The present study shows evidence for conscious motor intention in motor preparation prior to movement execution. We demonstrate that conscious motor intention of directed movement, combined with minimally supra-threshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex, determines the direction and the force of resulting movements, whilst a lack of intention results in weak and omni-directed muscle activation. We investigated changes of consciously intended goal directed movements by analyzing amplitudes of motor-evoked potentials of the forearm muscle, flexor carpi radialis (FCR), and extensor carpi radialis (ECR), induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right motor cortex and their motor outcome. Right-handed subjects were asked to develop a strong intention to move their left wrist (flexion or extension), without any overt motor output at the wrist, prior to brain stimulation. Our analyses of hand acceleration and electromyography showed that during the strong motor intention of wrist flexion movement, it evoked motor potential responses that were significantly larger in the FCR muscle than in the ECR, whilst the opposite was true for an extension movement. The acceleration data on flexion/extension corresponded to this finding. Under no-intention conditions again, which served as a reference for motor evoked potentials, brain stimulation resulted in undirected and minimally simultaneous extension/flexion innervation and virtually no movement. These results indicate that conscious intentions govern motor function, which in turn shows that a neuronal activation representing an “intention network” in the human brain pre-exists, and that it functionally represents target specific motor circuits. Until today, it was unclear whether conscious motor intention exists prior to movement, or whether the brain constructs such an intention after movement initiation. Our study gives evidence that motor intentions become aware before any motor execution.  相似文献

Goal-directed, coordinated movements in humans emerge from a variety of constraints that range from 'high-level' cognitive strategies based on perception of the task to 'low-level' neuromuscular-skeletal factors such as differential contributions to coordination from flexor and extensor muscles. There has been a tendency in the literature to dichotomize these sources of constraint, favouring one or the other rather than recognizing and understanding their mutual interplay. In this experiment, subjects were required to coordinate rhythmic flexion and extension movements with an auditory metronome, the rate of which was systematically increased. When subjects started in extension on the beat of the metronome, there was a small tendency to switch to flexion at higher rates, but not vice versa. When subjects were asked to contact a physical stop, the location of which was either coincident with or counterphase to the auditory stimulus, two effects occurred. When haptic contact was coincident with sound, coordination was stabilized for both flexion and extension. When haptic contact was counterphase to the metronome, coordination was actually destabilized, with transitions occurring from both extension to flexion on the beat and from flexion to extension on the beat. These results reveal the complementary nature of strategic and neuromuscular factors in sensorimotor coordination. They also suggest the presence of a multimodal neural integration process - which is parametrizable by rate and context - in which intentional movement, touch and sound are bound into a single, coherent unit.  相似文献

Unilateral movements are mainly controlled by the contralateral hemisphere, even though the primary motor cortex ipsilateral (M1(ipsi)) to the moving body side can undergo task-related changes of activity as well. Here we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate whether representations of the wrist flexor (FCR) and extensor (ECR) in M1(ipsi) would be modulated when unilateral rhythmical wrist movements were executed in isolation or in the context of a simple or difficult hand-foot coordination pattern, and whether this modulation would differ for the left versus right hemisphere. We found that M1(ipsi) facilitation of the resting ECR and FCR mirrored the activation of the moving wrist such that facilitation was higher when the homologous muscle was activated during the cyclical movement. We showed that this ipsilateral facilitation increased significantly when the wrist movements were performed in the context of demanding hand-foot coordination tasks whereas foot movements alone influenced the hand representation of M1(ipsi) only slightly. Our data revealed a clear hemispheric asymmetry such that MEP responses were significantly larger when elicited in the left M1(ipsi) than in the right. In experiment 2, we tested whether the modulations of M1(ipsi) facilitation, caused by performing different coordination tasks with the left versus right body sides, could be explained by changes in short intracortical inhibition (SICI). We found that SICI was increasingly reduced for a complex coordination pattern as compared to rest, but only in the right M1(ipsi). We argue that our results might reflect the stronger involvement of the left versus right hemisphere in performing demanding motor tasks.  相似文献

The influence of mechanosensory stimulation of a second segment swimmeret upon the abdominal postural program was examined in an isolated abdominal nerve cord-swimmeret preparation. The swimmeret was stimulated in several different ways to assess the extent of influence exerted on abdominal positioning. Localized tactile stimulation of the swimmeret surface with a mechanical probe usually generated flexion inhibition where the flexor inhibitor (f5) was activated while the small and medium flexor excitors were inhibited. Flexion inhibition was much stronger in females than males. In 50% of the animals a weak flexion excitation was seen. After 3-6 hours the response of one-third of these preparations changed to flexion inhibition. Strong manual stimulation of the swimmeret surface inhibited all of the flexor excitors (f1, f2, f3, f4, and f6) while exciting the inhibitor f5 and increasing extensor activity. Similar extension responses were observed in both sexes. Repeated tactile stimulation of the swimmeret surface elicited a response similar to that evoked during manual stimulation. The strongest extension response was produced at 2 Hz which falls within the normal range of swimmeret beating in intact lobsters. Similar extension responses were also obtained during spontaneous swimmeret beating and rhythmic manual movement of the swimmeret.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aim of this study was to illustrate the influence of different levels of the fulcrum (the axis of sagittal rotation) on measured trunk flexion and extension strength and compare force and torque as a unit of measure. The isometric trunk strength was measured in 16 healthy female subjects. The dynamometer was kept at the shoulder level and the moment arm was lengthened step by step by moving the fulcrum caudally from the level of the posterior superior iliac spine to the level of the gluteal fold. The moment of force (torque) increased from 117.0 to 208.5 N · m in flexion and from 182.2 to 292.5 N · m in extension,P < 0.0001. An attempt to quantify this change was made. Paradoxically, the measured force remained at a constant level (in flexion) or slightly decreased (in extension). We concluded that torque as a measure of trunk flexion and extension strength is highly dependent on the level of the rotation axis and force appears to be less sensitive for variations with the height of the fulcrum. We would suggest that the observed increase in torque is physiological and reflects to what extent hip flexor or extensor muscles are recruited. The force, on the other hand, may better characterize a person's capability to perform functional tasks. Force and torque should strictly be distinguished from one another.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the human lumbosacral joint behaves differently from L1-L5 joints and provides primary moment-rotation responses under pure moment flexion and extension and left and right lateral bending on a level-by-level basis. In addition, range of motion (ROM) and stiffness data were extracted from the moment-rotation responses. Ten T12-S1 column specimens with ages ranging from 27 to 68 years (mean: 50.6+/-13.2) were tested at a load level of 4.0 N m. Nonlinear flexion and extension and left and right lateral bending moment-rotation responses at each spinal level are reported in the form of a logarithmic function. The mean ROM was the greatest at the L5-S1 level under flexion (7.37+/-3.69 degrees) and extension (4.62+/-2.56 degrees) and at the L3-L4 level under lateral bending (4.04+/-1.11 degrees). The mean ROM was the least at the L1-L2 level under flexion (2.42+/-0.90 degrees), L2-L3 level under extension (1.58+/-0.63 degrees), and L1-L2 level under lateral bending (2.50+/-0.75 degrees). The present study proved the hypothesis that L5-S1 motions are significantly greater than L1-L5 motions under flexion and extension loadings, but the hypothesis was found to be untrue under the lateral bending mode. These experimental data are useful in the improved validation of FE models, which will increase the confidence of stress analysis and other modeling applications.  相似文献

The role of the intrinsic finger flexor muscles was investigated during finger flexion tasks. A suspension system was used to measure isometric finger forces when the point of force application varied along fingers in a distal-proximal direction. Two biomechanical models, with consideration of extensor mechanism Extensor Mechanism Model (EMM) and without consideration of extensor mechanism Flexor Model (FM), were used to calculate forces of extrinsic and intrinsic finger flexors. When the point of force application was at the distal phalanx, the extrinsic flexor muscles flexor digitorum profundus, FDP, and flexor digitorum superficialis, FDS, accounted for over 80% of the summed force of all flexors, and therefore were the major contributors to the joint flexion at the distal interphalangeal (DIP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. When the point of force application was at the DIP joint, the FDS accounted for more than 70% of the total force of all flexors, and was the major contributor to the PIP and MCP joint flexion. When the force of application was at the PIP joint, the intrinsic muscle group was the major contributor for MCP flexion, accounting for more than 70% of the combined force of all flexors. The results suggest that the effects of the extensor mechanism on the flexors are relatively small when the location of force application is distal to the PIP joint. When the external force is applied proximally to the PIP joint, the extensor mechanism has large influence on force production of all flexors. The current study provides an experimental protocol and biomechanical models that allow estimation of the effects of extensor mechanism on both the extrinsic and intrinsic flexors in various loading conditions, as well as differentiating the contribution of the intrinsic and extrinsic finger flexors during isometric flexion.  相似文献

Relations between the kinematic parameters of slow (non-ballistic) targeted extension movements in the elbow joint of humans and characteristics of the movement-related EMG activity in the two heads of the m. triceps brachii were analyzed. Test movements were performed under conditions of application of non-inertional external loadings directed toward flexion. It was shown that the movement-related EMG activity of the elbow extensors, similarly to what was observed in the flexors at flexion movements with the same parameters, demonstrates a complex structure and includes dynamic and stationary phases. In the former phase, in turn, initial and main components can be differentiated. The rising edge and decay of the main component of the dynamic extensor EMG phase could be approximated by exponential functions; this component was never split into a few subcomponents. Dependences between the amplitudes of m. triceps brachii EMG phases and the amplitude of the movement (or external loading) were, as a rule, nonlinear but monotonic. An increase in the test movement velocity led to an increase in the rate of rise of the rising edge of the dynamic EMG phase, while an increment in the amplitude was less significant. Under the used test conditions, the activity of the elbow extensors was usually accompanied by some coactivation of the antagonists (m. biceps brachii). It is concluded that motor commands coming to the elbow extensors at performance of the extension test movements differ from motor commands to the flexors at analogous flexion test movements by a simpler structure and more tonic pattern. Biomechanical specificities of fixation of the mentioned muscle groups to the arm bones (stability of the moment for application of the extensor force under conditions of changing the joint angle vs variable moment of the flexor force) are considered one of the main reasons for such specificity of the patterns of the extensor and flexor motor commands.  相似文献

The present paper aims to investigate two characteristics; task performance and muscular load during skill process for the pen-tablet input system with the mouse input system on the PC in order to determine the comprehensive usability for the pen-tablet system. Two computer tasks were designed for the study: task SL and task PT. Task SL was a repetitive computer-drawing including typical mouse motions such as clicking and drag-dropping. Task PT was a polygon tracing task requiring fine-controlled movements with the input device. Surface electromyography (EMG) and performance data were measured during the task. When the pen-tablet was being used, low amplitudes of EMGs for the biceps brachii, the flexor digitorum superficialis, and the extensor digitorum were found, whereas no EMG difference for the trapezius was found for both tasks. On the first day, the performance with the mouse was much higher than the performance with the pen-tablet in terms of error rates and the number of completed trials. However, the performance with the pen-tablet exceeded the performance with the mouse from the second day on, and the subjects performed better with the pen-tablet than with the mouse. Current results imply that the skill process for the pen-tablet system was very short and the subjects felt comfortable to use the new system from the beginning.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate muscle fatigue measuring changes in force output and force tremor and electromyographic activity (EMG) during two sustained maximal isometric contractions for 60s: (1) concurrent hand grip and elbow flexion (HG and EF); or (2) hand grip and elbow extension (HG and EE). Each force tremor amplitude was decomposed into four frequency bands (1-3, 4-10, 11-20, and 21-50Hz). Surface EMGs were recorded from the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), extensor digitorum (ED), biceps brachii (BB) and lateral head of triceps brachii (TB). The HG and EF forces for the HG and EF and the HG force for the HG and EE declined rapidly, whereas the EE force remained almost constant near to the initial value for the first 40s and then declined. The decrease in EMG amplitude was observed not for the FDS muscle but for the ED muscle. The HG tremor amplitude for each frequency band showed similar decreasing rate, whereas the decreases in EF and EE tremor amplitudes for the lower band (below 10Hz) were slower than those for the higher band (above 11Hz). The neuromuscular mechanisms underlying muscle fatigue during sustained maximal concurrent contractions of hand grip and elbow flexion or extension are discussed.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the functional significance of excitatory spinal reflex arcs (facilitation) between musculus (M.) pronator teres (PT) and M. extensor carpi radialis (ECR, longus: ECRL, brevis: ECRB) in humans, activities of the muscles were studied with electromyography (EMG) and electrical neuromuscular stimulation (ENS). In EMG study, activities of PT, ECRL, ECRB, and M. flexor carpi radialis during repetitive static (isometric) wrist extension and a series of a dynamic motion of wrist flexion/extension in the prone, semiprone, and supine positions of the forearm were recorded in 12 healthy human subjects. In the prone, semiprone, and supine positions, PT and ECR showed parallel activities during the static extension in all, eight, and eight subjects, respectively, and at the extension phase during the dynamic motion in all, eight and five subjects, respectively. These findings suggest that co-contraction of PT and ECR occurs during wrist extension movements at least with the prone forearm. The facilitation must be active during the co-contraction. In ENS study, ENS to PT was examined in 11 out of the 12 and that to ECRL was in the 12 subjects. Before ENS, the forearm was in the prone, semiprone, and supine positions. In all the subjects, ENS to PT induced a motion of forearm pronation to the maximum pronation. ENS to ECRL induced motions of wrist extension to the maximum extension and abduction (radial flexion) to 5-20 degrees of abduction regardless of the positions of the forearm. Moreover, it induced 30-80 degrees supination of the forearm from the prone position. Consequently, combined ENS to PT and ECRL resulted in motions of the extension and abduction while keeping the maximum pronation. These findings suggest that the co-contraction of PT and ECR during wrist extension movements occurs to prevent supinating the forearm. Forearm supination from the prone position should be added to one of the actions of ECRL.  相似文献

The activity of certain muscles that cross the elbow joint complex (EJC) are affected by forearm position and forearm movement during elbow flexion/extension. To investigate whether these changes are based on the musculoskeletal geometry of the joint, a three-dimensional musculotendinoskeletal computer model of the EJC was used to estimate individual muscle activity in multi-degree-of-freedom (df) rapid (ballistic) elbow movements. It is hypothesized that this model could reproduce the major features of elbow muscle activity during multi-df elbow movements using dynamic optimal control theory, given a minimum-time performance criterion. Results from the model are presented and verified with experimental kinematic and electromyographic data from movements that involved both one-df elbow flexion/extension and two-df flexion/extension with forearm pronation/supination. The model demonstrated how the activity of particular muscles is affected by both forearm position and movement, as measured in these experiments and as previously reported by others. These changes were most evident in the flexor muscles and least evident in the extensor muscles. The model also indicated that, for specific one- and two-df movements, activating a muscle that is antagonistic or noncontributory to the movement could reduce the movement time. The major features of muscle activity in multi-df elbow movements appear to be highly dependent on the joint's musculoskeletal geometry and are not strictly based on neural influences or neuroanatomical substrates. Limited plantar flexor strength and hip extension range of motion (ROM) in older adults are believed to underlie common age-related differences in gait. However, no studies of age-related differences in gait have quantified the percentage of strength and ROM used during gait. We examined peak hip angles, hip torques and plantar flexor torques, and corresponding estimates of functional capacity utilized (FCU), which we define as the percentage of available strength or joint ROM used, in 10 young and 10 older healthy adults walking under self-selected and controlled (slow and fast) conditions. Older adults walked with about 30% smaller hip extension angle, 28% larger hip flexion angle, 34% more hip extensor torque in the slow condition, and 12% less plantar flexor torque in the fast condition than young adults. Older adults had higher FCU than young adults for hip flexion angle (47% vs. 34%) and hip extensor torque (48% vs. 27%). FCUs for plantar flexor torque (both age groups) and hip extension angle (older adults in all conditions; young adults in self-selected gait) were not significantly <100%, and were higher than for other measures examined. Older adults lacked sufficient hip extension ROM to walk with a hip extension angle as large as that of young adults. Similarly, in the fast gait condition older adults lacked the strength to match the plantar flexor torque produced by young adults. This supports the hypothesis that hip extension ROM and plantar flexor strength are limiting factors in gait and contribute to age-related differences in gait.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate thumb postures, thumb movements and muscle activity when using mobile phones for SMS messaging and to determine whether there were differences in these exposures (a) across various mobile phone tasks, (b) between gender and (c) between subjects with and without musculoskeletal symptoms in shoulders and upper extremities. Fifty-six young adults (15 healthy and 41 with musculoskeletal symptoms) performed a series of distinct tasks on a mobile phone. Muscular load in four forearm/hand muscles in the right arm and the right and left trapezius muscles were measured using electromyography (EMG). Thumb movements were registered using an electrogoniometer. The results showed that postures (sitting or standing) and the type of mobile phone task (holding the phone versus texting) affected muscle activity and thumb positions. Females compared to males had higher muscle activity in the extensor digitorum and the abductor pollicis longus when entering SMS messages and tended to have greater thumb abduction, higher thumb movement velocities and fewer pauses in the thumb movements. Subjects with symptoms had lower muscle activity levels in the abductor pollicis longus and tended to have higher thumb movement velocities and fewer pauses in the thumb movements compared to those without symptoms.  相似文献

Wrist splints are commonly prescribed to limit wrist motion and provide support at night and during inactive periods but are often used in the workplace. In theory, splinting the wrist should reduce wrist extensor muscle activity by stabilizing the joint and reducing the need for co-contraction to maintain posture. Ten healthy volunteers underwent a series of 24 10-s gripping trials with surface electromyography on 6 forearm muscles. Trials were randomized between splinted and nonsplinted conditions with three wrist postures (30 degrees flexion, neutral, and 30 degrees extension) and four grip efforts. Custom-made Plexiglas splints were taped to the dorsum of the hand and wrist. It was found that when simply holding the dynamometer, use of a splint led to a small (<1% MVE) but significant reduction in activity for all flexor muscles and extensor carpi radialis (all activity <4% maximum). At maximal grip, extensor muscle activity was significantly increased with the splints by 7.9-23.9% MVE. These data indicate that splinting at low-to-moderate grip forces may act to support the wrist against external loading, but appears counterproductive when exerting maximal forces. Wrist bracing should be limited to periods of no to light activity and avoided during tasks that require heavy efforts.  相似文献

Eight men (20-23 years) weight trained 3 days.week-1 for 19 weeks. Training sessions consisted of six sets of a leg press exercise (simultaneous hip and knee extension and ankle plantar flexion) on a weight machine, the last three sets with the heaviest weight that could be used for 7-20 repetitions. In comparison to a control group (n = 6) only the trained group increased (P less than 0.01) weight lifting performance (heaviest weight lifted for one repetition, 29%), and left and right knee extensor cross-sectional area (CAT scanning and computerized planimetry, 11%, P less than 0.05). In contrast, training caused no increase in maximal voluntary isometric knee extension strength, electrically evoked knee extensor peak twitch torque, and knee extensor motor unit activation (interpolated twitch method). These data indicate that a moderate but significant amount of hypertrophy induced by weight training does not necessarily increase performance in an isometric strength task different from the training task but involving the same muscle group. The failure of evoked twitch torque to increase despite hypertrophy may further indicate that moderate hypertrophy in the early stage of strength training may not necessarily cause an increase in intrinsic muscle force generating capacity.  相似文献

This study evaluated the sport-specific characteristics of the cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of trunk muscles and trunk muscle strength in wrestlers and judokas. We also examined whether their trunk muscles and muscle strength depended on athletic performance levels in each sport. The subjects comprised 14 male collegiate wrestlers and 14 judokas. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess the trunk muscle CSAs at the L3-4 level parallel to the lumbar disc space. A Biodex System3 was used to measure isokinetic trunk flexor and extensor muscle strength of peak torque, work, average torque, and average power. The absolute and relative CSAs of the trunk muscles in the wrestlers and judokas were significantly different (rectus abdominis: wrestling > judo, P < 0.05; obliques: wrestling < judo, P < 0.05; quadratus lumborum: wrestling < judo, P < 0.01). We confirmed that the absolute and relative trunk extensor and flexor strength of peak torque, work, and average torque were significantly higher in the collegiate wrestlers than in judokas. On athletic performance, the tendency of the CSAs and muscular strength of trunk muscles was not consistent with athletic performance levels in each sport. Our findings indicated that the sport-specific characteristics of the CSAs of the trunk muscles and trunk muscle strength obviously differed between the 2 similar sports. Athletes should practice the sport-specific training of trunk muscles and develop sport specificity in their sports. Particularly, wrestlers have to train in trunk flexion and extension motions, and judokas need to strengthen trunk rotation and lateral flexion motions. This information will be available for athletes as well as strength and technical training coaches in wrestling, judo, and the other sports.  相似文献

We have tested the hypothesis that agonist and antagonist muscle fatigue could affect the final position of rapid, discrete movements. Six subjects performed consecutive elbow flexion and extension movements between two targets, with their eyes closed prior to, and after fatiguing the elbow extensor muscles. The results demonstrate that elbow extension movements performed in the post-test period systematically undershot the final position as compared to pre-test movements. However, attainment of the aimed final position in elbow flexion movements was unaffected by fatiguing of the extensor muscles. Undershoot of the final position obtained in extension movements was associated with agonist muscle fatigue, a result that was expected from the point of view of current motor control theories, and that could be explained by a reduced ability of the shortening muscle to exert force. On the other hand, the absence of the expected overshoot of the final position when the antagonist is fatigued, indicates the involvement of various reflex and/or central mechanisms operating around the stretched muscle that could contribute to returning the limb to the standard final position after a brief prominent overshoot.  相似文献

Summary Using chronically implanted suction electrodes (Fig. 2), records were obtained from the tonic abdominal flexor motor neurons of crayfish while they were undergoing various self-generated movements (Fig. 3). The main behavior examined in this study was one of abdominal extension (Fig. 1), a response which could be evoked repeatedly. Other stereotyped movements were also observed. Each class of behavior we examined has been evoked previously in dissected preparations by stimulating command interneurons, allowing comparison of selfgenerated and electrically evoked motor patterns.During abdominal extension, the flexor inhibitor neuron was observed to fire in a characteristic way (Fig. 4 left, Fig. 5) that was not materially altered even if the associated movements were prevented by rigid restraint (Fig. 4 right). These self-generated motor programs resembled those obtained from command fiber stimulation, both in detail and reproducibility, suggesting that the normal means of executing such stereotyped behavior in these animals is via selected command interneurons.Central reciprocity between the tonic flexor motor neurons and the flexor inhibitor was observed routinely in self-generated programs (Figs. 3, 6, 7), as was seen in dissected animals under command fiber control. The aim of this study was to assess differences of grip pattern and finger coordination in pianists and non-pianists, using hand tasks that were unrelated to pianistic practice. Eleven pianists with more than 10 years of intensive practice were compared to 14 non-pianists. Both groups performed four tasks with their right hand: (1) gross grip at fast velocity; (2) gross grip at slow velocity; (3) hook grip at fast velocity; and (4) hook grip at slow velocity. The three-dimensional coordinates were reconstructed using a kinematic analysis system, and the flexion and extension angles of the metacarpophalangeal joints were calculated. The phase diagrams were qualitatively and quantitatively appraised in order to identify differences between the groups. Principal component analysis was used to assess differences between pianists and non-pianists in terms of the reproducibility and regularity of palmar grip cycles. Coefficients of correlation between the joint angles were used to analyze finger coordination during the tasks. The pianists showed better reproducibility and regularity in the palmar grip pattern, as well as finger movements that were more coordinated when performing different hand tasks.  相似文献
