Field-caged, post-anthesis populations of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum reduced grain weight of wheat by 14 and 7% respectively and induced changes in the senescence of the flag leaf. Spikelet number and grain number were unaffected as they are normally determined by pre-anthesis factors. Percentage grain protein was significantly reduced by both aphid species. The pattern of grain weight reduction within the ear was consistent with known limitations on the distribution of flag leaf assimilates among the grains. The relative effects of the two aphid species apparently resulted from the degree of nutrient drain imposed at particular feeding sites and the reduction in the leaf area duration of the flag leaf.  相似文献

Effective pest monitoring programmes are needed for providing reliable advice on when pest populations require active management. We studied whether suction‐trap catches of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae during the period 1989–2009 can be used to predict field infestations of this aphid in Swedish winter wheat fields. We found that suction‐trap catches of S. avenae until the time of crop heading (GS51) were significantly related to both number of aphids per tiller (R2 = 0.69 at GS 59 and R2 = 0.27 at GS 69) and proportion of fields with infestations above economic threshold (R2 = 0.49 at GS 59 and R2 = 0.40 at GS 69). This effect was consistent across Swedish regions and years. This information could be used by advisory services and farmers to decide whether field inspection to estimate the profitability of insecticide treatment at heading is needed. To improve the predictive ability further, suction‐trap catches could be combined with weather data and information about biological control potential in different landscapes.  相似文献

The reproduction of apterous and alate morphs of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum is compared on the basis of fecundity in 5- and 10-day periods of adult life. Apterae of both species are consistently more fecund than alatae of comparable weight, producing about three more nymphs on average in any 5-day period. The reproductive differences are related to the number and quality of embryos at eclosion and to ovulation rates, both of which in turn appear to be linked to wing-muscle maintenance. These relationships between weight, embryos and reproduction may be used to predict a newly moulted adult aphid's fecundity, a method which may facilitate the assessment of resistance to aphids in new cereal varieties, by obviating lengthy recording of reproduction. The strategies by which alatae of these and other aphid species minimize the difference between their fecundity and that of apterae are discussed.  相似文献

The great variability of the aphid life cycle and their tendency for host alternation gives rise to aphid clones and morphs. Inter‐ and intraclonal variability may be observed in the responses of aphids to various environmental factors. In this study we aimed to evaluate the influence of intrinsic factors (clone and morph type) on the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), and the bird cherry‐oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus). For each species four apterous clones were collected from established laboratory colonies and compared to assess their relative fitness on high‐ and low‐nitrogen wheat plants under laboratory conditions. The clones had significantly different intrinsic rates of increase on high‐ and low‐nitrogen plants. All R. padi clones had a higher intrinsic rate of increase and mean relative growth rate than S. avenae. Experiments were also conducted to compare the mean fecundity of apterous and alate morphs of S. avenae and R. padi clones on high‐ and low‐nitrogen wheat plants. On high‐nitrogen plants the apterous morphs of S. avenae clones had significantly higher mean fecundity than alate morphs. There were no significant differences between the mean fecundity of alate morphs of the same species on high‐ and low‐nitrogen plants. The results support the idea of better fitness of specific clones/morphs on certain host plants due to higher and lower intrinsic rates of increase.  相似文献

Jasmonate and salicylatemediated signaling pathways play significant roles in induced plant defenses, but there is no sufficient evidence for their roles in monocots against aphids. We exogenously applied methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA) on wheat seedlings and examined biochemical responses in wheat and effects on the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fab.). Application of MeJA significantly increased levels of wheat's polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase and proteinase inhibitor 1, 2 and 6 days after treatment. In twochoice tests, adult aphids preferred control wheat leaves to MeJA or SA treated leaves. Electrical penetration graph (EPG) recordings of aphid probing behavior revealed that on MeJAtreated plants, the duration of aphid's first probe was significantly shorter and number of probes was significantly higher than those on control plants. Also total duration of probing on MeJAtreated plants was significantly shorter than on control plants. Total duration of salivation period on SAtreated plants was significantly longer, while mean phloem ingestion period was significantly shorter than on control plants. However, no significant difference in total duration of phloem sap ingestion period was observed among treatments. The EPG data suggest that MeJAdependent resistance factors might be due to feeding deterrents in mesophyll, whereas the SAmediated resistance may be phloembased. We did not observe any significant difference of MeJA and SA application on aphid development, daily fecundity, intrinsic growth rate and population growth. The results indicate that both MeJA and SAinduced defenses in wheat deterred S. avenae colonization processes and feeding behavior, but had no significant effects on its performance.  相似文献

From 10°C to 25°C Sitobion avenae reared on wheat developed faster, had a higher mean relative growth rate and a higher intrinsic rate of increase on ears than on the flag leaves. At temperatures above 25°C there is a marked decline in the performance of the aphid. The intrinsic rate of increase is strongly correlated with the mean relative growth rate during development for both aphids reared on ears and flag leaves from 10°C to 25°C.  相似文献

Increasing intrafield plant diversity has been shown to regulate pest populations in various agroecosystems. Among the suggested mechanisms for this bottom-up pest control, the disruptive crop hypothesis states that herbivores' abilities to locate and colonize their host plants are reduced by the presence of non-host plants. Under laboratory conditions, we evaluated how intercropping wheat and legumes modifies the behaviour of apterous cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in terms of host plant location and population growth. We compared two intercropping systems – soft winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), associated with winter pea, Pisum sativum L., or with white clover, Trifolium repens L. (both Fabaceae) – and sole stands of soft winter wheat. Aphids needed more time to locate their wheat host plant and then spent less time on wheat when it was intercropped with clover. At the population level, and accounting for host plant biomass, only intercropping wheat with clover significantly reduced aphid densities on wheat, as this was particularly disruptive to S. avenae behaviour and population growth. Our laboratory study points out that the species used as non-host plants and their density are important parameters that should be taken into account in field studies on intercropping systems.  相似文献

The performance of clones of Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae from England and Spain was examined on drought-stressed tillering winter wheat in an environment chamber at 14 ± 1°C. Two different levels of drought stress and an unstressed control were established by different watering regimes which resulted in drought-stressed plants being smaller at the end of the experiment. The effect of drought stress to plants on aphid performance was not significantly different between the clones tested. Drought stress had no effect on aphid development time, nymphal mortality, the weight of teneral adults and the number of embryos in teneral adults up to the onset of reproduction in the first F1 generation. The subsequent reproductive capacity, as measured by the effective and potential fecundity, and the reproductive rate, were much reduced on drought-stressed plants. However, there was only a small decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm). Overall the clone of R. padi from Spain performed better than that from England, the development and prereproductive times being shorter and the fecundity higher in the Spanish clone, giving a higher rm. There were no differences in the fecundity and the rm between the Spanish and the English clones of S. avenae. The proportion of the F2 generation that was alate differed greatly between clones, and only the English S. avenae produced significantly more alatae on drought-stressed than on unstressed plants.  相似文献

Species belonging to the same guild (i.e. sharing the same resources) can reduce the negative effects of resource competition through niche partitioning. Coexisting species may differ in their resource exploitation and in the associated allocation of nutrients, depending on their resource niche. Trade-offs in nutrient allocation, such as between reproduction and survival, or between early and late reproduction, are moderated by the abundance and distribution of resources. In this study we investigate differences in larval resource exploitation and adult reproductive strategy of two sympatric aphid parasitoids sharing a common host. The habitat specialist Aphidius rhopalosiphi and the generalist Aphidius avenae occur in cereal crops of Western Europe, where both species attack the major host resource: the grain aphid Sitobion avenae. For this purpose, we measured their acquisition of capital lipid resources, their age-specific fecundity and reproductive effort, their life span and their metabolic rate. We found that these species do not differ neither in larval lipid accumulation nor in the number of eggs at emergence and the timing of egg production, but diverge in other adult reproductive strategies. The rate of adult egg production was higher in A. rhopalosiphi than A. avenae, but at the expense of producing smaller eggs. Throughout adult life, reproductive effort was higher in A. avenae, perhaps facilitated by its higher metabolic rate than A. rhopalosiphi. The divergence between species in life history syndromes likely reflects their adaptations to their resource niche. A high egg production probably allows the specialist A. rhopalosiphi to exploit more S. avenae individuals in cereal crops, while the generalist A. avenae because of its variety of hosts, maximizes the investment per egg but at the expense of a lower lifespan. Our results suggest that differential resource allocation may be a more common pattern that promotes coexistence of species within a guild.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertiliser on populations of the cereal aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum on winter wheat was investigated in a three year field experiment. Naturally occurring aphid populations were monitored on three nitrogen treatments; none, nitrogen application using Canopy Management guidelines (130–210 kg ha-1) and conventional practice (190 kg ha-1). Inoculations of laboratory reared S. avenae were used to enhance field populations on half the plots. Natural populations of M. dirhodum remained below the current UK spray threshold level of two-thirds of shoots infested at the start of flowering, or five aphids per shoot in all years, whilst populations of S. avenae exceeded the threshold in all years. The response of the two species to nitrogen differed. Significantly higher populations of M. dirhodum were recorded in both treatments which received nitrogen in all years, whilst the response of S. avenae varied between years. In 1994 and 1995 when environmental conditions favoured aphid development, higher populations were recorded in the two treatments which received nitrogen. In 1993 when high rainfall created unfavourable conditions, higher populations were recorded in the plots receiving no nitrogen. Differences in peak density and cumulative aphid index of S. avenae resulted from differences in the rate of population increase between ear emergence and peak density on the different treatments. Populations prior to ear emergence were higher in the plots which received nitrogen but the differences were not statistically significant. There was no evidence of a difference in the timing of population decline in the different treatments. In 1993 higher levels of infection by entomopathogenic fungi were observed in all treatments. Significantly higher levels of infection were recorded in the treatments receiving nitrogen, which may have accounted for the lower S. avenae populations recorded. It is possible that the larger canopies recorded in these treatments produced conditions which favoured infection by fungi, thereby limiting aphid population growth. The results indicate that application of nitrogen increases natural populations of M. dirhodum, and under favourable conditions, populations of S. avenae. However, in suboptimal climatic conditions, the application of nitrogen fertiliser can lead to lower populations of 5. avenae. The data also suggest that there is no consistent difference between a conventional and Canopy Managed approach to nitrogen fertiliser use in terms of the risk of infestation by cereal aphids.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Recommended and reduced rate applications of pirimicarb and alpha‐cypermethrin were applied to winter wheat crops to control summer infestations of grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) and rose‐grain aphid (Metopolophium dirhodum). 2 Aphid numbers were assessed weekly and the yield response to treatment application was compared with accumulated aphid days on the crop. 3 Responses to aphicide treatment varied between sites according to variations in the subsequent development of aphid populations under varying weather conditions and differential pressures from aphid natural enemies. 4 Alpha‐cypermethrin treatment reduced spider density at most sites, and also resulted in a resurgence of aphid populations at three sites.  相似文献

From a previous worldwide screen of wheat cultivars as seedings, five were selected to encompass a wide concentraiton range of the hydroxaminc acid DIMBOA (0.99-8.07 mmol Kg -1 fr. wt). Compared with those in seedings, the concentrations of DIMBOA in flag leaves of the same cultivars were relatively low (0.06-0.87 mmol kg-1 fr. wt). Concentraions of hydroxamic acids in whole ears at anthesis and the early milk stage were even lower, ranging from undetectable to 0.05 mmol kg-1 fr. wt. The three-day mean relaive growth rate (MRGR) was determined for nymphs of Sitobion avenace on the flag leaf (GS 39) and on the ear (GS 60-60) of the five cultivars. No significant differences in MRGR were found between cultivatrs at the same growth stage, although MRGR was higher on ears on than on flag leaces. The results are discussed in realtion to the potential of hydroxamic acids in programmses aimed at breeding mature-plant aphid resistance into wheat cultivars.  相似文献

The effect of wheat resistance in lines of Triticum monococcum L., on the reproductive performances of the cereal aphid (Sitobion avenae F.) was investigated. Aphids were reared from birth to adult moult either on resistant or susceptible wheat lines, and transferred as apterae to both host genotypes. The influence of these transfers on the subsequent adult weight, gonad status and reproductive performances was evaluated. Aphids transferred from resistant to susceptible plants proved able to compensate for their poor nymphal growth, mainly through additional embryo growth and an increase in the number of matured embryos within the first 10 days of their adult life. Most aphids transferred from susceptible to resistant plants died within the first week following the transfer. Their most advanced embryos matured and were born, but subsequent embryo growth was quickly reduced. The reproductive strategies adopted by S. avenae when facing plant resistance, and the hypothesis of a resistant mechanism based on a poor nutritional state of the resistant plants are discussed.  相似文献

Resistance to the aphid Sitobion avenae F. was assessed on six wheat cultivars of known concentrations of total hydroxamic acids. A range of values for intrinsic rate of increase (rm) were obtained, 96% of the variation in which was explained by acid concentrations. Of the components of rm, age-specific fecundity was the most significant factor contributing to resistance.  相似文献

Peroxidases (POXs) make up a large superfamily of enzymes that act in a wide range of biological mechanisms, including maintaining appropriate redox balances within cells, among other actions. In this study, we cloned a sequence that encodes a POX protein, SaPOX, from wheat aphids, Sitobion avenae. Amino acid sequence alignment showed the SaPOX sequence was conserved with POXs from other insect species. SaPOX mRNA accumulations were present in all nymphal and adult stages, at higher levels during the first and second instar, and lower during later stages in the life cycle. Ingestion of dsRNA specific to POX led to reduced SaPOX mRNA accumulation. Sitobion avenae nymphs continuously exposed to dietary dsPOX via an artificial diet led to reduced survival rate and ecdysis index. We infer that POX is important to maintain the growth and development of S. avenae.  相似文献

为了探究高压静电场对麦长管蚜Sitobion avenae Fabriciusde的影响。采用特定年龄生命表的方法,设置2、4、6 k V/cm辐射强度处理小麦种子和出生24h内的1龄若蚜。统计连续20代电场胁迫后麦长管蚜生命表种群参数、繁殖参数以及存活率的变化。结果表明:(1)经高压静电场处理后麦长管蚜的内禀增长率(r)在2 k V/cm和4 k V/cm强度时受影响显著(P0.05),但两者表现的世代不同,2 k V/cm和4 k V/cm的最低值分别出现在第20代和第10代。(2)麦长管蚜的净增值率(R0)、平均世代周期(T)、繁殖力(F)、成虫寿命和产仔天数等参数均呈现前期受高压静电场影响各处理组均显著低于对照组(P0.05),随着世代的增加高压静电处理组与对照组无显著差异。(3)麦长管蚜的特定年龄阶段存活率曲线受世代和高压静电场强度的影响显著。研究结论:麦长管蚜的生长发育和繁殖受世代和高压静电场强度的双重影响,且两者具有交互效应。研究的创新点在于:模拟自然条件下(同时对植物和昆虫进行高压静电场辐射处理)高压静电场对麦长管蚜的影响,为蚜虫生态遗传进化和生态控蚜提供理论依据。  相似文献

In 1983, cereal plants showing symptoms of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), collected from 15 localities in Sweden, were tested for BYDV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antisera against two Swedish isolates of BYDV were used, a mild isolate (27/77) transmitted specifically by Sitobion avenae and a severe one (39/78) transmitted mainly by Rhopalosiphum padi. No virus was detected in 57 of 607 plants of oats and barley tested. Of the 550 plants in which virus was detected, 366 were infected with viruses similar to isolate 27/77, 116 with viruses similar to 39/78 and the remaining 68 reacted strongly with both antisera. When tested, the latter isolates were shown to be mixtures. Thirty-nine selected samples were also tested with antisera against the USA isolates RPV, RMV, MAV and PAV, and for transmission by S. avenae and R. padi. Twenty-six of these samples were transmitted specifically by S. avenae, one was transmitted only by R. padi and the remaining 12 samples were shown to be infected with a mixture of an S. avenae-specific isolate and one transmitted mainly by R. padi. Antisera against PAV and MAV each detected all isolates tested and the results were very similar to those with the antisera to the 39/78 and 27/77 isolates, respectively. None of the field isolates reacted with antisera against RMV or RPV. It was concluded that 1983 was an epidemic year for BYDV in Sweden and that isolates specifically transmitted by S. avenae predominated. Symptoms of infection by these isolates on oat plants ranged from mild to severe.  相似文献

Two Swedish isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), one (39/78) transmitted much more efficiently by Rhopalosiphum padi than by Sitobion avenae and the other (27/77) transmitted specifically by Sitobion avenae, were purified with yields of 200–300 μg/100 g infected oat leaves. Three light scattering zones were obtained when isolate 39/78 was sedimented in 10–40% (w/w) sucrose density gradients but only one zone with the other isolate. The sedimentation coefficients of 39/78 particles were 94,106 and 150 S, respectively, whereas the 27/77 particles sedimented at 110 S. Four protein bands of mol. wts 31 900, 29 700, 28 000 and 15 000 were detected when disrupted 150 5 particles of the 39/78 isolate were electrophoresed in SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Only one major band of mol. wt 24 500 was detected when 94 or 106 S particles were electrophoresed under the same conditions. The 27/77 isolate yielded one major band of mol. wt 23 500. A weak serological relationship was found between isolates 39/78 and 27/77. In enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, isolate 39/78 was serologically closely related to New York isolate PAY, whereas 27/77 was closely related to MAY.  相似文献

Differences were observed in the total fecundity and patterns of reproduction of four morphs of Sitobion avenae (F.). The reproductive rates of apterous and alate exules declined gradually with time but decreased rapidly in gynoparae and oviparae. Under short daylengths apterous exules gave birth in three phases; the first consisting mainly of gynoparae, the second of males and the third of non-gynoparous viviparae. The strategic importance of the sequence of morphs and the reproductive behaviour of each is discussed in relation to the maximization of overwintering population size.

Résumé Des différences ont été observées entre les fécondités totales et les modes de reproduction de quatre types de Sitobion avenae. Les taux de reproduction diminuent graduellement dans le temps chez les aptères et ailés virginopares et rapidement chez les gynopares et ovipares. En photophases courtes, les virginopares aptères donnent naissance à trois types: le premier composé essentiellement de gynopares, le second de mâles et le troisième de vivipares. L'importance stratégique de la succession des types et du comportement reproducteur de chacun est discutée en relation avec l'accroissement maximum de la taille de la population hivernante.

The trends in population density of Sitobion avenae in wheat fields were analysed for a total of 32 sites over the period 1975 to 1983 in eastern England and the Netherlands. The peak population density on each field was positively correlated with the population densities at the end of ear emergence, mid-anthesis and the end of anthesis. It was also positively correlated with the observed rates of increase of the aphids on the crop immediately before these stages. Both parameters were incorporated in multiple regressions to forecast peak population density, and data from a further nine populations monitored in 1984 was used to validate the model. The accuracy of these forecasts, based on two counts on the crop, increased from ear emergence to the end of anthesis, the forecast at mid-anthesis of peak density being much more accurate than any other published method.  相似文献
