Abstract

This paper examines the usefulness of one‐sex and two‐sex utility models of reproductive behavior in predicting births as consequences of wives’ and husbands’ perceptions of the costs and benefits of another child. We used longitudinal data on a sample of 280 white and 69 black young urban American couples. For whites, female models are mostly better than male models. Two‐sex models generally predict more variance than female models. We show that the white wife's utility considerations dominate the predictions, with husband as a junior partner and partial redundancy of female and male models. The utility considerations of black husbands dominate the predictions, with wives as junior partners and no redundancy in female and male models. We conclude that neither sex incorporates completely the spouse's utility considerations into its own utility structure. Because some male models are surprisingly strong, researchers cannot omit males without running the risk of leaving out an important component of the determinants of fertility.  相似文献

We measured serum calcium concentrations in mature white suckers and bluegills collected from clear-water Wisconsin lakes before spawning. The mean serum calcium concentration in female white suckers was greater in a circumneutral lake than in two naturally acidic lakes, whereas mean concentrations in fish from the two acidic lakes did not differ. Serum calcium concentrations in female bluegills from four acidic and four circumneutral lakes varied among lakes, but no relation was apparent between serum calcium level and either lake pH or waterborne calcium. In contrast, a strong negative correlation between mean serum calcium concentration and relative density of bluegill populations in the eight lakes was observed, suggesting that serum calcium levels in this species are affected by density-dependent factors. Mean serum calcium concentrations were substantially lower in mature male bluegills than in females, which is the norm prior to spawning. We hypothesized that serum calcium levels in female white suckers are depressed by exposure to pH 6.0 or less in calcium-poor waters. The utility of serum calcium concentrations, measured before spawning, as a measure of pH-related stress on populations of white suckers and other synchronous spawners merits further study. However, this measure is probably not useful for evaluating acid stress on fish species such as the bluegill, which have asynchronous reproductive cycles.  相似文献

Color ornaments are often viewed as products of countervailing sexual and natural selection, because more colorful, more attractive individuals may also be more conspicuous to predators. However, while evidence for such countervailing selection exists for vertebrate color ornaments (e.g., Trinidadian guppies), similar studies have yet to be reported in invertebrates. Indeed, evidence for female mate choice based on extant variation in male coloration is limited in invertebrates, and researchers have not explicitly asked whether more attractive males are also more conspicuous to predators. Here we provide evidence that more chromatic male cabbage white butterflies (Pieris rapae) are more attractive to females but should also be more conspicuous to predators. Female P. rapae preferentially mate with more chromatic males when choosing from populations of males with naturally occurring or commensurate, experimentally induced color variation. Mathematical models of female color vision confirm that females should be able to discriminate color differences between prospective mates. Further, chromatic and luminance contrast scores from female visual system models better predicted male mating success than did measures of male color derived more directly from color spectra. Last, models of avian color vision suggest that preferred males should be more conspicuous to known avian predators.  相似文献

We present a series of prospective models of nuptial feeding, mainly for insects. The models examine various optimal male and female strategies, but do not include any element of mate choice in which the female chooses males in relation to the gift he provides. We find that the female should use the gift to enhance egg size and/or clutch size when gifts represent a relatively large component of the energy resources for the gametes, or when the gift occurs at a relatively late stage in her reproductive cycle. However, if the female receives a single, relatively small gift during her reproductive cycle, she should show a reduced gametic output at the next oviposition. A literature survey revealed several studies that show increases in egg and clutch sizes following gift donation, but we found no instances in which there was a reduction in gametic output. We also find that if gifts are infrequent, there can be significant sexual conflict over the pattern of allocation of donated resources to future offspring. Male interests will generally be best served by a more immediate use of the resources than will be optimal for the female. This may result in selection for male ability to influence vitellogenesis and/or oviposition. Evidence is available which shows that male-derived substances influence female physiology; this might reflect an outcome towards male interests as a result of an arms race in sexual conflict. Some studies have demonstrated an effect of gift donation on survivorship. We examine models in which gift donation reduces male survival but increases female survival. These suggest that gift donation is most likely to evolve when (1) giving a gift has little effect on male, but a significant effect on female survival, (2) when the male is more likely to father eggs in a later batch, rather than the next batch, and (3) when random mortality is high.  相似文献

Many animals defend territories against conspecific individuals using acoustic signals. In birds, male vocalizations are known to play a critical role in territory defence. Territorial acoustic signals in females have been poorly studied, perhaps because female song is uncommon in north‐temperate ecosystems. In this study, we compare male vs. female territorial singing behaviour in Neotropical rufous‐and‐white wrens Thryothorus rufalbus, a species where both sexes produce solo songs and often coordinate their songs in vocal duets. We recorded free‐living birds in Costa Rica using an eight‐microphone Acoustic Location System capable of passively triangulating the position of animals based on their vocalizations. We recorded 17 pairs of birds for 2–4 consecutive mornings and calculated the territory of each individual as a 95% fixed kernel estimate around their song posts. We compared territories calculated around male vs. female song posts, including separate analyses of solo vs. duet song posts. These spatial analyses of singing behaviour reveal that males and females use similarly sized territories with more than 60% overlap between breeding partners. Territories calculated based on solo vs. duet song posts were of similar size and similar degrees of overlap. Solos and duets were performed at similar distances from the nest for both sexes. Overall, male and female rufous‐and‐white wrens exhibit very similar spatial territorial singing behaviour, demonstrating congruent patterns of male and female territoriality.  相似文献

Intrasexual competition is an important selective force that can favor the evolution of honest signals of fighting ability. Research has focused predominantly on male birds, but many female birds also possess plumage ornaments that could mediate the outcome of competitive interactions. We examined the relationship between blue and white structural coloration and aggression in female tree swallows Tachycineta bicolor. Tree swallows are secondary cavity nesters and females show delayed plumage maturation which may be related to intense competition for nest sites. We compared plumage reflectance of second‐year (SY) and after‐second year (ASY) females, and within‐individual changes in plumage reflectance of ASY females in two successive years. We assessed aggression by placing a caged SY female 2 m from the nest box of an ASY female and quantified the ASY female's response in relation to her own plumage coloration. We found substantial differences in plumage reflectance of SY and ASY females, but found that ASY females became greener with duller white coloration in the second year. This may be due to poor weather that made reproduction particularly costly in the first year of the study and suggests coloration is influenced by condition. We found no relationship between dorsal coloration and aggressiveness. Rather, brighter white females spent more time on their nest box and within 2 m of the intruder than females with dull breasts. Our findings suggest that brighter white ASY females may perceive a SY female as less of a threat or that there may be a trade‐off associated with aggression and parental care that is related to white brightness.  相似文献

Detecting sexual conflict and sexually antagonistic coevolution   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We begin by providing an operational definition of sexual conflict that applies to both inter- and intralocus conflict. Using this definition, we examine a series of simple coevolutionary models to elucidate fruitful approaches for detecting interlocus sexual conflict and resultant sexually antagonistic coevolution. We then use published empirical examples to illustrate the utility of these approaches. Three relevant attributes emerge. First, the dynamics of sexually antagonistic coevolution may obscure the conflict itself. Second, competing models of inter-sexual coevolution may yield similar population patterns near equilibria. Third, a variety of evolutionary forces underlying competing models may be acting simultaneously near equilibria. One main conclusion is that studies of emergent patterns in extant populations (e.g. studies of population and/or female fitness) are unlikely to allow us to distinguish among competing coevolutionary models. Instead, we need more research aimed at identifying the forces of selection acting on shared traits and sexually antagonistic traits. More specifically, we need a greater number of functional studies of female traits as well as studies of the consequences of both male and female traits for female fitness. A mix of selection and manipulative studies on these is likely the most promising route.  相似文献

Butterflies are regularly used as model systems for understanding the role of coloration in communication because of their highly variable and conspicuous phenotypes. Most research showing a role for color in communication has focused on aspects of brightness or hue of entire wings or large color patches. However, evidence is accumulating that butterflies sometimes use smaller wing pattern elements in communication. Here we provide evidence that both male and female cabbage white butterflies (Pieris rapae L.) discriminate among conspecifics on the basis of the number of small but conspicuous black wing spots of the dorsal forewing. Male butterflies were more interactive with model butterflies with two spots, which resemble female butterflies, than with model butterflies with only one spot, which resemble male butterflies. Female butterflies showed the opposite response, being more interactive with male-like (one-spot) models than with female-like (two-spot) models. Some of our experiments were conducted with an electronic device designed to create a realistic and controlled fluttering behavior of the models. We describe the design and function of this device and provide evidence that it increased butterfly responses compared to a non-fluttering model. This device could prove useful for others addressing questions of communication in butterflies or other flying insects.  相似文献

Previous work in primates has shown that body size often covaries with ecological parameters related to resource or energy availability in the environment. This relationship may differ for males and females as access to resources has greater importance for reproductive success in females. We test the hypotheses that (1) female body mass may be more tightly constrained than male body mass by ecological variables, and (2) female body mass may respond more strongly than male body mass to changes in ecological variables (i.e., population‐specific female mass may vary more across an ecological gradient than male mass). Specifically, we investigate the relationship between climatic variables and sex‐specific body mass in Propithecus, a genus in which species‐specific body mass has already been demonstrated to covary significantly with climatic variables. Data from 733 wild sifakas are used to identify sex‐specific body mass for 27 populations representing all nine described sifaka species, and climatic data for each population are derived from the WorldClim database. We use phylogenetic generalized least squares models to demonstrate that body mass in both sexes is significantly correlated with annual rainfall and number of dry months. Furthermore, coefficients of determination are always higher for female models, and coefficients for each climatic variable are higher for females in all significant models. These results support the two hypotheses tested, indicating that ecological forces can have a greater impact on female mass than on male mass in primates. Previous studies have shown that male faces with extreme features associated with testosterone are perceived as dominant and masculine. Women have been reported to prefer more masculinized male faces as they may consider testosterone markers to be an 'honest' indication of good health, and such considerations may underlie their aesthetic preferences. However, pronounced testosterone facial markers are also associated with dominance, and several negative personality traits. This suggests that female aesthetic preferences may be an adaptive compromise between positive attributes associated with higher than average testosterone, and negative attributes associated with more extreme masculinization. This current study attempts to clarify the role of hormone markers in female perceptions of dominance, masculinity and attractiveness, in male facial images. Recent evidence suggests that the relative length of the 2nd to 4th finger (2D : 4D ratio) is a pointer to prenatal testosterone levels and may thus serve as a window to the prenatal hormonal environment. We measured 2D : 4D in a sample of male college students and took salivary samples to analyse circulating levels of testosterone. Women rated facial images of these males for dominance, masculinity and attractiveness. Our results show that male 2D : 4D was significantly negatively related to perceived dominance and masculinity but not attractiveness. Circulating testosterone levels were not related to dominance, masculinity or attractiveness. These findings suggest that: (i) high prenatal levels of testosterone serve to 'organize' male facial features to subsequently reflect dominance and masculine characteristics presumably activated during puberty; and (ii) attractiveness is not directly related to testosterone levels. We conclude that facial dominance and masculinity reflect a male's perceived status rather than his physical attraction to women.  相似文献

Anthropogenic features increasingly affect ecological processes with increasing human demand for natural resources. Such effects also have the potential to vary depending on the sex and age of an individual because of inherent behavioral and life experience differences. For the lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus), studies on male survival are limited because most previous research has been focused on females. To better understand patterns of lesser prairie-chicken survival in habitat with varying levels of anthropogenic infrastructure associated with oil and natural gas development, we monitored survival of 178 radio-tagged male and female lesser prairie-chickens in eastern New Mexico, USA, from 2013 to 2015. We examined the relationships of shrub cover, proximity to and density of anthropogenic features (i.e., utility poles), displacement of natural vegetation by anthropogenic features (i.e., area of roads and well pads), and individual demographics (i.e., sex, age) with lesser prairie-chicken survival. Furthermore, we categorized the probable cause of mortality and examined its relationship with oil and gas development intensity (indexed by utility pole density) within 1,425 m of an individual's mortality site or final observed location. We predicted that survival would be lower for individuals exposed to greater levels of anthropogenic features, and that males and subadults would be more negatively affected than females and adults because of increased exposure to predators during the lekking season and naiveté. Relationships between survival and utility pole density, sex, and age were supported in our top-ranked models, whereas models including other anthropogenic and natural features (i.e., roads, well pads, shrub cover) received little support. We predicted a substantial decrease in adult and subadult male survival with increasing densities of utility poles. The relationship between survival and utility pole density for females was weaker and not as clearly supported as for males. We did not find a detectable difference in utility pole counts among probable mortality causes. Our findings highlight the importance of including male lesser prairie-chickens in research and conservation planning, and the negative effect that high densities of anthropogenic features can have on lesser prairie-chicken survival. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The spatial ecology of the white‐tailed mongoose Ichneumia albicauda was studied during November 1998 to February 2000 on farmland adjacent to the Bale Mountains National Park in southern Ethiopia. Four male and one female white‐tailed mongooses were captured and radiotagged. The average range size was 3.2 km2 for three adult males and 2.6 km2 for the female which is larger than previously recorded in savannah habitat. Asymptotic range size was reached at approximately 50 locations for the males and twenty locations for the female. The ranges of the three adult male mongooses overlapped on average only 2% whereas the single female range overlapped with two adjacent males by 81 and 25%, respectively. Twenty per cent of mongoose sightings were of groups that consisted of a male and female. Diurnal resting sites were found amongst rocks or in empty buildings. The mongooses foraged on grassy areas within woodland and bush during nocturnal activity periods. We conclude that white‐tailed mongoose social organization in this agricultural landscape was similar to other solitary mongooses and was characterized by a mosaic of exclusive male ranges overlapping a separate mosaic of smaller female ranges.

Coenagrion puella males search actively for mates and are not aggressive to other males. To study the role of visual cues in male–female discrimination, four types of models were used: (1) bodies of intact insects, (2) models of painted males, (3) models of male–female chimerae, and (4) models of female body parts. Abdomen coloration pattern and presence of wings were the most important cues for sexual recognition by males. Step-by-step elimination of male coloration pattern leads to an increase in the tandem response rate. A female model painted as a male repelled males like the intact male model. The absence of either the head or the thorax slightly decreased the number of tandem responses, but models without both the head and the thorax were not recognized as a mate. Abdomen thickness larger than that of a normal female decreased the attractiveness of the model. Models of the gynochrome female were significantly more attractive than models of the androchrome one. Female models containing male parts were less attractive than models without any structure at this place. Using principal-components analysis, it is shown that models repelling males usually were those containing an intact male abdomen or a female abdomen painted with blue. The results indicate that C. puella males can distinguish males from females visually by morphological structures and coloration pattern.  相似文献

Female brood parasites are recognized as threats to reproductive success by many host species. Male brood parasites may accompany females while they search for nests to parasitize and males depredate nests throughout the nesting cycle. Hence, selection may also favour recognition of males. We examined whether two common host species perceive male brown-headed cowbirds ( Molothrus ater ) as brood parasites, as nest predators, or neither. We quantified visits of male cowbirds to nests of yellow warblers ( Dendroica petechia ) and red-winged blackbirds ( Ageliaus phoeniceus ) to assess the frequency with which these host species interact with male cowbirds. Males were observed near nests during hosts' laying and incubating stages, although less frequently than female cowbirds. No visits by cowbirds occurred while parents cared for nestlings. We then presented models of male and female cowbirds plus a non-threatening control to yellow warblers and red-winged blackbirds during laying and nestling periods. If hosts perceive males and females similarly, they should respond more intensely to the cowbird models during the laying period, when nests are most likely to be parasitized. Both species responded similarly to male and female cowbird models during laying, which suggests that hosts view cowbirds of both sexes as threats. The responses of yellow warblers with nestlings to male cowbirds were strongly influenced by the order of model presentation. Warblers first presented with the male cowbird gave much reduced anti-parasite responses than those that first interacted with the female then the male cowbird. These results suggest that yellow warblers recognized male vs. female cowbirds, but that discrimination was not expressed during laying. By contrast, red-winged blackbirds did not discriminate between male and female cowbirds at either nesting stage.  相似文献

The parasitoid wasp genus Achrysocharoides (Eulophidae) is unusual in that many of its species lay male and female eggs in single-sex clutches. The average clutch size of female broods is always greater than that of male broods, and in some species male clutch size is always one. We constructed models that predicted that severely egg-limited wasps should produce equal numbers of male and female eggs while severely host-limited wasps should produce equal numbers of male and female broods (and hence an overall female-biased sex ratio). Theory is developed to predict clutch size and sex ratio across the complete spectrum of host and egg limitation. A comparison of 19 surveys of clutch composition in seven species of Achrysocharoides showed a general pattern of equal numbers of male and female broods with a female-biased sex ratio (suggesting host limitation) although with considerable heterogeneity amongst collections and with a number of cases of unexpectedly low frequencies of male broods. Using a previous estimate of the relationship between fitness and size in the field, we predicted the maximally productive (Lack) clutch size for female broods of Achrysocharoides zwoelferi to be three. Of clutches observed in nature, 95% were equal to or smaller in size than the predicted Lack clutch size. When we manipulated local host density in the field, and as predicted by our models, clutch size and the proportion of female broods of A. zwoelferi decreased as hosts became more common, but the absolute frequency of male clutches was lower than expected. Nocturnal species may communicate by visual signals more frequentlythan previously thought. In fact, such species are habituallyactive around sunset and sunrise, when light conditions arestill suitable for visual communication. We investigated thecommunication function of a visual cue in the eagle owl Bubobubo, a nocturnal predator. In this species, territorial andcourtship displays peak during the sunset and sunrise periodsand involve the display of a white badge located on the throatwhose reflectance properties are sex and period dependent. Experimentalintrusions were conducted at 30 eagle owl territories in orderto understand the function of the white badge during contests. We analyzed the reactions of both male and female owners towarda taxidermic mount with a normal brightness and a brightness-reducedwhite badge, with both male and female territorial calls. Ourresults indicate that the white badge of eagle owls plays animportant role in visual communication during contests. Malesdisplayed more frequently toward male low-brightness mounts, which were also approached more closely or attacked. Femalebehavior did not differ between experimental groups. Furthermore,a positive relationship between male badge brightness and breedingoutput suggested a potential role of the white badge as an honestsignal of male quality. The need to convey information by visualcommunication in a nocturnal species may have promoted the evolutionof visual signals employed at crepuscule.  相似文献

Abstract .Two designs of cross-shaped sticky panels (XT and XLP) were compared with the royal blue–white legpanel (LPBuWh) in the Jozani forest on Unguja Island as trapping devices for male Glossina austeni . Single coloured royal blue (XTBu) and bi-coloured royal blue–white XT (XTBuWh) caught more than twice as many male G. austeni as the LPBuWh, whereas single coloured black XT trapped significantly fewer flies (10%) than the control LPBuWh. XT's in various horizontal and diagonal blue–white configurations likewise trapped more flies than the LPBuWh, except a horizontally striped blue–white XT which trapped fivefold fewer flies than the LPBuWh. Cross-shaped LP in the blue–white (XLPBuWh) and black–white (XLPBlWh) combination scored significantly better than the control LPBuWh. Similar fly numbers were trapped with XTBuWh and XLPBuWh. Long-term trapping data indicated that the XTBu, XTBuWh and XLPBuWh were three- to fourfold more effective in trapping female flies than the LPBuWh.
The landing bias on bi-coloured panels was low in the blue–white but more pronounced in the blue–black and white–black combinations and was affected by the type of sticky panel used. A high proportion (49%) of the flies alighted on the bottom corners of the XTBu panel, but landing positions were more scattered if white was added.
Increasing the width of the XTBu from 70 to 120 cm improved the catch by a factor of two as compared with standard sized XTBu. The effect of doubling the height of the XT on total fly catch was negligible.
At present, it is the XTBu which can be recommended as the best trapping device for male and female G. austeni.  相似文献

Males of many animal species express ornaments that affect their reproduction opportunities through male–male competition or female mate choice. Such ornaments can, for example, inform conspecifics about the fighting ability, condition or territory ownership of the bearer. Pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) males have a conspicuous white forehead patch that varies greatly in size. We examined whether the white forehead patch is an intrasexually selected trait in a Finnish population. We artificially manipulated forehead patch size to represent two naturally occurring extremes and competed males against each other in the presence of a female. Males with a large forehead patch were more aggressive than males with a small patch, whereas the original patch size of the male had no influence on aggression. Neither manipulated nor original patch size influenced resource dominance (over female or nest box). These results indicate that forehead patch signals fighting ability of the bearer in the pied flycatcher. The next step is to find out what kind of costs may maintain the honesty of this signal.  相似文献
