Pre-eclampsia is the most common medical complication of pregnancy associated with increased maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Its exact etiology is not known, although several evidences indicate that various elements might play an important role in pre-eclampsia. This study was carried out to analyze and to compare the concentration of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in the serum of women with pre-eclampsia and in normal pregnant women. Fifty clinically diagnosed patients with pre-eclampsia (25 with mild and 25 with severe pre-eclampsia) and 50 normal pregnant controls were enrolled in this study. The serum calcium, magnesium, and zinc levels were estimated with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The mean serum levels of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in normal pregnant group were 2.45 ± 0.18 mmol/L, 0.79 ± 0.13 mmol/L, and 15.64 ± 2.4 μmol/L, respectively, while in mild pre-eclamptic group, these were 2.12 ± 0.15 mmol/L, 0.67 ± 0.14 mmol/L, and 12.72 ± 1.7 μmol/L, respectively. Serum levels in severe pre-eclamptic group were 1.94 ± 0.09 mmol/L, 0.62 ± 0.11 mmol/L, and 12.04 ± 1.4 μmol/L, respectively. These results indicate that reduction in serum levels of calcium, magnesium, and zinc during pregnancy might be possible contributors in etiology of pre-eclampsia, and supplementation of these elements to diet may be of value to prevent pre-eclampsia.  相似文献

Measurement and monitoring of magnesium (Mg) are important to prevent the development of serious and potentially fatal complications in critically ill patients. Although ion-selective electrodes are available and earlier reports suggest that free ionized magnesium (iMg2+) is the most useful test to estimate Mg status, most clinical laboratories still only measure total Mg. To compare the relationship among iMg2+, total Mg, and albumin in serum, samples were collected from 48 consecutive patients admitted to an intensive care unit or a primary health center. The mean serum level of iMg2+ in 44 patients was 0.53 mmol/L, the total Mg was 0.06 mmol/L, and the albumin was 34.93 g/L. The correlation between iMg2+ and total Mg in serum was r=0.585; the correlation between iMg2+ and albumin in serum was r=378; and the correlation between total Mg and albumin in serum was r=0.340. The mean percent iMg2+ in relation to total Mg in serum was calculated to be 55% in the patient samples. The important level of biologically active iMg2+ was not reflected upon analysis of total Mg in 25% of consecutive patients. This report shows that the correlation of iMg2+ and total Mg is weak, not only in critically ill patients but also in patients in whom Mg status is inquired as a whole.  相似文献

There are conflicting reports as to the association between serum level of magnesium (Mg) and postmenopausal osteoporosis (OP). The purpose of the present study is to clarify the association between serum level of Mg and postmenopausal OP using a meta-analysis approach. We searched articles indexed in Pubmed and the Chinese Journal Full-text Database (CJFD) published as of October 2013 that met our predefined criteria. Seven eligible studies involving 1,349 postmenopausal women from 12 case-control study arms were identified. Overall, pooled analysis indicated that postmenopausal osteoporotic women had a lower serum level of Mg than the healthy controls (standardized mean difference [SMD]?=??0.55, 95 % confidence interval [CI]?=??0.83 to ?0.26). Further subgroup analysis found a similar pattern in Turkey (SMD?=??0.66, 95 % CI?=??0.99 to ?0.32) and Belgium (SMD?=??0.98, 95 % CI?=??1.91 to ?0.05), but not in China (SMD?=?0.02, 95 % CI?=??0.21 to 0.26). And the difference of serum level of Mg between postmenopausal osteoporotic women and healthy controls below the age of 60 years (SMD?=??0.61, 95 % CI?=??1.09 to ?0.13) was similar to that among the population over 60 years (SMD?=??0.49, 95 % CI?=??0.80 to ?0.18).In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests that the low serum level of Mg seems to be a risk factor for OP among the postmenopausal women. However, the subgroup analysis found that there was contradiction regarding races and geography, like China and Turkey. Thus, this finding needs further confirmation by trans-regional multicenter study to obtain better understanding of causal relationships between serum Mg and postmenopausal OP.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels in 31 healthy pregnant women and 51 healthy, nonpregnant controls living in the Mediterranean area of Granada, Spain, was performed. The subjects were divided into two groups: Group A, consisted of pregnant women in three categories according to the trimester of pregnancy, and Group B consisted of nonpregnant women acting as controls. In pregnant women, serum Zn levels were found from 0.300-1.340 mg/L and serum Cu from 0.936-2.304 mg/L, whereas in the nonpregnant women group, the mean serum levels were 0.947 ±0.265 mg/L for Zn and 1.092 ±0.365 mg/L for Cu. Serum Zn progressively decreased with gestation. Mean Zn levels were 0.829 ±0.253, 0.846 ±0.329, and 0.620 ±0.142 mg/L, corresponding to the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy, respectively. Serum Zn concentrations were significantly lower in pregnant women as compared to controls: 0.712 ±0.236 mg/L vs 0.947 ±0.265 mg/L, respectively (p < 0.05). In contrast, Cu levels increased with period of gestation from 1.053 ±0.498 mg/L in the first trimester to 1.616 ±0.304 mg/L in the second and 1.689 ±0.344 mg/L in the third. Serum Cu levels in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those determined during the first trimester and for nonpregnant controls. Both Zn and Cu during pregnancy did not appear to be dependent on the subject’s age (p > 0.05).  相似文献

This study aims at determining possible association between serum magnesium (Mg) concentrations and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in elderly subjects. Subjects were 137 men and women aged 60 to 90 years, selected from among participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study after excluding those taking medications for hypertension and dyslipidemia. Serum Mg levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and MetS was defined according to ATP III criteria. The overall prevalence of MetS was 43.8%. Among MetS components, only plasma glucose showed a negative correlation with serum Mg concentrations (r = −0.194, p = 0.024). Subjects with MetS had significantly lower serum Mg concentrations compared with non-MetS ones (2.09 ± 0.03 vs. 2.18 ± 0.03 mg/dL, p = 0.033) even after adjustments with MetS components except for hyperglycemia (2.04 ± 0.06 vs. 2.20 ± 0.05 mg/dL, p = 0.011). However, after adjustment for hyperglycemia per se or along with the other MetS components, the significant difference between serum Mg levels in subjects with and without MetS disappeared. In conclusion, serum Mg level is diminished in elderly subjects with MetS, and hyperglycemia may play dominant role in this decrease; however, the results do not clarify whether the low serum Mg level is a consequence of hyperglycemia or is a risk factor contributing to its development.  相似文献

An “anti-oxidant cocktail” consisting of betacarotene, vitamins B6, C, E, zinc, and selenium or corresponding placebos were given for one y as daily dietary supplements to 45 elderly residents of a nursing home. Initially, the serum TBA reactant levels were higher (2.7±0.7 μmol/L) than those of an ad hoc control group of healthy younger adults (2.3±0.6 μmol/L),p<0.01. After three mo supplementation, the levels among the verum elderly had decreased to 2.2±0.6 μmol/L, and they remained at this lower level until the end of the study period, whereas the placebo group showed no change. A significant inverse correlation (r=−0.428,p<0.01) existed between the concentrations of serum TBA reactants and whole blood selenium (B-Se), but only B-Se levels above 200 μg/L were associated with a decrease in serum lipid peroxides. Serum alpha-tocopherol concentration also correlated inversely with serum TBA reactants but this correlation (r=−0.273,p<0.76) was not as strong as that of B-Se. Deficient vitamin B6 status, in biochemical terms, was observed in 25% of the elderly; a daily supplement of 2 mg B6 fully cured all cases of deficiency. The verum group improved slightly in several psychological tests, whereas subjects on placebo remained unchanged or deteriorated during the follow-up period. Clinical amelioration among the verum subjects was reported by the nurses; no toxic side effects were reported. In conclusion, the elderly benefited biochemically and clinically of dietary antioxidant supplements.  相似文献

Gestational diabetes is one of the most common diseases in pregnancy. In the present work, the possible relationship between serum selenium concentration and gestational diabetes was investigated. Blood samples of 234 pregnant women were collected, including 98 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), 46 subjects with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and 90 normal pregnant women (NPW). An additional 17 samples of normal women of fertile age (NW) were collected for comparison. The hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry was used for selenium determination. The mean serum selenium levels obtained for each group were 0.0741±0.0167 mg/L for NPW, 0.0631±0.0132 mg/L for IGT, 0.0635±0.0120 mg/L for GDM, and 0.108±0.0170 mg/L for NW. Serum selenium levels were significantly lower in pregnant woman with IGT (p<0.001) and GDM (p<0.001) than in NPW. Furthermore, an inverse correlation between the serum selenium concentration and the gestational period was also observed. Selenium supplementation during gestation for pregnant women, especially with IGT and GDM, should be considered.  相似文献

Melatonin is the main product of the pineal gland, and trace metals play a critical role in growth and development. The purpose of this study was to assess the serum zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) levels in pinealec-tomized chicks and their possible interactions with the development of spinal deformity. Chicks were divided into two equal groups: unoperated controls (group M) and pinealectomized chicks (group N). Pinealectomies were performed at the age of 3 d. After 8 wk, serum Zn and Mg levels of 10 animals from each group were measured by spectrophotometric assay. The results of analyses were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. The correlation between serum Zn and Mg levels were assessed by Spearman's correlation. In this study, it was obvious that the serum Zn levels in group N were significantly lower than those in group M (2.8±0.10 vs 4.2±0.14 ppm; p<0.0005). In contrast, Mg levels in group N was high compared with the values in group M, although there was no significant difference (17.8±0.69 vs 15.7±0.85 ppm; p>0.05). In pinealectomized animals, serum Zn levels declined significantly while serum Mg levels increased, albeit insignificantly. Thus, there was a moderately positive but not statistically significant correlation between Mg and Zn levels in unoperated controls (r=0.273, p>0.05), whereas there was a negative but not statistically significant correlation between Zn and Mg levels in pinealectomized chicks (r=−0.115, p>0.05). In addition, the serum Mg to serum Zn ratio was significantly higher in group N than in the group M control (6.39±0.32 vs 3.75±0.22, respectively; p<0.001). From the results of the current study, it is clear that surgical pinealectomy in newly hatched Hybro Broiler chicks has a significant effect on serum Zn level. However, the serum Mg did not change significantly. Because serum Mg is not a good indicator of Mg status in chicks, it is speculated that other tissues, such as muscle or spine, might productively be explored as a more sensitive Mg biomarker for this model. The present study provides experimental evidence that serum trace metal levels might be affected in pinealectomized animals because of the lack of its main neurohormone melatonin.  相似文献

Determination of whether magnesium (Mg) is a nutrient of public health concern has been hindered by questionable Dietary Recommended Intakes (DRIs) and problematic status indicators that make Mg deficiency assessment formidable. Balance data obtained since 1997 indicate that the EAR and RDA for 70-kg healthy individuals are about 175 and 250 mg/day, respectively, and these DRIs decrease or increase based on body weight. These DRIs are less than those established for the USA and Canada. Urinary excretion data from tightly controlled metabolic unit balance studies indicate that urinary Mg excretion is 40 to 80 mg (1.65 to 3.29 mmol)/day when Mg intakes are <250 mg (10.28 mmol)/day, and 80 to 160 mg (3.29 to 6.58 mmol)/day when intakes are >250 mg (10.28 mmol)/day. However, changing from low to high urinary excretion with an increase in dietary intake occurs within a few days and vice versa. Thus, urinary Mg as a stand-alone status indicator would be most useful for population studies and not useful for individual status assessment. Tightly controlled metabolic unit depletion/repletion experiments indicate that serum Mg concentrations decrease only after a prolonged depletion if an individual has good Mg reserves. These experiments also found that, although individuals had serum Mg concentrations approaching 0.85 mmol/L (2.06 mg/dL), they had physiological changes that respond to Mg supplementation. Thus, metabolic unit findings suggest that individuals with serum Mg concentrations >0.75 mmol/L (1.82 mg/L), or as high as 0.85 mmol/L (2.06 mg/dL), could have a deficit in Mg such that they respond to Mg supplementation, especially if they have a dietary intake history showing <250 mg (10.28 mmol)/day and a urinary excretion of <80 mg (3.29 mmol)/day.  相似文献

Brucellosis is regarded as one of the most common diseases among humans and livestock. In the present study, we aimed to assess the effect of this disease on the level of various cations including copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and magnesium (Mg) as well as oxidative stress status in the serum of people suffering from brucellosis. The present case-study was carried out on 40 patients with brucellosis (case) and 20 healthy people (control). Blood specimens were taken from all the people and the level of essential trace elements and oxidative stress status were measured. The serum level of copper in the case group (165.39 ± 43.19 μg/dl) was significantly higher compared with that in the control group (122.12 ± 28.88 μg/dl). Whereas the serum level of zinc was significantly lower in the case group compared with that in the control group (76.47 ± 28.88 vs. 92.85 ± 23.16 μg/dl). The manganese and magnesium serum levels did not differ significantly between the two groups. Furthermore, total antioxidant capacity level was significantly lower in the case group (122.12 ± 28.22 μmol/ml) than that in the control group (3.08 ± 0.12 μmol/ml) and the level of serum malondialdehyde was significantly higher in the case group (7.20 ± 0.23 mmol/ml) than that in the control group (4.0 ± 0.19 mmol/ml). Brucellosis can cause alteration in the serum level of essential trace elements. Moreover, the present study indicated that brucellosis produces oxidative stress in patients.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo investigate the association between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and risk of osteopenia in middle-aged and elderly Chinese with ALT within the normal range.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study. A total of 4,890 men and women (pre- and postmenopausal) aged 40 years or older were randomly recruited from Fujian, China. Each participant was required to complete a questionnaire and then undergo anthropometric, biochemical, and bone mineral density measurements.ResultsThe odds ratio of osteopenia decreased significantly with increasing ALT level at baseline. The three groups (men, pre- and postmenopausal women) were divided by ALT quartiles. In multiple logistic regression models using the first quartile as the reference, after adjusting for corresponding confounding factors, the odds ratios of osteopenia across the other ALT quartiles were 0.576 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.390 to 0.851), 0.654 (95% CI, 0.460 to 0.930), and 0.629 (95% CI, 0.427 to 0.926) for premenopausal women, and 0.949 (95% CI, 0.699 to 1.289), 0.733 (95% CI, 0.540 to 0.995), and 0.692 (95% CI, 0.508 to 0.943) for postmenopausal women (not significant for quartile 2). However, no significantly different results were found in men. Multiple linear regression models showed that serum ALT concentrations were positively associated with the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance.ConclusionOur study of middle-aged and elderly Chinese men and women demonstrates that the prevalence of osteopenia is inversely associated with ALT level when ALT is within the normal range. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Toxoplasma gondii infection on the total content of the essential elements Zn and Mg levels. Plasma zinc and magnesium concentrations were measured in 158 patients whose anti-T gondii IgG antibodies were positive. Scores were obtained for the patients and their age- and sex-matched 82 sero-negative healthy controls. The mean concentration of Mg in blood was significantly lower in sero-positive patients than in their controls both in females (p<0.01) and males (p<0.01). The average Zn concentration in seropositive female patients was 0.72±0.2 mg/L and 0.65±0.1 mg/L in controls (p>0.05). The mean values of the Zn in blood were 1.00±0.3 mg/L in seropositive male patients and 0.84±0.2 in controls (p>0.05). No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of Zn and Mg in both sero-positive females/males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood Zn and Mg levels in seropositive female/male patients and controls (p>0.05). Mg levels were found to be clearly decreased in the patients with chronic toxoplasmosis, whereas no change was observed in Zn levels.  相似文献

The serum zinc (Zn) concentrations of 80 healthy subjects (48 male, 32 female) from southeastern Spain were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The samples were digested by heating in a 4:1 mixture of nitric and perchloric acids. The concentration of Zn was determined against a Contox Trace Metal Serum Control Panel A standard reference. Zn concentrations in the standard were found to be 2.332 ±0.489 mg/L, with a mean recovery of 102.7%. In the serum samples, the relative standard deviation was <6% for the range of concentrations determined: 0.420-1.540 mg/L for women (mean value 0.947 ±0.265 mg/L) and 0.490-1.480 mg/L for men (mean value 0.951 ±0.243 mg/L). In healthy subjects, no statistically significant differences were observed in the Zn levels with respect to their sex (p > 0.05) or the location where they lived (mountainous vs coastal zones). It is concluded that the dietary Zn intake and Zn status for healthy adults in this region of Spain are within normal values.  相似文献

This study was performed to investigate calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and chlorine (Cl) levels in blood serum at d 60, 100, and 150 of gestation and at d 45 after parturition and to find out the significance of differences for macromineral levels during these stages of single or twin gestation in Akkaraman sheep. Blood samples of 30 apparently healthy pregnant Akkaraman sheep (15 single pregnancies, 15 twin pregnancies) were used. The samples were analyzed using a biochemical analyzer for Ca, P, Na, K, and Mg concentrations and using the Schales method for Cl levels. A statistically significant decrease (p<0.001 and p<0.05) was found on d 100 of pregnancy for Ca levels and for serum inorganic P levels in both groups. Twin pregnant sheep were found to have lower (p<0.05) serum Ca and inorganic P levels than sheep pregnant with one fetus on d 100 and 150. Significant decreases (p>0.05, p <0.01) for serum Mg levels in both groups were recorded on d 100 and 150 of pregnancy. There were significant increases (p<0.01) in serum Cl levels on d 100 in single and twin pregnant sheep.  相似文献

Numerous observations suggest a possible connection between the levels of Mg, Zn, Fe, and Zn and the incidence of depressive symptoms. Depression is two to three times more common in women than in men. The menopausal period is extremely conducive to depressive disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the severity of depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women depending on the levels of Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Fe. The study included 198 healthy postmenopausal women at the average age of 56.26 ± 5.55 years. In the first part of the study, standardized research tools were used, namely the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The second part involved biochemical analysis of Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Fe levels in blood serum. The lowest Cu levels were observed in women without depressive symptoms (1.07 ± 0.22 mg/l) and the highest in those with severe depressive symptoms (1.19 ± 0.17 mg/l), (p ≤ 0.05). The lowest Mg levels were observed in women with depressive symptoms (14.28 ± 2.13 mg/l), and the highest in women without depressive symptoms (16.30 ± 3.51 mg/l), (p ≤ 0.05). The average serum Mg levels (15.75 ± 3.23 mg/l) decreased compared to the reference values (18.77–24 mg/l). What is striking is a potential relation between the levels of Mg and Cu and depressiveness. Our results indicate to a higher vulnerability to depression in a group of women with lower levels of Mg and higher levels of Cu.  相似文献

Although there are many studies on effect of fluoride on trace elements in experimental animals, few studies exist on serum trace elements levels in patients with endemic fluorosis. We aimed to determine the serum levels of trace elements including serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and serum levels of minerals including calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium (K) in patients with endemic fluorosis. The study group consisted of 30 patients with endemic fluorosis (17 females, 13 males, mean age 33.53 ± 9.85 years). An age, gender, and body mass index matched 30 healthy volunteers comprised control group (21 females, ten males with a mean age 33.93 ± 7.39 years). Urine fluoride levels of chronic fluorosis patients were significantly higher than that of control subjects as expected (1.92 ± 0.10 mg/l vs. 0.41 ± 0.09 mg/l, respectively; P < 0.001). Serum Cu levels (89.14 ± 16.77 μg/dL vs. 102.69 ± 25.04 μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.017), serum Zn levels (77.98 ± 20.58 μg/dL vs. 94.57 ± 35.87μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.032), and serum Mg levels (1.92 ± 0.18 mg/dL vs. 2.07 ± 0.31 mg/dL, respectively, p = 0.022) was significantly lower in chronic fluorosis patients than in controls. There were no statistically significant differences between the fluorosis group and control group with respect to serum levels of Na, K, Ca, and P. We concluded that chronic fluorosis is associated with reduced serum levels of Cu, Zn, and Mg.  相似文献

Changes in osmolality and the concentration of cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg) were studied in blood serum of pregnant women from two weeks after conception, throughout the whole pregnancy, and within the first week after delivery. Altogether 239 women from 18 to 40 years of age were studied. Blood serum osmolality decreased from 287±0.8 to 278±1.6 mOsm/kg H2O from the fifth week of pregnancy and remained virtually at this level until the end of pregnancy. Hyponatremia was found during the three trimesters of pregnancy, in trimesters II and III hypokalemia was not observed, whereas hypocalcemia and hypomagnemia were found. On the first day after delivery, the blood serum osmolality and concentrations of magnesium ions returned to their levels in nonpregnant women, whereas concentrations of sodium and calcium ions remained decreased. No correlation was found between hypoosmia and changes in blood serum concentrations of ions under study during the three trimesters of pregnancy. Thus, in normal pregnancy, hypoosmia develops from the fifth week after conception and persists until delivery. The concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium ions are regulated by independent mechanisms to provide retention of these parameters within certain periods of pregnancy at the level of nonpregnant women on the background of hypoosmia.  相似文献

DHURANDHAR, NIKHIL V, PUSHPA R KULKARNI, SHARAD M AJINKYA, ABHAYA A SHERIKAR, RICHARD L ATKINSON. Association of adenovirus infection with human obesity. We previously reported that chickens infected with the avian adenovirus SMAM-1 developed a unique syndrome characterized by excessive intra-abdominal fat deposition accompanied by paradoxically low serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. There have been no previous reports of avian adenoviruses infecting humans. We screened the serum of 52 humans with obesity in Bombay, India, for antibodies against SMAM-1 virus using the agar gel precipitation test (AGPT) method. Bodyweights and serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were compared in SMAM-1-positive (P-AGPT) and SMAM-1-negative (N-AGPT) groups. Ten subjects were positive for antibodies to SMAM-1, and 42 subjects did not have antibodies. The P-AGPT group had a significantly higher bodyweight (p<0.02) and body mass index (p<0.001) (95.1 ± 2.1 kg and 35.3 ± 1.5 kg/m2, respectively) compared with the N-AGPT group (80.1 ± 0.6 kg and 30.7 ± 0.6 kg/m2, respectively). Also, the P-AGPT group had significantly lower serum cholesterol (p<0.02) and triglyceride (p<0.001) values (4.65 mmol/L and 1.45 mmol/L, respectively) compared with the N-AGPT group (5.51 mmol/L and 2.44 mmol/L, respectively). Two subjects positive for SMAM-1 antibodies had antibodies against each others' serum, suggesting the presence of antigens in one or both. When these two serum samples were inoculated into chicken embryos, macroscopic lesions compatible with SMAM-1 infection developed. The inoculation of serum from N-AGPT subjects did not produce such lesions. The presence of increased obesity, antibodies to SMAM-1, reduced levels of blood lipids, and viremia that produces a typical infection in chicken embryos suggests that SMAM-1, or a serologically similar human virus, may be involved in the cause of obesity in some humans.  相似文献
