Electric membrane properties and motor behaviour of two Antarctic and two middle-latitude species of Euplotes were compared. Membrane potential fluctuations and whole-cell currents were measured using the whole cell clamp. The electrical properties of both of the Antarctic species between themselves and of both of the middle-latitude species are nearly identical. Furthermore, after warming up to 22°C, the Antarctic species grown at 4°C show the same pattern of spontaneous potential fluctuations, induced potential oscillations and membrane currents as the middle-latitude species grown and measured at 22°C. After cooling down to 4°C, the middle-latitude species grown at 22°C show the same electrical properties as the Antarctic species grown and measured at 4°C. The congruence of the temperature-dependent electrical properties in Euplotes species from completely different habitats is presumably based on a universal mechanism of temperature dependence of ionic conductances, indicating the close physiological relationship among the species. Wood properties were measured for trees in lowland dipterocarp forests in West Kalimantan. In 1993 and 1994, 353 samples of 286 species were collected from trunk base of trees of approximately 5 cm in diameter, and the specific gravities (SG: oven dry weight/fresh volume) and water contents of wood including bark were measured. The SG of each species ranged from 0.21 to 0.84, and the mean ± SD was 0.53 ± 0.13. The wide range of SG suggests that the forest had a high diversity in wood properties. The most dominant and diversified genus in this area was Shorea, and the SG of 15 species varied from 0.21 to 0.71. The range covered SG of pioneer (six Macaranga, 0.29–0.43) and small trees in primary forests (nine Eugenia and 10 Xanthophyllum, 0.55–0.77). The SG average for tree species of secondary forests of 2–6 years old was 0.31. It was significantly smaller than that of primary forests (0.58). In a primary dipterocarp forest plot, light-wood species grew faster in diameter than heavy-wood species. Water content ranged from 0.26 to 0.76. Heavy wood had low water content. Among light-wood species, some (Shorea, Artocarpus) had low water contents and others (Ficus) had high water contents. Some riverine trees also had high water contents. These wood properties appear strongly related to the life history of trees and successional stage.  相似文献

Twenty-two isolates belonging to group F of Lee, Donovan, and Furniss were submitted to an extensive phenotypic characterization. The results of a numerical analysis of the data indicated that this group consisted of two biotypes which were phenotypically distinct from 22 previously characterized species ofBeneckea andPhotobacterium as well as from 3 species ofvibrio. The guanine-plus-cytosine content in the DNAs from 8 strains of group F was found to be 50.8±0.2 mol%. A set of 10 readily determinable phenotypic properties was proposed for the differentiation of strains of group F from other related species.  相似文献

The seasonal variability in the extraction yield, physicochemical characteristics, and rheological properties of ulvan from two Ulva species contributing to Brittany “green tides” has been studied. These seaweeds were collected in the water column for Ulva armoricana Dion, de Reviers et Coat and on hard substrata for Ulva rotundata Bliding. The maximum ulvan extraction efficiency was not related to the maximum ulvan content in the seaweeds, but with the active growth period of the seaweeds. Ulvan chemical structure, macromolecular characteristics, and rheological properties were affected by both species and seasons. The proportion of high‐molecular‐weight ulvan was the major factor positively correlated with the gelling properties. Characteristics of ulvan from U. rotundata subjected to tides were more affected by seasons than ulvan from U. armoricana living in a more constant environment. These results point to several useful recommendations concerning Ulva sp. biomass collected with regard to ulvan characteristics and uses.  相似文献

Extracts of 15 species of lichen were tested for antifeedant properties against the field slug Deroceras reticulation (Müller) (Mollusca: Pulmonata). All but three showed some activity and two of these were from endolithic species. The most effective extract was from Letharia vulpina. The major active compound from this species, vulpinic acid, was tested for dose response, applied as a foliar spray to turnip plants and as a dressing to wheat seeds in laboratory experiments. It provided effective protection against slug feeding under these conditions.  相似文献

A survey of 17 species of Caulerpa showed peroxidase activity to be widespread in this genus. The intracellular location of the activity varied in different species, but only in C. cliftoni Harvey was it associated with wound plugs. In eight species peroxidase activity was present in the branching points of the trabeculae and in 12 of the 17 species it was found in the cell wall or in the trabeculae adjacent to the cell wall. Peroxidase was isolated from one species, C. simpliciuscula C. Ag., and some of its properties examined. Two isoenzymes were present, both of them different from the peroxidase isolated from Batophora oerstedii J. Agardh and Cymopolia barbata L.  相似文献

Biosystematic studies on novel streptomycetes from soil   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Members of three putatively novel Streptomyces species, designated Streptomyces groups A, B and C, were repeatedly isolated from environmental samples taken from four hay meadow plots at Cockle Park Experimental Farm, Northumberland (UK). Representative isolates were found to have properties consistent with their classification in the genus Streptomyces and were recovered in three taxa using different phenotypic criteria, namely morphological and pigmentation properties, rapid enzyme tests, and whole-organism fatty acid, protein electrophoretic and pyrolysis mass-spectrometric data. The isolates were rapidly characterised as three taxonomic groups using pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The three taxa were also distinguished from one another and from validly described species of Streptomyces using rapid enzyme tests based on the fluorophores 7-amino-methylcoumarin and 4-methylumbelliferone, and computer-assisted identification procedures. The results indicate that selective isolation and rapid characterisation of streptomycetes using pyrolysis mass spectrometry provide a practical way of determining the phenotypic species diversity of streptomycetes in natural habitats. The experimental data also indicate that representative sampling of cultivable streptomycetes from soil can best be achieved using a multi-step extraction procedure coupled with the use of selective isolation procedures.  相似文献

We hypothesised that plant species composition and richness would affect soil chemical and microbial community properties, and that these in turn would affect soil microbial resistance and resilience to an experimentally imposed drying disturbance. We performed a container experiment that manipulated the composition and species richness of common pasture plant species (Trifolium repens, Lolium perenne, and Plantago lanceolata) by growing them in monoculture, and in all the possible two and three-way combinations, along with an unplanted control soil. Experimental units were harvested at four different times over a 16-month period to determine the effect of plant community development and seasonal changes in temperature and moisture on belowground properties. Results showed that plant species composition influenced soil chemistry, soil microbial community properties and soil microbial resistance and resilience. Soil from planted treatments generally showed reduced soil microbial resistance to drying compared to unplanted control soils. Soils from under T. repens showed a higher resistance and resilience than the soils from under P. lanceolata, and a higher resistance than soils from under L. perenne. We suggest that differences across soils in either resource limitation or soil microbial community structure may be responsible for these results. Plant species richness rarely affected soil microbial community properties or soil microbial resistance and resilience, despite having some significant effects on plant community biomass and soil nitrogen contents in some harvests. The effect that treatments had for most variables differed between harvests, suggesting that results can be altered by the stage of plant community development or by extrinsic environmental factors that varied with harvest timing. These results in combination show that soil microbial resistance and resilience was affected by plant community composition, and the time of measurement, but was largely unrelated to plant species richness.  相似文献

基于长期定位监测数据,量化揭示了红锥纯林(Castanopsis hystrix)、10种与30种乡土树种混交林等3种乡土人工林植物群落的生物量、物种多样性、生物热力学健康水平(eco-exergy)和土壤理化性状在种植后13年内的发展动态,并与尾叶桉(Eucalyptus urophylla)纯林,以及自然恢复系统(灌草坡)进行了比较。结果表明:(1)研究期间,5种恢复模式的植物群落生物量均呈现波动上升趋势,但在发展节率上有所差异。13龄时的尾叶桉纯林与两种乡土树种混交林生物量显著高于其各自1龄时的水平,且显著高于自然恢复灌草坡;相较于其他人工林,红锥纯林生物量增长缓慢,但快于灌草坡;(2)5种恢复模式植物群落的物种多样性(物种丰富度、Shannon-Wiener指数、Pielou均匀度指数)在6至13龄间均呈下降趋势,且30种乡土树种混交林下降趋势最为显著。13龄时,两种混交林Shannon-Wiener指数略高于两种纯林,显著高于灌草坡;10种乡土树种混交林的Pielou均匀度指数略高于红锥纯林与30种乡土树种混交林,显著高于尾叶桉纯林与灌草坡。(3)4种人工林的植物群落生物热力学健康水平皆在6至13龄间显著增加;13龄时两种乡土混交林群落生态显著高于两种纯林,两种纯林显著高于灌草坡,且该差异主要源自于乔木层生态的差异。(4)不同植被恢复模式中,10种乡土树种混交林土壤养分的累积效果最佳,13龄时其土壤总氮含量显著高于红锥纯林和自然恢复灌草坡,但与30种乡土树种混交林和尾叶桉纯林无显著差异。(5)冗余分析结果显示,研究期间植被与土壤间的相关关系逐步建立,土壤理化性状对地上植被结构变化的解释度由1龄时的73.3%逐步上升至13龄时的82.0%,但只有土壤有机碳含量在13龄时与地上植被结构的相关性达到显著水平。上述结果表明,乡土种人工林与外来种人工纯林群落结构、生物热力学健康水平、及植被与土壤间关系的发展规律相似,且相对而言,混交林优于纯林,纯林优于自然恢复灌草坡。植被恢复的起始物种丰富度并不是越高越好;发展到13龄时,10种乡土树种混交林在植被结构与土壤改良方面均优于30种乡土树种混交林。植被与土壤间相关关系的建立是一个长期的过程,不同植被恢复模式对土壤理化性状的差异性影响难以在短期内有所显现。  相似文献

Fungi isolated from soil in Timna Park (Israel) were found to belong to a new species of Exserohilum for which the name Exserohilum israeli sp. nov. is proposed. The main physiological properties of members of this species are discussed and the influence of temperature and copper concentrations on the growth and morphology of the fungus were investigated.  相似文献

Summary Eight Hawaiian Dubautia species grow in habitats as varied as exposed lava, dry scrub, mesic forest, wet forest, and bog. These species also differ in diploid chromosome number, with four species having 13 pairs of chromosomes and four species having 14 pairs. This ecological and chromosomal variation is paralleled by significant interspecific variation in tissue elastic properties. The four 13-paired species from dry habitats exhibit significantly lower tissue elastic moduli near full hydration (E i) than the four 14-paired species from mesic to wet habitats. Values of E i range from 2 to 4 MPa among the former species and from 9 to 18 MPa among the latter species. The turgor dependence of the elastic modulus also differs markedly between the two groups of species. As a result of these differences in tissue elastic properties, the capacity for maintaining high turgor pressures as tissue water content decreases is much greater in the 13-paired species from dry habitats than in the 14-paired species from mesic to wet habitats. These results indicate that the evolutionary diversification of the Dubautia species has been accompanied by a significant degree of change at the physiological level.  相似文献

乡土植物灌木化建植是高速公路边坡防护的重要生态模式。为了探讨生态恢复过程中乡土植物的生活型构成对边坡植被水土保持效益的影响,揭示乡土植物生活型-物种多样性-生态系统功能间的偶合关系,借助3个物种配置试验,于2009年4月构建了以草本、灌木或乔木为主体的草本型、灌木型、乔木型绿化配置及草-灌-乔混合型试验区。自建植次年(2010年)起,对试验区进行持续5a生态监测。结果表明:1)边坡植被的物种丰富度与乡土植物的生活型有关,呈现乔木型灌木型草-灌-乔混合型草本型趋势;2)植被的物种多样性(Shannon-Wiener指数、Pielou指数)与乡土植物生活型构成及建植年限有关:建植后第1、第2年,多样性水平呈草本型草-灌-乔混合型灌木型乔木型变化趋势;自建植后第三起(2012—2014年),呈草-灌-乔混合型草本型灌木型乔木型波动;3)植被的水土保持性能(径流系数、侵蚀模数)与群落的物种多样性密切相关:多样性水平越高,水土保持性能越强。可见,乡土植物的生活型构成对提高边坡植被的物种多样性、改善生态性能至关重要。  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the vocal repertoire of the Ponto‐Caspian goby Neogobius fluviatilis and to compare the acoustic properties of this species with those of other soniferous Mediterranean gobies belonging to the Gobius lineage. Vocalizations and associated behaviours were recorded under controlled aquarium conditions in female and male N. fluviatilis. Sound emission was elicited by means of ‘intruder tests’, using an individual of the same or opposite sex as an intruder, and recording sounds using a hydrophone placed 20 cm from the shelter used as a nest for the resident fish. Five acoustic properties, including spectral and temporal properties, were measured from 13 individuals. The vocal repertoire of the species consisted of sequences of short vocalizations during both agonistic and reproductive intraspecific interactions. The wave form of each sound resolved in a pure sine wave composed of rapidly repeated pulses. Sounds lasted about 200 ms, showing an average fundamental frequency of about 80 Hz. Sound properties did not differ between reproductive and the aggressive contexts, and the general structure of sounds was highly stereotyped. The individual means of three acoustic independent traits characterizing the sounds of seven species of the Gobius lineage, including N. fluviatilis, were then entered in a discriminant function analysis to assess how well species could be differentiated on the basis of acoustics, and their degree of affinities. The results suggested that the pulse repetition rate of the sounds, i.e. the relative tonal/pulsatile nature of the sounds, was the most important property in differentiating the species, and that this trait may contain a high level of phylogenetic signal, as the species producing tonal sounds clustered together, in line with the results of recent molecular phylogenic studies. The results were discussed in light of the geological and phylogeographical events believed to have driven the diversification of European gobies.  相似文献

The exploitation of predator signals by potential prey is well researched, but relatively little is known about how predators exploit chemical cues (either deliberate signals or waste by-products) produced by their prey. In Finland, the urine of some small rodents (Microtus spp. and Clethrionomys spp.) is reflective in the ultraviolet range of wavelengths, and diurnal raptors with ultraviolet vision use these urine marks to track their rodent prey. This study examines the potential for such a phenomenon in Australian systems by studying the ultraviolet properties of urine from 13 native and introduced mammal species that are variously preyed upon by raptors. Urine from all 13 species displayed various levels of ultraviolet absorbance in their urine and fluorescence in the ultraviolet range. However, no signs of ultraviolet hyper-reflectance were detected, suggesting that the urine of European voles have unique ultraviolet properties. Ultraviolet-sensitive predators in Australia may be able to distinguish between species based on variation in the ultraviolet absorbance of their urine, but ultraviolet properties did not differ between prey and non-prey species, nor marsupial and placental groups. Moreover, because many natural surfaces are ultraviolet absorbing, it is unlikely that raptors could rely upon the ultraviolet properties of urine to target key prey species.  相似文献

Measurements were carried out of the gas exchange properties (namely, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration rates), water use efficiency and water relations of two mangrove species, Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Rhizophora mucronata had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than C. tagal. Internal CO2 concentrations were higher during the wet season than the dry season in both species. Gas exchange properties were correlated positively with photon flux density in both species. Leaf water potentials were highest during the morning and lowest at midday and were also highest in the lower canopy leaves in both species. The two mangrove species had conservative water use. Management potential for the East African mangroves based on the results of this study is suggested.  相似文献

Five anamorphous yeast strains of ascomycetous affinity with a specific mode of budding were isolated from high bog soils of the Bakcharskoe Bog (Tomsk oblast). According to their morphological and physiological properties, these strains belong to the genus Candida but differ from all species described previously. The level of DNA–DNA homology with species similar in the assimilation spectrum was as low as 7%. Based on these data, the new species Candida aurita sp. nov. is described.  相似文献

Within Sicilian flora, the genus Hypericum (Guttiferae) includes 10 native species, the most popular of which is H. perforatum. Hypericum’s most investigated active compounds belong to naphtodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin) and phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin), and the commercial value of the drug is graded according to its total hypericin content. Ethnobotanical sources attribute the therapeutic properties recognized for H. perforatum, also to other Hypericum species. However, their smaller distribution inside the territory suggests that an industrial use of such species, when collected from the wild, would result in an unacceptable depletion of their natural stands. This study investigated about the potential pharmacological properties of 48 accessions from six native species of Hypericum, including H. perforatum and five ‘minor’ species, also comparing, when possible, wild and cultivated sources. The variability in the content of active metabolites was remarkably high, and the differences within the species were often comparable to the differences among species. No difference was enlightened between wild and cultivated plants. A carefully planned cultivation of Hypericum seems the best option to achieve high and steady biomass yields, but there is a need for phytochemical studies, aimed to identify for multiplication the genotypes with the highest content of the active metabolites.  相似文献

Dinoflagellates are the most abundant protists that produce bioluminescence. Currently, there is an incomplete knowledge of the identity of bioluminescent species arising from inter‐ and intraspecific variability in bioluminescence properties. In this study, PCR primers were designed to amplify the dinoflagellate luciferase gene (lcf) from genetically distant bioluminescent species. One of the primer pairs was “universal,” whereas others amplified longer gene sequences from subsets of taxa. The primers were used to study the distribution of lcf and assess bioluminescence potential in dinoflagellate strains representing a wide variety of taxa as well as multiple strains of selected species. Strains of normally bioluminescent species always contained lcf even when they were found not to produce light, thus demonstrating the utility of this methodology as a powerful tool for identifying bioluminescent species. Bioluminescence and lcf were confined to the Gonyaulacales, Noctilucales, and Peridiniales. Considerable variation was observed among genera, or even species within some genera, that contained this gene. Partial sequences of lcf were obtained for the genera Ceratocorys, Ceratium, Fragilidium, and Protoperidinium as well as from previously untested species or gene regions of Alexandrium and Gonyaulax. The sequences revealed high variation among gene copies that obscured the boundaries between species or even genera, some of which could be explained by the presence of two genetic variants within the same species of Alexandrium. Highly divergent sequences within Alexandrium and Ceratium show a more diverse composition of lcf than previously known.  相似文献

Summary The restriction map of the rDNA unit of Helianthus annuus was constructed using EcoRI, BamHI, HindIII, KpnI and SacI restriction enzymes. Variations in this map among 61 ecotypes representing 39 species of the genus Helianthus were analyzed. The sizes of the rDNA unit ranged from 9.8 to 11.0 kbp, due to a length-repeat heterogeneity of the external non-transcribed spacer by increments of 200 base pair segments. Lengthrepeat heterogeneity and restriction polymorphism were found to be characteristic of populations or species of Helianthus. Restriction patterns and thermal melting with probes of a cloned H. annuus ENTS segment allowed us to differentiate species from each other. However, most lines of the cultivated sunflower were found to be identical on the basis of the physical properties of their ribosomal DNA.  相似文献

Vibrational signals (songs) were recorded and compared for two stink bug species, Thyanta pallidovirens and T. custator accerra. Females of both species produced two songs. Male T. pallidovirens also produced two songs, whereas male T. c. accerra produced four. Songs emitted by females of both species were comparable in structure and function, as was one of the male-produced songs. During the courtship phase of mating behavior, males of both species emitted a song with similar function but different temporal and spectral properties. Basic properties of songs, such as the dominant frequencies, were similar to those of songs of other pentatomid species, but the extensive use of frequency modulation and overlapping duets were novel. Differences in songs, combined with differences in male-produced pheromones, may play a role in the reproductive isolation of these congeners.  相似文献
