We investigated temporal and spatial patterns of distribution in two peritrich ciliates (i.e. Zoothamnium intermedium and Epistylis sp.) living as epibionts on calanoid copepods (i.e. Acartia tonsa and Eurytemora affinis) in Chesapeake Bay. Net tow samples collected along the main axis of the Bay were analyzed to estimate the occurrence of epibionts on copepods and to explore relationships among infestation prevalence, host abundance, and environmental variables. Zoothamnium intermedium and Epistylis sp. colonized populations of A. tonsa during spring and summer months, while only Z. intermedium colonized E. affinis during spring. Occurrence of epibionts on copepods showed high interannual variation, marked seasonality, and geographic heterogeneity. Extensive statistical analyses rejected simple scenarios of interactions between epibiosis, environmental variables, and host density, suggesting a more complex dynamics for the system. Analyses of epibiont colonies and zooids per host area (i.e. the sum of width and length of the body including antennae and swimming legs calculated assuming a cylindrical shape) were also performed. Overall, epibiont infestation prevalence (i.e. colonies/host area) and load (i.e. zooids/host area) were higher on copepodites than on adults for both host species, suggesting a preferential attachment to juveniles, or a higher predation pressure on adult stages. Infestation density and loads of both epibiont species were higher on the cephalothorax and abdomen of A. tonsa and E. affinis in comparison to the antennae and swimming legs, suggesting that ciliates can more easily colonize less active parts of the host.  相似文献

Peritrich ciliates are commonly found colonizing living substrates. Although this a well known phenomenon, biological aspects of this relationship need to be studied in more detail. Assessment of growth rates in peritrichs has been the subject of very few studies. Only species in the genera Carchesium Ehrenberg, 1830 and Vorticella Linnaeus, 1767 had their growth rates evaluated in the field and in the laboratory. In the present study, growth, colonization (colonies/host), and proliferation (zooids/colony) rates of the peritrich epibiont Zoothamnium intermedium Precht, 1935 attached to the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa Dana 1848 were evaluated in the laboratory in two food regimes: bacteria only, and algal based diet. Results showed that growth, colonization, and proliferation rates were similar for both diets. Maximum growth rates obtained for Z. intermedium was 0.85 and 0.83 per day, for bacteria and algae respectively. Maximum colonization rates were 0.5 per day for both diets, and the maximum proliferation rates were 0.44 and 0.42 per day for bacteria and algae respectively. These results demonstrate that Z. intermedium is able to grow at the same rate of other peritrichs on bacterial and algal based diets.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Sessile zooids, and mobile telotrochs and microgamonts of Carchesium polypinum (Protozoa, Ciliata, Peritrichia), were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The results were compared to earlier light and electron microscope studies in order to investigate structural changes concerned with adaptation and differentiation. Telotrochs and microgamonts always had a contracted peristome and usually had a long phalange of cilia. Striae around the contracted buccal apparatus in all 3 stages were convoluted and often had thickened margins; those in telotrochs and microgamonts had oral-aboral ectoplasmic cross-connections. Nonbuccal striae of telotrochs and microgamonts varied in structure and height differences between epiplasmic peaks and alveoli surface membranes. The number of striae were constant in all 3 stages. Pellicular pore structure did not vary in any of the stages examined and resembled parasomal sacs located near buccal structures. Fully relaxed sessile zooids had ectoplasmic ridges coursing from polykinety kinetosomes and cilia to an area in front of the ciliated portion of the haplokinety; these ridges were interpreted to be the interkinetal fibers. Telotroch bands of sessile zooids consisted of 2 or 3 parallel ectoplasmic ridges which circled the aboral region and contained structures resembling pores. Telotroch bands in telotrochs and microgamonts had 2 enlarged, parallel ectoplasmic ridges circling the aboral region; telotroch band cilia were found between these ridges. In addition, a fold-like, ectoplasmic structure extended beyond the 2 ridges and was located between the telotroch band cilia and the aboral ridge. The epiplasmic shelf surrounding the stalk in sessile zooids was enlarged in telotrochs, and cilia were seen in the scopula depression. No scopula organelle was seen in any microgamont.  相似文献

1. A clonal culture of the peritrich Epistylis pygmaeum was used for all observations and experiments. Motile cells preferentially attached to the eggs of three species of Brachionus but also attached to the body of adult B. angularis. Zooids on the transitory egg substratum developed only short stalks, while those on the body often developed long stalks and branched colonies. Selection for the eggs positions the ciliate near the cloaca, and thus high concentrations of fine particulate material excreted by the host. Settlement on eggs occurred equally well in the light and dark, and on moving and stationary eggs. 2. Motile Epistylis cells attached to a wide variety of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton, but exhibited some pronounced selectivity. They readily settled on the eggs of other rotifers (Epiphanes, Polyarthra), on the carapace of several cladocerans (Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia, Diaphanosoma), and on the egg sacs of a copepod (Tropocyclops). They settled less readily on the bodies of the rotifers Asplanchna and Synchaeta, and rarely or never settled on the rotifer Keratella, the cladocerans Bosmina and Scapholeberis, and the body of the copepod. 3. Epistylis populations initiated with a single zooid on Brachionus increased exponentially and often contained several hundred attached zooids and motile cells after 3 days at 20 °C. Observations of a culture initiated from a single telotroch provided new information about peritrich life cycles: (1) motile cells reproduced themselves at a rapid rate (λ = 4.26 day?1); (2) telotrochs produced or transformed into swimming zooids and vice versa. Functions of the two types of motile cells remain to be clarified. Telotrochs likely are specialised for finding and attaching to hosts. Swimming zooids can feed and reproduce, producing both their own cell type and telotrochs. Together, they should enhance dispersal and population growth, especially when hosts are rare. 4. Life‐table experiments with two species of Brachionus showed that colonisation by Epistylis had no effect on adult survival but significantly decreased fecundity, by 29% in both cases. Zooids attached to eggs could be a weight burden, increase drag, and possibly inhibit egg development. Those on the body of B. angularis also could interfere with coronal cilia, inhibiting feeding and further slowing locomotion. The ability of E. pygmaeum to select and then interfere with its hosts indicates that this epibiont has the potential to influence the species structure of zooplankton communities.  相似文献

探讨了辽宁盘锦辽河三角洲地区中华绒螯蟹(Eriocheir sinensis)生态育苗池中出现的近亲真宽水蚤(Eurytemor affinis)和细巧华哲水蚤(Sinocalanus tenellus)与中华绒螯蟹幼体的关系.结果表明:近亲真宽水蚤和细巧华哲水蚤都严重地影响Ⅰ期中华绒螯蟹溞状幼体的成活率,其密度越大,Ⅰ期溞状幼体的成活率就越低(P<0.01); Ⅲ期中华绒螯蟹溞状幼体可捕食桡足类无节幼体,且捕食量随着无节幼体密度增加而变大(P<0.01);Ⅴ期中华绒螯蟹溞状幼体和大眼幼体容易捕食到近亲真宽水蚤而很难捕食到细巧华哲水蚤;蟹苗池中大眼幼体的产量与育苗初期池塘中桡足类的数量呈负相关关系,且不同桡足类密度下大眼幼体收获量差异极显著(P<0.01).提出了控制和利用蟹苗池中桡足类的措施.  相似文献

Studies on cannibalism in harpacticoid copepods are restricted to predation on naupliar larvae in rock-pool harpacticoids of the genus Tigriopus. An earlier experimental study on the Mediterranean copepod Tigriopus fulvus indicated that females recognized their own larvae and preferentially preyed on nauplii other than their own. In a series of laboratory experiments, we tested if there were differences in naupliar predation as a function of crowding, food level and sex in Tigriopus brevicornis and T. fulvus. Results show that cannibalism was restricted to the first larval stages (N1 and N2). Both food availability and adult density significantly affected the predation rate. Contrary to earlier suggestions, adult males also preyed on the nauplii. We found no evidence that adults spare their own offspring, for neither T. fulvus nor T. brevicornis.This is in accordance with what one would expect for species having the life history characteristics of Tigriopus, i.e.: multiple broods and large number of offspring. Earlier results indicating parental care in Tigriopus must be taken with caution.  相似文献

A study of areal distribution of the copepod nauplii near mangrove covered cays on the barrier reef of Belize was begun in the summer of 1989 and continued in the spring of 1990 with the collection of twenty samples from four locations. At distances in the order of 100 of meters to 1000 from the mangrove prop roots there were thousands of nauplii m–3. In the samples from Twin Cays where the plankton tows were made 15 m from the prop roots or less the average was 387 nauplii m–3. Copepod nauplii compose 60% of the metazoan plankton abundance in all of the samples. Harpacticoid nauplii were the largest single component of the plankton in every sample; they account for 42% to 76% of the copepod nauplii. Cyclopoid nauplii represent 13 to 40% and are second to the harpacticoid nauplii. Calanoid nauplii account for 2% to 23% of the copepod nauplii.  相似文献

Various aspects of marine macroinvertebrate ecology cannot be understood without detailed knowledge of larval settlement processes. An important effect underscored during the settlement process is the disturbance of marine invertebrate larvae by predators. We demonstrated that biotic disturbance, comprising physical elimination and mortality due to predation and the behavioral irritation of larvae by the harpacticoid copepod Tisbe japonica, prevent a significant portion of larvae of the polychaete Hydroides elegans from settlement on otherwise suitable substrata. Experiments were performed both in the laboratory and the field showing reproducible significant differences in larval settlement and mortality rates between gender-specific copepod treatments and the control. The trend of decreased larval settlement in the presence of copepods coincided with increased larval mortality in these treatments. In the corresponding field experiments, larval settlement and mortality were similar to the ones obtained under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

This study examined the diet composition, feeding preferences, and mouth morphology of the silver therapon (Leiopotherapon plumbeus, Kner 1864) larvae under captive conditions. Larvae were reared in outdoor tanks (4 m3) with natural food grown 2 weeks prior to start of larval rearing. Food preference was measured by the Chesson's electivity index (αi). Gut content analysis of larvae sampled between 5 and 25 days after hatching (DAH) showed the dominance in the diet by zooplankton, mainly copepod nauplii, cladocerans and insect larvae. Small fish larvae (5–9 DAH; 3.32–6.29 mm standard length) preferred cladocerans, ciliates and copepod nauplii; whereas older larvae (12–25 DAH; 5.45–19.26 mm standard length) preferred insect larvae over cladocerans and adult insects. The mouth gape size at 5 DAH was 359 μm and increased to 3.75 mm at 40 DAH when body size grew at an average rate of 0.59 mm d?1. The standard length (SL) of L. plumbeus larvae was strongly associated with mouth size (r2 = 0.98, P < 0.05), indicating a progressive increase of ingested prey size of the fish larvae. These results clarified the early life feeding ecology of this species, which is essential in developing effective hatchery techniques.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A method is described for obtaining large numbers of telotrochs from mass cultures of Vorticella convallaria . These free-swimming cells contract slightly along the aboral-oral plane when extracted with Triton X-100, and thus appear more similar in shape to zooids than unextracted telotrochs. Cytoskeletal structures associated with feeding, such as the infudibulum and the cytopharynx, are visible in cytoskeletal preparations of these non-feeding telotrochs and thus appear not to be disassembled during telotroch formation. The telotroch to stalked-zooid transition proceeds rapidly through a set series of morphogenetic stages. After telotroch attachment, the aboral cilia cease beating and are resorbed. Within 7 min the cell is inverted bell-shaped and the zooid begins feeding. Stalk elongation begins about 15–20 min after attachment, lengthening at the rate of 0.5 μ/min for the first hour and more slowly (0.1 μm/min) after that. Interestingly, these developmental stages are essentially the same as those described for the telotroch to zooid transition in the colonial peritrich Zoothamnium . This evolutionary conservation suggests that the precise sequence and timing of these events are critical for their successful completion. Furthermore, the facts that the telotroch to zooid transition occurs very rapidly, that the feeding structures are maintained throughout the transformation, and that basic cytoskeletal architecture is relatively unchanged is consistent with the hypothesis that the transformation occurs through controlled cytoskeletal rearrangements rather than by changes in gene expression.  相似文献

The copepod Mesocyclops aspericornis Daday and the larvivorous fishes Gambusia affinis (B. & G.) and Poecilia reticulata R. & B., were released into mosquito breeding sites in Tuherahera village, Tikehau atoll, French Polynesia, to control larvae of Aedes aegypti (L.), Ae.polynesiensis Marks, Culex annulirostris Skuse and Cx quinquefasciatus Say. Treatments were completed within a week, in January 1990. Fish quickly eliminated mosquito larvae from the open breeding sites (ponds, wells). The impact of copepods in water tanks, drums and covered wells was inconsistent, apparently depending on the availability of microfaunal diet for growth of copepod nauplii. As the biting rate of adult Ae.aegypti seemed to be unaffected by the biological control of larvae, this village-scale experiment was judged to be unsuccessful as a means of vector control.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. We examined by SEM and TEM the stalk-scopular junction, the stalk, and stalk formation in Vorticella convallaria Linnaeus, 1767. The stalk sheath is anchored to the walls of the scopular lip and to the scopular cilia by thin fibrils. Experimental extraction of these fibrils weakens this junction enough to separate the stalk from the cell body. Telotrochs escape from the stalk by means of violent contractions of the cell body, accelerated beating of the trochal band cilia, and twisting of the cell body against the stalk. The edges of the scopular lip spread over the scopular cilia after escape and, in some cases, fuse to enclose the entire, aboral scopular surface in a cupola-like structure. The sessile cells contain fewer and smaller scopular granules than telotrochs. The presence of disintegrating scopular granules in the stalk matrix of some sessile cells suggests that they contain material which is secreted over a period of time to form the stalk. Eruptive formation of the initial adhesive pad and quick elongation of the distal part of the stalk suggests a rapid exocytosis of the larger, more numerous granules of the telotroch. The stalk sheath is formed of fibrils making up complete and incomplete compartments peripherally arranged along the major stalk axis.  相似文献

Five species of the loricate genus Lagenophrys were found on freshwater hosts and are described for the first time. Lagenophrys dennisi n. sp., L. incompta n. sp., and L. oregonensis n. sp. are ectosymbionts of astacid crayfish. Lagenophrys foxi n. sp and L. missouriensis n. sp. are ectosymbionts of gammarid amphipods. All five species appear to occur only m North America. Protargol preparations of the five species reveal that the peristomial myoneme is much broader and more extensive in telotrochs and metamorphosing individuals than in adults. Darkly staining bands appearing to be somatic myonemes were also seen underneath the surface of the body and in the center of the body of telotrochs and metamorphosing individuals. The telotroch of Lagenophrys is so different from the adult that it constitutes a true larval form rather than a simple dispersal stage. Structural parallels between the telotroch of Lagenophrys and mobiline peritrichs suggest the hypothesis that mobilines evolved from the telotroch of a sessiline pentrich which had first evolved into a true larval form.  相似文献

Synopsis We studied the ontogenetic diet shift and prey electivity of an endangered cyprinodontid fish endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus). The toothcarp’s diet was omnivorous, dominated by harpacticoid copepods (Mesochra lilljeborgi and Tisbe longicornis), copepod nauplii and detritus. Diet composition varied greatly among habitats, depending on prey availability. In a rarely inundated habitat (glasswort), there was more consumption of the isopod Protracheoniscus occidentalis and the harpacticoid copepod Mesochra lilljeborgi, while in algal mats another harpacticoid (Tisbe longicornis), chironomid dipterans and invertebrate eggs were more important in diet. Although a benthic feeding habitat has previously been suggested, in our study the diet was based rather on water column organisms for both glasswort and algal mat habitats. There was also an ontogenetic diet shift, with an increase of mean prey length with fish length, clearly linked to a microhabitat change. Smaller fish showed positive electivity and greater reliance on planktonic prey (e.g. copepod nauplii, the harpacticoid copepods Mesochra lilljeborgi and Tisbe longicornis, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, and ostracods), while larger fish elected and preyed on more benthic organisms (e.g. Canuella perplexa, Mesochra rapiens, and ephydrid dipterans).  相似文献

ABSTRACT We have devised a two step method for the synchronous induction of telotrochs in the peritrich ciliate, Vorticella convallaria. The method is easy, reliable, and allows us to study the earliest events of telotroch formation at the ultrastructural, biochemical, and molecular levels. The steps involved are: (1) excising the cell body from the stalk in a large population (7.4 times 104 cells) of EDTA-treated, attached cells by the application of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate solution at pH 3.2, (2) rinsing and suspending the isolated cell bodies in inorganic medium. Within 90 min, 80% of the population forms telotrochs. Analysis of factors that are important for maximum stalk excision and transformation shows that the population must not be older than 2 d and the most effective concentration of monocalcium phosphate is 4.8 mM for a 20 min exposure. The most effective monocalcium phosphate is in the monohydrated form. A pH value of 3.2, produced by the addition of hydrochloric acid in the presence or absence of calcium is not sufficient to initiate stalk excision and telotroch formation. This observation leads us to conclude that stalk excision is dependent on monocalcium phosphate or its hydrolysis products.  相似文献

The distributions and abundances of copepod and barnacle naupliiare described along a five-station transect in the Irish Seafrom Liverpool Bay, England, to Dundalk Bay, Ireland, in May1989. Correspondence analysis revealed that various hydrographicregions in the Irish Sea are characterized by distinct naupliusassemblages. Acartia, Centropages and Temora nauplii were associatedwith the Welsh coastal water east of the Liverpool Bay front.The western stratified water to the west of the seasonal, westernIrish Sea front was distinguished from the mixed water to theeast by abundances of Calanus, Pseudocalanus, Oithona, Microcalanusand harpacticoid nauplii. The Liverpool Bay and western IrishSea fronts are, apparently, boundaries between coastal and offshoreassemblages of crustacean nauplii.  相似文献

Feeding ecology of white perch Morone americana larvae, a major component of the ichthyoplankton community in the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) region of upper Chesapeake Bay, was evaluated in years of contrasting physical conditions. In 1998, high river flow led to an ETM with high turbidity and pronounced salinity stratification. In 1999, under low river flow conditions, turbidities in the ETM region were lower and the salt front was located 15 km up‐stream of its location in 1998. Copepodites and adults of Eurytemora affinis were the predominant prey in guts of all length classes of larvae (3·2–9·8 mm standard length, L S) that were examined. Repeated‐measures, multiple regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of several factors on feeding success by determining if physical conditions (temperature, current velocity, salinity, turbidity and light) and prey concentrations explained variability in mean gut fullness (gut contents mass per body mass) of small (<5 mm L S) and large (>5 mm L S) white perch larvae. Eurytemora affinis concentrations were significant in the statistical models for both small and large larvae. High concentrations of E. affinis , which enhanced encounter rates of white perch larvae with prey, may have been the most important factor determining feeding success in the ETM region. Larval feeding incidence (percentage of guts with food) was higher in 1998, suggesting that annual variability in river flow influenced larval feeding success by controlling physical and biological conditions in the ETM region.  相似文献

Crustaceans are important hosts for a number of helminth parasites, and they are increasingly used as models for studying the physiology, ecology and evolution of parasite-host interactions. In ecological studies, this interaction is commonly described only in terms of prevalence and number of larvae per infected host. However, the volume of helminth parasites can vary greatly, and this variation can potentially give important insights into the nature of a parasite-host relationship. It may influence and be influenced, for example, by within-host competition, host size, growth, and life history. Here we present a simple method that allows rapid approximation of the absolute and relative volumes of cestode larvae within copepod hosts of various developmental stages (nauplii, copepodites and adults). The measurements are taken in vivo without much disturbance of the animals, i.e. the technique allows study of growth and development of the parasites in relation to that of their hosts. The principles of this technique can be adopted to other helminth parasites and other crustacean hosts. Using this method in the copepod Macrocyclops albidus infected with the cestode Schistocephalus solidus, we found that the relative parasite size (= `parasite index') ranged from 0.5% to 6.5% of host size 14 days after infection. It was greater in male than in female hosts. With increasing number of parasites per host, the total parasite volume increased while the mean volume of the individual parasites decreased. The magnitude of the observed parasite indices, the large variation that was found within a sample of 46 infected adult copepods, and the observed correlates suggest that this new index can indeed be an important measure of parasite success and its pathogenecity.  相似文献

Udonella caligorum is acknowledged as a monogenean by some (Baer & Euzet, 1961; Yamaguti, 1963), but not by others (Ivanov, 1952; Bychowsky, 1957). It also has many similarities to Temnocephala, a rhabdocoel turbellarian. Light and electron microscope studies showed that the posterior sucker is glandular and that neither the adult nor eggs possess hooks; the head-gland secretion is eosinophilic and granular, and the tegument composed primarily of secretory granules and mitochondria. Ten pair of cells appearing to be paranephrocytes are present. Udonella larvae were shown to be larger than the host copepod nauplii, so transmission of worms between hosts must occur either during host mating, casual contact of hosts, or through free worms on the surface of the fish which the copepod infests.  相似文献
