protein synthesis for sperm penetration, the second meiotic division, and pronuclear development. Experiments were carried out to measure rates of protein synthesis in the presence of protein synthesis inhibitors (35 microM or 350 microM cycloheximide or a combination of inhibitors) (study 1); to test for sperm penetration and pronuclear development when protein synthesis was inhibited during fertilization (study 2); to test for oocyte meiosis, sperm penetration, and female and male pronuclear development when protein synthesis was inhibited during maturation (oocyte maturation in vitro with addition of inhibitor at 0, 24, or 36 hr of culture) (study 3); and to analyze the changes in the pattern of protein synthesis during these phases. Sperm penetration, oocyte meiosis, and female pronuclear development were not affected by the total inhibition of protein synthesis during fertilization. By contrast, inhibiting protein synthesis during maturation severely impaired the completion of meiosis and pronuclear development. Although inhibition of protein synthesis after 36 hr of maturation culture did not totally block male pronuclear development (MPN), the rate of MPN formation was lower than for controls (52% vs. 72%, P less than 0.05). However, protein synthesis was absolutely essential between 24 and 36 hr for the formation of MPN after decondensation. This period of maturation coincided with the dominant phase of protein reprogramming in the oocyte.  相似文献

Despite its central role in post-copulatory sexual selection, the female reproductive tract is poorly understood. Here we provide the first experimental study of the adaptive significance of variation in female sperm-storage organ morphology. Using populations of Drosophila melanogaster artificially selected for longer or shorter seminal receptacles, we identify relationships between the length of this primary sperm-storage organ and the number of sperm stored, pattern of progeny production, rate of egg fertilization, remating interval, and pattern of sperm precedence. Costs and benefits of relatively short or long organs were identified. Benefits of longer receptacles include increased sperm-storage capacity and thus progeny production from a single insemination. Results suggest that longer receptacles have not naturally evolved because of developmental time costs and a correlated reduction in longevity of mated females. This latter cost may be a consequence of sexual conflict mediated by ejaculate toxicity. Receptacle length did not alter the pattern of sperm precedence, which is consistent with data on the co-evolution of sperm and female receptacle length, and a pattern of differential male fertilization success being principally determined by the interaction between these male and female traits.  相似文献

Meiotic drive results when sperm carrying a driving chromosome preferentially survive development. Meiotic drive should therefore influence sperm competition because drive males produce fewer sperm than non-drive males. Whether meiotic drive also influences the competitive ability of sperm after ejaculation is unknown. Here we report the results from reciprocal crosses that are designed for estimating the sperm precedence of male stalk-eyed flies (Cyrtodiopsis whitei) with or without X-linked meiotic drive. We find that nearly half of all sex-ratio males, as compared with 14% of non-sex-ratio males, fail to produce young in a reciprocal cross. Furthermore, the proportion of progeny sired by a sex-ratio male in a female jointly inseminated by a non-sex-ratio male was less than expected from the number of sperm transferred. These effects are not due to differential sperm storage by females because, after a single mating with a sex-ratio male, all females stored sperm and because two sex-ratio males share paternity after jointly mating with a female. In addition to demonstrating a new mechanism of sperm competition, these results provide insight into the maintenance of sex-ratio polymorphisms. Sex-ratio males have less than one-half the fertility of non-sex-ratio males, as is required in order for frequency-dependent selection on males to produce a stable sex-ratio polymorphism.  相似文献

Sperm competition has been a major selective force acting on male and female behaviour. Theory predicts that when sperm compete numerically, selection will favour males that vary the number of sperm they transfer with sperm competition risk. This often leads to increased copula duration when sperm competition risk is high, the selective advantage of which is increased paternity. We investigated the copulatory behaviour of the common dung fly Sepsis cynipsea in relation to male and female size, female mating status, age, and presence or absence of dung. This fly is unusual in that males mate-guard before copula while females use the sperm of previous males for their current clutch. Body size had no effect on copula duration, but duration of first copulations depended on female age, with older females having longer copulations. For females that copulated twice, there was an interaction between female age and mating status influencing copula duration: old females had longer copulations than young females, but second copulas were longer for young females. Residual testis size of nonvirgin males was smaller than for virgins, and testis shrinkage was significantly associated with copula duration, which indicates that males transfer more ejaculate with longer copulations. We therefore conclude that copulation duration and ejaculate transfer vary in accordance with sperm competition theory.  相似文献

The functional morphology of the genital appendages, horn organs and modified prosomal limb III of the Silurian eurypterid, Baltoeurypterus tetragonophthalmus (Fischer, 1839) (Chelieerata: Eurypterida) is investigated. The longer type A genital appendage, interpreted as a female structure, is associated with a pair of horn organs, regarded as spermathecae. The shorter type B appendage, interpreted as male, is associated with scimitar lobes on prosomal limb III, regarded as clasping structures. A mechanism is proposed by which the type A appendage was lowered through flexure of the genital operculum acting along sutures in the cuticle. A model of mating is suggested, involving the male depositing an unstalked spermatophorc on the substrate and the female retrieving it for storage in the spermathecae. This model is more arachnid-like than mating in Limutus (an extant aquatic chclicerate), and suggests that sperm transfer using spcrmatophores and storage of sperm in spermathecae, allowed the timing of egg production in curyptcrids to be controlled.  相似文献

Bovine follicular oocytes collected at slaughter were matured and fertilized in vitro with in-vitro capacitated spermatozoa. Analysis of 621 penetrated ova fixed at various times after in-vitro insemination led to definition of 6 stages of early development. A time sequence for sperm penetration, sperm head decondensation, male pronucleus formation, the activation of second meiotic division, female chromosome decondensation and pronucleus development was established. First sperm penetration into the ooplasm was recorded 6 h after insemination; 1-2 h was required for the sperm head to decondense and another 4-6 h to develop into the opposing pronucleus stage. Synkaryosis and first cleavage occurred 28 h after fertilization. Examination of the early stages revealed four types of abnormalities, i.e. polyspermy, polygyny, asynchrony between male and female pronucleus development, and preactivation of cytokinesis.  相似文献

Females of many species mate with multiple males (polyandry), resulting in male–male competition extending to post‐copulation (sperm competition). Males adapt to such post‐copulatory sexual selection by altering features of their ejaculate that increase its competitiveness and/or by decreasing the risk of sperm competition through female manipulation or interference with rival male behaviour. At ejaculation, males of many species deposit copulatory plugs, which are commonly interpreted as a male adaptation to post‐copulatory competition and are thought to reduce or delay female remating. Here, we used a vertebrate model species, the house mouse, to study the consequences of copulatory plugs for post‐copulatory competition. We experimentally manipulated plugs after a female's first mating and investigated the consequences for rival male behaviour and paternity outcome. We found that even intact copulatory plugs were ineffective at preventing female remating, but that plugs influenced the rival male copulatory behaviour. Rivals facing intact copulatory plugs performed more but shorter copulations and ejaculated later than when the plug had been fully or partially removed. This suggests that the copulatory plug represents a considerable physical barrier to rival males. The paternity share of first males increased with a longer delay between the first and second males' ejaculations, indicative of fitness consequences of copulatory plugs. However, when males provided little copulatory stimulation, the incidence of pregnancy failure increased, representing a potential benefit of intense and repeated copulation besides plug removal. We discuss the potential mechanisms of how plugs influence sperm competition outcome and consequences for male copulatory behaviour.  相似文献

In many animal species, mating behaviour is highly ritualised, which may allow us to relate some of its consequences, e.g. male paternity and female receptivity, to the progression of phases in the mating sequence; at the same time, ritualisation raises the question of to what extent the partners, especially the males, are able to influence the outcome of mating for their own benefit. We studied the linyphiid spider Linyphia triangularis in which mating follows a strict sequence during which the male inducts two droplets of sperm and transfers them to the female. We performed sperm competition experiments (sterile-male technique) including four treatments, in which the copulation of the first male was interrupted at prescribed phases of the mating sequence, while the second male was allowed a complete mating. Second males spent a shorter time than first males on the behaviours prior to sperm transfer, but the amount of sperm (2 droplets) and the time spent in sperm transfer were independent of the females’ mating status. The proportion of females accepting the second male depended on the mating duration of the first male, i.e. whether the first male had transferred one or two sperm droplets. After a complete first mating, most females accepted no further males. A last-male sperm precedence was apparent if only half of the first sperm droplet had been transferred by the first male, but this switched to a first male precedence if one full sperm droplet had been transferred. Thus, even in the face of sperm competition, it is sufficient for the first male to transfer one sperm droplet. The second sperm droplet and the extended copulatory courtship associated with its transfer may serve to induce a lack of receptivity in the female, but the males seem unable to enhance their reproductive success through variable copulatory tactics.  相似文献

Two disjunction defective meiotic mutants, ord and mei-S332, each of which disrupts meiosis in both male and female Drosophila melanogaster, were analyzed cytologically and genetically in the male germ-line. It was observed that sister-chromatids are frequently associated abnormally during prophase I and metaphase I in ord. Sister chromatid associations in mei-S332 are generally normal during prophase I and metaphase I. By telophase I, sister chromatids have frequently precociously separated in both mutants. During the first division sister chromatids disjoin from one another frequently in ord and rarely in mei-S332. It is argued that the simplest interpretation of the observations is that each mutant is defective in sister chromatid cohesiveness and that the defect in ord manifests itself earlier than does the defect in mei-S332. In addition, based on these mutant effects, several conclusions regarding normal meiotic processes are drawn. (1) The phenotype of these mutants support the proposition that the second meiotic metaphase (mitotic-type) position of chromosomes and their equational orientation is a consequence of the equilibrium, at the metaphase plate, of pulling forces acting at the kinetochores and directed towards the poles. (2) Chromosomes which lag during the second meiotic division tend to be lost. (3) Sister chromatid cohesiveness, or some function necessary for sister chromatid cohesiveness, is required for the normal reductional orientation of sister kinetochores during the first meiotic division. (4) The kinetochores of a half-bivalent are double at the time of chromosome orientation during the first meiotic division. Finally, functions which are required throughout meiosis in both sexes must be considered in the pathways of meiotic control.  相似文献

Males of certain bushcrickets (Orthoptera: Ensifera: Tettigoniidae) possess sclerotized internal genital devices termed titillators. These titillators are paired chitinized structures for which the function remains to be completely determined. We studied the role of the titillators during copulation in the bushcricket Metrioptera roeselii (Hagenbach, 1822), in the context of four a priori hypotheses for their function during mating and insemination: (1) bushcricket titillators act as anchors to secure matings; (2) titillators facilitate sperm removal or sperm dumping in the polyandrous females; (3) titillators stimulate the females during copulation; and/or (4) titillators are organs that assure an accurate spermatophore transfer. To distinguish between those hypotheses, virgin females were mated with males of five groups: unmanipulated (Control), males with titillator tips removed (T‐tips); males with both titillator arms cut in half (T½); and males with titillator arms completely ablated on one side (T‐1); or on both sides (T‐2). These manipulations were chosen to test the response towards an increasing removal of the titillator processes (T‐tips, T½, T‐2) and to include a strongly asymmetric manipulation for comparison (T‐1 vs. T‐2). Male titillators were observed to be rhythmically inserted into the female's genital chamber during copulation. Females generally stayed motionless during titillation, with resistance behaviours observed at a low rate but increasing to 38% when females mated with T‐1 males. In some cases, female resistance behaviour resulted in severe male damage, although pairs never separated. After remating of females, we traced no sperm attached to titillators of the second mate. This fact contradicts any sperm removal function. Titillator manipulation reduced the capacity of a male to attach the spermatophore. This spermatophore detachment was a result of titillator ablation without a significant relation to rhythmical titillator movements or correlation with female resistance behaviour. We therefore conclude that titillators in M. roeselii function as tools to stimulate the females and accurately place the spermatophore.  相似文献
