We hypothesized that the trophic level of marine copepods should depend on the composition of the protist community. To test this hypothesis, we manipulated the phytoplankton composition in mesocosms and measured grazing rates of copepods and mesozooplankton in those mesocosms. Twelve mesocosms with Northeast Atlantic phytoplankton were fertilised with different Si:N ratios from 0:1 to 1:1. After 1 week, ten of the mesocosms were filled with natural densities of mesozooplankton, mainly calanoid copepods, while two remained as mesozooplankton-free controls. Both before and after the addition of copepods there was a positive correlation of diatom dominance with Si:N ratios. During the second phase of the experiment, copepod and microzooplankton grazing rates on different phytoplankton species were assessed by a modification of the Landry-Hassett dilution technique, where the bottles containing the different dilution treatments were replaced by dialysis bags incubated in situ. The results indicated no overlap in the food spectrum of microzooplankton (mainly ciliates) and copepods. Ciliates fed on nanoplankton, while copepods fed on large or chain-forming diatoms, naked dinoflagellates, and ciliates. The calculated trophic level of copepods showed a significantly negative but weak correlation with Si:N ratios. The strength of this response was strongly dependent on the trophic levels assumed for ciliates and mixotrophic dinoflagellates.  相似文献

We explored statistical relationships between the composition of littoral diatom assemblages and 21 chemical and physical environmental variables in 69 lakes and 15 river sites in the lowland of northeastern Germany. Canonical correspondence analysis with single treatment and with forward selection of environmental variables was used to detect 11 important ecological variables (dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC], Na + , total phosphorus [TP], dissolved organic carbon [DOC], total nitrogen [TN], pH, oxygen saturation, dissolved iron, SO42 ? , NH4 + , soluble reactive silicium) and maximum water depth or Ca2 + or soluble reactive phosphorus that most independently explain major proportions of the total diatom variance among the habitats. Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that each contributed a significant additional proportion (P < 0.05) of the variance in species composition. Together, these 11 most important environmental variables explained 34% of the total variance in species composition among the sites and captured 73% of the explained variance from the full 21 parameters model. Weighted‐averaging regression and calibration of 304 indicator taxa with tolerance down‐weighting and classic deshrinking was used to develop transfer functions between littoral diatoms and DIC, pH, TP, TN, and Cl ? . The DOC:TP ratio was introduced and a weighted‐averaging model was developed to infer allochthonous DOC effects in freshwater ecosystems. This diatom‐DOC/TP model was significant (P < 0.001) and explained 7.6% of the total diatom variance among the sites, surpassing the inferential power of the diatom‐TP‐transfer function (7.3% explained variance). The root‐mean‐square errors of prediction of the models were estimated by jack‐knifing and were comparable with published data sets from surface sediment diatom samples. The data set of littoral diatoms and environmental variables allows use of the diatom‐environmental transfer functions in biomonitoring and paleolimnological approaches across a broad array of natural water resources (such as floodplains, flushed lakes, estuaries, shallow lakes) in the central European lowland ecoregion.  相似文献

The composition and temporal changes in phytoplankton populationswere evaluated in local upwelling off the Izu Peninsula. Japan.in May. 1982. Phytoplankton in the upwelled water was dominatedby diatoms and that in the surrounding water by various flagellatesand monads. Phytoplankton started logarithmic growth almostimmediately after subsurface nutrient-rich water was upwellinginto the euphotic zone and nutrients were depleted within afew days. Growth enhancement was most striking among diatoms. As a result >50% of the total phytoplankton biomass of cells>2 µm was from a centric diatom. Leptocylindrus danicus. The results confirmed many past observations of the dominanceof diatoms in upwelled water. Such dominance is explained bythe rapid growth of diatoms when nutrient concentrations areenhanced.  相似文献

DCMU–enhanced fluorescence and extracted chlorophyll a were simultaneously measured in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island and the MERL (Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory) mesocosms during the 1985 brown tide bloom. Marked differences in the relationship between these variables were observed as the phytoplankton community shifted from dominance by picoalgae to diatoms. The fluorescence to chlorophyll a ratio was significantly (P< 0.05) higher in the mesocosms and the bay when the brown tide species (Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth) dominated the phytoplankton community compared with other taxa. Although several factors could have affected the relationship we believe the high ratios are related to the pigment composition and/or small size of the brown tide organism.  相似文献

The major objective of these studies was to assess the extent of the flow of released dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) from phytoplankton to heterotrophic bacteria. The second aim was to test Nalewajko and Schindler's (1976) hypothesis that the percentage of extracellular release (PER) of RDOC by phytoplankton is higher in oligotrophic than eutrophic waters. The studies on the relationship between the bacterial assimilation of RDOC and productivity of phytoplankton in the lakes of different trophy have shown a direct correlation. It was observed that higher utilization rate of phytoplankton RDOC occurred in lakes with higher primary production. The inverse relationship between productivity of lakes, i.e. trophy of waters, and amount of RDOC or PER is closely dependent on the heterotrophic activity of bacteria in waters.  相似文献

We used data from whole-lake studies to assess how changes in food quantity (phytoplankton biomass) and quality (phytoplankton community composition, seston C:P and N:P) with N fertilization affect zooplankton biomass, community composition and C:N:P stoichiometry, and their N:P recycling ratio along a gradient in lake DOC concentrations. We found that despite major differences in phytoplankton biomass with DOC (unimodal distributions, especially with N fertilization), no major differences in zooplankton biomass were detectable. Instead, phytoplankton to zooplankton biomass ratios were high, especially at intermediate DOC and after N fertilization, implying low trophic transfer efficiencies. An explanation for the observed low phytoplankton resource use, and biomass responses in zooplankton, was dominance of colony forming chlorophytes of reduced edibility at intermediate lake DOC, combined with reduced phytoplankton mineral quality (enhanced seston N:P) with N fertilization. N fertilization, however, increased zooplankton N:P recycling ratios, with largest impact at low DOC where phytoplankton benefitted from light sufficiently to cause enhanced seston N:P. Our results suggest that although N enrichment and increased phytoplankton biomass do not necessarily increase zooplankton biomass, bottom-up effects may still impact zooplankton and their N:P recycling ratio through promotion of phytoplankton species of low edibility and altered mineral quality.

Flow regulation in lowland rivers has reduced the amount of allochthonous dissolved organic carbon (DOC) entering main channels through less frequent wetting of benches, flood runners and floodplains. The hypothesis tested was that lowland riverine bacterioplankton are DOC limited when flow events are absent and simulating an increase in assimilable DOC similar to that expected during an environmental flow will lead to heterotrophic dominance. Experiments took place in the Namoi River, a highly regulated lowland river in Australia. Specifically, in situ microcosms were used to examine the responses of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton to various additions of DOC as glucose or leaf leachate, with and without additions of inorganic nutrients. The results indicated that ambient DOC availability limited the bacterioplankton for the three seasons over which we conducted the experiments. When DOC was added alone, dissolved oxygen concentrations decreased primarily because of increased bacterial respiration and bacterioplankton growth generally increased relative to controls. Additions of DOC alone led to a pattern of decreased chlorophyll a concentration relative to controls, except for willow leachate. Additions of inorganic nutrients alone increased chlorophyll a concentrations above controls, indicating limitation of phytoplankton. These findings support our hypothesis. Based on the present results, environmental flows should increase the duration of allochthonously driven heterotrophic dominance, thus shifting regulated lowland rivers to more natural (pre-regulation) conditions for greater periods.  相似文献

The phytoplankton succession during the summer in the mesotrophic reservoir Saidenbach since 1975 may well be explained by the resource ratio hypothesis. Until 1980, only phosphorus controlled the phytoplankton growth, and diatoms prevailed, because an excesses of silicon existed. From 1981 to 1986, the ratio Si:P often was smaller than 90, a value, critical for the development of the diatom Fragilaria crotonensis. Its reduced growth caused an increased occurrence of blue-greens (mostly Aphanothece clathrata) immediately after the diatom mass development. During these years at first silicon limited phytoplankton growth in summer, later on the growth again was limited by phosphorus. Because of increased Si and P load since 1987 a simultaneous limitation of both nutrients occurs. This leads now to parallel mass developments of diatoms and blue-greens. In order to maintain the positive effect of diatoms (phosphorus transport into the sediment), it is to guarantee a sufficiently high Si:P ratio. If a reduction of P load isn't possible, Si remobilization from the sediment could be increased by artificial changes of the water level.  相似文献

We investigated the composition, biomass and cell size dynamics of the marine planktonic diatom species along a coastal-open sea gradient in relation to the hydrological characteristics, during four oceanographic cruises in July 2005, May–June 2006, September 2006 and March 2007 in the Gulf of Gabes. The study of the marine planktonic diatoms throughout the sampling period showed the presence of 40 different species belonging to 22 pennate and 18 centric diatom species. Centric diatoms were more abundant than the pennate ones; 56% and 44% of total diatom abundance, respectively. Diatoms were very abundant, representing about 60% of the total phytoplankton abundance, with an exception in July 2005 (19%) during which Dictyochophyceae were the most dominant group (41% of the total phytoplankton abundance). Diatoms, which were dominant in the coastal samples, mainly proliferate in the semi-mixing conditions (May–June 2006), whereas they declined in the offshore area, most likely due to silicate shortage. In this period, in spite of the high abundance of diatom planktonic cells, only diatom biomass was correlated with silica amount, proving that biomass was a better ecological bio-indicator than abundance. The results suggest that the marine planktonic diatoms taxa were generally adapted to specific hydrological structure. In fact, the dominance index of diatoms showed that the biodiversity of diatoms increased gradually along the coastal-open sea gradient except in May–June 2006 during which a slight decrease along the inshore towards offshore areas was observed. This index increase depended on a coastal-open sea distance during thermal stratification (July 2005 and September 2006) and mixing periods (March 2007).  相似文献

This report presents results on relationships between the kinetics (Vmax and Km) of -glucosidase (GLCase) and aminopeptidase (AMPase) activity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and bacterial secondary production in freshwater mesocosms of differing degrees of eutrophication. These relationships varied in different mesocosms and depended on the trophic status of water and the exudation rates of organic carbon (EOC) by phytoplankton. Close coupling of bacterial production to Vmax of GLCase activity was observed only in nutrient-enriched mesocosms. The relationship between GLCase and DOC content was also significant in enriched water. There was no correlation between the Vmax, of GLCase and DOC and bacterial production in nutrient-impoverished and control (mesotrophic) enclosures. However, the Vmax of AMPase correlated well to DOC and bacterial production in these mesocosms. AMPase activity did not correlate with DOC and bacterial production in nutrient-impoverished mesocosms. There was no relationship between bacterial biomass and enzyme activity in all studied mesocosms. Comparison of the rates of phytoplankton production of EOC and rates of the bacterial organic carbon demand (BOCD) in nutrient-impoverished mesocosms showed that EOC flux constituted, on average, 90% of BOCD. However, in nutrient-enriched mesocosms EOC contributed only, on average, 27% to the BOCD; thus, in these mesocosms, bacteria were probably organic-carbon limited. It is hypothesized that to bypass substrate limitation, bacteria produced GLCase and AMPase. These enzymes had a high specific activity and high affinity to their substrates and efficiently hydrolyzed polysaccharides and proteins, thereby supplying microorganisms with readily utilizable products of enzyme catalysis. 1. Three series of field experiments with different zooplankton species composition and biomass were performed in a small lake in the south Andes. We attempted to measure the responses of phytoplankton species resulting from grazing mortality and stimulation of growth by nutrient recycling.
2. Nanoflagellates contributed substantially to total phytoplankton cell abundance. Chrysochromulina parva represented 93.4%, 92.2% and 95.9% of total phytoplankton density in December, January and February, respectively. This fraction was reduced in all treatments with increasing zooplankton biomass.
3. A negative relationship was obtained between C. parva cell numbers and increase in dissolved P. On the other hand, a significant positive relationship between the abundance of the diatom Aulacoseira granulata and P concentration was observed. These results indicate that the ungrazed diatom was able to capitalise on the increase in nutrient availability.
4. As a net result of the increase or decrease of algal species we observed a change in the nano:net phytoplankton relationship. The outcome of three‐day incubations with increased zooplankton biomass was an increasing importance of net phytoplankton.
5. The results indicate the importance of the indirect effects of zooplankton (through nutrient recycling) in the increase in diatoms, and the role of grazing as a growth‐limiting factor for the flagellate C. parva .  相似文献

Lakes can be monitored using different bioindicators, among which phytoplankton and benthic diatoms. We compared these two indicators in Lake Geneva for nutrient assessment. Bimonthly samplings were carried out during one year in the euphotic layer of a pelagic site. In the same time four littoral sites were sampled at 40–50 cm depth. Species compositions and abundances of both bioindicators were analyzed following European standards. Water physico-chemical composition was analyzed at the same time. Seasonal succession of benthic diatom guilds was observed. The dynamics of benthic diatom communities were better correlated to the pelagic chemistry than to the local littoral chemistry. We also observed that in the sampling sites frequently exposed to winds and waves, benthic diatoms showed lower correlations to physico-chemical dynamics, because of an increase of pioneer diatoms abundance adapted to turbulent environment, such sites must be avoided for lake monitoring. Finally, biotic indices calculated with benthic diatoms in wind protected sites showed higher correlations with pelagic nutrient concentration (PO43−) than indices calculated with phytoplankton. This unexpected situation can be explained by differences of temporal variability of chemical and biological compartments. Littoral chemistry changed faster than pelagic chemistry because of rains, diffuse flow from watershed and rivers flowing in the littoral zone whereas pelagic chemistry has a much smoother evolution because it is situated 10 km from the coast. But phytoplankton showed a high temporal variability because of wind influence, which explained the low correlation with the smooth evolution of pelagic chemistry. On the other hand, benthic diatoms from sites protected from the dominant wind, showed a lower temporal variability and were more in synchrony with the smooth evolution of pelagic chemistry.Even if we show that diatom seem to be promising indicator of nutrient level of the lake, we also underline the complementarity of using both indicators: benthic diatom and phytoplankton. Each of them brings different information about temporal variability of the lake and about the functioning of different habitats. Comparing these two bioindicators only on the basis of nutrient correlation ability would be an over-simplification whom managers must be warned.  相似文献

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the phytoplankton assemblages of the Catalano-Balearic Sea (NW Mediterranean) was examined in relationship with frontal boundaries and short-term meteorological forcing originated by an intense wind storm. Data were obtained during February 1990, before and after strong NW winds, from several transects across the Catalan (continental side) and North Balearic (Balearic Islands side) shelf/slope fronts. High chlorophyll concentrations and diatom dominance inshore of the Catalan Front were typical of the winter-spring phytoplankton maximum. However, offshore of the Catalan Front, diatoms were scarce and the phytoplankton assemblage was dominated by coccolithophorids. In spite of weak density stratification, a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) was well developed, before the storm, offshore and appeared to cause a pulse of new production, as suggested by increased oxygen concentrations in the vicinity of the DCM. The results presented here indicate the existence of a persistent association between the distribution of distinct phytoplankton assemblages and hydrographic characteristics of the studied area. Our results also show that, at least during an important part of the winter-spring bloom period of the Catalano-Balearic Sea, high phytoplankton biomass offshore of the Catalan Front is not associated with the diatom dominance typically found in coastal waters and other offshore areas of the NW Mediterranean. This finding has biogeochemical implications in relationship with vertical export fluxes of particulate matter.   相似文献

We examined the impact of five silver carp biomass levels (0, 8, 16, 20, and 32 g m−3) on plankton communities and water quality of Villerest eutrophic reservoir (France). We realized the experiments using outdoor mesocosms. The presence of silver carp led to changes in zooplankton and phytoplankton assemblages. High fish biomass strongly reduced cladoceran abundance (through predation). Silver carp inefficiently grazed down particles < 20 μm. More importantly, however, the suppression of herbivorous cladocerans resulted in the increase of small size algae which were relieved from grazing and benefit from high nutrient concentrations. In contrast, in mesocosms without fish, the dominance of cladocerans (mainly Daphnia) controlled small size algae and probably also larger size algae (colonial chlorophytes, cyanobacteria). Thus, the Secchi disc transparency increased markedly. Through cascade effects, the modification of grazers communities led to changes in the utilization patterns of the added nutrients by phytoplankton communities. In high fish biomass treatments, nutrients were more efficiently accumulated into particulate fractions compared with no-fish and low-fish biomass treatments that were characterized by higher dissolved nutrients concentrations. Zooplankton was an essential source of food for silver carp. The productivity of zooplankton sustained a moderate silver carp biomass (up to 16 g m−3). In the presence of the highest fish biomass, the productivity of zooplankton was not large enough and silver carps fed on additional phytoplankton. Although mesocosms with high fish biomass were characterized by a slight cyanobacteria development compared with other fish mesocosms, silver carp was not effective in reducing cyanobacteria dominance. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

During the 1995 spring bloom in Bedford Basin, Nova Scotia, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the photic zone was separatedinto low-molecular-weight and colloidal size fractions by cross-flowultrafiltration. DOC, colloidal organic carbon (COC) and low-molecular-weightorganic carbon (LOC) were then analyzed by high-temperaturecatalytic oxidation. COC (associated with the production ofphytoplankton exudates) did not follow the concentration ofbulk chlorophyll a (chi a) or the total number of phytoplanktoncells. Instead, surface-active COC (that adhered to the ultrafiltrationsystem) was produced early during the bloom when the diatomSkeletonema costatum was at a maximum. Later on, as the bloombegan to decline, less surface-active COC (that remained largelyfree of the ultrafiltration surfaces) was produced and was associatedmore with variations in cell number of Chaetoceros socialis, the predominant diatom for most of the bloom. These resultssuggest that chl a or the total number of phytoplankton cellsmay not be reliable indices of the production of COC. On thecontrary, the results suggest that relatively high COC concentrationswere associated with specific diatom species. In addition, themaximum amount of COC was associated during the early stagesof the bloom with a diatom (S.costatum) that was a small fraction(<5.6%) of total phytoplankton cell number. This finding, that relatively large amounts of colloids were associated withexopolymer production during the onset and development of abloom, does not agree with reports suggesting that the productionof exopolymers by diatoms is primarily an end-of-bloom occurrence.  相似文献

Lake Große Fuchskuhle (Brandenburg, Germany) is a naturally acidic bog lake that was artificially divided into four basins by large plastic curtains for biomanipulation experiments in 1990. Different numbers of perch were added to each compartment beginning in the spring of 1993. The species composition and abundance of phytoplankton, pH, nutrient concentrations, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorophyll a content were analyzed at regular intervals during 1991 and 1998. The division of the lake resulted in divergent developments in the physical and chemical environment of the compartments. This study compared the phytoplankton assemblages of the Northeast- (NE) and Southwest- (SW) basins which differed strongly in chemistry during the investigation period. Divergent developments in phytoplankton species composition in both basins can be explained by changes in physical and chemical conditions (bottom-up effects). Increased pH values and DOC concentrations probably favoured mass developments of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium uberrimum since 1993, while increased nutrients (dissolved inorganic carbon, total nitrogen and especially total phosphorus) as well as further changes in pH and DOC led to the dominance of the raphidophyte Gonyostomum semen in 1998. This bloom was characterized by extreme biomasses of up to 143 mg l–1 wet weight, corresponding with high chlorophyll a concentrations of up to 413 g l–1 at the same time. In contrast, no significant relationship between experimental manipulations by piscivorous fish stocking (top-down effects) and phytoplankton biomass were observed.  相似文献

We studied the effect of nutrient inputs on the carbon (C) budget of rocky shore communities using a set of eight large experimental mesocosms. The mesocosms received a range of inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) additions, at an N:P ratio of 16. These additions were designed to elevate the background concentration, relative to that in eutrophic Oslofjord (Norway) waters, by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 μmol dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN)l−1 (and the corresponding P increase). Two unamended mesocosms were used as controls. The nutrients were added continuously for 27 months before gross primary production (GPP), respiration (R), net community production (NCP), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) production were assessed for the dominant algal species (Fucus serratus) and for the whole experimental ecosystem. Inputs and outputs of DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC) from the mesocosms were also quantified. The F. serratus communities were generally autotrophic (average P/R ratio = 1.33 ± 0.12), with the GPP independent of the nutrient inputs to the mesocosms, and maintained a high net DOC production during both day (0.026 ± 0.008 g C m−2 h−1) and night (0.015 ± 0.004 g C m−2 h−1). All the experimental rocky shore ecosystems were autotrophic (P/R ratio = 2.04 ± 0.28), and neither macroalgal biomass nor production varied significantly with increasing nutrient inputs. Most of the excess production from these autotrophic ecosystems was exported from the systems as DOC, which accounted for 69% and 58% of the NCP of the dominant community and the experimental ecosystem, respectively, the rest being lost as POC. High DOC release and subsequent export from the highly energetic environments occupied by rocky shore communities may prevent the development of eutrophication symptoms and render these communities resistant to eutrophication. 1. Field data from five unproductive Swedish lakes were used to investigate the occurrence of mixotrophic flagellates in relation to bacterioplankton, autotrophic phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates and abiotic environmental factors. Three different sources of data were used: (i) a 3‐year study (1995–97) of the humic Lake Örträsket, (ii) seasonal measurements from five lakes with widely varying dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and (iii) whole lake enrichment experiments with inorganic nutrients and organic carbon. 2. Mixotrophic flagellates usually dominated over autotrophic phytoplankton in Lake Örträsket in early summer, when both bacterial production and light levels were high. Comparative data from the five lakes demonstrated that the ratio between the biomasses of mixotrophic flagellates and autotrophic phytoplankton (the M/A‐ratio) was positively correlated to bacterioplankton production, but not to the light regime. Whole lake carbon addition (white sugar) increased bacterial biomass, and production, reduced the biomass of autotrophs by a factor of 16, and increased the M/A‐ratio from 0.03 to 3.4. Collectively, the results indicate that the dominance of mixotrophs among phytoplankton was positively related to bacterioplankton production. 3. Whole lake fertilisation with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) demonstrated that the obligate autotrophic phytoplankton was limited by N. N‐addition increased the biomass of the autotrophic phytoplankton but had no effect on mixotrophic flagellates or bacteria, and the M/A‐ratio decreased from 1.2 to 0.6 after N‐enrichment. Therefore, we suggest that bacteria under natural conditions, by utilising allochthonous DOC as an energy and carbon source, are able to outcompete autotrophs for available inorganic nutrients. Consequently, mixotrophic flagellates can become the dominant phytoplankters when phagotrophy permits them to use nutrients stored in bacterial biomass. 4. In Lake Örträsket, the biomass of mixotrophs was usually higher than the biomass of heterotrophs during the summer. This dominance could not be explained by higher grazing rates among the mixotrophs. Instead, ratios between mixotrophic and heterotrophic biomass (the M/H‐ratio) were positively related to light availability. Therefore, we suggest that photosynthesis can enable mixotrophic flagellates to outcompete heterotrophic flagellates.  相似文献

Relationships between resuspension events and phyt-oplankton biomass, compositional dynamics, and pro-duction were evaluated during 1998 and 1999. Increased water-column light attenuation (KPAR) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations corresponded with resuspension events within nearshore regions. However, neither KPAR nor SPM corresponded with chlorophyll (Chl) a concentrations, indicating no impact of resuspension on instantaneous biomass accumulation. Diatoms and cryptophytes dominated phytoplankton assemblages and together typically comprised greater than 85% of the Chl a. The associations of SPM/KPAR with diatom Chl a, and the inverse relationship between relative diatom and crypto-phyte Chl a corresponded with the dominance of diatoms and cryptophytes in near- and offshore waters, respectively. Moreover, a spatial variation in species composition occurred during resuspension events; small, centric diatoms exhibiting meroplanktonic life histories and large, pennate diatoms considered benthic in origin were associated with sediment resuspension whereas large, net diatoms and cryptophytes typically comprising phytoplankton of the annual spring bloom and of optically-clear, offshore waters were not. The presence of viable diatom photopigments and the abundance of small centric diatoms within the surficial sediments, established this layer as the source of meroplankton. Integral production was dramatically reduced within sediment-impacted waters; however, nearshore assemblages appeared to have greater photosynthetic capacities than offshore assemblages. Although resuspension dramatically influenced near-shore phytoplankton assemblages, it appeared to have little, if any relationship with the compositional development of the annual spring bloom.  相似文献

Phytoplankton composition and production are highly unpredictable within an estuary, due to the high variability of forcing factors, such as freshwater flow, salinity, nutrients and light. The Guadiana estuary has shown sharp inter-annual differences in freshwater flow, related to variable precipitation, which is expected to affect nutrient loadings, light availability and phytoplankton succession. Water retention due to dam construction will further enhance changes in river flow and ecosystem dynamics. The main goal of the present study was to describe and relate phytoplankton succession and environmental conditions, namely nutrients and light, in the Guadiana upper estuary (south-western Iberian Peninsula), a dam regulated temperate estuary. From March 2004 to October 2005, water samples were collected in three stations along a longitudinal transect covering the upper estuary. Several water variables were determined and phytoplankton composition was studied through inverted and epifluorescence microscopy. A typical freshwater phytoplankton succession was observed, from a diatom spring bloom to cyanobacteria dominance in the summer, and a second diatom bloom in the autumn. Neither nutrients nor light availability seemed to be related to the observed succession, especially the seasonal variation of diatom abundance. During summer, nutrient concentrations (especially Si) were high and non-limiting, whilst light was available in the mixing layer. However, diatoms were present in low numbers. Grazing pressure was probably responsible for the regulation of diatom seasonal succession in the Guadiana upper estuary, which should be addressed in future studies. Handling editor: K.
