Exotic species become invasive aliens when they have an adverse effect on the community of the recipient ecosystem, and their spread among closed water systems is of recent concern for the conservation of native biodiversity in Japan. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu Lacepède) is recognized as one of the worst 100 alien species, being undesirable because of its trophic level as a top predator. Smallmouth bass that have been illegally introduced into Lake Aoki, central Japan, in the 1990s for the purpose of sports fishing have seriously affected the lower trophic levels in the lake including fisheries resources, while a strong effort to remove them has proved to be limited in usefulness. We intended to identify indigenous agents that have a potential to control smallmouth bass in the lake. Snorkeling observations in the daytime revealed that Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis Günther) intruded into smallmouth bass spawning nest as a school and were able to consume the eggs while the male bass was guarding the nest. Consequently, the proportion of lost eggs owing to the predation reached 92.4% per clutch on average, proving that native cyprinids are able to function as an efficient egg predator that reduces the survival of smallmouth bass. We consider that employing the indigenous egg predator can be a practical means to eradicate exotic smallmouth bass, combined with the removal of stones on the nest as a subsidiary step to expose smallmouth bass eggs to predation by Japanese dace.  相似文献

Annual egg production in eastern Baltic cod Gadus morhua callarias in 1966–2000 has been assessed. A significant relationship between egg production and recruitment, progeny survival index, and 11psu-isohaline depth has been revealed. Comparison of egg production and spawning stock biomass indices has shown the time difference in their maxima and the absence of significant correlation between them. This difference is assumed to be due to an increase in the share of mature individuals that did not participate in spawning in the late 1970s–early 1980s. The determination of potential egg production, taking into account the share of individuals that spawn during the current year, yielded a significant positive relationship between its value and spawning stock biomass.  相似文献

Smallmouth bass display size-specific variation in reproductive success with larger brood-guarding males in a population more likely to rear offspring to independence than smaller individuals. The exact mechanisms responsible for this size-specific increase in reproductive output have yet to be identified. To assist in this process, we investigated the relationship between the size of brood-guarding male smallmouth bass and offspring quality (in this case, egg physiology, egg morphology, egg size, hatching success and lab survival). Further, we examined how factors such as egg physiology, egg morphology and egg size influenced reproductive success in the wild and hatching success in a controlled laboratory environment. Nesting male smallmouth bass that successfully reared their offspring to independence spawned earliest in the nesting period were the largest individuals, and guarded eggs with greater concentrations of cortisol compared to males that abandoned their offspring prematurely. Offspring survival in the laboratory was not correlated with offspring survival in the wild, indicating that caution should be used interpreting studies that attempt to relate laboratory-derived survival metrics to the wild. Together, results demonstrate size-specific differences in offspring quality for nesting smallmouth bass, which are correlated with higher concentrations of cortisol in eggs. However, hatching success under laboratory conditions was dissimilar to nesting success in the field relative to cortisol concentrations.  相似文献

The diameter and dry weight of the eggs of haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus , are positively correlated with fish length. The correlations are largely due to the fact that many of the smaller fish that were sampled were 2 years old, and the eggs of these young haddock, which can be regarded as precocious spawners, are significantly smaller and lighter than those of older fish. The relative fecundity of 2–year–old haddock (274 eggs g−1) is also lower than that of the other age classes (493 eggs g−1); this has important implications for the estimation of egg production from female spawning stock biomass. It is pointed out that in some years precocious spawners represent a large component of the North Sea haddock spawning stock. When the annual egg production of this stock is calculated, it may be appropriate to apply a weighting factor to the number of eggs contributed by the 2–year–olds, on the assumption that the small eggs of these fish produce larvae that are less viable than those of older haddock.  相似文献

Synopsis The hypothesis that variation in a paternal trait associated with offspring survival will result in female mate choice based on that trait was tested in rock bass,Ambloplites rupestris, a temperate fresh water fish with uniparental male care. The number of eggs acquired by 108 nesting male rock bass, in Cranberry Lake (New York State, U.S.A.), was estimated in two different spawning episodes that differed in the size structure of the nesting male stock. Early breeders (between the 4–7 June 1989) were mainly medium and large males (101–300 g), as compared to late breeders (between the 19–21 June 1989) which were mostly small (50–100 g). Because survival of larvae in rock bass is significantly lower in nests guarded by small males as compared to nests guarded by medium and large males, it was hypothesized that female mate choice should have been (1) size-based, and (2) more intense late in the season when the nesting stock was comprised mostly of small males. The results were consistent with these hypotheses. Variation in egg numbers per nest was significantly higher during the late spawning episode. In addition, egg number per nest were normally distributed during the early spawning episode, but were positively skewed and leptokurtic during the later episode. The correlation between male size and egg number was significant for both spawning episodes. However, during the late episode male size explained 23% of the variation in egg numbers versus only 8% of the variation during the earlier episode.  相似文献

Synopsis The evolutionary stability of simultaneous hermaphroditism depends in part on the existence of constraints on the potential for male mating success. In the seabasses (Serranidae), several species of simultaneous hermaphrodites divide each day's clutch of eggs into parcels that are spawned sequentially and alternately with a partner. This behavior is thought to be one source of constraint on male mating success. A possible related source is the pattern of egg production. A study was therefore performed on the chalk bass,Serranus tortugarum, to examine this pattern. The results indicate that eggs are readied for spawning gradually over the course of the daily spawning period. The pattern of egg production acts jointly with spawning behavior in constraining male mating success. This pattern may be a pre-existing state to which the mating system has been adjusted, or it may have co-evolved with the mating system.  相似文献

Synopsis Successful production of young in smallmouth bass,Micropterus dolomieui, nests varied between 33 and 88 percent over two years. Six variables were measured at each successful smallmouth bass nest. Discriminant analysis indicated that the combined influences of these variables differed between years. Canonical coefficients determined that hours of strong wind followed by degree-days contributed to the observed difference. Nest success was higher when the total hours of wind stronger than Beaufort force 4 was low during offspring development. Higher degree-day values during offspring development were recorded in the more successful year.  相似文献

The effect of various doses of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) ranging from 1 to 100 μg/kg body weight on the spawning response of mature female sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch) was tested. A single intramuscular injection of LHRHa resulted in a dose-related increase in the spawning rate (number of spawnings of each fish over four consecutive days) of mature fish. An LHRHa dose of 5 μg/kg and less induced low spawning rates of 16.7% to 37.5% or at least one spawning every four days. However, mature sea bass spawned more than once (43.8–58.3%) in four days at dose levels of 10 μg/kg and above. Hormone treatment within the dose range tested did not influence the number, fertilization and hatching rates of spawned eggs. The influence of initial oocyte size on the LHRHa-induced spawning response of mature sea bass was also examined. Sea bass with an initial oocyte diameter of 0.30–0.39 mm did not respond to the single injection of 100 μg LHRHa/kg. In contrast, LHRHa induced spawning among sea bass with an initial egg size of 0.40–0.49 mm, although two of four sea bass of the same stage of ovarian maturity spawned spontaneously. Fish having an initial oocyte size of 0.50–0.55 mm spawned with and without LHRHa treatment. Spontaneous spawning among saline-injected sea bass occurred at a later time (24–58 h post-injection) compared to fish induced to spawn by a single injection of LHRHa (8–36 h post-injection). The initial spawning response time interval for fish with an initial egg size of 0.50 mm or greater was further reduced to 8–9 h by LHRHa. These results indicate that LHRHa can successfully induce spawning in mature female sea bass which have attained a critical oocyte diameter and that the spawning response interval is reduced with a further increase in egg size beyond the critical oocyte diameter limit.  相似文献

The problem of egg size variations in the Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita has been studied in relation to the different seasons of the year and to the different spawning centres within the geographical area. It has been stated that there exist significative differences in egg dimensions between the northern and the southern spawning centre of the reproduction area. Taking into account other biological characteristics of the anchovy from both centres it is suggested that these variations could indicate that the spawning stock is divided into two main genetic groups. It has been found that the average size of anchovy eggs decreases as the spawning season progresses.  相似文献

Among egg trading hermaphrodites, any factor which limits the number of eggs released by a female role hermaphrodite can potentially limit the mating success of the male role hermaphrodite fertilizing those eggs. This work examines the hypothesis that the timing of ovulation constrains the size of egg parcels and thereby limits male mating success in the egg parceling hermaphroditic fish Serranus subligarius. Two alternatives were evaluated: (1) Ovulation is a discrete event preceding spawning. It does not constrain the size of egg parcels and therefore does not limit mating success of male role partners. (2) Ovulation is an incremental process occurring throughout the spawning period. It limits the number of eggs available for release in each parcel and thereby limits mating success of the male role partner. Assessment of ovulation was conducted in a field stock of S. subligarius. Fish from size matched pairs were manually stripped at the onset of the spawning period or quarantined and sampled at the end of the spawning period. Fish sampled at either time point had the same number of eggs, suggesting that ovulation was a discrete event occurring at the onset of the spawning period. The diurnal cycle of ovulation was observed in naturally spawning hermaphrodites captured at intervals throughout the day. Ovulation began 2–4 h before spawning began. Some fish appeared to ovulate the entire day's clutch of eggs before spawning, while other fish released egg parcels before completing ovulation. I conclude that the pattern of ovulation is not uniform throughout the spawning stock. Because of the variability in timing of ovulation relative to parcel release, ovulation does not consistently limit the size of egg parcels and therefore is unlikely to be a physiological limit to male role mating success in S. subligarius hermaphrodites.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine how size, age, somatic and reproductive condition, abundance and egg production of southern calamary spawning aggregations changed during the spawning season in each of 2 years. During the spawning period in at least one of the years there was a decline as much as 20% in average size, 50% in somatic condition, 28–34% in size-at-age, 26–29% in reproductive status, as well as abundance and reproductive output of the stock declining during the spawning season. However, this change was not a function of the population becoming reproductively exhausted, as the aggregation was composed of different individuals with different biological characteristics. In each month the average age of individuals was ca. 6 mo, indicating that squid that had hatched at different times had entered the spawning aggregations, suggesting that the aggregation was made-up of a succession of microcohorts. Currently, management of many squid populations assumes that there is a single cohort in the aggregation. Therefore, estimating stock biomass at the start of the spawning season cannot be used as the population is constantly changing as micro-cohorts move into the aggregation. An instantaneous estimate of the spawning biomass, independent of fishing activity may be obtained by quantifying the density of deposited eggs. The strategy of individuals with a diversity of life history characteristics coming together in a single spawning aggregation may ensure the phenotypic and genetic diversity required to guarantee successful recruitment of this short-lived species. Therefore, temporally structured protection from harvest throughout the spawning season will ensure maintenance of this population diversity.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of abrupt temperature change on the hatching success and larval survival of eggs, yolk-sac larvae (YSL) and larvae above nest (LAN), for both largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were quantified. Temperature had a significant effect on hatching success and time to 50% mortality, with large heat shocks causing accelerated mortality. The temperature changes shown to influence survival of all life stages, however, were beyond what is typically experienced in the wild. Micropterus salmoides had greater egg hatching success rates and increased survival rates at YSL and LAN stages, relative to M. dolomieu. Additionally, egg hatching success and survival of LAN varied across nests within the study. These findings suggest that temperature alone may not account for variations in year-class strength and may emphasize the need for protection of the nest-guarding male Micropterus spp. to ensure recruitment.  相似文献

An individual-based model of nesting smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, is used to predict the effects of water level fluctuations on reproductive success. The model simulates daily nest site selection, spawning, nest guarding, and development and survival of eggs, embryos, and larvae until dispersal. The model was configured for Brownlee Reservoir, Idaho-Oregon. Each reservoir bank is represented as a rectangular grid of cells, with each cell characterized by an assigned slope, substrate, and elevation, and by a water depth that varied daily. Nest site (cell) selection is determined from a habitat suitability index (HSI) based on substrate, slope, and depth. Development of young is temperature-dependent. Mortality of young occurs via attrition, abandonment by the guarding male, and probabilistic whole-nest catastrophe. Simulations were performed that used observed data for 1991 to 1996. Model predicted nest habitat selection and egg-to-dispersal survival rates were similar to observed values. Additional model simulations showed that: (1) nest habitat selection was best predicted when depth, slope, and substrate were considered together rather than singly, (2) egg-to-dispersal survival was related to the magnitude of water level fluctuations during the peak spawning period, (3) relating mortality to HSI values resulted in lower survival, while relating growth to HSI values resulted in higher survival, and (4) spawning habitat is not limiting in Brownlee Reservoir. Suggestions for future monitoring of reservoir-based smallmouth bass populations are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of two haplotypes of the smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu; individuals used in the analysis were collected from nonindigenous populations in Japan. Both genomes comprised 16,488 bp, with genome contents and gene orders being identical to those of other teleost fishes. A previous study revealed that the Japanese smallmouth bass had only two haplotypes, and the present study revealed that the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the haplotypes differed in only one nucleotide difference. The low genetic diversity in the mtDNA of the smallmouth bass individuals in our study and the results of the mtDNA sequence comparison between the Japanese and the North American individuals suggested that the fish had been transplanted from a fish farm with a low-diversity stock.  相似文献

The striped bass Morone saxatilis population in the Savannah River (south-eastern U.S.A.) collapsed in the 1980s, and recent eorts to restore the population have resulted in increased catch-per-unit-eort (CPUE) of striped bass in the Savannah River Estuary (SRE). The abundance of eggs and larvae, however, remain well below historic levels. The primary cause of the population decline was remedied, and environmental conditions seem suitable for striped bass spawning. Regression analysis of data derived from ultrasonic imaging of 31 striped bass resulted in a statistical model that predicted ovary volume well (r2=0.95). The enumeration of oocytes from ovarian tissue samples and the prediction of ovary volume allowed fecundity to be estimated without sacrificing the fish. Oocyte maturation in Savannah River striped bass seemed to progress normally, with oocytes developing to final stages of maturity in larger fish (>750 mm L T). Additionally, fecundity estimates were comparable to a neighbouring striped bass population. The environmental cues needed to trigger development and release of striped bass oocytes into the SRE appeared to be present. If most of the striped bass females in the SRE are still young (<7 years), the ability to produce large numbers of eggs will be limited. As these young fish mature, egg production probably will increase and the density of striped bass eggs eventually will approach historic levels, provided suitable habitat and water quality are maintained.  相似文献

Adult Vinciguerria nimbaria in an area of the Atlantic Ocean (0–5°N; 10–20°W), collected from November 1994 to February 1998, exhibited two different patterns in diel behaviour: 'typical' behaviour which consisted of large diel vertical migration and 'atypical', characterized by concentrations of schools that remained in the surface layers during the daytime. The total life span of V. nimbaria was estimated at 6–7 months. Females were mature when they reached 30·6 mm standard length ( L S), which corresponded to an age of 85 days. Once the females were mature, spawning was continuous in the population as a whole, and V. nimbaria spawned continuously throughout the year. Spawning took place during two restricted times of the day: typical females spawned at dusk and atypical females spawned at dawn. Using the post-ovulatory follicles method, spawning frequency was estimated at 2 days. Batch fecundity was estimated at 1236 oocytes or 1230 oocytes g−1 of total body mass, and egg size was 650 µm whatever the period of the year. The lifetime fecundity of V. nimbaria was estimated at 9000 eggs (109 000 eggs if mortality rate was not taken into account), and the maximum stock egg production of a theoretical cohort occurred at 37 mm L S. Young adults thus contributed the most to the reproductive output for the survival of the population.  相似文献

Gonadal maturation, rematuration, and spawning of nine- (1982 stock) and ten-year-old (1981 stock) milkfish reared in 150 and 200 m3 concrete tanks were observed in 1990 and 1991. From 23 September to 9 November 1990, the 1981 stock spawned 15 times with an average daily collection of 61,000 ± 21,000 eggs. From 4 larval rearing trials, the mean overall survival rate (from eggs to 21 -day-old fry) was 9.68 ± 4.3%. From 25 Aril to 31 October 1991, the stock spawned a totaf of 108 times. Mean daily egg collection increasef to 305,000 ± 32,000. Successful rearing trials conducted during the latter part of the spawning season had a mean overall survival rate of 17 ± 3% (n = 17) indicating that mass fry production techniques can be improved. Spawning of milkfish broodstock in concrete tanks provides an alternative to other existing methods of seed production.  相似文献

We tested whether daily mortality rates (DMR) of smallmouth bass offspring were influenced by life interval, offspring density and growth, parental male attributes, and selected mortality factors during parental care in a regulated Virginia stream. Mortality averaged 9.5% per day (range 5.2–13.9%) and 94.1% total (range 80.9–99.5%) from egg deposition to the juvenile period (29–36 d) for individual broods. Offspring losses were primarily attributed to fungus (Saprolegnia parasitica) infection of eggs and to American eel, Anguilla rostrata, predation. DMR were significantly higher for the interval from swim-up of larvae to metamorphosis relative to earlier and later intervals. There was no significant autocorrelation of DMR among life intervals for individual broods, indicating that relative mortality rates were inconsistent among broods through time. DMR were also uncorrelated with the number of offspring per brood, offspring growth rates, and parental male attributes, except during egg and embryo intervals. Daily egg mortality was negatively related to male size and positively related to the number of eggs per nest, suggesting that density-dependent egg mortality may have been partially offset in nests of larger males. Larger males received more eggs, tended to maintain larger broods throughout parental care, and contributed a high proportion of the total number of juveniles reared. We examined the winter survival of age-0 smallmouth bass,Micropterus dolomieu, in lakes at their northern limit of distribution in New Brunswick, Canada. Pre- and post-winter collections over a 3 year period suggested the smallest individuals, <50 mm total length, died during winter under ice. Experiments with wild, age-0 smallmouth bass held in lakes demonstrated a size-dependent survival where smaller individuals had greater survival with an increasing temperature of exposure, but the largest individuals had reduced survival at warmer temperatures. Survivors lost 22–54% of pre-winter energy reserves measured as ash-free dry weight, which was similar to wild individuals captured in spring. Body size at the onset of winter affects survival, but it also appears that temperature interacting with a suite of environmental and biological factors affect changes in energy use and therefore survival of age-0 smallmouth bass under ice in winter.  相似文献
