The effects of radiation-mediated free radical production on polyamine metabolism were investigated in grape cells ( Vitis vinifera L. cv. Gamay) using a cell suspension culture. Putrescine (Put) synthesis was triggered in irradiated cells (0. 5 kGy) only when ammonium was present in the culture medium. Under these conditions. Put accumulated to a continuously high level. As also described for other kinds of stress, the level of spermidine was slightly enhanced and that of spermine unchanged. The role of ammonium was assessed by studying non-irradiated cell cultures. In the presence of ammonium, a transient increase of both arginine decarboxylase (ADC) activity and of Put synthesis was observed during the lag phase of growth. This Put enhancement was inhibited by difluoromethyl arginine and not by difluoromethyl ornithine, showing that increased Put synthesis occurs via the ADC pathway. When ammonium was withheld from the culture medium. ADC activity was still triggered though transient Put accumulation was completely suppressed. These results emphasize the importance of ammonium availability in cultured cells as a limiting factor for Put production. Polyamine synthesis, therefore, cannot be stimulated by gamma irradiation in the absence of an ammonium supply. These results support the hypothesis that Put synthesis is a detoxification process of the ammonium produced as a result of nitrogen recycling within stressed plant cells. 相似文献

Toxicity to Anagrus spp. of fungicides and insecticides used in grape production was assessed with laboratory and field bioassays. Field-equivalent rates of fungicides were relatively nontoxic to Anagrus spp. adults in laboratory bioassays. In bioassays with field-weathered residues, sulfur (9600 ppm) caused elevated mortality of adults for 14 to 21 days posttreatment. Residues of microencapsulated methyl parathion (600 and 1200 ppm) increased mortality relative to the control up to 43 days posttreatment. Duration of elevated mortality of adults exposed to carbaryl was dose dependent and ranged from 14 (at 1200 ppm) to >43 days (at 4800 ppm). Residues of carbaryl and methyl parathion applied over parasitized eggs had little effect on emergence, but may have delayed development. In a field trial, adults trapped in carbaryl-treated plots were significantly reduced starting 3 weeks after treatment. Subsequent lower trap catches may have been related to effects of residues on Anagrus spp. adults or to lower leafhopper egg densities in treated plots. 相似文献

We examined the toxicity of a fungicide, sulfur, to the egg parasitoid Anagrus erythroneurae (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) Trjapitsyn and Chiapini and the vineyard leafhopper pest Erythroneura elegantula Osborn (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) and tested whether or not the use of sulfur in the field affects biological control of E. elegantula. Using field cage bioassays, we demonstrated that sulfur is toxic to adult A. erythroneurae parasitoids, but not toxic to adult E. elegantula leafhoppers. We nonetheless found in a field experiment that sulfur produced no changes in rates of parasitism or E. elegantula egg density, and generated only a very small increase in the density of E. elegantula nymphs. These results suggest that sulfur, although toxic to A. erythroneurae, is not highly disruptive of E. elegantula biological control in vineyards. Our results suggest that simple bioassays of acute toxicity may not accurately predict the

Seed samples from 12 white and 25 red international and Hellenic native grape varieties (Vitis vinifera) were screened for their polyphenolic composition. The polyphenols determined were mainly of low molecular weight, including gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, epigallocatechin gallate and the procyanidins B1 and B2. Average values of total content for white and red varieties (376 and 388 mg/100 g seeds, respectively) were very similar. Comparable results were observed with respect to the individual polyphenol content with seeds from red varieties being, in general, slightly richer. The predominant flavanol monomer in white and red varieties was catechin (which accounted for 50.5 and 49.3%, respectively, of the total content), whilst gallic acid and epigallocatechin were the constituents showing the lowest content, respectively. The data obtained are discussed with regard to the exploitation of grape seeds as a low-cost source of value-added phytochemicals. 相似文献

This investigation deals with the control effects of the insect pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae on Daktulosphaira vitifoliae. In pot experiments, the soil surrounding phylloxera-infected grapes was inoculated with barley colonised with M. anisopliae. After thirty-two days, ineight of ten Metarhizium-applied pots nofresh phylloxera infections could be observed.In two of ten plants, a few fresh nodositiessingly occupied with phylloxera or phylloxeraeggs could be found. In all untreated plants,fresh nodosities with either single (two of sixplants) or multiple (four of six plants)occupation with phylloxera could be observed.M. anisopliae could be re-isolated in aconcentration of <1 × 103 CFU g$minus;1 soil dry weight from those pots with phylloxera-infected plants that had been treated with the fungus. Effects of agricultural diversification on the abundance, distribution, and pest control potential of spiders: a review 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A review of the literature showed that spider abundance was increased by diversification in 63% of studies. A comparison of diversification modes showed that spider abundance in the crop was increased in 33% of studies by `aggregated diversification' (e.g. intercropping and non-crop strips) and in 80% of studies by `interspersed diversification' (e.g., undersowing, partial weediness, mulching and reduced tillage). It is suggested that spiders tend to remain in diversified patches and that extending the diversification throughout the whole crop (as in interspersed diversification) offers the best prospects for improving pest control. There is little evidence that spiders walk in significant numbers into fields from uncultivated field edges, but diversification at the landscape level serves to foster large multi-species regional populations of spiders which are valuable as a source of aerial immigrants into newly planted crops. There are very few manipulative field studies where the impact of spiders on pests has been measured in diversified crops compared with undiversified controls. It is encouraging, however, that in those few studies an increased spider density resulted in improved pest control. Future work needs are identified. 相似文献

Fusarium root rot in row crops is typically managed by cultural practices and fungicide seed treatments. Biological control using microbial agents is another option but needs further development for improved disease management. Screening to identify biocontrol agents are crucial. However, relationships among the steps and how to improve the screening process are unresolved questions. Strains of Burkholderia (4), Bacillus (5) and Trichoderma (26) were studied in vitro against six Fusarium pathogens. All the bacteria and five selected Trichoderma strains were tested in planta in the greenhouse against diseases of Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium oxysporum. Burkholderia ambifaria C628, Bacillus simplex R180, and all Trichoderma isolates showed high reduction in disease levels in corn, soybean and wheat, ranging from 16 to 63%. Responses of the biocontrol agents during in vitro and in planta screening did not always correlate. In vitro and in planta tests should be considered independently in selecting biocontrol candidates. 相似文献

Abstract The significance of natural enemies in the failure or reduced effectiveness of weed biological control agents remains largely unknown. Larval and pupal parasitism by native insects in the stem-galling moth Epiblema strenuana was studied in north Queensland, 4 (1986–87) and 16 (1998–99) years after its introduction as a biological-control agent for Parthenium hysterophorus . Specific questions answered in this study are: (i) Has parasitism increased over the years?; (ii) Are the levels of parasitism influenced by the host plant phenology?; and (iii) What are the potential implications of current parasitism levels for the effectiveness of E. strenuana ? There was no increase in the parasitoid species assemblage over the years. In 1986–87, Antrocephalus sp. and Bracon sp. were the most predominant species. The combined larval and pupal parasitism was low (2.6%) and there was no seasonal difference in the parasitism levels. In 1998–99 Bracon sp. was the most prevalent species. Parasitism by Bracon sp. in 1998–99 was several times higher (22.9%) than the combined larval and pupal parasitism in 1986–87. However, parasitism by Bracon sp. remained low (6.5–8.2%) at the beginning of the parthenium-growing season, and reached peak levels (49–53%) only at the end of the season. Parasitism by Bracon sp. was also significantly lower in rosettes (7.2%) than in flowering plants (22.8%). Galling can have a negative impact on the weed only when initiated at the rosette stage. In 1998–99 lower levels of parasitism early in the season when most plants are in the rosette stage suggest that the impact of parasitism on the effectiveness of the gall insect may not be significant. 相似文献

The European grasshopper mite Eutrombidium trigonum (Hermann) lives concealed in the soil in relatively warm and xeric biotopes. The eggs and spermatophores display a moderate drought resistence. The adults, during mating and larvae leave the soil and are to be found on the soil surface. The host range of the parasitic larva is restricted to Saltatoria. The larval growth is much greater than that of other instars of E. trigonum; however, no damage or other effects on the hosts were obvious and usually the hosts survived parasitism. The active post-larval instars of E. trigonum are predatory and feed exclusively on the eggs of Acrididae. The life cycle of E. trigonum is uni- to semi-voltine and is synchronized by an obligatory diapause of the adult instar before reproduction.Deceased. 相似文献

Hoary cress (Lepidium draba L.) is an invasive perennial mustard (Brassicaceae) introduced to North America from Eurasia. In 2001 we initiated a program to investigate the potential for classical biological control of this weed in the US. Literature and field surveys for the arthropods associated with L. draba were conducted on both continents. Field surveys began in Europe in 2001, and in 2002–2003 standardized surveys were conducted in both Europe and the western US. These field surveys resulted in 80 new host records for L. draba in Europe, and 37 new host records in the US. Although total species richness was nearly four times greater in Europe, there were approximately equal proportions of oligophagous and polyphagous species in each range. Monophagous species were only encountered in the European surveys. The literature surveys revealed that the arthropod fauna associated with L. draba is fairly well known in Europe (175 species), but not in the US (eight species), where the literature was virtually derelict of host records. In both the literature and field surveys, the order Coleoptera contained the most species (>50%) in Europe, whereas the order Hemiptera contained the most species (>40%) in the US. Nearly one-half of the species found in literature and field surveys are flower or seed feeders and the other half are primarily foliage or stem feeders. Ten potential biological control agents were discovered from the surveys, of which four are currently being investigated at the CABI Bioscience Centre in Switzerland. We examined the behavior of two arboreal monkeys—Piliocolobus badius (western red colobus) and Cercopithecus diana (Diana monkey)—in the presence and absence of a third, predominately terrestrial monkey, Cercocebus atys (sooty mangabey) in the Ivory Coast's Taï Forest. Via experimental data, we show that sooty mangabeys are effective sentinels for ground predators. Then we compared strata use of red colobus and Diana monkeys in the presence and absence of mangabeys. Our data indicate that red colobus and Diana monkeys descend to low forest levels and to the forest floor significantly more often when mangabeys are spatially intermingled with them, i.e. in polyspecific associations. The niche extension may provide some foraging advantage, especially for red colobus. We identified the specific causal agent—relaxed ground predator pressure—of a temporary shift in habitat use. In this instance, the presence of one species (Cercocebus atys) leads to the temporary expansion of a niche normally avoided by others Piliocolobus badius and Cercopithecus diana. 相似文献

Tetrastichus gallerucae (Fonscolombe) was collected in southern France in 1985 and is being reared at the Division of Biological Control in Albany, Ca for use against the elm leaf beetle (ELB),Xanthogaleruca luteola (Müller) in northern California. This egg parasitoid can be reared easily by keeping the beetle eggs on a moist substrate to prevent desiccation and by inhibiting the growth of mold with air currents. A laboratory colony of ELB adults provides a constant supply of fresh eggs for the parasitoids. In 1985 and 1986 over 80,000T. gallerucae were released at 17 sites. 相似文献

In the laboratory, mortality rates of the agromyzid leafminer larvae,Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess), ranged from 48 to 98% by 20 strains and/or species of steinernematid and heterorhabditid nematodes. In the greenhouse, abamectin provided superior control of larval leafminers, killing 100% of them as compared withSteinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) All strain (24 to 43% leafminer mortality) orS. carpocapsae Liriomyza-selected strain (8 to 44% leafminer mortality); the maximum relative humidity (r.h.) ranged between 81 and 91% and the minimum r.h. between 50 and 70%. In the foghouse under high r.h., the commercially available All strain and the Hawaiian isolate ofS. feltiae (Filipjev) MG-14 strain caused 69 and 67% mean mortality, respectively. There was a significant correlation (P<0.01) between nematode mortality of leafminers and r.h., including the mean, standard deviation, and minimum r.h. during the 48 h after treatment. Average r.h. >92% with a standard deviation of <9% r.h. and a minimum of 72% r.h. providedS. carpocapsae All strain mortality rates of leafminers >65%. The major constraint against the use of nematodes against leafminers in the foliar environment is low r.h. Conventional and biological control of a native moth, Dalaca pallens (Blanchard) (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae), were evaluated in Southern Chile in relation to changes on community metrics (diversity, species richness, evenness and dominance) of a soil-dwelling invertebrate assemblage. Two experiments were conducted (in winter and spring) to compare non-target effects of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide. The invertebrate community was sampled before and after spraying by extracting soil cores. Estimates of diversity (Shannon index), species richness, evenness (Hurlbert’s Probability of Interspecific Encounter) and dominance indicated that the invertebrate assemblage was strongly disturbed by lambda-cyhalothrin treatment but not by B. bassiana applied in winter, over the sampling period (40 days). Spring results revealed that diversity and evenness at control and at B. bassiana plots were similar between them and higher than at lambda-cyhalothrin plots, while there were no differences between sites 30 days after treatment in species richness. Inundative biological control using B. bassiana strain QU-B931 was considered to pose lower ecological risk than lambda-cyhalothrin, currently one of the most frequently used insecticides for D. pallens control. 相似文献

Predation by the phytoseiid mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, is considered a major threat to the effectiveness of biological control of gorse, Ulex europaeus, using Tetranychus lintearius. To assess this threat and to determine if the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations, its development and predator : prey generation time ratios were assessed. time of two populations of P. persimilis fed on two diets, T. urticae and T. lintearius, were determined at two temperatures, 14 and 24°C. There were no significant differences in either mortality or development
time between the two populations of P. persimilis at these temperatures. There is therefore no evidence that the two tested populations of P. persimilis are behaving as different strains. Similarly, diet had no significant effect on either mortality or development time at these
temperatures. At 14°C the mortality of P. persimilis was significantly higher and development was significantly longer than at 24°C. Using pre-adult development as a surrogate
for generation times, predator : prey generation time ratios were calculated between P. persimilis and both T. urticae and T. lintearius using data from this and other studies. The predator : prey generation time ratios between P. persimilis and T. lintearius were lower than those between P. persimilis and T. urticae. These results indicate that the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is likely to be comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations. This provides further evidence that predation by P. persimilis is having a deleterious effect on T. lintearius populations and therefore reducing its effectiveness as a biological control agent for gorse. 相似文献

Dioscorea bulbifera, an Asian vine, is invasive in the southeastern USA. It rarely flowers but propagates from potato-like bulbils formed in leaf axils, which persist into the subsequent growing season. Lilioceris cheni Gressitt and Kimoto, a foliage-feeding beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Criocerinae) from Nepal, had been tested, proven to be a specialist and approved for release as a biological control agent. Regulatory delays, however, resulted in the demise of quarantine-held colonies, and acquisition of new Nepalese stock proved untenable. Searches then undertaken in southern China resulted in the collection of over 300 similar beetles. Two Chinese Lilioceris species were identified: one confirmed to be L. cheni and the other identified as Lilioceris egena (Weise). Mitochondrial analysis revealed an exact DNA match between some Chinese and one of the two Nepalese c oxidase subunit I haplotypes and all Chinese L. cheni haplotypes clustered as a single species but the comingling of the two species aroused concerns over possible hybridisation. These concerns were allayed by nuclear D2 analysis showing the absence of dual parental sequences. Nonetheless, diligence was exercised to ensure that the Chinese strains were safe to release. Abridged host testing using critical test species verified specificity. Caged releases during autumn 2011 documented the ability of adult beetles to overwinter in south Florida despite a prolonged lack of foliage. Open releases the following year produced vigorous populations that caused extensive defoliation. Preliminary observations indicate that L. cheni now contributes to the control of D. bulbifera and the bulbil-feeding L. egena should complement these effects if its host range proves appropriate. 相似文献

Cyphocleonus achates (Fahraeus), a root-feeding weevil introduced from Eurasia, is an effective biological control agent against spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe L. ssp. micranthos. Because C. achates is univoltine and does not fly, distribution of the weevil has been slow. To hasten the weevil's distribution, a rearing effort using field corrals was initiated at a facility in Corvallis, Montana. Procedures for mass-rearing the weevil in field corrals are described, with an emphasis on improvements over earlier methods. The described field-corral approach is effective and appropriate for producing C. achates for distribution in the western United States. 相似文献
