SVXOPSIS. Intertidal crabs are subjected to marked fluctuationsin environmental factors. Temperature and salinity influencethe distribution of organisms both on a latitudinal basis andalong a subtidal to terrestrial gradient. These factors areoperative on all stages of the life history. Resistance-adaptations. Adult fiddler crabs (genus Uca) fromthe temperate zone are more resistant to low temperature thantropical species. Also, the tolerance to low temperature ofcrabs from the temperate zone is greatly influenced by thermalacclimation, i.e. cold-acclimated crabs are more resistant thanwarm-acclimated animals. In contrast, tropical species havelimited adaptive ability. At elevated temperatures no consistentdifference in the lethal limits of crabs from tropical and temperatezones is observed. In contrast with the adults, larvae of tropicalspecies are cold-resistant. However, the larvae of all speciestested are more sensitive to reduced salinities than are theadults. Capacity-adaptatioyis. Subtidal species of crabs tend to havea lower level of respiratory performance, as measured by variousindices, than crabs from the intertidal zone. The metabolicresponse of fiddler crabs from the temperate zone is more labileat low temperature than in species from the tropical zone. Atelevated temperature the reverse response is observed. On aninterspecific basis, differences in the metabolictemperaturepatterns of acclimation of latitudinally separated populationsof U. pugilator are observed when based on the hypotheticalschemes of Bullock, Precht, and Prosser.  相似文献

The present state of knowledge concerning Portunus larvae isreviewed, and the three zoeal and the megalopa stages of P.rubromarginatus are described and figured. Details of appendagesetation are tabulated. This species is unusual amongst knownPortunus spp. in having only three zoeal stages and, like otherPortunus spp. but in contrast with other Portuninae, it has4 + 4, or 4 + 1 + 4, setae on the posterior telson border. When compared with larvae of the five other Indo-West PacificPortunus species whose larvae are known P. rubromarginatus zoeaeare readily distinguished from all, except P. hastatoides, usingthe key features given by Kurata (1975). Comparison was madebetween first zoeae of these two species, and also of P. pelagicusand P. sanguinolentus, using larvae reared by the authors. Itwas found telson characters alone allow distinction betweenlarvae of these four species. These characters are tabulated. P. rubromarginatus megalopae differ from those known for congenitorsin having a large spine on the uchium of the first pereiopod,but not on the carpus, and in having relatively very small sternalcornuae. Several of these features disagree with those previously thoughtto characterise larval Portuninae or Portunus species.  相似文献

Thermal stress is one environmental parameter that has greatlyinfluenced the migration of crustaceans from the sea to land.Since a greater number of species of terrestrial crabs are foundin the tropics than in the temperate zone, comparative studiesof the influence of temperature on latitudinally separated populationswere undertaken. Two tropical species, U. rapax and U. thayeri,may occur as far north as St. Augustine, Florida, or, followinga severe winter, may be rare north of Cape Kennedy. The lethaleffect of the low temperatures recorded during one severe winter(1957–58) is supported by laboratory studies in whichLD50, deaths occurred in 4.5 days at 10°C for U. rapax acclimatedto 18°C. The experiment demonstrates that U. rapax cannotacclimate to and survive low temperatures. This contrasts markedlywith the situation in semi-terrestrial crabs of the temperatezone, which are able to acclimate to cold. The distribution of Uca around Cape Cod Bay correlates wellwith the coastal hydrographic thermal gradient and supportsPassano's suggestion that temperatures below 20° may belimiting as they inhibit proecdysis in U. pugnax. Such an inhibitionis found experimentally in U. pugilator and in the tropicalspecies, U. rapax. It is hypothesized that a shift in the thermodynamicsof the processes underlying molting has not occurred in Ucaof the temperate zone. The paucity of semi-terrestrial Brachyurain the temperate zone may be due to the failure of many speciesto evolve capacity-adaptations to carry out all requisite lifeprocesses at temperatures below 20°, or the resistance-adaptationsnecessary to survive the low temperatures of winter.  相似文献

A genual pattern of photophobic responses has been observedwhich differs for calanoid copepods from freshwater, estuarineand oceanic environments. Using a video-computer system formotion analysis, the photophobic responses of light and darkadapted calanoid copepods were compared. Dark-adapted copepodswere exposed to 600 ms flashes of dim blue light at 5 s intervalswhich simulated the flashes of biolumines-cent marine zooplankton.Light-adapted copepods were exposed to 600 ms intervals of darknessat 5 s intervals to simulate the shadows of organisms passingoverhead. Four species of coastal marine copepods (Acartia hudsonica,Centropages hamatus, Pseudocalanus minutus and Temora longicornis)all showed photophobic responses to both flashes and shadows.These responses may have adaptive value to the copepods sincethey live in an environment with predators that are bioluminescentat night and cast shadows on their prey during the day (e.g.ctenophores and cnidarian medusae). Two species of oceanic copepods(Euchaeta marina, Pleuromamma abdominalis) showed strong photophobicresponses to flashes but no response to shadows. This may correspondto the abundance of bioluminescent predators on copepods inthe oceanic environment (fish, ctenophores, siphonophores, etc.)and their lack of exposure to the shadows of predators, sinceboth these species are rarely found in the euphoric zone duringthe day. Two species of freshwater copepods (Diaptomus sanguineus,Epishwa massachusettsensis) showed no similar photophobic responseto flashes of light. This lack of startle response may relateto the lack of bioluminescence in the freshwater environment.Freshwater copepods showed a weak photophobic response to shadows.The adaptive value of this behavior is unclear, however, sincethe responses seem to be too weak to function for escape, andthe dominant predators large enough to cast shadows (fish) tendto approach their prey laterally. 1Present address: Marine Science Institute, University of Texasat Austin, Port Aransas, TX 78373–1267, USA  相似文献

The metabolic fate of the auxin herbicide (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)aceticacid (MCPA) has been determined in a number of species usinga vacuum infiltration technique. In all cases MCPA became hydroxylatedto form (4-chloro-2-hydroxymethylphenoxy)acetic acid, whichaccumulated largely as a glycosidic conjugate. The nature ofthe oxidized metabolite from oat (Avena sativa L.) was verifiedby GC/MS. In all cases at least one diethyl ether-soluble conjugateof MCPA was formed; these are suggested to be amino acid conjugates.Several minor aglycones were also formed. Important speciesvariations in both the rate and quantitative nature of metabolismwere observed. Pretreatment of potato (Solarium tuberosum L.)tuber slices with unlabelled MCPA and other auxins increasedthe capacity for hydroxylation, but particularly induced theformation of an MCPA-glycoside. This was never a major metaboliteunder normal circumstances. The rate of hydroxylation was alsoenhanced by ageing in MnCl2. Although the ether-soluble conjugatesof MCPA were stable metabolites, exogenously applied conjugateisolated from carrot (Daucus carota L.) was readily cleavedin four species. Four species of seals occupy the pack-ice region of the oceanssurrounding the Antarctic Continent. These seals include thecrabeater (Lobodon cardnophagus), leopard (Hydrurga leptonyx),weddell (Leplonychotes weddellii), and ross (Ommatophoca rossii),and are true seals with special adaptations for living in thepack-ice region. Two other seal species, the southern elephantseal (Mirounga leonina) and the fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella)(the only eared seal of this region) generally occur furtherto the north and use land rather than ice during the periodof birth of young. This paper reviews the status of these species,and examines the generalecology of the four species that inhabitthe pack-ice zone. In general, the four species that occupythe pack-ice zone have specialized in habitats and habits sothat little overlap in dietsor habitat use exist among thesespecies. The exception is the interaction between the leopardand the crabeater which occupy the same regions and eat krill(Euphausia superba), particularly during the winter. The impactof the potential harvest of krill by man on these species isdiscussed. Further, the impact that recovery of the large baleenwhales that feedin this region during the summer is discussedwith regard to the changes that might occur as competition forkrill by the large vertebrate species increases.  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution of micro-metazoans sampledwith fine nets of 0.05 mm mesh size were studied at three stationsin the Arabian Sea during the intermonsoon period (April/May1987) and down to 1850 m depth. In the epipelagic zone (0–100m). values of biomass and metazoan abundance tended to be higherthan those reported for other tropical oceanic areas. In themesopelagic zone, which is characterized by an extreme oxygendeficiency between 100 and 1000 m depth, the abundance of metazoantaxa and species numbers of non-calanoid copepods were largelyreduced. However, intermediate abundance maxima occurred withinthis zone, which were dominated by specific metazoan taxa (copepods.appendicularians) and species of non-calanoids (Oncaea sp. C).In the bathypelagic zone below 1050 m, the species diversityof the dominant copepod family Oncaeidae increased substantially.Two-thirds of a total of 69 oncaeid species recovered were confinedto this layer. As most of them were small in size and occurredin low abundance only, the increase in total oncaeid densityand/or plankton biomass was less conspicuous. Dominant Oncaeaspecies in the bathypelagic zone were O.longipes and O.brodskii.The results are compared with published data from the ArabianSea and other tropical oceanic areas with and without an extrememesopelagic oxygen minimum zone Possible causes of the intermediateabundance maxima within the oxygen deficiency zone are discussed.  相似文献

A cDNA clone (TAB7) encoding a putative woundinduced (Win) proteinhas been isolated from a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.cv. Ailsa Craig) leaf abscission zone cDNA library using a differentialscreening strategy. The clone has a high degree of homologyat the amino acid level to both the potato win1 and 2 genes,Hevea brasiliensis hevein and Nicotiana tabacum PR-4a and PR-4bproteins. The mRNA encoded by TAB7 is up-regulated within 12h of exposure to ethylene (10µl l–1) and its expressionincreases steadily within the cells comprising the leaf abscissionzone and to a lesser extent in the adjacent non-zone tissue.This rise precedes the onset of cell separation. Southern analysisindicates that the mRNA is encoded by either a single gene ora small gene family. The role of the protein during abscissionis discussed. A new ovoviviparous littorinid gastropod, Tectarius (Echininiopsis)niuensis, from Niue, west of the Cook Islands, is described.This is distinguished from the only other ovoviviparous memberof the genus, T. (E.) viviparus (Rosewater, 1982) from the MarianaIslands, here redescribed in detail. The new species is remarkabletor its high-level habitat in the littoral fringe on wave-exposedkarstic limestone cliffs, for its variation in shell shape accordingto tidal level, shell colour polymorphism, calcified operculumand penis with a single mamilliform penial gland. In a cladisticanalysis of morphological characters, including single representativesof each of the three other subgenera of Tectarius (Tectarius,Echininus, Tectininus), these two ovoviviparous species appearas sister-taxa. This is confirmed by a molecular phylogeneticanalysis of the same species, based on the sequence of a portionof the 16S ribosomal RNA mitochondrial gene. Neither analysisunequivocally confirms the monophyly of Tectarius. The divergenceof DNA sequences within Tectarius suggests that the genus arosein the Upper Cretaceous, much earlier than the oldest (UpperEocene) fossils. Only 4 of the 175 species of Littorinidae areknown to be ovoviviparous (with brooding through metamorphosis)and the possible adaptive significance of this type of developmentis discussed. Hitherto, its rarity had been explained by earlyextinction of poorly-dispersed brooding taxa. However, ovoviviparitymay have persisted in Echininiopsis for at least 35 millionyears, and has not precluded colonization of islands 6300kmapart. A hypothesis of the evolutionary relationships of thirty-fourspecies of Fundulus and their closer relatives is presented.The study is restricted to morphological characters which couldbe determined to be primitive or derived using the methods ofphylogenetic systematics. Following Parenti, a family Fundulidaeis recognized. It is composed of four genera of North Americankillifishes. (Cyprinodontidae as usually constitutedis polyphyletic.)No convincing characters demonstrate that Fundulus is a naturalgroup (a monophyletic group). However, all species of Fundulusshare four derived characters with Lucania. The sister group(closest genealogical relative) of Fundulus plus Lucania isa group composed of the genera Adinia and Leptolucania. Fourmonophyletic groups of Fundulus can be recognized based on sharedderived characters: (1) subgenus Fundulus (seven species excludingthree species placed in Fontinus); (2) subgenus Fonlinus (sixspecies); (3) subgenus Xensima (five species); and (4) subgenusZygonectes (thirteen species). Three species, F. (Plancterus)zebrinus, F. lima, and F. parvipinnis are of uncertain affinitieswithin the Lucania-Fundulus clade  相似文献

On the basis of collections from SW Wales and W Ireland it isshown that small (<5 mm) black and/or white Littorina occurringin the barnacle zone on exposed shores, of the L. neglecta shelltype, comprise three species. From their reproductive anatomythese correspond to L. saxatilis, L. arcana and L. nigrolineata,and are interpreted as analogous barnacle-dwelling ecotypesof these species. Nitrogen excretion by two surf zone gastropods, Bullia rhodostomaReeve and Bullia digitalis (Dillwyn) was determined under laboratoryconditions. The forms of nitrogen excreted and the effects ofmass, temperature, short-term starvation and feeding on excretionrates were determined for each species. The excretion ratesof B. rhodostoma removed directly from the surf zone (within2 h of capture) were also determined at three temperatures.No significant differences in the forms of nitrogen excretedwere found between starved and fed whelks or between species.Ammonia was the major form of nitrogen excreted with amino acidsof secondary importance. Urea was not detected and a small percentageof total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) excreted was unaccounted forin both species. Mass significantly influenced the rate of ammoniaexcretion in both species. No significant difference in slopes(common b = 0.60) were found between starved B. rhodostoma andB. digitalis or between fed whelks of the two species (commonb = 0.54). Mass adjusted mean ammonia excretion rates of starvedB. rhodostoma and those removed directly from the surf zone(‘natural diet’) did not differ significantly. Adjustedmean ammonia excretion rates of fed whelks were significantlyhigher than ‘starved’ excretion rates in both species.Temperature did not significantly influence ammonia excretionrates of fed B. rhodostoma or starved and fed B. digitalis.Bullia recycle 14.45 to 23.98 g N per metre strip of surf zoneper year which constitutes less than 1% of total phytoplanktonrequirements in the surf zone. Crocodilian relationships supported by the phylogenetic relationshipsof digenean and nematode parasites are compared with currentestimates of crocodilian phylogeny. The parasite data support(1) the placement of Gavialis as the sister-group of the alligatoridsand the crocodylids, (2) the monophyly of alligators and caimans,(3) the placement of Caiman (as a monophyletic group) as thesister-group of Melanosuchus plus Paleosuchus, and (4) ancientorigins of Crocodylus consistent with patterns of continentaldrift. The parasite data do not support the monophyly of Crocodylus,but the "misplaced" species (C. palustris and Osteolaemus) havehad few parasites reported from them. There is evidence of widespreadhost-switching, but most of the ambiguity appears to resultfrom uneven representation of parasite groups in host species.This is probably due both to uneven sampling by parasitologistsand to parasite extinctions associated with crocodilian extinctions.  相似文献

该文讨论我国光肩星天牛Anoplophoraglabrlpennis(Motschulsky)类群的外部形态和外生殖器的主要鉴别特征,寄主、地理分布、起源及其演化。光肩星天牛主要分布在山西吕梁山、太行山以东的广大平原地区,寄主广泛,主要有榆、复叶槭、杨、柳、五角枫等。黄斑星天牛主要分布在秦岭以北,山西吕粱山太行山以西的陕甘宁地区,向东已扩展到河南、河北;主要为害杨树,也为害柳、榆。四川星天牛主要分布于秦岭以南的西部地区,北限在陕西太白山到甘肃天水一带;主要为害柳。在秦岭以北到天水之间是黄斑星天牛和四川星天牛的重叠分布区,山西太行山两侧南北走向的狭长地带是光肩星天牛和黄肩星天牛重叠分布区,两个狭长地带交会处,大约在秦岭以北的陕西和(或)山西境内有三个种的重叠分布区域.在云、贵、川地区广泛分布着四川星天牛,至今还没有发现光肩星天牛、黄斑星天牛和蓝角星天牛,后者应该是一个值得怀疑的种。  相似文献

The armoured dinoulagellates present in 90 plankton samplescollected by the use of an Apatein closing net were enumerated.The samples were collected from various stations around the20W meridian and between 44 and 60N during the 1988, 1989and 1990 Biogeochemical Ocean Flux Study (BOFS) cruises. Atmost stations, samples were obtained from various depths, althoughin 1990 only the surface zone was sampled. A total of 126 specieswere identified, of which 49 have chloroplasts and are thoughtto be autotrophic, 47 are assumed to be heterotrophic and thenutritional type of the remainder is unknown. The samples collectedduring July 1988 were dominated by large numbers of the twophotosynthetic species Gonyaulax polygramma and Protoceratiunreticulatum (=Gonyaulax grindleyi). The much more intensivesampling of 1989 revealed several Ceratiun species, C.fusus,C.furca and C.lineazum, together with Gonyaulax polygramma,as the most common dinoflagellates. In 1990 the samples, whichwere taken during a Lagrangian survey in May-June, were alsodominated by Ceratium species. This time C.azoricwn was a majorcomponent and Protoceratium reticulatum was again present inhigh numbers as in 1988. A number of analyses were carried outon the data collected. It was found that the majority of themore frequent species were autotrophs and most were membersof the genus Ceraziwn. The effects of depth were shown to resultin reduced numbers of cells and species, but no clear associationwas found between species and depth. After the application ofDetrended Correspondence Analysis (DECORANA) to all surfacesamples, there was found to be a clear association between thespecies composition and both time of year and latitude. Watercolumn stability is also probably an important factor in speciescomposition and cell numbers. Seasonal changes in the frequencyof the main species were also noted with some, such as C.lineatum,being more important early in the summer and others, such asProtoceratium reticulatum and particularly G.polygramma, becomingdominant later. The use of Two-way Indicator Analysis (TWINSPAN)revealed some potential species associations.  相似文献

A new species of Phyllodesmium (Aeolidoidea) from Guam (Micronesia)is described. Phyllodesmium guamensis n.sp. is characterizedby having two rows of denticles in the radular teeth, this beingdifferent from the previously described species of the genus.The shape of the teeth, however, is identical in all the speciesof the genus, and unique among aeolids. Furthermore, P. guamensispossesses a double row of cerata in the precardiac cluster andup to 10 post-cardiac ceratal rows. Also, P. guamensis showsa very dense accumulation of zooxanthellae in the ceratal digestivegland, which is ramified inside the cerata. This species feedson at least three species of the soft coral Sinularia: S. polydactyla,S. maxima and a third, undescribed species. The breeding cycles of two species of sandy beach whelk (Bulliadigitalis and B. pura) are presented and compared with a thirdspecies (B. rhodostoma). In all three species, egg maturationand copulation occur in spring while summer marks the depositionand spawning of egg capsules. B. digitalis and B. pura migrateoffshore to lay their eggs, the juveniles of both species restrictingthemselves to beyond the breaker zone. Newly hatched snailsof B. rhodostoma appear in the intertidal towards late summer.The discovery of a penis-like structure on females of B. rhodostomais investigated. The pseudopenis was also found on B. pura butnever on B. digitalis. The possibility of a sex-change was eliminatedon the histological investigation of the gonads of a range ofsnails and the examination of sex-ratios over a period of fivemonths. 针对粉虱类害虫难以准确快速地进行形态鉴别的问题, 以局部发生的黑刺粉虱Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance)为对象, 采用特征序列扩增区域 (SCAR) 标记法, 研究其快速分子检测技术。利用SCAR标记技术获得了长度为987 bp的黑刺粉虱特异性片段 (GenBank登录号为FJ613323), 根据此片段的碱基序列设计黑刺粉虱特异性引物1对(AS-F518/AS-R938), 其扩增片段为421 bp。种特异性检验结果显示, 该对引物只对黑刺粉虱的基因组具有扩增能力, 对同域发生的桔绿粉虱 Dialeurodes citri (Ashmead)以及其他种类的粉虱如烟粉虱Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) B型、Q型、ZHJ-1型和ZHJ-2型, 温室粉虱Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood)以及螺旋粉虱Aleurodicus disperses (Russell)等的基因组不具有扩增效果。该引物不仅对成虫具有良好的扩增效能, 对卵、2龄若虫和拟蛹等亦具有同样的扩增能力, 其最低检出限为1/1 920头成虫。该技术体系的建立在茶树和柑桔苗木调运的害虫检疫和监测/检测中具有重要意义。  相似文献

记述了采自云南蚊科3新种,即:蓝带蚊属伪费蚊亚属一新种瞿氏蓝带蚊Uranotaenia (Pseudoficalbia) qui Dong, Dong et Zhou, sp. Nov.,采自西双版纳优乐山竹穴积水中,与新糊蓝带蚊Ur. Novobscura Barraud和二斑蓝带蚊Ur. Bimaculata Leicester近缘;领蚊属一新种类孟连领蚊Heizmannia (Heizmannia) menglianeroides Dong, Dong et Zhou, sp. Nov.,采自云南省景洪县森林竹筒积水中,与孟连领蚊Hz. Menglianensis Lu et Gong, 1986为近缘;库蚊属泰蚊亚属一新种陈氏库蚊Culex (Thaiomyia) cheniDong, Wang et Lu, sp. Nov.,采自云南西北部海拔1795 m的腾冲县竹筒积水,与海南库蚊Cu. By means of hand pollination experiments and fluorescence microscopythe breeding systems and pollen tube growth were studied inDolichandra cynanchoides and Tabebuia nodosa, two bignoniaceousspecies of the Chaco woodland of NE Argentina. Both speciesabscised all selfed pistils within 4–8 d although selfpollen tubes grew successfully to the ovary and penetrated manyovules. Both species therefore show ‘late-acting self-incompatibility’(LSI) or ‘ovarian sterility’ (OS) type control ofselfing. LSI-OS has been reported in 17 species of the Bignoniaceae,and is also clustered in families such as the Bombacaceae-Sterculiaceae,Fabaceae and Myrtaceae. The implications of such family clusteringare discussed, with regard to current hypotheses for the actionof LSI-OS phenomena.
