Life history traits play an important role in population dynamics and correlate, both positively and negatively, with dispersal in a wide range of taxa. Most invertebrate studies on trade-offs between life history traits and dispersal have focused on dispersal via flight, yet much less is known about how life history trade-offs influence species that disperse by other means. In this study, we identify effects of investing in dispersal morphology (dispersal expression) on life history traits in the male dimorphic bulb mite (Rhizoglyphus robini). This species has a facultative juvenile life stage (deutonymph) during which individuals can disperse by phoresy. Further, adult males are either fighters (which kill other mites) or benign scramblers. Here, in an experiment, we investigate the effects of investing in dispersal on size at maturity, sex and male morph ratio, and female lifetime reproductive success. We show that life history traits correlate negatively with the expression of the dispersal stage. Remarkably, all males that expressed the dispersal life stage developed into competitive fighters and none into scramblers. This suggests that alternative, male reproductive strategies and dispersal should not be viewed in isolation but considered concurrently.  相似文献

We tested the capacity of the soil-dwelling predatory mite, Hypoapsis aculeifer , to control mites attacking lily bulbs. Experiments in the greenhouse and in the field showed that in the absence of predatory mites populations of the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini , on lily bulbs increased, whereas the release of predatory mites either slowed down the increase - as observed in the field - or caused the bulb mites populations to decrease - as observed in the greenhouse. In all cases the population of predatory mites increased as long as bulb mite densities were not too low. However, within the first week after predator release there was usually a sharp decline to 10-40% of the original number released. Greenhouse experiments on intact lily bulbs in pots, boxes and 1 m 2 plots with peat soil showed that when released in a ratio of 1 predator to 2 or 5 prey, the predatory mite, Hypoaspis aculeifer , suppressed populations of bulb mites to less than 10 individual per bulb within 6 weeks. Elimination of bulb mites was observed only when the predator-to-prey ratio at release was equal to 3:1. Field experiments in 2 m 2 plots with intact bulbs in rather compact sandy soil showed that when released in ratio of 1 predator to 1 or 2 prey, the predatory mite, H. aculeifer , did not cause the population of bulb mites to decrease, but it did reduce their population growth. The initial predator-to-prey ratios required to achieve suppression (ca 1:2) or elimination (3:1) in the soil environment are much higher than those required for bulb mite elimination when lily bulb scales were embedded in a medium of vermiculite (ca 1:20). Among the possible causes are: (1) the initial losses of predators in the greenhouse and even more so in the field due to mortality and/or emigration from the experimental plots; (2) the lower temperatures in the greenhouse and especially in the field, which slow down the growth and predation processes and thereby delay prey extinction; and (3) the spatial complexity of the soil environment which creates refuges for the bulb mites.  相似文献

Multiple mating by females has been proposed to function as a form of mate-choice, which implies that males should show heritable variation in sperm-competitive abilities. In this study, repeatability and heritability of sperm competition success was estimated in the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini. Fertilization success of males was estimated in competition with sperm of two other males. Males differed consistently in their sperm competition success, with repeatability estimated at 0.22. The heritability of sperm competition success was estimated using parent-offspring regression, with the mean fertilization success from two matings used as a measure of each male's competitive ability. There was a significant association between the sperm competition success of fathers and sons. Narrow sense heritability (h2) was 0.284. This result supports the hypotheses proposing the multiple mating is selectively maintained in females by enhancing the reproductive success of their progeny.  相似文献

The extent of induction of aldrin epoxidation and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini was dependent on the ingested plant material or on the type of inducer. GST was strongly induced in mites fed on garlic or exposed to trans-stilbene oxide as well as by the pesticides fenpropathrin and propoxur. Several phytochemicals such as 3-indoleacetonitrile, flavone, chalcone and pulegone were potent GST inducers stimulating the enzyme activity by 2–4-fold. Other toxicants, pesticides and allelochemicals yielded moderate to slight stimulation and a few were even inhibitory. In general, aldrin epoxidation was moderately stimulated by plant materials and xenobiotics. The epoxidation activity was increased in mites fed on garlic and carrot, or exposed to toxicants such as pentobarbital and -hexachlorocyclohexane, pesticides like chlordimeform, propoxur, carbaryl and lindane, as well as allelochemicals such as flavone, ß-carotene, indole-3-carbinol and safrole. The relevance of the study vis-à-vis adaptation of herbivorous arthropods to their habitats and acquirement of tolerance to chemical control agents, is discussed.  相似文献

In several species of Acaridae (Astigmata), heteromorphic males, possessing a sharply terminated third pair of legs which they use to mortally stab other males, coexist with scrambler males with unmodified legs. Previous research showed that in the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini (Claparède), the male morph is heritable. In this study I used a different population and carried out selection in both downward and upward direction in order to change the proportion of morphs. Starting from the proportion of about 0.2 homeomorphs in the population, I obtained a significant response to 8–10 generations of selection in two repetitions. The response was asymmetrical (stronger in upward direction). Realised heritabilities were in the range of 0.3 (downward) and 0.8 (upward).  相似文献

Two basic male morphs occur in several species of the family Acaridae: heteromorphic fighters, possessing a thickened and sharply terminated third pair of legs, and homeomorphic males with unmodified legs. We compared major life-history traits of the two morphs in the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini. We found no significant differences in development time or virility, but homeomorphic males lived 23% longer than heteromorphs. We discuss the possibility that the trade-off between longevity and adaptation for fighting maintains genetic variation for the male morph in the studied species.  相似文献

4,21-Secovincanol ( 1 ), a novel C-21/N-4 cleavage monoterpenoid indole alkaloid, along with four analogs ( 2 – 5 ), were obtained from the aerial parts of Kopsia hainanensis. Structurally, compound 1 might be a derivative of epivincanol ( 2 ) via C-21/N-4 cleavage. Their structures were confirmed by means of comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis and comparison with the reported data. All isolates significantly inhibited Con A-stimulated mice splenocytes proliferation at 10–40 μM in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. Especially, compound 3 exhibited potent activities comparable to positive control (Dexamethasone, DXM).  相似文献

An esterase isolated from Penicillium frequentans IMI 92265 selectively hydrolyses the acetoxyethyl ester in preference to the acetoxymethyl esters in the triacetate substrate 1,4-diacetoxy-2-acetoxymethylbutane (1) which was converted to 4-acetoxy-3-acetoxymethylbutan-l-ol (2) in good yield. The enzyme gave no detectable hydrolysis of l,3-diacetoxy-2-acetoxymethylpropane (4). When immobilised to a cyanogen bromide activated Sepharose resin the enzyme was highly stable and showed no loss of regioselectivity in the hydrolysis of (1). A method is described for the elective isolation of microorganisms which have the ability to hydrolyse (1).  相似文献

Alternative reproductive phenotypes (ARPs) occur across a wide range of taxa. Most ARPs are conditionally expressed in response to a cue, for example body size, that reliably correlates with the status of the environment: individuals below the (body size) threshold then develop into one morph, and individuals above the threshold develop into the alternative morph. The environmental threshold model provides a theoretical framework to understand the evolution and maintenance of such ARPs, yet no study has examined the underlying fitness functions that are necessary to realize this. Here, we empirically examined fitness functions for the two male morphs of the bulb mite (Rhizoglyphus robini). Fitness functions were derived in relation to male size for solitary males and in relation to female size under competition. In both cases, the fitness functions of the two morphs intersected, and the resulting fitness trade-offs may play a role in the maintenance of this male dimorphism. We furthermore found that competition was strongest between males of the same morph, suggesting that fitness trade-off in relation to male size may persist under competition. Our results are a first step towards unravelling fitness functions of ARPs that are environmentally cued threshold traits, which is essential for understanding their maintenance and in explaining the response to selection against alternative morphs.  相似文献

The study was carried out to assess whether bovine milk whey and its products fermented by lactic acid bacteria could ameliorate the lipid peroxidation of hepatic mitochondria associated with cholestatic liver injury due to bile duct ligation. Rats were maintained on one of five diets for 3 weeks before being operated upon and killed 3 weeks after bile duct ligation. The diets included one deficient in vitamin E (control diet) and others supplemented with either 5% milk whey or 5% milk whey fermented with Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum), Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus), and Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophillus (S. thermophillus). Bile duct-ligated rats, compared with sham-operated rats, had higher organ weights (liver and spleen), higher serum alkaline phosphatase activity, higher serum bilirubin concentration, and higher content of hepatic mitochondrial lipid hydroperoxide. The rats fed on diets containing milk whey fermented with B. longum ameliorated the elevation of organ weights, enzyme activity, bilirubin concentration, and content of mitochondrial lipid hydroperoxide. Milk whey and milk whey fermented with L. acidophilus and S. thermophillus also suppressed the elevation of mitochondrial lipid hydroperoxide, but had no ameliorating effects on organ weights, enzyme activity, and bilirubin concentration. The elevation of serum lipid hydroperoxide was ameliorated in rats fed on diets containing milk whey and milk whey fermented with B. longum and S. thermophillus. The reduction in plasma α-tocopherol due to bile duct ligation was ameliorated in those rats fed on diets containing milk whey fermented with B. longum as well as by S. themophillus. These results suggest that a milk whey fermented with lactic acid bacteria exerts a beneficial effect on free radical-mediated hepatic injury.  相似文献

以我室自行分离的对鳞翅目夜蛾科害虫具有高毒力的Bt菌株B-Pr-88为材料,用PCR-RFLP方法从其质粒DNA文库中筛选到含cry2Ab基因的一个阳性克隆pZF858,序列测定发现,该片段含有cry2Ab全长基因,开放读码框为1902bps,编码由633个氨基酸组成的70.7kD蛋白,氨基酸同源性与已公布的cry2Ab基因同源性均为99.8%,经Bt基因国际命名委员会正式命名为cry2Ab4。根据cry2Ab4基因开放阅读框架(ORF)两端序列,设计合成一对特异引物L2ab5和L2ab3,PCR扩增获得cry2Ab4完整ORF,与大肠杆菌表达载体pET-21b连接,构建了重组表达质粒pET-2Ab4,质粒导入大肠杆菌BL21(DE3),IPTG诱导后,SDS-PAGE电泳证实该基因表达了60kD的蛋白,生物测定表明,Cry2Ab4对棉铃虫和大豆食心虫具有高毒力,同时对小菜蛾和二化螟有一定的杀虫活性,而对亚洲玉米螟和甜菜夜蛾没有杀虫活性。  相似文献

We studied fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two generations of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini . We used Procrustes analyses, which allow the comparison of dimensionless shapes of body sides. We found little (<4%) directional asymmetry in either sex. Of the two morphs occurring in this species, fighters, which possess a thickened third pair of legs, exhibited higher FA than did scramblers, the morph with unmodified legs; this may reflect the costliness of the fighter developmental pathway. There was a negative relationship between FA and female fecundity, but the regression slope of mid-offspring on mid-parent FA was not significantly greater than zero. We propose that heritability estimates can be biased downwards if highly asymmetric individuals produce fewer viable offspring. However, we found no significant association between parental FA and the proportion of viable embryos in their broods. Furthermore, we hypothesized that parental FA might indicate the presence of largely recessive mutations deleterious to developmental homeostasis that would cause increased embryo mortality under inbreeding. The discovery of new highly active molecules from natural products is a common method to create new pesticides. Celangulin V targeting Mythimna separate (M. separate) midgut V-ATPase H subunit, has received considerable attention for its excellent insecticidal activity and unique mechanism of action. Therefore, combined with our preliminary work, thirty-seven sulfonamide derivatives bearing propargyloxy or pyridine groups were systematically synthesized to search for insecticidal candidate compounds with low cost and high efficiency on the H subunit of V-ATPase. Bioactive results showed that compounds A2-A4 and A6-A7 exhibited a better bioactivity with median effective concentration (LC50) values (2.78, 3.11, 3.34, 3.54 and 2.48 mg/mL, respectively) against third-instar larvae of M. separate than Celangulin V (LC50=18.1 mg/mL). Additionally, molecular docking experiments indicated that these molecules may act on the H subunit of V-ATPase. Based on the above results, these compounds provide new ideas for the discovery of insecticides.  相似文献

Using a continuous exposure technique, the toxicity of 35 compounds to the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus echinopus (Fumouze and Robin) was examined after 48 h. Sixteen acaricides yielded an LC50 of <1.0 mg cm2. The highest toxicity was exhibited by cyclodiene GABA antagonists (dieldrin, endrin and aldrin), some organophosphate (chlorpyrifos, diazinon and azinphosethyl) and carbamate (carbofuran) anticholinesterases and a thiazolidine flubenzimine. Oxythioquinox, fenazaflor, fenazaquin and amitraz were less toxic than the cyclodienes, organophosphates and carbamates. The sodium channel agonists (DDT and pyrethroids) and several specific acaricides with other modes of action were inactive (LC50 >11.0 mg cm-2).  相似文献

A concise synthesis of valerena-4,7(11)-diene with potent sedative activity was achieved in three steps involving, reduction of carboxylic acid, bromination of the resulting alcohol, and reduction of the bromide from valerenic acid in a 63% total yield. Twenty bacteria were isolated from four ant lion larvae. The isolates were classified into three groups by biological characteristics. Since Group I, Group II and Group III were isolated from individual larvae Kuo1, Kuo3, 4 and Kuo2, respectively, with exception of one isolate Kuo2‐1, each ant lion tested had its own dominant bacterial flora. Groups I and II were closer to Serratia liquefaciens and Enterobacter cloacae, respectively, whereas Group III could not be identified by the test used. The phylogenetic analysis of GroEL amino acid sequences revealed that Group I, II and III were related to those of Serratia spp., E. cloacae and Salmonella spp. –Escherichia/Shigella spp., respectively. Among these groups, Group I was highly virulent against Bombyx mori and Periplaneta americana, and caused 100% mortality within 24 h. The other two groups (Group II and III) were avirulent to these insect species. The culture filtrate of Group I caused killing activity to B. mori larvae and the insecticidal substance was purified from culture filtrate of Group I bacterium. Since the insecticidal activity highly correlated with proteolytic activity in the chromatographies, Group I bacterium may secret insecticidal proteinase in vitro.  相似文献

[目的]本研究的目的是分析从四川生态条件下分离的苏云金芽胞杆菌Rpp39菌株的特性,从分子水平上揭示该菌株对鳞翅目高毒力的原因;进一步从中分离克隆cry2Aa基因,并对其进行初步的表达研究.[方法]本研究主要采用扫描电镜观察、PCR-RFLP鉴定法和SDS-PAGE分析法研究菌株的特性;采用PCR直接克隆法克隆cry2Aa全长基因,并亚克隆到原核表达载体pET-30a中,构建重组表达质粒pET-2Aa,再转入受体菌E.coli.BL21(DE3)中进行诱导表达;采用室内生物测定法测定表达产物对小菜蛾和水稻二化螟的毒力.[结果]经扫描电镜观察菌株Rpp39主要产生菱形、方形和圆形3种伴胞晶体;SDS-PAGE分析表明主要产生130 kDa和60 kDa左右2种蛋白;经PCR-RFLP鉴定,该菌株含有cry1Aa、cry1Ab、cry1Ac、cry1Ia和cry2Aa五类杀虫晶体蛋白基因;1种cry2Aa类杀虫晶体蛋白全长基因被克隆,序列分析显示该基因的开放阅读框(ORF)为1902 bps,编码由634个氨基酸组成的蛋白质,氨基酸序列与Cry2Aa1蛋白同源性为99.7%,被国际Bt杀虫晶体蛋白基因命名委员会命名为cry2Aa12.重组表达质粒pET-2Aa在E.coli BL21(DE3)中,经IPTG诱导能正常表达,SDS-PAGE电泳验证含有65 kDa表达蛋白.生物活性测定表明表达的包涵体蛋白对小菜蛾和二化螟具有杀虫活性,LC50分别为5.4 μg/mL和22.3μg/mL.[结论]菌株Rpp39及从中分离克隆的cry2Aa12基因来自四川生态条件,丰富了菌株及基因的资源,在资源积累方面具有重要意义.  相似文献

By a screening program searching for new pesticides from fungal sources, an insecticidal compound was isolated from Penicillium citrinum F 1539. The compound, named quinolactacide, was novel and showed 88% mortality against green peach aphids (Myzus persicae) at 250 ppm. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic techniques.  相似文献
