Aromatic plants attract the attention of many researchers worldwide due to their worthy applications in agriculture, human prosperity, and the environment. Essential oil (EO) could be exploited as effective alternatives to synthetic compounds as it has several biological activities including allelopathy. The EO from the aerial parts of Rhynchosia minima was extracted by hydrodistillation and investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Different concentrations (50, 100, 150 and 200 μL L−1) of the EO were prepared for investigation of their allelopathic potential on two weeds; Dactyloctenium aegyptium and Rumex dentatus. Twenty‐eight compounds, mainly sesquiterpenes (69.13%) were determined. The major compounds are α‐eudesmol, 2‐allyl‐5‐tert‐butylhydroquinone, caryophyllene oxide, trans‐caryophyllene, and τ‐cadinol. The EO from the Rminima showed a significant inhibition of Daegyptium and Rdentatus germination, while the seedling growth was stimulated. Therefore, it is not recommended to treat these noxious weeds with the EO of Rminima before the germination. In contrast, the apparent stimulatory effect on the seedling growth offers further studies to use the EO of Rminima to enhance the fitness of different economic crops. However, characterization of green bio‐herbicides such as EO (allelochemicals) from wild plants raises a new opportunity for the incorporation of new technology of bio‐control against the noxious weeds.  相似文献

Rumex dentatus L. and Polygonum glabrum Willd. (Polygonaceae) are important weeds of wheat and rice fields, respectively, in India and Pakistan. Adults and larvae of Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feed both weeds. Therefore, we studied the biology of G. placida on two weed leaves using age-stage, two-sex life table at 21 °C, 65 ± 5% r.h. and 12L: 12D. We also studied food utilization indices of G. placida on these leaves. Further, we investigated the quantities of nutrients (total carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, amino acids and nitrogen) and antinutrients (total phenols, flavonols and tannins) of the leaves. Correlation analysis suggested that fecundity and the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of G. placida were positively correlated with nutrients of leaves, while negatively correlated with antinutrients. Faster larval development, higher longevity of adults and greater fecundity of G. placida were recorded on R. dentatus than P. glabrum. The rm was higher on R. dentatus than P. glabrum. The nutrients were greater in R. dentatus than P. glabrum, while antinutrients were lower in R. dentatus than P. glabrum. The growth rate and consumption index were greater on R. dentatus than P. glabrum. The above results suggested that better nutritional quality of R. dentatus than P. glabrum influenced faster larval development, higher longevity of adults and greater fecundity of G. placida on R. dentatus. This study concluded that R. dentatus could be used for mass rearing of G. placida in biocontol program prior to release in fields for control of both these weeds.  相似文献

Chilling depresses seed germination and seedling establishment, and is one major constraint to grain yield formation in late sown winter wheat. Seeds of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were separately pre-soaked with sodium nitroprusside (SNP, as nitric oxide donor) and Gibberellic acid (GA3) before germination and then germinated under low temperature. SNP and GA3 pre-treatment increased seed germination rate, germination index, weights and lengths of coleoptile and radicle, while they decreased mean germination time and weight of seeds germinating under low temperature. Exogenous NO and GA3 increased seed respiration rate and promoted starch degradation along with increased amylase activities. In addition, efficient antioxidant systems were activated by NO, and which effectively reduced concentrations of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Seedling growth was also enhanced by exogenous NO and GA3 as a result of improved seed germination and maintenance of better reactive oxygen species homeostasis in seedling growing under chilling temperatures. It is indicated that exogenous NO was more effective than GA3 in alleviating chilling stress during seed germination and seedling establishment in wheat.  相似文献

Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) is mainly produced under rainfed but often sub-optimal moisture conditions in the Mediterranean basin. A set of 114 durum wheat recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from the cross of cultivars Omrabi5 × Belikh2 were tested for the ability to tolerate moisture deficiency at the germination and early seedling growth stage. The stress was imposed by exposing the germinating grain to 12 % polyethylene glycol. It induced a measurable reduction in root length, shoot length, and the percentage of normal seedlings. The germination and seedling growth of Belikh2 were more strongly inhibited than those of Omrabi5, and both parents were outperformed by > 50 % of the RILs. A quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was carried out by first assembling a linkage map from 265 informative microsatellites. Composite interval mapping revealed nine QTL spread over seven chromosomes. Five of these were associated with coleoptile length, and one of the five explained nearly 29 % of the relevant phenotypic variance. The coleoptile length was significantly correlated with the seedling growth, plant height, and thousand kernel mass derived from field-grown plants of the same RIL population.  相似文献

A number of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates were tested for their allelopathic potential against wheat. Most of the glucosinolates showed no activity against wheat, with the exception of glucobrassicin which was moderately active, as was sinapine thiocyanate. Isothiocyanates showed high activity against wheat germination and seedling growth. The most active compound, 2-phenethyl ITC completely inhibited wheat germination at 500 ppm. Allyl ITC showed high activity whereas other isothiocyanates tested were only moderately active. The data is discussed in relation to the possible use of some mustard species for effective weed control.  相似文献

The action of phytohormone producing bacteria and plant growth regulators on germination and seedling growth of wheat under saline conditions were studied. Seed dormancy enforced by salinity (100 mM NaCl) was substantially alleviated and the germination was promoted by gibberellin, auxin, zeatin, and ethephon from 54 to 97%. The IAA producing bacterial strains Pseudomonas aureantiaca TSAU22, Pseudomonas extremorientalis TSAU6 and Pseudomonas extremorientalis TSAU20 significantly increased seedling root growth up to 25% in non-salinated conditions and up to 52% at 100 mM NaCl, compared to control plants. It is concluded that growth regulators considerably alleviated salinity-induced dormancy of wheat seeds. The facts mentioned above make it possible to recommend root colonizing bacteria that produce phytohormone to alleviate salt stress of wheat grown under conditions of soil salinity.  相似文献

采用生物测定方法,对三七的自毒与化感作用进行初步研究。结果表明:(1)三七种子萌发过程中的自毒作用随其播种密度不同而有一定差异,但无明显规律性。三七种子萌发过程中的分泌物对油菜生长具有化感作用,主要表现为对油菜种子发芽率、发芽指数及苗高的抑制效应;(2)三七水浸液对不同受体植物的化感作用不尽相同,对小麦主要表现为对苗鲜重、苗干重、根鲜重、苗高及须根数有不同程度的促进或抑制作用;对油菜则表现为对其种子发芽率具有抑制作用,而对苗鲜重、苗干重、根鲜重、最长根长具有促进作用;(3)三七存在明显的化感自毒作用,其自毒物质可能为影响其连作的一个重要因素。  相似文献

Seed germination and seedling growth as well as chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of mustard and gram seeds were inhibited or reduced significantly due to the treatment of different concentrations (100, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 ng/ml) of aflatoxin B1. The range of inhibition in all the parameters was found to be directly influenced by the concentrations of toxin applied. In this research, hardaliye a traditional fermented Turkish beverage was produced by modification of traditional method and investigated for some properties.Lactobacillus sanfrancisco (LB16),Lactobacillus acetotolerans (LB21),Lactobacillus pontis (LB26),Lactobacillus paracasei ssp.paracasei (LB30) as starter cultures were added into pasteurised grape juice. Production of hardaliye using either white or black mustard seeds withLactobacillus paracasei ssp.paracasei LB30 reached to minimum pH value. It was determined that, lactobacilli which was added as starter cultures and mustard seeds had no clear effect on decrease in total sugar contents. During the 7-day fermentation period, lactic acid bacteria count in hardaliye, produced using white mustard seeds, changed from 4. 60, 4.69, 4.47 and 4.79 log CFU/ml to 4.92, 4.94, 5.90 and 6.83 log CFU/ml respectively and in the other samples, produced using black mustard seeds changed from 4.25, 4.07, 4.07 and 4.20 log CFU/ml to 6.60, 7.20, 6.54 and 6.77 log CFU/ml respectively.  相似文献

Allelochemicals are secondary metabolites which are not edible and can be used as growth regulators and bio-herbicides. The goal of current study was to assess allelopathic ability of Lantana camara (Sage-plant) flowers against weeds viz. Avena fatua (Wild oat), Euphorbia helioscopia (Sun-spurge), Chenopodium album (Goosefoot), Phalaris minor (Canary-grass), and Rumex dentatus (Knotweed). Bioassay analysis of three methanolic fractions of the Combiflash from L. camara was performed at 50%, 75% and 100% concentration using germination percentage parameters, inhibition of plumule and radicle size. The fraction II of Combiflash strongly suppressed all weeds with negligible effect on T. aestivum. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy was conducted for the fraction, and isolated compounds were used to perform bioassays. From fraction II GC–MS detected four methyl esters of allelopathic fatty acid viz. Methyl oleate, methyl palmitate, methyl stearate and methyl linoleate. The evaluation of physiological effects of the bioassay revealed substantial suppression of chlorophyll, antioxidant enzymes (superoxide, dismutase peroxidase) and protein material in all weeds by methyl palmitate. Bioassay activity and study of physiological parameters revealed that the effective bio-herbicidal compound in Lantana camara flowers is methyl palmitate. This is the first time that methyl palmitate (a fatty acid methyl ester) has been related to herbicidal activity in L. camara flowers. It is proposed that field studies based on hormesis research and the mechanism of action of this compound be carried out.  相似文献

测定了唐古特大黄(Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf.)药材水提液、蒽醌粗提液和多糖粗提液对小麦(Triticum aestivum Linn.)和垂穗披碱草(Elymus nutans Griseb.)种子萌发及幼苗生长的影响。结果表明:唐古特大黄药材水提液存在明显的化感作用,水提液在高浓度下对小麦种子萌发和芽长及垂穗披碱草种子萌发、根长和芽长均有明显的抑制作用,而在低浓度下对小麦的根长和芽长具有促进作用。蒽醌粗提液仅对垂穗披碱草幼苗生长有抑制作用,其作用随浓度的提高而增强。多糖处理液抑制了小麦、垂穗披碱草根的生长,同时高浓度的处理液延迟了垂穗披碱草种子发芽。  相似文献

In order to evaluate the allelopathic potential of Nepeta meyeri Benth., the effects of aqueous extracts (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5%) prepared from roots and leaves of N. meyeri were studied on the seed germination and seedling growth of several economically important crops (barley, wheat, canola, safflower, and sunflower). Both the root and leaf extracts of N. meyeri caused a general phytotoxic effect on the seed germination and seedling growth of barley and sunflower at all concentrations. However, both the root and leaf extracts significantly increased the seedling growth of wheat, especially at the lower concentrations 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5%, whereas the higher concentrations had a neutral effect. The seed germination and the seedling growth of canola and safflower were also generally improved by both extracts, especially at lower concentrations. However, these advantages were not observed at higher concentrations, at which the extracts mostly had a phytotoxic effect on canola and safflower. The Allelopathic activity of N. meyeri depended on whether the extract was derived from the leaf or root parts of the plant. The maximum allelopathic effect occurred with leaf extracts. The results demonstrate that the aqueous extracts from N. meyeri have allelopathic potential and should be evaluated as an allelopathic species, presenting a risk or advantage to seed germination and seedling growth of crop or weed plants.  相似文献

Although the functional roles of zinc finger-containing glycine-rich RNA-binding proteins (RZs) have been characterized in several plant species, including Arabidopsis thaliana and rice (Oryza sativa), the physiological functions of RZs in wheat (Triticum aestivum) remain largely unknown. Here, the functional roles of the three wheat RZ family members, named TaRZ1, TaRZ2, and TaRZ3, were investigated using transgenic Arabidopsis plants under various abiotic stress conditions. Expression of TaRZs was markedly regulated by salt, dehydration, or cold stress. The TaRZ1 and TaRZ3 proteins were localized to the nucleus, whereas the TaRZ2 protein was localized to the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, and cytoplasm. Germination of all three TaRZ-expressing transgenic Arabidopsis seeds was retarded compared with that of wild-type seeds under salt stress conditions, whereas germination of TaRZ2- or TaRZ3-expressing transgenic Arabidopsis seeds was retarded under dehydration stress conditions. Seedling growth of TaRZ1-expressing transgenic plants was severely inhibited under cold or salt stress conditions, and seedling growth of TaRZ2-expressing plants was inhibited under salt stress conditions. By contrast, expression of TaRZ3 did not affect seedling growth of transgenic plants under any of the stress conditions. In addition, expression of TaRZ2 conferred freeze tolerance in Arabidopsis. Taken together, these results suggest that different TaRZ family members play various roles in seed germination, seedling growth, and freeze tolerance in plants under abiotic stress.  相似文献

To understand how pulse and oilseed crops might use nitrogen (N) more efficiently under varying levels of water and N availability in soil, we conducted a 2-year field study to monitor N accumulation in aboveground (AG-N) and root material at five growth stages, for canola (Brassica napus L.), mustard (Brassica juncea L.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris Medicum) alongside spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Crops were grown in lysimeters (15 cm diameter × 100 cm deep) installed in the field in southern Saskatchewan, Canada. AG-N in all crops was greater under high-water than under low-water conditions. In oilseeds and wheat, AG-N increased until flowering then tended to level off, while in pulses it increased gradually to maturity. At maturity, dry pea and wheat had the greatest AG-N and mustard the least. Enhanced water availability increased seed N but did not affect straw N; consequently, N harvest index was greater under high-water than under low-water conditions. Root N increased until late-flowering or late-pod (dough stage in wheat) then decreased to maturity. Mustard had the lowest root N, chickpea the second lowest, and canola, wheat, dry pea, and lentil the highest. Improved water availability increased root N for oilseeds and wheat but did not affect root N in pulses. At maturity, average root N of oilseeds, pulses, and wheat was 14, 17, and 20 kg ha-1, respectively. At the seedling stage pulse crops had about 27% of total plant N in their roots, a much greater proportion than for the non-legumes. However, by maturity all crops had about 14% of plant N in their roots. Soil NO3-N increased gradually between seedling and maturity in non-legumes but in pulses there was a sharp spike at early flowering. Estimated apparent net N mineralized was similar for wheat and pulse crops which were greater than for canola and mustard. Soil N amounts and temporal change patterns varied substantially among crops evaluated, and these differences need to be considered in the development of diverse cropping systems where cereals, legumes, and oilseeds are included in rotation systems.  相似文献

The allelopathic effects of the two sesquiterpene lactones, costunolide and parthenolide, isolated from the leaves of Magnolia grandiflora L. were evaluated on the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and onion (Allium cepa L.). Seed germination of the test species was significantly reduced at 500 μg/ml by both compounds. Both sesquiterpenes showed pronounced inhibition of root length of the test species and the inhibitory effect was concentration-dependent. In addition, shoot growth of the four species was significantly inhibited at all the concentrations tested (10–500 μg/ml). Parthenolide reduced germination and inhibited seedling growth more than costunolide. Inhibition of root growth was generally greater than that of shoot growth. The results encourage the use of these sesquiterpenes as models for development of new herbicides.  相似文献

Seed germination and seedling growth, survivorship, and final biomass and their responses to watering interval were studied in two grass and six forb species to assess germination and seedling growth responses to increased soil moisture variability as might occur with future increases in precipitation variability. Seeds were planted in prairie soil and watered at 1, 2, 4, or 7 d intervals (I). Seed germination peaked at I = 4 d whereas leaf growth in grasses and forbs, and final biomass in grasses peaked at I = 7 d, suggesting that growth and biomass were favored at greater soil moisture variability than seed germination. Biomass responses to I were stronger than the germination responses, suggesting that soil moisture variability more strongly influenced post germination growth. Individual species responses to I fell into three groups; those with responses to I for: (1) seed germination and seedling survival, (2) biomass, or (3) both germination and biomass production. These species groups may be more useful than life form (i.e., grass/forb) for understanding seed germination and seedling dynamics in grasslands during periods of soil moisture variability. Seed germination and early growth may assume more importance in grassland plant community dynamics under more variable precipitation patterns.  相似文献

Justicia americana (L.) Vahl is one of the most common species associated with seasonally variable aquatic habitats in the south-central U.S.A. When water levels decline, litter of Justicia decomposes on the exposed mudflats where most emergent aquatic species typically germinate and establish. In this study, we have tested the effects of aqueous leachates of Justicia shoots on the germination, seedling growth and established plant growth of Polygonum lapathifolium L., a common annual colonizer of exposed mudflats. Maximal leachate concentrations were prepared using quantities of litter comparable to those estimated for natural stands of Justicia. At these concentrations, seed germination and transplant growth were unaffected, but seedling growth was inhibited. When Polygonum was tested with lower concentrations of Justicia leachate, germination was still unaffected, but seedling growth was found to be enhanced, especially at the lowest concentrations. Using mannitol as an inert osmotic agent, Polygonum seedling growth was found to be inhibited at osmotic potentials equivalent to those of all leachate concentrations. Thus, the effects of leachate on seedling growth include both osmotic and non-osmotic components. Overall, the results support the hypothesis that the seedling stage of the plant life cycle is the stage most susceptible to permanent effects by the chemicals released from decomposing litter.  相似文献

Five different concentrations (100, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 μg/L of aflatoxin B1 were found to be inhibitory to seed germination and seedling growth (root and shoot lengths) of mustard seeds (variety Pusa bold). These also lowered the levels of chlorophyll and carotenoids in the emerging leaves during seedling growth. The inhibitory effect was correlated with the concentration of applied toxin.  相似文献

研究了侧柏(Platycladus orientalis)根、枝、叶、果实不同浓度水提取物及枝叶挥发油对油松种子萌发和幼苗生长的他感效应。结果表明:侧柏各器官及挥发油都含有化感物质,均对油松种子萌发及幼苗生长表现出“高抑低促”效应,而且低浓度时的促进作用明显强于高浓度时的抑制作用。与对照相比,在浓度为2 mg·mL-1时,侧柏根水提取物对油松幼苗根长和鲜重的促进能力最强,其根长和鲜重分别比对照提高了79.78%和376.60%;侧柏叶水提取物对油松幼苗苗高促进能力最强,比对照提高了102.41%;侧柏枝水提取物对油松种子发芽的促进能力最强,发芽率比对照提高了65.63%。而在浓度为30 mg·mL-1时,除了侧柏根和枝水提取物对油松种子萌发(87.50%)和鲜重(85.11%)表现出明显的抑制作用外,其它提取物对油松幼苗根长和苗高生长的抑制作用均不明显。侧柏枝叶挥发油对油松种子萌发,幼苗生长均表现为促进作用,特别对油松种子萌发具有显著的促进作用,其促进率达70.37%。说明侧柏和油松混交,可能有利于油松树木生长及生产力的提高。  相似文献

Scatter hoarding of seeds by animals contributes significantly to forest-level processes, including plant recruitment and forest community composition. However, the potential positive and negative effects of caching on seed survival, germination success, and seedling survival have rarely been assessed through experimental studies. Here, I tested the hypothesis that seed burial mimicking caches made by scatter hoarding Central American agoutis (Dasyprocta punctate) enhances seed survival, germination, and growth by protecting seeds from seed predators and providing favorable microhabitats for germination. In a series of experiments, I used simulated agouti seed caches to assess how hoarding affects seed predation by ground-dwelling invertebrates and vertebrates for four plant species. I tracked germination and seedling growth of intact and beetle-infested seeds and, using exclosures, monitored the effects of mammals on seedling survival through time. All experiments were conducted over three years in a lowland wet forest in Costa Rica. The majority of hoarded palm seeds escaped predation by both invertebrates and vertebrates while exposed seeds suffered high levels of infestation and removal. Hoarding had no effect on infestation rates of D. panamensis, but burial negatively affected germination success by preventing endocarp dehiscence. Non-infested palm seeds had higher germination success and produced larger seedlings than infested seeds. Seedlings of A. alatum and I. deltoidea suffered high mortality by seed-eating mammals. Hoarding protected most seeds from predators and enhanced germination success (except for D. panamensis) and seedling growth, although mammals killed many seedlings of two plant species; all seedling deaths were due to seed removal from the plant base. Using experimental caches, this study shows that scatter hoarding is beneficial to most seeds and may positively affect plant propagation in tropical forests, although tradeoffs in seed survival do exist.  相似文献
