We investigated the depositional trends of total particles, carbon and nitrogen in a newly created, 600-km2 hydroelectric reservoir in Northern Québec, and compared the results with those observed in lakes of the surrounding region. We show that particulate fluxes exhibit a large degree of spatial heterogeneity in both the reservoir (68–548 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 5–33 mg PN m?2 d?1) and the natural lakes (30–150 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 3–12 mg PN m?2 d?1) and that on average, settling fluxes of the reservoir (211 ± 46 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 14 ± 3 mg PN m?2 d?1) exceeded lake deposition (79 ± 13 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 7 ± 1 mg PN m?2 d?1) by approximately two-fold. Our results also show that the nature of the organic matter reaching the sediments was significantly different between lakes and the reservoir, which can have consequences for benthic metabolism and the long-term storage. We found that sinking fluxes in the reservoir were mostly regulated by local morphological and hydrological conditions, with higher fluxes along or in the vicinity of the old riverbed (average 400 ± 73 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 24 ± 5 mg PN m?2 d?1) and lower fluxes in calmer zones such as side bays (average 106 ± 10 mg POC m?2 d?1 and 8 ± 1 mg PN m?2 d?1). In lakes, where settling fluxes were not linked to the trophy, or dissolved organic carbon, the actual nature of the sedimenting organic material was influenced by lake morphometry and the relative contribution of algal versus terrestrial sources. We conclude that re-suspension and erosion play a major role in shaping the reservoir sinking fluxes which explain both, the higher reservoir deposition and also some of the qualitative differences between the two systems. Despite all these differences, sinking particulate organic carbon fluxes were small and surprisingly similar relative to the surface carbon dioxide emissions in both the reservoir and lakes, representing approximately 16–17 % of the carbon efflux estimated for these same systems in 2008.  相似文献

The effects of organic enrichment on sediment biogeochemistry was studied in diffusion controlled sediment mesocosms, where labile organic matter (OM) (fish feed) pulses were added once a week to the sediment surface. Two types of sediments, differing mainly in content of reactive Fe, were used. The aim of this experiment was two-fold, (1) to evaluate the importance of Fe-driven sulfide buffering for sulfide accumulation in surface enriched sediments, and (2) to estimate the diagenetic capacity for degradation of labile OM near the sediment surface. The simulated OM loading rate of 375 mmol C m?2 day?1 led to a 5–6 times increase in CO2-production and a 4–5 times increase in O2-uptake. Sulfate reduction estimated by radiotracer experiments and CO2-release was 105–131 mmol m?2 day?1, but accumulation of porewater sulfide was low in both sediment types. Instead 99% of sulfide was oxidized with O2 at the sediment water interface in the low Fe treatment, whereas 46% of produced sulfide precipitated as Fe-S compound in the high Fe treatment resulting in significantly lower O2-uptake. Furthermore, the accumulation of up to 30% of added OM by the end of the experiment indicated a saturation of the heterotrophic microbial communities in the upper enriched surface layer. These results suggest a maximum diagenetic capacity for OM degradation in the range of ~25 μmol C cm?3 day?1 or 260 mmol m?2 day?1 for the present sediment types.  相似文献

Artificial reservoirs likely accumulate more carbon than natural lakes due to their unusually high sedimentation rates. Nevertheless, the actual magnitude of carbon accumulating in reservoirs is poorly known due to a lack of whole-system studies of carbon burial. We determined the organic carbon (OC) burial rate and the total OC stock in the sediments of a tropical hydroelectric reservoir by combining a seismic survey with sediment core sampling. Our data suggest that no sediment accumulation occurs along the margins of the reservoir and that irregular bottom morphology leads to irregular sediment deposition. Such heterogeneous sedimentation resulted in high spatial variation in OC burial—from 0 to 209 g C m?2 y?1. Based on a regression between sediment accumulation and OC burial rates (R 2 = 0.94), and on the mean reservoir sediment accumulation rate (0.51 cm y?1, from the seismic survey), the whole-reservoir OC burial rate was estimated at 42.2 g C m?2 y?1. This rate was equivalent to 70% of the reported carbon emissions from the reservoir surface to the atmosphere and corresponded to a total sediment OC accumulation of 0.62 Tg C since the reservoir was created. The approach we propose here allows an inexpensive and integrative assessment of OC burial in reservoirs by taking into account the high degree of spatial variability and based on a single assessment. Because burial can be assessed shortly after the survey, the approach combining a seismic survey and coring could, if applied on a larger scale, contribute to a more complete estimate of carbon stocks in freshwater systems in a relatively short period of time.  相似文献

Extensive interfluvial wetlands occur in the upper Negro River basin (Brazil) and contain a mosaic of vegetation dominated by emergent grasses and sedges with patches of shrubs and palms. To characterize the release of carbon dioxide and methane from these habitats, diffusive and ebullitive emissions and transport through plant aerenchyma were measured monthly during 2005 in permanently and seasonally flooded areas. CO2 emissions averaged 2193 mg C m?2 day?1. Methane was consumed in unflooded environments and emitted in flooded environments with average values of ?4.8 and 60 mg C m?2 day?1, respectively. Bubbles were emitted primarily during falling water periods when hydrostatic pressure at the sediment?Cwater interface declined. CO2 and CH4 emissions increased when dissolved O2 decreased and vegetation was more abundant. Total area and seasonally varying flooded areas for two wetlands, located north and south of the Negro River, were determined through analysis of synthetic aperture radar and optical remotely sensed data. The combined areas of these two wetlands (3000 km2) emitted 1147 Gg C year?1 as CO2 and 31 Gg C year?1 as CH4. If these rates are extrapolated to the area occupied by hydromorphic soils in the upper Negro basin, 63 Tg C year?1 of CO2 and 1.7 Tg C year?1 as CH4 are estimated as the regional evasion to the atmosphere.  相似文献

The transfer of carbon (C) from Amazon forests to aquatic ecosystems as CO2 supersaturated in groundwater that outgases to the atmosphere after it reaches small streams has been postulated to be an important component of terrestrial ecosystem C budgets. We measured C losses as soil respiration and methane (CH4) flux, direct CO2 and CH4 fluxes from the stream surface and fluvial export of dissolved inorganic C (DIC), dissolved organic C (DOC), and particulate C over an annual hydrologic cycle from a 1,319-ha forested Amazon perennial first-order headwater watershed at Tanguro Ranch in the southern Amazon state of Mato Grosso. Stream pCO2 concentrations ranged from 6,491 to 14,976 ??atm and directly-measured stream CO2 outgassing flux was 5,994 ± 677 g C m?2 y?1 of stream surface. Stream pCH4 concentrations ranged from 291 to 438 ??atm and measured stream CH4 outgassing flux was 987 ± 221 g C m?2 y?1. Despite high flux rates from the stream surface, the small area of stream itself (970 m2, or 0.007% of watershed area) led to small directly-measured annual fluxes of CO2 (0.44 ± 0.05 g C m2 y?1) and CH4 (0.07 ± 0.02 g C m2 y?1) per unit watershed land area. Measured fluvial export of DIC (0.78 ± 0.04 g C m?2 y?1), DOC (0.16 ± 0.03 g C m?2 y?1) and coarse plus fine particulate C (0.001 ± 0.001 g C m?2 y?1) per unit watershed land area were also small. However, stream discharge accounted for only 12% of the modeled annual watershed water output because deep groundwater flows dominated total runoff from the watershed. When C in this bypassing groundwater was included, total watershed export was 10.83 g C m?2 y?1 as CO2 outgassing, 11.29 g C m?2 y?1 as fluvial DIC and 0.64 g C m?2 y?1 as fluvial DOC. Outgassing fluxes were somewhat lower than the 40?C50 g C m?2 y?1 reported from other Amazon watersheds and may result in part from lower annual rainfall at Tanguro. Total stream-associated gaseous C losses were two orders of magnitude less than soil respiration (696 ± 147 g C m?2 y?1), but total losses of C transported by water comprised up to about 20% of the ± 150 g C m?2 (±1.5 Mg C ha?1) that is exchanged annually across Amazon tropical forest canopies.  相似文献

In shallow lakes with large littoral zones, epiphytes and submerged macrophytes can make an important contribution to the total annual primary production. We investigated the primary production (PP) of phytoplankton, submerged macrophytes, and their epiphytes, from June to August 2005, in two large shallow lakes. The production of pelagic and littoral phytoplankton and of the dominant submerged macrophytes in the littoral zone (Potamogeton perfoliatus in Lake Peipsi and P. perfoliatus and Myriopyllum spicatum in Lake Võrtsjärv) and of their epiphytes was measured using a modified 14C method. The total PP of the submerged macrophyte area was similar in both lakes: 12.4 g C m?2 day?1 in Peipsi and 12.0 g C m?2 day?1 in Võrtsjärv. In Peipsi, 84.2% of this production was accounted for by macrophytes, while the shares of phytoplankton and epiphytes were low (15.6 and 0.16%, respectively). In Võrtsjärv, macrophytes contributed 58%, phytoplankton 41.9% and epiphytes 0.1% of the PP in the submerged macrophyte area. Epiphyte production in both lakes was very low in comparison with that of phytoplankton and macrophytes: 0.01, 5.04, and 6.97 g C m?2 day?1, respectively, in Võrtsjärv, and 0.02, 1.93, and 10.5 g C m?2 day?1, respectively, in Peipsi. The PP of the littoral area contributed 10% of the total summer PP of Lake Peipsi sensu stricto and 35.5% of the total summer PP of Lake Võrtsjärv.  相似文献

In northeastern Canada, at the ecotonal limit of the forest tundra and lichen woodland, a rise of the regional water table in the peatland systems was registered since Little Ice Age resulting in increasing pool compartment at the expense of terrestrial surfaces. We hypothesized that, with a mean water table closer to peat surface and higher pool density, these ecosystems would be great CH4 emitters. In summers 2009 and 2010, methane fluxes were measured in a patterned fen located in the northeastern portion of the La Grande river watershed to determine the contribution of the different microforms (lawns, hollows, hummocks, string, pools) to the annual CH4 budget. Mean seasonal CH4 fluxes from terrestrial microforms ranged between 12.9 and 49.4 mg m?2 day?1 in 2009 and 15.4 and 47.3 mg m?2 day?1 in 2010. Pool fluxes (which do not include ebullition fluxes) ranged between 102.6 and 197.6 mg CH4 m?2 day?1 in 2009 and 76.5 and 188.1 mg CH4 m?2 day?1 in 2010. Highest fluxes were measured in microforms with water table closer to peat surface but no significant relationship was observed between water table depth and CH4 fluxes. Spatially weighted CH4 budget demonstrates that, during the growing season, the studied peatland emitted 66 ± 31 in 2009 and 55 ± 26 mg CH4 m?2 day?1 in 2010, 79 % of which is accounted by pool fluxes. In a context where climate projections predict greater precipitations in northeastern Canada, these results indicate that this type of peatlands could contribute to modify the methane balance in the atmosphere.  相似文献

The Red River, draining a 169,000 km2 watershed, is the second largest river in Viet Nam and constitutes the main source of water for a large percentage of the population of North Viet Nam. Here we present the results of an investigation into the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC and DOC, respectively) in the Red River Basin. POC concentrations ranged from 0.24 to 5.80 mg C L?1 and DOC concentrations ranged from 0.26 to 5.39 mg C L?1. The application of the Seneque/Riverstrahler model to monthly POC and DOC measurements showed that, in general, the model simulations of the temporal variations and spatial distribution of organic carbon (OC) concentration followed the observed trends. They also show the impact of high population densities (up to 994 inhab km?2 in the delta area) on OC inputs in surface runoff from the different land use classes and from urban point sources. A budget of the main fluxes of OC in the whole river network, including diffuse inputs from soil leaching and runoff and point sources from urban centers, as well as algal net primary production and heterotrophic respiration was established using the model results. It shows the predominantly heterotrophic character of the river system and provides an estimate of CO2 emissions from the river of 330 Gg C year?1. This value is in reasonable agreement with the few available direct measurements of CO2 fluxes in the downstream part of the river network.  相似文献

Riparian zones are an important strategy to mitigate N and P export to streams. However, their efficiency with respect to nitrate (NO3 ?), ammonium (NH4 +), or soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in groundwater remains uncertain in the US Midwest. This study investigates water table fluctuations and NO3 ?, NH4 +, and SRP concentration dynamics in two riparian zone types (outwash vs. glacial till) common in the upper US Midwest. During low water table periods, NO3 ? removal was 93 % at WR (outwash site), and 75 % at LWD (glacial till site); but during high water table periods, NO3 ? removal efficiencies dropped to 50 % at WR, and 14 % at LWD. Median seasonal mass fluxes of NO3 ? removed at WR (9.4–21.7 mg N day?1 m?1 of stream length) and LWD (0.4–1.9 mg N day?1 m?1) were small compared to other riparian zones in glaciated landscapes. The WR site was a small SRP sink (0.114 and 0.118 mg day?1 m?1 during the dry period and wet period, respectively), while LWD acted as a small SRP source to the stream (0.004 mg day?1 m?1 during the dry period; 0.075 mg day?1 m?1 during the wet period). Both LWD and WR acted as sources of NH4 + to the stream with mass fluxes ranging from 0.17 to 7.75 mg N day?1 m?1. Although riparian zones in the US Midwest provide many ecosystem services, results suggest they are unlikely to efficiently mitigate N and P pollution in subsurface flow.  相似文献

Myall Lakes has experienced algal blooms in recent years which threaten water quality. Biomarkers, benthic fluxes measured with chambers, and pore water metabolites were used to identify the nature and reactivity of organic matter (OM) in the sediments of Bombah Broadwater (BB), and the processes controlling sediment-nutrient release into the overlying waters. The OM in the sediments was principally from algal sources although terrestrial OM was found near the Myall River. Terrestrial faecal matter was identified in muddy sediments and was probably sourced via runoff from farm lands. The reactive OM which released nutrients into the overlying waters was from diatoms, dinoflagellates and probably cyanobacteria. Microcystis filaments were observed in surface sediments. OM degradation rates varied between 5.3 and 47.1 mmol m?2 day?1 (64–565 mg m?2 day?1), were highest in the muddy sediments and sulphate reduction rates accounted for 20–40% of the OM degraded. Diatoms, being heavy sink rapidly, and are an important vector to transport catchment N and P to sites of denitrification and P-trapping in the sediments. Denitrification rates (mean ~4 mmol N m?2 day?1), up to 7 mmol N m?2 day?1 (105 mg N m?2 day?1) were measured, and denitrification efficiencies were highest (mean = 86 ± 4%) in the sandy sediments (~20% of the area of BB), but lower in the muddy sediments (mean = 63 ± 15%). These differences probably result from higher OM loads and anaerobic respiration in muddy sediments. Most DIP (>70%) from OM degradation was not released into overlying waters but remained trapped in surface sediments. Biophysical (advective) processes were responsible for the measured metabolite (O2, CO2, DSi, DIN and DIP) fluxes across the sediment–water interface.  相似文献

The microbial segment of food webs plays a crucial role in lacustrine food-web functioning and carbon transfer, thereby influencing carbon storage and CO2 emission and uptake in freshwater environments. Variability in microbial carbon processing (autotrophic and heterotrophic production and respiration based on glucose) with depth was investigated in eutrophic, methane-rich Lake Rotsee, Switzerland. In June 2011, 13C-labelling experiments were carried out at six depth intervals in the water column under ambient light as well as dark conditions to evaluate the relative importance of (chemo)autotrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic production. Label incorporation rates of phospholipid-derived fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers allowed us to differentiate between microbial producers and calculate group-specific production. We conclude that at 6 m, net primary production (NPP) rates were highest, dominated by algal photoautotrophic production. At 10 m —the base of the oxycline— a distinct low-light community was able to fix inorganic carbon, while in the hypolimnion, heterotrophic production prevailed. At 2 m depth, high label incorporation into POC could only be traced to nonspecific PLFA, which prevented definite identification, but suggests cyanobacteria as dominating organisms. There was also depth zonation in extracellular carbon release and heterotrophic bacterial growth on recently fixed carbon. Large differences were observed between concentrations and label incorporation of POC and biomarkers, with large pools of inactive biomass settling in the hypolimnion, suggesting late-/post-bloom conditions. Net primary production (115 mmol C m?2 d?1) reached highest values in the epilimnion and was higher than glucose-based production (3.3 mmol C m?2 d?1, highest rates in the hypolimnion) and respiration (5.9 mmol C m?2 d?1, highest rates in the epilimnion). Hence, eutrophic Lake Rotsee was net autotrophic during our experiments, potentially storing large amounts of carbon.  相似文献

The Kobresia pastures of the Tibetan Plateau represent the world’s largest alpine grassland ecosystem. These pastures remained stable during the last millennia of nomadic animal husbandry. However, strongly increased herds’ density has promoted overgrazing, with unclear consequences for vegetation and soils, particularly for cycles of carbon (C), nutrients and water. Vegetation-free patches of dead root-mat covered by blue-green algae and crustose lichens (crusts) are common in overgrazed Kobresia pastures, but their effect on C turnover processes is completely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that the crusts strongly affect the C cycle by examining: (i) the long-term C stock measured as soil organic matter content; (ii) medium-term C stock as dead roots; (iii) recent C fluxes analyzed as living roots and CO2 efflux; and (iv) fast decomposition of root exudates. Up to 7.5 times less aboveground and 1.9 times less belowground living biomass were found in crust patches, reflecting a much smaller C input to soil as compared with the non-crust Kobresia patches. A lower C input initially changed the long-term C stock under crusts in the upper root-mat horizon. Linear regression between living roots and CO2 efflux showed that roots contributed 23% to total CO2 under non-crust areas (mean July–August 5.4 g C m?2 day?1) and 18% under crusts (5.1 g C m?2 day?1). To identify differences in the fast turnover processes in soil, we added 13C labeled glucose, glycine and acetic acid, representing the three main groups of root exudates. The decomposition rates of glucose (0.7 day?1), glycine (1.5 day?1) and acetic acid (1.2 day?1) did not differ under crusts and non-crusts. More 13C, however, remained in soil under crusts, reflecting less complete decomposition of exudates and less root uptake. This shows that the crust patches decrease the rates of medium-term C turnover in response to the much lower C input. Very high 13C amounts recovered in plants from non-crust areas as well as the two times lower uptake by roots under crusts indicate that very dense roots are efficient competitors with microorganisms for soluble organics. In conclusion, the altered C cycle in the overgrazing-induced crustose lichens and blue-green algae crusts is connected with strongly decreased C input and reduced medium-term C turnover.  相似文献

Ephemeral streams and wetlands are characterized by complex cycles of submersion and emersion, which influence the greenhouse gas flux rates. In this study we quantify the spatiotemporal variability in CO2 and CH4 concentrations and fluxes of an intermittent first-order stream over three consecutive wet and dry cycles spanning 56 days, to assess how hydrologic phase transitions influence greenhouse gas evasion. Water column excess CO2 ranged from ?11 to 1600 μM, and excess CH4 from 1 to 15 μM. After accounting for temporal changes in the ratio of wet versus dry streambed hydraulic radius, total CO2–C fluxes ranged from 12 to 156 mmol m?2 day?1, with an integrated daily mean of 61 ± 25 mmol m?2 day?1. Soil–air evasion rates were approximately equal to those of water–air evasion. Rainfall increased background water–air CO2–C fluxes by up to 780% due to an increase in gas transfer velocity in the otherwise still waters. CH4–C fluxes increased 19-fold over the duration of the initial, longer wet-cycle from 0.1 to 1.9 mmol m?2 day?1. Temporal shifts in water depth and site-specific ephemerality were key drivers of carbon dynamics in the upper Jamison Creek watercourse. Based on these findings, we hypothesise that the cyclic periodicity of fluxes of biogenic gases from frequently intermittent streams (wet and dry cycles ranging from days to weeks) and seasonally ephemeral watercourses (dry for months at a time) are likely to differ, and therefore these differences should be considered when integrating transient systems into regional carbon budgets and models of global change.  相似文献

Bog ecosystems are sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance, including drainage and air pollution. Carbon (C) balance measurements to determine the effect of disturbance on bog functioning are laborious; therefore reliable proxies for C fluxes that could facilitate upscaling from single studies to a larger scale would be valuable. We measured peat CO2 emissions (R s), CH4 efflux and vegetation characteristics in four bog areas that formed a gradient from pristine to severely disturbed peatlands, affected by drainage, peat mining, alkaline air pollution and underground oil-shale mining. We expected that sites experiencing higher human impact (i.e., the vegetation was more distinct from that of a natural bog) would have higher R s and lower CH4 emissions, but differences in peat C emissions between the most disturbed and pristine sites were not significant. Growing period median R s ranged from 0.5 to 2.2 g C m?2 day?1 for our plots; methane emissions, measured from July to December were an order of magnitude lower, ranging from ?5.9 to 126.7 mg C m?2 day?1. R s and CH4 emissions were primarily determined by water table depth, as was tree stand productivity. Therefore, stand structural parameters could potentially be good indicators of soil C emissions from poorly drained forested bogs.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Sedimenting seston was collected in May-November 1976 and 1977 in sedimentation traps anchored 0.5 m above the pelagic sediments of hypereutrophic Wintergreen Lake. Sedimentation rates differed greatly in the two years studied, ranging from 2.7 to 19.3 g m?2 day?1 in 1976 and from 2.6 to 9.5 g m?2 day?1 in 1977. Because of the shallowness of the lake (maximum depth 6.5 m), the quantity and quality of sedimenting particulate organic matter (POM) was closely linked to the production dynamics of the phytoplankton. Chemical analyses indicated that the sedimenting POM was planktonic in origin and, in contrast to that of many deeper lakes, was dominated by protein. Short sedimentation distances coupled with the close proximity of the anaerobic hypolimnion to the photic zone ensured that the majority of sedimenting POM reached the sediments in a relatively undegraded form.  相似文献

A method is presented for estimating sinking population, rate of production, and residence time in the living zone for Radiolaria. This method employs vertical flux measurements from PARFLUX sediment traps and laboratory sinking speed measurements of the radiolarian skeletons. The estimated population sinking through the oceanic water column is approximately equal to the standing stock at several hundred meters depth reported from direct measurements by other workers. The rate of production of total Radiolaria was estimated to be approximately 80 shells m?3 day?1 in the western equatorial Atlantic (E) and central Pacific (P1) stations and 230 shells m?3 day?1 in the Panama Basin (PB). The production of Nassellaria is greater than that of the other suborders. The average residence time for Radiolaria in the living zone (0–200 m) was estimated to be between 16 and 42 days.  相似文献

The amounts, sources and relative ages of inorganic and organic carbon pools were assessed in eight headwater streams draining watersheds dominated by either forest, pasture, cropland or urban development in the lower Chesapeake Bay region (Virginia, USA). Streams were sampled at baseflow conditions six different times over 1 year. The sources and ages of the carbon pools were characterized by isotopic (δ13C and ?14C) analyses and excitation emission matrix fluorescence with parallel factor analysis (EEM–PARAFAC). The findings from this study showed that human land use may alter aquatic carbon cycling in three primary ways. First, human land use affects the sources and ages of DIC by controlling different rates of weathering and erosion. Relative to dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in forested streams which originated primarily from respiration of young, 14C-enriched organic matter (OM; δ13C = ?22.2 ± 3 ‰; ?14C = 69 ± 14 ‰), DIC in urbanized streams was influenced more by sedimentary carbonate weathering (δ13C = ?12.4 ± 1 ‰; ?14C = ?270 ± 37 ‰) and one of pasture streams showed a greater influence from young soil carbonates (δ13C = ?5.7 ± 2.5 ‰; ?14C = 69 ‰). Second, human land use alters the proportions of terrestrial versus autochthonous/microbial sources of stream water OM. Fluorescence properties of dissolved OM (DOM) and the C:N of particulate OM (POM) suggested that streams draining human-altered watersheds contained greater relative contributions of DOM and POM from autochthonous/microbial sources than forested streams. Third, human land uses can mobilize geologically aged inorganic carbon and enable its participation in contemporary carbon cycling. Aged DOM (?14C = ?248 to ?202 ‰, equivalent14C ages of 1,811–2,284 years BP) and POM (?14C = ?90 to ?88 ‰, 14C ages of 669–887 years BP) were observed exclusively in urbanized streams, presumably a result of autotrophic fixation of aged DIC (?297 to ?244 ‰, 14C age = 2,251–2,833 years BP) from sedimentary shell dissolution and perhaps also watershed export of fossil fuel carbon. This study demonstrates that human land use may have significant impacts on the amounts, sources, ages and cycling of carbon in headwater streams and their associated watersheds.  相似文献

1. Side‐arms connected to the main stem of the river are key areas for biogeochemical cycling in fluvial landscapes, exhibiting high rates of carbon processing. 2. This work focused on quantifying autochthonous and allochthonous carbon pools and, thereby, on comparing transport and transformation processes in a restored side‐arm system of the River Danube (Regelsbrunn). We established a carbon budget and quantified carbon processing from March to September 2003. In addition, data from previous studies during 1997 to 1999 were assessed. 3. Gross primary production (GPP) and community respiration were estimated by diel oxygen time curves and an oxygen mass balance. Plankton primary production was determined to estimate its contribution to GPP under different hydrological conditions. 4. Based on the degree of connectivity, three hydrological phases were differentiated. Most of the organic matter, dominated by allochthonous carbon, was transported in the main channel and through the side‐arm during floods, while at intermediate and low flows (and thus connectivity), transformation processes became more important and autochthonous carbon dominated the carbon pool. The side‐arm system functioned as a sink for particulate matter [total suspended solids and particulate organic carbon (POC)] and a source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorophyll‐a. 5. Autochthonous primary production of 4.2 t C day?1 in the side‐arm was equivalent to about 20% of the allochthonous inputs of 20 t C day?1 (POC and DOC) entering the area at mean flow (1% of the discharge of the main channel). Pelagic photosynthesis was generally high at mean flow (1.3–3.8 g C m?2 day?1), and contributed up to 90% of system productivity. During long stagnant periods at low discharge, the side‐arm was controlled by biological processes and a shift from planktonic to benthic activity occurred (benthic primary production of 0.4–14 g C m?2 day?1). 6. The transformation of the organic matter that passes through the side‐arm under different hydrological conditions, points to the importance of these subsystems in contributing autochthonous carbon to the food web of the main channel.  相似文献

The high cost of aeration needed to tumble culture macroalgae is a limiting factor for integration with land-based finfish culture. Toward reducing this electricity cost, we compared intermittent aeration (16 h on:8 h off) with continuous aeration (24 h on) on the productivity of two strains of Chondrus crispus (Basin Head and Charlesville) and Palmaria palmata from Atlantic Canada between May and June 2011. Algal fronds were cultured under a 16:8-h light/dark photoperiod in 50-L tanks supplied with finfish effluent (49 μmol L?1 of ammonium and 11 μmol L?1 of phosphate) at a mean water flow rate of 0.4 L min?1. Nitrogen (N) influx was 1.8 gN m?2 day?1, and phosphorus (P) influx was 0.9 gP m?2 day?1, with uptake rates ranging from 0.02 to 2.4 gN m?2 day?1 and ?0.2 to 0.4 gP m?2 day?1. On average, the macroalgae culture system (algae and biofilms) removed 1.0 gN m?2 day?1 (51.9 %). The growth of macroalgae (pooled across treatment and strain) ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 % day?1, which accounted for a yield of 2.2 to 5.4 g DW m?2 day?1. Switching off aeration at night improved the growth rate of Basin Head Chondrus by 146 % and had no effect on growth rate or nitrogen and carbon removal by P. palmata and Charlesville Chondrus. Growth and yield of Basin Head Chondrus under intermittent aeration were over two times greater than both Charlesville Chondrus treatments.  相似文献

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is considered as a major carbon source in subsoils. As soil water fluxes are highly variable at small scale, and transport versus sorptive retention of DOM is related to water flux and associated contact time with minerals, knowledge of the small scale spatial variability of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and fluxes into the subsoil is decisive for a solid estimation of organic carbon (OC) translocation into the subsoil. Here, we made advantage of novel segmented suction plates (4 × 4 segments, each 36 cm2) to analyze the small scale spatial and temporal variability of DOC transport at 10, 50 and 150 cm depth of three subsoil observatories (approximately 50 m apart) in a sandy Dystric Cambisol under beech in the Grinderwald, 40 km northwest from Hannover, Germany. Water fluxes, DOC concentrations and fluxes as well as the specific UV absorbance (SUVA) at 280 nm were determined in weekly samples from August 2014 to November 2015 for each individual segment. The DOC fluxes decreased with depth (19.6 g C m?2 year?1, 10 cm; 1.2 g C m?2 year?1, 150 cm) and were strongly related to the water fluxes. The SUVA at 280 nm also decreased with depth (0.03 L mg C?1 cm?1, 10 cm; 0.01 L mg C?1 cm?1, 150 cm), indicating a selective retention of aromatic moieties, that was eased with increasing water flux at least in the subsoil. The proportion of temporal fluctuations and small scale variability on the total variance of each parameter where determined by the calculation of intra class correlations. The seasonal heterogeneity and the small scale spatial heterogeneity were identified to be of major importance. The importance of the small scale spatial heterogeneity strongly increased with depth, pointing towards the stability of flow paths and suggesting that at a given substrate hydrological processes rather than physicochemical processes are decisive for the sorptive retention of DOM and the variability of OC accumulation in the subsoil. Our results clearly show the demand of small scale sampling for the identification of processes regarding carbon cycling in the subsoil.  相似文献
