Background

Low back and pelvic pain is one of the most frequently reported disorders in pregnancy, however etiology and pathology of this problem have not been fully determined. The relationship between back pain experienced during pregnancy and posture remains unclear. It is challenging to measure reliably postural and spinal changes at the time of pregnancy, since most imaging studies cannot be used due to the radiation burden. 3D shape measurement, or surface topography (ST), systems designed for posture evaluation could potentially fill this void. A pilot study was conducted to test the potential of monitoring the change of spine curvatures and posture during pregnancy using surface topography. A single case was studied to test the methodology and preliminarily assess the usefulness of the procedure before performing a randomized trial. The apparatus used in this study was metrologically tested and utilized earlier in scoliosis screening.

Case presentation

The subject was measured using a custom-made structured light illumination scanner with accuracy of 0.2 mm. Measurement was taken every 2 weeks, between 17th and 37th week of pregnancy, 11 measurements in total. From the measurement the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angles, and vertical balance angle were extracted automatically. Custom-written software was used for analysis. Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (ODI) was done with every measurement. The values were correctly extracted from the measurement. The results were: 50.9 ± 2.4° for kyphosis angle, 58.1 ± 2.1° for lordosis angle and 4.7 ± 1.7° for vertical balance angle. The registered change was 7.4° in kyphosis angle, 8.4° in lordosis angle and 5.5° in vertical balance angle. The calculated ODI values were between moderate disability and severe disability (22 to 58 %).

Conclusions

This case study presents that surface topography may be suitable for monitoring of spinal curvature and posture change in pregnant women. The ionizing radiation studies are contraindicated during pregnancy. Surface topography data connected with information from pain level questionnaires allows to investigate the connection between changes in posture and back pain.

The sulfate reduction rate was measured for almost four years in the profundal sediments of Lake Kizaki, a mesotrophic lake in central Japan. The rate was generally highest in the surface layer and decreased with depth. Seasonally, sulfate reduction tended to be high in spring and summer, and then to decrease until the end of stratification (December) in spite of a constant in situ temperature of around 6 °C, although fluctuations were found in every year. The rate also fluctuated greatly according to year. The maximum rate of sulfate reduction was 0.33 mmol m−2 d−1 in May, 1990, and the minimum was 0.004 mmol m−2 d−1 in March, 1993. These relatively low rates, compared with those reported for freshwater sediments, seem to be due to low concentrations of sulfate in the sediments (5–23 μmol l−1 in the surface layer). The rate was highly correlated with the concentration of sulfate in the sediments. The addition of sulfate stimulated sulfate reduction in all sediment samples tested, but adding lactate did not. Therefore, sulfate reduction should be limited mainly by the supply of sulfate. Measurements of sulfate reduction rates at different concentrations of added sulfate revealed a low concentration of half-saturation constant as low as 12 μmol l−1.  相似文献

  • 2.2. By differential centrifugation, crude extracts were separated into ten fractions. Activities of both enzymes were found mainly in cytosolic fractions marked by EDH (tomato) and glu-6-P-DH (E. gracilis).

In rural areas, riparian forest remnants can be very important for the maintenance and improvement of stream water quality. We evaluated if a forest remnant influenced stream water quality, and if these results were influenced by forest structure. We sampled reaches from 140 m upstream of the remnant edge until 600 m within the forest remnant. Electric conductivity (EC) and ammonium concentrations decreased as the stream flowed through the remnant, whereas dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus (P), total dissolved P, organic P, and silicate concentrations increased along the remnant. Variation in forest structure was due to a gradient in forest stratification versus tree height and diameter at breast height, and a gradient in tree density versus basal area. More stratified parts of the forest, with smaller trees, resulted in lower EC values and concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrite, whereas higher density of trees resulted in lower levels of total and dissolved P, creating heterogeneity at very local scales. The overall mean influence of this riparian forest remnant improved stream water quality, suggesting that forest remnants have local effects that can be important when managing stream water quality at larger spatial scales.  相似文献

Highly stable selective adsorbents for δ-aminolaevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) were prepared by attaching the substrate to agarose beads, either directly or through an extension arm. Columns containing these biospecific adsorbents can completely bind the enzyme present in extracts of Euglena gracilis Z strain. Elution is obtained by changing the ionic strength of the buffer. Due to their ease of preparation and high stability these adsorbents may be of general value for purification of ALA-D from different sources.  相似文献

We studied the changes of exergy and specific exergy with data of benthic macrofauna communities, periodically sampled along an estuarine gradient of eutrophication in the Mondego estuary (Western Portugal). Exergy estimates were calculated from organism biomass, based on weighing factors for the relative content of exergy per unit of biomass determined from DNA contents of organisms. Results were discussed in terms of both the macrofauna biomass production and the structural organisation of the system. Estimates for the exergy indices provided useful indications for the evaluation of environmental impact due to the eutrophication process. Different average values for the indices of exergy and specific exergy were estimated relatively to areas with different levels of eutrophication, in the spatial gradient of eutrophication. Higher exergy levels and lower exergy content per unit of biomass (specific exergy) were associated to populations more stabilized or areas less perturbed. Additionally, the index of specific exergy seemed capable of providing indications for the qualitative alterations in the communities (in temporal and spatial terms) that go in the direction of the observations made in this ecosystem.  相似文献

Purpose

The main goal of this work is to evaluate the environmental impact of a 63-m blade for wind generators. The embodied energy and the carbon footprint are used as supporting tools for material selection in the initial project stages.

Methods

Real industrial data regarding the most used materials for wind turbine blade construction are used. Two eco-parameters, embodied energy and carbon footprint, were calculated from each selected material together with values of manufacture, transport, use, and final disposal. The blades must be built to have a mechanical strength high enough to withstand vibrations caused by manufacturing flaws, turbulence, or irregular loading. In this sense, Young’s modulus, yield strength, and density were compared to the environmental footprint data to support the final material choice. This evaluation process of the possible materials to be used in the blade manufacture was carried out in the initial stages of the project.

Results

Composite materials such as glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), bonded together with an adhesive material, are used to build modern wind turbine blades. Those composites comprise a considerable number of different materials that can be mixed to reach adequate performance. Comparisons were made with 46 pre-selected materials, considering the mechanical behavior and environmental impacts. The final selected materials have better properties than the reference material. Finally, two materials with the desired mechanical properties and with a potential lower negative environmental impact than the reference material were selected.

Conclusions

Replacing the reference resin—epoxy/E-glass fiber—with the epoxy resin with the lowest environmental impact—epoxy/S-glass fiber—will reduce the total value of the environmental load to 102 GJ of energy and 3.4 t of CO2. As important as the material selection in the early stages of product development is the end of life (EoL) choice. In this case, the glass fiber has an EoL potential of 370 GJ of energy and 460 t of CO2 in the remanufacturing option, against zero for the landfill. This work shows that carefully selected raw materials and EoL alternatives for WTB can significantly reduce the environmental impact of this component.

From a comparison of the photoresponses and membrane properties of photoreceptors from 20 species of Diptera, we conclude that coding in the time domain is matched to the dictates of visual ecology. This matching involves the dynamics of phototransduction and the use of an appropriate mix of potassium conductances to tune the photoreceptor membrane.
  2. Rapidly flying, manoeuvrable diurnal Diptera from several families have fast photoreceptors, with corner frequencies (the frequency at which signal power falls by a half) of between 50 and 107 Hz. The ponderous and predominantly nocturnal tipulids have slow photoreceptors with fully light adapted corner frequencies of 16 to 19 Hz.
  3. Dark adapted fast photoreceptors have a lower gain (as indicated by lower noise levels), a lower sensitivity, and light adapt more rapidly than dark adapted slow photoreceptors. Fast cells also have much lower input resistances and shorter time constants.
  4. Fast photoreceptors rectify more strongly in the steady state because of a weakly inactivating delayed rectifier potassium conductance with fast and slow components of activation. Slow photoreceptors rectify less strongly in the steady state because their membrane properties are dominated by strongly inactivating outward currents with reversal potentials in the range — 80 to -90 mV.
  5. The differences between potassium conductances match the differing functional requirements of fast and slow photoreceptors. The non-inactivating delayed rectifier promotes the rapid response of fast cells by reducing the membrane time constant. This is an expensive strategy, involving large conductances and currents. Slowly flying nocturnal insects do not require a high speed of response. The potassium conductances in their slow photoreceptors inactivate to avoid costly and unnecessary ion fluxes.
  6. Both the dynamics of the photoresponse and photoreceptor membrane properties exhibit sexual dimorphism. Light adapted photoreceptors in the enlarged male dorsal eye of Bibio markii have a corner frequency of 42 Hz, compared with 27 Hz for cells in the smaller female eye. This difference in frequency response correlates with the male's higher spatial acuity and is accompanied by consistent differences in potassium conductance activation rate. We conclude that the divison between fast and slow cells is the product of cellular constraints, metabolic costs and the requirements of coding efficiency at different light levels and retinal image velocities.

This study investigated the consequences of passive ecological restoration on a riparian habitat and on water quality. The restoration plan consists of excluding livestock by constructing fences along an entire stream 1 m from the stream bed, with the assumption that recovering riparian habitat will restore their ecological processes (e.g., filtration, soil stabilization). We measured responses of riparian plant communities and physico-chemical water quality. We presented data from an 8-year before-after control-impact design across a reference stream and a restored stream in a rural landscape in Normandy, France. Restoration appeared to modify plant communities. After 8 years of restoration, the restored stream had a complex riparian bank, similar to that of the reference stream, with an increase in the number of trees, a decrease in bare soil, and an increase in habitat heterogeneity. Despite this modification, water quality did not improve. The same low water quality in the reference stream demonstrated the need for a watershed-scale approach and for actions to improve agricultural practices before implementing restoration practices at a smaller scale. Nonetheless, the lack of improved water quality does not necessarily mean that the restoration failed. Other functions and services can be provided by excluding livestock.  相似文献

Hydrophilicity index is used to locate antigenic determinants on two related groups of proteins-myoglobin and hemoglobin. The data on 41 species (including 34 mammals) of myoglobin show that average hydrophilicity for the complete myoglobin molecules as well as the average hydrophilicity for all hydrophilic regions put together seem to remain constant; the variation in the size and location of the antigenic determinants in these species is very small indicating that the antigenic sites are not shifted during evolution. In the case of both the proteins there is a good agreement between the antigenic sites picked up by using hydrophilicity index and the experimentally determined antigenic sites. The data on 56 species of hemoglobin α-chains and 44 species of hemoglobinβ-chains showed that although there are few sites on hemoglobin which have remained invariant during evolution, there is a significant variation in other sites in terms of either a splitting of a site, or a drastic change in the hydrophilicity values and/or a length of the site. Comparison of the hydrophilicity data on these two groups of proteins suggests that hemoglobins which perform a variety of functions as compared to myoglobins are evolving faster than myoglobins supporting the contention of earlier workers.  相似文献

Euglena gracilis was cultured with different concentrations of an essential metal and a non essential one: Cu and Cd. Cu even at high concentrations did not affect the growth rate, while Cd reduced it according to the concentration used. Cu concentration stayed always lower in the cells than in the medium, instead Cd was accumulated in the cells.From cells and medium of cultures treated with copper a glycopeptide which chelated copper and zinc was isolated. It was present in the control culture too, but it linked only Zn; its molecular weight is lower than 10,000 D.From cells cultured with Cd a compound of a very high molecular weight (higher than 100,000 D) was isolated: it linked Cd and Zn.The concentration of Zn in the medium and in the cells linked to the compounds is also discussed, and a model is proposed for regulation of physiological metals in organisms; it may explain how detoxification relates to regulation of heavy metals.  相似文献

Rapid destruction of forest habitats has led to the establishment of protected areas in formerly managed forests with the aim of restoring biodiversity. Conservation in spruce-dominated reserves is often contradicted by salvage logging after insect outbreaks. Here we study the community characteristics of wood decaying fungi in a high montane Norway Spruce forest with three different management types: (1) a formerly managed area disturbed by a large-scale bark beetle outbreak, (2) an area with continuous salvage logging, and (3) an old-growth forest. Bark beetle activity in the disturbed area resulted in downed wood amounts comparable to those of the old-growth forest. However, species accumulation curves for the disturbed forest were more similar to those of the logged forest than to those of the old-growth forest. This arose because of differences in the diversity of wood decay classes; wood decay in the disturbed forest was more homogeneous. Logs in the disturbed forest originated almost exclusively from bark-beetle-infested trees, but the causes of tree mortality in the old-growth forest were manifold. Although most red-listed species were clearly confined to old-growth forest, Antrodiella citrinella was most abundant in the disturbed forest. Our analysis furthermore showed that the between stand scale is the most effective unit for diversity wood-decaying fungi. We therefore suggest a conservation strategy for preserving old-growth forests and establishing protected forest stands to enhance structural heterogeneity in spruce-dominated forests. For this, a careful screening of protected areas throughout Europe is necessary to provide managers with guidelines for conservation.  相似文献

To understand how morphological characters change during evolution, we need insight into the evolution of developmental processes. Comparative developmental approaches that make use of our fundamental understanding of development in certain model organisms have been initiated for different animal systems and flowering plants. Nematodes provide a useful experimental system with which to investigate the genetic and molecular alterations underlying evolutionary changes of cell fate specification in development, by comparing different species to the genetic model system Caenorhabditis elegans. In this review, I will first discuss the different types of evolutionary alterations seen at the cellular level by focusing mainly on the analysis of vulva development in different species. The observed alterations involve changes in cell lineage, cell migration and cell death, as well as induction and cell competence. I then describe a genetic approach in the nematode Pristionchus pacificus that might identify those genetic and molecular processes that cause evolutionary changes of cell fate specification.  相似文献

Ischemic stroke is a common neurological disease and causes severe disability and death worldwide. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) plays a crucial role in the maintenance of extracellular matrix stability and may participate in vascular remodeling in the development of ischemic stroke. The objective of this study is to identify polymorphisms in LOX genes and investigate the association between LOX polymorphisms and the susceptibility to ischemic stroke in the Chinese population. Genomic DNA sequencing analysis was performed on all 7 exons and all exon/intron splice sites of lysyl oxidase and 850?bp upstream, including the predicted promoter region in 25 control subjects. The identified polymorphisms were then detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in 702 ischemic stroke cases and 733 age-matched controls. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Two polymorphisms in the LOX gene, 473G/A (rs1800449) and rs2278226, were observed in the Chinese population. Frequencies of LOX 473AA genotype and A allele were significantly higher in ischemic stroke patients than in controls (odds ration (OR)?=?1.76, 95?% confidence interval (CI) 1.16-2.67, P?=?0.007; and OR?=?1.33, 95?% CI 1.10-1.60, P?=?0.003). Also, the prevalence of AC haplotype was significantly increased in ischemic stroke cases (OR?=?1.32, 95?% CI 1.10-1.60, P?=?0.004). Our data suggest that the G473A polymorphism of LOX gene could be a new risk factor for ischemic stroke.  相似文献

Several medusa species have been described from inland waters in Australia, Eurasia, Africa and America. The chief objective of this study is to summarize all species described from freshwater and from saline lakes, because the knowledge about this group is sparse and scattered in the literature. I summarize all accessible literature to deduct how many species of freshwater medusae exist and to show their distribution, relation and their phylogenetic origin.All medusae described from freshwater except Halmomises are Olindiidae (Limnomedusae). More than 20 Olindiidae species (in 6 genera) have been recorded from freshwater. However, about half of them may not be valid species or have been described insufficiently or improperly. Within the genera Craspedacusta only 3 (or 5) species are certain (C. sowerbii, C. iseanum, C. sinensis (and maybe C. sichuanensis and C. ziguiensis)). The genera Limnocnida may consist of 6 species, three from Africa (L. tanganjicae, L. victoriae, L. congoensis) and 3 from India (L. indica, L. biharensis, L. nepalensis). The status of Astrohydra (from Japan), Mansariella and Keralika (both from India) is uncertain. Additionally, the present study suggests that Craspedacusta and at least one type of Calpasoma hydrants are identical and Astrohydra may be closely related to Craspedacusta and/or Calpasoma.A comparison of the freshwater medusae with species described from saline lakes and brackish sites (Australomedusae from Australia and Moerisia from Egypt, Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Ganges Estuary) shows that these two groups are not closely related.  相似文献

To ascertain whether browsing or hydrologic conditions influence the physiological performance of Salix and whether Salix and graminoids (Carex) use and possibly compete for similar water resources, we quantified the in situ seasonal patterns of plant water and carbon relations over three growing seasons. Our studies were designed to address the physiological factors which may be responsible for poor woody plant regeneration in montane riparian habitats of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colo. As these systems act to insure the delivery of fresh water to downstream users, the maintenance of their integrity is critical. We quantified plant water potentials, instantaneous rates of carbon fixation, leaf carbon isotope discrimination (Δ), leaf nitrogen content and water sources using stable isotopes of water (δ18O). The carbon and water relations of Salix were significantly affected by winter browsing by elk and in some cases by landscape position with regard to proximity to active streams. Winter browsing of Salix by elk significantly increased summer plant water potentials and integrative measures of gas exchange (Δ), though browsing did not consistently affect instantaneous rates of photosynthesis, leaf nitrogen or the sources of water used by Salix. No effect of experimental manipulations of surface water conditions on Salix physiology was observed, likely due to the mesic nature of our study period. Using a two-member linear mixing model, from δ18O values we calculated that Salix appears to rely on streams for approximately 80% of its water. In contrast, the graminoid Carex derives almost 50% of its water from rainfall, indicating divergent water source use by these two life forms. Based on these findings, winter browsing by elk improved Salix water balance possibly by altering the shoot to root ratio which in turn leads to higher water potentials and higher degrees of season-long gas exchange, while experimental damming had in general no effect on the physiological performance of Salix plants. In addition, as the water sources of Salix and Carex were significantly different, competition for water may not influence the growth, development, and regeneration of Salix. Thus, under the conditions of our study, herbivory had a positive effect on the physiological performance of Salix, but it is still unclear whether these changes in physiology transcend into improved Salix regeneration and survivorship. However, under drier environmental conditions such as lower snowpacks and lower stream flows, the browsing resistance of Salix and ecosystem regeneration may be greatly hindered because the reliance of Salix on stream water makes it vulnerable to changes in surface water and hydrological conditions. In the present study, the water quality of the Anzali Wetland, located southwest of the Caspian Sea in Iran, was compared for the years 1985, 2007, and 2014, using a weighted arithmetic mean function (National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index: NSFWQIa), a weighted geometric mean function (NSFWQIm), and the Oregon Water Quality Index (OWQI). To that end, nine water quality parameters [pH, turbidity (TURB), temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate (NO3), total solids (TS), phosphate (PO4), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), and fecal coliforms (FC)] were analyzed at eight selected stations. According to the proposed classification for water quality indices (higher value (0–100), better water quality), the Wetland water quality was classified as the mean values of the three indices for the three sampled years, as follows: NSFWQIa (13.72, 12.81, 12.07); NSFWQIm (63.049, 52.388, 49.108); and OWQI (26.867, 14.477, 15.53). The values of NSFWQIa, NSFWQIm, and OWQI for the western stations were better than for the other stations in the region over the 29-year span of investigation; however, the remainders of the stations’ values were very poor. Because wastewaters discharged from industrial and agricultural areas are more concentrated in the eastern part of the Anzali Wetland, the eastern stations of the Wetland showed lower water quality compared to the central and western stations. The water of the Anzali Wetland has different quality classes according to the aggregation methods employed. It is concluded that when evaluating water quality of aquatic ecosystems, several indices should be used to obtain more comprehensive results.  相似文献

After soil surface disturbances biological soil crusts (BSC) cover rapidly the topmost soil millimeters. Depending on BSC age, development of soil water repellency, water infiltration and soil surface stability are influenced by this thin surface sealing. Within this study disturbed, early- mid- and late successional stages of BSC development were examined along a recovery transect. The results show an increase in water repellency and a decrease in water sorptivity and conductivity with ongoing BSC succession. Penetration resistance data shows very stable thin surface protection by cyanobacteria in early successional BSC that is non-repellent. Later successional stages show increased water repellency and lower water conductivity. We conclude that BSC development induces changes in surface structure and wettability. The soil surface wettability is strongly linked to the BSC community composition.  相似文献
