Summary Three generations of upward selection for the egg mass/adult weight ratio were carried out in Tribolium castaneum. The experiment involved five lines: E — selected for increased egg mass; W — selected for decreased adult weight; R — selected for egg mass/adult weight directly; L — linear index selected with economic weights of m 2: -m 1 egg mass to adult weight (m 1 and m 2 are the means for adult weight and egg mass, respectively); NL — nonlinear index selected. Adult weight (7 days after adult emergence) and egg mass (between 7 and 11 days) were measured. The NL, E, and L lines had the greatest observed responses for the ratio; the R and W lines were not effective in improving the egg mass/adult weight ratio. It was expected that the NL line would be superior to the E, L, and R lines, and that the W line would respond the least. Observed response was significant for egg mass in the NL line, and for adult weight in the E, W, and R lines. Strong selection to increase egg mass seems to represent the optimal criterion for the ratio to be improved. The usefulness of nonlinear indices as selection criteria to improve a nonlinear trait, previously found to be optimal for a trait defined as the product of two component traits, appears to hold also for the selective improvement of the ratio of two traits. Serious limitations expected for direct selection of the ratio have been confirmed in this experiment.  相似文献

Summary Two-way selection for 21-day pupa weight was conducted in two highly inbred lines of Tribolium castaneum. The results, after 17 generations of selection, indicated that one of these lines (CSI-10) possessed a moderate amount of genetic variation for the trait selected (21-day pupa weight). When the selected populations were allowed to mate at random for 13 generations, the mean pupa weight regressed to values close to the means in the populations prior to selection. Reciprocal crosses between the high and low select lines revealed that 80% of the variation was associated with the sex chromosomes. The possibility that recurrent mutation was responsible for the genetic variation is discussed. It is concluded that natural selection favoring the heterozygous condition, rather than recurrent mutation, is responsible for the genetic variation. It is suggested that selection occurring between the sublines has reduced the rate at which the inbred line, CSI-10, is approaching complete homozygosity. The data have been taken from the doctoral thesis presented to the faculty of the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, by the senior author.Supported by NSFgrants G-1238, GB-5987 and NIH GM-16074.  相似文献

Variation in the subtle differences between the right and left sides of bilateral characters or fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been considered as an indicator of an organism’s ability to cope with genetic and environmental stresses during development. However, due to inconsistency in the results of empirical studies, the relationship between FA and stress has been the subject of intense debate. In this study, we investigated whether stress caused by artificial bidirectional selection for body size has any effect on the levels of FA of different morphological traits in Drosophila ananassae. The realised heritability (h2) was higher in low-line females and high-line males, which suggests an asymmetrical response to selection for body size. Further, the levels of FA were compared across 10 generations of selection in different selection lines in both sexes for sternopleural bristle number, wing length, wing-to-thorax ratio, sex comb-tooth number and ovariole number. The levels of FA differed significantly among generations and selection lines but did not change markedly with directional selection. However, the levels of FA were higher in the G10 generation (at the end of selection) than G0 (at the start of selection) but lower than the G5 generation in different selection lines, suggesting that the levels of FA are not affected by the inbreeding generated during the course of selection. Also, the levels of FA in the hybrids of high and low lines were significantly lower than the parental selection lines, suggesting that FA is influenced by hybridisation. These results are discussed in the framework of the literature available on FA and its relationship with stress.  相似文献

Summary The correlated responses in male and female sterility to 50 generations of individual selection for pupa weight in Tribolium were analyzed. Two replicate lines (S-lines) were selected for heavier pupa weight and stabilizing selection for pupa weight was practiced in two replicate control lines (C-lines). There was close agreement between replicates in both sets of lines for direct and correlated responses. The rate of inbreeding has been constant for all lines (approximately 0.5% per generation).Regression of generation means for pupa weight on generation of selection indicated a significant linear regression in the direct response for both lines. The linear increases of 46 and 55 g. per generation in the S-lines accounted for 98% of the variation among generations and the linear decreases of 5 and 10 g. per generation in the C-lines accounted for 70–90% of the variation in the generation means.Maximum likelihood estimators were used to calculate the frequency of male and female sterility for each generation and line. Average sterility in the base population ranged from about 4 to 12% for both sexes. Polynomial regressions of percent sterility on generation of selection showed that quadratic and higher order regressions were occasionally significant but accounted for a relatively small fraction of the total variation. In the two S-line replicates, linear regression coefficients of percent sterility on generation number were 0.16±.09 and 0.20±.07 for males and 0.72±.08 and 0.54±.08 for females, suggesting a larger correlated response in female than in male sterility. In the C-lines, linear regression coefficients were 0.02±.08 and –.12±.05 for males in the two replicates and –.05±.05 and –.05±.05 for females. Estimates of realized genetic correlations between pupa weight and sterility in the S-lines ranged from 0.04 to 0.14 for males and from 0.14 to 0.37 for females when the heritability of sterility was allowed to take on values from 0.05 to 0.25.Supported by NSF Grants G-1238 and GB-5987, NIH Grant GM-16074 and NIH Fellowship 1 FO2 GM4 5130-01.  相似文献

Summary Effects of errors in estimates of the genetic correlation on the accuracy of unrestricted, optimum, and desired gains selection indices were examined experimentally in Tribolium castaneum. Three lines were selected for three generations for pupal weight at 21 days and adult weight at 31 days, using unrestricted (I9), optimum (O9), and desired gains (G9) index selection methods. The genetic correlation between pupal and adult weights in the base population was 0.95. The optimum index was designed to set the response of pupal weight by a fixed amount, while in the desired gains index the responses of pupal and adult weights were specified as being equal to 31. Three other indices were constructed using a deliberately incorrect genetic correlation (0.25), i.e., unrestricted (I2), optimum (O2), and desired gains (G2). Responses observed in unrestricted index lines (I9 versus I2) and optimum index lines (O9 versus O2) did not differ significantly, even though lines I9 and I2 differed in a practical sense. Responses in desired gains index lines (G9 versus G2) differed significantly. Responses obtained for aggregate genotype (pupal weight + adult weight) and for the component traits were greater in line I9 than those obtained in line I2. Responses obtained in the O9 and O2 lines for pupal and adult weights were similar, while those obtained in the G9 and G2 lines were similar for pupal weight but not (P<0.05) for adult weight. Therefore, underestimation of the genetic correlation seems to affect the efficiency of a desired gains index more than that of unrestricted or optimum indices.  相似文献

Summary Directional selection for heavier pupa weight in Tribolium castaneum was practiced for 18 generations in two replicates of an inbred line, each separately maintained in small population cages for more than 90 generations. Mutational variance was estimated in two ways, based on Hill's (1982a) prediction equation for response to directional selection where an equilibrium state between effective population size and variation created by new mutation is assumed. Estimates of mutational variance based on response to selection in a selected population and from a sire-offspring regression analysis in an unselected control population were in strong agreement within each replicate population. Significant differences between the two replicates were observed. Estimates of the ratio of mutational variance to environmental variance ranged from 0.0002 to 0.0012, depending upon the assumptions made about effective population sizes maintained in the two replicate lines. Estimates of realized heritability from the 18 generations of selection were 0.23±0.02 and 0.12±0.02 in the two replicates. The results support the hypothesis that mutation may have played a significant role in supplying useful genetic variation for long-continuing response to selection for this trait in experiments reported earlier.  相似文献

Summary Four lines of Drosophila melanogaster previously selected for a stabilized phenotype of two extra dorsocentral bristles were examined for 20 generations of canalizing selection and relaxation of selection. A substantial frequency of flies with either two anterior or two posterior extra bristles was maintained in the relaxed lines. These patterns were the only ones tolerated by natural selection, i.e., the only symmetric ones. It was concluded that anterior and posterior dorsocentral bristles are two independent development structures, and the results are discussed in relation to two proposed genetic systems for bristle determination.  相似文献

Summary Five lines of Tribolium castaneum (flour beetle) were selected in each of three, replicates for biomass, using quadratic (Q) and linear (L) selection indices, direct selection for biomass (B) and indirect selection for each component trait, i.e. pupal weight (P) and family size (F), respectively, for five generations. The highest response in biomass was obtained in the Q line using an exact quadratic index in which the genetic value for each trait was based on information from both traits. The expected results were that Q selection would not exceed L selection while the L method would be superior with respect to direct selection for biomass (B line); P selection would be better and F selection worse than B selection. Selection was effective for pupal weight in the Q, L, B and P lines, but was not effective for family size, although the Q line increased slightly. The lines had no linear response for family size. Selection for biomass was influenced more by family size than by pupal weight. It is advantageous to include terms such as squares and products in the selection index, even though the response to selection may have been non-linear because of the low heritability of family size and an intermediate optimum for this component trait.  相似文献

Summary Triple-testcross experiments were used to analyze epistatic contributions to larva weight, pupa weight, pupa width and adult weight in Tribolium castaneum. Seven diverse inbred lines and the F1. produced by crossing the two tester lines were examined for indications of epistasis. Larva weight was the only trait for which no significant epistasis was detected. There was significant epistasis for pupa weight in three of the inbred lines; for pupa width in four of the inbred lines; for adult weight in five of the inbred lines. Only one inbred line and the F1 line failed to exhibit significant epistasis for any trait. Each inbred line had a unique pattern of epistasis, suggesting that a number of different loci were contributing to the detected epistasis. This paper (No. 76-5-158) is published with the approval of the Director of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

Summary Directional and stabilizing selection for developmental time (DT) were done for seven generations in replicated lines of Tribolium castaneum. There were no significant differences between sexes or among replicates in means or coefficients of variation. For directional selection, there were significant responses in both directions, measured as deviation from control, viz. -0.35±0.15 day per generation for Fast (F) and 0.73±0.15 day for Slow (S). The unselected control (C) and the stabilizing selection (I) lines were similar, with average response per generation not significantly different from zero. — Phenotypic variation, from the first generation, was larger in the S line than in the other three lines. The I line showed a significant decrease in phenotypic variation, due mainly to a decrease in genetic variance. The realized heritability was 0.219±0.045 for F and 0.324±0.036 for S, the difference being highly significant. — Correlated response in reproductive fitness (number of pupae produced) was significant only for S (rp=-0.88 and rG realized=-0.79). Regression of the correlated response on DT in this line was-19.28±4.77 pupae per day (phenotypic) and -28.77±10.06 pupae per day (genetic).  相似文献

Summary Replicated divergent selection based upon the time taken to recover from the larval alarm reaction in the mosquito Aedes aegypti resulted in lines which recovered faster and slower than the control lines. Estimates of the realized heritability were consistent, ranging from 0.21 to 0.24 in the fast replicates and 0.19 to 0.20 in the slow replicates. After 11 generations of selection an apparent change in the fitness was examined using an application of the path analysis. The relevance of the findings to natural selection is also discussed.  相似文献

Summary Six replicate lines of Drosophila melanogaster, which had been selected for increased abdominal bristle number for more than 85 generations, were assayed by hierarchical analysis of variance and offspring on parent regression immediately after selection ceased, and by single-generation realised heritability after more than 25 generations of subsequent relaxed selection.Half-sib estimates of heritability in 5 lines were as high as in the base population and much higher than observed genetic gains would suggest, excluding lack of sufficient additive genetic variance as a cause of ineffective selection in these lines. Also, there was considerable diversity among the six lines in composition of phenotypic variability: in addition to differences in the additive genetic component, one or more of the components due to dominance, epistasis, sex-linkage or genotype-environment interaction appeared to be important in different lines.Even after relaxed selection, single-generation realised heritabilities in four lines were as high as in the base population. As a large proportion of total genetic gain must have been made by fixation of favourable alleles, the compensatory increase of genetic variability has been sought in a genetic model involving genes at low initial frequencies, enhancement of gene effects during selection and/or new mutations.  相似文献

The pattern of genetic variances and covariances among characters, summarized in the additive genetic variance‐covariance matrix, G , determines how a population will respond to linear natural selection. However, G itself also evolves in response to selection. In particular, we expect that, over time, G will evolve correspondence with the pattern of multivariate nonlinear natural selection. In this study, we substitute the phenotypic variance‐covariance matrix ( P ) for G to determine if the pattern of multivariate nonlinear selection in a natural population of Anolis cristatellus, an arboreal lizard from Puerto Rico, has influenced the evolution of genetic variances and covariances in this species. Although results varied among our estimates of P and fitness, and among our analytic techniques, we find significant evidence for congruence between nonlinear selection and P , suggesting that natural selection may have influenced the evolution of genetic constraint in this species.  相似文献

Summary Bi-directional selection was carried out in coisogenic stocks with and without mobilised P element transposons to determine whether P elements induce quantitative genetic variation for inebriation time in Drosophila. There was significant response to 11 generations of selection in both pairs of replicates of bi-directional selection from an isogenic base stock in which P elements had been mobilised. Conversely, there was no significant response to 11 generations of identical selection in the control lines derived from a relatively inbred line lacking P elements. Thus, P elements have induced quantitative genetic variation for inebriation time.  相似文献

Adaptive importance of inversion polymorphism has been discussed in Drosophila species at several levels but no study has been carried out demonstrating the individual and combined effects of polymorphic inversions on the fitness of flies through bi‐directional selection. Therefore, artificial bi‐directional selection for thorax length in Drosophila ananassae was carried out for 10 generations. Both, Tukey test for selection difference and regression coefficients of offspring on mid‐parent are highly significant. The realized heritability (h2) in males of both high and low selection lines is more or less similar but is more pronounced in low line females, which suggests the asymmetrical response. This asymmetry in selection is discussed in the light of evidence provided by the study of chromosome inversion frequencies in different selection lines at different generations of selection. Interestingly, chromosome inversion frequency changes towards homozygosity for different gene arrangements in different selection lines. Tests of correlations at G6 and G10 among different gene arrangements as well as with mean thorax length suggest that 2L‐ST gene arrangement is negatively correlated, while 3L‐ST gene arrangement is positively correlated with thorax length. Furthermore, the present study shows the significant effects of 3L‐ST and 2L + 3L (positive correlation) on thorax length, while 3R‐ST and 2L + 3R show significant effect (negative correlation) on thorax length, which was not evident in the previous study. Present results also suggest how polymorphic inversions and their combinations affect the body size differently in different selection lines. These results suggest that thorax length in D. ananassae is under polygenic control and inversion polymorphism plays crucial role in maintaining body size by modifying genotypic frequency under various selection pressures.  相似文献

We examined the effects of pollen selection for rapid pollen-tube growth on progeny vigor. First, we crossed a wild gourd (Cucurbita texana) to a cultivated zucchini (Cucurbita pepo cv Black Beauty) to produce an F1 and then an F2 generation. Half of the F1 seeds were produced by depositing small loads of C. texana pollen onto the stigmas of C. pepo. These small pollen loads were insufficient to produce a full complement of seeds and, consequently, both the fast- and the slow-growing pollen tubes were permitted to achieve fertilization. An F2 generation was then produced by depositing small loads of F1 pollen onto stigmas of F1 plants. The F2 seeds resulting from two generations of small pollen loads are termed the non-selected line because there was little or no selection for pollen-tube growth rate on these plants. The other half of the F1 and F2 seeds were produced by depositing large pollen loads (>10 000 pollen grains) onto stigmas and then allowing only the first 1% or so of the pollen tubes that entered the ovary to fertilize the ovules. We did this by excising the styles at the ovary at 12–15 h after pollination. The resulting F2 seeds are termed the selected line because they were produced by two generations of selection for only the fastest growing pollen tubes. Small pollen loads from the F2plants, both the selected and the non-selected lines, were then deposited onto stigmas of different C. pepo flowers, and the vigor of the resulting seeds was compared under greenhouse and field conditions. The results showed that the seeds fertilized by pollen from the selected line had greater vegetative vigor as seedlings and greater flower and fruit production as mature plants than the seeds fertilized by pollen from the non-selected line. This study demonstrates that selection for fast pollen-tube growth (selection on the microgametophyte) leads to a correlated increase in sporophyte (progeny) vigor.  相似文献

Two-trait selection response with marker-based assortative mating   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Marker-based assortative mating (MAM) – the mating of individuals that have similar genotypes at random marker loci – can increase selection response for a single trait by 3–8% over random mating (RM). Genetic gain is usually desired for multiple traits rather than for a single trait. My objectives in this study were to (1) compare MAM, phenotypic assortative mating (PAM), and RM of selected individuals for improving two traits and (2) determine when MAM will be most useful for improving two traits. I simulated 20 generations of selecting 32 out of 200 individuals in an F2 population. The individuals were selected based on an index (SI) of two traits and were intermated by MAM, PAM, or RM. I studied eight genetic models that differed in three contrasts: (1) weight, number of quantitative trait loci (QTL), and heritability (h 2) for each trait; (2) linkage of QTL for each trait; and (3) trait means of the inbred parents of the F2. For SI and the two component traits, MAM increased short-term selection response by 5–8% in six out of the eight genetic models. The MAM procedure was least effective in two genetic models, wherein the QTL for one trait were unlinked to the QTL for the other trait and the parents of the F2 had divergent means for each trait. The loss of QTL heterozygosity was much greater with MAM than with PAM or RM. Consequently, the advantage of MAM over RM dissipated after 5–7 generations. Differences were small between selection responses with PAM and RM. The MAM procedure can enhance short-term selection response for two traits when selection is not stringent, h 2 is low, and the means of the parents of the F2 are equal for each trait. The comparative efficiency of four selection methods, viz., honeycomb (HC), pedigree selection (PS), single-seed descent (SSD) and the bulk method (BM), was assessed in three crosses of mungbean. The lines derived by each method, along with check varieties, were yield-tested in a compact family block design in F5 and F6 generations during summer and kharif of 1990. On the basis of the mean of the lines, the range, the number of superior lines over the best check, and the proportion of the top 10% lines in all the crosses and generations, the honeycomb method exhibited superiority over PS, SSD and BM for yield per plant and its component traits. PS, SSD and BM did not differ from each other. The honeycomb and SSD methods were found suitable for deriving superior lines for seed yield and pods per plant in mungbean.  相似文献

Summary Two lines of Tribolium castaneum were selected in each of three replicates for egg laying between 7 and 11 days after adult emergency and for adult weight at 12 days, using theoretical (IT) and empirical (IP) index selection methods. Index coefficients were given empirically in the IP line and they were adjusted in the successive generations of selection according to the results obtained in the previous ones. Highly repeatable selection responses in all replicates occurred in both lines for the aggregate genotype (egg laying plus adult weight) and for each individual trait. The IP line tended to increase slightly more than the IT line for aggregate genotype and egg laying, while the highest response in adult weight was obtained with the IT method. The two methods gave consistently different responses in each replicate. The expected results were that IT selection should not exceed IP selection for the aggregate genotype and egg laying while theoretically the IT method should have been superior for increase adult weight. Theoretical expectations for adult weight have been fulfilled in practice. The IP method would be preferred in a practical sense because of its simplicity and freedom from need of parameter estimation.  相似文献

Artificial selection was carried out for over 45 generations to enhance and suppress expression of the mutation hairy on the Drosophila melanogaster wing. Whole chromosome mapping of X‐linked and autosomal modifiers of sense organ number displayed regional differences in magnitude and direction of their effects. Regional specificity of modifier effects was also seen in some interchromosomal interactions. Scanning electron microscopy allowed precise measurement of sense organ size and position along the L3 longitudinal wing vein. Sense organ size varied in a predictable fashion along the proximal–distal axis, and the dorsal pattern differed from the ventral pattern. The high and low selection lines differed most in the proximal portion of the L3 vein. Extra sense organs in the High line were often associated with vein fragments at locations predicted from ancestral vein patterns. Thus, regional specificity of polygenic or quantitative trait locus modifier effects was identified in several different parts of the wing. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
