Background

Biometric methods are security technologies, which use human characteristics for personal identification. Iris recognition systems use iris textures as unique identifiers. This paper presents an analysis of the verification of iris identities after intra-ocular procedures, when individuals were enrolled before the surgery.

Methods

Fifty-five eyes from fifty-five patients had their irises enrolled before a cataract surgery was performed. They had their irises verified three times before and three times after the procedure, and the Hamming (mathematical) distance of each identification trial was determined, in a controlled ideal biometric environment. The mathematical difference between the iris code before and after the surgery was also compared to a subjective evaluation of the iris anatomy alteration by an experienced surgeon.

Results

A correlation between visible subjective iris texture alteration and mathematical difference was verified. We found only six cases in which the eye was no more recognizable, but these eyes were later reenrolled. The main anatomical changes that were found in the new impostor eyes are described.

Conclusions

Cataract surgeries change iris textures in such a way that iris recognition systems, which perform mathematical comparisons of textural biometric features, are able to detect these changes and sometimes even discard a pre-enrolled iris considering it an impostor. In our study, re-enrollment proved to be a feasible procedure.

Forging ahead     
A large percentage of the world’s population have seen science fiction movies depicting biometric systems that can be circumvented by criminals using sophisticated devices. Such misleading information may prove to be a box office winner, but it can lead to a high amount of confusion about how a biometric device assesses whether a person is who he or she claims to be. While the marketing departments of many biometrics companies address the PR issues associated with inaccurate information, the technical divisions are also working hard to eliminate problems associated with ‘live and well’ checks. However, to my knowledge, in spite of the steps taken by many fingerprint companies, no fingerprint system — currently on the market — is 100% foolproof.  相似文献

Governing by identity describes the emerging regime of a globalizing, mobile world. Governance depends on identification but identification increasingly depends on biometrics. This 'solution' to difficulties of verification is described and some technical weaknesses are discussed. The role of biometrics in classification systems is also considered and is shown to contain possible prejudice in relation to racialized criteria of identity. Lastly, the culture of biometric identification is shown to be limited to abstract data, artificially separated from the lived experience of the body including the orientation to others. It is proposed that creators of national ID systems in particular address these crucial deficiencies in their attempt to provide new modes of verification.  相似文献

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in finding stronger means of securitising identity against the various risks presented by the mobile globalised world. Biometric technology has featured quite prominently on the policy and security agenda of many countries. It is being promoted as the solution du jour for protecting and managing the uniqueness of identity in order to combat identity theft and fraud, crime and terrorism, illegal work and employment, and to efficiently govern various domains and services including asylum, immigration and social welfare. In this paper, I shall interrogate the ways in which biometrics is about the uniqueness of identity and what kind of identity biometrics is concerned with. I argue that in posing such questions at the outset, we can start delimiting the distinctive bioethical stakes of biometrics beyond the all-too-familiar concerns of privacy, data protection and the like. I take cue mostly from Cavarero’s Arendt-inspired distinction between the “what” and the “who” elements of a person, and from Ricoeur’s distinction between the “idem” and “ipse” versions of identity. By engaging with these philosophical distinctions and concepts, and with particular reference to the example of asylum policy, I seek to examine and emphasise an important ethical issue pertaining to the practice of biometric identification. This issue relates mainly to the paradigmatic shift from the biographical story (which for so long has been the means by which an asylum application is assessed) to bio-digital samples (that are now the basis for managing and controlling the identities of asylum applicants). The purging of identity from its narrative dimension lies at the core of biometric technology’s overzealous aspiration to accuracy, precision and objectivity, and raises one of the most pressing bioethical questions vis-à-vis the realm of identification.  相似文献

But, to date, the number of sales is disappointing, and in some cases is falling. There are an estimated 285 million people with visual impairment worldwide, of whom 39 million are blind. The pathogenesis of many eye diseases remains poorly understood. The human eye is currently an emerging proteome that may provide key insight into the biological pathways of disease. We review proteomic investigations of the human eye and present a catalogue of 4842 nonredundant proteins identified in human eye tissues and biofluids to date. We highlight the need to identify new biomarkers for eye diseases using proteomics. Recent advances in proteomics do now allow the identification of hundreds to thousands of proteins in tissues and fluids, characterization of various PTMs and simultaneous quantification of multiple proteins. To facilitate proteomic studies of the eye, the Human Eye Proteome Project (HEPP) was organized in September 2012. The HEPP is one of the most recent components of the Biology/Disease‐driven Human Proteome Project (B/D‐HPP) whose overarching goal is to support the broad application of state‐of‐the‐art measurements of proteins and proteomes by life scientists studying the molecular mechanisms of biological processes and human disease. The large repertoire of investigative proteomic tools has great potential to transform vision science and enhance understanding of physiology and disease processes that affect sight.  相似文献

Fingerprint, as one of the most popular and robust biometric traits, can be used in automatic identification and verification systems to identify individuals. Fingerprint matching is a vital and challenging issue in fingerprint recognition systems. Most fingerprint matching algorithms are minutiae-based. The minutiae points are the ways that the fingerprint ridges can be discontinuous. Ridge ending and ridge bifurcation are two frequently used minutiae in most fingerprint matching algorithms. This article presents a new minutiae-based fingerprint matching using the onion peeling approach. In the proposed method, fingerprints are aligned to find the matched minutiae points. Then, the nested convex polygons of matched minutiae points are constructed and the comparison between peer-to-peer polygons is performed by the turning function distance. Simplicity, accuracy, and low time complexity of the onion peeling approach are three important factors that make it a standard method for fingerprint matching purposes. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on the database FVC2002. Since the fingerprints that the difference between the number of their layers is more than 2 and the a minutiae matching score lower than 0.15 are ignored, better results are obtained.KeywordsFingerprint Matching, Minutiae, Convex Layers, Turning Function, Computational Geometry.  相似文献

Currently, most biometric methods mainly use single features, making them easily forged and cracked. In this study, a novel triple-layers biometric recognition method, based on photoacoustic microscopy, is proposed to improve the security of biometric identity recognition. Using the photoacoustic (PA) dermoscope, three-dimensional absorption-structure information of the fingers was obtained. Then, by combining U-Net, Gabor filtering, wavelet analysis and morphological transform, a lightweight algorithm called photoacoustic depth feature recognition algorithm (PADFR) was developed to automatically realize stratification (the fingerprint, blood vessel fingerprint and venous vascular), extracting feature points and identity recognition. The experimental results show that PADFR can automatically recognize the PA hierarchical features with an average accuracy equal to 92.99%. The proposed method is expected to be widely used in biometric identification system due to its high security.  相似文献

The cornea is a transparent, avascular, and highly specialized connective tissue that provides the majority of light refraction in the optical system of the eye. The human cornea is composed of several layers interacting in a complex manner and possessing specific functions, like eye protection and optical clearness. Only few proteomic studies of mammalian cornea have been performed leading to the identification of less than 200 proteins in human corneas. The present study explores the proteome of the intact normal human cornea using a shot-gun nanoLC-MS/MS strategy and an LTQ Orbitrap mass spectrometer. A total of 2070 distinct corneal proteins were identified from five human cornea samples, which represents a 14-fold improvement in the number of proteins identified so far for human cornea. This enlarged dataset of human corneal proteins represents a valuable reference library for further studies on cornea homeostasis and pathophysiology. Network and gene ontology analyses were used to determine biological pathways specific of the human cornea. They allowed the identification of subnetworks of putative importance for corneal diseases, like a redox regulation and oxidative stress network constituted of aldehyde and alcohol dehydrogenases, most of them being described for the first time in human cornea.  相似文献

Since the days of Hans Spemann, the ocular lens has served as one of the most important developmental systems for elucidating the fundamental processes of induction and differentiation. Lens is an important source of signals that influence the eye development and a variety of genes expressed by the lens have been identified. The identification of additional molecule(s), especially secreted ones that might mediate signals, will extend our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of eye and lens development. The eyes are complex sensory organs and are designed to optimize vision under conditions of varying light. There are a number of eye disorders that can influence vision. Eye disorders among the elderly are a major health problem. With advancing age, the normal function of eye tissues decreases and there is an increased incidence of ocular pathology. The most common symptoms elicited from ocular diseases are few in number and non-specific in nature: blurred vision, pain, and redness. Cataracts occur most frequently in older people and have significant impact on an individual's quality of life. There are effective therapies and visual aids for these potential vision-limiting conditions. Corneal haze a complication of refractive surgery is characterized by the cloudiness of the normally clear cornea. Iridocyclitis is the inflammation of the Iris and ciliary body. In corneal arcus are white circles in the cornea of the eye caused by fatty deposits. So, there is a need to diagnose to the normal eye from the abnormal one. This paper presents an identification of normal eye image and abnormal (consists of five kinds of eye images) classes using radial basis function (RBF) classifier. The features are extracted from the raw images using the image processing techniques and fuzzy K-means algorithm. Our system uses 150 subjects, consisting of five different kinds of eye disease conditions. We demonstrated a sensitivity of 90%, for the classifier with the specificity of 100%. Our systems are ready clinically to run on large amount of data sets.  相似文献

Molecular sexing of birds has been possible for over a decade, but for practical reasons many studies still use biometric data for sex discrimination. In some species, the sexes are easy to distinguish but sexual dimorphism is often more subtle, requiring the use of statistical analyses of biometric measurements to discriminate sexes. These models are usually parameterized and validated using data from a limited number of sites and years. However, the resulting discriminant functions are often applied to other populations and periods. A crucial, but usually untested, assumption is that sexual dimorphism does not vary in time and space. Here we illustrate the consequences of violation of this assumption in Eurasian Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus , a species for which most studies have relied on biometric sexing. Using biometric data from captures of known-sex birds, we show that sexual dimorphism varied substantially in time and even reversed in some months and years. Furthermore, some biometric traits used in sexing changed gradually over time, causing a reduction in sexual dimorphism. We show that the consequences of this variation on sex discrimination in Oystercatchers are subtle and easily overlooked, but can result in inaccurate and strongly male- or female-biased sex-ratio estimates. We recommend that biometric sexing should be avoided in Oystercatchers unless specific calibration for each month, year and area is carried out. This recommendation also applies to other species where biometric traits may depend on environmental conditions. We argue that this condition might apply to many bird species and therefore advise caution when interpreting results based on biometric sex discrimination.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory, augmented by a vast literature on gaze cuing and gaze following, suggests that the unique high-contrast morphology of the human eye evolved for rapid and silent communication between conspecifics. While this theory rests on the fundamental idea that humans use their eyes to signal information, empirical studies have focused exclusively on the effects of gaze cues on human receivers. In a series of three experiments we examined the other side of the communication dynamic by investigating if, and when, humans signal gaze information to other humans in a natural, but controlled, situation involving food consumption. First, we established that there is a normative behavior to look away when someone begins to bite. Second, we found that participants were significantly more likely to look down at their food before taking a bite when they were eating with another person versus alone. Lastly, we found that in pairs where a social connection has been established, when one person looks down signaling that a bite is forthcoming, the other person tends to look away. These results demonstrate that natural gaze signaling occurs in the context of eating, and it can, dependent on the relationship between the pair, trigger a gaze response that is different from gaze following. Our study shows that natural social attention between individuals is a two-way street, where each person can signal and read gaze information, consistent with the idea that human eye morphology evolved to facilitate communication between conspecifics.  相似文献

The lens of the vertebrate eye was the classic model used to demonstrate the concepts of inductive interactions controlling development. However, it is in the Drosophila model that the greatest progress in understanding molecular mechanisms of eye development have most recently been made. This progress can be attributed to the power of molecular genetics, an approach that was once confined to simpler systems like worms and flies, but is now becoming possible in vertebrates. Thus, the use of transgenic and knock-out gene technology, coupled with the availability of new positional cloning methods, has recently initiated a surge of progress in the mouse genetic model and has also led to the identification of genes involved in human inherited disorders. In addition, gene transfer techniques have opened up opportunities for progress using chick, Xenopus, and other classic developmental systems. Finally, a new vertebrate genetic model, zebrafish, appears very promising for molecular studies. As a result of the opportunities presented by these new approaches, eye development has come into the limelight, hence the timeliness of this focus issue of Developmental Genetics. In this introductory review, we discuss three areas of current work arising through the use of these newer genetic approaches, and pertinent to research articles presented herein. Knowledge of the morphological phenotypes of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda: Digenea) is analysed. The influence of parasite age on its dimensions, the adult fluke growth model, variation in a biometric variable versus time, and variation in a biometric variable versus another biometric variable (allometric model) are revised. The most useful allometric model appears to be (y2 m-y2)/y2=c [(y1 m-y1)/y1](b), where y1=body area or body length, y2=one of the measurements analysed, y1 m, y2 m=maximum values towards which y1 and y2, respectively, tend, and c, b=constants. A method based on material standardization, the measurement proposal and allometric analysis is detailed. A computer image analysis system (CIAS), which includes a colour video-camera connected to a stereomicroscope (for adult studies) and a microscope (for egg studies), facilitates the processing of digital imaging. Examples of its application for the analysis of the influence of different factors on the liver fluke phenotype are shown using material from the Northern Bolivian Altiplano, where human and domestic animal fascioliasis is caused by F. hepatica only. Comparisons between the development of livestock fluke populations from highlands and lowlands are discussed and the relationships between host species and liver fluke morphometric patterns is analysed.  相似文献

Photographs are often used to establish the identity of an individual or to verify that they are who they claim to be. Yet, recent research shows that it is surprisingly difficult to match a photo to a face. Neither humans nor machines can perform this task reliably. Although human perceivers are good at matching familiar faces, performance with unfamiliar faces is strikingly poor. The situation is no better for automatic face recognition systems. In practical settings, automatic systems have been consistently disappointing. In this review, we suggest that failure to distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar face processing has led to unrealistic expectations about face identification in applied settings. We also argue that a photograph is not necessarily a reliable indicator of facial appearance, and develop our proposal that summary statistics can provide more stable face representations. In particular, we show that image averaging stabilizes facial appearance by diluting aspects of the image that vary between snapshots of the same person. We review evidence that the resulting images can outperform photographs in both behavioural experiments and computer simulations, and outline promising directions for future research.  相似文献
